Well, this is it lads, another quest thread. With Warcraft. the lads over at the RPG discussion center had a few novel ideas about setting the game around the end of the second war or before the third war revolving around the bastard child of the Alliance: Alterac. In this story we take the role of a poor cleric who has been forced into the role of being a patsy while his kingdom is dismantled(tm). Will he make alterac Rise again? Will he die

>You are Anlec Falconcrest. Third son of Baron Falconcrest and far removed from the succession line of you spent an idyllic time in the valleys of alterac before being sent away from home, serving as a lay brother in the brotherhood of the horse in Stormwind.
>you were there when the kingdom of stormwind was tormented by the green skinned demons from the dark portal and witnessed stunning acts of brutality and bravery. All that was for naught as the wizard Medivh betrayed his race.
>You were part of the strike force that entered the tower of Karhazan to slay the mage and were among the last to leave the shores of Stormwind as the city burned.

>Now that long war is finally over. The Expedition has left for the orcish homeworld and has sealed the portal from the other side. There will be no way back for them. They are doomed to death or worse, but their memories shall live on forever.
>You were prevented from joining the expedition and seeing the war to it's end. Treachery most foul has been committed by your countrymen and their fate - and yours- lies in the balance. Baron Perenolde has absconded and several noble houses have either followed him or have been exiled. Only your stellar conduct throughout the war has kept from being dispossessed.
>>
>>46778732
>you have been granted the lordship of the ancient town of Strombrad. Situated at center of the kingdom between the fork that divides the northern and southern mountain passes, and sitting between the Capital and the farmland on the shores of Lake Lordemere, it has always been an important part of the roadways in Alterac. The merchants were well to do and brought the traders brought coin in to the ancient hillfort guarding the town.
>Now however the fort is a blackened ruin that is being covered up by snow and there is hardly any trade to speak of. Despite what Uther the Lightbringer might say, the Kingdom of Alterac is now in ashes.
> True, you never spent too much time here. The fondest memories of the place that you have are those of the apples you loved picking from the orchards of your Lord Father's manor. Now he and your eldest brother are dead and your second brother is absconding, being hunted as criminals and traitors by the alliance at large.
>Yet at the end of the day, you always will remain a son of alterac. You never forgot it during your time as a knight of Stormwind, and they never let you forget it after the betrayal of Alterac.
>It falls to you to pick up the pieces. Even now the vultures circle overhead the dying eagle of your nation. You have heard the rumblings. King Thoras Trollbane wants the the kingdom dismantled, and subsumed into Stromgarde and Lordaeron. King Genn Greymane wants to nominate his ward Isiden Perenolde as the king of Alterac and the kingdom filled with Gilnean patsies. Can you fight the dire forces assailed against you? Can you make the Eagle of your forefathers rise again?

And with that rather lengthy intro, lets get down to the nuts and bolts.
>>
>>46779315
so I guess the trick will be to restore the place to prosperity while convincing Arathor and those Perenolde upstarts that each other is bigger threat than we are...?
I mean war is over, Orcs have been neutralized, peace has returned. What's the worst that could happen?
>>
>>46779315
So for the basic holdings, I will be using the ASOIAF custom house holding thing. Alterac is modeled on the Mountains of the moon because they serve a similar geographical hurdle and a roughly similiar political structure. Instead of the mountain clans stirring shit up, we will have orc stragglers, ogre holdouts and the angry nobility and the retainers stirring shit up and harassing our smallfolk.

>Defense: 30 - Mediocre with great natural terrain but nearly no fortifications
Alterac has always been a defensible location. It is what allowed the Eagle to fly above the mountains when your land was surrounded by the more powerful lordaeron, Stromgarde and the City state of Dalaran. However, the betrayal has met with swift reprisal. The castles and towers are now in ruins or garrisoned by Stromgarde or Lordaeronian soldiers and they are not sympathetic to your cause. Once the land is deemed pacified they will surely draw down and return home. Until then, you are not allowed to build anything more than low stone walls to protect your people.

>Lands: 10 - A speck of Land, no larger than a single town.
You have been granted the town of Strombrad- or as it is now being called - Strahnbrad as a reward for services rendered. While you feel you could have been given more important holdings, the towns' relatively important position on the Alteraci Royal Road holds the seed of power if you can use it.

>>46779632
there is a surprisingly large amount of stuff lurking in the background that we have to deal with since Alterac is collapsing in upon itself.
>>
>>46779831
What sort of geography are we using? Because going by the MMO maps Strahnbrad is a place through which literally any traffic between Stratholme area and southern kingdoms will have to go through. Lordaeron might prefer to go around the coast rather than through the mountains, but otherwise it seems like Strahnbrad should get a lot of merchants going and coming.

We're on the wrong side of the mountain to be conveniently polishing staves of dalaran wizards for favours, though...
>>
at any rate, gotta go sleep. Perhaps someone else will take interest in your quest OP. Good luck to you.
>>
>>46779831
>Influence: 5 A powerful minor house with colorful history.
Despite the handicaps the Alliance has put you in, you still remain popular among your people. Most of the smallfolk were rightfully terrified of the greenskin horde and wanted to save their families. The politicking of Aiden Perenolde and the council of nobles ended up with them being declared renegades and their countrymen as little better than the orcs. As a result they have had to stick together. At times like these, your influence as a comrade in arms to Anduin Lothar, fighting at his side against the green tide has been a clarion call to the people of Strombrad. This camaraderie has not gone unnoticed by the Alliance high command, and you have been granted influence beyond what your holdings might suggest at a cursory glance. You might be able to leverage this influence and the bickering of the kings of the Alliance to strike out a new path and make sure that alterac remains free.

>Law: 40 - A great deal of control over your lands and crime is uncommon.
Martial law has been imposed on Alterac, and the large presence of soldiers of the alliance has rendered crime uncommon. This is a good thing, but once the soldiers return home, the lands will troubled like never before.

>>46780056
I was planning on consolidating the hold on strahnbrad and slowly securing the roads into and out of alterac to grow rich off the alliance trade. At the same time people want Alterac gone and us with it.
>>46780083
somehow I doubt it.
>>
>>46780056
A good place to fortify and rebuild from.
>>
>>46780148
>population: typical population with farmers surrounding your main town.
The lands surrounding strombrad have been left relatively untouched. King Trollbane doesn't want 'his lands' to get ruined. Either way, it has allowed you to keep a stable population for now, but a failed harvest, or too many people crowding Strombrad too soon will upset the delicate balance. Stormwind is being rebuilt and if you don't corral your people in, they might leave for greener pastures across the thandol span.
>wealth: Poor
The war has not been kind to your people. traitors to the rest of the alliance, your ancient house has been plundered and much of it's wealth carried off. While you live in strombrad, you have to make do with living in the mayor's manse. The poor man lives with his wife and daughters in the town hall. Another family crushed underneath by war.
>>
If I remember right the Tides of War book had a few higher ups in the Alterac Army say "Fuck Perinolde" and join Thoras Trollbane in fucking up the Horde in mountain passes, sadly I have forgotten their names. Do you want me to dig them up?)
>>
Anlec's sheet

Well those are the traits of Anlec.

it was basically old general Hath. I plan on something nasty to happen to him once the alliance leaves and the syndicate tries to grab power.
>>
>>46781018
>it was basically old general Hath. I plan on something nasty to happen to him once the alliance leaves and the syndicate tries to grab power.
Well that's stupidly forced.

I'd play in a quest about the Deeprun Tram if I wanted to get Railroaded.
>>
>>46781078
of course you can rescue him. From the syndicate's point of view, Hath sold them out to the alliance.
>>
>>46781135
Remember the Syndicate are (Officially)run by Perinolde's son who actually DISAGREED with his father.

yes, and gilneas wanted another perenolde on the throne.

Anyway.
Anlec has

4/5 fighting

fine.

You wake up, and wash your face in the basin of cold water. A lord of alterac, a Falconcrest should be waited on by a small army of squires and stewards, but for now you must do so yourself. At least there are no brothers to laugh at your dire straits or your father and brothers to judge you dressing yourself. As you step out, you hear the crier proclaim lord Uther's Decree again. Alterac is beaten and her lords are traitors to the alliance. They are traitors and need to be arrested. Any man who does so is to be given a thousand golden coins.
A princely sum, and proof that the alliance is desperate to find the traitors.
You think back to your duties as you walk to the town hall. You and the mayor have much work to do. what shall you discuss first?

>the food issues that might arise.
>the sorry state of your forces and how to improve them

Mayor Garth Ryson is a middle aged man, but looks impressive with his long locks of hair. Some of his feral beauty has passed on to his daughters, and you wish that you could chase them like you would have a long time ago. You have a lot on your plate.
A lot of it has to do with what your people will not have any on theirs. Andorhal is on the verge of rioting with the institution of the internment tax, and as a result King Terenas has clamped down on it. With that goes the major part of the grain you were dependent on for feeding your people while they prepared the fields for the harvest.

"So, we are hanging on by a thread then?" Garth asks you, his face in a strange mixture between a snarl and a sneer. You nod. A succinct way to put the matter. If the supplies are disrupted for a longer period of time, Strahnbrad will starve while the crops ripen. There are a few things you could do to alleviate your food issues.

>secure supplies by force (desperate option)
>try trading with southshore and tarren mill for food in exchange for favorable exchange rates. you lose money but keep the food for a season. You have to spend time negotiating with the local leaders.
>do nothing and wait for the thing to blow over. Lordaeron can handle it. you must move on to other matters.
>>
>>46786109
>try trading with southshore and tarren mill for food in exchange for favorable exchange rates. you lose money but keep the food for a season. You have to spend time negotiating with the local leaders.

Once people have their stomachs full they will be less likely to throw riots like in Anderhall. Otherwise we're going to get stabbed in the back by a starving peasent.
>>

>try trading with southshore and tarren mill for food in exchange for favorable exchange rates. you lose money but keep the food for a season. You have to spend time negotiating with the local leaders.

See, we're already on thin ice with EVERYONE, so going out and taking food by force isn't a great plan. Neither is waiting for the outside world to handle it.

This way we build up a healthy relationship with our neighbors and solve our current problem!
>>
>>46786109
>Trade for food!
Man all this talk about food has me hungry now...
>>
>>46786316
>>46786191
Is it mroe economical to have a rookie frost mage simply help keep natural ice cold or is just straight up conjuring frost the better option?

Because Alterac has a lot of ice, and getting fresh oceanic fish to other places without spoiling could be worthwhile to both Alterac and Southshore.
>>
>>46786359
I feel like the nature of ice magic would make it easier to keep the natural ice chilled, where as the conjuring is manifesting the ice yourself either from the arcane magic that makes it or by summoning the stuff from the plane that it exists on.
>>
>>46786431
You're still "Absorbing heat" one way or another. I don't really want to get too far into magical thermodynamics, but a way to get fish that isn't salted, or via an expensive portal could help.
>>
>>46786477
True, but then you would wind up having to pay for more expensive measures to make the shipments even work. I mean I imagine that the portals work on a basis of how ever long the mage is holding it open rather than each item that goes through is taking energy to transport. Otherwise whenever Jaina does a mass teleport it would wind up causing a fat chick to get emancipated.
>>
>>46786109
Ryson looks at you with a mixture of disgust and admiration as you tell him what you are about to do. The plan is simple. You renegotiate the tolls between the merchants in southshore into a more favorable bargain for them, and in return they petition the mayor to sell you emergency stocks from tarren mill. The stocks there would feed the entire orcish horde for a year, and the grain will rot soon. Being cut by both ends of the blade will be painful but at least the people will not go hungry.
Ryson agrees begrudgingly. You have to set out soon, but before you do you can still take another decision. Maybe you can retrain the militia to a fighting shape. Your means don't allow you to have even a small army, but there are plenty of young men in the town that are now unemployed. They might turn to crime once the alliance leaves. Better to make them your criminals.

>create more jobs and promote trade. This increases the wealth of your holding and allows you to build fortifications sooner - once the alliance withdraws it's forces.
>ask garth to begin training the militia by establishing the headcount. You don't want your holdings to fall into lawlessness like the rest of alterac once the alliance leaves.

We don't really know much about portals other than the fact they were not super efficient.

Also they used to cost like at least a gold a pop and that wasn't cheap back in Vanilla.
>>
>>46786636
>create more jobs and promote trade. This increases the wealth of your holding and allows you to build fortifications sooner - once the alliance withdraws it's forces.
We shall become the obama of the kingdom, bringing Change and new jobs to the war torn kingdom!
>>
>>46786636
A tough choice.

On one hand, the prosperity of our people.

On the other hand, a way to ward of the vultures circling overhead.

>jobs and trade
>>
>>46786636
"Create Jobs and trade" seems like a bit of a vague proposition I hope it's not as easy as choosing that option.

(Getting Saints Row IV "Cure Cancer vs Solve World Hunger" vibes here to be honest)
>>
>>46786636
>>create more jobs and promote trade. This increases the wealth of your holding and allows you to build fortifications sooner - once the alliance withdraws it's forces.

Before you leave, you have a final task for Ryson. He was a soldier in the southern garrison before and his loyalty to the alliance is questionable at best. However he is an engineer and a good taskmaster. You order him to begin rationing food for the unemployed youth and promise them fair rations IF they help in expanding the holdings. Lord Uther has allowed you to build only a low stone wall, but hasn't specified the size of it. With an evening of creative book keeping and reinterpreting the town records of Strombrad, you suddenly have the labor and the resources to build the low stone wall. The work will keep the people well fed, and in time the work might lead to a few budding artisans who are good at building fortifications. The road south is to be improved as well. The alliance won't mind the improved roadways.

Satisfied at the general gist of the plan, you retire to rest. You have a long journey tomorrow.

>>46786826
well, once the alliance leaves you are going to be a rich and undefended town while the hungry eagles circle overhead.
>>
>>46786872
We'll deal with that issue once we come to it, for now we need to work on our macro and get our economy going before we can start to train troops and defenses you know?
>>
>>46786636
>create more jobs and promote trade. This increases the wealth of your holding and allows you to build fortifications sooner - once the alliance withdraws it's forces.
I'm assuming they are not about to leave right away and we have some time to catch up once we're better able to afford the additional security, since our own people are not the only potential troublemakers.
>>
>>46786872
I think it's just a bit too vague a choice. What WOULD we do to juice the economy?
>>
>>46786955
Just checked the Wikis. Apparently the only real mineral resource Alterac has is Iron.

So I guess long-term we could do some Iron mining?
>>
>>46786955

Well it seems we're building The Wall.
>>
>>46787002
Alterac is fantasy Switzerland, so while mining might be a nice bonus, I'm assuming our main plan is to be a waystation, trading hub and maybe setting up a bank for the flavour?
Not sure if we could get away with mercenary business considering our nation is not exactly trustworthy at this moment.
>>
>>46786872
The journey south is long, and before you leave you see Ryson institute your orders. There is some grumbling and you see some dark looks thrown your way, but no one will be foolish enough to attack a knight in broad daylight. Not unless there is total anarchy. If your gambit fails, that is what will probably happen. The latest news from andorhal is not encouraging. The granaries have been seized and the ringleaders arrested. However, it has only incensed the population even more. King Terenas is sitting on a tinderbox. You still fail to understand why the orcs are being interned instead of killed off? Have the leaders of the alliance forgotten what happened to the women and children of sunnydale and redridge? Are they playing politics with the bones of their dead?

The ride south is remarkably fast. This is not winter, and the passes aren't dangerous. You follow the mailing caravan and pass through the crossroad towers, noting that the eagle of alterac flying on the lowest pole, well below the stromgarde eagle.

The merchants of Southshore are amenable to your proposition. However, you need to hammer out the details. Now would be a good time to remind the good people of southshore that you
are a war hero.

After hours of haranguing with the merchants, they finally agree that General Hath is an honorable man, and that since he was not a bad man, maybe alteraci civilians can have the superfluous grain that tarren mill has. Alteraci are better than the orcs after all, - barely.
The price you have to pay is stiff. A merchant that has the seal of southshore has to pay no tolls for passage down the Alteraci royal road for as long as the contract lasts. They can rescind it at any time they wish, but you have to follow it for the entire year.
It is a bitter draught to swallow, but you do it. Once the eagle flies once more, you will make these wretches pay. Your business done, you see to it that the food caravans are loaded and are ready to accompany the mail caravan. However, you must make all due haste. You have secured the food supplies and made sure that your people will have full bellies, even though it is with food meant for the greenskins.

You ride throughout the night, passing by lordaeronian and Stromgarde checkpoints, your armor and sigil being reason enough to let them through. However as the night darkens, you see a torch in the distance, seemingly beckoning you.

They probably also have Bloodstone like the Arathi Highlands.

>don't investigate.

As curious as the lights may be, you do remember that the war has created many fugitives, and desperate people. They will probably kill you and loot your corpse. You continue onward, and are greeted by the sight of a freshly built earthen rampart being dug in by teams of men in as the dawn is breaking over alterac mountains. The workers, taskmasters and outlander guards alike look as the colors of the mountain change, from an inky black to a violet, then sliding into a pink before the sun rises over the mountains. It is a beautiful sight. As the sun rises over the mountains, you hear the hunting cry of an eagle.

Shaking yourself from your reverie you pass on into the town. The grain caravan will be coming tomorrow and you want to make sure that the men are being fed properly. You have had to forgo a lot of money to feed these men, and you want to make sure that by the time fall begins the town has the walls ready and the the roads secured.
>>
>>46787465
Do we learn later what the torch was, or will you tell us? Always curious about the roads not traveled.
>>
>>46787465
The weeks pass quickly. The wall is built around the outer perimeter of the town, and you are able to persuade the Garrison commander that you are just rebuilding your town wall after the war.
The road rebuilding project has brought a measure of prosperity to your people. The fact that the roads are patrolled by Stromgarde soldiers keeps the malcontents at bay and as the days turn shorter, trade booms. It is a small consolation to you as a large proportion of the trade caravans bear the seals of Southshore. The mayor seems to hand them out like mages hand out fireballs. Ryson is nearly as angry as we are but he is handling most of the rebuilding project.
This has been a good thing for you. A cadre of workers has shown remarkable promise in laying out the roads. Former engineers in the Alteraci army, they went into hiding while the Alteraci army was dismantled. They are an important resource for rebuilding your forces, but the better quality roads that they make makes the caravans go by faster.
Speed is of the utmost importance as you hear that fresh rioting has broken out over other parts of Lordaeron and in the Gilnean villages of ambermill and pyrewood. What do you do with your cadre of former engineers.
>keep them building roads. Infrastructure will rapidly be improved, helping trade but also the alliance forces as they can deploy rapidly throughout alterac.

>keep them building roads. Infrastructure will rapidly be improved, helping trade but also the alliance forces as they can deploy rapidly throughout alterac.
Can't we sort of combine the two though? They can be at work (and paid for) building infrastructures while being recognized as military unit of engineers.
Although I suppose giving them that distinction will not be well received by other nations, and adding military drills on the side to their schedule will slow them down as it diverts their time and effort away from doing the actual work.

One nation's loss is another nation's gain. The Alliance is slowly but steadily becoming dependent upon your road network. The unrest in the different parts of Lordaeron needs to be policed constantly. Soldiers and sometimes drafted militia pass by Strahnbrad every day, their passage eased by the wide roads that your engineers are making. You have decided - much to the chagrin of Ryson- to split up your engineers to spread them evenly over the work gangs that are maintaining the roads. He had been making sure that the engineers work together to keep their unit cohesion. However you cannot risk them being captured by the alliance convoys and patrols. Split up they can relay their expertise to the work gangs expanding and maintaining the roadways, thus building better roads. This way you can keep alteraci lives safe while stromgarde soldiers keep the peace and the soldiers of Lordaeron pay you money for using the taverns and whorehouses of your town. Business is definitely booming in Strahnbrad.

As you settle down to another day at the office, you see two two pages, one dressed in the livery of the Menethils, and the other - an elf- dressed in the livery of the Council of dalaran enter and demand an audience with you. Your day is busy and you can only lend your ears to one emissary today.

Terenas Menethil can wait. You tell the emissary from Lordaeron that you are indisposed at the present with matters of state, taking note of the man's sneer at those words. He will have his audience, this wispy mustached man, but not before the elf.

The last you had seen the elves was during the conflict that is now being called by the scholarly as the second war. For you the war never ended. You came back home to find it in ruins, and even now you are still in a melee, a dying eagle trying to keep the vultures away.
You are stopped in your brooding as the elf bows before you. She is attractive in a way the most pampered of noble ladies will never be able to match. Her eyes ears, and shape give her an exotic air. After spending a bit too much time staring at her, you nod at her, before filling two mugs with some alterac brandy. You invite her to sit opposite you and hear her message. You listen to her speak about how much she has heard of your bravery and tactical acumen on the field of battle and nearly pass out from the liquor. If this wench is not going to get to the point you might as well send her away.
"Lord Krasus would ask a favor from you, valiant knight."
And there it is, the marrow of the argument. You nod at her and let her continue. The Alliance is going to decide the future of Alterac. They have all but decided to let alterac fall in the domain of a certain Daval Prestor, a noble from Northeron who is a distant relation to Aiden Perenolde. This is news to you. You start up and she continues. Dalaran has been left out of the loop and the council of six is most displeased with the conduct of king Terenas. They want to see for themselves what kind of person this Daval Prestor is, and they want you to be their eyes. Or rather, you to be their eye sockets. The young elf is to travel with you as part of her apprenticeship as a mage, and act as the eyes of the council.

Prestor, eh? What sort of rectal alteracism had that guy have to commit to get this appointment? In any case it seems our interest is aligned with the wizards' for now.

You see no reason to upset such puissant neighbors, and besides in the good graces among the council is a boon that you can leverage. It seems interesting that Dalaran would be left out of deciding Alterac's future, but so have you. The fact that they are willing to whore out your land to the first charming two bit lordaeroni noble with a drop of eagle in his blood is an insult to both you and the land. You resolve to do your utmost to make the man's bid for kingship fall. You agree to the mage's demands and offer her a room in the nearest inn. She politely declines before telling you that she will be in your party when the king summons you, before leaving.
That being done you see the alliance emissary. A man, about your age named Othmar Garithos is the emissary. You had heard about the baron garithos' family perishing during the orcish assault on Quel'Thalas. At least the man had risen in the ranks, being sent on errands from the king himself. The king demands your presence when the fate of Alterac is decided. Whatever else the man might be, he is not a diplomat. You nod curtly and the man leaves, leaving the summons on the table.
You crack your knuckles as you read the letter with the stylized L seal on top. It is an invitation, addressed to you and written in a neat handwriting, requesting your presence as a member of Alterac at a momentous moment for the alliance. You finish reading the letter, watching the stylized signature before sighing and calling for Ryson. You don't have much of an entourage of hanger's on. Your half feral steward and his family will have to suffice. Them and the elf. Whatever this Krasus might do, the bugger must make it worth your while.
and that's it for now.

Does being a cleric mean we can heal and cure people with magic?
Or do we have potential to, with training?

Or is our affiliation with the church only formal and we served as a "mundane", i.e. as officer or medic?

The journey to the capital city is one that you are ready to make. It will take around a week if you follow the mail coaches to the capital city. The alteraci leg of the journey goes smoothly. The roads that your military engineers have built are in excellent condition, and the royal road is built better than ever. It follows a straight path through the flatter parts of the mountains and through several tunnels that drastically reduce the travel time. Maintaining these tunnels will take some coin but the rewards are rather good. The problems arise during the Lordaeronian stage of the journey. You have to pass through Andorhal and then into the hinterlands of the capital city. The prosperous town is on the verge of open rebellion and Terenas is clamping down hard on it. Harvest time is approaching soon and if the farmhands lose their pay to this tax, they will riot. The soldiers stationed here reflect this, and more than once stones and dead animals are thrown at your carriage as they see the alteraci banners fly over it. They don't love you or yours so much.
As you near the capital city and stop at the inn named Gallows End in the town of Brill for the night, the people are treated to a small magical display. An elf mage, with light blonde hair appears out of thin air into the crowded inn. She wears the colors of quel'thalas and Alterac, and bows to you. You stare a bit at her before you realize that this is the same page that delivered you a message earlier. You nod and invite her to sit with your companions, with the Ryson family looking a bit nonplussed.
You introduce her to your companions, hailing her as an old friend from the war who is here to accompany you as an ambassador from quel'thalas to Alterac.

The entrance to the capital city is far more discreet than you expected. You wait for the mail coaches to stop at their headquarters and send Ryson to find lodgings. Something in your budget. There is no feasible way you can match the opulence of the Lordaeronian lords, Gilnean nobles and Kul Tirassian naval commanders being assembled. So you opt for discreetness.
The guards at the palace bar your way and you show them your invitation. They look at it in disbelief before sighing and letting you in. You notice that your sorceress companion in let in with a nod and a bow, something they haven't done for you. She prods you onward to the throne room, and therein you await in a chamber with merchants and regular citizens for audience with King Terenas if he graces to meet you.

You smile sadly as you watch your reflection in the mirror. You wear the alteraci eagle and by all means are an ambassador for your nation. Hungry peasants throw rotting cats at your carriage and you are forced to hide as travelers in poorer inns. Guards block your path and deem it to frisk you as a traitor after all you have done throughout the war.
Perhaps it would have been better to die on the field of battle alongside Anduin Lothar. At least that way, your personal honor would have remained untarnished. And yet here you are, brought forth like cattle to the slaughter, to watch as some northern ponce is given the realm of your forefathers.

You are brought out of your reverie as you see the merchants and citizens summoned to the king. At least you are alone here. Even as you thank the light for that small bit of solace, you notice that you are not alone. A golden haired boy has entered the room, wearing clothes of the finest cloth that make you look like a beggar. He seems to look at you with undisguised curiosity and seems like he wants to speak with you.

You might as well amuse yourself by talking with the boy. You beckon him over and say, " Hullo Lad, do you want an apple?" The boy looks at you for a moment before nodding. You are curious as to what he sounds like, and this seems like a fun way to pass the time. You say, "I cannot hear you lad, you have to speak up."

The boy says, "Yes, I would like an apple." Then takes a note of the armor you are wearing underneath your tabard before adding, "Sir." The boy's accent and diction is flawless. His father hasn't been skimping on tutors. You produce an apple from your backpack, one of the few pleasures you allow yourself now. Once the season begins in earnest, maybe you should start brewing and selling cider for that extra bit of money. Now that war is at an end, people will happily pay for luxury.

While you are contemplating, the boy takes the apple from your hand and takes a few bites. He nods as he finds the apple to his suit. You wait for the boy to finish and wait to see if he has any questions.

"That was a very good apple"

"It was, lad."

"Where are you from? Most apples that I eat are not as red as that one?"

"From Alterac, lad. You should come visit sometime. The apples there are the best in fall."

"My father wants to visit that place soon, he says that once it is sorted out, we can go there during the summer. He says the roads have gotten better."

A smart man, the lad's father. Alterac was in dire straits, and not the kind of place you would want a child to visit right now. You nod and produce another apple and give it to the boy. He takes it with a small bow. You take the last one for yourself and savor the taste. Alterac always had the best apples.

"So what do you know about Alterac lad?" You ask in between bites. The boy finishes chewing before looking at you.

"My father says that Alterac will be given to lord Daval Prestor, and then we can visit him in the mountains. My sister doesn't like him. And neither do I!"
>>
>>46794615
You wonder why the boy's tone became louder as he said the last two sentences. This would be interesting. He seemed to be wanting to say more but he stopped. Maybe you could persuade him to say more.

"I have only heard good things about Lord Prestor, lad. What is it that ails you? Did he laugh when you fell off your horse?"
The boy warms up to that casually thrown bait. He is impetuous.
"No, I am going to be the finest knight that ever existed. When I am done being taught by Uther, I will ride Invincible and be the noblest knight there was."

" A nice name for a horse, young man. But maybe Lord Prestor is a better rider than you? Is that why you don't like him?"

"Lord prestor never rides. My sister is to be betrothed to him once this council is over and our lands are to be joined together that way. My sister likes him not and she would never marry him if it were up to her. I will never marry anyone!"

"Does your sister have a name, little man?" You ask, suddenly curious as to how far this Prestor was reaching with his gambit. You are surprised at his answer as the boy regards you quizzically with with his puzzled blue eyes. He finally says, "My sister is the Princess Calia Menethil. I am the Prince of Lordaeron." No puffing of the chest, no proud proclamation. A simple and flat statement of fact.

You swallow the lump in your throat. The prince has been most informative. That explains a lot. King Terenas wants to bind Alterac closer to Lordaeron and this trumped up charlatan will do just that. He would pull the wool over the eyes of Alterac and annex it while spending money keeping orcish pets. He dares to tame the eagle. You clench your fist and prepare to stand up, all subtlety forgotten. Even as you do a shadow appears at the door. Standing before you is a grizzled man looking at you with undisguised contempt. Uther Lightbringer has come to summon you to the King.
>>
>>46794977
The court is filled with nobles and pages going about their business. Most of them stare at you with dark looks and a few who fought alongside you during the war nod and smile at you. They are few and far between. Most of the people you fought with are on the other side of the dark portal now.

The king looks at you expectantly as you bow and the herald starts saying something that you don't quite catch. You are told that the king expects your presence in the discussion about alterac, although it seems like a done deal. You were never raised to deal with the drudgery of court life and it exhausts you. You nod and and flourish and nod again until your head feels like it is ready to fall off. At the end of it, you are quite sore and want to yawn. As you are led away from the court, A hawkish looking man wearing the eagle of alterac as a clasp for his cloak beckons you into a private chamber.

If yes, might as well. But if we ended up dallying with some guy and made king wait for us... also where's our entourage? The sorceress might have some insights to give.

>>46795652
you decide to ignore that man and make your way outside the court. You are sick of this game of intrigue and backstabbing. The Dalaran mage might be interested to know about what you have found out. Keeping her masters happy will allow you to fend off the vultures overhead for a time. You desperately need allies to keep your independence. At the same time, your roadbuilding and coffers of wealth will attract the riff raff and bandits once the alliance finally leaves. Maybe a sympathetic archmage will be the trump card.

The king will summon you soon enough to play the part of the fool and escort this Daval Prestor character to Alterac, to be your new ruler. You don't doubt for a moment that after the new queen is with child, Prestor will disappear and the child will be fostered at the court of Lordaeron. Then King Terenas Menethil the second will watch as his son and grandchild unite alterac with lordaeron and the eagle will die out. You feel like spitting as you remember that.

You find the sorceress waiting in an alcove for you in the palace gardens. For the first time she seems happy to see you. You nod at her and tell her that you have some information and suspicions about Daval Prestor. She is interested initially but loses it quickly as you tell her the entirety of your information.

She seems like she is on the verge of rolling her eyes. After you are done, she smiles and nods in an infuriatingly patronizing manner. Has she figured this out on her own? She thanks you for the service to the Kirin tor. If your business with the mages is done, you expect compensation. You state as much to her, all subtlety thrown to the wind.

She looks at you quizzically before laughing. A beautiful sound that ill suits your ears now.

"Now my lord falconcrest, your work is not done yet. Engage with the man Daval Prestor and regale him with the tales of your land. After all, he is soon to be your king isn't he? I shall be returning with you to Alterac."

Crash and burn

>>46796019
The rest of the day passes by without much incident except when your 'entourage' joins you. Ryson nearly gets his head chopped off before you rescue him and his wife and daughters. As you wait in the assembly hall, your poor collection is dwarfed by the large number of retinues that the other leaders and lords of the alliance are bringing. Lords and ladies from all over the eastern kingdom wearing their finery are assembling. You look like a poor armored beggar in their midst but you notice that Ryson and his family standing tall and looking at the assembled nobles in the eye. Taking a cue from them you straighten you back and make ready to receive the King of lordaeron.
Suddenly you notice that the mage is standing beside you. She seems rather satisfied and you dying to find out why. She smiles at you and soon enough, the king appears.
Terenas Menethil seems like an aged old man and you notice that the guards are closing the gate to the assembly before leaving. What is going on here? He speaks

"My lords and ladies, a most terrible thing has happened. It would seem that Lord Daval Prestor's chateau has been burned to the ground. He and his servants have all but disappeared."

The murmurs are loud enough to sound like bees. Prestor had disappeared when he was THIS close to being the King of Alterac. Had he been killed or worse ensorcelled by some dark powers? Suddenly everything was making less sense. The water tight plan that you had come up with that explained everything has been punctured.

You see old King Greymane, looking smug. He is accompanied by a young man, scarcely out of his boyhood ears, surrounded by two men with eagle clasps on their robes. One of them had been beckoning you, of that you are sure.

Genn Greymane begins to speak about how the young man, his ward should rightfully inherit the throne of Alterac, and is cut off immediately by Thoras Trollbane shouting out that he will burn alterac to the ground instead.

Admiral Daelin Proudmoore is staring intently at the debate between the two. You recall that he was uneasy about the Gilnean ward gaining the throne of Alterac. They had spent months arguing before coming up with Daval Prestor as the candidate they all backed. Now he had disappeared and all their plans for Alterac. Thoras Trollbane was swearing blood by his ancient bloodline and how he should have ravaged Alterac instead of saving it. Ryson looks like he wants to make Trollbane spill some of that ancient blood. If the fool starts something up, there will be no turning back. Suddenly, Terenas speaks and the hall turns silent. He says that as the last remaining noble of Alterac, you should have a say in choosing who gets to be your king. The entire hall turns to look at you, giving you a wide berth. Suddenly you are all alone and see a battery of eyes staring at you, awaiting you to speak your piece. You are aware that your words suddenly carry a lot of weight.

>support Isiden Perenolde (gilnean ward)
>support Daval Prestor being the king (in absentia)
>support Trollbane
>support someone else entirely (write in)
>>
>>46796580
If we go with the Gilnean ward it might encourage Greymane to actually stay outside of his wall, that being said I don't know if the ward would listen to us or to his own. I feel it's risky.

I don't like Prestor as the long term plans so far seemed to be attempt to dissolve Alterac and wed them into Lorderon.

Then Trollbane just wants to subsum our kingdom into his own since their patch of dirt is damn near barren and doesn't have much in resources.

I would suggest someone else but I dont know of anyone that would be up to it unless we could go Uther route and see how that works or even more crazy put the Prince in charge as a test of how to be a king.

That being said I'd probably go with Isiden Pernolde, better to at least have our own country intact rather than be dissolved by outside forces.

>>
>>46796958
alright then

You begin to speak. You thank the assembled nobles for their attention and speak at length about the horrors that you witnessed in the first war. You have always been a good leader of men, and you notice your words having an effect on the less stouthearted lords and ladies.
You say that king Aiden Perenolde was a traitor, and he has been justly deposed. You praise the kings for their decisive action in the war and reminisce your comrades on the other side of the dark portal. Now you have their complete and utter attention. It is time to speak your piece.
You point to Isiden Perenolde, telling him that much like yourself, he was an extra son, unneeded on in the household and sent away to be fostered somewhere else away from his homeland. And yet fate had willed it that he return home and lead his people, much like you had to.
You finish your speech by looking at Thoras trollbane in the eyes as you say that you would rather be on the other side of the dark portal than in this room, but you play the hand you are dealt. You finish your speech by saying, "that is all my lords and ladies." You do not bow.

The crowd is silent, overawed by your speech. They have had low opinions of alteraci, seeing your people as little better than the orcs that they have consorted with. You completely bowl them over with your speech. They have heard the name of falconcrest and as far as they knew, Anlec Falconcrest had died during the battle of blackrock spire or the sack of stormwind. Seeing a ghost defend the legacy of his people is too much for them to bear.

The hall is called into recess and the people who walk out look at you a different man. Where you had seen brickbats and murderous glares, you now see some form of sympathy and respect. You have lost friend and comrade as much as the best of them, and being chastised by you has made them warmer to alterac. Or to you at any rate. Genn and Isiden Perenolde are the last to leave. Genn nods at you and Isiden smirks at you. The boy says, " A stirring speech Lord Falconcrest. Very oratorical. Almost brought a tear to my eye." And then the two leave.

They will vote for the other Perenolde and Isiden will deliver Alterac to Gilneas. At least the Rysons are happy. They want to see an eagle fly above Strahnbrad once more and to see a Perenolde in the capital city. Well, at least you have given them that.
What have you done?

You are the last person to leave. As you turn do do so, you see the hawkish man who had beckoned you earlier do so again. He is dressed like the Retinue of Isiden, but is not with them.
He is beckoning you to an alcove that is secluded.

Seeing as you have nothing better to do, you follow the mysterious man with the hawkish features. He pulls you in after him and closes the door. The two of you are now alone. He looks at you with a neutral expression on his face. You look at him expectantly, waiting for him to speak. He doesn't do that. Instead he hands you a sealed letter and points to it, all the while striking up a torch. You read the letter, noting that every sentence has been written by a different hand.
It urges you not to support the gilnean claim or the the stromgarde one, but rather to wait. Better things are coming, the letter promises. A way for the eagle to fly free of those who would seek to cage it. You finish reading the letter and chuckle darkly to yourself. It would have been better if you had listened to the man before. As you hand the letter back to him, the man burns the letter and points you to the door, asking you to exit.

New allies. A chance to free the eagle. All you have to do is stall for more time and make sure the alliance forces leave alterac. The day is not lost yet, perhaps.

The puppet will be busy ordering his realm and getting used to alterac. Once he is crowned, the Alliance will surely start to withdraw forces from the region. The military drawdown would be devastating unless you get your soldiers trained in time. You will be practically defenseless. Yet, all you have to do is spread the whispers that a certain lords want more chunks of alterac. Especially larger sections of the Royal Road that is fast becoming the major lifeblood of the Alliance. By crownind Isiden as the king, Alterac will be free, nominally at least and be capable of setting it's own taxes and tolls.

You remember that Daelin Proudmoore wanted Isiden far away from Alterac. Maybe they will be helpful in this endeavor. You can cut a deal with Proudmoore, and he keeps the Gilneans from overrunning your lands.

Yes, Proudmoore would be a helpful ally. As the assemblage starts to return, you make way towards the grand admiral. You are stopped by his imposing guards, and humbly request an audience with him. After a few moments, the Admiral grants you an audience. You bow to him, and he nods.

"An impassioned speech, lord Falconcrest. Very moving. You reminded us all of our bonds to the alliance, and the sacrifices we all made to win the war against the horde. A pity so few of your countrymen were part of that esteemed brotherhood."
You sigh. No matter what you do, you will always be seen as a falconcrest. An alteraci traitor who consorted with the horde to bring the alliance down. This was getting ludicrous. Aiden for better or worse tried protecting his own people at a time when the horde was unstoppable. If the orcs didn't have their power struggle, the alliance would have been stomped into the dust. The alliance had won because the horde had torn itself apart.
"Yes Admiral Proudmoore. We are all race traitors Admiral Proudmoore. We let the orcs bed our sisters and daughters Admiral Proudmoore. All because the alliance left us at the forefront of the fight while everyone licked their wounds after thandol span. What would you do in our place, mighty admiral. What honor would be worth the lives of our children. Does honor comfort you when you look over the impaled corpses of your wife and children? Does honor fill your belly as your father's farm burns. What else do you want me to say? I am here because I have a proposition for you."
The aging man is struck by the vehemence of your cursing. He had clearly put you in the role of bootlicker and was surprised that you had said what you did. You despise people like that. Talking about honor when all their possessions are safely far away from the fire.

You lay down the plan before the stunned admiral. You want alterac to be a free member of the Alliance. If Isiden doesn't play ball, he becomes a figurehead. You will make sure that Alterac is relatively free of Gilnean influence and that Daelin always has a voice in the council. The terms are not particularly flattering, but you have been cut far too many times to the bone.

Your offer is fair enough. The king will take months to control parts of the forest the gilneans expect their lumber from, and if you will extend that time frame by several months more. Alterac will need it in the years to come for rebuilding itself. Daelin Proudmoore doesn't need to know that. In exchange he is going to sell you arms and armor to re-establish your forces. It is exactly the kind of thing you needed to equip your militia.

He had initially taken a hit to his honor but you pushed the point deep to the hilt. You were tired of being hounded by every person from peasant to king looking down upon you. You ask him how many children he has, and then tell him the story of Brother Robute Saldean. A he became a brother of the horse, the same year as you, and perished trying to defend his farm stead. You had made sure his parents and their horse had escaped, but Robute didn't know that. As far as you knew, they returned to Stormwind after the war was over. You dare Daelin to tell them that their son died well, and with honor. That would be scant comfort for them. They would rather he live.

Your work done, you notice that several lords and ladies are staring at you. None dares look at you in the eyes. People love talking about sacrifice. All heroes are remembered and their sacrifices honored. And yet, those who are the hardest hit would rather someone else die instead of their loved ones.

Your trade agreement sealed, you await the decision of the alliance. A potential thorn in the crowning of Isiliden has been removed. Only trollbane remained and you preferred that he remain hostile. You leave with your 'entourage'. Your Dalaran mage joins you

As you leave the the the capital city, you are greeted by a strange sight. A powerfully built dwarfish couple is standing near the road to the capital city, along with a pair of gnomes.

You decide to greet the dwarfs. You could crave a distraction. And dwarfs are the kind of people you like. Your polite greeting changes into something of a curse and a whoop as you see who the dwarf is.
It is an old comrade from Thandol span, Gamil Gunmar. An excellent shot, and a better drinker. You run at him, and he nods to you gruffly. He is looking sober, for a change. You greet him in dwarvish, much to the surprise of the female. You take in the fact that the two of them are wearing matching rings. The crafty bastard was actually married!

"Ach, lad. I am surprised ta see ya here. I half expected ye to follow yer brothers beyond the dark portal."

"So did I, Gamil, so did I. They gave me a worse fate. They made me a lord."

Both of you burst out laughing at that. You realize for the first time the absurdity of your situation. No one would have expected you to be a lord. A thirdborn son, a life as a knight would have been your calling, before you brought some small plot of land in Stormwind and whelped out a half dozen children with some woman with an ample dowry and an ample bosom. You really wondered how cruel fate was to put you into this passing.

"So Gamil Gunmar, what brings you to Lordaeron? Did ironforge grow tired of your tall tales?"

"No lad. Muradin Bronzebeard wanted ta see me. I had just finished mah business with him when I spotted ye. Truth be told, I am looking for a new place to live with the missus."
You bow courteously to Gamil's wife who responds in kind.
"And pursue your mad inventions as well I suppose?"
That gets the rise you desire out of him.
"Ye will see boyo, when it is all done the Gunmar gun will change warfare on azeroth. Och, I already have a few prototypes ready, if only king magni were interested in them."

You knew the idea behind the gun. A close range cannon that shot out bullets as fast as a small skirmishing force of dwarf riflemen at the same time.

"Say gamil, I wonder if you would be interested in working for me. I have got land aplenty and I need weapons to arm my militia with. I cannot pay you like king magni does, but I will look the other way while you tinker with your inventions."

Gamil's eyes lighten up as he you keep talking. When you are done, he claps you on the back before laughing.
"Ye turned out to be just the man I was looking for, lad. Mathie, gather the gnomes, we have a new home now."

The rest of the trip is uneventful. The mailing coaches are rather fast, and you spend your time chatting with the dwarf and learning about what happened to him after the second war. You are drowned in enough technobabble and tune it out. The elf from dalaran is as confused as you are listening to the dwarf ramble on about percussive locks and something else. Of your entourage, she is the most pleasant to look at by far, but you know that she cannot be trusted like you can trust Ryson or Gamil. You need to keep your secrets from her.

As the caravan stops outside strahnbrad, you get down and see the town developing. The harvest season is in full swing and soon, you will be able to start training your army during the winter. It might be a long road, but the eagle is finally rising.

You are awakened from your nap by a large explosion, one morning. Gamil is at it again. He has been given free reign to work with his explosives for the most part, and you have covered it up by telling the Stromgarde forces that he is researching gunpowder and seaforium mixes to make tunnels and roads more easily. Your people think this to be true as well. After all, the dwarves are masters of the powder and Ironforge is a fortress that is beyond the ken of humans. However, gamil has been ordered to hoard the stockpile for the most part and refine it, instead of blasting holes in the mountainside. Truth be told, you are awaiting for the weapon shipment from Kul Tiras so that you can uphold your end of the bargain.

The road network is done. The seeded military engineers have done a marvelous job. When a Dwarf couple says that the road is good enough for them, you know that it is engineering of the highest quality. Maintaining these roads during the winter will allow your men to travel to different parts of Alterac, and carry out messages among them. Just last week you convinced the loggers in the north to not fell trees, reminding them subtly that they would be used to fuel the enemies of Alterac. Patriotism is at an all time high now. Isiden plays the part of a gracious king well, and his gilneans wear the alteraci eagle clasps and fly the orange banner high. At times like this you can convince people to work for the good of the eagle with a few words and a few coins.
Even now, the word of your bandying with the court of Terenas has spread. The people now look somewhat less darkly at you, and you are pretty sure you are not going to be stabbed in the market by a disgruntled patriot.

Isiden has been helpful on one matter. He convinced king terenas that Alterac is too poor and will pay for the internments when the next summer starts. For now your people have nothing to do with the dreaded internment tax.
>>
>>46817440
Come next fall, all these people cheering at the king will be cursing him. Isiden is no Aiden Perenolde or Terenas Menethil. From your limited interaction with the boy - you are of the same age but have seen enough horrors to last you a lifetime - you have come to realize that he is Alteraci by blood, but Gilnean by lifestyle. He consults with a certain Vincent Godfrey, who you understand was his tutor. You have no problem with the mild mannered man, and indeed if you had met under better circumstances the two of you could have been friends. However, he is gilnean, and you remember that they hadn't done too much in the war. Even now, Gilneas threatens to leave the Alliance because of the internment act.

Should the alliance break, all your machinations will be for naught. General Hath is getting along in years, and sooner or later, he will retire. You have no army to speak of. You resolve to start training the militia. Yesterday, Gamil had come to you to show you his percussive action boomstick. The thing is exquisite and is incredibly accurate. A sharpshooter's weapon by any yardstick. However, making the weapon is incredibly time consuming.

>Ask gamil to switch to making regular dwarf weapons. They are weaker but will allow human blacksmiths to make them. More of your soldiers will be armed with guns when the time comes.
>Tell gamil to go ahead and keep making these new weapons. You will rely upon the pike wall that general Hath came up with.

You are in half a mind to tell gamil to start building the regular dwarf blunderbusses and stop messing around with his new toy when another small explosion startles you. You see the thing fire, ripping through the wood and stone as if it were not even there. The weapon takes a decent amount of time to reload but it is incredibly powerful. and incredibly accurate. A militia armed with these weapons would bring down a charge of Terenas' best knights. You have fought alongside the shining knights of Lordaeron before, and you know their worth on the field of battle. This weapon is a game changer.

Swiftly, you change your mind and clap Gamil on the back. You tell him to start cranking his new design of weapons, and tell him that money is no issue. Suddenly, the problem of the militia being next to useless is not as much of an issue any more.
Like all good leaders, you know better than to not trust militia. Their hearts are not the most stout, and their training is often lackluster. However, teaching the basics of firing a weapon like the Riflegun - the name that Gunmar calls it by- is relatively simple. You call for Ryson with all haste and make him see the contraption that Gunmar has rigged up. He is as impressed as you are. Clearly, this is a wonder weapon, capable of turning the tide against stromgarde.

You spend the rest of the day, watching the weapon being fired. The basis of a new plan forming in your mind. As another cadre of your spies comes along, you write a cryptic message to an old, honorable man. It only says. "The eagle Rises - A. F."

The messenger takes a horse and rides swiftly southwards, towards the capital city.

As you watch the rider disappear from view, you feel like you are in control of the situation. Alterac is growing stronger by the week, and the people that had migrated to stormwind are slowly but steadily coming back. You have received reports that stromgarde soldiers are beginning to stand down from their patrols. Their forces near alterac valley have stopped trying to secure it, and have been ordered to pull back to Thoradin's wall. The kingdom of stromgarde is far more warlike than Alterac, but they have been forced to rely increasingly on militia since the expedition went beyond the dark portal. Now, they are tired and the kingdom cannot support troop deployments. You even hear rumors that they might be abandoning their possessions on this side of the wall. It means that southshore, tarren mill and the cities will default to the kingdom of lordaeron. It has paid for the lion's share of the war and it would be just for them to gain these cities. It would also encircle Alterac completely. Perhaps the leaders of Dalaran would prefer that lordaeron not remain the hegemon of the alliance. You must talk to the 'diplomat' that has been part of your entourage.
As you return to your room, you notice a letter squarely in the middle of your chair. It has the alteraci seal on it, but instead of an orange, it is the color of blood.
>examine the letter.

Surely there won't be any bad news.
>>

You open the letter, and hear something heavy inside it. You watch a parchment tumble out and two rings, slick with a dark red liquid spill out. There is also a letter that is adressed to you

Anlec Falconcrest.

You are a traitor to Alterac. You abandon your homeland in it's hour of need and leave your father and brothers to be declared outlaws in their own land. You and traitors like your false king shall rule the day they whored our lands to the alliance.
Do you hear the wind? It is the sound of the eagle rising. It flies now on wings of blood. Our allies have given us much power and we shall dye our banners in the blood of traitors like you and Hath. And under those crimson banners, we and our allies shall make the eagle rise again, on wings of crimson. Behold our trinkets and hear our oath.

The true king of alterac
Aliden Perenolde

Your hands tremble as you see the rings. One of them is that of the field marshall of Alterac, and the other is the signet ring of General Hath, their gold tarnished with blood.
>>
Time for murder?
>>
>>46823508
you crumple the letter and let it fall to the ground, watching the rings lying on your desk. Old Hath, dead. One of the few people you could trust to do the right thing and rebuild the Alteraci army is dead.
All your plans seem to vanish in a puff of smoke. Some faction of nobles led by the eldest Perenolde is out to kill you, promising to drown Alterac in the blood of people like you. Alterac cannot withstand a civil war. Not at this time. Everything you have done since the last year seems incredibly fragile now. Isiden is a gilnean puppet, those people who threw their lot with the old nobility are gathering now, sending forth challenges to you in such a brazen manner. Someone has even infiltrated Strahnbrad. All this talk of mysterious allies that will drown alterac in blood is disturbing. What has Aliden gotten himself into?

You need allies, and you need them now.

>write a letter to the king of lordaeron, asking for the lightbringer's aid

It is time to call in some favors. Terenas need not know how weak Alterac is. Neither does Genn. They will seek to take advantage of your weakness and try to send a 'police force' Terenas will doubtless secure the iron mines and gold seams, and Genn will try and take the forests and orchards for securing his ships.

No, you must ask the mages of Dalaran for help. You agreed to be their eyes and ears during their intrigue session with daval prestor, and as far as you know, you upheld your end of the bargain. You don't want them to know the extent of your weakness, but they have been silent on the ongoings in alterac. You want them on your side. You respect their power, and a few mages on your side would be better if the rebels are consorting with dark powers.

The high elf answers your summons. You ask her to send a request to her master Krasus, asking an audience him. You know that dalaran is ruled by a council of six mages, whose identities are hidden. You don't know who they are, and you doubt that the emissary does either. Either way, you need their help now.

She agrees to tell her master what you told her. There might be a crisis afoot in Alterac that threatens to tear the nation apart. You request their aid, whether sword or spell. You have been faithful to the alliance and any help in this dark time will be appreciated.

She nods and asks to be left alone while she talks to her masters. She will have their answer tomorrow. She begs your leave and opens a portal. You can faintly see the outlines of dalaran, the violet spires shining in the moonlight. And then its gone. You are alone in your study and the sky is darkening. You crack your knuckles and leave the room and head to bed. You don't drink and bar the doors and windows, starting at any sound. The days ahead are going to get worse for you.
You have to start training the militia with Ryson soon, and warn him that there may be malcontents afoot.
>>
>>46825480
You spend the night restlessly, and come morning you feel terrible. The first thing you do is drink a pint of alterac brandy, making the dull pain in your head go away. It will be back soon but more brandy will keep that away.

Ryson is expecting you in the study. You bid him sit and tell him that his family is in danger. You tell him that that the rebels have gone underground and have assassinated general Hath. The kingdom's rearmament has taken a massive hit and that you will have to rely on militias to garrison the keeps.

By the time you are finished, you have drunk a few more pints of brandy and your head feels just fine. You swear you could take Aliden Perenolde right now and cut his traitorous head off and mount it on your charger. The last thing you remember is signing the order to reinstate the Strahnbrad militia and order it to move on to occupy the fortress at the crossings. It will be a good place for a training exercise and building unit cohesion and other military things. You realize that you are now completely and utterly smashed. The thought is funny to you and you laugh.

Your laughter brings Ryson's younger daughter to your study asking if you want something. You eye her again. She is rather beautiful in a provincial sort of way.and you have nothing better to do now. You remember her name. Anna. You remember it out loud and nearly topple over as you stand.

Saving yourself from embarrassment, you ask her about herself. You have seen her from time to time, sometimes with her father, or waiting on you. She raises an eyebrow and a small part of your mind wants to kiss her.
You tell her that she has been working for you for a while now, and you have always liked talking to those who served under you. Made you see them as people worthy of fighting alongside. You intended to talk to her, but you had a lot on your plate. The last part was true, the former was not. She didn't need to know that. You had dragged yourself into an ambush, much like Sir Lothar.
Of course, Anna was a far more gentle opponent than Orgrim Doomhammer. She was born a year later than you, the first daughter of her father. Anna was educated at the chapter school, and before the orc invasion, she wanted to become a healer. She was also the person who cooked your meals before serving them.

You thank her and compliment her on her cooking, a bit too generously. This elicits a small blush and chuckle from her. You switch to asking her about her father. Garth Ryson has always been deferential to your decision, and his initial low opinion of you has faded away as far as you can tell. She confirms your suspicion that he was a military man. He was part of the Northern garrison and the one that directly opposed the lightbringer's forces. She asks you about where you served during the war.

All in due time, you promise her. You have lost too many friends in the war, and their faces still haunt your dreams. You tell Anna that you hadn't seen alterac in years and you are curious as to what happened to alterac during the war.

She seems subdued as she starts recounting what happened during the war. She had volunteered to help the soldiers garrisoning the southern approaches. Her work was mostly dealing with frostbite and the occasional equestrian injuries that men sustained. She was making a pretty penny and felt that she was helping the people of Alterac during their darkest hour. You notice that she drains a glass of the stout before continuing.

Then she heard that the garrison had to let the orcish horde through. She was surprised as general Hath. Apparently General Hath had been ordered to let the orcish horde pass. She had watched as the orcish vanguard had passed through tower pointe, watching thousands of the hunchbacked monsters pass through, watching their grim trophies, watching the orcs drive a large number of slaves, several of them half naked and cruelly abused. The slaves were invariably starving and she watched many of them die as they passed through the garrison. The half naked women and children dying in the falling winter snow while the trolls ate the least skinny of them still gives her nightmares.

That was the least of Alterac's trouble. A few days later, Thoras trollbane appeared with a vanguard of Stromgarde's forces. There was no love lost between the two nations and the garrison roused themselves to fight Stromgarde after letting the orcs pass through. She watched as a herald called for the commander of the garrison, and watched as general hath went to parlay with trollbane. After he returned, he allowed trollbane to pass through as well. He had refused the orders of his sovereign and had broken his oath.
>>
>>46828526
Shits fucked yo.
>>
>>46828526
She remained in the garrison, doing her job and had her hands full when the orders came for the Alteraci forces to be disarmed. Uther Lightbringer, a paladin had ordered that the nation of alterac be destroyed for it's treachery at such a crucial hour. Alterac had decided to betray them all, and retribution would be swift. The forces of lordaeron marauded throughout the northlands, and killed many people, both soldier and civilian as they pacified the north. The garrison resisted the Lordaeronian invasion but were eventually defeated. Most of the leaders were either executed for high treason, or declared outlaws.

Thoras trollbane personally saw through the disarmament of the southern garrison. You had never been told that he effectively ordered the slaughter of the garrison. You had been told that they resisted arrest and had tried to attack the Stromgarde soldiers, leading to the attack. Anna tells you that the attack came late at night. She was with the engineers who were shoring up parts of the garrison when the Stromgarde brigade entered the barracks and killed the sleeping soldiers in cold blood.

She escaped with the engineers, moving northward and towards the capital city as she assumed that it would be the safest place in alterac. The King would surely protect them all.

She took several more drinks and you took your share as you leaned in closer to hear her.

They saw as Uther' army besieged the fortress, cordoning it off, and saw a stromgarde army move towards Strombrad. They made for the town and prepared to defend it. She tried to reach her mother and her sister, and found out that a contingent of stromgarde knights had already taken over the town. She sneaked into the town with the engineers via the causeway and walked to her house, and saw that beyond all hope, her parents and her little sister were safe. When she asked about her brothers, Anna's mother broke into tears.
>>
>>46828786
Garth told the captain of the garrison that he was the deputy mayor of the town which was technically true. Strombrad captain of the militia was also the deputy mayor and if the captain was unavailable, the most senior rank took on that mantle. As a result Anna found out that her family had moved up the social ladder. However, this brought accusations about the Rysons being cowards, deserters and whores. She was harassed several times by the people that were flooding into Strombrad as it had been left untouched by the war. Until you had rationed the food and forcibly instituted the work program, the town was on the verge of rioting. Their status had begun to improve after that, and they were looked at kindly only after Isiden had thanked Mayor Ryson personally for taking good care of his town when he went to take his throne.

Anna finishes her tale, notably more drunk than before, and seems to be on the verge of tears. In her own way, she has seen terrible atrocities and survived all that. Even as she finishes talking, she starts saying something about seeing a starving child who looked like her younger sister in the flesh lying outside the garrison, too skinny to even eaten by the trolls and too small to be made into a trophy. She was bleeding from her feet and the snow around her was crimson. Once the orcs had gone, she had rushed to try and save the child and had nearly retched in horror at the child's skin. She had been branded and her ears had been cut off, and she was too weak to survive for much longer. Anna carried her to the medical tent and watched the spitting image of her sister pass away.

As she finishes her tale, you see that her voice has cracked and that she is crying into her bowl. This is a bit too much for you. You are now the boy again watching Robute's parents breaking down as you give them his grandfather's pocket timepiece.

Awkardly, you pat her hand and take another drink. She has probably never told anyone about the last thing she saw, and you can see why she is protective of her family. You thank her for her story and tell her your own story.

She doesn't need to hear about the sack of stormwind or the flight across the sea before landing at southshore. Instead you tell her about the time you fought during the advance across the thandol span, driving back the orcs in a route towards grim batol. You made friends there and lost them there. Gamil is one of the few that survived. You tell her you fought at Quel'thalas, retreating deeper into the forest and covering the retreat from windrunner spire with your comrades. Still drunk, you describe the brotherhood's last charge in with a languidity that surprises you. You still remember bearing the banner as your brothers fall around you, their horses still running forward irresistibly even as their riders fall. You remember the duel with the troll leader, wearing a necklace made of children's ears. You remember the gleam in his eyes as he unhorses you and the banner falls to the ground. You describe your duel as though you are a bard, singing of tyr's fall. You remember the troll's eyes go dark as it's head falls off as you bring your sword around in an arc. You are there again, time has slowed down again. You pick up the fallen banner of the brotherhood and yell out the war cry of Alterac. In the distant forests of Quel'thalas, the brotherhood watches with it's dying breath as the Eagle rises.

Anna has stopped crying. You notice that she is holding your hand. Awkwardly you hug her, and she doesn't pull away. Before it becomes too awkward for the two of you, you decide to stop holding her. She does the same and you breathe a sigh of relief. Even as you do, she leans in and grabs your shoulder before kissing you fully on the lips.

You don't care if it is not improper or if it will cause a scandal. You respond to her kiss in kind, and your tongues entwine. Your brain stops protesting and you follow your heart. She stops after a moment. You are surprised at her strength as you lead her towards your bedroom. She seems eager to push you out of the way and opens the door. You see that she has taken her robes off and you watch her in her undergarments, showing off her perfect body while hiding the most important parts. She helps you take off your breeches and you respond by loosening her bodice. It falls off with a clatter as she pulls you into the bed. The next hour is by far the best you have ever had ever since you found the signet ring. After the two of you are finished, you embrace her and she snuggles close to you, giving you a light kiss on your cheeks. Too exhausted for words you start drifting into a drowsy slumber. You dimly recall your breath in sync with Anna's and you fall asleep.

You wake up with a sharp knock on the door. Anna is still sleeping next to you, her golden hair contrasting beautifully with your black hair.
The knock comes again and you watch Anna stir for a moment before falling asleep again.

You open a hairline crack, hoping that it's not Anna's mother or sister. Garth is gone for a couple of days, at least he won't need to know.

You open the door as soon as Krasus' servant is about to knock again. She takes in your naked body for a moment before telling you that her master is indisposed, but the council has agreed to meet you, in secret.

>tell her to meet them now. (you wear suitable clothes though)

You nod, before closing the door and trying to find your undergarments and your breeches without waking Anna up. You dress yourself the best as you can before opening the door again. The hallway is filled with a strange purple glow as you open the door. The mage is channeling a portal. You ask her what she is doing and she simply points towards it, urging you to step into the portal. You see an empty antechamber and and feel the rush of cold air hitting you. You shrug and walk into the portal. Its like stepping through icy water and all your hair feels like it is inside a gnomish discombobulator. And then you step outside to the other side. You are in a cavernous hall that is dark that smells like a sewer. In a moment Krasus' lackey steps in after you, and you see the portal dissipate.

Almost as an afterthought you realize you left your sword and your dirk in your study. Another afterthought. A sewer is the perfect place to dispose of a body.

You turn to look at Krasus' servant. questions forming in your mind

"So why is it you have brought me here?" There is a time for subtlety, and being in a sewer of a city unarmed isn't it. You really hope that this isn't going to be your grave. It would be anticlimactic after everything you have been through. Fate couldn't have plucked you from blackrock spire to leave you to die in the excrement of a city.
She doesn't answer, instead smiling in a cryptic manner that is as enthralling as it is infuriating. You wonder if you are to be assassinated here, maybe you can choke her before you are finished off.
You are broken out of your reverie as you see another person enter the sewers. It is a woman, older than you but pleasant to look at. Her hair is white as the cowl on her head but you see the tabard she is wearing catches your attention. A purple base on which a golden eye is drawn with three lines underneath it, seemingly emerging from the iris.

Well, you are not going to die. Probably. Although you did not expect Krasus to be an aging woman. You stride towards her, arm held out in greeting and immediately run into an invisible wall. It hits you like a charging orc and you nearly fall over. Then the woman speaks.

"You said you required the aid of dalaran? Speak you piece lord Falconcrest."

You tell her what you know about the recent murders and supposed uprisings. She listens to your suspicions and warnings and then raises a hand.

"A suspicion? A mere suspicion? You wish to waste the time of the council based on hearsay? Do you think us to be fools? Rathaella, send him back to his mountain hold. Report back to me if he gets in over his head."

And with that dismissive reproach, she raises her hand and is gone in a flash. Even as you feel the wall disappear, the elf - Rathaella is opening her portal. You can see the townhall in the distance. Much like a whipped orc, you go through it without a word.

You will only have yourselves to blame for this arrogance. Like you dismissed our cries for help and pleas in the past when the orc hordes came to us. You dismiss us once again when we call for help ..... for the last time.
>>
>>46831324
Maybe say the last part quietly under our breath as we step through the portal.

And I'm all caught up.
>>
>>46831324
"well that was not what I expected." You say, glowering at Rathaella.

She says something enigmatic.

"The council of six oftentimes deals with matters that deal with all creation, Lord Falconcrest."

"While the world around them burns? What sort of council is this? What were they planning on doing if Lordaeron burned when the horde on the cusp of victory? Fly the city away north and away from harm? Is this how the great archmages of the Kirin tor, the mightiest wizards and puissant mages save the world? By shutting out as their fellow nations cry out for help?" Your rhetorical question has reached enough people in the town to turn a few heads.
They see you arguing with the elf mage who fought alongside you at Quel'thalas.

"My lord falconcrest, the world is bigger than Alterac and some of it's petty rebels. There are matters at hand more important than the unfounded suspicion of some rebelling lordlings." Her tone is just like you have heard from the elves. Completely dismissive and refusing to see the threat before their eyes. They are as shortsighted as they are long eared.

"We let the orcs through when the world deemed us unimportant, and not worthy of aid and as lambs to the slaughter. We asked for aid and none came. I am done asking aid from your kind. Better men than you and yours lie under the ground of quel'thalas, giving their lives for a land that had all but thrown them to the horde, much like you throw us to the vultures now."

She tries to speak but you silence her, your voice low again.

"Thank you ambassador. Diplomatic niceties are all that prevent me from having you sent back to Dalaran with that pretty head removed from your shoulders."
>>
>>46832839
As you return to the town hall, you see Rathaella walk behind you. She is clearly not done with you. Her tone is soft now, playing the role of ambassador now. Trying to mend the hurt that her master made.

"My Lord Falconcrest. We are not so unreasonable as you might believe. We are still allies. All you have to do is give me evidence of this group employing dark magics and the council will stand by you."

She grasps you hand in her, desperate for you to listen to her.

"Please, I can still help you. I will personally help you investigate these rebels and will ask for aid on my own if the rebels rise up. The Kirin tor is not your enemy my lord."

>spurn her offer. Dalaran is too fickle to be trusted.
>accept it. A city of mages is a powerful ally

Also I am about to take a nap.
>>
>>46832985
>spurn her offer. Dalaran is too fickle to be trusted.
"it isn't my friend either, as it has so proven."
>>
>>46833045
"It certainly is not my friend. Do whatever it is you want my lady. I will not be the one to break the Alliance, but as it stands now, your embassy is worth less that the contents of yonder chamber pot. Once again, I bid you good day and ask you to leave me. I have have work to do, and my people to save, even though they be of little concern to the high and mighty."

Not your finest speech but it gets the point across. Now you have to train an army that is loyal to you. Garth's note on the militia goes well. Around half the people have decided to fight with the long pike wall, while the other have taken to the guns with gusto. There remains the matter of the cavalry. Alterac cannot compete with the knights of Lordaeron in terms of elan or arms. However, the first set of arms from Kul Tiras has arrived. This has given you a surplus of pistols, enough to equip a cavalry force of a few hundred.

>ask the king to fund the cavalry force. They will be loyal to him and Alterac
>fund them yourself. They will be loyal to you and Alterac, and you will have to oversee their training yourself

As the season draws to a close, you come to the conclusion that you don't have the money or the resources to equip your soldiers as knights. Your soldiers. These men are the younger sons of farmers who have grown rich off the trade passing through Alterac. If you had control of the iron mines, you would have been able to raise a force of knights. They would be a poor copy of the brotherhood of the horse, and a waste. Instead you decide to cut your losses. Mathie has helped Gamil set up a dwarven workshop, and the pair are hard at work making armor. Instead of the imposing armor of full plate that the forces of the alliance have been wearing, you have decided to equip them with smaller bits of plate that protect their chests and head. The militia will have to rely on the men to their left to survive. A harsh measure, but one that will let you equip your men to survive. The gunners are even more lightly armored, wearing only their tunics and breeches, and armed with the Gunrifles that Gamil is cranking out. His gnomes have made a curious steam powered device that makes a hundred of those weapons in a week.

As for you, you take the horsemen on their paces during this time. Day in and day out, you teach them how to stay stable on their horseback, and how to charge with a lance. After the first week you stop trying to do that. These men are not on warhorses but rather mountain ponies and mules. Instead you make them practice their marksman ship and order them to fire their pistols at a gallop. Most of these weapons are made by the local workshops that supply your militia. You must ensure that quality of weapons is maintained. Gunpowder misfires are a fact of life and you don't want your boys to die in accidents.

As the season grows warmer, you receive a notice from your spies. Stromgarde is preparing to abandon the towers at the pass.

>seize the towers for alterac, making a grand display of your army
>let the king do it. It is his duty

>>seize the towers for alterac, making a grand display of your army

>>46834345
>let the king do it. It is his duty
Don't want waste manpower on manning that tower. If we are attacked then we'd need the soldiers at home. besides those training facilities are for forms of warfare we are not exactly looking to peruse.
Should focus on our army and militias.

Can we make crossbows and spears/halberds too?

The militia itself is largely armed like the spanish and the swiss during the 30 years war. Gamil sama is churning out his autistic gunrifles which are basically rifled muskets. They shoot accurately and a trained soldier fires around four shots a minute.
They are guarded by a mixed force of pikemen and halberdiers. The pike was adopted by the forces of alterac to deal easily with the mountain yetis that plagued upon the settlers who build Strombrad, or as it is being called now, Strahnbrad. General Hath made improvements to it making the front ranks bury their pikes at an oblong angle to deal with Stromgarde's cavalry advantage.

The pistoliers are your personal guard. They are largely men that you resettled onto the farms surrounding Strahnbrad once you returned and started the roadways project. They are as reliable as it gets. They number around two hundred soldiers.

Now if you do the first thing, you gain a lot of cred in the new alteraci pecking order, and many eyes, both friendly and those of your enemies see you making a bold move.

If you do the latter, you can start the hunt for the syndicate sooner and order the military engineers back into your army.
>>

It has always been the king's traditional duty to assign a commander who would lead his household guard to garrison tower pointe. General Hath was the best commander alterac had. You were pretty sure lord godfrey would be given control of tower pointe. Let him keep it garrisoned. You didn't have time for this petty power mongering. Someone out there was actively trying to kill you. You had to kill them first.

You order Ryson to keep the drills going, and start sending out search parties for the engineers. Your forces would lay stake to the abandoned alteraci wayforts along the northern causeway. As the first snows begin to fall, you are leading your charger alongside your riders. Ryson, both father and daughter are with the garrisoning force, and so is the elf, Arcanist Rathaella.

You had spent days investigating the note, and had come up with nothing. It galled you but you asked her for help on the condition that she not report this to her seniors at Dalaran. Eager to mend relations, she had agreed. You wondered if the quick pace at which you had raised the militia into a competent army had anything to do with it. Yes, that must be it. You would show them that eagles have talons. And your's was exceptionally sharp. She had realized that it was guarded by enchantments that required herbs that only grew in alterac valley. So here you were, riding for the valleys while you were ostensibly garrisoning the northern causeways. Garth would find the engineers and use them to rebuild the forts. You wouldn't allow another rampaging army - human or orc - laying waste to your nation without spilling blood. You ride to the valley to find out more about the syndicate

Rathaella comes up to you. She wants to know about the valley and your people as she is now the closest thing to an ambassador from her people.
