Fumbling with getting the door into the Main Mining Lobby to work, sorry, voices.

While I do that, let's get to know each other at least. My memory is starting to come together now after waking up in a submarine and almost getting killed by a maneating octopus. How are you all?

Oh, so when I need actual company from my auditory hallucinations, you all are quiet as can be but when I don't need you guys, you all come crawling out of the woodwork.

That's just great. At least Secord over the radio would be nicer and I don't even know what he looks like.

I'm sorry, voice-that's-leaving-my-brain. The lack of coffee is getting to my nerves. You have fun.

>>47457067
I'm an Engineer, Stillwater is -or was- my security detail. We run an Auxiliary Sub for the Fleet, we do repair work, cargo hauling occasionally, salvage, maybe we get pulled into some xenoarchaeology or something. The works.

As for the sea life, this is a different planet. Meropis isn't exactly the Colony Station I grew up on, and it certainly isn't Earth. To be frank, I barely know most of the sea life here, most of my time is spent on the SCV-R Holland.

>>47457116

>lack of coffee

>>
>>47457207
I like the work, I like fumbling with wires and building things occasionally. Sometimes I get to dive and do salvage.

I don't like that my superiors refuse to invest in drones or new workers and thus keep me overworked. Then again, that's not particularly the reason I'm addicted to caffeine and coffee.

As for this place eh... I bet it was nice before things went to utter shit.

Wait, I got the door open, yes! Haha!

The door you see to the center is the lift door, which will work since it's powered by hydraulically. The other door probably leads into the Miner's lockerroom.

>>47457339
That's the central camera. Secord can track me using that.

The big hole in the floor is the Mine Shaft downwards into... wherever they were mining.

Also, I actually don't have anything that can produce light on me at the moment. In fact, my harness is basically full. I might need to dump something soon.

And ew, no. Glowstick arms? Fuck are you talking about?

Locker. Would you trust an elevator considering the condition of this place?
>>

>And ew, no. Glowstick arms? Fuck are you talking about?
You know, bioluminescent cells in your skin. Either you absorb ambient light then emit it over time later on, or you burn glucose in respiration and use the energy byproduct to glow. We didn't really have much time to have some heart-to-heart conversation, so I thought I may as well ask if you were any more unique than usual, what with your literal jade spheres and head embers.

Sit on the bench and catch your breath. It may help to remove most of the goop, and tighten your thermos just in case. It's more important that you're alive, unharmed, calm, and focused than whatever requires you to run around. The seal thing clearly isn't that scared of you, so it won't attack you, and it also clearly has no reason to eat you (assuming they DO eat people, which is unlikely).

They're called raft otters? They look cute. What's the spiney things on its back?

Well, besides the fact her submarine is on fire, there's a spooky monster in the sea, the base is flooded, everyone is dead except a mysterious person we're forced to trust via Morse code, there's a gloopy octopus monster, a 'swam' of something, she has every right to be stressed.

Oh, and not to mention the fact she just got rather intimate with a raft otter, who thankfully has non-aggressive intents. Of course she's stressed.

But yeah, if we could have some exposition that'd be greaaaat.

You've clearly never handled an Earth otter before. Those things are feisty, but no less huggable.

Think about snakes. Snakes are hard (so much muscle), thin, and lacking any real handholds. Doesn't make them any less cuddly.

Also, most aquatic animals that live out of water as well have fur that loses water very easily, as otherwise they'd be bogged down with weight (both whilst swimming and on land), and also to stop them from losing control of their body heat. Given this otter is in here, I assume it's been out of water for some time now.

Let me recap you, voice that apparently wasn't here for everything that happened a little while ago.

Me and my co-worker Stillwater were sent to Varuna Base to investigate and possibly salvage anything useful after SCV-R Holland lost contact with it six months ago. We were attacked by Skirmisher Crabs that filled our subs with darts that caused numerous hull breaches and set the engine on fire, which means the sub is useless.

Now, it's like the other voices say, I'm forced to rely on Secord who can only talk in Morse code. I was almost killed by one of those Octopus things, and now I'm having to find my way through Mining to get to Security where Secord is.

Fun day.

-

Also, upon trying the lock, the cabinet actually opens. Inside is a rebreather mask with built in oxygen cells, super light-weight, probably for emergencies.

I can't carry it with me now though since my inventory is full, not unless you want me to put it on, it's not exactly something I can see out of very well.

>>47458355

>>47458355
Raft Otters here on Meropis are... well, I and most people I know don't know much about them. They're carnivorous for sure, they actually prey on some of the octopus I've seen.

However, we call them raft otters because they build rafts out of big fish carcasses. We're not sure why, they just do.

Also, the spines are rumored to be poisonous. I'm not interested in finding out.

-

Well, that's it mostly. What do you want to do no- ah fuck, he's looking at me.
>>
Why the fuck do you fags have a quest here when you have your own quest board?

Because if you build rafts on an ocean world, you can stay above water. Raft otters appear to be mammals (especially by name), so they need gaseous oxygen to survive, as opposed to aqueous oxygen (as fish do). Moreover, if you're above water, you're safer. No big fish can see you up there. It also gives you a platform in which to store things for later, in case you get hungry.

They can dive deep by holding breath and swimming, I guess. I don't really know how deep 'deep' is, but quite a few aquatic mammals can dive deep, such as sperm whales. Even if it's not that sort of animal, seals can go quite far down, and they're pretty similar in anatomy.

They could do the penguin thing and hold air in their fur.

But I guess I'm over-analysing this loading screen. It's fun whilst we wait.

GS, you better give us Ottington McRaftstein as a companion. Fanservice is required for any serial media to survive.

Now there's an idea. I toss a bit of the snack cake over to him, and he immediately whips it up into his mouth and chews down on it. He lies low to the ground, looking up at me.

Alrighty then, that got his attention.

Let's see...
>>

A quick clicking noise with your tongue and begin walking him toward the octopus. Giving him some of the octogoop to keep him interested as you walk him to food you don't want to eat.

I have reflected on our memories, and come to the conclusion that we haven't established that you are a girl at all.
What are these other voices basing their assessments upon?
Are you a boy or a girl?
Or something else...
Come to think of it...
Are you even human?

Alrighty, Otty, there's your meal. That's your reward for not eating me. Go on, eat it.

Okay, you're getting a little sick. What do we do now, voices?
>>
>>47461103
Okay, okay, let's stay calm. Keep still. It obviously thinks something is wrong, but previously it had no reason to hurt you. If you remain the same as before, there can be no reason still to do so.

Continue blinking freely, as before. Spread your arms out on the floor, slowly. If it continues to not do anything, very slowly start wriggling away from it, in the direction from your feet to your head.

If it starts attacking, I'm going to be so sad that our friendship is over. Don't you dare, GS.

I don't know how intelligent Raft Otters are, but the violence could be a show of power. Even if you're currently not a threat, it wants to make sure that you'll never be through intimidation.

That, or it may be because octopuses fight back and so it's an instinct to be violent. Did he smash the flask or something in the locker room?

That... or he's just a messy eater. It's personality. You'll learn to love it in time.

Go eat your food.

>>

then go on ahead, flatly into danger
>>
>>47462020

So, you are debating jumping into the dark, lightless pool the otter is afraid of, with no light source of your own and no easy way back up? Do you recall what the captain said about swarmers busting through? If so, you need to find a battery and/or some long jumpers and shock the ever living shit out of that pool.
>>
>>47462020
Find object. Throw object into water. See what moves.
>>
>>47462164
>>47461792
>>47462020

> Go into vehicle area
> Acquire battery and disposable item
> Drop item into pool, see what comes up
> Drop battery at assembled mass of horror with leads rigged to contact when they hit the water.
> You get to enjoy an explosion and your otter gets to eat like a king
> Also, you get to explore with far less chance of getting eaten.
>>
>>47462317

Also, for a better monster lure.
> Grab audio log
> Grab rope
> Grab heavy, disposable item
> Tie object to the very end, audio log higher
> Turn on audio log at max volume and throw rope over the side
> Now you are monster fishing with sound and lights
> When the monsters come calling, blow them the fuck up

Recommended jamming device
> A piece of wood between one lead and the other metal contact
> When the heavy battery hits the water, the wood's bouyancy will carry it upward
> The spring like characteristics of the metal will then force the contact followed shortly by a detonation

Right then, voices. Here is my plan. I couldn't find any rope, or anything to cut the wood desk with, so I just decided to play it simple and get the car battery out.

Thankfully, when I dove in, nothing attacked me, so I was about to get it and the jump leads out with no problem.

Only thing that worries me is that these things have been submerged for about six months and I'm not sure they carry any electricity any more, but it's worth a shot.

The leads are linked up to the metal railing. And thanks to my SmartSkin I won't be in too much trouble if it accidentally conducts electricity through it. What we have now is some kind of bomb.

I'm sure all of my flapping and swimming about will have attracted something. All we do now is play the waiting game.

...

Already bored. Need coffee.

Is Ottington still agitated?
>>
>>47462992

>>
>>47462969

Always consult the voices, because I could have walked you through that one.

Around any office, you should have been able to find an extension cord, which would have acted as well as rope. For the wood, you just needed a chip of the desk, which you could have broken off by beating it with the crowbar. Even had that not been possible, you could have pried plastic or wall molding off of something.

Oh well. As for that bomb you're carrying, please make sure it goes off somewhere far away from you. Those are batteries rated for aquatic vehicles and not only likely still carrying a charge, but the sort that act as a primary source rather than conventional fossil fuel. With shockwaves traveling well in water, it will be dangerous for you to be near and in the water.

In a pinch, drop the audio log, probably also water proofed, and the connected bomb. The light and sound ought to cause the fish to swarm toward that rather than you for long enough to get the battery bomb off.

Actually, idea. The lift in the center of the room is mechanically powered. I could just send the battery through there and have it blow up when the doors open. But your idea, I do like your idea.

D-... do I drop the bomb now or...?
>>
>>47463682
Now or never. Might want to go to another room afterward
>>
>>47463682

You need them to swarm first. Alright, so remember that thing I told you about the extension cable? Now might be a good time if it isn't too far away. Hell, knotted together seatbelts with a buckle at the end could work.

Your goal here is the same as a fisherman. You want to entice them to take your bait. You do that by bringing noise, light, and motion close to the water. The thermos with the octo juice could make a good lure actually.

Once they are enticed, you take the battery, now smeared in octogoo, cross the leads and drop it. By this point, your prey has a taste for the goo, and to their eyes, the dropping battery is going to be like a huge catch suddenly handed to them. They'll all swarm it.

And then they die. Again, this battery was a primary source on vehicles that should have been designed to withstand moisture. It should still have enough juice to nuke the little bastards.
>>
>>47463682

BRING IT DOWN
>>
>>47463781

If you absolutely can't wait though, throw down some goo on the battery and then at the surface of the water to get them circling.

You want them swarming, packed into a tight location so the shockwave will hit all of them. Then you want to bring them down.
