Once everyone has filed out of the testing hall, Anko and Genma appear once more.

“Everyone!” Anko yells, her voice carrying throughout the building.

Such a loud woman- you never have fully grasped why Itachi thought she would be a good fit for you team. Poor Genma is probably deaf.

The noise level increases to a dull roar as the crowd of genin slowly shuffles out of the hallway. You follow, flanked by Nori and Hinata, while Choji, rushing to finish his meal, brings up the rear.

Exiting the back of the academy, Anko and Genma lead you all along a winding path far outside the outskirts of Konoha. You pass several of the training fields you used as students- and those in use by current genin teams not participating in the exam.

Eventually, you reach a large forest, seemingly entirely fenced off.

“Training Field #44- “Forest of Death” a signpost reads.

Forest of Death, huh? You ponder silently if Minato named this as well. It’s certainly in creativity….


“Alright, everyone, listen up!”

Anko again, loud as ever.

“This here is the Forest of Death, the location of your second round of Chunin exams! I will warn you, especially those of you who may have taken these exams before- the Forest has gone under some renovations as of late! It may not be how you remember it- always proceed with caution- don’t make me collect more of your corpses than absolutely necessary!”

She certainly seems cheery about this part- more than you would expect.

“Once everyone is settled, my partner Genma will explain the rules! So, get settled! We don’t have all day!” Anko continues to shout.

You take the moment to relax with your team- letting the crowds sort themselves out without you.

After a period of time, you hear Anko’s voice carry across the field.

“Alright everyone! Quiet! Time for the rules!” she shouts, before making a gesture presenting Genma.

He coughs, politely.

“Ok, everybody! There’s a lot of you here, so we’ve changed the rules a bit! There are 8 chests within these woods! These eight chests all contain the same item- a scroll of the Underworld! Your task, genin, is to retrieve one of these scrolls, and take it to the tower in the center of the woods! Those who do not have the scroll, will be barred from entering the tower until the time limit for this test has passed- 120 hours, or 5 days!

“These eight chests are scattered around the woods in eight unique areas- The Village, The Waterfall, The Caves, The Bridge, The Castle, The Den of Beasts, The Plain, and The Mountain! Each landmark will be quite clear when you see it. These landmarks contain one chest a piece, which in turn, has one scroll within! Be advised- you are not to look inside the scrolls under any circumstances!”

Genma tuts, then continues explaining.

“Obviously these are not enough scrolls for everyone- if you do not wish to face the challenges within each landmark, you can try to take them from your opposing Genin! As previously stated, each team of three will only be permitted inside with a scroll to accompany them!”

He takes a deep breath, and relaxes.

“It’s very dangerous in there, so proceed with caution. After the time period has ended, we will search for those who remain. Everyone who wishes to continue, follow me over to the registration desk. You will be required to sign a waiver….”

Genma trails off explaining paperwork. You seem to understand the methodology of the test- retrieve the target item, and deliver it to the target location safely. Do not attempt to open the scroll. If you fail to get a scroll from it’s original location, one can be taken from other genin teams- presumably by force.

You're somewhat relieved- this seems more like an actual test of your abilities, rather than that goofy test.

You do realize, though, that you'll need to get two of the scrolls- one for your team, and one for Shikamaru's. That... could be troublesome.

The six of you split as not to draw too much attention- and proceed to the station for registration.


“Ahhhh! Tsuki! It’s good to see you again!” Anko says, beaming behind the registration desk.

You give her as much of a genuine smile as you can muster.

“Afternoon, Anko-sensei. I need to register for the 2nd part of the exams….”

“Oh, of course! Now, please don’t go dying in those woods, ok? Itachi won’t ever let me live that down if the three of you go out on my watch….”

She’s smiling, but her words are rather grim. You don’t think you fully understand this women, yet.

More political niceties from Minato. If an enemy village was upset enough over the loss of their genin, they’d make problems, paperwork or no. Especially since many of Hidden Villages don’t seem to have quite as many genin teams as Konoha does in this exam…..

You sign it anyway, handing it to Anko. In return, she hands you a map.

“There are several different entrances- choose whichever one you’d like- although I wouldn't’ recommend picking the crowded ones!” She says with a wink.

You bid her farewell and give the map a once over. Some entrances seem equidistant with two of the landmarks- while others are clearly oriented with on in particular. With 16 entrances in all, there is a likelihood at least a few teams will be doubled up. The map is rough, and you have no idea any measure of distances, but each of the landmarks are clearly labeled.

Once everyone meets up, you lay out the plan.

“I went ahead and chose Gate 8- should be far enough away that we can claim it between the six of us. With two teams at that gate, I doubt anyone else will want to be around.” you explain.

The five shinobi nod, understanding the plan.

Once everyone has signed the paperwork, Genma addresses everyone a final time.

“Alright, thank you everyone for making that quick! Now, at this point I’ll give you leave to choose your Gate of choice- in twenty minutes, a alarm will sound over all sixteen gates, and the gates will rise! At that point, you are free to enter- and after a minute, all gates will close!”

“So, Shinobi! Make preparations and choose your Gate! Your have twenty minutes!” he finishes.

Good thing you already chose your gate, then. The six of you take off, with Choji carrying Ino on his shoulders.

Soon after you take off, many other shinobi follow, but quickly split off from you to take unoccupied Gates. You are the first to reach Gate 8, the six of you standing somewhat apart.

You make note of teams that pass by you-

A team of Ame shinobi, wearing their bulky rebreather masks.

Team Kakashi- Neji, Sai and Kabuto. They wave as they pass by.
Team Kurenai- Shino, Kiba, and TenTen. TenTen stops to give a big smile and wave before leaving to catch up with her team.

Closely behind the are the Genin from the Sound. You notice their glances, but otherwise they keep moving.

Behind them, a Team from Takigakure- the only distinct shinobi among them is a blue-haired girl with a tanned complexion.

A team from Suna is next- although not the team with the Kazekage’s kids in it, seemingly. They are all dressed somewhat similarly to how you were while in the Land of Wind- loose clothes and masks.

Quickly behind them follows a team from Kusagakure- one of them is wearing a really large hat.

You slow down some, with Nori and Hinata matching your speed.

Shikamaru is quick to catch up, and eventually Choji makes it as well, although he’s loudly huffing and puffing.
“Hinata. Keep your eyes out- we need to be careful heading up to this first landmark.”

“Yes, Tsuki-hime.” she replies- and in an instant, her Byakugan are active.

Hinata keeps a tight perimeter as you move along, although you don’t run into any of the other shinobi teams.

Yet.

After a half hour of this pace, you can see the “Castle” in the distance. Unsurprisingly, it’s shaped just like a traditional castle, tucked within the massive foliage.

As you approach, Hinata scans the building.

“Three chakra signatures inside- on the same floor, moving quickly. They’re searching for something.” She reports.

“The chest, yeah? Let’s go get ‘em!” Nori says, excited the fighting is about to begin.

“Hold on, Nori.” You say, reading the placard on the outer wall.

“This is the CASTLE. A traditional construction of the Warring States period. Secret passages and traps are hidden within. Can you find the treasure and escape?”

You’d read about these old castles- these things basically a vertical labyrinth of tunnels and scret passages.

There are a few ways to approach this….

1. Go in and search with all six of you!

2. Split up the teams to search and guard the entrance!

3. Defend the exit, and face the team when they exit with the scroll!
