>Split the squadron- Carolina to the lifeboats, Arroschere to the transitory. (Difficulty 25 Test to remain in com contact, Difficulty 25 Test to reunite if contact is lost)
>TEST PASSED

It was crunch time, an opportunity to see if your little squadron could operate divided. An active com contact on one hand, the perfect target for yourself and the Arroschere. The other was a mess of lifeboats, which meant all of the fresh plebeians. There was quite literally no better chance for you to do this.

“Jasper!” you yelled up to the Carolina’s nominal captain. “Get a signal to Arroschere! I need to get aboard!”

After what would eventually become an ensign finished running about, you got transferred back to the Arroschere and hit the gas hard. Down in the Radio Shack, the Signalman got to work hammering his radio rig to the Carolina.

//Arroschere to Carolina, com check, say again, com check over//

//Carolina to Arroschere, reading three by three, over.//

//Arroschere to Carolina, acknowledged, out.//

As you cut through the waves, you grinned madly from the bow. With her tender cut loose, Arroschere flew through the waves, while the Carolina plodded gracefully to the swarm of lifeboats.

//Arroschere to Carolina, com check, over.//

//Carolina to Arroschere, three by three, over.//

//Arroschere to Carolina, you find any good booze, over.//

//Carolina to Arroschere, negative. Still looking though, over.//

Approaching the active signal, you frowned. It was a long, sleek boat, decked out in tons of lights. Slowing your approach, you had to think hard. This ship looked inhabited, by people no less. Time to see how you were going to get into this thing.

“Can radio make contact?” you ask to the messenger on the bridge. He goes down and returns, frowning.

“No, sir.”

Well, crap.

As I said before, this covers our asses in both directions. If they're weak, well we come off as confident and polite and not mindless savages. If they're strong, we've got less chance of getting our tits shot off.

In other news, how does the crew think of us? What's their opinion of our personality? We need to be a leader of men, not just someone who press-gangs others and rules by the gun.

>Crew Opinion

The specialists you have are fairly behind you, in the spirit of "he might be a bastard, but he's Our bastard, damnit." That said, there is a lot of improvement that could be done in regards to their opinion of you personally. They mostly trust your leadership, but if you can't keep them in what little luxary they have the Warriors or Engineers are going to make like the Praetorian guard and play kingmaker.

The plebeians are a mixed bag. The more recent they are, the happier. Fresh water, a place to sleep that's not an orange liferaft, and the possibility of protection make them solidly behind you. The older ones are more disillusioned, especially the ones who were kept in the bow compartment of the Arroschere. If it came to an uprising, the two sides would be evenly matched.

You currently do not have any contact with whatever is left with the outside world, and know nothing about it or any polities out there.

See about getting on
>>
>>46442113
Makes me wonder how fucked the world is, not just in terms of politics, but industry as well. How long until we fall back to 1600s-level tech?

Mmmm... Tall ships and muskets...

But regardless, we need to work on that. We need to be seen as the best possible person to lead, not just the best one at the moment. We need luxuries, stability and possibly even a land base; a Tortuga that sees us as its first citizen and that we can leave the unused plebs in as a protectorate.

And if the nations of the world have survived in more than scattered pockets of roaming survivor-scavengers, we will need to make ourselves useful to them as well. Smuggling is always a nice side to piracy, but we need a place to produce stuff for that. Vikings had their halls, pirates had their ports an we need something similar. Also, it'd help to have a central place to look into what the fuck's up with the walking dead- I'm getting way too far ahead of myself.
>>
>>46442393
I don't think we could handle a land base. Even isolated ships with zeds that have been rotting since the start, we lose a lot of people. On the sea, there's next to no chance of a random zed horde finding your base of operation and being able to get to you unless you sail right up to them.
>>
>>46442393

No, you're about ten minutes behind my own worldbuilding. The biggest problem right now is decay. How long before you stop finding working guns? How long before ammunition spoils? How long before hulls start sinking? How long before you outpace your ability to salvage? How long before lifeboats start showing up with dehydrated corpses instead of people? How long before cities are overgrown? How long before fields go back to woodlands? How long before factories crumble? How long before books decay?

How long?
>>
>>46442436

There's a kicker- what about islands?
>>
>>46442527
Zeds can wash up onto them easier than they can climb up the hull of a ship.
They aren't guaranteed to be empty to begin with.
Then there's the whole deal with constructing reasonable housing on an island which may or may not have building materials for it.
>>
>>46442552

Another smart Anon! /tg/ is really earning it's reputation today!

As for Zed, he's fairly human. Namely, he needs to eat, drink, shit, sleep, and keep his blood inside his skin. While some may be able to cross island-to-island, I doubt it.
>>
>>46441576
>Politely see about getting onto their ship
>>
>>46442436
Not yet, certainly. We need the resources, the followers and the industrial base that we can get best by raiding, just like how the Vikings brought home more than gold and silver. At sea, it's a lot safer and easier to gather (if not to find) resources. Once we have enough, we can set up a settlement that's defensible without going through the awkward adolescent stage of being big enough to attract predators and not yet strong enough to fight them off.

>>46442527
Depends how big the island is, Wolf. If it's something even the size of St. Lucia in the Caribbean, you're still looking at nearly 200,000 zombies on the upper end. Anything smaller and it's not likely to be inhabited.

>>46442507
Too many variables. If it's properly stored, ammo could last anything up to 10-20 years. If it's badly stored, you're looking at 2-3. Guns can be repaired and maintained, especially if it's made in the Soviet Bloc; they're still digging up AKMs that were buried in the Afghanistan desert in the 80s that work almost like new once they've had the sand knocked out.

Now, ships? God knows. Weather could knock some out in weeks, while others could stay afloat for a decade or more before sinking or running aground. Salvage... I'm amazed we're lasting as well as we are. Supply is infrequent and we're always one missed meal from a mutiny.

Dead lifeboats though... 3 hours in extreme weather. 3 days without water. 3 weeks without food. However, it's more likely we'll find empty boats, as madness takes the survivors and they try to swim for 'land' or start eating one another, etc.

Cities could be fairly decayed in 10ish years... Pripyat has been abandoned since the Chernobyl disaster 20 years ago and is still recognisable as a city, if a decayed one. Fields to forests... God knows. Light forest, maybe a generation. Heavy forest, perhaps a century.
>>
>>46442762
Factories, I'd give them 5 years before it'd take some really serious effort to get them going again. 10-12 and they'd be unusable except for salvage. Too much of that kit needs regular maintenance. Even if it's not running, it's gonna fall apart FAST. Casual effort to start it up again would likely be useless after just a year or two.

Books... Oh man, we need to secure technical manuals and things like historic technical documents of steam engines and the like FAST because if a library window gets smashed, that's fucking IT. Books are valuable and unfortunately, VERY perishable. The good news is that the internet at least is DESIGNED to withstand the downfall of society. Individual servers may fail, but if we can find a terminal, we should be able to pull a lot of information that we can use.

Basically, the longer we wait and dick around at sea, the worse things are going to get. Countries... Maybe a couple would survive? Some army bases definitely, but they'd be over-stretched with refugees and many would probably fall to internal issues before the Zeds got em.

>>46442620
Come to that, what makes the Zeds so dangerous? If they're mostly human, they should be relatively easy to kill. Even if they out-number the army 100 to 1, a good kill-zone and enough ammo can chew through them no problem. What's their endurance like? Are they sprint, ambush or endurance hunters? What IS a zombie?

...We're gonna need to research them, aren't we? It's only a matter of time before we need to look into how to beat special types and find out where they come from (still got my fingers crossed for mystical stuff. Our resident French waif is REALLY interesting). In short... We need Z-Com.

Nodding, you get ready to perform a potentially hostile boarding. This was going to be very tricky- you were going to need a way to get there without tying your ships together. A yellow life raft would go great right about now…

>Talent Check: PASS

Thankfully, one of your more entrepreneurial Engineers had stashed one of them on the boat after getting it’s survivors. Rounding up your Warriors, you got to play the explanation game as you all boarded the yellow dinghy. As the Engineers snickered at you and your Warriors flail-fest, you looked back at them.

“The first one to mention the song ‘Yellow Submarine’ is coming with us.” You muttered, wrenching the yellow thing around. As the Warriors break out into the Beatles, you groan dejectedly.
>+1 Moral
“Why do I come up with these bright ideas?” you ask, groaning. As the ex-liferaft gets into the drink and you start moving. Getting to the other ship, you grapple up and board, all the Warriors ready to tangle.

“ANYONE HOME?” you bellow out.

Silence answers.

If there's Zeds or hostiles here, there'd be more of them belowdecks. Last thing we want is to explore the tower, then get cut off from our escape.

By the way, what was that a few thread ago, about the source for the zombies being dependent upon the traits we choose?
>>
>>46443420
On the contrary.
The last thing we want is to go belowdecks and have zeds from the tower trap us down there.
A tower is much, much easier to escape from than a hull that's meant to resist being breached.

Disease. Zombieism is passed on via body fluid, and has a high latency period, followed by high fever, delirium, formication, and then you're a zombie. The high fatalities come from the fact that during the latency period, an immensely less potent version happens to be airborne, which means you can get zombie outbreaks in the middle of a residential area.

Add in the fact that zombies travel and roam in hordes, you loose cities because zombies in skyscrapers, you loose suburbia to hordes, and you loose rural areas to lack of critical resources and small hordes.

>Enter the conning tower

Going into the coning tower, you watch your warriors carefully. Knives and short spears are out, edges gleaming as doors are opened carefully. There is no caution spared, as you push through the area. Dark corners are probed, doors are opened, and the distinct lack of zombies gets disturbing. The craft is lifeless, barren. You’re even fairly sure that there is a faint “new boat” smell wafting about, somewhere.

“Boss, you might want to check this out…”

Going over to the nervous warrior, you look inside a room. Inside sits dozens of swords, along with a handful of guns scattered along the walls. In the center is an anvil, while a furnace burns away in the corner. Walking in, you hang your flail on your belt and take a very appreciative glance along the walls. For some reason, though, each weapon is very carefully inscribed with a name. A katana named “Amagi”, with a set of kanji next to it. A Mauser, the word “Scarnhost” engraved into the stock. A longsword, marked “Richelieu”.

“Don’t. Touch. Anything.” You intone, glancing around.

“Wise move.” A voice says, from behind the anvil. “Welcome to my humble boat.”

Well, fuck. There goes your chance to salvage this thing without resorting to piracy.

“Thank you for signaling us. I hope you don’t mind us coming aboard,” you say politely.

“No, I don’t mind.” The Voice said, a glimmer of a smile in it’s tone. “However, I find my ship is rather infested. If you could remove the walking corpses, I would be much obliged.”

You scratch your chin. “Unfortunately, we’re in a bit of a pickle, then. I can’t in good conscious risk my men’s life for no gain for us or them. If there was a form of compensation, or trading for services rendered, then I could aid you.”

“If you choose to clear my ship, then I will grant you and your men one weapon from my armory and one piece of loot apiece, to be collected when you are done. If not, then I have no hard feelings for the event. However, either way you choose, do me a favor and leave the Luger here. It is rather badly in need of some work you can not provide. Take another weapon to replace it from the armory when you do- I cannot fail to make a fair trade.”

Also, as for the Luger, it's German. You would be amazed at the levels of autism regarding reliability they had. There's a reason they only lost three ships at Jutland.
>>
>>46444751
The only issue with guns is that no matter how reliable they are, if you have no reliable source of good-quality ammunition, it's worthless.
Unless it's got a bayonet.

Spears are fucking ideal for this kind of zombie. Boar spears especially.
>>
>>46444797
Boar spears, yes.
You could spear a zed, hold them off while they bleed out and die.
Hell, you could use the zed stuck on the boar spear to stop other zeds from getting to you.
>>
>>46444797
Boar spears are indeed great, but in confined spaces like below decks, I'd personally go for a cutlass or tower shield and gladius. Can't go wrong with a big bloody thing to hide behind and push with, while you've got a workman's stabbing and cutting blade in the other.

>>46444751
Odd... I always heard the luger had a tendency to jam a lot. Guess that was bullshit.

And about the zombies... The infectiousness is one thing but that alone shouldn't be enough... Maybe there's just more to it we haven't seen yet, I mean the ocean is hardly a zombie's natural habitat.

Oh god, zombie shark-cavalry and possibly ghost or plague ships. Urrrgh...

What if we run into zombie boars on an island?
Or even just a regular boar? They're more dangerous than zeds!
>>

Boars eat dead zombies all the time. Live boars, however, are a greater danger than Zeds if you ever decide to colonize the Southern US.

But yeah, that's a concern. We're mainly ship-based though, so sword-and-board's a good way to go. There was mention of the Varangian Guard in earlier threads; there are plenty worse things to model ourselves on.
>>
>>46445326

OH GOD NO.
>>
>>46445323
I'd imagine that Boars are actually thriving quite well these days, since they have absolutely no issue eating live humans. Packs of boars probably take out a few zombies every month with minimal injuries. Their skin is so fucking thick that I doubt a zed will be able to wound it easily at all. Seriously, boar hide is RIDICULOUS.
>>
>>46445360

>>
>>46445446
It's actually unlikely. Diseases, apart from a few notable exceptions, don't spread well from animals to humans and visa-versa. You nodded. “Looks like we’re clearing the ship.”

The Voice sighs. “Thank you. Please avoid wrecking my ship.”

*
When you found the hatch to below the superstructure, you and your men smelled the fetid air grimly.

“It’s going to be a fucking mosh pit down there.” One of your warriors remarked grimly, her eyes crinkled. “We slip, and it’s all over.”

You shake your head. “We would have heard them by now. I’m going in first.”

Leading your way in, you almost retch at the smell. It reeked, and you could see the bottleflies hovering over the utterly massive piles of shit.

“What in God’s name were they eating and drinking?” you ask to the pit of filth. The low roar of the bottleflies responds with increased agitation. Keeping your jaw locked shut, you groaned.

“Get down here, and don’t open your mouth.”
*

In the guts of the ship, you found a suprising amount of zombies. You burned through two mags of ammo in the first three compartments, and were on your last mag when you entered the deepest bowels of the ship. For some reason, it had a massive draft- you could feel the waves hitting the hull over your heads. Thankfully, most of the Zed were coming in ones and twos, letting you all deal with them easily.

Then you opened up a compartment and gasped. On a throne of corpses a zombie sat, skull showing through its battered hide in a few places. As it rose to it’s feet, you heard it moan low, a sound that could shake the minds of men loose from their fragile foundation.

This was obviously NOT what they had trained for, prepared for, fought before. Combined with the environment, your warriors held still, excepting the newest. He fell back, crying out in pain while holding his ears.

“Make it stop!”

Unafected, you looked at the zombie and grinned. That stopped when you met its eyes. There was a feral hunger there.

>Ranged Combat check: 21+5. PASS

Drawing your Luger, you cocked it confidently and started shooting. It was a dirty secret, but you had tried out for SWAT teams four years running, and frequently stopped the instructors cold when you cleaned house down at the ranges despite having the fewest practice hours logged of anyone in the county. Repeating the Mozambique Drill twice, double tapping the chest, and then swearing as you clocked out was dead easy for you.

>Melee Combat Check: 18+5. PASS

Switching over to your flail was less easy as the monster zombie got closer. Spinning up, you started hitting it, dancing around the lunges and pounces it tried to perform. It takes dozens of hits, more than anything else you have ever faced. Panting, you finally manage to deliver a strike to the neck, where you then proceded to finish it off with a round to the back of the head from your absolute last-ditch half-empty magazine. Looking back to your warriors, who were barely dragging themselves back together, you grin, exhausted, at them.

“Pussies.”

This is actually a blessing in disguise.
The men saw us, in action, against something that would have slaughtered them if they tried to solo it.
This will instill a certain respect for our combat prowess, AND our mental fortitude.

Going up to the upper ship, you and yours dripped blood and zombie shit from everything below your waist. Entering the same room as before, you gasp. Instead of a spacious room with a centerpiece forge, there was a full-bodied armory. Rifles dangled, swords gleamed, and wood shone.

“Hold up.” You told your soldiers carefully. “We need to make a descion or two before we start taking things.”

What kind of sword is this one, btw?
>>
>>46445743
What the actual fuck was that thing?

I think we may have tempted the QM to bring out the big guns a little too soon, lads. Damn, right as I need to catch some shut-eye, things start getting good.

>A weathered tanto, marked Kirishima in Latin script on one side and kanji the other
The fancy shit's a trap and a long-arm will be a liability in boarding actions. We want the good knife.

>Short arms in .45
Again, short arms are better for boarding actions. The big issue will be finding ammo however.
>>
>>46445816
"rifle" and "sword" are fairly ambiguous
>>
>>46445875
Given its name, if I had to guess, I'd say cavalry saber, unless we're told otherwise? Anyway, I'm hitting the sack. Even if we pick sword, it'll make for a good, "We're in charge," piece.

>>46445900
Yeah, are we talking bolt-action? Semi-auto? Automatic? What make or model? What caliber? Firearms are great, but they need ammo.
>>
>>46445900
Yes. The sword is shorter one-handed design, closest to the XVIII on the table I posted earlier. The rifle is something German, chambered in .30-06

More thematic music, by the way.

Also, before I forget, LEVEL UP! Character sheet is at the link, and just like before there are three points to put into the ten skills and five ability points. I'm going to write up abilities in a minute.

That's a dumb, stupid thing to do
Everything of the same tier should be of the same level of usefulness

It was originally esigned as a throwaway concept, not a throwaway skill. An Intimidate is just a reroll. Besides, they're all about the same usefullness.

Teaching Voice only effects your ship, so you'd be stuck on the Carolina or it'd be next to usless.

Stormrider only works on squalls, not Sea Conditions

“Melee weapons only.” You said, watching the Warriors sigh dramatically. “I do not want to have to worry about ammo, or jams, or any of that other crap. Swords, spears, knives, whatever. Pick good things.”

After much sighing and theatrics, your Warriors entered the room. Most of them chose swords, swishing them about a handful of times to get a feel for them. One, the female not-quite sergeant, chose a straight-backed tanto, but that was the only exception. You followed the trend, going over to the board of weapons nobody else had touched. Looking over the weapons, you ruled out the rifle almost immediately. The choice was then narrowed down to a nice watermarked tanto, or a sword that had a distinctly American feel. Picking up the sword, you held it in your hand, looking down the short fuller in the blade. Dangling from the hilt was a small tassel set, the blue and red and white reminded you of a flag, draped from a crane. Feeling it, you frowned for a second- these were cotton tassels, but the American flag was almost never made in cotton these days- yet the colors were right on for a flag, done using the secret methods only flagmakers knew. It was an oddity, you hoped, nothing more. Sheathing it, you picked a sword belt for it and put it on carefully, noting how naturally it fell at your hip. Placing the Luger on a table, you looked your men over and beckoned that they withdraw.

“Thank you for your assistance.” The Voice said, when you were done. “If I have need of your services again, then I shall certainly signal.”

“You’re welcome.” You say, smiling.

As you all re-board your yellow life raft-STOP SINGING THE SONG DAMNIT!!! You go back to the Arroschere.

“Ackerman.” You tell the captain, “Make sure we get some grub in the boys guts. Did good work. Any news from the Carolina?”

“Yes, sir.” He said, straight-faced. “They have recovered approxemently four hundred persons.”

You spat out your water.

“FOUR HUNDRED!?!”

“Yes, sir. They’re swamped. They also managed to, quote, ‘build a fucking sextant to find where on the cunt-fucking map our shipslut is.’ End quote.”

“I do not remember Jasper being so foul-mouthed. What happened?”

“He caught a bad case of dysentery, sir.”

Ouch. Your bowels twinged in sympathy.

“Crap. I take that then that was his first mate?”

“Fourth. Apparently there were some ladies of the evening, and the second and third mates decided to take advantage. Both had the clap, and Captain Jasper’s last standing order was that the second and third mates were relieved of command until he could, quote, ‘cock-slap some fucking discipline into the morons who didn’t have the sense God gave a Vegas stripper and package their meat.’ End quote.”

“Hmmm. Does this fourth mate have a name?”

“Acting Captain Carmine Trump.”

You spat-take, again. Really needed to stop drinking when your first mate was giving you the news.

“You mean we rescued a daughter of Donald Fucking Trump?”

“A bastard daughter, and yes. She seemed quite pleased that her father was presumed dead.”

Well, score one for the odds.

“Send to the Signalman to find us a course that links us up with the Carolina. I need some sleep.”

Many zeds are still likely to be clothed.
People keep valuables in their pockets.
Survivor-zeds are bound to have the best stuff, even if they're rarer.
We could absolutely rob the shit out of zombies to pay stuff, even if humanity at large has likely reverted to barter systems.

I belive at some point this or last thread I mentioned that zombies in the early stafes suffered from formication. This is not fornication, IE sex. This is the "insects beneath your skin" feeling many meth addicts experiance during withdrawl. Considering the meth adocts have been known to slice their arms down to the bone to get the bugs out, I find it very easy to belive the zombies all stripped off ASAP.
