Recently: You and Geno stormed the security office to stop a Team Imperium infiltration.

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat involves rolls! Once there's a clear vote winner, we roll for the move accuracy/crit/secondary effect. Usually it's just three 1d100s. Sometimes you can get a modifier from circumstances, so be creative! Add flair, do tricks with moves, mess with terrain, whatever! This is not a video game. Weak moves tend to be quicker.

Call me out on a mistake and receive an apology butt or suggestive picture.

You and Geno have stormed the security room and captured the Team Imperium members that were infiltrating. The real security has come in just in time to see you holding the fake security off. It looks every bit like a hostage situation.

“Put your Pokemon away, and your hands up.”

A few Growlithes and Mr. Mimes take position beside the security guards.

“Of course, we’ll happily surrender and expl-” Geno istops himself when he notices one of the guards that came is also a Team Imperium member. He takes a second to think.

The guards get antsy. “I won’t ask again.”

>Point the member out to the real guards.
>Attack the Team Imperium guard. Let them take you in after.
>Surrender. You can slyly mention it to the legit guards before the TI member can do anything, right?
>Let Geno speak. He’s the respected Elite Four leader

Geno throws up his hands. “We can explain. But it’s important that you all very carefully...”

“He’s got a gun!” One of the hostage members yells before trying to tackle Geno from behind. He quickly spins around and pins them in an armlock. The guards all scramble and two Mr. Mime’s use Thunder Wave, but Altaria uses Safeguard.

“I do not, and I’ll gladly surrender, but you need to listen to me,” Geno keeps a firm hold on the guard. “Step away from that man,” he points to the guard. “Now!” They slowly comply, thinking this is a hostage problem. “There has been an infiltration.”

They seem skeptical, but willing to hear him out. He makes a few good points about the men not being on the register. He even has one of the legitimate guards step inside and use the computer system to check the registrations of the men there. By now, the real police are here as well.

They arrest the fake guards one at a time.

“We’ll need to take you into custody for questioning.” Geno agrees. He retrieves his Altaria and surrenders.

“You too,” the police officer points to you. “It could take a few days.”

Geno winces. “She has an important league match coming up. She needs to train.”

“That’s not my problem.”

Damnit! Maybe you can call in a favor?

Yeah, beating Violet is really more a part of robin's story than ours. We've made a name for ourselves, become independent, gathered a family...

Worst comes to worst we personally know some top-tier trainers like Clair who can at least keep our pokemon sharp for us.

We've been training for this a long time. A few days shouldn't matter too much.

I'm fine with that, it's more that we're making a completely uninformed choice and I don't know how we'd become more informed. Like for starters, I don't think we can talk to the officers arresting us at all.

You surrender for now.

“I’m sorry, Kat. This isn’t how I thought it would go. Such a treatment for stopping a plot like this isn’t how it should have gone. I’m positive this long term questioning isn’t legal, unless they’re trying to use some sort of legal loophole.”

“It’s okay, I have a plan.”

“Good. Good. If for whatever reason it doesn’t work out, I’m at your disposal.”

You’re taken into custody and your Pokemon are confiscated. You really, really don’t like that. The officer in charge assures you they’ll be treated well and returned.

You’ve been listening closely and waiting for any questions they might have about your friends. They have nothing to ask about Jeanine and Robin, but they do have questions about Clair and Vance.Everyone is safe. Apparently they stumbled onto a huge stash of Voltorbs and Electrodes though. You can honestly say you don’t know anything about that.

Finally, you’re allowed to make a call. You dial up the agent you’ve dealt with before.

“Kat, baby. I don’t know if I want to strangle you or kiss you. This is going to blow up big time.”

You explain that you’d really like to get out to train.

“Well... I know some really good lawyers and the right people who can move things like this quickly, but we’ll need to put the right spin on this. And the studio will want something in return.” He lays out a few options. “And if those don’t work for you, I think they’ll rev up some bad girl type merchandise and make your public image into that punk that everybody loves to hate.”

My brain wants us to meditate for some introspection and well-deserved downtime - meditation can be useful, even if there is a risk with Kat's state of mind that it'll backfire.
My heart wants us to do whatever we can to get out so we maximum train and get in tip top shape and be the best we can.
My dick wants bikini Kat.

>>47635301
That's a good point actually. I like it for Kat's part, but it's really kind of unfair to Robin (and our other friends, but they don't have important matches coming.
>>
If modeling wins, it'll certainly be interesting to see their reaction to all of Kat's scars. Wonder if they'll want to cover them up.

Also, honestly, I think if anything needs to be polished back to top state it is probably Kat's mind rather than her pokemon.

If they ask her to cover them up (or just start to without comment) we should insist on not letting them.

Maybe slightly tone down the worst ones at most, but not obscuring any. Just explain that Kat fans will love them anyway. Besides, it's not like Kat's unattractive whether scars or no scars.

[Let's just be safe, since both training and mental state and public image will all still be relevant again at later points in the quest.

“Fine, I’ll do the bikini modelling.”

“Babe, you won’t regret this! This sort of exposure will do wonders, miracles for your career.”

“Yeah huh. You remember how old I am, right?”

You hear laughter on the other side of the phone. “Welcome to showbiz, kid. Now hang tight. My people will make some calls and they’ll have you out in no time. We’ll need you for the afternoon tomorrow.”

True to his word, it doesn’t take any time at all before you’re set free. You get another call from the lawyer assuring you things will be fine, and that all you have to do is just not talk about the incident while they sort it out. Apparently the arresting officer feels very differently than you about the whole Lapras reserve thing, which is why he pushed the boundaries on how long they can hold you.

Upon release, you’re swamped by your friends.

Robin nearly takes the air out of you. Clair gives you a hug, claiming that if she didn’t, you’d probably cry or something gay like that, you emotional dyke, you. Jeanine and Vance offer a hug next.

You all exchange notes on what happened. Clair and Vance go over the Voltorb and Electrode’s they found. “The league is trying to hush it all up. But security should be a lot tighter.”

There’s still a small amount of time in the day. It’ll be five days until Robin fights Violet.

“A-actually, I wanted to talk to you about that,” Robin takes you aside. “I’ve been checking with the rules...and m-...Violet, and she says she’d be willing to fight you first, or both of us at the same time. How do you feel about that?”

You remember Clair’s words about how she thinks Robin would reveal too many tricks to beat both of you in a row. You don’t know how true that is though.

You hold her hands and look her right in her eyes. One fake, one real. It’s no longer something you look at and feel guilty about. It’s just another one of her cute charms now. “You should battle her.”

“B-but...”

“I know you can do this. Kick her ass, and then we can fight it out for the championship.”

Robin nods. “Okay!”

Clair gives an exaggerated yawn. “So to the more important topic, how big is this bikini going to be?”

You have no idea.

“Maybe they’ll let us...err...you pick” Robin says, fidgeting her fingers together.

You start walking back to the hotel. It’s been an eventful day, but it’s not used up yet. How will you spend the rest of it?

I agree, he's done a great job writing this whole quest.

But to break out the theorizing, you're assuming she's not supporting them. They had to have inside info on the league somehow. I bet she's pretending to be on their side so that we're forced to have a "real" battle with her. That's what it would take for Hornbeam to feel this confident, and to be a real threat.

You take out Meloetta. “Come on. Let’s have a fun evening, just you and me.”

She makes a cute noise and clasps her hands together.

“I’m going to train,” Robin says. She has that very rarely seen confident smile. Don’t slack off. I want to battle you in top shape.”

Oh sweet mercy why is that so sexy when Robin does it? Is it because it's’ so rare? You smile back. “Don’t worry, I won’t hold back!” You walk away with Meloetta.

Despite what you just said, you’re going to do no training for the rest of the day. Meloetta comes first.

You take her to get some juice first, which she eagerly sips down. She’s very proud that she can use the straw all by herself. You pat her on the head. She eagerly drinks and then helps some of the workers draw up more chalk drawings for their specials tomorrow. You try to ignore all the people looking at you and whispering.

You wander around a bit and see a 24/7 Pokemon private clinic. The sign promises specialists of all sorts. Meloetta pulls your arm and points to a karaoke bar. Across the street is some sort of onsen bathhouse with a bunch of amenities. It promises to relax.

On the one hand it feels like we're avoiding the issue, on the other I don't think it can be further addressed today. This is why pampering Meloetta was a bad idea by the way. I don't think we're ready to deal with it since she lost her voice (because of us) earlier today and I don't' know if Kat agrees with Geno's advice.

You take her to the karaoke bar. She puts in incredibly admirable restraint not to just fly up to the mic right away. You and her sit down and go over songs for awhile until you choose a few. At first, you do a duet with her. She seems to do well enough for now. There’s a slight rasp in her voice, but she’s not pushing it. The people watching all applaud and cheer as she carries the tune of the song and you fill in some lyrics. You weren’t really feeling it before you came up here and was just making sure she wasn’t alone in case anything happened, but she doesn’t seem to need it.

You let some other people go, then you go up, then let other people go some more. She’s really pounding back those juice boxes, but her spirits are way up. You figure it’s time to call it a night, but she insists on one more song she wants to do with you. It’s one of your favorites. https://www.youtube.com/watch?x-yt-ts=1422579428&v=YW9QKy6oDkE&x-yt-cl=8511440

She looks up at you, giving her most adorable pouty face. A few people and Pokemon in the crowd that have been enjoying the rare treat of a legendary Pokemon known for it’s musical talent cheer you on.

Aria has been singing for awhile, but she seems to not be able to give the exact performance she’s aiming for. Her voice isn’t reaching the high and low notes the way you know she wants them to, and she’s getting a little upset about it. She feels she could nail this song right now though, if given a shot.

“That’s it for us. You guys have been great.” You wave as you go off stage.

You figure it’s best to take her to the specialist. Her voice has been breaking slightly more as the night goes on, and you’re worried about pushing it too far.

She pouts hard as you take her out of the Karaoke bar. She looks a bit crushed. You can’t tell if that’s because she just really wanted to do that one last song, or if she feels you don’t trust her judgement.

“I know you're upset, but there are times when it’s best to just call it quits for now.”

She contemplates your words.

You arrive in the clinic and check in. The receptionist calls up the doctor that specializes in vocal cords and other related issues, but he’s heading out. “My shifts done. Don’t ca-” he stops as he’s about to walk past. “Is that...a Meloetta?” He takes out a stethoscope. “Don’t just stand there. Come on. To my office.”

You explain about her voice. Aria looks down and her dangling feet as you describe her hurt voice.

“And you just took her to a karaoke bar?” He doesn’t hide the judgement in his voice.

“I was worried about her state of mind.”

He eyes you up and down, but accepts your answer for now. He inspects her throat for awhile in silence.

“Beautiful. Just beautiful.” He offers her a lolipop. She cautiously tries it, then brightens up at the taste. It’s like solid juice! “I’ve got a few different options. One, is that she just doesn’t talk for the next few days or do any strenuous activities at all. That includes even light training combined with this medicine, she should hopefully be fine after that, as long as you don't do a repeat of pushing it in the fight itself.”

You nod.

“Second, is that you take it easy on any vocals, but train all you want. Then when you battle, take a teaspoon of this and she’ll be fine for that battle. She’ll take much longer to recover, though. There also carries a small...5% chance she’ll still have some raspiness or other minor change.”

You nod again.

“Third, is that you take this once a day for the next week,” he lifts another bottle. “Her voice will heal quickly with the same raspiness it is right now, maybe a little more, but it should actually be stronger when it comes to battling.”

You look to Aria. She’s conflicted. She pushed herself hard to prove she’s a serious battler, but would she be willing to permanently change her voice for future fights?

She looks to you for advice.

“It’s your choice, I don’t-”

She starts doing eeny, meeny, miny, moe.

“You’re her trainer,” the doctor tells you. “This sort of choice is what you’re supposed to help her with.”

It seems like as hard on ourselves as we were with Devon, we're taking Aria's injury a lot worse.

You pat her on the head and encourage the first option. “It’s important that you recover as much as you can.”

The doctor goes over the instructions. It’s simple enough. Aria should take it easy for the next few days, take the medicine daily, and not use her voice. She really doesn’t like that, but she goes along with it when you promise to take her out for more karaoke when she recovers.

You start to walk back to the hotel.

She makes a few gestures. Despite not being able to vocalize, her question is clear. She pushed herself during her fight with Geno, and you let her, but do you regret it? Was she wrong to do it?

You think about what Geno said. He thought it was noble for a Pokemon to want to go beyond their limits and reach new heights. He feels it’s important to encourage growth, and that real growth comes with risks.

Vernon might say it’s wrong to push a Pokemon. He pushed his Pokemon too far and regrets it.

You’re still not sure how you feel. What’s the right answer? Is there one? Is it always just dependent on context?

You think back about Devon’s scar and feel a pang of regret. At the same time, he wanted to protect your dreams. He wanted to do more. Is it your duty as a trainer to stop your Pokemon in those scenarios, or encourage them? Where’s the cut off point? Is Aria's situation different, or the same?

>She shouldn’t push herself like that in the future. You’re sorry you let her get hurt, and you won't let it happen again.

I don't know, I really don't feel like it was worth it. Like even if it was really improbable, even if we wouldn't have pulled out a win vs Genos... so what? Is a chance to fight Violet and maybe Robin on televion with increased status and so on really worth it?

I really don't think there's an easy answer to this. There definitely isn't a universal one. Especially if our position is that there are times that taking risks is worth it. Because there are definitely times when pushing it to the limit all the time is NOT the best option at all. So we need to decide when it is or isn't okay.

“I’m proud of you for pushing yourself.” You pat her. “I think it’s important for everyone to try their best. I’ll support you if you want to do that.”

You both arrive back at the hotel just as Robin and the others get there too. Robin was out late, training hard. She was battling all three of the others at the same time to condition her Pokemon to keep their spirits up when it feels unfair, and to train herself to try to be aware of a lot of moving parts on the field.

You hit the sack and wake up the next morning. You’ll have that shoot later on today, but the first half of the day is all yours.

There’s a message from the front desk. Geno and the other elite four members say you’re welcome to join them in their private training gym if you’d like. Cliff emphasized that there’s no pressure if you have your own plans.

You’ve gotten incredibly lucky with the consequences of letting your Pokemon go beyond their limits twice now. Luck doesn’t hold out forever. Now that you’ve told Aria you’ll let her push herself, and that Devon knows it, all the others are going to assume it’s fine. If you don’t let them, they’ll stop believing that you believe in them. They’ll think you’re a liar that just tells them whatever they want to hear. If you do let them, you know your luck won’t hold a third time. They’ll get hurt. Permanently and badly.” She laughs. “It’s a beautiful little bind you’ve put yourself in.”

Bitch.

“You know it! You’re going to tell yourself that I’m just being cynical and trying to bring you down because you’re not allowed to be entirely certain or happy. But you also know that on some level you believe everything I just said.”

“You ARE being cynical,” you think.

“I guess we’ll see the next time it comes up.” She vanishes.

Clair looks at you, confused. “Did you say something?”

Are you really that dumb? We got lucky both times. With Devon we rolled really low on the injury table and with Meloetta we had two positive criticals.

How is this hard to understand, pokemon can ordinarily just shrug off an obscene amount of damage like being lit on fire or tackled by something three times their size and made of metal, but well trained pokemon can keep battling even though they're pretty much in-between 0 and 1 HP. The price of that is that whatever poke-magic lets them suffer damage in JRPG terms wears off, and instead they take injuries like they're livng things.

This was pretty much explicetly stated by Gobble. Twice. You fucking stupid fucking idiot.

Like he clearly said that with Devon and Aria it could have been MUCH worse.

Do you honestly believe that she's lying? Do you really think that Devon having a little scar, and Meloetta having some vocal problems was really the absolute worst that could have happened? Have you seriously been paying so little attention that you don't think this is a real mechanic that Gobble has introduced, and still think that we're operating off pure game logic?

Gobble, I feel like you need to Word of God this one, because these guys just aren't getting it.

That's not what any of them are saying you fucking sperg. They're saying that none of our Pokemon have, thus far, been in any kind of "holy shit they might actually fucking die from this." Of course, you'd know this, if you actually bothered to read their fucking posts.

She's not right about our pokemon losing faith in us if we put our foot down. We narrowly allowed ourselves a loophole with
>We weigh the risks against the rewards, and sometimes it'll be better to take those risks and sometimes it won't.”
Which means that we've already established that some risks aren't worth taking.

But as for us being lucky both times? That's... actually canon. Gobble made posts about it and everything. I really don't know why you guys aren't acknowedging that at all.

There have been so many threads it's hard to remember them all
>>

Just checked #82, she pulled Other Kat out of Hornbeam's head and asked why there were two of us but never followed up on it.
>>

But neither fucking time it happened it's actually been life our death. Sure if we hadn't pushed Devon, we might not have entered the championship round, and maybe if we hadn't pushed Aria, we wouldn't have beaten Genos. But they were still just matches for sport. What I'm worried about is when we fight Violet or even Robin, anons are gonna interpret that as a life or death situation.
>>
>>47639011
To be fair, Violet might turn our battle into life or death.
>>
This is what retrospection is for, right? We know we got lucky. Kat's calling herself out. It's time to plan on what choices we'll make later. Our pokemon trust us and we should recognize that means that they want us to use our best judgement.

“Clair, can I tell you something private?”

She laughs and taps her head. “You can, but it’d be a waste of time.”

“Well, you know that other voice in my head?”

“Everyone has other voices in their head. That’s normal.”

“I mean, that weird one. That dark thing I used when Selina was in my head?”

Clair glances sideways. “Kind of. Not going to lie, that was weird. But Selina wasn’t well trained and she never really learned how to filter the emotions side of things. She probably just opened a door to a really upset memory or something. Before you get all paranoid though, keep in mind that we all have little dark spots in our head. Concentrations of self-doubt and loathing. Remember when we first met and I had that...ugliness?”

“So I’m normal?”

“Pshh, no. You’re a huge slutty dyke that never listens to anyone. But whatever you think is wrong with you probably isn’t anything to worry about. Mental phantasms crawl around in heads. They act like NPC’s in video-games, just giving one or two different lines to emphasize why they’re floating in your head.”

“Even if she comes out and talks to me in the middle of the day?”

Clair hesitates. “Like...you see her? And she can hold an actually conversation? Complicated thoughts beyond just 'you suck'?”

“Y-yeah...”

“She’s been around for a long time, hasn’t she?”

You nod.

“Want me to check it out?” She taps her temple.

>>
>>47638963
I'm pretty sure Gobble said that death was, while monumentally unlikely, still technically possible as a result of getting a bad enough roll.

But I guess even crippling is bad enough. Like what if Devon couldn't see out of one eye, or Zappy Dan's antennae snapped off, or anything like that.

>>47639034
Nothing about Violet's MO indicates that she'd do something to permanently injure our pokemon. In fact, if we did place our own pokemon at risk of permanent injury, she seems likely to suspend the match to beat us to death with her bare hands.
>>

>>

Technically true. But that proves my point. Even if it was unlikely we were warned that it was possible. And if Genos had gotten a crit, it would have been even worse. And yet we did it anyway. And I've seen zero indication that we wouldn't do the same thing again and again if given the chance, which I find horrible.
>>47639172
It's funny how these guys think that it's impossible that two people could feel the same way on the matter.
>>
>>47639172
And that's definitely wrong, when there's important shit on the line the last thing we need is to hesitate. It's not a personal failing just because your option didn't win.
>>
>>47639157
We should probably figure out what she is before we go trusting her like that. For all we know getting our megas back from the hands of our schizophrenic illusion won't fix things. We've sort of been putting this off for a while. At least since we talked to that child psychologist.
>>
>>47639166
Nah, she's been a dick for a while now. I half expect it to be Hornbeam messing with us (lately at least). She's been really inconsistent.
>>
>>47639232
What important shit though?

Like unlike the other guy, I'll concede that when it comes to stopping Hornbeam from activating his doomsday device, then yeah risking our pokemon is worth it. But Genos wasn't worth it. Violet won't be worth it. And Robin REALLY won't be worth it.

Can you honestly give me a single goddamn reason why risking permanent injury on the part of our pokemon would be worth beating Violet?
>>
>>47639243
When did she first show up? I think it was before we really got on Hornbeam's personal shit-list.
>>
>>47639077
>No, but let’s talk about it later, if she doesn’t mind
She's been with me for years. It will keep.
>>
>>47639243
Because just when she was feeling like she could rejoin us or whatever, we just kept fucking up.
>>
>>47639259
Dark Kat showed up before Hornbeam turned out to be mad scientist.
>>
>>47639259
Right after catching destiny I think.
>>
>>47639259
She started when that one goon made a pokemon use nightmare on us.

Also, what i was suggesting was that Hornbeam's responsible for her going hostile again recently or at least it's his fault that she can go visible now.
>>
>>47639293
I feel like it's more just the stress of the situation is getting to Kat, with Aria being the last straw.
>>
>>47639253
For one thing, I freely admit that I agree with Geno that if our Pokemon wants to do it, we should have faith in them and let them go for it. I admit that's an arguable point though, so to answer your question I think it would be worth it because Violet is a complete psycho and we need to show her that her entire philosophy is wrong. Unfortunately, because she's fucking crazy I'm pretty sure the only way we can do that is to beat her, and I fully expect that the only way we can beat her is if we give it everything we have and then some.

>Like what if Devon couldn't see out of one eye

What if Devon had to get a cyber-eye you say?

Battle Scars are just that. A side effect of getting hurt in battle over time. It's definitely going to happen. 100% certainty over time.
If you're terrified that Zappy Dan will lose an antennae, you probably shouldn't put him into death combat nearly so often.

Even if you sit them on a farm for the rest of their days, they're going to grow old and die, no matter what you do.

Curling up in a corner because something bad might happen is worse than doing things and handling the situation when it does happen.

We might have to retire one or more of our pokemon due to injury in our upcoming fights. Does that mean you should quit now, just because something might happen?
>>
>>47639325
She went visible when we were training with Devon and pushed ourselves a bit too far. Gobble said we rolled high enough to avoid bad consequences.
>>
>>47639347
Not sure I agree with being so blase about it, but by and large I can get behind the sentiment. Risk and hardship are reasons to fight, not reasons to roll over and quit.
>>
>>47639332
Her philosophy is that people mistreat their pokemon for selfish reasons. Pushing our pokemon to the point of crippling injury to beat her not only doesn't prove Violet wrong, it's fucking insane.
>>
>>47639332
Her philosophy is that people mistreat their pokemon for selfish reasons. Pushing our pokemon to the point of crippling injury to beat her not only doesn't prove Violet wrong, it's fucking insane.

>>47639347
Except it's not 100% certainty at all. Normally pokemon won't suffer any permanent consequences from getting frozen solid or electrocuted or whatever. It's a very deliberate choice on our part to keep them going even after their invulnerablity wears off, and your denial of that is honestly disgusting.

>>47639455
Shit, thought that that last post didn't go through.
>>
>>47639434
>Pushing our pokemon to the point of crippling injury
You say that like we're deliberately out to cripple them, which is frankly dishonest. What we're doing is accepting one of the risks of battling at the top, not inflicting pain on our team for kicks. And I feel like that's one of our biggest points against her, we need to show Violet that our team love and accept us despite the risks of pushing themselves, and that even if we're taking risks that's not the same thing as abuse.
>>
>>47638770
>Word of God
Go back to tv tropes.
>>
>>47639347

You are an idiots, ask anyone that's had half their skin burned off, lost an arm or leg, who deals with PTSD ever single day if they would rather be whole, if they had eaten a slice of humble pie. Guess what their will be, not being fucking injured.

HINT PEOPLE PRIDE WILL GET OUR POKEMON KILLED.
>>
>>47639494
But one of her less insane points is that pokemon have so much belief in their trainer that their judgment can't be trusted in matters like this. Whether you think it's conditioning or not, they care so much for their trainer that they won't admit defeat. And so far that has been 100% accurate, and we've only put our foot down one out of three times. So no, I don't think we'd be proving anything at all by getting our pokemon critically injured fighting her.

And no I don't think you guys are accepting the risks, or if you are, I don't think you're doing a good job at weighing them.

“Yes please.”

She drags you by the hand to a bunch somewhere semi-private and sits you down.

“Look, last time I saw her, I thought it was weird, but just your mind being a little leaky because of everything going on in that pickled perverted goopile you call a brain. You shrugged, so I let it go. Minds get leaky when too many people step into them too often, but they seal back up after some sleep.”

“Dark Kat isn’t really like that.”

“Yeah,” Clair says annoyed. “I can tell. You even gave her a name. Now shut up and tell me where to find her.”

You’re suddenly transported to the inside of your mind. Last time, it was a frankenstein building that was mostly the orphanage and the woods you grew up in. That’s still there, but much larger parts of the building are your hotel, your tent, and Vernon’s place. There’s a small cubby of Vance’s parent’s house in the corner. You weren’t there long, but it felt very homey.

“Lots of renovations,” Clair comments. “Which way?” You notice that she’s flat in here.

You shrug.

“Ugh. Think about it. You know which way if you really try.”

You give her an annoyed look, but you let it go. She gets this way when she’s worried. You think about where Dark Kat would be. Doors slowly open in the home of your mind, and you and Clair follow them. You find her at the hotel room in the shower.

“Makes sense. Lots of people reflect in the shower. And you’d be doing that since we haven’t been showering together much lately.”

There's a small pattern instead of the usual wallpaper. It's a repeating pattern of the scar on Devon. A quiet echo of Aria's humming can be heard in the distance.

(continued)
>>
>>47639543
I disagree that we're not weighing them properly in the sense that I think we've generally been doing a pretty good job in the short voting periods that we have, but I'm willing to concede that we haven't been doing as well as we possibly could have. I still don't regret letting Aria push herself though, I think she would have been miserable and we stood a good chance at losing the fight if we'd done that. We definitely haven't been cool-headed about it, but given the constraints we're operating under I think we've generally made a decent go of it.
>>
I don't see what the issue is here honestly with the "indecision" that people are saying. We clearly have/had options in the fight to bring back clearly tired and injured pokemon but refuse to bring them back believing that they can pull off a miracle.

I'm not the other anon but can anyone actually give me an argument about why we won't pull back our injured pokemon. Don't give me something like "but they believe in us" when clearly that just leads to them throwing themselves into danger. I'm honestly curious as to why we haven't been more cautious in the late end of the fights.
>>
>>47639655
With Aria I feel like that due to Genos kind of getting in Aria's head, and us not listening, even if her weakness was almost certainly gonna be that her desire to prove herself can make her reckless.

Clair looks very, very concerned. “Who...what are you?”

Dark Kat slowly grows little fangs. “Kat... you’re going to get your friend hurt. Go away.”

Clair stands firm, but you can see a bead of sweat on her. “Okay, so you’re a little active. That’s fine. Mine was too. That’s common in psychics. Lots of swirling thoughts from all over can form these things.”

“But I’m not psychic.”

Clair nods. “No, you’re not. You have like, virtually no potential for it.”

“Or aura reading, or much of anything else special,” Dark Kat adds. “This isn’t a friendly place for psychics. Leave.”

Clair moves forward. “It’s okay. You’re a good person.”

“That won’t work,” Dark Kat warns. “Just because it worked for you, doesn’t mean that works here, you conceited bitch! This is why you're the second banana to Robin and I. You're just a pathetic little toy for us because we feel sorry for you.”

“I know you don’t mean that,” Clair steps forward. “You’re not evil. You’re a good person.”

Because if we had been more cautious against Emma, for all we knew we might have lost her help for Robin's surgery. It turned out she was just jerking our chain, but at the time we couldn't know that. I think that's generally the point; under fairly strict time constraints with limited information, so far it's usually been in our best interest to let our team push themselves and go for it. That doesn't mean we ought to do it every time or that it's always the solution, but wallowing in cynicism and accusations like >>47639730 is doing doesn't help anything either. Basically, I think we've fucked up a little bit as well but that doesn't excuse all the shit-flinging that's been going on in the past however many threads.

The only reason we "fucked up" was because of dice.

Aria wanted to keep going, we let her. We've moved on, she's feeling better.

Geno provided good advice on this exact subject. People are starting to willfully ignore it in favor of moaning about how we should feel bad.

looking forward to talking and flirting and more talking! Honestly, half the reason I read the smutbins is for the character development.

>>47639851
Geno isn't the end-all be-all on the subject. In fact, considering he's the one who thought resurrecting Team Imperium in the first place was a good idea, I'm not sure why his judgment is trusted at all except that it aligns with what results in anons adopting the least amount of fault.
And we clearly haven't moved on as seen by inside Kat's head right fucking now. And even if it was due to dice, we were warned previously that bad dice (or good dice for Geno) would have had very bad consequences for Aria but we chose to continue anyway.

My stance is that some things just shouldn't be gambled with, at least not for stakes as paltry as it has been.

I didn't say that, I think that shit's just as annoying and needs to go if there's going to be any productive discussion here. That being said, the "don't risk it" crowd has been just as persistently shitty for a much longer time, so I have very little sympathy in that regard.

Thanks for running Gobble! Episodes like these really drive home what I love about quests. I get a pit in my stomach when things get scary because I get to participate in dealing with the problem! No other medium puts responsibility into my hands, no redos. Even tabletop modules can be run again, but I've never seen a long quest run twice.

'Night guys.

>>47639796
>What you're playing dumb to is the fact that every time our pokemon is at the risk of getting critically injured that's because we made a conscious decision to vote that whatever we get from winning is worth risking them getting really fucked up.

And there's always been the chance that nothing bad would come out of it. Plus the potential for long term injury or death. Risk and Reward are intertwined.

And the difference between you, and the people willing to risk more and put it all out?
People who want to be overly cautious don't make the strong arguments. People willing to go insane and push the boundaries can win votes and the popular vote more easily. People who want to hold back at the first sign of trouble tend not to convince other people to NOT do the more interesting, exciting, and crazy things that main characters are known for.

So I know multiple people are terrified that Devon will lose limbs, or Nibbles won't wake up from some terrible hit to the head. I even almost feel for them.

But I'm not going to side with caution when it comes time to go HAM.
>>
>>47639961
>>
>>47639998
So... you're a a fucking asshole who isn't even attemtpting to try and put yourself in the protagonist's shoes when making decisions? And since you're not bothering to invest yourself in the quest you can push through hotblooded options because you don't give a shit about the aftermath?

Well fuck you right back at you.
>>
>>47640045
Please stop shooting everyone that wants to play moderately in the foot.
>>
>>47640067
That's not moderate though. That's the embodiment of "let's keep going and see what happens", that's the other extreme that I honestly didn't think existed. I thought people were just bad at assessing risks or were under pressure, instead this guy at least is encouraging taking risks for shitty reasons just because it meets some standard of "badass". That's retarded.
>>
>>47640038
Man I love you Gobble.

>you're not bothering to invest yourself in the quest you can push through hotblooded options because you don't give a shit about the aftermath?
>>47640099
>instead this guy at least is encouraging taking risks for shitty reasons just because it meets some standard of "badass".

The aftermath is the most fun part.
Hotblooded options get through because they're the best for the story and the character. Kat's behavior has always been erratic tending towards violence.

If she was a nurse, then you could probably make the argument that she wouldn't do things like that.
But she's a pickpocket and a liar. She's dark and poison type and angry. She's just as likely to punch a guy in the dick as she is to jump into the way of an arrow heading for her friends.

If you want her to be a more level headed person who makes good decisions under pressure, you're going to have to get way better at convincing people to agree with you.

Probably without calling everyone who disagrees you retarded. That could hurt your stance too.
>>
>>47640099
I said "those who wish to play moderately" not because it's the side you replied to, but because your attempts at arguing are so poor that they're actively damaging to others that want the same thing.
>>
>>47640153
Well, I guess my argument is that there is a monumental difference between putting your own skin on the line and that of your pokemon. There is zero disagreement on my part that Kat is the kind of person to take big risks and make impulsive and violent decisions. However, to me it's also true that she loves her pokemon WAY more than she loves herself. So to me, the idea of her pokemon risking actual damage for the sake of her pride is something Kat would NEVER accept, and I've yet to be presented a convincing reason to see otherwise. You're going to have to sell me on the idea that Kat loves her pokemon a lot less than has been previously indicated, as well as just ignore the actual content of the quest itself when it seems like these decisions are something that Kat deeply regrets deep down to the point of it eating her alive.
>>
>>47640201
Fundamentally because the pokemon she trains with don't give indications of wanting to pull back in the fights. There are pokemon that don't wish to fight, and there are pokemon that want to push themselves for us. If we had a pokemon that didn't want to fight, we would pull them out in a second.

When we let the pokemon push themselves, we both have to deal with the after effects. The celebration and failures that occur are all part of the package of trusting them to trust us to trust them.

Regret is part of the package. Are we going to screw up? Yes. Is it always going to turn out great? No.
Is is sometimes going to go greater than we ever imagined complete with drinking parties?

And that's why, as you put it, the hotblood responses get the backing in the end. Failure, even massive failure, is included in the calculation.

Would she love her pokemon so much she would stop them from doing what they want to do for her?
The conflict is part of the story. Dark Kat gets fed because of that conflict, and while it would be nice to integrate her with the whole, the entire self loathing cycle is a given.

Either we get to regret not stopping them from pushing themselves too hard, or we regret pulling them out when they could go on further.
>>
>>47640317
Thanks for summing it up nicely anon.
>>
>>47640317
I don't think we have any pokemon who wouldn't want to push themselves if they could though. Like as a result of how we trained and cared for them, they feel like they owe us to give it their all. The whole point of training pokemon in the first place is that there will be times when we know better than they do. And yet you seem to be unwilling to concede that there will ever be a time when we should tell them to stop, and try to blur the issue with
>Is is sometimes going to go greater than we ever imagined complete with drinking parties?
Which... no. No that will never happen as a result of a critical injury role. At best it'll just be relief that we got lucky yet again mixed with regret that we put them in that situation in the first place.

I really do not think you're viewing this situation honestly, and are just adopting this weird almost fatalistic mindset because it justifies not trying to change at all.
>>
I think the salty anon needs to realize that it's better to get hurt fighting for something you love then to live the rest of your days regretting not having given it everything you have.
>>
>>47640492
I don't really think they would spend the rest of their lives regretting it though. Because they would trust our judgment as they have in the past. At least I'd hope you're talking about our pokemon, because they're the ones who would actually get hurt.
>>
>>47640383
>I really do not think you're viewing this situation honestly, and are just adopting this weird almost fatalistic mindset because it justifies not trying to change at all.

And you seem to have adopted a defeatist mindset that would be better suited to running a moderately successful pokemon farm than high end battle.

The entire basis of our style of mega evolution derives from adapting to the mindset of our pokemon. And yes, we care for them, but we're not mind controlling them. We're fighting in a tournament. They want to do their best, we want them to do their best. We all want them to do their best. (In this case I'm talking about the anons also)

If you want people to make a change, you're going to have to wade into those last second decisions, and come up with the brilliant plan that convinces others to do something better.

Pouting with indecisiveness after the fact isn't going to go very far.

If one of our pokemon wants to tap out, it's their call. We've trained them to be among the best of the best. We'll do what we can to protect them, and guide them where we can. But if Aria wants to prove herself and fails, we'll still be there in the morning.

Everyone of our Pokemon wants to prove themselves.
Well, Dan just doesn't give a damn, and Fel's just here because it's fun, and Nibbles wants to play with the big boys... Most of our pokemon want to prove themselves. All of them in different ways, and we do enable some dangerous behavior, but that's okay.
Enabling dangerous behavior is entirely in character. So is the crushing regret when it fails.
>>
>>47640640
See I don't see enabling dangerous behavior as in-character at all. Participating in it yes, but evidence has continuously indicated that Kat can't fucking handle it when people get injured because of her. Also it's funny that you bring up Nibbles, because he actually was brought to the critical threshold against one of the Elite Four guys, I think it was Emma but I don't really remember right now, and we barely managed to bring him back. And we won just fine, and didn't have to deal with the guilt. And that was despite Nibbles still wanting to fight. And we did that because we're a trainer, he's a pokemon, and we knew that it wasn't worth the risk. And he's still just fine, he doesn't resent or hate us for withdrawing him.
>>
>>47640640
It's not that Dan doesn't give a damn, it's just that he's Dan.

Dan is Zen, Dan is peace.
>>
>>47640689
>See I don't see enabling dangerous behavior as in-character at all. Participating in it yes, but evidence has continuously indicated that Kat can't fucking handle it when people get injured because of her.

Huh,
Because we keep encouraging people around us to take bigger risks when it would be safer for them not to, like pulling Robin out of her shell, or Vance going after Imperium barefisted after teaching him to wrestle with bears. Enabling dangerous behavior is entirely in character for Kat, just as much as the having melt downs when it goes wrong is also in character.

Running into the fire was stupid, and we still did it. Getting into a fist fight with Hornbeam was stupid, and we still did it. Kat isn't coldly logical at all, so that you wish she was more logical isn't really in character.

Nibbles is a great example. We did pull him back, because good arguments were made against pushing him. So it's not impossible to make the changes you want. We didn't do it just because he's a pokemon, and we're the trainer, but because there were better options provided at the time.

Nibbles will probably be fine with pulling back later. Just as much as Aria knows we trust her to push past her limits, and that Devon knows that he can push past his limits, even knowing we will probably have a break down after the fact, even if everything turns out well.

It's all part of who Kat is.

>>47640830
>Dan is Zen, Dan is peace.
Technically Dan is Mu. I remember him getting angry in one fight, but I can't remember off the top of my head. He might have just gotten rumbly though.
