I have such a thing, started by gnomes after they discovered a strange meteorite that crashed to the earth, they have a compulsion to invent, create, and mechanize. The mechanicus is about replacing the flesh with steel, is about the highest virtue being understanding and knowledge, is about the wisdom of the ancients being the ultimate form of wisdom, and is about unsafe experimentation and ai being the grand folly, and the abomination.

Just avoid all of that, have the members of the religion not replace their bodyparts with technology, have them revere new knowledge over old knowledge, have them worship the progress as a mean and not an end, and have their eternal enemy be stagnation, and not a warped path forward.

(American) Protestant groups have this thing called the "prosperity gospel" which dictates that God rewards the righteous with material wealth and that hard work is a sign that one has been predestined for Heaven (many of these groups also believe in predestination, which is to a certain extent denial of free will). Create a religion that emphasizes this even more. Righteousness is deemed equivalent to wealth, and those who are rich are rich because they are good. You end up with a nation where the industrial and mercantile classes are seen with almost religious reverance, and I imagine that wealthy parents would pay good money to have their children educated by the best capitalists in the country.

Like, you have a sect that argues that moral good is in the creation and research for the advancement of the human race, and efforts must be shared and directed towards the collective.

The other sect believes that to be prosperous and to advance is a sign of being favored by the great benefactor, and thus one who amasses wealth in the name of progress is benefiting from their worthy reward.

Basically, must the advance of technology and worship be a communal goal, or an individual endeavour?


And then, you have the divides of even older sects of the religion, the most early schism, which was those who deride mass production and believe that crafting and research must be done for their own sake, and the most popular sect that believes that goodness is derived from the archievements made with technology, and that the sacred work is to impart that knowledge for the good of mankind, not to store it in monasteries.

Well, fill in the details of your religion that aren't about industry and make them distinctly non-mechanus. For example, robotics, innovation and deviation from the design is considered heresy in 40k. Maybe yours could value and encourage automation and new designs?
Another thing to note is that the mechanus worships technology. Commerce really doesn't come into it; so your dudes being a little more capitalistic might be a good idea.

Then, ask questions pretending its a real religion and make up answers to your liking. Are there gods or more of just vauge concepts? if there are gods, are they humanoid? What about ritual? do the adherents have a church? Do they seek to convert people?
