You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were maneuvering wildly to avoid volleys of antiship missiles being fired from Argentinian planes. Of course, they thought you were an Abyssal, so you couldn't really blame them, especially since it was your job to distract them until STRIKE-1 could extract the shipgirls being held at the base.

Fortunately for you, it seemed that the Argie pilots weren't familiar with their new planes and weapons, or were too anxious to properly aim them, since the majority of their missiles have largely missed, failing to track you and dropping into the water harmlessly.

Though, to be fair, your extremely small size could have something to do with it.

You check your radar again, and you see the Argie planes pulling back, their weapons spent. Well, most of them, anyways. You see one plane stubbornly continuing on his course, making a beeline straight for your position.

Was...was he trying to make a gun run on you?!

You decide to fire off a few warning shots in an effort to scare him off. You were pretty sure he couldn't cause significant damage to you, but you should be cautious anyways.

Plus, you were pretty impressed with this particular pilot's balls. You give another pulse with your radar to confirm his position and raise your guns...

You start lobbing 5-inch shells into the air with your cannons, making sure not to aim directly at the incoming plane, instead bracketing it with a cloud of flak shells. The Argie F-16 jinks and jukes, trying to throw off your aim, and refuses to be cowed by your withering fire.

At this point, you could now see the F-16 with your own optics, a dark shadow illuminated by a miniature sun at its back as the pilot hits afterburners. You see the F-16 dip its nose just ever so slightly, indicating he was getting ready for a strafing run and you brace yourself. There's a flash as his cannon roars, sending a rain of cannon shells down on you. Fortunately, he doesn't score a direct hit, but the shells land perilously close, splashing you with water as the volley rips past mere meters from you.

And then you feel a brief wave of intense heat as the F-16 pulls out of its dive, so close to the water that you almost swear you could reach up and touch it. You're blasted back when you eat a face full of jet engine exhaust as the F-16 tilts up to regain altitude, no doubt to try for another run.

You decide to focus on regrouping with Enterprise and the others. The object of this op was not to stand and fight, just to act as a diversion, and you believe that you've diverted them plenty. You swing around and pour all your energy into your boilers, pushing yourself eastward at full speed. However, your radar was updating you continously on the F-16's movements, and it as definitely circling around for another attack run. Your Rig mounted 5 inch cannon swivels around and barks as it fires in an attempt to ward the insane F-16 pilot off.

At this point, I'm tempted to suggest we switch the SPY-1 to War Emergency Power and pencil-beam it onto the Viper. Even if we don't fry the electronics and/or induce a charge in the ejection system, at least we'll make sure this bastard has funny-lookin' kids from pumpin' out thirty megawatts on a half-degree beam...

That's actually on the low end of what the SPY-1 can do. As in, unclassified estimates of its output based on the unclassified output of the original set from the early 70s on the Norton Sound.

And then there's the SPY-3 that's going on CVN-80, which should be pushing out somewhere in the neighborhood of half a TERAWATT...

Once again, the F-16 dives for a gun run. Thankfully, like before, the darkness and your small size play to your advantage, and the F-16 can't seem to get an accurate bead on you as his nose slides side to side to try and track where he thinks you are, based purely on the muzzle flash of your cannon. He lets loose another roar of cannon fire, which comes perilously close, but thankfully misses you once again, shearing a line in the water just ahead of you.

You're starting to worry that you were really going to have to shoot this guy down when the sky if filled with thousands of shooting stars. You glance up to see Enterprises' Hellcats finally coming to your aid. To the naked optic, they looked like shadowy bats, with jury rigged LED lights giving them a ghostly blue glow as they swooped down through the air, raining machine gun rounds and tracers on the F-16. You could tell that like you were trying to earlier, Enterprise was just trying to scare the pilot away rather than shoot him down.

That pilot had balls, you had to admit, but he wasn't suicidal. Seeing how he was outnumbered by presumably Abyssal aircraft, the F-16 drops its external fuel tanks and pulls an almost impossibly tight U-turn as he hightails it back to land.

"I thought you'd need the help." Enterprise says cheerfully over the radio.

"Well, you've done such a marvelous job protecting me, I thought I'd return the favor!" Enterprise giggles. "Think nothing of it!"

E-Enterprise appreciated your help! For some reason, that made your boiler flicker for a moment.

"Now..." Enterprise gazes westward, towards the burning shoreline. "Portland and San Francisco are still trying to separate from the engagement. They should be getting out of range of their guns in a few minutes, though do you think we should assist them anyways?"

Well, you were pretty sure that Portland and San Fran could handle themselves, but maybe it couldn't hurt for them to owe you a favor.

"Let's link up with Sweet Pea and San Fran!" You say, bouncing up and down on the water. That ballsy F-16 had gotten your oil worked up, and wanted to get some more action in before you had to leave!

"Aggressive as always, I see." Enterprise chuckles. "All right, I'll keep the skies clear. Just make sure they break contact with the Argentinian fleet!"

"Roger that!" You salute the carrier before veering off back west, towards the muzzle flashes. You could see Portland and San Francisco skating eastward, trading cannon fire with a flotilla of about five Argie gunboats being led by a frigate. Tracers lit up the night as 203mm and 57mm shells were traded. True, the modern ships' calibers weren't nearly as large as the cruisers', but they were more accurate and had a MUCH faster rate of fire, almost blanketing the entire surrounding ocean in lead while both Portland and San Francisco were hobbled by having to wait a few seconds in between volleys. Fortunately, the Argie boats don't seem to have done any significant damage, but the repeated 57mm hits on their hulls was starting to add up...

"You two need help?" You ask cheekily as you sail past the two cruisers, the Argies failing to see your arrival just yet.

"Hoel!" Portland is only able to croak out your name right before you close in.

You dive right into the middle of the Argie formation before they even have a chance to notice your arrival. All around you, you could sense the gunboats driving past, and right behind them and in front of you was their flagship, the frigate. They were all firing their cannons so rapidly you didn't even need your radar to see them.

What to do? Attack all of them at once, or take out their leadership?

You immediately make a beeline for the Frigate, figuring that if you managed to take it out, the rest of the flotilla would scatter, or at the very least halt the pursuit to assist their flagship. As you close distance, you raise your 5-inch guns and arm your torpedo launchers, trying to pick out where to attack. You could go for the hull. It was the easiest and safest place to hit, but at most you'd just cause the ship to flood which wouldn't put it into immediate danger.

But if you attacked the superstructure, you were sure to cripple the ship by taking out important sensors and systems, but... that was where much of the crew was...

Okay, so the votes tend to go towards attacking the flagship's hull, but there's differences in where exactly to hit it. Do you want to just hit anywhere below the waterline or try to aim for the screws/engine? For the latter, it's going to be a much more difficult shot!

You pick up speed and bend down a bit to lower your profile as much as possible as you try to swing around the flank of the frigate to hit it in the rear. Without engines, she'd be dead in the water, and it was certain that her escorts would stop to assist her. However, it was going to be a tough shot, considering the screws were underwater and water tended to screw up ballistic trajectories. Hell, you're not even sure if your 5-inchers had the power to punch through the water AND the screws.

But, well, you had to give it a shot. Thankfully, the Argies were too busy trying to pursue Portland and San Fran as they tried to make their escape to the open sea. Meanwhile, gatling guns and missiles vomited fire and lead as Enterprise's fighters ventured into their range, littering the sky with bright but fleeting stars.

Finally, you manage to swing around the stern of the frigate, and take careful aim...

You take careful aim with your torpedo launchers. This close, there was no chance of you missing. There's a dull WHUMP as a pair torpedoes are unleashed from their launchers and splash down into the water. You watch them whistle away towards the stern of the frigate, and grin as you see two massive geysers of water spout from the frigate's stern. The flagship immediately grinds to a halt, only sheer inertia carrying it forward.

Almost immediately, searchlights activate, banishing the darkness and illuminating the surrounding waters. Thankfully, since you were at the rear of the flotilla they don't immediately search that area. You quickly speed off, and note that the entire flotilla has ground to a halt, though they're still firing potshots at the retreating Portland and San Fran, who are still well within their range.

You finally take the chance to slip away while the flotilla's confusion was at its highest. The gunboats were now forming a defensive cordon around their stricken flagship, which was now smoking from the stern. Searchlights lanced out in all directions, but no fire came your way. They had no clue where you were.

Was this what it was like to be an Abyssal? Preying on hapless sailors like this...?

"Good job, Hoel." Portland grunts, snapping you out of your trance. "Looks like we're all clear. Enterprise is recalling her fighters, so hurry up and rendezvous with us."

"Got it!" You nod as you move to rejoin the others. However, your hydrophones pick up something. A rapid splashing sound off in the distance...

You glance over and squint with your optics, and in the distance you could see the smoldering remains of a gunboat, which had undoubtedly received a direct hit from an 8-inch gun. And scattered around it you could see men in the water...

You hear stops as age old instincts built your very hull told you that you needed to help them. But... but you technically weren't supposed to be here!

>>Fire a star shell over their position and leave.

You were torn. You knew that mission required that the Argies think that they were attacked by Abyssals, which mean that you couldn't directly contact them or anything. On the other hand, you couldn't just leave men in the water out there. In this darkness, it would be hard to find them, assuming the Argies even knew they had a downed boat out there. And considering their performance here, you wouldn't be surprised at that possibility.

So with some reservation, you load a star shell take aim, and fire, lobbing the small illumination shell so that it explodes in the air over where the sailors were, revealing their position to anybody within visual sight. That was all you could do, and you turn and make for full speed back to where the Tarawa was waiting for you.

---

"Good job, Hoel." Portland nods to you when you finally steam your way into the Tarawa's well deck. Portland, San Fran and Enterprise had already arrived well ahead of you, and it looked as if they were awaiting your return.

"Excellent work!" Enterprise pats you on the head gently. "I can see why the other destroyers speak so highly of you!"

"Good to see you're still in one piece." San Fran nods. You note that her Rig was pretty messed up, with deep dents and scorch marks all over it. You also notice her clothes were slightly tattered and burnt, with slight bruises on her skin. Signs of direct shell hits.

Portland also had quite a few hit markings, but not quite to the extent that San Fran did.

Meanwhile, you and Enterprise were practically spotless, though you knew E probably lost quite a few planes and had to expend quite a bit of energy to launch and recover them.

"Well!" Enterprise nearly gives out a big yawn, but manages to suppress it to a smaller one to preserve her image. "How about we all visit the dock and get ourselves repaired and refreshed?"

"You guys go on ahead. I'm still feeling pretty fresh." You grin as you puff up your chest with pride. "Besides, I was thinking I'd be a bit of a welcoming party to the new arrivals!"

"Hm, I'm not sure if the Captain will even let you near them for security purposes, but the thought is nice!" Enterprise smiles. Jesus, something about that smile of hers just made you all warm and fuzzy inside every time you saw it.

"Just don't cause too much trouble." Portland sighs. "Remember, these girls are probably going to be scared and confused."

"Nah, it'll be fine." You assure her.

"Whatever." San Fran shrugs noncommittally with the apathy you expected from her.

"All right! See ya later!" You wave as you dash out of the well deck and make your way up to the flight deck. You wonder if you should bring your sisters, too. Make it a full blown welcome party!

You decide to head up by yourself. No sense scaring the living daylights out of them or anything with an overwhelming welcome. You make your way up a stairwell to the top flightdeck just in time to see a pair of Ospreys touch down, their running lights off. You note that those pilots must have been extremely brave to fly in the dark like this with no external lighting.

However, there were enough lights up that you could see the bulk of STRIKE-1 disembarking the lead Osprey, while the trailing one disgorged what you assumed were the rescued shipgirls, with a small escort of the remaining STRIKE-1 members. You see them quickly rushing them to the elevator leading to the hangar deck.

Goddamn, there were so many of them! Who do you meet first?!

You find yourself drawn to the girl with the blazing red hair, which smoked and smoldered as if it were actually on fire, the individual strands shimmering from a deep crimson red to a bright orange. It was... certainly something to look at. As you got closer, you could tell that she was a cruiser of some kind. Maybe even a light cruiser.

"Yo! Hoel!" Red ambushes you from behind as she slaps on the back real hard. "We could see the fireworks on the way in! You really lit the fucking place up!"

"Well, technically, it was Sweet Pea and San Fran doing all the heavy lifting." You shrug. "And a bit of Big E, too."

"Hm, I suppose." Red nods. "But still, great job! Manged to get in and out without a single casualty!"

"It did go smoothly." Section nods as he brings up the flame haired girl. Honestly, she looked a bit like Red when you put them side by side like that. "Hoel, this here is USS Phoenix. Phoenix, this is Hoel."

"Hey there!" Phoenix grins as she steps forward and locks you in a bear hug. "Thanks a lot for gettin' us out of there! I thought we were gonna have to fight our way out there ourselves!"

You... you weren't sure how to respond, especially with your hulls structural integrity rapidly failing.

"W-what the heck were they doing with you?" You wheeze.

"Ah, well." Phoenix sets you down and rolls her eyes. "They basically just kept us in this real nice house and kept telling us that it was 'our sacred and patriotic duty to reclaim the Islas Malvinas' as their rightful soil. Just repeating that crap to use 24/7 and telling us that the British were unlawful occupiers or some shit like that. Kept calling me Belgrano, too, as if I ever liked that name!"

As Phoneix continued her complaints, her hair began to smoke and spark.

"They were trying to brainwash you?" You blink in surprise.

"I guess, but if they were, they were doing a pretty piss poor job of it." Phoenix shrugged. "All of us came back because we wanted to fight the damn Abyssals, but the damn Argies were more interested in cooping us up as their 'trump card.'"

"Interesting." Section nodded. "So they they really were intending to use you as special forces to seize the islands?"

"I suppose. They sure didn't seem to be interested in anything else." Phoenix sighs, ash flaking from her hair. "But yeah, besides, the Brit, I managed to keep our little unit together. Even though they were keeping us cooped up, they didn't want to risk pissing us off too much, I suppose."

"Shipgirls are still shipgirls." You nod.

"Well, ya all look tired, so how about a stop in the repair dock?" You grin.

"What? You've got one here on this ship?" Phoenix gasps.

"Yeah, well, as you can see, this is a pretty big ship!" You chuckle. "And it just so happens we've got some old faces down there right now!"

"No shit?" Phoenix grins and glances at Section. "Is it okay if we take a detour, Boss?"

"I don't see why not." Section shakes his head. "I'm sure the Captain can wait till the morning to properly debrief you all. Red, why don't you keep an eye on them?"

"Sure, why not." Red shrugs as she holsters her weapons. "Let's do this."

"HEY! TWERPS!" Phoenix bellows to the smaller girls. Obviously destroyers. "WE'RE MOVING OUT! FORM UP!"

"OKAAAAAAY!" The girls chime as they start running towards you.

And they don't seem to be slowing down.

You squint and your optics note that these girls looked VERY familiar. You don't immediately recognize their identities, but you do note that they looked EXTREMELY similar to Fletchers, except instead of the single braid the Fletchers wore, these girls had braided twintails.

And they still weren't slowing down.
