The last day or so has been rather hectic for you. In addition to discovering Blue’s betrayal you were then set upon by Hiss for spending too much time loafing about while everyone else was preparing. It didn’t take long for her to bundle you up on a cart and have you shipped off with everyone else.

And that’s where you are right now, sitting atop a wagon. A wagon in an entire chain of wagons no less with Hiss’ breathing corpses marching on either side. Everywhere you look you can see the dead, snakes and humans either marching or tending to carts not unlike your own. The host left Melire behind several hours ago and is travelling north towards Taldenral. It’s actually happening. There is going to be war.

You slide yourself off the moving cart and only stumble a little. You’re not getting anything done just sitting down. Where do you go?

>Visit Hiss. Isn’t she commanding all of this?

We need to make permanent physical buff brews with treebrew. Like potence and regen+healing. Maybe even champion brew

>Get some brewing done

On the other hand, there's no need to get anything done just yet. For once you're not actually NEEDED anywhere and you don't have any urgent responsibilities. So why not sit back and work on your alchemy? Chances are that you'll need it.

And besides you feel a little awkward walking around right now, your clothes have been rather tight since your last growth spurt. Better to just stay in the wagon.

Treebrew or caster brews. We always get interrupted after we restock and then we don't experiment at all.
>>
>>46465070
that's false equivalency since experimented takes longer and we'll be even less prepared if we don't restock.
>>
Could we soak our clothes in a Eugene potion, demorph them, and make them grow to our size with another treebrew? Probably only works on living organisms but maybe not. Otherwise we may just have to make a reverse treebrew unless you guys are particularly attached to being seven feet tall
>>
Yo restock anons start thinking of what we need so we don't take forever to decide like always

Eugene's rejects only work on living creatures unfortunately. You do have a brew that shrinks unliving things however. It's vital to carrying your lab around.

>>46465217
I believe the inventory bin is up to date.

Anyway, looks like a tie. Evens for restocking, odds for experimenting.
>>
>>46465217
I'm not sure you realize how long traveling by wagon takes. Also I'm pretty sure the pastebins are all up to date
>>
>>46465239
A reverse collapsible brew would be nice but it doesn't last very long, which is a problem. Also I kinda like being freakishly tall so I'd rather not shrink our body back down. Should help our throwing range, increase our reach with sword fights, and help us handle caster recoil better.
>>
Little late, but we should work on something for art detection and/or protection. The king probably has a small army of seers, alchemists and maybe a few wizards.
>>
>>46465294
Maybe we could combine antimagic and the champion brew?
>>
>Experiment

You get back onto your wagon, noting mournfully your scattered bottles and lab glassware as you do so. Since Blue destroyed your pack you had to dump all of your junk into the wagon and declare it off-limits to anyone else. Until you acquire another good pack you're going to have to rely on your bandoleer to store all of the potions you want to have on hand. But that doesn't mean that you can't brew more right now!

You'll probably need every single one of them.

>Experiment with treebrew.

>Experiment with treebrew.

It's strange, you've been a plant for months but aside from a few splashes of treebrew here and there you haven't really done much with it. But maybe now is the time.

>Oakskin: This brew is permanent and as long as you are a plant, will toughen up your body as if it was carved entirely out of solid wood.

>Tangle Elixir: Injecting yourself with this will causes a change that is permanent for as long as you are a plant, allowing you to hasten or slow your transformation as you will. You will be able to put down roots or grow additional muscle mass or prehensile branches just by thinking.

>Sunflower Brew: This brew will turn you permanently photosynthetic, lending your skin a green shade while colouring your hair bright dandelion-yellow. You will no longer need to eat, drink or sleep and will have increased regeneration by spending time in direct sunlight.

>Bramblebrew: Drinking this induces a permanent upgrade for as long as you are a plant. At a whim you will be able to adorn yourself with long thin spikes and thorns wherever you wish. They are extremely sharp.

>Hollow: Applying this brew to yourself will cause part of you to become a woody hollow space within your body. This space can store liquids for an extremely long period of time and can be expelled at will. Not only does this turn you into a living waterskin but it also allows you to store potions within your body.

>Reverse Treebrew: This potion causes plants to shrink. Pretty self-explanatory really.

>Rootkin: You can use this potion to grow into either a tree or flower. You will be completely indistinguishable from them and capable of very limited movement while possessing the perfect disguise.

>Other (Specify)

You can choose multiple but it effects how much time will be spent.

You spend almost all of what's left in the day squatting inside of your wagon as you work the cauldron.
At one point Orange pokes his head in, clearly wanting to talk to you about something but since it isn't urgent you wave him off and set him to acquiring you a new good backpack. He hasn't returned since.

It's been several hours and the sky has dimmed but it's finally ready! Before you sit two syringes and one bottle, all full to brim of plant-based concoctions.
Oakskin. Tangle Elixir. Bramblebrew.

>Leave the main host before using them.

This might get a little freaky at first before you get it under control. And indeed, it would probably be safest to test them out on someone else but what kind of alchemist doesn't use himself as a test subject?
A healthy and long-lived alchemist, that's what. And you've never particularly been a paragon of either.

You leave your wagon and do your best to walk your way out of the host. There are a lot of people here! More than you count. You can spot some of the snakes who haven't yet fully learned the ways of humans, they move too well or not at all and they're too clean and attractive. But there are plenty of genuine humans in their midst as well. Mercenaries? Conscripts? Volunteers? People whose will has been bent to Hiss'?
Probably a mixture of all four. You try not to think too hard about that last one.

And then of course, there are the living dead. Hiss has been very busy in that regard. Every corpse is but a potential vessel to hold one of the many human souls inside of her and they're all completely loyal and undying. Hiss might have had to let her Melach servants go but she's replaced them rather well.
You've talked to a few and most seem rather happy with what's been done to them, even counting out the fact that Hiss has digested their free will. Most are happy to simply live again. You wonder if Hiss has told them that their souls are eventually going to rot until they're nothing but crazed automata like the Children.
And then you have to wonder if you'll ever end up like that. If you were dying and Hiss begged you to thaw out your soul so that she may pluck it out and seed it anew, would you deny her? The slow rot into insanity may be preferable to death.

You leave them all behind and find a small copse of trees off the road that shields you from their view. This should do it.
You don't waste any time. You drink the bottle and plunge both syringes into your arm in quick succession.
1/2
>>
>>46466675
You hope you're using them right.

At first nothing happens but you quickly start to feel a heat building up within your guts. There's something wriggling and squirming inside of you and it's growing! It fills your throat and your mouth and you sink to your knees in pain. The dirt feels good.

And then it passes.

You breathe a deep sigh and try to stand up only to realize that you can't. Pale roots are growing from your legs and your arms and digging deep into the ground around you! Your skin is craggy and covered in thorns and you can already feel thin branches thick with leaves worming their way through the skin of your head and back.

You can't even panic. You're tired and this feels good. Do you really lose anything by just closing your eyes and falling asleep?

You let your eyes close and as you fall asleep you can feel the bark growing over them and sealing them shut.

You let yourself go and for a long time there is only dark.

...

At some point you become aware of a different dark and your sleeping mind begins to panic. What the fuck is going on? Did you really just set down roots? You need to wake up!
If you were still sleeping that would have worked. You haven't become a tree permanently after all, you simply fell into a tree-like state as you slept. Waking up, however long it took, would solve this problem.

But you can't wake up. Something else, something vast and sinister and as black as night has you in its clutches now. Being a tree is the least of your problems now.

You try to squirm or escape but you can't, there can be no movement here. You're trapped helplessly within the coils of a monster so large and regal that you are but a gnat in their presence while their unseen fangs lurk in waiting.

"You know Cennen," the monster says in a conversational tone. "You really try some dumb shit sometimes. You moron."
You feel something idly flicker through your memories as if they were nothing but a picture book. You remember this feeling. It was from back when you first met-

"Hiss!"

"Yes? That's me."

"What are you doing here?"

"Excuse me? This IS me, why wouldn't I be here? You're completely inside of me now Cennen. Like a mouse inside my gullet."

It's hard to think.
"That shouldn't be possible."

"It was hard work getting your homunculi to tell me which bottle was probably the 'Thawing Solution' but it must have worked because you're so deliciously vulnerable right now. You have no idea how tempting it is to just eat you right up."

"What? Why?"
Your mind blurs under the weight of Hiss.

"Because I'm not going to leave you in a fucking tree you idiot! And don't worry, I've been very gentle with your soul. Although...," and now her tone turns both playful and malicious.

Hiss laughs.
"You always see right through me, huh? Well, you're not wrong. I like you mostly as you are. That said..."
You suddenly recollect most of your last few months at once and you can't stop yourself from screaming.

"I can't say I approve of some of these things you've been thinking about me over the last few months. A narcissistic control freak? I mean, what is with this? >>46467303 . That's a bit rude."

"Given the circumstances it's at least a little appropriate don't you think?"

"Hmph. And look at this. I had no idea you were so into Tanni."

"Stop the teasing Hiss. Just drop me into my body."

"Sure. Just be happy I don't put you into a rock or something. Up you go."

The void fades as Hiss spits you out and you find yourself slowly waking.

You're sitting inside some kind of large palanquin, Hiss' personal one if you were to guess. When did she get that built? You're curled up in a fetal position and sitting half-buried in a large pot of dirt. You retract your roots with a thought and marvel at how your body alters itself at your command.
Now that you know how soporific being a tree can be you'll be able to handle it.
You pick your way out of the dirty pot and only then do you spot Hiss lounging opposite you in her human form.

"Thanks Hiss. For not eating me and whatnot."
It's a little sad that that's something you feel like you have to say but positive reinforcement is positive reinforcement.

Hiss waves you off.
"Oh, it was nothing. My pleasure."

"And sorry about all that plant business. I was actually fine but I can see how I must have caused you all to panic. You see, I was actually using some modified treebrews to alter my plant nature and-"

Hiss makes a derogatory gesture with her hand that resembles a crude mouth just opening and shutting over and over again. You get the hint and stop talking.
"Don't worry about it, I literally saw all of that when I ate you. I know what happened now."

"So you wouldn't mind then if I explained how it all worked? It was just an application of-"

"I caught that bit too. I know literally all about your dumb plant stuff Cennen."

"Oh."
You can't help but feel deflated. This isn't the first time Hiss has just dismissed your accomplishments and you're sure she doesn't really mean anything from it but it can affect you sometimes all the same.
"So uh, nice palanquin."

"Yeah!"
Hiss looks much more enthusiastic about this topic.
"I loved them back when I was in Quedesh! Not just the comfort but the symbol. The power! Why walk when you can show everyone that you can make humans walk for you? And better yet, everyone supporting us right now is dead so they'll never tire! It's really smooth."

You nod even though you can't help but feel a little uneasy.
"Any other Quedeshi ideas you feel like adopting? You said they had some good ones, right?"

Hiss narrows her eyes.
"Oh no you don't. I see what you're doing here. You're trying to lure me into a question so you can bemoan some aspect of my morality again aren't you? It's your second-favourite hobby."

"I don't think it's unreasonable to be concerned about Teleran's future. I'm helping put you on the throne here and I just want to be sure that what I'm doing is the right thing."

Hiss nods and looks thoughtful.
"I guess it depends on your definition of the 'right thing'. By my definition it is. Mine is the only one that matters by the way."

"Yeah but I need to know that stuff like...like the Pit is behind us. And that you won't institute some Quedeshi system of snake supremacy or slavery."

"Yeah, I understand what you mean. But don't worry Cennen I'm not tied to some ridiculous system of beliefs like our crippled 'friend'. I will make my judgements fairly as the circumstances demand. But you have to understand what that entails. I won't raise serpents above humans based on what they are. But I WILL note that my kind is, generally speaking, physically and magically superior to your kind and will treat them as such. Exemplary humans like yourself can still rise but you should expect something of a snake aristocracy simply because on average they're better equipped to handle it."

You frown. You suppose that's the best you're going to get.
"And what about the slavery?"

"Oh, what need do I have of slaves? Teleran is fantastic! I just need to accrue all of the money and people will happily be my slaves for me! I believe that is how your human system works. I won't be changing anything there."

"And you won't change people's souls without cause?"

Hiss looks away for a moment.
"You have to understand that it's very easy. The moment I have a problem I always have the option to look them in the eye and make the problem go away. It's so very tempting."

You think back to Hiss telling you about how the world was made of glass.
"I think I understand. But it's not sustainable and it's not ethical."

"I think we've gone a bit too far for 'ethics' but I'll give it my best shot."
She leans back, somehow managing to recline even further.
"Any other concerns?"

You scramble over to her side and draw her close with an arm around her shoulder. She doesn't resist even though she does look a little uncomfortable with how much bigger you are now.
You don't try anything further than that and she seems willing to just lean into you and absorb your body heat. She's as cold as ever of course.

Eventually you find yourself turning to what could be the start of a difficult conversation.
"It's strange that you should mention Aash's faith..."

"Eh?"
She looks up at you with half-lidded eyes.

"Didn't you see that in my memories?"

"Contrary to how I may seem, my dear Cennen, I am not all-powerful. I can't skim every detail instantly. Especially when I was looking for anything to do with trees. Aashenpreet has nothing to do with them save a similar girth."
She snickers quietly to herself.

"Well I think there's something I should tell you then."
You give her a brief description of what you did to Aashenpreet and you grow queasier as you tell it for Hiss's smile just grows wider and wider.

"Cennen! I'm so proud of you!"
She wraps her arms around your chest and pushes up against you.
"I'd been wanting to do something like that to her for AGES."

"What, really?"

"Naturally. She's an insolent cripple. But I'd always held back because I thought you were concerned about her. Good job."

Her praise inspires more shame than pleasure.
"That's not what I intended to do, Hiss. And besides, I helped make it better."

Hiss laughs.
"No you didn't. That kind of thing is going to fester inside of her forever. I can't believe you got her to try and kill herself! That's amazing!"

Well Hiss certainly seems to have cheered up but it's had the opposite effect on you. You sit there silently for some time, ignoring her frisky half-attempts while you ponder what you've been doing.

"Those are still happening! But it was a little harder keeping everything entirely secret than I thought. The King knows about me, Cennen! He knows about me and he tried to KILL me! If I hadn't still had my Hunt Sense from my Blood he might have succeeded too! We can't let that stand!"

"And you don't think that's what he wants? That he might be trying to draw you into a trap."

Hiss shakes her head.
"Let him try. We still have moles on the inside and he has no idea what we truly are. That remains our biggest advantage. And once all sees our stupendous victory they will know not to test themselves against me!"

"Alright okay but you've never done this before Hiss. You might have eaten humans that have before but you've never personally conque-"

Hiss pulls out a vial of dark liquid out from behind a cushion and before you can react, dumps it all over your head.
You cough and splutter and rub it out of your eyes.
"What was that? What the fuck?"

But your question is being answered for you as you feel yourself start to diminish, your body shrinking slowly back down to Hiss' level...and maybe even a bit lower than that. Hiss grins as your eyes slowly draw level with hers.
"You're far from the only alchemist in Melire, you know darling. I figured at least one of them had something to make plants shrivel."

"Oi, let m-"

Hiss sticks a finger into your mouth.

You think for a moment about resisting or even turning the tables on her. You could do it and you know she'd like it. But in the end you decide against it. Let her have her victories.
For a moment you could have sworn that Hiss looks faintly disappointed as she drags you down.

....

You slowly wake once more from your exhaustion-induced slumber. How long have you been out? Probably all night.
Hiss lies naked beside you and you can feel your body already readying itself once more the moment you behold her.

She's sort of huge though, at least a foot taller than you. Just how much of that vial did she dump on your head? What height are you now?
You reach around for your clothes and find them to now be much too big for you.

It's hard to do it in the palanquin but you'd estimate that you're now around an even five foot in height. That's a full foot below that of the normal man. Zigzag size.
You're not sure what to make of this.

Hiss murmurs something in her sleep as you move around but doesn't wake.

>Start brewing up a treebrew inside.
>Feed Hiss a taste of her own medicine.
>Then nobble her

Oh no, you're not going to let her get away with this. A strange plan springs to mind and you grin. You're not going to just nobble her, oh no. Or at least, not yet.

First you get to work brewing. It's lucky that Hiss seems to have had most of your potions and lab stuff brought into her giant palanquin so she could thaw you out of your plant shape or else you wouldn't be able to do this.
You cook up a treebrew as quickly and quietly as you can. You see Hiss' nose twitch as she smells it but you finish it before she can wake.

The amount you prepared is large and is just enough to get you back to being six foot five. But you're not done yet. You have to get revenge.
You locate two potions, the Shapeshifting brew and a Thoughtbrew.

You don't try and feed them to her while she's asleep, you're not fucking suicidal. And besides you know that makes her feel awful. So you wake her up first and then, while she's still half-asleep offer her both bottles to drink.
She blinks at you blearily and downs both of them in quick succession.
"What are those?"

You sit down beside her and whisper into her ear.
"You are feeling very small."

"Wha?"
The Thoughtbrew quickly gets to work however, influencing Hiss' thoughts with that phrase. She IS feeling small. And those are the thoughts that the Shapeshifting brew has to go on.

It's not long until she's down to five foot tall instead of you.
"Cennen? How dare y-"

You push a cushion over the top of her and nobble her while she's still confused. She glares at you when she's released.
"Is this how I'm going to be greeted every morning with you now? Undo this and return me to my proper size immediately."
She's very cute when she's angry like this.

"What's the matter, you can dish it out but not take it?"

You can hear her grinding her teeth from the other side of the palanquin.

"You see, this is the problem Hiss. Just because you win the first battle you assume you won the war."

Hiss doesn't look particularly swayed by your arguments.
"I didn't let my guard down because I thought I had won. I let it down because I trust you Cennen."

Oof.
"I know you do. And that's why I did this. Because I know this is what you want even if you're usually too afraid to admit it."

"You assume too much."

You reach out and pull her over to you. She doesn't resist, even with her far greater strength.
"Do I?"

She seems incapable of speaking further. Neither of you need to.

......

You get dressed slowly, feeling fatigued already. Hiss is lying over in the corner in a state of half-consciousness. Well, that's not strictly true. She's still awake but she's having a little trouble thinking straight for now after what you wished for.

You kiss her on the forehead and she moans. Hard to believe this is the would-be conqueror of the country.
But it's not like you took this moment from her, it was what she wanted. If you had actually crossed a line she didn't want to cross she would have made her displeasure known in a rather painful way.

She gurgles something incomprehensible. Best to leave her to sleep it off.

Which is why this is an exceptionally bad time for someone to start harassing the palanquin from without.

"Let me though! I need to see her. No it's not urgent, it's a personal matter. Your majesty?"
You recognize that voice. It's Oster!

He might not like what he sees here.

>Wake up Hiss first and help get her tidied up.

Your course is clear here. Hiss wouldn't want anyone knowing about this. You can't undermine her in front of her subjects, she'd probably kill you. You certainly wouldn't be getting any of these kind of moments again.

You wake Hiss up as best you can and feed her a quick restoration brew as she sheds her skin and retakes her usual size and clothing. You're always amazed at how she emerges from it, even now. Not a single hair out of place.
She nods and then shakes her head at you, indicating that you should leave via the left side while she pokes her head out of the right to speak with Oster.

You do so as best you can. It's deep in the night outside as you climb down the left side and you avoid looking any of Hiss' dead carriers in the eye as you do so.
Hiss doesn't invite Oster in. You can guess why. Instead she pokes her head out to speak with him.

You don't even try to overhear as you walk away but you can't help pick up little bits and pieces.

"...Please your Majesty, just let me make it up. I let him past the rooftop!"

"No! You will stay here and you will do your job, do you understand?"

"I failed you. Just let me get out there and prove myself to you. To myself as well."

"What part of 'do you understand' do you not understand? No!"

They're still talking as you walk out of range. You're not sure what to do now. All of your stuff is still in the palanquin.

>Wait for Oster outside.

You haven't had much time for Oster for a fair while and he sounds like he's in a bad way so you decide to wait in the darkness a small distance away for him to be done so you can talk to him.
You end up waiting a surprisingly long time. The argument finishes within just a few minutes but Oster remains by the palanquin for hours afterwards. Guarding it? You suppose so. It's only when the very first fingers of the pre-dawn light reach up beyond the horizon that you see him stride away. He's not heading back towards camp though. He's heading towards Teleran and he's doing it through the scrub near the side of the road.

You do your best to follow him and it only takes a minute before he notices you and beckons you over. He looks drawn out and tired.
"Don't try to stop me Cennen."

"What's up mate? What are you doing?"

Oster purses his lips.
"I was up on the roof the night the assassin came. He slipped right past me. Do you understand that? I failed. If he had killed the Queen it would have been my fault."

I don't think he would want our help. He wants to prove his own personal self worth
>>
>>46470778
I think you mixed up Teleran and Taldenral. Teleran is the country and Taldenral is the capital city right?
>>
> "And what do you intend to do about it?"

"Don't take it too hard. The King's assassins are probably the best of the best and we all make mistakes."

"Not like that Cennen. When it comes to matters like this I can't afford to make mistakes. Neither can you. None of us can."

He's not entirely wrong.
"Then what do you intend to do about it?"

Oster pulls his poncho over his head and grimaces.
"I'm going ahead to Teleran alone. And I'm going to kill the King."

"That's...that sounds pretty dangerous man."

"It will be. The odds of a safe exit strategy afterwards is slim."

Yeesh.
"I'm not entirely disagreeing with you here mate but...you know you don't have to do this right? You don't belong to Hiss anymore. You're your own person! You don't have to die in her name."

"I know that!," Oster snaps. "Hiss ordered me to stay here. It's because that I'm my own man that I can choose to ignore her."
He stares you down, the mark of servitude clearly branded upon his face.
"That's what I need you to understand. This is my choice. I don't care if the Queen forgives me and forgets my mistakes but I won't. And I never will unless I at least try this. So don't try to stop me Cennen."

> "Stop you? How can I help you?"

> Try to stop him.

> "Maybe you should wait until after we first encounter some of the King's men."

> "Just promise me that you're not going to throw away your life."

> "If Hiss asks about you I won't be able to lie."

> Give him some booze.

> Raise an alarm.

I did it again in this post as well!

They may have scrounged the remains of the Snakecatcher, or even caught some of hiss's spies. Last thing you need is to try and off him only for it to be a snake.
>>
>>46471101
I need you to go there and put an end to the snake alchemy going on there. Sabotage and kill them all. We left a huge amount of snake reagents when we were there last and I fear they could actually make effective weapons against us.

perhaps a bit more reservedly, "if you're going to do it at least use all your resources"
also
> "Just promise me that you're not going to throw away your life."
>>
>>46471134
No worries, I'm always mixing them up too.
>>
>>46471101
Tell him about the snake reagents and supply him with whatever he needs regardless of his choice
>>
>>46471101
Can we combine >>46471182 and >>46471195
to try and convince him to change his goals from a suicide mission to forerunning sabotaging and recon?

That'd help us a lot more than him dying trying to prove a thing.

Shapeshifter?
Potence?
Name it, bruv.

That much of a headstart
>>

mm we should probably make a guard homunculus for hiss in any case, something that can warn of threats and the like

>"I respect that, but think about this: what happens if you get captured and they interrogate you? They probably have the means to make you talk, even without breaking your will. Even if you take out the king, you'll put them up to speed about us"

inb4 he kills liss since she's an alchemist that got her hands on a snake scale
>>
> "Stop you? How can I help you?"

You grin and cross the distance between the two of you to pat him on the back.
"Stop you? How can I help you?"

Oster smiles as well and takes his hand off the hilt of his sword.
"Give me a headstart with her Majesty. That's all I'll need."

You blink.
"You don't want any potions? I can get you whatever you want."

Oster shakes his head.
"Nah, I'm doing this the old-fashioned way. I have to."

"I can't say I approve but I understand. Just promise me one thing Oster."

"Aye?"

"Don't throw away your life for nothing."

"I don't know if killing the High King of Teleran is 'nothing'."

"You know what I mean. At least do some recon of other stuff while you're there. Make sure that the rest of the vanguard is safe and that there isn't any snake alchemy afoot. We left a lot of reagents back there after all."

"Oh so no big deal, just a little bit of everything? Nah, that'll be easy. I'll get that done first."

"Thanks."

"No. Thank you Cennen. I was half-expecting to have to cut you up tonight but I should have known you'd understand."

"Cut me up? You'd have been welcome to try."

Oster snorts.
"When did you become such a cheeky little cunt? Well no worries mate, we'll meet again. In this world or the next."

"...Or the next," you echo as Oster disappears into the bush.

You can only hope that you'll see him again.
>>
And that's that for tonight! I planned to go a little bit longer but I think that little Teleran slip definately means I've gotten too tired. I need to sleep.

Thank you all for playing, check the twitter, thread's been archived, etc etc. I hope you all had fun!
