You are Urist Twelfthbay, and you are a short, sturdy creature fond of drink and industry. As the moe personification of Dwarf Fortress, you're pretty damn confident in your architectural skills.

Sure, you've got glitches coming out the wazoo, and your approach to physics is best described in terms of body counts and one of those "X Days Since Our Last Gruesome Accident" signs, but you think you've managed to work around that shit. Hell, you could even say that you've made those glitches your own, incorporating them into your building style.

That being said, there are things even you'd be hesitant to build. It's not a LONG list by any stretch of the imagination- mermaid capturing/breeding/harvesting chambers are right up on the top- but it /does/ include the vast majority of buildings emblematic of Gamindustri's twisted universe. By that, you mean stuff that exists just to capture the extremely Japanese essence of cute girls doing titillating things, occasionally to each other, as if your universe was designed by lonely dumbasses with nothing better to do.

Stuff like a goddamned hot springs resort, smack-dab in the middle of your wide-open monster-spawning first cavern-layer.

"Aww, c'mon, Urist!" Neptune whines. "You can't pass up this opportunity! Just look at this place! It's like it was made expressly for this purpose!" The goddess of Planeptune, soaking wet from head to toe, points at your underground lake. It's all but rubbing shoulders with a magma pool, heating the water to a comfortable boil.

You grind your teeth before growling right back at her, crossing your arms over your chest. Seriously, no means no. You've got, like, a trillion goddamn things to worry about, all of which take precedence over building a tourist attraction.

"Eeeeeh? No way! We're at a lull in the plot, aren't we?" Neptune huffs, and straightens up with DETERMINATION. "Fine! If you won't listen to me, then I'll go talk to Blanc! I'm sure she'll come down to convince you, 'cause nobody can stand up to the one-two punch of Nintendo AND Sega!"

And just like that, Neptune's running back toward the fort.

"A-Ah, oneechan, wait-"

Before you can stop her, Nepgear throws you an apologetic look before immediately dashing off after her older sister, maybe hoping to calm Neptune down or talk some sense into her.

Godspeed, girl. Less than a day old, and she's already being worked to the bone.

You're about to get back to work planning your well when something occurs to you. Turning on Therapist, you work past the hyperdimensional void's ever-present interference, scanning the list of names for one in particular. Thravar and Tiff are outside, Mojang's over by the stockpiles, Blanc is meandering through the fortress proper, Shovel Knight's still sleeping, and...

Your eyebrow twitches. Good news is, you found Doomgirl. Bad news is, she's absolutely fucking insane. With a curse, you ring her up immediately, sending her a telepathic message.

>What the hell are you doing in the /sealed/ second cavern layer!?

"I smell demons," Doomgirl growls right back. No preambles, no excuses, no nothing; in your mind's eye, you can /see/ her twitching in paranoid wariness, whatever firearm she's got primed and at the ready. "They're right under us. How can you not feel 'em, just waiting to be harvested?"

>That doesn't answer your question, dammit!

"I'm taking the fight to them! That's the only way to win! Hold on a sec." Strangely enough, as you hear her murder some sort of underground cave monster, she... sounds the happiest you've ever heard her, like all this suicidal danger's taking a weight off her shoulders. "Don't worry about me. I've got this covered. Who's the man? I'm the man! Shut up, no one asked you-"

You leave Doomgirl to her insane mutterings. Well, that answers THAT question. You don't know how she got down there, but at least you know for sure now: for better or worse, you've got one or more adamantine veins underneath your fort.

With one of your allies hellbent on digging up all the Hidden Fun Stuff that lies underneath the adamantine, you're leaning toward "worse."

Am I the only one who does not want to have a bathing episode? We have lava and water. the former we make into a lava forge, the later we make either into a proper Water source and/or a steam provider, which we could either use to transport the water higher (Via condensation) and/or power some machines with it.

Too many uses to waste it on bathing.

Not actually bathing, but building the facilities. And they're nothing to say we couldn't engineer a lava forge behind a bath wall, with steam from the baths being collected to power machines.

Just, you know, subverting the trope to focus on crafting the rooms then having the bathing be glossed over and ignored, as is the Dwarven way.
>>
>>46362743
I dunno, I'm pretty sure we're currently in Fortress Mode, not Adventure mode, with our group serving as our dwarves. Unless forcing the world to recognize them as our dwarves would require a special ability, like that time Estelle forced everyone into a turn based battle...

>[X] [LEAVE HER]

Nnghk. You pinch the bridge of your nose and try to think, pushing down your frustration and your ever-present dread. From what you can tell, Doomgirl's a one-girl wrecking crew, and her entire schtick is murdering hell-born monstrosities with extreme prejudice. On top of that, she's accustomed to being stranded on her lonesome against overwhelming odds; your caverns only let in monsters in small groups, and even forgotten beasts only pop in roughly one at a time, so it should be no contest.

Calculations continue trickling into your mind, cold and practical. A permanent powerful guard in the lower caverns wouldn't be a bad thing. Leaving her down there will keep her occupied, and she sounds like she's having fun for now. You can come back and check on her later. She might not be particularly useful during your planned trip to Planeptune. And most importantly, as far as you know, Doomgirl won't actually be able to dig down to Hidden Fun Stuff...

Mind made up, you re-connect with Therapist. You know what? Sure. Fine. Doomgirl should keep doing whatever it is she's doing. Just watch out for void corrupted monsters and dust-breathing forgotten beasts, okay?

"I knew you'd come around to my way of thinking," Doomgirl replies, her mental "voice" thankfully free of smugness. You wince as there's another hellish screech, followed by something disturbingly meaty detonating into pieces. "The monsters keep coming! This place is like Christmas, except free of cynical consumerism! And Santa respawns whenever you rip off his face to check for fake beards!"

She's not paying you any more attention, so you quietly close the connection, shaking your head. Right, back to the task at hand: a well! Although you'll have to rush a bit, since Neptune's awake and ready to head off to Planeptune.

It doesn't take you very long to carve out a proper reservoir of water that's separate (and sealable) from the underground lake. Compared to diverting rivers, wrangling with water pressure, or messing with fucking aquifers, this comes easily enough to you, especially since you're not trying to do anything fancy. You end up spending the most time on digging the actual well shaft and cludging together a floodgate.

And now that you're finished, your fortress won't fucking die the moment it comes under siege.

Rock dust covers you from head to toe, and as you parch your thirst using only the finest homemade booze, your mind treacherously slides back to the thought of baths. You spare another look at the water-and-lava lakes, scowling a little childishly.

There's no doubt about it; sure, you're out in the void between dimensions, but you'd spawned this fortress INSIDE Gamindustri, and this "coincidental" hot springs-friendly setup has all the hallmarks of your home dimension's bullshit. If you didn't know any better, you'd think your dimension was sentient.

(Cont.)
>>
>>46363557
For a moment, you're sorely tempted to build a hot springs resort (because it is Gamindustri, and a hot springs episode may be inevitable), but do it in such a way that'll traumatize Neptune.

That idea goes back in the trash just as quickly, because in order to secure the place against monsters and forgotten beasts, you'd need to build walls AND a ceiling, not to mention a way to seal the place in emergencies.

You just don't have the time or materials for such an undertaking. Besides, when you've got magma this close to the surface, it'd be a waste to only use it to heat a bunch of water.

... hmm. You'll have to chew on these ideas later. You shake out your hair, absentmindedly combing your fingers over the thick braids as you ponder your next step.

Hah. You've missed being able to take it comparatively easy like this, without anything world-ending threatening to happen.

Once we get to Planeptune, we need to find a treasure box and grab that dodad that lets us summon dwarves.

Or, alternatively, we should summon some dwarves now and designate out the basics of a full working fortress, then let them dig it out while we're gone.
>>
>>46363896
No that's just asking for FUN!!
>>
>>46363896
You know very well that doing so would just lead to a forgotten beast or three moving into the place once we are out.
>>
>>46363944
Dwarves are surprisingly capable when you give them complete control of a fortress. Heck, Legends mode describes a fortress being retired as "[Group] regained their senses after a period of questionable judgement."
>>
>>46364001
This isn't legends though it's leaving dwarf fortress on for an hour while you go to the movies
>>
>>46364053
Nah, I would rather say it is stored in a legends mode like pattern. Also, we do not take all Personifications. Just the more stable occupants (Minus blanc) and Neptune.

>[X] [MORE RENOVATIONS]

Y'know, up until now, you've never had your own proper fortress.

As you trudge back up the stairs leading away from the caverns, you can't help but focus on that thought. For years and years, you've been thirsty as fuck for the wonderfully cathartic feeling of building entire dwarven communities from the ground up. You've never transformed a seven-dwarf stockpile cave to a fully-functioning and well-oiled fortress, or at least one that's semi-functioning and oiled-with-the-blood-of-countless-unlucky-residents.

You've lived in holes in the ground, you've built your own houses, and you've built pillow fortresses, but none of that can even come close to the real thing. And now that you've had your first few tastes...

Looking down, you realize your hands are trembling a little. Goddamn. You know you should head to Planeptune soon, or maybe ferret out Arfoire in the hyperdimensional void, but...

There's so damn much to do, and that single thought thrills you like never before.

You want to build more. You /need/ to build more. Just a little bit will be fine, right?

[ ] [DINING HALL] Because a fortress just isn't a fortress if you don't have a proper meeting area for your residents to congregate in. There's a lot of digigng involved, so you'll have to get Mojang to help you out.
[ ] [FURNITURE/CHATTING] A little urban planning is fine too! Bedrooms need furniture, and you haven't done this yet. Since you'll be at the workshops, you'll be able to talk to the goddesses- Neptune, Blanc, and Nepgear.
[ ] [EXTERIOR/FORTIFICATIONS] Right now, the greatest danger to your fort comes from the void. Go build up your defenses, look into creating a windmill-based propulsion system, and see how Tiff and Thravar are faring.

Hmm. Of the playable races and their equivalents in DF:

- Humans, dwarves, and even elves aren't hostile.
- Goblins, trolls, minotaurs, and werewolves (werebeasts) are.
- Animal men aren't strictly hostile; I've had a hamster man poet visit my fortress's tavern, which sounded absolutely goddamned adorable.
- Gnomes and draenei don't exist.

So it's a weird conglomeration of conflicting stuff that's guaranteed to keep Urist on edge.

>[X] [ON SECOND THOUGHT, PLANEPTUNE]

You feel yourself vibrating with a nervous energy. Finally, the day has come for you to indulge in your Armok-given duty. You're gonna build like you've never built before! You're gonna fucking designate rooms and mine those rooms out and build up your fortifications! You're gonna decorate everyone's bedrooms like the fist of an angry dwarven god, and you're gonna-

"Ah! Oneechan!"

.... you're gonna look upon the smiling, naively trusting face of Nepgear, and your compulsive-obsessive need to build will evaporate like so much 1/7 depth water.

Honestly, the scene in the stockpile room is as relaxing as it is surreal. Uncharacteristically silent, Neptune is lying stomach-first against the cavern floor, intently reading one of your animal-skin codices; sitting primly on a bin-less pile of cloth, Blanc is using her rival goddess as a footrest, already most of the way through another one of your books. For some reason, Neptune doesn't seem to mind.

Nepgear's got that mini-forge out again, except she's... got it over the Seganium-built motorcycle, doing Armok knows what with it.

You give your second surrogate little sister a nod before glancing over to one of the corners. Shovel Knight's still out cold, although someone's covered her prone, primarily armor-less form with a +pig tail cloth blanket+, and there's an empty bucket next to her head. Mojang's got her cubical crafting table out, and her furnace casts a reddish glow to her surroundings; she doesn't look up, as she's puzzling over some of the weirder Gamindustri-specific ores you've got lying around.

Right. It's time to go to Planeptune. More importantly, it's time to see who's gonna be coming with you on this trip.

Honestly, Neptune and Nepgear are a given. You've never been to Planeptune before, and suddenly appearing there WITHOUT the nation's patron saint (and with a never before seen CPU candidate) sounds like the quickest way to a jail cell.

(Cont.)
>>
>>46365713
As for the others...

Mojang absentmindedly brushes her hair from her forehead when you call her over. She closes her eyes, smiling softly. "... as expected of you, oneechan. You really have found a way out of the void, haven't you?"

"Somehow," Blanc mutters. "It's a long story. But if you're going to Planeptune-"

"Obligatory comment about how it's the greatest nation in the world!" Neptune calls from her spot on the ground, not looking up. "Also, your books are weird, Urist, but in a good way. I could read about these legends forever!"

"... if you're going to Planeptune," Blanc continues, ignoring Neptune with practiced ease. "You'll need to look up some books for me. There's some research I need to conduct, and the Basilicom there should have what I'm looking for in their archives."

"Oh! That reminds me." Neptune frowns and props herself up on her elbows, glancing back over her shoulders. "Blaaaanc, you owe me overdue library fines! And they're from our second war, so it's like three hundred Nepbucks!"

Blanc closes her book, narrowing her red eyes in thought. "... we were at /war/," she deadpans eventually. "You banned me from entering your nation, and you made no mention of any overdue fines when we ceased hostilities, or during the past few decades-"

"Um..."

Maybe it's her status as the youngest of the group, but you swear Nepgear's voice has a way of grabbing everyone's attention- or at least stopping these two particular CPUs from arguing.

(Cont.)
>>
>>46365736
"Do you think I should wear a cloak?" the Purple Sister asks, poking her fingers together nervously as she stammers on. "I mean, they don't know they have a goddess in training, and I was just thinking, they might not accept me-"

It's amazing how quickly Neptune vaults to her feet, and how little heed she pays to Blanc flipping over with an undignified squawk. "Awww, c'mon, you don't have anything to worry about!" she croons, wrapping her little sister in a hug. "You're perfectly 100% fine as you are, and oh my god you are so /precious/ my little Nep Jr.-"

You look between Neptune- airheaded, widely-grinning Neptune- and the much more reserved and protect-able Nepgear. Yeah, you have a feeling that Planeptune's populace will wholeheartedly embrace your surrogate little sister.

"It'll be fine," Mojang adds, gently extricating Nepgear from her sister's clutches. "I'm sure Planeptune will be proud of having two goddesses, after all!"

"I..." Nepgear looks down, smiling shyly. "I hope that's- I mean, I'd like that. I'd like that a lot..."

Blanc frowns and glances back to her book, sighing slightly. "Let me know when you've decided on a course of action," she mutters.

Right. About that...

>[X] [THREE'S A CROWD]

You flip one of your braids back over your shoulders. Really, from where you're standing, there's only one course of action you CAN take-

"I'll stay home and watch the fort!" Mojang interjects, raising her hand.

... huh. That's fine by you- she's the only one who HAS the power to watch the fort- but you thought she'd be more divided about passing up the chance to get an express ticket to Planeptune's Basilicom.

"No, it's fine." The redhead clasps her hands behind her back, beaming down at you. "This is your first proper fortress, right? I really want to see it grow, so I'll do my best to keep it safe until you return!"

... ugh, her smile- and the emotions behind it- are so damn bright that you feel like you need sunglasses or some shit like that.

"I mean," Mojang continues heedlessly. "It IS a great chance, and I've heard great things about Planeptune, but-"

"Don't worry!" Neptune cuts in, shooting her a thumbs-up. "Once this is all over, I'll invite you over! You haven't had a proper party until you've experienced a truly Neppy bash! We'll-"

"- eat pudding and play games all day," Blanc deadpans, turning another page.

"And we'll have no regrets about doing so!" the purple-haired goddess reasserts, planting her hands on her hips.

Nepgear looks back and forth between Blanc and Neptune. "What's pudding?" she asks timidly- only to have her shoulders gently taken by her big sister.

"Oh you poor sweet summer child," Neptune whispers brokenly, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "I have so much to teach you."

As Neptune cranks up the melodramatics, Blanc shoots you a /look/, along with the unspoken question: do you need her assistance?

(Cont.)
>>
>>46366627
... nnghk. As much as you'd love to have Blanc along to keep Neptune in line, she really needs to lay low. Under normal circumstances, bringing a rival CPU into Planeptune would turn a lot of fucking heads. And as glitched as she is now, her presence would cause more problems than it would solve.

You keep that unsaid, though, and shake your head instead. Don't worry, you'll get her those books. Anything's got to be more helpful than your fortress's dumb codices.

"Thank you. While I'm learning a lot from these books," Blanc replies, perhaps a touch dryly, "they don't quite have what I'm looking for. About the void, and about /her/."

... heh. Can't argue with that.

Once you corral Neptune and Nepgear, the three of you walk over to the little dead-end hallway you'd dug out in the storeroom's wall, with Mojang and Blanc following along to send you off. It's a good thing you put the Dutiful Chastity against such a visible alcove; the sharicite door seems to have a tendency to disappear when not in use, and you'd have a hell of a time finding it if you'd just leaned it against some random wall.

You pause before activating your artifact door, turning to CPU White Heart. While you're out, if any of the other adventurers want to go home...

Mojang blinks in confusion, but Blanc nods after a moment, catching your meaning. "No problem. I should be able to reveal the portal for them."

Right. Thanks.

With that out of the way, you're able to concentrate on pulling the door out of stasis and... activating it. Not that it takes very much effort; whatever mojo's running the portal, it doesn't seem to be keyed to your strange powers or Neptune's divinity, which is a relief. It's like some innate aspect of the sharicite is a-okay with being used as a transdimensional doorway.

(Cont.)
>>
>>46366638
Well, whatever. What matters is that the damn thing works, not HOW it works. A soothing pulse of energy expands outward from Temptbleaches, filling you with a sense of stability, before coalescing into the visible form of your stoneworked portal. It's as you last remembered it: tall enough to allow multiple humans through, the door is made of smooth, white-ish translucent stone, finely decorated with bone and leather that gives it an almost Stone Age feel. It's a masterwork in every sense of the phrase-

Mojang squeaks in scandalized horror. "O-Oneechan!"

- and your stomach drops out as you remember, far too late, the masterwork /engravings/ etched onto the sides of the stone, describing the typically Gamindustri-esque antics you'd fallen prey to in the Fighting Frog. Blanc's turned her face away, covering her mouth with her hand.

Fucking hell.

You act as fast as you can, plastering your back against the door and raising your arms to block out the images. COME ON, NO TIME TO TALK, WE'RE LEAVING NOW.

"Wow," Neptune whistles admiringly, ducking under your arm to more closely inspect the engravings. "I knew about Estelle, but I never figured Rokko to be the type who'd-"

WHOOPS, you bellow, and Neptune's musings truncate in a scream as you kick her through the portal. Nepgear quickly follows, helped along by a much kinder push to the small of her back.

"O-Oneechan, wait! What even happened here!?" Mojang stammers, her face in her hands. "Did they-"

TO BE CONTINUED NEVER, you roar before hurling yourself through the portal, choosing to plunge between dimensions and suffer the possibility of some catastrophic warp failure rather than look at Mojang's blushing wide-eyed face any longer.

God/dammit/.

As always, updates to schedule will go to https://twitter.com/BlorpQuest, and questions can go here or ask.fm/BlorpQuest.

Thanks for participating, guys, and should things go well, I'll catch you in about two weeks. Hope you all had a happy Easter weekend (or its equivalent), and see you next time!

>I have heard about someone using a giant three headed dog protecting their land. But I liked cats ... but not being able to play with them on demand is so boring, so I made those.
> cue the consols acting as cats. (Spoiled, Irritating and egomaniacal)

This in a nutshell!

This continuity's a little different; at the start of the quest, relations between nations have been more or less peaceful following the last major Console War, but still in the process of thawing. A goddess showing up in her rival's nation wouldn't be a problem, but it would definitely attract a fair amount of attention.

Neptune's the exception to this, because she appears airheaded enough to give no fucks, and has made a habit of visiting her rivals on a regular basis. Given time, she likely would've played a large role in accelerating the big thaw in relations, like a sort of attrition by cheerful Neppy annoyance.

Given that the last few days have seen Vert beating the shit out of Blanc on international television, and that there've been rumors of Arfoire dicking about in Gamindustri, let's just say tensions are running considerably higher than normal. And bringing Blanc to Planeptune, especially since she's glitched due to aforementioned Arfoire dickery and can't act as she normally would, would have raised some real big alarms throughout Planeptune if revealed!

Thanks guys, and g'night! My nerves should be okay. Probably.

Out of curiosity, how many of you guys are outside the US? Because I'm seeing a number of people coming in from different time zones and staying up to ridiculous hours. (Not going to lie, that's some definite incentive to either not cancel, or announce a cancellation like half a day in advance.)

Haha. Well, the dead-eyed look is probably accurate, if nothing else!

And yeah, it's definitely a chance to see a few characters I've been hankering to reveal! It's an open question whether Neptune HAS any Ascended adventurers, given how soundly she was beaten in the last few Console Wars.

Man, I really need to get around to expanding on the whole Ascended thing. I think I've been teasing that since the quest was in single digits.

I wake up early, and sometimes stay up late plus aforementioned, messing up my day time to time.

I must say I enjoy your thoroughly console-war ridden background interpretation, sometimes more than the official entries.
