>What happened last thread?
Waking up after a long day, you head out to the tailor and commission a pair of banners, flags, a surcoat and a new outfit. You decide that it’d be best to test the crossbows before selling them. After witnessing their spectacular power, you decided to arm ten of your own guards with crossbows, and sell off the remaining 4 crates. This should leave you with a profit of 540 ducats. After receiving an invitation, you prepare for a dinner party in honour of the Doge’s son, to be held at the Doge’s Palace. As you went to the church to ask for information on Matteo Orsani, you encountered Francesca. The two of you chatted briefly, before you invited her to the dinner. You learned that patrician Orsani has epilepsy, and that his warehouse guard can be bribed.

Together with William, Michèl and Desiderius, you decided to swap the shipments of weapons. Desiderius had come into contact with blacksmiths that made weapons of subpar quality. The plan was to take those shipments to the Orsani warehouse, and swap them out with the high quality shipments.

The dinner at the Doge’s Palace went well, as Francesca introduced you to a slew of businessmen and your nemesis: Matteo Orsani. After the event, you took Francesca home. The two of you both agreed to a courtship, but you’d still need her father’s permission.

>9th of August, 1095

After a long night, you finally wake up. It must’ve been around 10 o’clock. Did you really sleep for eleven hours? You groggily get out of bed, wondering which outfit to wear. Deciding that you should save your expensive set of clothes for a better time, you settle on the black & gold jerkin with a white tunic underneath. Last night exceeded your expectations, as you may have found yourself a possible wife. To top it off, she agreed to a courtship.

However, it wasn’t up to her. You figured that you should visit her father’s estate today, to personally ask for his permission to court his daughter. It was destined to be an uncomfortable conversation, as you’d have to convince him that you’re worthy. Today was also the day that you’d get to spend a lot of money. You still owed the tailor a 100 ducats for the flags, banners, surcoat and your outfit.

You notice that Edward already left for the church. You hadn’t seen him in a day, now. As you step outside, you wonder what to do first.

>Go to the tailor.

You decide that it’d be best if you paid off the debts to the tailor first. After all, you always felt more at ease knowing that you didn’t have to pay someone. You grab the black leather gloves from your belt, wriggling your hands into them one at a time. As you pass through the alleys, you see that a lot of shops are already open. Definitely must’ve been past ten o’clock.

Arriving at the tailor, you see Desiderius stepping outside, in a completely new outfit. You decide that’s about time you repay the favour. You begin to laugh as loud as you can, which causes Desiderius to notice you. He was wearing an emerald green jerkin, with a golden trim, over a black tunic. You had to admit that it looked somewhat stylish. As you looked further down, you see that he also bought a pair of grey leather boots. This only made you laugh even louder.

Desiderius folded his arms across his chest and looked at you with a frown. Your little laughing fit seemed to have drawn some attention, with a few traders stopping to see what was happening. “Are you done, Domenico?” It all felt too familiar. You slowly quiet down, stepping towards him. “You have to do something about those boots, Des. I’ll see you at the shop, later.” With that, you walked past him and entered the store.

The tailor stood behind the counter, apparently adding the recent transaction into his ledger. You take a few steps forward and put down a paper slip. “As promised, here is the payment for the commission. If you bring this piece of paper to my store, we’ll give you the money.” You decided that it had to happen on your terms. Walking around with 100 ducats was comparable to begging a robber to rob a King taking a walk alone.

The tailor eyed the paper, before he stuffed it in one of the many drawers. He was surprisingly quiet today, although it could be related to the fact that Desiderius just bought one of his outfits again. You turn around to browse the outfits.

You saw a line of mannequins with various sets on it.

There was one specific outfit that caught your eye. Coincidentally, it was in the colours of your family, as new as they were. You approached the mannequin, feeling the fabric. “Back for more clothes, hmm?” You glanced over your shoulder, the tailor finally paying attention to a customer.

“I suppose so. I’m looking for some more everyday outfits. I can’t wear the same thing every day.” You slowly say, looking back at the outfit. “Is it possible to get a coat of arms sewn onto it?” You couldn’t help but wonder. The tailor scratched his chin, as he narrowed his eyes at the chestpiece. He shook his head after some time. “It just won’t work. I could make you a cloak with one on it. You’ll need to provide me a drawing of the coat of arms, though.”

“I’ll keep it in mind.” You mention, collecting the clothes from the mannequin. “How much will ---“ You were quickly interrupted by the tailor. “It’s a cheap one. Five ducats.” You reach into your coin purse and give him the coins. Moments later, you were outside again.

>Go to the shop.

You wondered if the first shipments of weaponry had come in yet. It should’ve been the first thing you should’ve asked when you saw Desiderius, but you thought that payback was better. Before you’d go to the shop, however, you had to bring the new clothes home. After about forty minutes, you finally arrived at the shop.

It was awfully busy today, with a few women waiting to buy some fresh fruit, and the regular group of guards coming for the loaves of bread. Desiderius looked a bit overwhelmed, so you decided to jump in and help him out. It took you maybe ten minutes to finish everything, but you had earned around ten ducats in that time. Zero profit today, though.

After the entire rush was over, you and Desiderius sat down at the table. He immediately began. “We’ve got our shipment of sub-par weapons. We estimate it’ll take us about a day to get them ready for the swap. Do you have any idea how we’re going to pull it off?”

You pour yourself a cup of wine. You notice that a new cheese wedge was sitting on the table as well. Grabbing the knife, you slice off a part for yourself. Cheese and wine, two things you thoroughly enjoyed in life. “A well-placed bribe would suffice, I imagine. We should prepare about 15 ducats. Should be enough.”

Desiderius took the wedge and knife from you, slicing some off. “Alright. We’ll have to select some men to take the shipments tomorrow. I imagine that William will want to come along.” He paused, glancing at you. “Perhaps it’s good if you tag along as well.” You raised an eyebrow, taking a sip from your wine. “I suppose. I’ll have to talk it over when Michèl and William are here.”

The two of you sat in silence for a handful of minutes, before Desiderius spoke up again. “How was the dinner at the Doge’s Palace?”

You shrug your shoulders lazily, leaning your head back and closing your eyes. “It wasn’t that bad. I even met Orsani himself.” You pause, chuckling to yourself. “I’ll enjoy taking him down. The arrogant bastard deserves everything that’s coming to him.” You open your eyes again, noticing that Desiderius looked a little shocked.

You shrug again. “Just how I feel about all of this, Des.” You follow up. “Well… Okay. Didn’t you go with Boboni’s daughter?” He asked, as you simply reply with a nod. “How was that?” That got you wondering. Should you tell Desiderius about the connection you had with Francesca, or should you keep it quiet for now? “It was a pleasant experience. She’s smarter than she lets on.” You eventually reply.

Your conversation was interrupted by some customers entering the shop. Desiderius got up and stood behind the counter. You figured that it was time to head out again.

>Go to the warehouse.

You got up yourself, downing your cup of wine. You quickly say your goodbyes to Desiderius before you head out again. You suddenly realize that if business was going to expand, you were going to need guards outside of your shop as well. You made a mental note to ask William about it. You set off for the warehouse.

Once you arrive, you’re greeted by the guards. The doors were almost always open now, as you finally had enough people working in and around the docks and the warehouse. You spotted William on the pier. Walking through the warehouse, you noticed that a few long crates had been stacked near the entrance. Ten in total, probably filled with sub-par weaponry. If the switch went properly, not only would you be a lot wealthier, the reputation of Matteo Orsani would suffer.

As you approach William, you see that he’s already wearing the new surcoat over his armour. You couldn’t help but feel proud, seeing the deep blue colours with the white trim represented on the large man. “I take it you’ll be helping the men with the shipments tomorrow?” You say, standing next to William. He gave a nod, replying. “You should come as well. Maybe there’s something else we can take from their warehouse. It’d be risky, but it could pay off.”

You shake your head. “If I get caught, I’ll have a lot more to answer for. As long as you and the men remove anything that could identify us, we’ll be fine.” You gaze down the pier, the sun shining brightly on the ships. You could see that the sailors were still busy cleaning and improving on the old hulls, and a new pair of sails were lying on the decks.

“You’ve got nothing to worry about, Domenico. We’ll be set for months after this shipment.” William replied. He had shaved his facial hair completely. “Will you be ready to sail out on the morning of the 11th, then?” You ask. It was met with a nod, as you could hear Michèl shouting in French at some sailors. “We’ll be out of port for maybe three days. We can sell the weapons in Croatia, to fuel the war.”

You were suddenly reminded of your promise to the Doge. You weren’t allowed to sell weapons to any group or country whose interests conflicted with that of Venice. As far as you knew, Croatia wasn’t a threat of any kind, currently embroiled in a bloody succession war. Perhaps in ten, maybe twenty years they would rise up against Venice, but those weapons would be long gone by then. “Alright then. I still have some business to attend to.” You say, patting William on the back.

You make your way back to the streets.

>Go to the Boboni estate.

Figuring that you wouldn’t have enough time to go home and change into your other clothes, you head to the Boboni estate. As you got closer and closer, you began to wonder; what if you ended up marrying her? Would her father even allow you to court her? Would her father even have time for you? You sighed, running a hand through your hair. You were worrying too much. It’d all work out in the end, wouldn’t it?

As you approach the gates, the guards exchange glances. They open the wrought iron entrance without saying a word. When you didn’t walk through, one of them spoke in a slightly annoyed tone. “Master Boboni is expecting you. Walk on in.” You swallowed, reluctantly stepping forwards. The gate closed behind you again.

The door to the house opens as you approach it, with a servant waiting for you. Unlike most servants you’ve encountered, this one spoke Italian without any accent. “Right this way, master Particino.” You followed the man up a couple of stairs, until you stood in front of a heavy oak door. The servant knocked on it, and from the other side you could hear a voice ring out. “Show him in.”

Nervously, you took a few steps forward, walking into the solar.

You folded your hands behind your back, looking straight ahead. You had already seen what the head of the Boboni family looked like when you entered. From what you could guess, he was about forty-nine years old. Around the same age your father would be if he were still alive. When he spoke, he did so with a powerful and deep voice. “I hear from my daughter that you took her to the dinner at the Doge’s Palace.” He looked up from his papers, glancing at you. “Without asking me.”

You opened your mouth to speak, but he continued. “And now I hear that you wish to court her.” You couldn’t really gauge if he was mad. “I hear that you’re a merchant. That you lost your father in the same storm that cost me three ships.” He narrowed his eyes at you. “Why should I let you court my daughter?”

You swallow, beginning to speak. You tried to remain as confident as you possibly could. “Because I can offer her a good life. And because I’ve taken a liking to her.” You figured that was good enough, for now. The man measured you for a few moments, before speaking. “I’m supposed to let you court her because you’ve… ‘taken a liking to her’?”

You shake your head. “I came here as a sign of respect, to show that I value the position of the father as the head of the family. And I came here because I can see a future where I am with Francesca.” Your reply was met with silence. The man leaned back in the chair, folding his arms across his chest. “Domenico Particino, is it not?” You give a confirming nod.

“How can I be so sure that you’ll give my Francesca a good life?”

And he may have ties to Orsani because orsani may be employing his ships. Or previous business relationship. Not to mention Orsani only bad mouthed us he may have something against stealing and be an "upstanding citizen" that's all about doing things the right way.

Once we're looking to expand our shipments we can come to him, and he will have less doubts about going into business with us since he doesn't know we're a thief that takes others down to get ahead.

Yeah, but if we take over Orsani's business, he'll be able to rent the ships out to us, and we wouldn't be able to go back on our word, because we're married to his daughter.

Just doesn't seem like something that would be wise to do unless he said no, cause he doesn't know we can provide for his daughter.

>>46416525
>Tell him about your plans.
I guess I implied that we would tell him everything and that is crazy. I guess telling him, we're moving into the weapons and tools business as a way to expand would look great. along with we already have the permit's for it after talking with the doge.
>>

>Tell him about your plans.

You smirk, speaking a bit lower than before. Even though it was just the two of you, servants could be listening outside. And they could be taking another man’s money. “Because I plan to be a patrician before the year is over.” You couldn’t help but feel proud at the way you said it. The man looked somewhat surprised, leaning forwards a little.

“And you think it’s that easy to become a patrician? One of them will have to fall for you to take his place.” He replied. From the tone of his voice, you could hear that he was definitely intrigued. “And that’s why I’m planning to take down the Orsani family. Yesterday’s dinner only confirmed my plans.”

You briefly explain how your meeting with Matteo Orsani went at the dinner, how he had insulted you twice. “I see.” He replied, rubbing his chin. There was a silence for a handful of minutes, before he spoke again. “Very well. I’ll allow you to court my daughter.” He rose from his elaborate seat, extending a hand. You moved forwards, taking his hand and shaking it.

You could finally see his features, noticing the blue eyes and short, brown hair. Francesca looked a lot like him. “I hope I won’t regret this decision, Domenico.” You nod, giving a smile. “And perhaps, this might be a good opportunity to business as well. But let’s save that for another day, shall we?”

You shake your head, retracting your hand. “I think that’s best. I wouldn’t want to worry your mind with dealings at this hour. You should come by my store sometime, and we can discuss it there.” You gave a warm, welcoming smile. It was met with a short laugh, and a nod. “Very well. You’re welcome to stay here for as long as you’d like. If we’re going to be family, I think it’s only good if we get to know each other as well.” You couldn’t help but feel like he was thinking a bit too far ahead.

You bade each other farewell, and you left the room. You glanced down the stairs, spotting Francesca coming up. You folded your arms and waited, grinning widely. When she finally reached the landing, she nearly bumped into you. “Domenico! W—What are you doing here?” She managed to stammer out.

You looked around, making sure that no one was within earshot. No, her voice was like the one when you first met her; soft and quiet.

You shook your head, cracking a massive grin. “I just talked with your father, about our courtship.” You added a dramatic pause. “He’s allowed it.” Before you could even finish your sentence, you felt her arms wrap around you for a tight hug. You carefully returned the hug, looking around. From what you’ve heard, this isn’t the exact meaning of ‘courtly love’.

“Neither can I.” The two of you slowly unwrap, looking around discreetly. Thankfully, no one saw it. “Do you want to come with me to my store?” You quietly ask. You figured that all your advisors would be at the table right now, having some after-work drinks and cheese. It’d be a good moment to introduce her to them.

She nodded, speaking a bit louder now. “I’d like that. Do you mind if I go change first?” You shake your head. “I’ll wait downstairs.” You quietly replied, heading down the stairs as she disappeared in one of the hallways. You waited at the bottom of the stairs, inspecting the hall. You spotted a couple of paintings, of mediocre quality, and a couple of busts. Not an impressive collection.

After about five minutes, you feel a light tap on your shoulder. You turn around to see that Francesca has changed into a very sober, dark blue dress with white frills and trims. It looked incredibly new. Did she buy it today? Because of what you wore yesterday? You decided to let your advisors ask that later. You extended your arm for her, which she took gracefully.

>[LATER, AT THE SHOP]

As soon as you open the door, William starts speaking. The back of his chair is facing the door, so he couldn’t possibly know you had Francesca with you. “We need to talk, Domenico.” He paused, as you shot Francesca a glance. “We captured someone this afternoon. Trying to set fire to our warehouse.”

And that’s when you saw who was sitting across from William, with his wrists tied together. Otto of Bavaria.

You sigh softly, slowly taking a few steps forward. Francesca looked somewhat confused, but she quickly put on a stern look. You carefully take your arm back, leaning against the counter and folding it across your chest. Sitting at the table were Desiderius, William, Michèl and Otto. Upon closer inspection, you also see that Otto’s eyebrow had been busted open, and he’d been gagged. He looked at you with begging eyes.

Desiderius noticed Francesca, and shot both William and Michèl a look. “Maybe we should do this another time, gentlemen.” He slowly said, before glancing at you. You shook your head. “We can do this now. Just.. give me a moment.” You walk over to the counter, grabbing the pitcher of water and pouring it into a cup. You quickly down the contents, before walking over to the table. You sat down at the head, in your comfortable chair. “So, you caught him trying to set fire to our warehouse?” You slowly leaned back.

“Two of the guards did. Knocked him out and tied him up, then informed Michèl. I was out in the town at that time.” William replied. You glance at Michèl. “Did he do any damage? Steal anything?” It was met with a shake of his bald head. You sigh. “So, what do we do with him?”

William began first. “He tried to burn our warehouse, which is connected to our docks and ships in turn. He could’ve ruined us completely.” He paused, lowering his voice. “Let’s make him disappear.”

Michèl spoke up, the thick French accent making it sound pretty hilarious. “I say we take his hands, instead.” You realized that Francesca would get a very wrong image of you, if you decided to choose one of their options. Desiderius suddenly spoke up as well. “Whatever it is we choose, we have to make sure he can’t come back to get us in any way. We could send him to the Doge, or…” Desiderius looked at Francesca, then at you.

You poured yourself a mug of wine now, eyes locked with Desiderius’, as he continued. “Or we could use him to take out Matteo Orsani.” And there it was. You currently had three options:

To kill Otto, this would solve the Bavarian problem once and for all. To maim Otto, which would mean that he’d be unable to wield a sword, or do any work, but could still recruit people against you. Or, you could send him to assassinate Matteo Orsani, which had a large chance of backfiring. If he was caught, he’d surely rat you out. However, due to the fact that your men caught him trying to set your warehouse on fire, you have plausible deniability. They wouldn’t see it coming, and wouldn’t be able to trace it back to you.

While you could technically send him to the Doge, you also had to make a statement: You would not be fucked with. For all you know, Otto was sent by a patrician family. For all you know, he could’ve been sent by the Orsani. Sending him to the Doge would show weakness.

You had a lot of stuff to think over. And you also had to remember that Francesca was standing right behind you.

How about also get some information out of him. Seems like a good time to find out who he was working for, and see if we can profit from more information he may have.
He isn't a no body that's for sure considering he wants to feed and likely had some kind of means to pay for at least some of it and the transport back to where ever he is from. He is bound to have some useful knowledge.

>Kill Otto

You prop your right elbow up on the armrest, your forehead resting in your head while you think. There was a deathly silence, before you suddenly felt some hair brush against your neck and a soft whisper in your left ear. “He tried to ruin us. He deserves to die.” You glanced to the left, but the shape had already straightened his or her back. Could you have imagined that, just now?

After some deliberation, you raised your head and looked Otto in the eyes. The Bavarian pleaded with his eyes, but you’d made up your mind. You slowly raised your voice, noticing that it shook ever so slightly. “Make him disappear.” You could see the Bavarian’s hopes fading, as you glanced around the table. Your decision was met with silence, and you felt quite insecure. Until you felt a hand rest on your shoulder. It was as if the weight of the world was lifted from your mind.

William slowly rose, inclining his head to you. Michèl and Desiderius followed shortly after, lifting Otto up from the chair. You suddenly raise your hand. “Remove his gag.” You kept looking at the table, although you could hear the Bavarian gasp for air, then plead in his native German. “Who did you work for?”

It was met with silence. “Take him away.” That seemed to have done it, as Otto began to spill it all. “I don’t work for the Duke of Bavaria. I work for the rebels. And you nearly fell for it.” You’d heard enough. “Take him away.”

>Witness the execution.

After Michèl and Desiderius dragged Otto out, you rose from your seat. You turned around, eyes still downcast. You knew that this venture would lead to skeletons in your closet, and deaths on your conscience. You still weren’t sure who comforted you just now, but those questions were answered when you looked up. Francesca moved her hand to gently stroke your cheek, smiling softly. “Thank you, Francesca.” You quietly say, before you wrap your arms around her.

The fact that she had helped you in your decision only made you question just WHAT she was. She definitely wasn’t the shy girl you saw in church. She seemed to have a natural affinity for plots and intrigues, and possessed a surprising amount of knowledge of families. She returned the hug, burying her head in your shoulder just for a moment. “We’re in this together, Domenico.”

You slowly let go of her, offering your arm to her instead. The two of you walked outside, where your advisors were waiting. You had to decide where the execution was going to take place, and where the body was going to be left.

It was 10 o’clock in the evening, and there was barely any activity outside. The only people on the street were yours.

>Kill him at the docks.
>Dump his body in the water.

You beckon William over, muttering lowly to him as he approached. “Slice his throat on the docks; dump his body in neutral territory. Make it seem like he got mugged and killed. Check his body for anything else.” Francesca’s hand moved to your upper arm, gently squeezing it. William gave a single nod, before he turned to Desiderius and Michèl. You figured that this way, not only would you eliminate an enemy; you’d also test the loyalty of your advisors.

You follow the men to the docks, when Desiderius and Michèl unceremoniously dump Otto on the ground. He sits up on his knees and looks at all of you with the same pleading eyes as before. You wouldn’t forget that look anytime soon. It’d haunt you until your dying day. William pulled a dirk from its sheathe behind his back, looking over to you. With two strides, he stood in front of you, offering the dagger to you.

You hesitate for a moment. All eyes were on you, and you figured that you had to show strength. You took the dagger, taking a few steps towards Otto. You motioned for Desiredius and Michèl to grab Otto and turn him around. You looked up at the moon, taking a very deep breath. You grabbed Otto’s hair and pulled his head back, placing your dagger at his throat. You weren’t really sure how to do this, but you had to make do. You stabbed the dagger in the center of his throat.

The sounds that followed would haunt you for the rest of your life, and it’d be the sound that you’d remember until you dying day. Your first kill. Your first skeleton in the closet. Your first murder for power. Your first payback. You kept stabbing at Otto’s throat, hoping that the sound would stop. It didn’t. It only got worse, and worse. Eventually, you felt Otto slump, and he dropped to the ground as soon as you let him go.

You stared in horror at the body of Otto, blood gushing from his throat. You felt William’s heavy hand squeeze your shoulder. “You did good, son. You did good.” You held the dirk out for him to take. Desiderius and Michèl looked at him for a few moments, before using their feet to roll him into the water. There was an uncomfortable silence, before they exchanged glances. You understood; you’d see them at the shop tomorrow.

They left, one by one. Leaving you with Francesca.

You felt shaken. You’d just killed someone, and heard the sounds coming from his expiring mouth. You nearly broke down then and there. Francesca put comforting hand on your shoulder, speaking softly. “I think we should go home.” You give a silent nod. You led the way to your home, no physical contact with Francesca on the way there. You felt sick, miserable. After a long twenty minutes, you opened the front door to your house.

You hadn’t even thought about Edward. You wouldn’t be able to face him. Not right now. Francesca walked in with you, as she looked around your very average house. It wasn’t particularly good looking, but she didn’t seem to mind. After walking over to your bedroom door, you turned to her, not sure what to say. You weren’t even sure if you could say anything. She gently took your hand, her eyes gazing into yours.

>10th of August, 1095

It had to be around eleven o’clock. You woke up with Francesca in your arms, both of you comfortably lying under the blankets. Last night contained more firsts than you could possibly imagine. Last night also meant that you now had to marry her, but… strangely, that didn’t bother you at all. You quietly watched her for some time, until she started to stir in bed. “Mmmh.. Good morning, Domi.” Was the first thing she said, and it somehow hit you far deeper than anything ever had. You loved her.

You planted a soft kiss on her lips, “Good morning, Francesca.” You softly whispered as you slid out of the bed. She sat up, covering herself instinctively, quietly watching you get dressed. “Last night was.. crazy, wasn’t it?” She softly asked. You couldn’t help but grin, doing the buttons on your blue tunic. “It was. Do you want me to bring you back home, or do you want to come along with me today?”

She dropped back on the bed, looking up at the ceiling. “I think I’ll come with you. It’s good to know what my husband-to-be does in his daily life.” She smiled widely. After another hour, the two of you stood outside. It was twelve o’clock.

>Go to the shop.

As the two of you set out, you feel Francesca’s hand grasping for yours. You give her a warm smile, squeezing her hand a little. You felt confident, although the gurgling sound coming from Otto’s throat still haunted you. You could still see his eyes, begging for mercy. You had to try and focus on the day, anyways. Today was important.

The two of you arrived at the shop faster than you’d imagined. Desiderius and Michèl were sitting at the table, snacking on cheese and trading stories. You walked over to the head of the table letting go of your lover’s hand. As you sat down, Francesca took the seat to your left. Desiderius and Michèl looked at the two of you, before bursting out in laughter. At that moment, you noticed that Francesca’s hair was still a bit messy. She straightened it with a red face, her head lowered in shame. Desiderius passed you the cheese, grinning. “Congratulations on the engagement, then?”

Now it was your turn to get red, which was met with laughter from the two of them once more, as you took Francesca’s hand. “I suppose so.” You poured a mug of wine for everyone at the table. Michèl rose from his seat, and began. “As we say in my hometown…” He then proceeded to say something in French, but you hoped that it was good advice. He raised his mug after saying it, and all of you took a sip. The party would have to wait, however.

“Now, as much as I’d like to know about you two, we have business to take care of.” Desiderius suddenly said. You let go of Francesca’s hand as you leant back in your chair. “As we speak, William and his men are swapping the shipments. We’ve already decided on selling to the Croats. Michèl plotted the route, and I’ve taken the liberty of calculating how much we’d earn.”

You stroke your chin in thought, your elbow leaning on the armrest again. You took a slow sip from the wine. You spoke up. “I’ve currently got a debt of 150 ducats. We need to take care of that before we can move on with our business.” You sigh, looking around the table. Desiderius nodded. “From what I managed to work out, our treasury will hold 1135 ducats by the end of tomorrow. I managed to sell the crossbows for 560 ducats, and we estimate that the weapons we’re stealing will go for about 500. Added onto that the repaying of the 150 ducat debt, we’ll be set for the coming few months.”

You nod, looking over towards Michèl. “How long until you can sail out, and how safe is the route?” You ask. Michèl scratched the back of his neck, looking up at the ceiling and narrowing his eyes. “We can sail out within two hours of the shipment arriving at the warehouse. The route is relatively safe, taking us from coast to coast. We should be back the day after tomorrow.”

“How many captains do we currently have?” Francesca suddenly chimed in. “Two, but enough crew to man four ships. We’re still looking for capable captains.” Desiderius quickly responded. “That being said, we can manage with two ships for now. We expect to steal our next shipment on the 13th.” Michèl suddenly said.

>Prioritize hiring captains.

“There’s no need to hurry with finding captains. William is the admiral, and he is more than capable at finding men fit for captaincy.” You say. It’s met with nods around the table. You finally slice off a piece of cheese, offering it to Francesca. She takes it silently, quickly taking a bite from it. You pass the cheese over to Michèl. You figured that a Frenchman would appreciate some good cheese.

Desiderius slowly began to speak, clearly hesitating more with every word. “About.. last night, Domenico. You didn’t have to kill Otto, but…” He just stopped, with Michèl finishing his sentence. “It was the right call. You won’t regret it.” It only made you doubt your decision more. What if it -was- the wrong decision? You took a man’s life. Francesca gently took your hand again, noticing that you started to stare at the table again.

Michèl got up from his chair, inclining his head. “I’m going to take a look at the warehouse.” You suddenly snapped out of it, looking up and nodding. “Very well. Send a message when you’re ready to set sail. Send a sailor, or something.” You absently say. Michèl nodded and left. Just you, Desiderius and Francesca now.

You turn to Francesca, squeezing her hand again. “I suppose that we’ll have to ask your father for permission soon. Or well… I’ll have to ask him for permission. Don’t you think it’s a bit too fast?” You weren’t sure about it, but it’d only been three days. Then again, Desiderius often fell for a woman completely in one night. The master himself opened his mouth, “You went to the dinner two days ago, didn’t you? As evident from your appearance this morning, the two of you really hit it off.” He grins, downing his wine.

Francesca blushed once more, before speaking in that soft voice you’ve started to love. “I think it might be best if you ease into it with a gift. Like a bottle of wine.” You hadn’t thought of that before. You’d essentially be bribing your future father-in-law with a bottle of wine. It was worth it, though. “I think we should tell Father Federico first. He’s the one that sort of.. introduced us, anyways.” She continued, letting go of your hand and slowly getting up. “I need some fresh air. Excuse me, gentlemen.” She curtsied and headed outside. You could see her through the window, sitting down on the bench.

Desiderius turned to you, lowering his voice. “Well!? How was it? How was she? It’s a good feeling, isn’t it?” You couldn’t help but chuckle, leaning back and taking another sip. “It was.. different. It felt right. She comforted me for about the first hour, then we enjoyed eachother, I suppose.” You replied, somewhat insecure about it. Desiderius put his hand on your shoulder, looking you in the eyes. “Congratulations, brother. I really, really mean it.” He got up and opened his arms, ready for a brotherly hug.

You shoved the chair back, getting up and embracing your best friend. You wouldn’t have survived the past two years without him. He was more valuable than you let on at times, and his advice was always welcome. The two of you pat eachother’s back, before separating. “I think you should go see your fiancé, Domenico.” He smiled, patting your shoulder again. “And once again, I’m so happy for you. I really mean it.”

You finish your mug of wine and head outside, where Francesca was enjoying the warm afternoon soon. You held out your hand for her. “Shall we, Franny?” You decided to try out the new nickname. After all, she called you ‘Domi’ this morning. You hadn’t been called ‘Domi’ since you were six. She gave a pleasant smile, before taking your hand and getting to her feet. “Where to, Domi?”

“I thought it might be good to visit Father Federico.” You reply, as she clings to your arm again. You couldn’t help but wonder how long it took her to brush it all in the morning. You’d find out soon enough, anyways. The two of you set out for the church. After you reached the halfway point, she looked up at you, “Father Federico told me about Edward.”

You weren’t sure how to respond. She continued, “He also mentioned that you thought about adopting him.” She paused, smiling. “I think that adopting him is a good idea.” That definitely surprised you, as you hadn’t given adoption any thought since you discussed it with Father Federico. “Are you sure, Franny?”

She shrugged lightly, before speaking once more. “I imagine you’ll make our firstborn the heir to the trade empire, so.. Why not?” Ouch. She was already talking about children.

You nod, smiling in return. “I don’t see why I wouldn’t. Having your own bloodline continue is more important than having a bloodline that isn’t related to you.” You felt like the sentence came out weird, but you shrugged it off. She lowered her head again. She seemed to do that a lot when she was happy, you noticed.

A few moments later, the two of you arrive at the church. Father Federico was working outside, taking care of the flowerbeds next to the entrance. The old man turned around upon hearing the sound of boots approaching. His face absolutely lit up as he saw Francesca hanging from your arm. “Domenico, Francesca. It’s so good to see you two.”

Francesca let go of you, giving the priest a deep curtsy. “Father Federico.” She reverted to her ‘shy’ voice again. You inclined your head. “Father. It’s good to see you outside.” You grin, rarely having seen the old man working outside in recent years. “How is Edward?”

Surprisingly, Francesca asked the question. You could see the surprise on Federico’s face as well, as he stammered a little, “H—He’s doing fine. Why do you ask, my child?”

You cut in before Francesca could answer, “Well, Lady Francesca and I discussed it on our way here.” You paused, smiling at the priest. “Her father approved of our courtship. We already decided that we’re getting married.” The old man’s face lit up, as he leaned on his cane while he moved to the two of you. He shook your hand first, speaking in an intense voice. “Congratulations, my son. I’m so incredibly happy for the two of you.” He then moved over to Francesca, giving her a tight hug. “And I’m so happy that you finally found the person you were looking for, Francesca.”

It humbled the two of you, that much was sure. But you still hadn’t told him why Francesca asked about Edward. This time, she cut in before you could answer. “Thank you Father. We were actually thinking about… adopting Edward.” Now, you there were not many occasions that you’d seen the priest caught completely off-guard. This was one of those rare moments. Once again, handshakes were had, and hugs exchanged.

“I already told Domenico how I felt about him adopting Edward, so I’ll tell you too; taking in a child who has lost his parents and relatives is a virtue. It is akin to what He would do. I reminded Domenico of the story of Esther, who was raised by her cousin.” The old man sounded a bit weaker than normal. Perhaps his prediction of dying before 1096 was right.

You reckon you only had time for one more question.

Your fiancé smiled, lowering her head again. “I’m humbled, Father. Could I perhaps meet Edward?” She asked the question before you did. The old priest nodded, motioning for her to follow him. As the ever dutiful husband, you followed right behind her. You leaned in to whisper in her right ear. “I haven’t seen Edward in two days now. Do you think you could explain why?”

She peers back at you, shrugging faintly. “I’ll try, Domi.” She pecked your cheek quickly, causing your cheeks to flush just a little. “Thank you, Franny.” You returned the peck, before allowing her to walk ahead again. “Wait right here.” Father Federico said, before disappearing into one of the many rooms the church had. You sat down on the pew, waiting for him to come back, Francesca sitting right next to you.

After a couple of minutes, Edward came from the back room. He looked at you with wide eyes, then looked over to Francesca. As she got up, he slowly approached her. She sat down on one of the steps to the altar, and he sat down next to her. The two of them started chatting, although you noticed that Edward was still choosing his next words carefully. He was making progress, at least.

Father Federico moved over to sit down next to you, leaning on his cane as he did so. “Consider this another favour done, my son. You needed a wife, and I set you up with one that also has a powerful father.” You couldn’t help but feel a bit weirded out. Did he use the two of you as nothing but pawns? You decided to forget about it, quietly continuing. “Father, I was… wondering if you could officiate our wedding. Seeing as you officiated my parents’ wedding.”

The priest rubbed his grey beard in thought, before smiling. “Ofcourse. Now, if I may be so bold to ask, how are things going with your plan against the Orsanis?” You lean back on the pew, watching Francesca and Edward laugh. “If all goes well, we’ll have swapped one of their shipments today.” You replied. The two of you had some more small chat about your youth, before you got up. Francesca bade Edward and Father Federico farewell, before taking your arm and heading outside again.

“I suppose it’s time we should get you home.” You say, as soon as you step outside. It was met with a sad look. “Hey! Don’t be like that. We had a very… fun night, and I hope you enjoyed today.” You grin afterwards. “I suppose it’s only fair. I take it we’re gonna keep last night a secret?” She quietly said, making sure no one could hear it. After all, sex before marriage was considered an absolute sin.

The two of you went on your way, occasionally stopping at bridges to look at the canals, or some buildings. Venice was a city that never ceased to amaze you. Despite sticking mostly to the western quarter of the city, you felt like it was as big as an entire country. After strolling for an hour, you arrive at the gates to the Boboni estate. There was only one guard on-duty today, who simply inclined his head to the two of you, opening the gates shortly after.

As the two of you walk into the courtyard, you decide that it’d be a good time to say your goodbyes. She lowered her head again, hiding her face with her curly brown hair. You looked at the front side of the house, wondering if anyone was looking from the windows. Your efforts of remaining discreet were quickly dashed, as Francesca planted a soft kiss on your cheek. “I’ll ask one of my guards to take me to the shop tomorrow, alright?”

Nodding, you softly speak. “Maybe you can stay at my place again, as well.” You give her a wink, before the door to the house opened. One of the servants steps outside. Francesca rolls her eyes, heading up to the servant. Moments later, you were standing outside the gates again.

OP, is there any way that we could help Father Federico advance through the ranks of the Church?

It'd be amazing if we could get him elevated to Bishop, or I daresay, even a Cardinal!

He's turned down numerous promotions as well. He prides himself on not taking any bribes. His church runs solely on donations and generosity.

>Go to the warehouse.

You hadn’t received any message from Michèl or William yet. You wondered if everything had gone according to plan. You set off for the warehouse, arriving some thirty minutes later. It was around five o’clock now, the sun already low in the sky. The first thing you noticed when you arrived was a constant stream of sailors carrying crates.

William appeared from out of the warehouse, laughing loudly. “Domenico! Good news!” You raise an eyebrow, folding your arms across your chest and lightly tilting your head. “Now you’ve got me curious, admiral.” Some more sailors passed you by, carrying more crates of weapons. William’s eyes shone with pride.

“That bribe we gave the guard worked out better than expected. He shared some of those ducats with the warehouse’s quartermaster. He ensured that the records in their ledger were altered. This allowed us to grab fifteen crates, instead of ten.” You couldn’t believe your ears. Thanks to a single well-placed bribe, you managed to make an additional 250 ducats.

“I trust you’ll sail out as soon as possible, admiral?” It was met with a single nod from William. “Within the hour.” He held out his hand, and you gladly shook it, patting his upper arm with your free hand. “I’ll pray for favourable winds, and favourable profits. Michèl mentioned you’d be back on the 12th, and you’d be able to steal the next shipment on the 13th.” William’s nod only confirmed Michèl’s earlier report. You bade your goodbyes, as he retreated back into the warehouse. You were already counting your wealth.

After a long day, you decide to head home and get some well-deserved rest. The rest of the night went by quite uneventful. Tomorrow proved to be a quiet day, and perhaps you could spend some more time with Francesca.

That’s all folks!

What did you think of tonight's thread?
Do you feel sorry for Otto?
What about the promise you made to Francesca?

>What did you think of tonight's thread?
Pretty good, there was some solid character development for us. The relationship progressed pretty dam quickly, but I feel that they both compliment each other well.

>Do you feel sorry for Otto?
Not at all, you play the power game at your own risk. We just have to work to ensure that we're never in the same situation.

>What about the promise you made to Francesca?
I don't see any reason for not keeping it at this point.

Thanks for the thread mate.

In a time where people can die at any given moment, it's good to marry young and have as many kids as possible. Besides, she was turned down by quite a lot of men. There's definitely something more to her, and you saw it during the Otto sequence.

Do you mean the one about our children? If that's the case then I really wish we had said that we would give it to the most qualified son.
