You slept like the dead last night, which meant that for once waking up felt like a damn chore. But no matter, it was your first week as a Rank Three Lieutenant. You get your own personal office, Denise is still your personal assistant, and you now get 500 dollars every week instead of 200! That’ll be something alright, hehe.

You look at your Officer’s Pad, and watch it ping as your new payment comes in.

> + 500 DOLLARS

Yes!

“Wow!” Winona looks over your shoulder, astonished by it. The five of you were at the mirrors in the showerroom, making yourselves presentable for today’s work. Or in Winona’s case, for vacation. Unlike all of you (in your uniforms), she was wearing a simple yellow tank top with a white bikini beneath it, and denim short shorts along with her black thigh highs. “You’re making some mad money, Ellie.”

“Thanks,” you say. “Taking an off day?”

“Yeppers!” Winona grins, then puckers her lips as she puts on her lipstick. “Mmmmwah! I’m going to take my little snake Cuddles to the store, then I’m gonna hit the pool, get my tan on! Did you want to come with?”

Maybe we can spend some time with Winona after work. That's probably something that's doable.

“No thanks, I got work to do. I’m not going to shirk it,” you say.

“Awww, Ellie the workaholic!” Winona pats your cheek, smiling cutely at you. You slap her hand away, not amused in the slightest. “Well, you know where to find me once your shift is up!” And with that, Winona leaves.

Ingrid blinks, looking over as she puts on her glasses. “What exactly do you do anyway?”

“Yeah,” says Stack. “You’re a Logistics Major right?” You nod. “Do you like… do paperwork all day?”

“I’m sure it’s not like that,” you say.

You and Denise, led by Lieutenant McLean, step into your new personal office. It’s definitely cozy that’s for sure. The paint on the walls was peeling away, showing off the stark metal underneath. The two desks (one for the officer and one for the secretary) were nearly on top of each other. Denise’s desk would be right next to the door while yours was right next to the big open window.

You took a walk over, and immediately the fresh scent of salt water and sound of ships docking, welding, trucks going and reversing, was the first to assault you. Looking down now you see that your office actually overlooks one of the main Supply Docks of LGA.

That noise is probably going to get annoying.

Still, other than that, quite a bit of dust was settled over everything. The file cabinets looked like they were older than you are that’s for sure. And these computers were…

You blink. They’re Macs, but from the era where Macs were boxy.

Lieutenant McLean smiles at you. “What do you think?”

“Well, honestly speaking, it has a lot of character to it, that’s for sure.”

Lieutenant McLean smirks a bit. “I know it’s a bit of a fixer upper, but try and hold on for me, alright, beau? It’ll be nice to have someone as productive as you for a coworker.” That puts a smile on your face, that’s for sure. “If you need me, I’m next door, alright?”

“Okay,” you nod at that. “What’s the job for today?”

“Whatever comes in through that door,” she says. And with that, McLean salutes you and leaves your office.

Wow, your own office. You brush some dust off of your leather chair and plop down in it. You look over to see that Denise has done the same at her desk. She quickly grins and waves at you. You wave back. At least she’s optimistic.

You sigh. Then cough. Oh God, there’s shitloads of dust in here, Jesus Christ.

After finding a pair of masks, some gloves, and some cleaning implements, you and Denise got to work quickly cleaning the office. Ugh, you have never ever EVER been in a room that’s got so much dust and grime in it. Even back home, Mom always made it a point to you to keep things clean! What does this say about you as an Officer if you’re given an Office that isn’t even clean!?

You cough. Oh fuck, dust! More dust clears as you wave it away from your face. “How are you holding up, Denise?”

“I’m fine!” she says as she sprays the window with soap. She starts wiping it down.

You grumble a little. They couldn’t have given you an office that was clean?

There’s a knock at the door. “Door’s open!” you call. The door opens. “Listen, we’re in the middle of cleaning so-“ You drop everything and salute. “Denise!” Denise turns around to see Block Officer Hatteberg standing in the doorway. She salutes as well. “Ma’am! Er-“

Hatteberg clears some dust clouds with a wave of her hand, then points to your desk. A Naval Studies student comes in, then drops a huge stack of paperwork on it. You take a look at the first page. “Export Clearance Records.” She also points to your file cabinet.

Oh, she wants to you to sort these things.

She grunts, then shuts the door.

“How many pages?” you ask.

Denise blinks. “About two hundred. Did you want me to do this for you?”

“I’ll do it.” You sit down at your desk. “Keep cleaning.” She nods, hurrying to squeegee the window down so she can help you out.

It’s fine, it’s only… two hundred pages to sort and file through.

-

-

> ONE HUNDRED NINETY NINE PAGES LATER <

Sweet mercy you’re almost done. You force your eyes open and scratch out the last confirmation on the last piece of paper. After this, you have to file this away in your file cabinets, each one by date and by destination of export. Ugh… Denise continues cleaning, dusting more debris out the door with a broom. “Almost done?” she asks.

“Yeah,” you arch your back and throw your arms up. “Aaaahhh!” You stretch yourself, and make a few bones pop in relief. Ooooh that feels nice. Okay, whew. Hard work this.

Suddenly, a Naval Studies girl pops in. “Lieutenant?” You nod to her. She salutes to you. “I know you must be very busy and all but I was directed to you to you-“

“What do you want?” you ask tiredly. Maybe a bit harshly.

She swallows, then bites her lip. “My dog got off his leash and ran off and I can’t find him. I- uh… I don’t suppose you could go and find him?”

> “Sure we can. I’ll look for your dog personally.”

“Sure we can,” you say. You stand up and point to Denise. “Denise, put out a missing animal report uh…” You point back to the girl. “What’s your dog look like?’

“He’s a corgi, answers to Skidmark,” she says. You blink. Skidmark? “I found him when he was a little pup that was about to run over by a truck.” Oh, yeah, that’s a relevant name you guess. You check your watch. Yeah, you could probably do this over your lunch break.

“Denise, I’m gonna head out with this girl and help her find the dog, are you okay to handle any work that comes in?”

She salutes you, smiling. “Willing and able!”

“Great!” You snap your finger, smiling at her. “Catch you later.”

And with that, you leave your little office and go off dog hunting.

-

-

The girl has brought you to an absolutely grueling hot day. Jesus fuck, summer is out in full force that’s for sure. You shade your eyes, squinting as the two of you search the last place the dog was seen at, the park. “He was right here, and I just…” She scratches her chin, grimacing. “Where could he have gone?”

“Maybe someone took him to the animal shelter?” you ask.

“I checked there already,” she mopes. “Mmm…”

“Hey, Ellie!” Looking over, you see a huge batch of dogs of all types of breeds being walked by LGA’s ardent treasure hunter, Kathy Wheeler. “Saw your performance this weekend, you were great!”

“Thanks,” you say. “Walking your dogs?” They all look up at you, panting happily. Aw, that just melts your heart.

“Yeah!” Kathy smiles. “Gotta give the little boys a bit of-“

“Hey!” The girl points to a corgi in the mix. “That’s my dog!”

You blink. Kathy tilts her head back, puffing her cheeks out and pressing her lips tight. “… no it isn’t,” says Kathy.

“Yeah it is!” says the girl. “Skidmark!” The corgi barks, tugging on his leash towards the girl. “Aw, what did this mean girl do to you!” The girl kneels down, pouting at Kathy.

“Hey, I didn’t do anything!” says Kathy. “He got off his leash and I saw that he was all alone wandering around all confused and I… decided to adopt him.” The two of you stare at her. “… look, when I see a dog in need I offer shelter! I love dogs!” Now you’re wondering if all of the dogs in her care are even hers.

“Give her back the dog,” you order. Kathy groans, letting Skidmark off his leash and back into the girl’s arms.

“Thank you!” she says. She reaches into her purse. “Lemme get you a reward.”

“Aw…” The girl immediately pecks you on the cheek then. OI WHAT THE FUCK- “You’re such a sweetheart, Lieutenant! Later!” She immediately picks up her dog and leaves, leaving you with Kathy.

Kathy sidles up to you, along with her dogs as well. “Oooooooh, you are so red right now!”

“Shut up!” you say. You wipe it off of your cheek. “No don’t go stealing people’s dogs, okay?”

“No promises,” says Kathy. You glare at her, folding your arms. “What? I’m just saying, sometimes people just leave their dogs around and never come back for them, where else are they gonna go!?” Ugh.

-

-

You arrive back at the Office. “Denise, I’m back. I settled the thing with the dog and-“ You find Denise staring up at the ceiling, her eyes glazed over. “… are you okay?”

“Hatteberg came back with another stack of paperwork,” she says. She points to the filing cabinet. “I filed it all away, it’s all done.” You blink. Oh. That must have been terrible, Denise. “She told to tell you that there’s going to be more work this coming weekend because they’re expecting a really big guest coming.”

“Who?” you ask.

“William Griffiths of Griffiths Industries.” Hm, Griffiths. Is that Winona’s father? “He’s coming around soon to open up a Tank racing center probably tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.” Ooooh, tank racing! “… I’m so tired.”

You check your watch. It’s actually about quitting time.

You and Denise pull up outside of the Tankery HQ, where you find that Oleg has begun work at repairing the tanks from last weekend’s bouts. He gives a gentle wave as you two walk by towards the tank under the tarp.

Thaddeus the King Tiger. You pull the tarp off, and find that most of the rust has been washed off, revealing the Feldgrau paint beneath along with a black fleur-de-lis on the side of the turret and the name on the side of the hull. “Wow.” Denise stands in awe of the tank. “It’s huge!”

You nod, and point to the turret as well. “And see that little curve on the bottom of the turret?” Denise nods. “That means its an early production model made by Porsche. They call these the Porsche King Tigers, the ones with a flat face are the Henschel models.”

“Ooooh.” Denise tilts her head. Thaddeus was still missing his suspension and his road wheels and tracks, and judging by how rotted and eaten away the engine block was, well, the engine definitely wasn’t in good spirits either.

Kathy pulls in with her truck. “Hey there!” She stops up the truck in front of you all. “I got your call, you ready to do some fortune finding today?”

“Oh?” Kathy steps out of her truck, looking up at the tank. “Well, I ain’t much of a tank expert, but I can tell you right now, a museum would love an authentic WWII King Tiger.”

“It’s ours for now, but I think we should rummage around, see what we can find.”

Denise yawns. “Yeah, you two do that. I’m just gonna sit here.” Denise somehow has found her way into the bed of Kathy’s truck, where the dogs all start lying around or on her. “Aaaahhh… this is the life.”

Fair enough, she deserves a little rest. “Oleg, can we go into the KT?!” you yell out.

“Da!” he says back. “I cleaned out the rust, so it should be safe to breathe in Thaddeus!”

You and Kathy slip inside. “Whoa, dark in here,” she says. She turns on a lantern, then sticks it onto the compartment’s ceiling. “So, what are we looking for?” she asks.

“Answers,” you say. “There’s no way a King Tiger gets displaced without record.” You kneel down into the driver’s compartment, and open up the hatch for some light. Even with all the rust gone it is kind of hard to breathe in here and…

Wait. You squint, and find an old photo.

Huh. You pick it up. “Kathy.” She shines a light over to you as you both look at it.

On the photo were five girls sitting on top of a King Tiger, presumably Thaddeus. The color had long faded away from the photo, but you could still make out a lot of detail. They had uniforms like yours, and in the background was definitely a clear sky. They were all smiles and-

“Hey.” Kathy points to the commander. “Isn’t that Commissioner Durocher?” What? You squint harder.

… actually, it does sort of look like Commissioner Durocher. Huh.

“Yeah, yeah, and-“ Kathy gasps, pointing to the loader. “And that’s Miss McPherson!” She nudges you. “She’s a teacher here!”

“Is she teaching now?” you ask.

“She has a summer class here!” says Kathy. “She never mentioned being LGA alumni though.”

“Neither did Durocher,” you say.

“Let’s keep searching around, see what we can find,” you say. Kathy nods, giving you a thumbs up. The two of you continue to search around the King Tiger. The inside is actually quite spacey. Even with the interior mostly rotted away from the water and the passage of time, you could tell that there must have been a lot of good times had in this tank. It almost feels like you’re invading someone’s home in that sense.

You hope whoever used to own this tank forgives you.

“Heeeey!” Kathy holds up a tin box. “Come on, let’s get out and open this!” The two of you hop onto the turret, then place the box down. Kathy smiles, rubbing her hands. “Looks like it’s been sealed! So, let’s see what we get!”

She opens it up, and inside is a treasure trove of old antiques. Binoculars, throat mics, a flare gun! And a few more photographs of Thaddeus and his crew. One portraying the crew in the midst of a tank fight, inside of their tank at the controls. Another is a short picnic with everyone in their school uniforms, wind brushing their hair to the side, and one of them almost off the tank. And a third with Thaddeus and another tank, by the look of it an M4 Sherman (which may actually be Cupid or “Patches” as he was known back then).

“Whoa!” Kathy holds up the flare gun. “This is old antique stuff! Really cool antique stuff!” She shuts it, smiling at you. “Hey, you let me have this stuff I could get a good price for it. I’ll let you have half the cut!”

“Actually, let’s not sell this stuff,” you declare. Kathy frowns, disappointed. “Come on, if McPherson and Commissioner Durocher are the girls in the pictures, then maybe they won’t like it if we just sell their stuff willy-nilly!”

“Mmm, Miss McPherson never talks about Tankery though,” says Kathy. She huffs, folding her arms. “Fine, but the next thing we find, I am going to sell.”

“Fair,” you say. The two of you drop off the tank. You think for now that’s all you’ll find out of the tank.

“Damn though, I’m hungry, wanna get something to eat?” You shrug. Why not? Might as well. The two of you step into her truck, and she begins pulling out of the HQ. You look back to see Denise still napping away, her leg twitching a little as she lies next to one of the dogs. “I’m thinking burgers.”

“Still, Kathy,” you say. “You realize that if this is Commissioner Durocher in this picture, she’s got some explaining to do. I met with her before the Heinlein match, she never said anything about attending LGA.”

Kathy shrugs. “Maybe she wasn’t a student. Hell, Zhou Enlai Business School mostly relies on foreign talent I hear.”

“Maybe…” You rub your chin, thinking, hm.

Miss McPherson is a bit of an old woman, got grey streaks in her blonde hair, but she still has the arms and the body of a loader that’s for sure. The two of you press your faces against the screen looking into the faculty office where she and a few other teachers are busy working. She looks over, then adjusts her glasses a little in disbelief. “… Door’s open, girls.”

The two of you walk in, smiling. “Hey, Miss McPherson!” greets Kathy.

“Kathy, how’s the Indiana Jones business going?” asks Miss McPherson. She points to a few spare chairs, and the two of you sit down.

“Oh, it’s going great,” says Kathy. “Uh, you know Ellie right?”

Miss McPherson nods. “Yeah, nice to meet you, sweetie.” She looks at Kathy, unamused. “Kathy, can we uh… move this along I’m kind of busy.”

“Yeah, yeah, right uh… we happened to find a tank beneath a waterfall.” No reaction. “It was a King Tiger.” She nods slowly, still not much reaction. “And inside that tank, we found this photo and this tin box!” Kathy holds up the photo of the crew. She points to the loader. “Is that you, Miss McPherson?”

She adjusts her glasses a bit, squinting at it. “Yeah, that’s me.” She leans back. “You found a… King Tiger?”

You nod. “Porsche turret.”

“Porsche turret?” Miss McPherson damn near jumps out of her chair at that, she blinks, surprised. “Feldgrau, black stripes?” You nod at that. “… I see.”

“Was that your tank?” you ask.

“Yeah, yeah, he-…” She coughs, leaning back. “It was. Um. What’d you-…” She points to the tin box, and you gently place it in her lap. She opens it up, and immediately goes to rifling through it.

“See I wanted to sell it,” says Kathy.

“Good thing you didn’t, I would’ve killed you,” says Miss McPherson. You snort a bit, and to that Kathy pouts a little. “Wow…”

“So, how did Thaddeus end up where he did?” you ask. “It doesn’t seem too rational.” She stops, then looks up at you two.

“Erm.” She smiles a little, a bit nervously. “I’m not really uh… the one to talk to about this, I get my memory mixed up. I’m getting old, girls. You know, Alzheimer’s.” She whirls her finger next to her ear, trying to make herself look loopy. “Wooooo…”

Yeah, you’re not convinced.

The two of you look at her with the skeptical intensity of a thousand suns. Miss McPherson crosses her arms, squinting a bit at you two. “Hey, I’m just saying. My memory isn’t what it used to be. That’s what happens when you get old, I mean, back in the 70s sure but… you know, something.”

“Funny, we don’t actually have too many records of our Tankery league in the 70s,” you say.

“Yeah, big gap,” says Kathy.

Miss McPherson bites her lip, looking away a bit.

“What do you mean you can’t say?” you ask gently.

“Look.” She holds up a hand, trying to speak firmly but gently to you two. “Girls, all of what happened, happened so long ago and I’d… I’d hate to bring up um…” She keeps her fingers on the flare gun, rubbing the barrel and the grip. “I’d hate to bring up bad memories.”

“Did someone die?” asks Kathy.

“Fuck no!” She covers her mouth as a few teachers look over. “I-…” She opens her mouth. “No, nobody died! We’d be charged for manslaughter then and I wouldn’t be a teacher! No, nobody got hurt either!”

“Then what happened?” you ask.

“You-“ She stops herself, sighing. “… Did uh… did Dottie talk to you all about this?” You shake your heads. “Well, good. She definitely won’t say anything to you, and if she doesn’t I won’t either.”

“Do you want to see the tank?” you ask. She blinks in surprise at that. “We’re fixing him up to use him in the NATO league. Once we get him restored and find a crew for him, he’ll be back in action. If he’s your tank, I figured you’d want to see him.”

Kathy smiles at you, nudging you. “Yeah, way to-“ You slap her on the arm, silencing her.

Miss McPherson sighs, rubbing her wrinkled forehead. “… fine, just for five minutes, then I have to go back to grading these papers, okay?”

Oleg has left for the night, leaving Griselda as the sole person inside of the Hangar when the three of you arrived (Denise was still napping in the cab. Heavy sleeper.) Griselda smiles, looking at you all. “Hey, girls.” She quirks her brow. “Miss McPherson?”

“Griselda,” says Miss McPherson as she walks past.

Griselda looks at you and Kathy, weirded out. “Why is the most hated math teacher in LGA here?”

You point to the King Tiger. “That’s her tank.” Griselda’s jaw drops, then she turns around to see her walk towards the tank.

Miss McPherson slowly walks up to Thaddeus, and stands in awe at the impressive frontal hull. She gently places a hand on the glacis plate, smirking a bit. “Wow.” Her smirk turns into a grin. You step up next to her, smiling. “You know, honestly, I’d never thought I’d see the old boy again.” She leans over, then her face turns into a frown. “Oh, Thaddy… where have your wheels gone?”

“Wheels and suspension were missing,” you say. “Plus, the engine was too far gone to fix, we need to get a new one.”

“Oooh, poor baby.” Miss McPherson almost looks on the verge of tears.

Griselda and Kathy walk up next to you, helping you give Miss McPherson a moment. You could tell by the way she stands in Thaddeus’ shadow that the memories are definitely flooding back to her. She takes another short walk around to his side, then gently brushes her hand along the name sprayed onto the side. She almost looks like a child meeting her childhood hero.

She takes another deep breath, sighing deeply. “Wow.”

“You know, the inside is good if you want to see it,” you say quietly. She looks over at you three, then nods. She expertly grabs the side, then hoists herself up.

She points to you. “Come on. Let’s go.” The two of you climb on inside.

And in the dimly lit interior, she sits down in the loader’s seat. She smiles, bouncing a bit in it as she looks around the turret. She then places her hand on the gun breech while sit on the commander’s chair. “You know what this reminds me of?” she says.

“What?”

“We had a match during the winter. It was against a richer team, they could afford a lot of tank destroyers, they’d throw them in ambush positions waiting for us to come to them. But, we decided to make a picnic of that day. We weren’t falling for it. And back then, tankery matches could go on for days. You just had to remember to pack camping gear.” She leans back, placing her hands in her lap. “I remember Dottie trying so hard to light a fire for us. Dottie-“ She looks at you. “Dottie was a really fun girl to be around, always trying to keep you happy, always looking out for you but damn she never liked to admit defeat.” You smile as she does. “We had to help her, she sulked the rest of the night, but we cheered her up with a little something.”

“What?” you ask.

“Did you win?” you ask.

“Oh, yeah, we won.” She leans back, sighing. “But um… yeah, we were one of the best teams around.”

“So what happened then?” you ask.

She frowns now. She looks back at you. “We were expelled.” You blink. What? “I can’t tell you why we were expelled. But we were. That was 40 years ago. It’s done.”

“But why?” you ask.

“I-“ She sighs. “Look, it was nice of you to see Thaddeus again but I’ve already told you way too much, alright?” She looks at you sadly. “Can you just… drop it?”

“Nothing too important,” you say. Miss McPherson nods, patting you on the shoulder. “Anyway, it’s late, we should retire for the night, Kathy.” Kathy shrugs, in apparent agreement.

Griselda smiles at you and Miss McPherson. “How was it inside?”

“Oh, it was as I remembered it,” she says simply. She looks to you and Griselda. “Listen you two, just a word of advice. Tankery isn’t just about winning. There’s an experience to be had in it.”

“We know,” says Griselda. “Don’t worry-“

“No.” Miss McPherson sternly addresses Griselda. “No, you don’t know. If you get into Tankery just to win, you don’t deserve to be a Tanker.” And with that comes deafening silence. “That’s my opinion at least.” She points her thumb to the door. “I better get going.”

“Alright,” says Griselda. And with that, she leaves. The three of you watch her leave. “You think she means that?”

Griselda checks her watch. “Well, she’s right. It is late.”

“Sure, that’d be excellent,” you say. Griselda nods, and moves to pull her truck in.

While that’s happening, you decide to give Winona a call. You dial up her number and wait.

“Ellie! Where have you been!?” Winona sounds very frantic. “We gotta clean my dorm! I gotta make myself look pretty! I gotta do everything! My family is coming to LGA! AND I JUST REALIZED THIS AND I’M FREAKING OUT!”

“Um. Yeah, I’m gonna spend the night at Griselda’s. I’m so sorry.”

“No, no, have your way with the cute Pool sister, I- I just gotta, make sure everything is presentable! I just gotta- oh god oh god, look, have fun! Don’t lemme be a mess on you! Good night!” She hangs up.

Wow.

You carry Denise into Griselda’s dorm. “Make yourselves at home.”

Denise grumbles a little, yawning a bit. “Sorry for being so tired!” You put her down on the bed, and she immediately lays back and relaxes. “All that busywork today really knocked it outta me!”

“It’s fine,” says Griselda as she puts a platter of food into the microwave. “Just uh… make yourselves at home. I’ll get some blankets and pillows for you guys.” Her eyes widen a bit. “Oh, there’s some good news too. I got us a really rich sponsor to support the team today!”

“Really?” you ask. “Who?”

“Griffith Industries,” says Griselda. “They’re a Manufacturing company based out of Boston, one of the biggest for the US Army actually.” Oh. Oooohhh… “Did you want some tea or some soda or… something? A Japanese friend of mine introduced me to Darjeeling and lemme tell you, that is really good tea.”

Because Darjeeling doesn't make her own tea. Orange Pekoe does for her.

>>
> Just talk a little with Griselda, get to know her.

“Sure, some tea would be nice.” She smiles, walking over to the closet. “Getting yourself comfortable?”

“Yeah.” She throws off her jacket and starts unbuttoning her blouse as well. “I tell you, the heat out today was a killer. You know, I used to read stories about how the Afrika Korps would cook eggs and bacon on the hulls of their tanks because it was so hot.” She smirks a bit as she steps out of her skirt as well, showing off her pretty blue underwear. You and Denise try not to stare too much. And with that, Griselda pulls on a white Jersey with the number 34 and the name Harper on the back.

“You a baseball fan?” you ask.

“Huh?” She looks down at the jersey. “Oh, no, this is something I got from the Lerner’s sponsoring us. They own the Nationals down in DC.” Oh right. “I tell you what, I got a spares if you guys want some. I got a Clippard one which is functionally worthless since he doesn’t play for them any more. And for some reason…” She pulls out a jersey with the name Murphy on the back. “I don’t know who Murphy is but I’m not sure he’s on the Nationals.”

“Um, yeah. How about that tea?” you ask. She nods, walking over to the kitchen.

You and Denise sit at her coffee table next to her bed, which sits in front of the TV. “So uh… Griselda.” Denise smiles a little as she puts the kettle on. “What made you want to take up Tankery?”

Griselda looks back. “Honestly? My Dad used to take us to races and events. Gertrude always fell asleep because they were boring but I loved them. It grew from there.” The kettle starts whistling, ready. “Oooh, there’s the tea.”

“What’s your favorite tank?” you ask.

She sighs, pouring three cups of tea out. “Ah… you know, you’re going to be up all night because I have lots of favorite tanks.” She takes the cups onto a platter, then places them down in front of you, along with some cookies as well. “You know, I deeply admire the build of the T-34, not ergonomically, but from the context of the war situation it was a real lifesaver for the Soviets. And the Germans uh…”

“Tiger tank?” asks Denise.

Griselda rolls her eyes. “Tiger I is overrated.”

“What about the Tiger II?”

“Less overrated, but it has its problems too,” she says. “Panzer IV is the best one, next to the StuG III. And probably the Jagdpanther too. And its cousins the Marder series and the Nashorn.”

“Any American tanks?”

She shrugs. “Sherman, but the Chaffee’s cute.”

You smirk a bit. “That why you chose an M4 then?”

“Well, it’s cheap and I know it,” she says. She tugs on the collar of her jersey a bit, smiling at you two. You and Denise blush a little. Wow, that jersey honestly doesn’t leave too much to the imagination. “Really though, on the topic of my Dad though, wow. He’s the best Dad you could ever ask for.”

“Really?”

She nods. “Yeah, really.”
