For all this talk about having your fighters be so swole they're basically magic, there's a disturbing lack of xianxia here. Why don't you appreciate Chinese Fantasy anon?
>>
>>62291323
Fuck off, week.
>>
Because that shit escalates faster than Shounen Power Creep, which is already godawful. On top of that it lacks the familiarity of japanaboo drawing on western myths, and is entrenched so heavily in its own mythos as to cause some Culture shock. Pun intended.
Manwhas get are only slightly unsettling because Koreaboo is discount Japanaboo no matter how much they hate it, but Chinaboo is stubbornly its own thing and will take a generation or two to expand its market. Also Chinese censorship is a stranglehold on fantasy.
>>
>>62291323
Xianxia is basically Dragonball Z powered by drugs and kung-fu. It doesn't really work to well in stuff not made for that kind of fantasy.

Now that said Exalted has a bit of cultivation stuff in it as part of it's aesthetic.
>>
>>62291323
But I hate china and it's people

That's a very thorough, comprehensive BTFO.
>>
>>62291569

Wouldn't Japanese Westaboo productions be a better term for stuff like Legend of Zelda and such?
>>
>>62291720
Legend of Zelda and MGS stick out the most to me as Japan going "Make it Hollywood".
>>
>>62291569
While I do agree that it's power creep is through the roof, the chinese mythos isn't an inherent drawback. It's a well of ideas that someone could draw from.
>>
>>62291720
>>62292040
It would be a thing if Japan was intentionally aping western styles, regardless of the actual content.
>>
>>62292812
Isn't that even the crux of My Hero Academia: aping western-style superheroes?
>>
>>62291323
>Why don't you appreciate Chinese Fantasy anon?
I do and regularly read xianxia works
>For all this talk about having your fighters be so swole they're basically magic
And most of that talk here is against such a thing, which is a fucking shame since it would dramatically improve the one game D&D whose fans are the quickest to reject it

Xianxia is great and all but in terms of roleplaying unless you are specifically going for super high powered and possibly cosmic shenanigans which I personally love Wuxia would fit better into a more "traditional" fantasy game.
And I'm talking across the board wuxia not just a halfassed attempt with a "monk" class
>>
You know what we need? Useful primers for people who want to run games in cultures they dont know of, its why i cant, but want to run an ancient rome, china, and jap campaigns.

I absolutely love it actually but i'm not sure any system i've seen is actually good for emulating it, particularly the rigid(-ish) demarcation between cultivation realms.
The closest is probably Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate (made by the translator of I Shall Seal The Heavens) but it's more high-powered Wuxia than actual Xianxia with cultivators.

Kind of funny how Xianxia directly ties treasure to "leveling up" like old school D&D does though.

>>
I've thought about doing a custom magic set like this, when I was trying to decide what would best fit a set with an enemy color theme, but I just feel like nobody would get it. They'd get it was chinese I guess but I just don't think there's enough tropes and cool things people would recognize. I think Wizards already kind of did the parts of it everybody would glom onto already. I would assume that also contributes to people not being super big on chinese fantasy settings in general.
>>

This show freaks me the fuck out with its marionettes.

Really cool concept but I could never get through it.
>>
>>62291569
>Because that shit escalates faster than Shounen Power Creep, which is already godawful.
Sounds like it'd fit right in with D&D "go from level 1 to 10 in an ingame month".
>>
>>62298037
Try "go from weak-willed slave to planetbuster in a couple weeks" instead.
>>
>>62298004
I just checked out a little bit. It's unique. It's an interesting, albeit humorously roundabout and complicated, way to sort of ape the look of Dynasty Warriors and such. I was surprised these were real puppets and not 3D animation.
>>
>>62298631
>albeit humorously roundabout and complicated
This is actually common in a LOT of the wuxia genre in general; frequently the protagonist starts out as dramatically weaker then his immediate foes and has to outwit them and there’s lots of psychological mind games as everyone tries to get everyone else to dishonor themselves or loose face, and despite practicing martial arts they often go WAY out of their way to avoid fighting anyone who even remotely might be stronger and instead find ways to trick them.
>>
>>62298670
I just meant that doing something with practical effects is a lot harder and more expensive than doing 3D, which is why I find it funny they chose to go that route and still try to emulate the style of a popular series in a similar genre that DOES use 3D. I assume the puppetry has some additional significance that i'm unaware of as additional reasoning and justification for its use.
>>
>>62291323
fuck this show was cool. i love the craftsmanship. too bad when i saw it on toonami it died in .14 seconds.
>>
>>62298885
Yes, but if you want something to not look like complete garbage, you don't use CGI.
>>
>>62298901
what? season 2 just came out.
>>
>>62298966
it showed up on toonami back in 04 as a western shitty 4kids dub called Wulin Warriors that didn't take the source material seriously, but it at least got me to remember it in the first place and find it again earlier this year. the show's been going on since the 90's originally in thailand if i'm not mistaken and has a ton of story.
>>
>>62291323
But anon, I do. I’m fact I’m working on a home brew system for fantastical adventures in not!china as we speak (though it’s wuxia, rather than xianxia, I admit)

One problem I do see with implementing something like this is just trying to address the massive difference in power levels. It's not uncommon for a single dude a tier higher to one shot 10 people of a lower realm. Addressing that kind of action economy would be slightly difficult especially given the context that it's not like the enemies are actually pieces of paper.

I doubt the fact that some weebshit takes inspiration from Western stories is the reason why it appeals to the West. That would be the mistake of "appealing to Western audiences" and every time Japanese companies try that it doesn't end well (see that DanMachi game that was censored for Western audiences). I'd say the appeal comes precisely from the fact that it is something different from what we're used to. I also don't know what anime you're watching or what manga you're reading but generally speaking Japanese media constantly reference their own myths and history. Sometimes fetishizing Western shit for being cool and exotic or using D&D as a reference guide for fantasy doesn't change that.

That said, you are right that Korean shit is generally discount Japanese shit and Chinese shit is failing to expand in the same way due to censorship. Though we've already seen a handful of Chinese shows gain some traction. There's Cupid's Chocolate, I think that was sorta liked? It also may relate to the fact that China is 20 or so years behind Japan in general development (they're only now crawling out of the "cheap copies of Western electronics" stage to follow Japan into the "develops its own high quality electronics" stage. Huawei for example is at this weird in-between stage where they produce high quality phones mostly by abusing the lack of copyright laws and just aping Samsung and iPhone for a fraction of the price).
>>
>>62300037
It's not so much that Japanese Mythology isn't present in their fantasy, but rather at this point it's either ignorable or sort-of-familiar due to the Japan and the West fetishizing each other's myths for a few decades. Samurais, Oni, Kitsune, etc. all get intermingled with Knights, Trolls, and Lamias enough that both are familiar.
And back in the 80's/90's there was the same friction we see now with Chinese Fantasy because that intermingling didn't yet exist to a substantial enough degree, it was just less noticed because stuff from the Asian market itself was less noticed and the global web hadn't truly invaded every part of modern life. Now China has to deal with the same growing pains Japan did when it expanded its media overseas, but without the veil of obscurity slowly expanding the space it inhabits.

Just to clarify, Studio Pili are the people responsible for the puppetry. Thunderbolt fantasy is a new show they worked on together with Gen Urobachi, but their usual format is a single long running show that we got a part of under the name 'Wulin warriors'. TBF has a much higher overall production value as opposed to their normal show which airs almost daily I think.

So same studios, different productions.

Let's not forget Oda Nobunaga showing up in pretty much everything. Despite being Japan's most popular historical figure, outside of Japan he's only really known to people with an explicit interest in Japan. It's not like Napoleon or something, whose name everyone has at least heard once or twice before.

Now imagine the French faux-anime industry taking the Oda approach with Napoleon
>Napoleon as a little girl
>Napoleion in space
>Napoleon isekai'd to a generic fantasy world
>Or the hit Light Novel "My girlfriend is possessed by the spirit of French general and emperor Napoleon Bonaparte and now she wants me to help her conquer Europe?!"

I'm actually working on a Old5R inspired not!China Card Game, I'm currently at university so it's being put on hold until I go on semester break.
>>
>>62316061
should I just steal all the L5R lore to use for the culture cyclopedia, or is it too unique to the game to be used of 'not-china' or 'not-japan' games?
>>
>>62316068
L5R is pretty unique in the sense that it's romanticised Western textbooks on Japanese history and mythology. I'm being very literal with this wording.

As long as you don't do 8 clans fitting the L5R themes, or using "[Animal] Clan" names, I think L5R could just be a regular tale about Edo period intrigue and easily transferable to other settings. So like, instead of "Lion Clan" it could be the "Takeheda Clan" or something.

It's difficult to make a Xianxia/Wuxia L5R-like and not copy-paste the clans and their associated lore and reskin them.
Pic related is meant to the equivalent to the Crane, but it's got more in common with Phoenix and Dragon.

Just to save my ass; the art is a placeholder, the card's not final, transformative work, etc etc.
>>
>>62316122
I meant less, 8 clans, and more cultural interactions and bushido code and honor. Even if its not 'accurate' its might be close enough to make it easy to use for a non L5R samurai game. basically, I just want useful clumbs of generic info.
>>
>>62316147
Oh, yeah you can totally use it in that case. If you look in the PDF share thread, under the Old5R trove, there should be a splat called "Life/Living in Rokugan" or something to that effect that has a lot of etiquette related things.

Pretty sure AEG just took Samurai norms/lifestyle/politics out of cultural textbooks or from watching Old ass Samurai movies.

And he still won.

>>62293172
My Hero Academia is in a weird spot. Last I heard the mangaka had to basically say "no I'm not taking inspiration from western comics, please ignore the multiple Venom figurines in the pictures of my studio." in order to maintain it's popularity and avoid judgement of the readers who abandon it for being "westaboo".

Conversely, a lot of western readers see it as a blend of our style superheroes golden-age>silver-age (a /co/ expert would have to correct me on ages here) mixed with traditional shounen optimism and story convention, that's either a story you've seen before but with an interesting mix, or a setting you've seen before with a story that's generic-yet-unfamiliar.

More like Japan never really got over America kicking in their door back in the 1800's, then kicking down their cities in the 1900's. They've a long, proud history of telling the rest of the world to fuck off before being dragged kicking and screaming into the then-current era, then immediately returning to their isolationist ways because too much cultural or economic bleeding will destroy their social structure
>>
>>62319518
Honestly it's for the better. I like American culture, but it has a tendency to corrupt and dillute cultures it comes into contact with.

It's not just America.
China bled south into Korea in the third century, which bled into Japan bringing feudalism and writing with it to the then-barbarian Yamato State who promptly adopted it (fuck off Korea reeee) and took over the rest of Japan because if they remained un-unified and backwards they were gonna get annexed.
Then in the seventh century China properly made contact and introduced bureaucracy and Buddhism, which was once again completely adopted and pretended to have always been that way (fuck off China reee) because Buddhism was already there to stay but having Buddhist 'authority' lie in the mainland and not interconnected with Shintoism would let those filthy foreigners lead religious coups.
Then in the 16th century a Chinese ship with Portugese missionaries crashed on a Japanese Island, bringing with them the concepts of Guns, Money, and Jesus (Yeah they didn't really figure out minting currency till the 1500s). These got adopted but so quickly began to spiral out of control and into a massive civil war, a failed invasion of Korea, and the guy who took over after everything went to shit having to lock it all down and close the borders to keep it from repeating.
Then two centuries later in the fucking 1850's America kicked the door in and said "We're trading partners now, because we have ironclads pointed at your capital and you're so fucking isolationist you don't realize Muskets aren't a century out of date. Now take our fucking money so we can fuck with the Europeans."
Then they fought Russia to a standstill twice because Russian supply lines never work outside Russia and especially not over water, while Japan stole all the technology they could get their hands on from dead Russians. Then they went and kicked in China and Korea's teeth because Britain was busy dealing with WW1's aftermath, and Japan was like "Man we can fucking take over the entire Pacific at this rate!"
And then they got nuked and made into America 2.0.
>>
>>62319651
Yeah, that's the thing; we've never seen him exert himself in the slightest in a 1v1 fight, every time it basically went:

>bro are you serious about this
>if you leave right now I won't chase you
>alright fine, your funeral

and then proceeds to effortlessly parry their shit for half a minute before bopping them with his edgeless chunk of wood and making them explode in a fountain of puppet blood.

Even Best 10 Guy was, paraphrasing his own words, just another generic spooky magic warlord, the likes of which he's seen a killed a dozen times to the point he practically considers such adventures passe.

I don't think we have a true handle on just how absurd the power scale is, especially when those from across the wasteland of spirits are concerned; seeing them get serious this season will likely make anything from S1 look like childs play.
>>
>>62319792
tl;dr, Japan's entire history is suddenly and abruptly jumping from one era of social and technological development to the next, then pretending they were always that way and will always be that way, until they get so far behind that someone forces them into the next era all over again. But because they revise their own view of history each time, it's always the 'barbarians' fucking shit up and never the fact that Japan repeatedly gets so backwards they have to start executing people to maintain the status-quo, when instead they could just pay attention to the world around them like everyone else.

KOJIRO: Well, Musashi, you've finally made it... despite my detailed directions.
MUSASHI: Ah, Sasaski Kojiro! You're here! I hope you're ready for an unforgettable duel!
MUSASHI: Oh, egads! I forgot my sword! But what if... I took this oar and disguise it as my own sword? Oh ho ho ho... delightfully devilish, Musashi!
KOJIRO: Musashi!
MUSASHI: Kojiro, I was just, uh... sharpening my sword by the beach. Iaijutsu exercise! Care to duel me?
KOJIRO: Why is your sword made of wood, Musashi?
MUSASHI: Uhh... no! That isn't wood. It's lacquered. Lacquer on this folded steel katana I have! Ooo... lacquered steel!
[a few moments later]
MUSASHI: Kojiro, I hope you're ready to bleed all over my bokken!
KOJIRO: I thought you had lacquered steel katana.
MUSASHI: D'oh, no. I said lacquer-like katana! That's what I call bokkens!
KOJIRO: You call bokkens "lacquer-like katana"?
MUSASHI: Yes. It's a regional dialect!
KOJIRO: Uh-huh... uh, what region?
MUSASHI: Uhh... Honshu?
KOJIRO: Really? Well I'm from Fukui prefecture and I've never heard anyone use the phrase "lacquered katana".
MUSASHI: Oh, not in Fukui, no. It's a Harima expression.
KOJIRO: I see. You know, your bokken looks quite similar to that oar on your boat there.
MUSASHI: Oh ho ho ho... no, patented Miyamoto bokken, old family heirloom.
KOJIRO: A bokken?
MUSASHI: Yes.
KOJIRO: Yeah, so you called them "lacquered katana" despite the fact they are obviously part of an oar.
MUSASHI: Ye- hey- you know, the- one thing I should- excuse me for one second.
KOJIRO: Of course.

MUSASHI: A second sword?
KOJIRO: Uh- A SECOND SWORD, AT THIS TIME OF YEAR, AT THIS TIME OF DAY, IN THIS PART OF THE COUNTRY, LOCALIZED ENTIRELY WITHIN YOUR LEFT HAND!?
MUSASHI: Yes!
KOJIRO: May I see it?
MUSASHI: No.
MUSASHI'S BOATMAN: Musashi, how are we gonna get back when you carved both my oars?!
MUSASHI: No worries- it's just a second sword!

>On top of that it lacks the familiarity of japanaboo drawing on western myths
>It's not so much that Japanese Mythology isn't present in their fantasy, but rather at this point it's either ignorable or sort-of-familiar due to the Japan and the West fetishizing each other's myths for a few decades. Samurais, Oni, Kitsune, etc. all get intermingled with Knights, Trolls, and Lamias enough that both are familiar.

Literally the most popular animes from Japan draws on Chink Myth/Fiction. Dragonball Z and Hokuto no Ken comes to mind.

In fact most of Anime caters to Eastern audiences really, it has a fuckton of nuances that White boi misses out.

>Hokuto no Ken

I´m trying to recall that famous ancient chinese novel about kungfu brothers punching FUKC HYUGE dudes, many of which are modeled on parodies of military units, in a postapocalyptical future China.

And the Monkey King is a popular figure in India, China, Southeast Asia and Japan.
>>
>>62317704

Not really an expert but Id say its actually more like the bronze age in which cape comics became more down to earth and socially conscious but still pretty optimistic
>>
>>62323931
Yeah but that's not the point. Enough Anime Fantasy draws on or uses stuff close enough to Western Fantasy to be relatable. The nuances don't matter, just the general ability to digest, which Chinamanime (and specifically Xianxia and Wuxia) just straight doesn't have. Japanime and its discount-version Koreanime had just enough stuff to mesh and were aggressive enough in pushing it during the 90's and 00's that the more esoteric stuff has been absorbed by pop-culture.

It's not that Xianxia won't ever become popular enough to be recognized outside of the PRC/Central Asia, it's just that that shit is gonna take time and people pushing it. Exactly the same shit Japanese Fantasy had to go through. The issue though is that Chinese Media sees more incentive to appeal solely to the Asian Market rather than try and muscle-in on Japan's slice of the World Market. So they aren't making efforts to push their product, make it relatable, or draw in those White Bois who gobble up anime. So it's gonna take longer.
Christ it's not rocket science, look at the entire context of a post rather than defaulting to shitposting and only analyzing single points.

>>
>>62291569

>>
>>62327340
Wuxia=“Woo-ZIA”
>Kind of like low fantasy in that most of the conflicts are human in nature and revolves around human organizations fighting and dying for honor and glory. Kungfu will be common and often have magical properties at higher levels, but true “magic” will be rare to nonexistent since most Chinese folklore says only immortals can use magic. No monsters or demons, though those that do appear if they do are often tremendously powerful relics of a bygone age.
Xianxia=Zian-ZIA
>Like wuxia but has a lot more open magic and immortals and superhumans, with demonic gods and other such beings often being the main villain. Still lots of Kung fu and human melodrama, but roughly the Chinese equivalent of high fantasy.
>>
>>62300037
You got a source?
>>
>>62327340
In Wuxia, magic is decently low-tier, monsters likewise and most of the people there in the actual powercircles are decent folk trying to better things.

In Xianxia, there is a 99% chance that your entire village/city/planet/galaxy will be blown up by a stray magic spell, or that a fuckoff huge monstrosity will come and eat everything. The last 1% is for when Cultivators (the guys with the crazy magic spells) actually come kicking down your door to rape your women and men, and then blow everything up for laughs.
>>
>>62327552
So Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon would be wuxia I assume? Sorry for my plebness, but that and Thunderbolt Fantasy are really the only Chinese shows I know much about.
>>
>>62328601
Crouching Tiger is about as wuxia as it gets yeah. Xianxia is more OG Dragonball where Goku wanders around fighting demons and meeting immortal hermits with a couple of blatanttly inhuman supernatural techniques like the kamehameha and flight.

>>
Also, can anyone explain the style choice to have the narrator say something (probably) poetic at the beginning or when characters show up? Is this a thing to the genre?
>>
>>62329430
>Is this a thing to the genre?
Yes, it's also interesting to note that in the traditional puppetry there is only one voice actor (a man) who voices all the characters.

For the Japanese dub, they have a normal voice cast. But the voice you hear during any poem is the actual lone voice actor speaking in Taiwanese.
>>
>>62329430
If I remember right, the poem is usually said at the character's introduction. But Thunderbolt Fantasy's writer decided that it would be better for the poems to be delivered at an important moment for that character, like when Ken/Juan's poem is recited when he steels his resolve, or when Sho Fu Kan/Shang's poem finally shows.

I don't particularly enjoy the main system /tg/ recommends for the genre, Legends of the Wulin. It lacks customization options and combat is a slog.

Is there another system anons could recommend?
>>
>>62332730
Perhaps Wandering Heroes of Ogre Gate? It's PWYW, clearly made by a passionate author, and has 60 full pages of kung fu techniques, some being quite specific. So rather than LoTW going, you choose a style and you get these techniques, this game goes, here's damn near every technique the kung fu movies show you, build your own style.

I haven't played it though, so I don't know if combat is a slog.

Here is a technique that replicates Sekiha Love Love Tenkyoken from G Gundam.

THE PHOENIX DRAGON STRIKE (SECRET)
Discipline: Neigong
Skill: Arm Strike Against Evade
Type: Normal

Qi: 6 You and a partner touch hands left to right, and immediately extend your remaining hands toward the enemy, unleashing a powerful flood of Qi that replicates the primordial energy of the Phoenix and Dragon.

Make an Arm Strike Skill roll against the Evade of everyone in a 10-foot by 300-hundred foot line per Rank of Neigong. On a Success it does 3d10 Open Damage plus 3 Extra Wounds to everyone in it strikes.

This requires two practitioners to employ. One must be a man and the other must be a woman. Use the Arm Strike Skill of the person with the lowest Rank.

Cathartic: This does 6d10 Open Damage plus 6 Extra Wounds to everyone it strikes. When used Cathartically this ability automatically destroys any spirits or demons.

Back when the first season came out I remember a wuxia anon saying that Syo's techniques, which made their victims chi turn against them, were usually techniques used by villians in the genre. If the Butcher's following this trope, maybe Syo used to be a villain, or was trained by one.

To provide a bit of context, the proper names of most characters isn't used as often as you'd think due to some weird subtitling decisions in the show itself; namely, the subs out there read off their chinese name, while the actual names being spoken are japanese, and in most cases look and sound absolutely nothing alike.

This led to confusion in early /a/ threads, and resulted in them eventually giving up on giving a shit about the proper names of pretty much anyone other than the MC, and either using secondary canon titles like Screaming Phoenix Killer, or creating easily identifiable nicknames like Vape Duck or Best 10 Guy.

How does one read a huge fucking book about autistic infights between Daoism and Buddhism triggered by the fact that the translation of Buddhist texts used daoist terminology and the faith thus required some extra work to draw a clear line between it and its "parent" faith and conclude that it´s an indian story?

Especially when Hanuman is featured in a completely separate epic that isn´t even alluded to in The Journey to the West even though it features multiple chapters dealing with Sun Wukong´s background from his birth to the point where he got locked into stone at a mountain pass.

What non-East Asian cultures would mesh well or interestingly poorly with the themes and concepts of Wuxia/Xianxia/etc?

My personal vote is for British/English/Celtic/etc., particularly the stories of Arthur and co. I think a retelling of the story in the style of Xianxia and maintaining/incorporating all of the weirder supernatural stuff in some of the stories would be extremely interesting
>>
>>62343916
The Matter of Britain as wuxia would work a lot better if you removed anything and everything related to the Grail quest. A supernatural mandate that requires ACTUAL purity and honor, rather than just face, breaks a lot of the social fun in wuxia.

There's a bunch of webnovels for you to read, then. At a minimum: I Shall Seal the Heavens, Coiling Dragon, Battle Through the Heavens, Warlock of the Magus World, Wu Dong Qian Kun and uhh... Sovereign of the Three Realms. Emperor's Domination and History's Number 1 Founder are good too, but the former is, "I don't care about power level, gimme keikaku" and the latter is, "Keikaku, keikaku, reference, joke, keikaku, keikaku."
>>
>>62291569
Xianxia "power creep" isn't actually a problem though, because as the power level goes up, the scale expands. In fact I think that western games can learn from it and imitate xianxia instead of doing things like modern where the power level increases but the scale stays pretty much the same.

At a guess, it’s because anime has the characters go back to being “normal people” when the fight is over, so there’s a dissonance between the martial sequences and the character building sequences. In this case, however, it never stops being appropriate to the setting and events depicted.

Is Linley Chaotic Evil or Lawful Evil?
>>
So did anime steal wuxia visual tropes (a lot of the mannerisms, sword energy explosions, crazy sick moves, etc) or does wuxia draw from anime to attract more modern audiences? Because I noticed a lot of similarities

You should try to look beyond superficialities, then you´d realize that wuxia stories don´t operate anything like those of manga or anime at all.

I´d suggest reading scanlations of Xixia and Wuxia comics, but I doubt you´re actually fluent in using your eyes at this point.

Wuxia has influenced a lot of shit from anime to video games to movies and television
For a more comprehensive explanation than I'm able to give check this out http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=31707
This thread provides an excellent breakdown of what wuxia is, what it's common tropes and character archetypes are, and it's evolution and impact on media in the 20th century

I did love his ability to predict matches before swords were even drawn.

I’d say that a lot of that is feeding off each other.
I’d bet that a lot of modern Wuxia writers grew up watching Dragonball or Deathnote.
>>
Anyone know of any dark/depressing Wuxia like Death Sutra?

Worth noting that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is based on the Crane Iron Pentalogy written in the 40s and only loosely follows the source material.
