Welcome back, brawlers of the Belt, to Mecha Space Pirate Quest's forty-seventh installment! As always, you are Roarke Starwind, the man who protected Fatima's smile, the cause of that strange REEEEEEing sound crewmen on the Iulia Maesa keep complaining about, and Admiral of the Iron Kestrels.

Last time, you postponed two offers of allegiance to a power higher than your own somewhat invincible self, and were there when your onetime hostage Fatima Ahmad woke up.

Right now, she's kissing you. With incredible enthusiasm. Your lips almost feel bruised by the time she lets go of your shirt and sits up in bed, hugging your head against her chest with a happy sigh and petting your mane of orange hair, "But you are not hurt at all?"
>>
>>48696514

Nice caught it live!

So we all still game for the Fallout new Vegas plan of telling everyone to fuck off and claiming the belt for ourselves or what?
>>
If we want to begin taking over the belt, we could start with any colonies Fatima's family still owns. Mercinary contracts would even be legal and they'd likely be fairly sympathetic at this point
>>
>>48696514
Ah, that time of day. Aside from trying to make the Bigro and some alternative fist bits to give us more options(like some big grabby hands for pinning, dismantling and stealing weapons), I got some thoughts on who First Mate could be along with what made Fairchild stumble at the final declaration now that I read it.

Anywho, reassure her, show that we are unharmed, and let her in on details if need be. Bet she'll be happy that Rashad is considered a black stain on the record of Mars.. in more ways than one.
>>
I came up with a plan for declaring our faction anons

1. Interview with Gretchen to promote the tourney
2.Invite Soul A, Stern, and Kycilla to come to tourney/concert. Make sure they know its important
3.Have Karen, Sam, and Rosita set up security for the concert/tourney
4.Make sure that Haman knows that our Jovian friends are here since it will either dissuade her or make them hate her more
5.After the concert but before the tourney sit down our Jovian friends and lay everything on the table and invite them to our faction
6.Give a grand speech the final day of the tourney announcing our faction
7.Show how tough we are by beating the winner of the tourney
8.????
9.Profit
>>
>>48696640
>Aside from trying to make the Bigro
Fucking gundam, why must everything have a million different built in weapons?
>>
>>48696662
>Show how tough we are by beating the winner of the tourney
I'm not sure what people will think of us holding a tournament just so we can beat up the winner.
>>
>>48696514

You really should think about getting an ask.fm or a twitter to post what time you're gonna run.
>>
>>48696689
Part of the draw of the tourney is the chance to fight Roarke for the prize, its like Mortal Kombat
>>
>>48696689
Isnt that the whole point of having a tournament? Thats what videogames tell me at least.

I would say a exhibition match between King Swordfish would be more fruitful than fighting the winner. Both as a show of strength and good faith considering the roots of both machines. For the most part though? I think we should empathize as a good middle ground when it comes to the war at large. If both sides fight in the belt, being captured by us, who promise to ransom you back to your people is a better bet than being interrogated by a foreign power. Besides, I saw the tourney as what sort of mechs we should start producing as our new line of grunts.

>>48696673
Not just that, but it's like a smaller big zam that has arms instead of legs. Going to have to give them claws meant for grabbing than hurting. Also, weapon mounts on the torso are REALLY nice once you go for bigger ones. Saves on CP cost like mad.
>>
>>48696514
Hey Wong I got a couple of questions.
Do wings count for conditional movement?
Can weapons built into metaform wings be used in both arm and wing forms?
And is there any real benefit to having a humanoid mech with no hands over having a big jet with VTOL?
>>
>>48696741
>HOW!? You're like a mosquito or a cockroach or an irritating wardrobe assistant, you just won't die!"
Yeah, I'm betting on the Idol that owned the ship that the green skulls used
>>
>>48696774
I was hoping to use the tourney as a recruiting ground, get as many aces as we can in one place and hire as many as we can

"Having a sword wasn't enough to stop that..." You call to mind some of the things Fatima has called you in the past, "...that inbred son of a camel and a sow from getting his teeth punched out. His own allies betrayed him, so he somehow got out of their custody and into a mech."

She sighs heavily, "Thank Allah it wasn't his Khanda Custom, he took a regular Khanda transformable ground-assault vehicle and stuffed it full of all the SOUL technology Fairchild was giving him. He bragged about it quite a bit before...you know..." Her arms tighten around you, engulfing you in a pillowy prison.

"Mrrrrph mrrrh." You reply eloquently, expressing your acknowledgment of her words. She blushes and relaxes her arms slightly. You gulp in some air and repeat yourself, "I know, but if it was some kind of big...stick-insect...praying mantis...thing that turns into a pillbug thing, that's what he was riding."

"Roarke Starwind, do NOT tell me you fought his gaudy, overdesigned toy with your Black Ogre!" She tsks, and ruffles your hair furiously, "At least you had support, probably a dozen or so of your fleet mecha? You must have infiltrated the wedding somehow, maybe in one of the freight haulers?"

You glance to one side, "Well...sort of..."

"Sort of?" She tugs on your ear.

"I sort of landed the Tarrasque on the wedding. With the Kaiser riding on the Tarrasque." You mumble, "After I had you back, he somehow got to his mech and followed us, so I just...you know...went back to face him alone?" You're a brave, brave man, but Fatima's expression right now is scarier than when she's openly angry.

"So you fought him by yourself. Him in his personalized mech, you in your refurbished War-Era machine." She nods slowly, as if absorbing the information.

"I'm a much better pilot than he was." You retort defensively, "And refurbished doesn't mean the same as heavily upgraded. Most importantly, he had it coming. I took a vow, remember?" You grin up at her.

>>48696741
A possibility, but I would disagree simply due to what we know about the Slayer; It can't move if no one is piloting the green harpy. Now, when you look at the battle at Auditorium, the first Slayer attacked once the two other prisoners escaped; Aussie and Sabo-chick. Her knowledge with the systems means she likely has some electronics knowledge.. which could explain the suit she had and the size. Remember; the good doc said the first mate had WOMANLY hips, so she is likely a adult as oppose to a teen.

Then there is the fact that when we rescued the doc and Athena, a harpy went missing and there were implications that Jesus was waiting for something. Soon after, Slayer appeared again. So, it's pretty good odds that they were waiting for us to arrive, Slayer to escape, get back to their ship and get into her remote system.
>>
>>48696823

Welp she mad.

At least we get some high impact sexual violence out of it, or is that just with Clemmy?
>>
>>48696797
I'm not Wong, but as I read it, Wings only add to your MA if you're flying; as long as your permitted movement type involves flying, your Wings should work. On the other hand, if you're on land - using wheels, treads or just walking - you won't get the MA bonus. Not entirely sure what type of MA you count as using if you're underwater, but I'm inclined to say Flight.

For the second, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to.

For the third, you still have an MV penalty from being a Mechafighter, so your VTOL design may end up being more expensive after MV reduction and multipliers.
>>
>>48696797

For the first two, I'd have to check. I'd assume that weapons built into the servo itself could be used in either form. As for your third question, that jet gets -2 MV, which is what keeps everything from being raped by light, fast jets like the Scimitar.
>>
>>48696640

Share your thoughts, bro.
>>
>>48696845
Aye. I put the missiles on weapon mounts connected to the torso, the gattling gun will be a phanalax system attached to the head, Mega-particle cannon is going in the torso(though I may downsize it compared to the Zam's) and it's claws are on it's arms. To make it authentic, this thing is already looking to push past 200 cp, but damned if it won't mess with whomever gets in it's way.

Clearly those jets aren't mounting enough Verniers / aren't Roadstrikers with out-of-scale 1:1 weapons / are piloted by paraplegics with Parkinson's / don't have enough Design and Decor to prevent their pilots from freaking out when faced with the goddamn Black Ogre.

I realize they have very little in the way of defense but I just cant stop myself spending the points on more weapons instead. I was wondering what to do for a Condor and a little voice inside my head was telling me to just give it four linked rocket launchers.
>>
>>48696953
Well I mentioned my theory for FM here >>48696910
And for the specialized grabby arms, the largest arm size, beta armor, and a simple +2 accuracy hand would work for our needs. It'd compensate any penalties and 'quick' doesn't matter when doing maneuvers. It's pretty cheap if you go bare bones. Around 30 cp rather than 50+, but it's pretty specialized too.

As for fairchild? Well, to start with, we likely knocked away a few of her guesses. Caring for others could possibly be a trait of Roarke's mom, and being chastized for thinking of the enemy as not human could have been a low blow. Her talk with us screwed over her chances of us playing nicely when she demeaned us when all she had to do was go 'ok, see you there and we'll talk on good terms' and she knows it.

Final thing? We did take off our shades, stared her in the eyes, and made that demand. Considering the nature of Roarke's eyes, she probably saw them go from blue to a feral yellow as he made his statement.

You see the lightning flash in her eyes, and her lips part to deliver a razor-edged barrage of scolding. Then her brow furrows, and she sighs, "There really weren't enough warships or mecha on Mars to stop you from taking me back, were there?"

"I warned him." You keep grinning.

"You're an idiot, but you're my idiot. My wild wolf." She hugs you tight.

"His mech just wasn't as impressive as yours. I had nothing to worry about." You explain.

She smiles smugly and tightens her grip, "Flattery is a sin, Roarke."

"Where is that written, exactly?" You challenge her.

"In the hadith of...of..." She huffs and just hugs you tighter, "Thank Allah you're unhurt."

I'm honestly kind of surprised she didn't get more of a REEEE when I introduced her. I guess Zeta Gundam is a little old, but it's still among the best gundams and if you haven't seen it...go fucking watch it, it's good shit.

>>48697207

Given that Roarke is somewhere between a Char and a Treize (and a straight-up Paptimus if you asked Fairchild's opinion and she knew what you were talking about), that's not WHOLLY an unreasonable thing to say.
>>
You know, the fact that Fairchild's hate for our father outshines her love for our mother says a lot about her character. Mainly that she's a total bitch. What kind of a person also gives up like that? Fairchild a shit. An old shit. Call her old.
>>
>>48697172
..and now I remember that line FM said. "My hair is better!". Makes sense if they are the same shade. Well, we'll find out one way or another.

>>48697180
That seems fair. The ship was on the way out, it took a avalonian out of the fight, got us some good loot, and even helped Mars a bit. Though, is it odd that I feel she enjoys this wild side to us? We must seem like a animal that waited by her side with 'presents' laying by her bedside.
>>
>>48697065
I'm not sure you can actually purchase Conditional Movement in that manner. To begin with, the description refers to movement systems - Wheels, Treads, GES, Hydrojets, Thrusters and Gravitics. Wings themselves aren't a system; they're a servo which contains systems.

Secondly, you can only purchase it for a system you would gain a benefit from. You don't actually have Wings in humanoid form, since they're transformed into arms. Therefore, you can't purchase a multiplier to prevent you from using them.

Rereading your earlier questions, you shouldn't be able to use systems in a Wing servo which has been transformed into an Arm; you'd use the systems you've purchased in the arm. There's ways around this, though. For instance, purchasing Command Armor for the limb in question and mounting systems there. The limb transforms, but the Command Armor stays.
>>
>>48697321
Technically it could turn its arms into wings whenever it felt like it, doesnt even have to be a transformable mecha.
>>
>>48697236
All I remember was Kamille was the shit and there was Amuro flying a transport into a Mech Jackass style.
>>
So how should we reward our crew for a mission well done? I'm thinking a beach party with the greatest 80s cover band in the galaxy
>>
>>48697321
Scratch that third paragraph. Just reread the rules to check, and there's nothing to indicate what I just described is the case.

On a somewhat related note, I'm now very confused as to what happens if you purchase Metaform Limbs, but don't have enough spaces in individual limbs after transforming to distribute systems properly.

>>48697361
This is true. I think the intention is more to allow you to transform your four-armed mech into a two-armed, two-winged one, rather than to have a mechafighter with arms, legs and no wings, though.

"It wasn't intentional, but we did have a distraction helping us as we left." That's it, Roarke, just ease into it. No need to crush her with all of the information at once, "We had an exit strategy, but it ended up being unnecessary. Avalon attacked the Martian orbital macrogate platform."

"What!? Those heathen dogs DARED to enter SACRED MARTIAN SPACE!? What happened to the Gate?" She barks, her dark eyes holding the fury of one of the red planet's legendary sandstorms.

"It was damaged, but not destroyed. Mars won. Arguably." You squirm around until she loosens her grip on your neck, laying out on the hospital bed next to her on top of the blankets.

"Arguably? Are the traitors to mankind dead or not?" She presses, "Were you in the battle?"

"Of course I wasn't in the battle, I snuck onto Mars in a stolen freight transport. Those things are practically unarmed, I had less than two dozen mecha on board, and I was busy protecting you." You kiss her forehead, to remind her, and she shoves your chest with a smile. Still, there's no helping it, you have to break the news to her in the best possible way, "I did manage to take one of their ships hostage, though."

"Ahh, that's wonderful! Wonderful...why don't you tell me how you did it?" Her smile is sweet, but has a sharp edge to it, and her nails dig just slightly into your bicep as she hugs you against her.

"Well." You take a deep breath and muster your courage, "So, we were in a rusty little transport ship, right?"

"Right." She confirms, the pressure of her claws on your arm not lessening in the slightest.

It also changes form as its limbs change. I think the implication is that your new limb configuration should still fit the requirements for your body form. It isn't explicitly stated, though, so you can do as you wish.

Here it comes.
>>
>>48697564
Maybe not say anything about the foot massage
>>
>>48697580
Well thats the idea isnt it? Its limited to having wings in its jet form and since it needs wings as a jet its limited to arms in humanoid form.
Also I notice jet mode doubles the wing bonus so they should be going 1100 meters a turn.
>>
>>48697236
Now that I think about it, I'm shocked that there isn't a Cima analog running around being a Pirate.
Also fully expecting JErid and his two waifus to show up at some pointe
>>
>>48697644
The point being that you don't have Wings in humanoid form, therefore you can't purchase a restriction to prevent you from using them in humanoid form to get a CP rebate, since you already don't have Wings to use in the first place.

This being another point entirely from the fact that Wings should not be a valid movement system to select with Conditional Movement in the first place.
>>
>>48697536
Figured that would be part and parcel for the tournament. Some work is involved, but also entertainment and shifts. They had 2 weeks to themselves before the heist, so it's not like there has been too much pressure on them. If we make our super colony, then by all means we do a house warming and celebration.

Makes me wonder though.. could we set up the colony to have warp tech on it? It's not planet size, and it would make a pretty good defense for the belt and our people.
>>
>>48697725
But the only reason it doesn't have wings is because of conditional movement. Other than that it could have wings if it wanted.
>>
>>48697751
What are the odds the UJCIDF will not mobilize its entire army if they suddenly realize we've got a giant mech-carrier death-fortress that can teleport hundreds of miles at a time?

Having just remembered that 'humanoid' actually means 'do whatever the fuck you want' in Mekton, I see your point.

Regardless, the description is very clear in what you can select as a restricted movement type. Wings provide a Flight MA bonus, but are not a movement system.

"So, funny thing, as the Avalonian ships were fleeing from the UJCIDF and the Holy Militia...who fought very bravely, I might add...one of them mistook us for regular cargo haulers." You're too cool to stammer, the words pour in a measured cadence, smooth and casual, "The Paladin captaining it decided to bribe us for guidance to a safe port. I recommended Auditorium, and led them there."

"Was this Paladin...a word they do NOT have the right for and should NOT be using because they are in NO SENSE knights...male or female?" Even through your leather jacket, you can feel Fatima's nails tightening on your upper arm.

"Female, more than half the galaxy is. That shouldn't be surprising. Anyway, she trusted me enough to follow me..." You try to press on.

"I. Wonder. Why." Fatima looks up at you with more tigerlike eyes than even Domon possesses.

"...And when we arrived and they found out that the cost would be their ship and their mecha, I was challenged to single combat. Another perfectly normal occurrence." You shift slightly to try and lessen the pressure of her grip on you, it doesn't work.

"Mhm. After being hit in the powerplant with a beam saber from the Khanda Custom. You just decided to fight a Paladin of Avalon. Just like that. I only know vaguely of them from my father, but it isn't hard to tell you're talking about an enemy ace who WORSHIPS THE GREEN MEN AND HAS BEEN TWISTED BY THEIR EVIL HANDS, ROARKE STARWIND!" She shakes you vigorously.

"I won!" You protest, "It was tough, but I managed to wrestle her mech's limbs off."

"SO YOU WRESTLED WITH THE AVALONIAN WHORE!" Fatima rolls over on top of you, still cocooned in her blankets. That squeeze is definitely intended to hurt now, "Is she dead?"

Because she's alive, I can get information from her and then ransom her for another big payday. If I start killing people who surrender, word will get out and then it's just work, work, work all the time because nobody will trust me to keep my word. This way is better. She's my hostage, her mech is in pieces, and we're all safe from being accused of peasantry by Countess le Kennedy." You keep your voice calm, smiling at the Martian woman and casually reaching up to adjust your sunglasses.

She glares, but it slowly loses its intensity, "I was a hostage, my wolf. She is not the same as me, she is an enemy of the Solar System. I'l be honest, the UJCIDF deal is a pretty good one in the short term. As it stands, Avalon's presence in the Belt does us more harm than good, and getting on their good side does us no good anyway because they plan to leave and we don't.
the main downside is that Fairchild is as likely to stab us as shake our hand, and that the Countess dies.
what we need to do is get Fairchild and Eustace to duke it out, and then kill/capture whoever left
>>
>>48698440
How about we let the two sides fight for a while while staying in the background building our forces up and then come in and mop up whats left
>>
>>48698440
Honestly, I feel like if we're smart we could get a bigger profit from the Avalonians simply by using the UJCIDF price as a base. With some good haggling and using our knowledge of the UJCIDF prices, we could get another 30% along with whatever price the crew would have alongside the machines and ship.

"...to make up for ruining your special day?" You finish with a smile. Fuck having problems. You've got Fatima back, sharp tongue and all.

She blinks, her momentum halted.

Before she can speak, you continue, "I know. I'm not Martian, I'm under no delusion that I'm a gallant knight no matter what anyone says, I don't come from a rich family and commit crimes to stay rich myself, I've got exceedingly bad manners. Worst of all, I made you wait." You put your arms around her blanket cocoon and sit up, "I've still got the bridal dress you were wearing, and you took my breath away in it. Will you marry me?"

Her cheeks darken to a dusky rose, and she squeaks, "Roarke...you...you..." Her shoulders shake, and for a moment you can't tell if she's happy or murderously angry. Then she throws her arms around your neck, "You're the best boy in the galaxy. Yes. Yes! Even if you're a brute, and even if you really, really do need someone to look after you when you're being an idiot." She squeezes you with a sigh, "I won't be cross anymore. It's my job to make your life easier, not harder. So rest, my wolf, I see how hard all of this has been on you. I'll take care of everything. The Caliph was a good friend of my father, he will hear me if I have to shout my way through every bureaucrat and minister in the planetary government to reach him with my voice, and I will sell this harlot of the Green Men to him for such a price that we will have the most magnificent wedding imaginable. I love you." She feels around for your hands, grabs them, and squeezes them tight, the lights from the ceiling illuminating a gleam of moisture in the corners of her eyes.

"I love you too." You think for a moment, then kiss her, and when you're done kissing her you make a decision and nod, "But you can't make things too easy for me, I'd get bored. If it's not too much trouble, go ahead and contact the Caliph, tell him to put his offer on the table."

Her eyes go wide, "You want Hakim the Kinless, on whose shoulder rests the hand of the Prophet, to barter with you?"

You shrug, "It's tradition, isn't it? I have offers from the UJCIDF as well, and I'm sure her people will offer me something. She's an ace, a useful political tool, but not unbeatable. I don't think she'll make enough of a difference to consider it betrayal of the Solar System if I just hear what her allies can pay me for her return. If it was a Green Man, it would be a different matter, but the Countess is human, I don't want to just condemn her to a miserable death for a war she didn't start."

Fatima tries to scowl, but it doesn't have her usual intensity, and after a moment she just sighs happily and rests in your arms. "I will tell the Caliph that you are a good man with a sinful heart that requires wise counsel. I will tell him that even though she has taken lives, you insist on the honorable treatment of captives. I will tell him to send a skilled negotiator, capable of working with the Jovian representative against the inevitable treachery of Avalon." She smiles, "And I will tell him to be generous. After all, if you marry me, and not the other girls, I will surely be poisoned by one of them within a week."

"Already taken care of." You assure her, the two of you smiling at each other. "You should rest." You remind her.

"I should." She nods, the blankets sliding down off her shoulders. She adjusts the hem of her hospital gown.

In the end, you get her to rest. She wants to do more, but she just woke up from surgery, and she needs to sleep. You tuck her back into bed, and she steals one last kiss before releasing you. As you walk out of her room, you get out your PC and send a few messages.

The meeting doesn't take long to set up, and it serves a few purposes. First, you need to go over Auditorium's defenses and security arrangements. Second, it gives you the chance to meet your new Captains...you have two, you remember. One of them was supposed to be safely in prison. Thirdly, because Oda told you something you commissioned for him is ready, and this is a convenient way for you to walk off with Red Siren when things are done.

You make your way through the sunny streets of the Colony to a small but classy bar tucked atop a promontory along the shore. You make your way through the establishment, which is full of quiet people wearing your colors and an awful lot of guns, and out the door at the back. A cool breeze washes over the back patio, carrying the scent of the lake. Your table is right in the middle, with four individuals sitting around it. Oda and Red Siren are immediately recognizable, but the other two faces are new.

You recognize Captain Harold Beckingham immediately. He's the most overtly piratical person you've ever seen. His black silk shirt has a white skull-and-crossbones emblazoned on it, he wears a huge, dramatic cape with a warlock collar, and he even has a tricorn hat and mechanical eye. Aside from that, you'd never have guessed he was a pirate. He's of average height, slender unto the point of being gangly, with a mop of wild brown hair. You've heard of him, of course. Supposedly, he's aloof, he and his crew generally uninvolved with outside affairs except when performing a heist, they excel at hit-and-run with their fast mecha and rarely engage in prolonged battle. You're rather surprised to see him here. He acknowledges you with a nod.

[Continued]
>>
"Well now. Dude McCool all grown up, as I live and breathe." The other face is even more recognizable. Staring at you from across the table is the scarred visage of...

"Captain Flint." You greet him without showing any of the hesitation you actually feel. The Stone Soldiers are supposedly fanatically devoted to this man. Moses Flint, the hardest son of a bitch on California Station. The Stone Soldiers always prided themselves on being a small, elite force, led by a former UJCIDF Captain, and even the serving members of the Jovian military you've met don't quite exude its straight-backed, murderous discipline like this man does. Three long scars trace the right side of his face, and his eyes are a blue so pale they're chilling.

"Admiral Starwind." He gets up and extends his hand. You shake it. He tightens his grip, you tighten yours, he looks satisfied at your strength, "I was sorry to hear about Ozark. Good on you for killing those green bastards, I hope Galbadie squealed like a pig as he burned." He smiles, baring a line of brilliantly white teeth.

"I thought you were in prison?" You ask.

He shrugs, "Well, about that..."

By the way, since we have a bunch of breather stuff coming up in preparation for the tournament, I was wondering what you guys would think of interspersing a bit of a sidequest so that we don't all get too rusty from insufficient action.

Say, something in the Extrasolar Division. A bit of more gritty war story, with a character in a mech a lot less sturdy than the Knuckle Kaiser. In other words, you would be playing as the earnest, hardworking pilot of a grunt unit (although it would at least be a decent grunt unit).

"Now, first off, I came to Auditorium with a long-ass list of complaints and advice to what I thought was a puffed-up young shitling with a rich girlfriend. Figured I'd whoop you into shape, teach you to be somewhat decent at the job you've lucked into. I even had a decent writeup of the flaws in your combat style and a list of reasons why a pilot without a gun on his machine is a dead pilot." He smiles, and claps you on the back, "But you proved me wrong, son. That was all before I saw you fight that alium bitch and heard about the op to get your hi-jab-i girlfriend back from Mars. Damned fine op, son. Damned fine op."

"I thought you soldiers called your superiors Sir?" Captain Beckingham interjects.

"When I want your opinion you Jove-damned environmentalist cornhole I'll shove a bayonet in my eye and spare myself the trouble. I'll call him sir when we're on duty." Captain Flint replies without rancor, "You want to know how I got out of prison, son? I'll tell you. Now first, some damned prepubescent son-of-a-bitch gets on the comms during a perfectly routine bit of tactical operating, starts whining a bunch of pansy-ass liberal nonsense about peace and understanding. Now the gist of it was that we should surrender and throw down our arms, and NO ONE tells Moses Flint and the Stone Soldiers to dis-arm, no sir! Not some punk kid, not the Jove-damned government, not Jove himself. So I told the little bastard he could have our munitions point-first, and set up a barrage." He sighs, "The Bluegill's a damn fine machine, but clearly despite his bluepilled bullshit the little twerp knew how to operate himself. Precision sniping, and damned if the little bastard wasn't toying with us, taking off our limbs and letting us drift until his ship rolled around to pick us up."

"But that's just how you were captured." You frown, accepting a beer from Red Siren and taking a sip, "How did you escape?"

"You see, son, when a man lives a life like mine, he learns a thing or twelve about adverse circumstances. I had always expected that someday the same military that unfairly discharged me for breaking the spine of the superior officer who got my squad killed through incompetence would someday come to try and revoke my very liberty itself. I had all kinds of plans to engineer my escape...but what I wasn't expecting was for the prison warden herself to be such a...well, a fine woman, if you take my meaning. Strong sense of duty, little too outspoken for the kind of politics the UJCIDF likes these days. She'd been banished to that rat-trap and left to rot." He takes a deep sip of his drink, "Well, during our interrogation sessions, we got to talking, and I tell you son I felt the tidal pull of freedom tugging on that woman's heart, and I gave it wings. I'd like to claim, now, that one of my genius plans led to our escape...but really I just punched out both of her bodyguards, pretended to take her hostage, freed my men, claimed adequate compensation in the form of government-issue Pumpkinseeds and the warden's own Pumpkinseed II...ceremonial, really, damned woman hates flying...and jacked a new ship. While celebrating my honeymoon with my new bride, I got to thinking that they'll surely be after us again and that there's admittedly a little bit of safety in numbers. That's about the time I heard what happened to the Green Skulls, and better I work for one of Ozark's boys than someone I don't know. Just don't be an ass, son, and I'll be the bullet that splatters your enemies' brains across the landscape." He smiles and makes a fingergun gesture, then lowers his voice, "Although, between you and me...you oughtta ditch the alium. She's poison to have around. Even if her vagina ain't sideways, her thoughts and morals are. She ain't like a good, Jovian girl, no sir."

If the movie had wanted to show both sides of the conflict, it would have ended better for everyone. Training may be a good idea. Getting the core of our fleet to A rank would make us quite capable. Our Aces could use some training as well since Miles and Richard are starting to fall behind the other captains.

"You're not the first one to tell me that, and that's one of the issues we're here to discuss. I'm sure Rosita told you all about the upcoming concert, right? We're also holding a tournament for up-and-coming young aces, and representatives from at least three different militaries are going to be here to barter for the Countess. We're going to need..."

Hours stretch by as you plan out the security of Auditorium. It turns out, Red Siren already thought of some of the problems. She explains that the colony, which can support a city-sized population, is a lot bigger and more heavily armored than Suleiman's colony and its mining town. Furthermore, she's been equipping it with CIWS batteries to accompany the Medium and Heavy anti-ship beam batteries concealed within its neon-laced hull. Granted, there are battleships that can hit from outside the colony's range, but every Wels-class or bigger is a serious investment of firepower and money. She brings up a map on her PC to show everyone, displaying it across the table, and sitting practically in your lap to point out the details. Between her knowledge of Auditorium and Moses' insight on security measures, there isn't really much for you to contribute besides approving or denying ideas, mostly approving. You aren't even allowed to deny some of Red Siren's more grandiose ideas for the tournament, she's very insistent that both you AND the Knuckle Kaiser have giant thrones to sit on and none of your subordinates are willing to come to your defense. She vows to have the arena ready at least a month before the concert is actually set to happen, too.

Privately, you intend to look into how much this is going to cost her, and contribute a little. After all, she's been good to you, helping her out is the right thing to do. You're not whoring yourself to her, after all, no matter what General Fairchild says. You're partners.

Oddly, it's the quiet Captain Beckingham who changes the subject eventually, "Admiral, what do you want, long-term?"

"Freedom." It's taken a while to think it through, but you have. You can admit it openly, without having to soften it, around your fellow captains.

Rosita smiles at you, and squeezes your hand beneath the table.

"I want." You clarify, "No part of these power struggles. I'm no friend of the Green Men, but I won't become the UJCIDF's instrument like the Green Skulls were...Flint, Beckingham, ask Oda if you didn't know about that...and I'm certainly not working for anyone else. If I can, I want the belt to be an independent state under us. For that, we're going to have to start taking over colonies. No atrocities, just simple conquest." You look around, and somewhat to your surprise the others are all nodding.

"I'm familiar with Captain Oda, Admiral." Beckingham smiles. His voice is educated and refined, even scholarly, "Like him, I too have a dream."

You blink at him, "You want to restore Imperial Japan?"

"HAI!" Oda crows with a fistpump.

"Well, yes. Only, a bit more than that. Earth is mankind's birthright, and we've been denied it since the Confederacy of United Star Systems was established. Prior to the circumstances that led to me becoming a pirate, I was a terraforming specialist. My research rubbed a few powerful people the wrong way, and my career was destroyed...but I'm certain of my findings. There is no need for a restoration tax on Earth's inhabitants, Earth's climate recovered long ago. The few people who are allowed to dwell there live in an untouched paradise."

"A conspiracy, huh?" Captain Flint's lip twists as he considers it.

"It's not a conspiracy when it's done openly." Captain Beckingham corrects him sharply, then smiles wanly, "It seems I came to the right place. This is the only group that could even set up the circumstances for humans to reclaim their world of origin, the Cradle of Mankind itself."

"In other words, Beckingham-kun supports my claim." Oda grins cheerfully, "Someday, we'll all have sake in Edo together and watch the cherry blossoms."

You smile and hold up your beer, "I'll drink to that dream."

The five of you drink and engage in small talk for a while, before the artificial light starts to progress towards evening, and Red Siren stands up with a smile, lifting you with her, "Excuse me, everyone. The Admiral is walking me home." She looks up at you, a delighted light in her eyes. After all, this is the first time you've really set a course as a leader of multiple crews, rather than just pursuing your own interests with the help of other people.

Oda nudges a box towards you, and you deftly scoop it up. It's wrapped in bright orange paper and what feels like bubblefoam underneath, likely to keep something safe.

She leans on you as you leave the gathering, "You look stressed. Are you sure you're resting enough?" She mentions once you're out of earshot of your subordinates.

"No." You admit.

She nods sympathetically, "I'm sure my future sisters would all agree, you need a few days off." She climbs onto her jetbike, and you mount up behind her with your arms around her waist as she takes off.

"Starting right now?" You smile down at her as you make your way together towards her palace.

She deftly swerves around a passing food truck, looking up at you and nodding smugly, "Yes, starting right this very minute, dear."

A guard at the gate waves you in, and before you're really aware of it you've been bustled up into her quarters again. You sit on the couch as she saunters off into an adjoining room, returning wearing apparently nothing but a bathrobe and her eyepatch, pouring each of you a taste of some of the best scotch you've ever experienced.

"I just don't know what to do with the Countess." You finally admit, "I'm going to let everyone bid on her, and see who has the best offer, but even then I'm not sure who I actually trust."

"It all feels like empty vanity to me." She says with a shrug.

"What do you mean? Rosita, a person's life is in my hands, not to mention..." Your voice trails off as she puts a finger to your lips.

"Shhhh, just you shut your mouth." She murmurs intimately, "It doesn't matter because you'll find a way to save her."

"Save her?" You echo.

She winks at you, setting the bottle on the table and relaxing next to you, "You won't sit there and let the UJCIDF have her, you know what they would do."

"Public crucifixion, according to General Fairchild. She certainly expects me to accept." You sip your drink, feeling its heat burn through your stomach.

"Too bad for General Fairchild. I'm not one of your military maidens, Roarke, I'm a pirate too. I know you're no pushover for that sort of person, and I also know from personal experience that you're a huge romantic who only starts murdering when people really, really deserve it." She smiles archly, "I'm not making any other predictions, but I do know you won't let her be crucified right in front of you. You're too soft for that."

"Maybe. I make no promises just yet." Although you still don't want to see her die, you want to see your people die even less, and this whole series of events has put a lot of heat on your fleet.

"Just say I'm right." She sprawls out on the couch across your lap like a cat, her feet kicking slowly, "So, what's in the box? Is it for me?"

"You're right." You indulge her with a grin.

She laughs at you, and opens it, pulling off the bubblefoam and paper to reveal a shiny, rosewood box. It's not particularly large, but it's of old-fashioned make, with hand-done detail work in a pattern of rose petals along the corner. "What's this for?" She wonders, and opens it up. As your song starts to play, a sweet-pitched instrumental version, she claps her hands to her mouth. She sees the little wooden model of a dashing man with a mane of orange hair waltzing across the tiny ballroom with a tiny wooden model of a lady with pink hair and a long, scarlet gown, and she gasps. She looks at you, her eyes huge, "Roarke, this is..." She quickly picks it up, and carries it over to a shelf across the room, setting it up there, "I'm just going to put this here, so it won't get damaged." She looks at you, eyes gleaming, "Have I told you that I love you, today? Because I think you need to be told, darling." She licks her lips, "I think I need to remind you. I'm definitely getting emotional...oh dear..." Her breathing slightly ragged, she approaches you.

...And then, suddenly, a maid appears, opening the doorway with a PC in hand. Before she can articulate who's calling or who it's for, Rosita's discarded bathrobe hits her in the face. The maid claws it away, and opens her mouth to speak, only to be hit in rapid succession by your shirt, shoes, pants, and underwear in rapid suggestion, tossed uncaringly away over Red Siren's shoulders. The maid surreptitiously tucks your underwear into her uniform to sell on the holonet later, and flees.

Red Siren's song is especially loud that evening.

So, before we conclude tonight, a few notes on the earlier idea for a sidequest.
