You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

The Battle for Midway was finally over, but the war with the Abyssals was far from over.

Shortly after the death of the Midway Princess, all Abyssal resistance completely broke down. Apparently, the Princess was acting as some sort of central intelligence for the entire Abyssal force, and without her presence, all order broke down. The larger and more advanced Abyssals quickly made their retreat, while the smaller and less intelligent ones either threw themselves at the enemy with reckless suicidal abandon, or lost the will to fight completely.

Obviously, Vahlen and her shady science cabal had quickly whisked away all of the valuable Abyssal corpses, including Tanager and the Midway Princess without a single word of where they were being taken or what would be done with them. She was already gone by the time the media arrived scant minutes later, brought in courtesy of the Navy to document the assault. Their feet didn't even touch the sand before they started spreading news of the victory worldwide. Already, congratulations from various navies and nations were flooding the Admiral's desk, much to Sam's alarm.

Casualties were relatively light. Several planes were shot down or damaged, but the Marines took the brunt of the damage, with several hundred dead or wounded. However, the biggest casualties lay within the shipgirl force. While no shipgirls were sunk, practically all of them were damaged or exhausted to varying degrees. From what you heard from the Captain, the USN's shipgirl force wouldn't be back up to full readiness for months. In particular, Iowa and Midway had taken serious damage. Mulberry passed out shortly after defeating the Midway Princess, and remained asleep.

Thankfully, the conventional fleet, which had sat back safely in the rear lines, was practically untouched, and there were already talks of starting escorted supply convoys to Asia.

But all of that didn't matter to you as you tried to relax in one of the temporary repair facilities hastily constructed by Mulberry's fairies on the beaches of Midway. You took rather light damage, but the warm healing waters still felt like heaven.

"So you're telling me," Portland blinked, "that you TALKED to the Abyssals?"

Oh right, there was that little matter, too.

So far, you had only told Portland this. Your sisters and the rest of the task force still didn't know yet, and were on the other side of the pool, doing whatever it was they did. Johnston was apparently teaching Luce, Wren and Daly wrestling moves while Heerman kept a watchful eye on them. White Plains was still looking glum over all of the planes she had lost, with San Diego trying to keep her spirits up.

Meanwhile, Ontario was also present, doting on a very annoyed looking and heavily bandaged Haida. Ontario was literally spoonfeeding her hot chicken noodle soup, and even though Haida complained "that shit is for kids", she pretty clearly was not protesting too hard. You also noted the Fletchers looking on quite jealously.

"Yeah." You confirm to Portland. "But it was weird, like, we weren't talking over the radio or anything. It felt like we were talking through our minds... like that psychic shit on TV?"

"This sounds very much like your 'incident' with the Wo..." Portland frowns. "Maybe that's the cause...?"

"Dunno." You shrug.

"Hoel, this is serious." Portland adjusts her glasses as she stares at you. "We have to go to the Admiral, or even Vahlen, for this. It could be a huge breakthrough or... a sign of something bad."

"Oh, are you worried about me?" You grin.

"I'm worried about the whole fleet." Portland responds defensively.

"We might as well go now!" You declare as you stand up, splashing water everywhere.

"All right." Portland nods as she turns to the rest of the task force, who are looking curiously. "Carry on, we just need to debrief the Admiral on a few things."

Coming from Portland, none of the other girls question her and return to their previous activities. Portland pats you on the shoulder and directs you to the changing rooms. As you both dry off and start getting dressed, you notice Portland wincing in pain as she pulls her shirt on.

"Just sore, huh?" You raise an eyebrow skeptically.

"A little." Portland assures you. "Let's go."

The two of you stride out of the temporary dock, which, for privacy reasons, was covered with a large white preconstructed fabric dome. Not only did this protect the resting shipgirls from the elements, but it also kept them away from the eyes of prowling reporters and media. The exit is no different, being covered by a large white, fabric tube that leads to the temporary headquarters while the Midway base is rebuilt. You can't see much outside, just vague silhouettes of both humans and fairies as they went through the cleanup and construction efforts.

Posted all along the tunnel are heavily armed Marines, who all salute you as they pass. From what you've heard, you've made a rather good impression upon them, storming the beaches alongside them.

Soon enough, you reach the main command tent, where both the Admiral and the Captain were coordinating the cleanup and mop up efforts. Sam was present too, tasked with the unenviable duty of filtering the Admiral's mail, and was being completely overwhelmed. The pained, pleading look she gives you as you enter communicated that she just wanted to die already to end the suffering.

"Ah, Sweet Pea, Hoel! How nice to see the two of you!" The Admiral chuckles. "What brings you here?"

"Admiral, can we speak privately?" Portland asks softly.

The Admiral's eyes immediately narrow as he gets the point and looks to the Captain. The Captain coughs loudly to get the attention of the rest of the staff in the command tent.

"How about we all take a break for now?" He asks, the hard stare he gives indicating this 'break' was not optional. " Fifteen minutes."

The command personnel don't question his words and immediately shuffle out, kindly zipping up the tent flap as they leave.

"So what was it that you wanted to talk to us about?" The Admiral asks.

You tell him everything to the best of your ability. How ever since that incident with the Wo, you've been having weird dreams. How you've actually communicated with the Abyssals, and their attempts to tempt you to their side. And how you used that power against them to distract the Midway Princess at the critical moment allowing Mulberry to defeat her. Not even you fully believe all the shit you're saying, but the Admiral, Captain, and even Sam are dead silent until you finish.

"W-whoa, she's... she's kidding, right?" Sam laughs nervously.

"She appears to be quite serious." The Captain frowns.

The Admiral remains silent for several more seconds before sighing and looking right into your eyes.

"Who else have you told about this?" He asks.

"Just Sweet Pea." You point to her.

"I see, I see." The Admiral sighs. "This is a serious matter, which, unfortunately, is beyond my capability to handle."

"A-admiral?" Portland blinks.

"If only Mulberry were awake, maybe she could have imparted some knowledge on us. She had a greater understanding on the nature of Abyssals and shipgirls and possibly even Vahlen." The Admiral sighs. "But as it stands, Mulberry has not regained consciousness. I'm afraid we will have to consult with Vahlen on this matter. She's our next best expert."

"What?!" You exclaim. "No way! I don't trust her!"

"Um, Admiral..." Sam speaks up. "Maybe San Francisco can help? You know, since she-"

It was kinda a bind, honestly. One the one hand, San Francisco was a very unfriendly bitch. On the other, Vahlen was a very shady scientist of questionable ethics. However, if you were absolutely forced to choose, though, you'd rather choose the bitch. You could deal with those.

"I'll talk with San Fran, then." You sigh.

"I'll call her right over." Sam says as she whips out her phone.

It's another few minutes of awkward silence before the dark haired cruiser reluctantly enters the tent, a fresh bottle of whiskey in her hands and a cigarette in her mouth. However, upon seeing the Admiral is present, she quickly snuffs out he cigarette and tosses it out the entrance. But the bottle of whiskey remains.

"So, what is this all about?" San Francisco grumbles.

"San Francisco." The Admiral sighs. "It appears that Hoel may have a problem. A problem like yours."

San Fran's expression suddenly turns very dark.

"How bad?"

"She can communicate with Abyssals." Sam says.

"She's nothing like me, then." San Fran grunts.

"It's similar enough." The Admiral admonishes her. "Show her."

San Fran looks at you, and then back at the Admiral, a very reluctant look on her face. You could almost swear that she was... scared? She certainly did seem a lot more vulnerable in here than she ever appeared anywhere else.

"Sir-"

"That's an order, San Francisco." The Admiral says grimly.

San Fran sighs and slowly raises her shirt up. Underneath, you could see an ugly, black spiderweb of lines skittering out from a black mass of scar tissue just over her chest. Like some kind of rust or corrosion eating away at her.

"What the fuck?!" You gasp.

"What the-" Even Portland is caught by surprise.

"Happened six months ago." San Fran sighs as she downs half the bottle of whiskey. "Got rammed by one of the larger Abyssals during a battle, and it broke of a piece itself into my chest. Vita and Shen did the best they could. Got most of the Abyssal bits out, except for one."

She then points to the black tumor of scar tissue on her chest.

"There was one piece they didn't want to risk removing, since it was too close to my aorta. If it shifted even a few inches, I'd bleed out instantly. They decided to leave it in and... this happened."

"Jesus fuck..." You breath as you try to take it in. "And... were there any side effects?"

"Hurts like a motherfucker 24/7." San Fran grumbles and holds up the bottle. "Painkillers stopped working so I switched to this. Other than that, this shit does have its perks. Abyssals apparently think I'm one of them."

"W-what?" Both you and Portland are taken aback.

"Works kinda like some sort of camouflage." San Fran shrugs as she pulls her shirt back down. "The smaller ones are completely fooled, and as long as I don't get into line of sight of the larger and smarter ones, they don't raise a fuss."

"So, San Francisco, what's your opinion on all this?" The Admiral asks her. "What should Hoel do?"

San Fran looks at you, scanning you from head to toe.

"I hate to say it but... you might have to bring Vahlen in on this." San Fran sighs and puts a hand on her chest. "I don't like that bitch, but... she's the only reason this shit hasn't progressed as far as it could have been. "That would be very much appreciated." You sigh. "I... I don't want to be alone with her. At all."

"Understandable." The Admiral nods. "Captain, I'll leave things to you here. San Francisco, you're dismissed, and please try to moderate your drinking."

"No guarantees, sir." San Fran half heartedly salutes.

"I'm coming too, sir." Portland steps forward.

"So am I!" Sam says, finally happy at an excuse to do something other than read mail.

"Thank you, girls." The Admiral smiles. "Now lets go round up some volunteers.

---

It turns out that getting volunteers was much easier than expected. The Marines stationed on the base all were more than happy to repay you for helping out with the landing operation. Quickly enough, you pick up basically a platoon of Marines, who accompany you to the small secure section of the camp where the Science Division has set up. You also see that members from STRIKE-1 have also joined the escort, including Red.

Of course, the guards manning the checkpoint to the temporary lab facilities are on guard, but they know that even they couldn't say no to so many Marines in one place, in addition to the Admiral. The Admiral wordlessly waltzes through the checkpoint, you, Sam, and Portland following close by along with STRIKE-1 while the Marines wait outside, staring down the Science Division troops.

"You know, you could have just knocked." Vahlen sighs as she strides out of the one of the lab tents, an annoyed expression on her face.

"Well, the island hasn't been fully secured, so you can't be too careful." The Admiral says cheerfully.

"So what is this about? You're not about to kick me and my team off the island, are you?" Vahlen raises an eyebrow.

"It's about Hoel, actually." The Admiral motions to you. "It appears that she can communicate with Abyssals now. We need your expertise."

"Really?!" In a flash, Vahlen dashes past the Admiral and brings her face uncomfortably close to yours. "You mean, you've communicated DIRECTLY with them? An actual conversation?"

"Um..." You glance to the Admiral, who nods gently. "Yes."

"Unbelievable!" Vahlen gasps and waves frantically at her subordinates. "Everybody, everybody, stop what you're doing! Code One breakthrough!"

Almost instantly, you're whisked away to one of the tents, which appears to be some sort of medical facility, filled with all sorts of scanning equipment.

"Now, the first thing we must do is a full body scan." Vahlen says, still extremely excited as she points to what is essentially a gigantic horizontal tube. "Completely noninvasive, of course, if you'll permit us."

"That looks kinda sketchy." You frown.

"It's perfectly safe, I can guarantee you." Vahlen tries to assure you. "Machines like these are used on humans all the time with no negative effects!"

"All right, let's get this over with, then." You sigh.

"Just lie on the bed here, and stay perfectly still." Vahlen instructs as she pats the flat surface.

You somewhat reluctantly slip out of your shoes and lie down on the bed, noting how the steel surface felt cold to the touch. Vahlen then fiddles with some buttons and switches as the whole thing ominously hums to life.

"All right, the bed will now retract into the scanner so it can begin." Vahlen continues. "Please refrain from moving and stay as still as possible."

You don't even risk nodding as you lose sight of Vahlen, Portland, Sam, and the Admiral, you vision replaced only with the enclosed tube.

"Beginning the scanning process. Please stand by." Vahlen instructs as the humming gets louder. Your body tingles all over and your head feels like its about to split open for one brief second. However, it's over as fast as it starts, and soon enough the bed comes sliding out.

"I guess that wasn't so bad." You mumble as you sit upright, but nobody answers.

Everybody's eyes are instead glued to the video screen. Even Vahlen is caught flat footed, her eyes looking as if they're about to come out of her head. You turn to see what's the big deal, and then you see it too.

There on the screen is a picture of a brain. YOUR brain, and in the center, you see lines. Black lines. Little black lines spiderwebbing throughout your brain, just like San Francisco's wound.

"W-w-w-w-what the FUCK IS THAT?!" You stammer as you nearly fall off the bed. Fortunately, Sam and Portland are quick witted enough to grab you before you can make any more unexpected movements.

"Interesting..." Vahlen exhales as she walks up to the screen, running her hand along the surface of the display. "This color, this pattern. Almost identical to San Francisco's..."

"Doctor, what are we looking at here?" The Admiral mutters.

"I think you should already know the answer to that." Vahlen tuts. "Abyssal infection. If I had to guess, when the Wo rig we recovered attacked Hoel, a piece of it was somehow inserted into her skull..."

"And it's just been in there this whole time?!" Portland gasps.

"To put it simply, yes." Vahlen nods. "And it looks like it's been growing, spreading. I believe this is how you've been able to initiate communications with the Abyssals."

"Seriously?!" Sam bites her lip.

"The research potential for this would be amazing..." Vahlen whispers to herself.

"So... how can we use this?" You ask.

"Oh? An interesting response." A grin begins to crawl along Vahlen's face. "Normally, the first reaction upon people finding out there's something in their brains is to ask for it to be removed."

"Well, uh, I figure, we're at war and all, and this helped me during the battle. I... I want to do good with it. Help us win with it." You say, remembering the difference it made with the Midway Princess.

"Hmmmm, a noble motivation to be sure." Vahlen grins and then realizes the Admiral, Sam, and Portland are glaring at her. "But in the interest of full disclosure, I do have to warn you that the infection is steadily advancing. While this theoretically improve your capability to communicate with Abyssals, we honestly haven no idea what will happen the infection worsens. In addition, thanks to use catching this so early, it can still be removed without any permanent effects on you. However, if it were to remain, the chances of successfully extracting the infection without killing you or inflicting permanent damage begin to drop. I hope you understand the implications of this."

"Don't do it, Hoel." Sam tugs at your arm. "You saw what that shit did to San Fran! I... I don't want to see the same happen to you!"

"I agree." Portland pushes up her glasses. "I don't like the idea of appropriating the enemy's methods without proper testing or safety protocols."

The Admiral remains silent, looking at you and then Vahlen.

"I can't order you to do either." He sighs. "This is a choice you must make on your own."

"Get it out of me, doc." You whisper. Already, you can feel that shit creeping and crawling in your head. You can't stop thinking about it now. That gnarled, corroded glob of gunk that used to be San Francisco's heart... that, THAT SHIT was INSIDE YOUR HEAD.

The Admiral nods and turns to Vahlen before you have a chance to have second thoughts.

"You heard her, Vahlen. Get it out of her."

"I'll need Vita's services, and a medevac flight back to Pearl Harbor." Vahlen says. "I can't do an operation of that caliber with the equipment on hand here."

"Done." The Admiral nods. "STRIKE-1 will be accompanying you. No negotiation."

"Understood, Admiral." Vahlen concedes. She's already going to get a cool little Abyssal brain tumor to toy around with, that was more than enough for her.

"Sir." Sam stands in front of the Admiral. "I'm formally requesting to accompany her."

"Me too." Portland says, standing up.

The Admiral eyes you, as if gauging whether you wanted them to come with you or not.

You profusely thank them all for taking the time to accompany you out here, and dismiss them, letting go do whatever they were supposed to be doing.

You manage to catch the rest of the task force as they're just exiting the repair docks as scheduled in order to rotate in the next batch of damaged and fatigued shipgirls. They all smile and greet you as you approach.

The medevac probably won't have the right networking for midair, but we should be able to set up a procedure livestream.

"Ah, well, turns out I that battle knocked some stuff loose in my head." You chuckle as you rap your knuckles lightly against your skull. "So, just to be safe, the Admiral is having me sent back to Pearl to have it checked out!"

"Oh, well that's just awful!" Ontario gasps. "Are you going to be okay?"

"Yeah, it sounds serious!" Heerman frowns.

"It's nothing, it's nothing!" You try to assure them.

"Noooooo! Don't leave, Hoel! You were so awesome!" The Luce, Wren and Daly wail as they try to swarm you.

"She's only being sent back a little ahead of us." Portland says coolly as she intercepts the three rambunctious destroyers by nabbing them by the collar. Looks like she learned a thing or two from Ontario. "You'll see her soon."

"Well, good luck then, Hoel." San Diego smiles. "Have a safe journey."

"Don't have too much fun without us." White Plains remarks.

Sam tugs at your sleeve as she points at the watch on her phone. Fuck! Did that much time pass already!?

"Oh shit! Gotta go! I'll see ya all soon!" You wave as Sam quickly tugs you away to the temporary airstrip. It was less an airstrip, and just a stretch of beach where all of the debris and bodies had been cleared off of. Thankfully, it was long enough to accommodate C-130s, of which there was one getting ready to take off, its props already spinning up.

The loadmaster at the rear ramp sees the two of you sprinting for the plane and waves for you two to hurry. Both you and Sam manage to get in right as the ramp starts to close. Inside, you see Vahlen already strapped in, along with STRIKE-1, all fully geared and armed. You and Sam both quickly get buckled in as the C-130 takes off and begins the long flight back to Hawaii.

You unbuckle your safety belt and make your way over to where STRIKE-1 is seated. Most of the squad are busy with their own ways to cope with the time. Reading books, playing cards, or whipping out little portable DVD players. Red and Section though, don't seem to be doing all that much and you decide to sit next to them.

"Hey Red, Section." You say to them. "How are things?"

"Heh, we're doing great!" Red gives you a thumbs up. "Awesome job out there at Midway, though! Storming the beach like that? Awesome!"

"Reckless, but it paid off." Section nods in agreement.

"So what were you guys doing during the battle?" You ask. "I don't recall seeing you guys anywhere."

"We were performing combat support operations for Midway's battlegroup out west." Section says simply.

"What he means to say," Red chuckles, "Is that we were jetting around in RHIBs like a makeshift ambulance, riding right into the middle of battles to pull out damaged shipgirls and getting the fuck outta dodge."

"We provided some fire support too." Section said defensively.

"I'm sure the Abyssals were quaking in fear from our mounted .50s." Red chuckled.

"Well, you guys do what you can." You grin. "It's real appreciated."

"Yeah, I just wish that we managed to get that fucking Geofons." Red sighed. "Midway seemed to be onto something, but she couldn't nail it down when the battle ended."

"Do you guys know anything more about Geofons?" You ask. "Like, what makes her more dangerous than a Wo?"

"Well, first of all, Geofons can carry faaaaaaar more planes than a normal Wo." Red states. "We think maybe at least three or four times as many planes, and they are AGGRESSIVE AS FUCK."

"And it seems that Geofons can also 'absorb' the planes of other Abyssal carriers." Section continues. "That's what really makes it more dangerous than other carriers. It can carry over its benefits to other Abyssal fighters. So what we were seeing was what was apparently multiple Wos 'feeding' their planes to Geofons, who kept sending them in relentless waves. It took everything Midway's group had to just hold them off. We had no time or resources to really range out and scout for Geofons."

"But at least you got Tanager!" Red gives you the thumbs up. "That's one less super Abyssal out there!"

Rather late, but can't believe I almost forgot she technically had other sisters...

I've a feeling that when we get out of surgery, we'll be in need of an upgrade.

"Well, I get the feeling they won't be the last of those types we'll see." You frown.

"Yeah, can't be that easy, huh?" Red sighs as she leans back in her seat. "And I'm pretty sure Geofons is gonna come back more pissed than ever with Tanager taken out."

"Too true." Section nods. "We haven't even begun to see what the Abyssals have been hiding in the deep or the dark zones."

You engage with some more small talk with Red and Section for a little while more, but the long plane ride combined with exhaustion from the recent battle meant sleep came swift and sudden...

---

"Are you ready, Hoel?" Vahlen asks, her face covered by a surgical mask. Right behind her was Vita, her Rig deployed as various small, robotic arms protruded out, all of them holding various surgical instruments, much to your dismay.

"I'm ready." You nod as you glance at the restraints on your arms and legs. "Are these really necessary?"

"Just a precaution." Vahlen says simply as she motions to the members of STRIKE-1 standing guard. "As are they."

"I'm trusting you with no funny business." You scowl at Vahlen.

"I have just as much incentive as you to have this growth safely removed from your body." Vahlen says simply.

"And I, for one, won't accept anything less than perfection in a medical operation." Vita proclaims as she snaps on her surgical gloves and dips her Rig's sub-arms into alcohol. "You won't die on the table under my watch."

"I'm trusting you all." You grimace as Vita places the anesthesia mask over your mouth. You eyelids flutter as the slide closed...

"The operation was a success?"

"Beyond our wildest dreams."

"Does this mean the Project can move forward to the next stage?"

"Sir, with all of the raw material we gathered from the battle, combined with this goldmine, I think we can go straight to the final stage."

"Are you sure of this?"

"Positively. Hoel has proven much more useful to us than I thought..."

Sounds more like either Vahlen's going to be the one getting upgrades, or we're getting a half-abyssal clone sister.
