Cult of Prometheus (American Gods for modern interpretation)
Progress/industry for it's own sake is bland, so it needs a cause behind it. Individuals can be absorbed into industry for it's own sake, but a guided organization needs a purpose.
>>
>>56831532
I don't recall that being in the book. Is this some shit they made up for the tv show?
>>
>>56830888
A smith god.

If I remember correctly, Hephaestus constructed a bunch of bronze robots once.
>>
>>56831924
It could be interesting to see workers praying for said Smith god before turning iron into steel or when shaping steel into tools using modern machinery.

If you think about it, Hephaestus and similar gods would be a much more popular if they stayed being pagans until today
>>
I have such a thing, started by gnomes after they discovered a strange meteorite that crashed to the earth, they have a compulsion to invent, create, and mechanize. They teat up the land for materials, create simulacra of animals and creatures, replace parts of their bodies with mechanisms, and grow their great city day by day, building upon it. It's like a fantasy Hive City, ruled by a theocracy.

Reverse the Amish stereotype and remove deity, industry is an end into its self.

>how would I go about this without people going "lol its NOT! Mechanicus!"
Don't play with 40kids.
>>
>>56835916
The Amish (and related Plain Folk) aren't actually anti-technology; that's just a stereotype based on their culture.

Amish are perfectly happy to adopt new technologies as long as they don't have any disruptive effect on their family life. I know Amish who own iPads.
>>
>>56836105

I know, that's why I specified reversing the stereotype. I actually have a lot of respect for the Amish, the comfort and ease technology brings really has eroded our the core of our society, and if I wasn't a /k/ommando in the IT field, I'd likely join them.

>>
>>56830888
First, understand what the mechanicus is about. Then, avoid that.

The mechanicus is about replacing the flesh with steel, is about the highest virtue being understanding and knowledge, is about the wisdom of the ancients being the ultimate form of wisdom, and is about unsafe experimentation and ai being the grand folly, and the abomination.

Just avoid all of that, have the members of the religion not replace their bodyparts with technology, have them revere new knowledge over old knowledge, have them worship the progress as a mean and not an end, and have their eternal enemy be stagnation, and not a warped path forward.

Also, maybe use aesthetics of grand design, industrial revolution and pillars of glowing computers, instead of cyberpunk, cables and robotic arms.

Maybe holding the skill of craftmanship as holy?
Or something where each created objected is considered to have a spiriting imbued, but the effectiveness of the crafted object depends on the tool, which depends on the crafter's devotion.
>>
>>56838480

That's actually something to think about: How do they feel about mass production? Is it a good thing because it is technological innovation and greater well, production? Or do they think that it costs something in the personal touch and find it just shadows of the original?
>>
>>56830888
(American) Protestant groups have this thing called the "prosperity gospel" which dictates that God rewards the righteous with material wealth and that hard work is a sign that one has been predestined for Heaven (many of these groups also believe in predestination, which is to a certain extent denial of free will). Create a religion that emphasizes this even more. Righteousness is deemed equivalent to wealth, and those who are rich are rich because they are good. You end up with a nation where the industrial and mercantile classes are seen with almost religious reverance, and I imagine that wealthy parents would pay good money to have their children educated by the best capitalists in the country.

>>56837173
Weren't the Orthodox and Catholic Churches the biggest opponents of Communism in Eastern Europe?

>>56838739
I imagine a machine would be seen as a tool just as much as a hammer, just a much better tool. Mass production on a modern scale would have these folks jizzing their pants.

what this guy said. Make it a religion about capitalism, especially 19th to early 20th century capitalism, when "workers' rights" was a dirty word.

Through Factory you achive Industry. Through Industry you achieve Progress. Through Progress you achive Prosperity
>>
>>56838808
>I imagine a machine would be seen as a tool just as much as a hammer, just a much better tool. Mass production on a modern scale would have these folks jizzing their pants.

Right, so it's more about industry than individual craftsmanship. That will likely affect how they see a lot of stuff.

I don't think I've ever read something that was remotely as stupid as this.

Orthodoxy rejects the entirety of Marx's brainfart.
>>
>We declare that the splendor of the world has been enriched by a new beauty: the beauty of speed. A racing automobile with its bonnet adorned with great tubes like serpents with explosive breath ... a roaring motor car which seems to run on machine-gun fire, is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace.

I seriously don't know why people don't use Italian Futurists for this sort of thing more. They can do it all - avant-garde art, veneration of machinery and modernity, and nationalist vigour. Read the Futurist Manifesto.

The machines are not the object of worship, nor their functions. To build, to maintain, to invent, is to both worship and bring yourself closer to the great architect of the universe, the universe being the largest, most complex and most efficient mechanism ever devised. We should all be so brilliant as to create such a masterwork.

Similar to Dat Yischud from Wolfenstein. They don't build for any particular purpose, and they don't build a particular thing. All that matters is the act of creation.

This is the great schism just waiting to happen. Quality centered adherents wish to create for creations sake. Manufacturers wish to mass produce for some end goal, usually war or profit.

>>56838827
The Amish as extremely divisive, every congregation has their own set of rules. There are some where you're not allowed to use actual buttons on your coat because it's seen as vain, and others where the amish walk around with cellphones on their belts (to be fair it's strictly for business, but still).

fpbp, acknowledged and conceded, but it might be more appropriate to play Thief II and steal the Mechanists. They worshipped the same Master Builder as the Hammerites but placed more emphasis on industry and gadgetry than forging and metallurgy.

I'd stick with the schism of capitalism/communism in this progress/technology religion.

Like, you have a sect that argues that moral good is in the creation and research for the advancement of the human race, and efforts must be shared and directed towards the collective.

The other sect believes that to be prosperous and to advance is a sign of being favored by the great benefactor, and thus one who amasses wealth in the name of progress is benefiting from their worthy reward.

Basically, must the advance of technology and worship be a communal goal, or an individual endeavour?

And then, you have the divides of even older sects of the religion, the most early schism, which was those who deride mass production and believe that crafting and research must be done for their own sake, and the most popular sect that believes that goodness is derived from the archievements made with technology, and that the sacred work is to impart that knowledge for the good of mankind, not to store it in monasteries.

Well, fill in the details of your religion that aren't about industry and make them distinctly non-mechanus. For example, robotics, innovation and deviation from the design is considered heresy in 40k. Maybe yours could value and encourage automation and new designs?
Another thing to note is that the mechanus worships technology. Commerce really doesn't come into it; so your dudes being a little more capitalistic might be a good idea.

Then, ask questions pretending its a real religion and make up answers to your liking. Are there gods or more of just vauge concepts? if there are gods, are they humanoid? What about ritual? do the adherents have a church? Do they seek to convert people?
