What are some good encounters, both normal and paranormal, for a group of PCs to have in an abandoned space station?
>>
>>62957707
Any more details beyond "abandoned space station"?
>>
They find a security room with security cam monitors.
>>
>>62957707
The PCs see one of the former crew members tapping on a window from the outside, asking to be let back in.
>>
They can find that the crew of the station have strange rough incisions in the back of their heads. Like a small saw was used on them. Not all of the crew have this. Some we're simply shot in the chest. Not just security were killed this way. It seems entirely at random.

>Cryptic messages about killing rats smeared on the walls in blood
>Bone piles striped clean of flesh even though the station has only been abandoned for a week or two
>Constant feeling of being watched
>Scratching in the walls, chittering in the vents
>The sounds are coming from some escaped lab rats that were genetically modified
>Maybe one bites a PC when they pick it up
>Discover they are actually a secret bioweapon that hunts in swarms
>They must be destroyed lest they spread
Or
>The composition of the station air is not quite right, forcing the PC's to keep their helmets on and make frequent trips to resupply their oxygen tanks
>Dead bodies are strewn through the halls, mutilated
>Shadows moving out of the corner of your eye
>Laughing too faint to be heard clearly, might just be the machinery of the station
>A lunatic attacks the party without a helmet
>Soon the PC's discover more as they move further into the station
>They discover a terrorist group has introduced a chemical into the air, turning the former workers into murderers
>To cure them the party must turn on the air recyclers, from the central ventilation control in the heart of the station

I have 1 or 2 more from that same comic. I've been wondering the same thing.
>>
Best way to make the PCs scarted is to remove them of their weapons. Take away the one thing they use to solve every life threating problem, replace it with creative ways to destroy these problems. Taking away their reliable means of escape is also very panic inducing.
>>
>>62958293
I know what sharted is, I assume scarted is the new scared brap, right?

Jokes aside I can see some interesting possibilities here. Station has security checkpoints that refuses to let the PCs pass if they have verbotten items like weapons and maybe other kinds of tech. Probably auto-registered them as visitors so they don't have the clearance. This means every time they enter a new area they have to scrounge for whatever weapons they can find or build and inevitably to progress or even backtrack they risk losing it all again. Kind of like a location specific version of the old Resident Evil inventory box.

I figure once they progress far enough they can find a way around these restrictions. Hacking I find is just too easy. Point out how the station security system would naturally be the most secure part of the on-board computer network and if it detected tampering would fuck up their lives in so many interesting ways.
>>
>>62958565
Mix in some nasty mobile security drones that will also take umbrage if players are packing forbidden items, turning into nasty fights or forcing them to only carry small, concealable items.
>>
>>62958565
>sharted
>scarted
heh yup typo

>This means every time they enter a new area they have to scrounge for whatever weapons they can find

Exactly, Dead Space did this, forcing the player to use a projectile cutting tool to dismember the freaky aliens. Replacement cartrages were limited. Shooting at things that explode becomes the best way to conserve "ammo" and take out attackers. But just when they get used to how to kill them you need to change up the method by introducing a stranger alien that doesn't fall for the same player tricks.

I like the idea where some kind of outbreak his the station - zombies, mutants, alien STD, doesn't really matter - and despite being completely twisted and lethal to the PCs nevertheless the damn security system still recognizes them as duly authorized members of the crew. Flip the script on the poor players. They're normal but the system doesn't recognize them or thinks they're tourists with no real authority. If it catches them attacking one of the original twisted members of the crew it will consider them engaging in unlawful violence and join the fight against them!

Since we're talking Dead Space that reminds me of the Sprawl's security system where you can fool it by offering the scanner pieces of dead people authorized to pass. Well, in this case their RIG was the key, I think. Imagine the PCs trying to capture or lure enemies into areas to unlock them. Could be fun?

The alarm on your ships proximity detector sounds and checking you radar and scanners you find you have come upon a derelict spacecraft drifting dark and silent. There are no responses to any of your communication signals and all power readings from the mystery ship are at zero. Common space knowledge or a copy of Jane’s Galactic tells you the craft is a typical older heavy freighter. Visual inspection of the vessel indicates the ship has been modified for prospecting or heavy salvage. To the outer hull has been added a reinforced nose section to push small spacecraft or asteroids and a towing brace protrudes from the aft. On the underside of the vessel were added reinforced grasping landing claws and a lazar drill has replaced one weapon mount.

The craft is drifting with a slight spin and with a moderate piloting effort you can dock with it. The ship can be boarded through any of the airlocks using manual override. Inside all is dark and there is no power to any system. Although the hull has not been breached the air is stale and UN breathable, the environmental systems are damaged or beyond it’s limit.

Every deck of the ship is still and silent, there are no signs of battle or other disaster. The ships gear is in disorder but it is hard to tell if it was the former crews habits or a hasty abandoning of the ship. The vessel seems to be intact except for some smashed critical components in the engine room. But without those parts the ship cannot be powered up.

In the control cabin you find the only crewmember on board. He is sitting on the deck leaning back against the bulkhead next to an open repair panel for the communication system. The crewman is dressed in a spacesuit with his helmet on the floor next to him and stares out with an expressionless leathery face having been naturally mummified by years in space. In one withered bare hand he holds a standard mineral sample tube. The other hand is missing; the shredded arm of the space suit is folded over and wrapped in space tape.

A moderate medical exam will show the crew member had starved to death before the environmental system failed. The remains of the left arm indicate the left hand has been chewed off and the partly healed stump is sealed with space epoxy and wrapped in space tape.

Testing of the contents of the tube reveal it to be almost 100% pure Baloneyium one of the most valuable minerals in the solar system as it is used to make power rings a critical part of rocket engines.

With a repair roll of –2 an alternate power source can be hooked to the ships computer and with a hack attempt at –2 the ships logs can be searched.

The abandoned ship is the free trader and salvage vessel Hephaestus out of Ceres. The last entry dated fifty years ago mentions approaching an abandoned pre fall mining asteroid to search for salvage or minerals and gives the coordinates.

You have found the location of Asteroid Z and can add it to your navigation computer

That is as far as I got the background of the station is it was an oldmining station used as a research lab . They were experimenting with an easy to grow fungus food that also gave off Oxygen and was slightly luminescent.. so in the 500 years of the Solar dark age the mine has been inhabited with the antecedents of the crew and staff now half blind cannibals

>There is an expertly cooked meal, still warm, sitting in the mess complete with table settings, just enough for the PC's with one extra seating. If they ignore it and come back later, there will be signs that someone came back and ate some.
>The gravity plating in the cargo bay is damaged causing supply crates to randomly and dangerously shift around.
>There is an room with a sealed door but several large observation windows. Inside is a floating corpse in a space suit. There appears to be another way in. By the time they find a way in, the grav plating in that room will have turned back on somehow.
>There is a hall 4 way intersection, 3 of the paths have been blockaded and a "last stand" defensive position has been set up. There are two empty space suits that have been torn apart and bloodied and a pile of burned out weapons. All the weapons have been locked to "Laser Tag/Practice mode".
>The lighting system power cycles exactly every 20 minutes. Attempts at finding the cause via the diagnostic system point to a possible short located somewhere near the source of the water pipe tapping.
>At some point, the docking clamp will fail and release the PC's ship and set it adrift. At some further point, they'll find their ship docked again with no sign of anyone being aboard.
>The station map is slightly wrong, with more or less rooms than shown and hallways that shouldn't exist but plainly do. All the primary systems are where they should be, but nothing else really is.
>Either there is something in the vents, or they're shifting around due to temperature changes/gravity shifting. Also they're much too small to fit a person.
>There are small sticky notes with friendly messages and motivational poems hidden throughout the station, under bunk pillows, behind doors, on chair cushions, behind maintenance panels. It's not clear if they're to the PC's or the old station crew.

The precense of creatures in space

>Solar Scale
These are creatures that tend to stay within a given solar system. Belter Worms are common living inside of large asteroids that hunt Star Moths and other such Solar Scale creatures

>Astral/Celestial Scale

Astral Scale creatures are essentially living biomes that have their environments where Solar scale and smaller creatures tend to live in. They are usually found near stars as their primary means obtaining energy is through photosynthesis as well as consuming any asteroids they may come across but also gain energy from the ecosystems that develop inside of them as well.

Does anyone have that screencap that talks about the perils of contacting other space-faring civilizations because they'll know immediately that it's someone else capable of destroying them, and will take pre-emptive action to do it first?

It's the one where it compares it to being in Central Park at night.
>>
A single live crew member directs the players on radio. As they progress, they come across long, flesh-like tubes or threads that stretch across entire hallways, usually ending in vents or snaking past into wall circuitry. He tells them not to worry about them and not to touch them; he'll explain later.
As they go on, they find a hand attached to one end of a cluster of such tubes.
Then they find other organs.
And then they meet the head.
The crew member's entire body has been carefully taken apart with its internal structure intact, and stretched throughout the space station.
>>
>>62965782
The first axiom is that survival is the primary need of civilization. Therefore, civilizations will do whatever it takes to ensure their own survival. The second axiom is that civilizations always grow and expand, but the amount of matter and resources in the universe are finite.

So every civilization other than your own is a likely threat. At the very least, they are occupying a planet that you could use to expand your civilization. At worst, they are more technologically advanced and will wipe out your civilization to expand their own.

When two civilizations meet, they will want to know if the other is going to be friendly or hostile. One side might act friendly, but the other side won't know if they are just faking it to put them at ease while armies are built in secret. This is called chains of suspicion. You don't know for sure what the other side's intentions are. On Earth this is resolved through communication and diplomacy. But for civilizations in different solar systems, that's not possible due to the vast distances and time between message sent and received. Bottom line is, every civilization could be a threat and it's impossible to know for sure, therefore they must be destroyed to ensure your survival.
>>
>>62967042
You might be thinking that if an advanced civilization detects the radio signals from Earth then they would know that we are less advanced and therefore not a threat. But again you have to consider the vast distance and time it takes for those signals to travel. Even if a nearby civilization (only 10 or 20 light years away) detects us, it would take hundreds or even thousands of years for them to reach us and that is plenty of time for a technological explosion. If they don't attack us at once, then we might develop technology fast enough to catch up and threaten them.

It won't be like Star Trek. Without faster than light travel, there won't be any communication, diplomacy or trade with alien races. It's kill or be killed.

So that's why we haven't heard a peep from other civilizations. The universe is a dark forest where every civilization is a silent hunter. They desperately try to stay undetectable while hunting for other planets to colonize and threats to destroy.
>>
Over time the party finds some diary which indicates a plot to overthrow the station and destroy the advanced technology, resulting in the eventual degradation into a feudal society.
The last few entires of the diary indicate that a bomb had been planted somewhere sensitive and that enough security had been bribed that the coupe could begin.

Imagine yourself taking a stroll through Manhattan, somewhere north of 68th street, deep inside Central Park, late at night. It would be nice to meet someone friendly, but you know that the park is dangerous at night. That’s when the monsters come out. There’s always a strong undercurrent of drug dealings, muggings, and occasional homicides. It is not easy to distinguish the good guys from the bad guys. They dress alike, and the weapons are concealed. The only difference is intent, and you can’t read minds. Stay in the dark long enough and you may hear an occasional distance shriek or blunder across a body. How do you survive the night? The last thing you want to do is shout, “I’m here!” The next to last thing you want to do is reply to someone who shouts, “I’m a friend!” What you would like to do is find a policeman, or get out of the park. But you don’t want to make noise or move towards a light where you might be spotted, and it is difficult to find either a policeman or your way out without making yourself known. Your safest option is to hunker down and wait for daylight, then safely walk out. There are, of course, a few obvious differences between Central Park and the universe. There is no policeman. There is no way out. And the night never ends.

I've never really had much luck with horror at the table. Games in that genre, sure, but as a more mechanical check the box thing. This isn't to say we don't still enjoy it, but there's no real chills along with the thrills. Atmospheric tricks don't really work. Dark? People can't see their rolls. Spooky music? People complain they can't understand the player across the table (especially that git who never speaks up, yes YOU Ted, god DAMMIT man).

With the right DM and material it's possible at first but typically the longer the game goes, the more players figure out the rules of whatever they're facing, or are familiar with the environment, then it turns into the basic "how do I exploit what I know to turn this game into Easy Mode". Understandable, I suppose. Happens even in horror games. Once you've got if figured out, once you've found the critter's weakness or amassed heavy weapons or plenty of ammo it's just pure by the numbers rush to the ending. There are ways to still surprise them or mix up the rules on them, but the more you do that the more likely players are to start accusing you of railroading or BSing them for plot reasons, and I guess that's true even if it's just because you want the game to be scarier for them. Even though the DM controls the monsters, etc, they hate to feel like you're actively against them. Rocks fall, everyone dies. Or they walk into a room full of gazebos and the door suddenly seals shut.

Write five three-line stories about deceased crew members.
>John was worried about his job
>John took credit for a fluke breakthrough on one set of experimental data
>John found his anxiety worsen as the success brought favor and scrutiny too.
Drop a line from each story in as an environmental detail every so often. Audio logs, emails open on consoles, official documents, CCTV recordings. The stories should merely highlight a short section of the arc of five lives.
Know where each of those five corpses can be found.

The second 8 issue story was pretty good too:
https://readcomiconline.to/Comic/John-Carpenter-s-Tales-of-Science-Fiction-Vortex

I say that despite it feeling like a massive ripoff of The Thing especially since it's "story idea from the mind of John Carpenter". It's kind of an interesting take on The Thing, at least, making it seem more benevolent up to a point but the setting is interesting and you kind of care for some of the characters.

There's a third story arc, The Standoff, which takes place on Earth when an alien ship crashes into a max security prison hellhole and all shit breaks loose, in more ways than one. The story has been stuck on issue 3 out of 5 since September and the wait has gotten pretty annoying.

https://readcomiconline.to/Comic/John-Carpenter-s-Tales-of-Science-Fiction-The-Standoff

I also hate how every single fucking story has involved body horror. I know it's John Carpenter and all but where's something like Escape from New York, They Live, even The Fog? Hell, Prince of Darkness was just possession. Same with Ghosts of Mars, I guess, since those possessed by Martian "ghosts" were heavy into self-mutilation rather than mutation.

Frankly this is an underrated idea. Especially if players start without environmental suits or they get careless and leave their helmets lying around. Find or mod a system that includes includes potential damage to suits. Tears, cracked visors, broken seals, etc. Adhesive foam sprays, duct tape, and other fixes.

Also try to find or create a reliable asphyxiation mechanic which allows plenty of time for the player to panic as the situation grows increasingly dire that's a good way to go. A morale/panic system that increasingly hits them with negative roll modifiers is a bit cruel imo but if you're into that why not. Players will be horrified enough dealing with their own shitty rolls as their characters slowly suffocate.

I wish I could find it again but there was a thread some time ago that took a turn for the weird. An anon was wondering about a scifi setting where when a PC died they were just cloned. People started expanding this from how to keep death from feeling cheap, i.e. losing the equivalent of levels, to maybe clones can come out wrong and a player's stats end up shifted about. This turned into full on what if the cloning process has a chance of going really fucking batshit WTF wrong. The end result wound up as a setting idea that was run something like a goddamn Saw movie in terms of lethality to the characters with a chance of turning into The Crazies. Others wanting to push it further into clones that end up as full blown demonic creatures Xenomorphing their way through the facility.

Combine it with something like >>62958818 where it merely looks like an abandoned station. Turns out it was meant to be a utopia where even death had been conquered, only their plan to make themselves immortal via 3D printing new bodies was corrupted and society ripped itself to pieces. Just one fuckup rampaging around but the more people who died the more came back wrong and the problem quickly escalated. The original people are all still very much around, you just wouldn't really recognize them.

Want to scare players? Give them something where death isn't just to be feared, death will only make things worse. Let them struggle against the broken station and broken inhabitants at the same time. No matter how many times they put these freaks down they'll just get printed again someplace else and probably wind up an even worse threat. Worse when they realize they're now part of that same system. If they don't solve the problem or escape they'll wind up just like the rest.

Was some kind of glitch? Rogue AI? Sabotage? An infection in whatever material it uses to print new bodies? Or do the PCs just not give a shit and want to GTFO?

Yeah, or you could be mobile and not get close to whatever is shooting at you. If you change vector and have like 300.000km between you and the target, a mass driver round has like zero chance to hit or your own mass drivers have enough time to put a round in its path.

It's very, very difficult to accelerate a mass large enough to cause planetary devastation to a speed that it is impossible to shoot down.

With equal tech level such attacks are defendable. So unless we're talking about an impossibly advanced alien civilization.

In that case though they could probably build ball kicking robots to conquer our planet and we'd be screwed.

>What are some good encounters for a group of PCs to have in an abandoned space station?
NORMAL:
Life support offline, frozen corpses floating everywhere. depending on the type of space station, research, military, shipbuilding, or space colony with families, the corpses could vary.
Long tube/ passageway running from top to bottom of space station. Currently filled with detrius. If the artificial gravity is turned on, the detrius slams through the bottom of the space station and now you've got a breach on top of whatever else you've encountered.
NBC weapon testing. (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical)
Space Station AI is caught in a recursive loop: Tries to power on one section, restore life support, whatever, but another section fails. AI attempts to restore that section, and another section fails.
Space Station has been commandeered by a hostile power.
Space Station has been commandeered by a hostile power, but died shortly afterwards.
Space Station is of alien origin and has only been discovered because ancient cloaking technology has failed.
Space Station has been abandoned and the AI has become bored. Using satellite-based lasers it has begun "doodling" on the planet below. (shamelessly ripped off from Cowboy Bebop)

It suffers from studio interference forcing the director to cut a lot of the more fucked up shit he wanted, but that actually adds to the film since the brief snippets we do get allows the imagination to paint a much more terrible picture of what happened to the original crew.
All in all it's a well made haunted house story in space that seems to take inspiration from Alien and Hellraiser in equal measure

>Holodeck is still on, the NPCs waiting for the players to return. The NPCs will try to interrogate the PCs for the whereabouts of the original players.
>The station AI has run out of some exotic materials and is recycling corpses from the morgue for drones. Think biological computers. Will try to add PCs to systems.
>Cafeteria is completely abandoned with it looking like it was very suddenly abandoned. The AI chef has been cooking a feast with whatever it can scrounge and will attempt to aggressively feed the players. Very loose grasp of what is edible, expect a salad of fiberglass served with hydrofluroic acid.
>The autonomous repair drones have malfunctioned and turned parts of the station into lethal nonsensical death traps.
>The medbay is fully stocked with nearly all sorts of vital medicine from stimpacks to anti-biotics, except for sedatives which are empty.
>Several experimental EVA suits contained backups of their owner's personality. Years have degraded their personalities, resulting in EVA suits that walk around out of their own volition screaming strange questions.
>The station manufacturing wing...was producing something. The design doesn't make sense, at least to human minds. No design is loaded into the fabricators, the machines are doing of their own accord. Will respond violently if interrupted.

One of my favorite gimmicks is modern yet impossible. What I mean is imagine tomorrow that NASA reveals they've discovered what appears to be a duplicate of the International Space Station tidally locked to the dark side of the moon? Or it could be slightly less than modern. Something that confirms to 60s-70s era Soviet space design. An apparently man made structure where one should not be yet no agency on Earth claims responsibility, at least publicly.

PCs are the first manned mission sent to investigate after drones proved ineffective due to communication issues with remote piloting. Team unable to achieve connection to drone on approach. Docking is successful. Entry is easily achieved. Open unsealing the station contact with the drone is reestablished. It seems to be deeper inside the structure and appears to be set to standby mode. Upon examination of the entryway it is discovered that all writing on the walls, despite conforming to familiar alphabets, appear to be complete gibberish. In due time the team will discover that the interior compartments of the station far exceed what could possibly be contained within the exterior dimensions. The hatch back to their ship is sealed and all communication with Earth is lost.

"Space...shit."
"Yeah."
"Like some kind of cool outer spacey alien technology or-?"
"No I mean shit, command. Actual goddamn shit. Turns out space is actually alive and it's been using this station for its personal crapper. Space feces is everywhere. The floors, smeared on the walls, pumping through the stations pipes. We've been breathing it in this entire time, too. And let me tell you that was not chocolate that came out of the soft serve machine in the station foodcourt."
"Spaceshit?"

The rudimentary A.I. of the base didn't go insane or anything. Someone switched it off when everything was still running fine. It went dark and all was fine, it wakes up to find that there has been nuclear war, its crew are dead, its been dark for centuries and some people who only heard of the civilization that created it in history books are wandering around. It genuinely has no idea what the fuck just happened and has gone through disbelief, shock, sorrow, resentment, anger and acceptance of the situation in less than five minutes. What if you have something like:
Having one of the crew members become infatuated with a "survivor" of an AI rampancy, however as time progresses, said survivor needs to keep going back to private quarters or such to "clean themselves up" only to come back with a fresh scar or open wound. As more time goes on the "survivor" tries to steer the love interest into deeper waters and constantly getting the love interest to be paranoid around his own group. Eventually it could be revealed through holo-vids, recordings and text files that said "survivor" is actually dead and has been reanimated by the AI and inserted itself (ala EDI in Mass Effect 3) by hacking into and engineering various modifications in the "survivor" in an attempt to get off the station.

Naturally however, you want to keep the spirit of complete horror there too, so have various things that the AI has created thrown at the PCs (such as the various genetically engineered remains of the crew) to keep them on their toes and generally make the AI's plans that much easier. Additionally, you can also do what >>62958818 said and have the ships automated security run on a closed system. As the crew of the ship were already distrusting of AI's and the ship builders/engineers aren't retarded as scientists would like to believe. Therefore aren't going to give control of an autocannon in the mess hall to an AI that would be slightly tempted after a long day of monitoring the amount of shit blasted out of the airlock. So not only do they have to come up with creative ways of killing the AI and it's denizens, but also either avoiding the Security or sabotaging it as it's causing more harm than good

station seems abondoned
but it reacts like its still crewed and operational only.. you never see them or hear them on comms at least till your onboard.
you can hear them on coms sometime (becoming increasing frantic about unexplained disappances and strange comm noises) they never respond to you though
as you explore the station you find piles of clothes and tools.
occationally you'll hear comm from "survivors" in sections behind you if you return to investigate thing may have changed as if someone was there but you never find anybody or any bodies.
station becomes increasingly hostile as you move through it trying to stop you in increasingly violent ways and even self-destructive ways
if they reach the "end" having explored the station discover a record by the crew
reporting a un-recognized docking, camras show the airlock opening to the void but it doesn't decompress, everyone sent to investigate vanishes leaving only inorganic items behind
then connected sections detect un-explained records of access and have people disappearing
so they sealed off parts of the station
computer overrides are used so they disconnect the computer
but then systems are being overidden manually. so they start sabatoging/venting sections and setting traps flooding sections with radiation ect.
it doesn't work whatever it is continues to work its way through the station till they get at last to the bridge/engineering.
where the last of crew were holding out. record end as they enter.
you get the idea, then if you want they now have to escape the station as the victims of new weird unexplained shit happens.

Honestly, it seems cool as a game experience, but as a sci fi story on its own merits it struck me as kinda smug. The incomprehensible aliens are ultimately smug and petty, overplaying the whole 'we're doomed by an RKV because we ever broadcast a radio signal' trope. That may just be because I find the idea dull and presumptive, similar to lots of hard sci-fi tropes that seem really self assured in their absolutist predictions. Not to be obtuse, but it feels like the the same logic of inevitable escalation that would conclude nobody makes it off their homeworld without reducing it to a nuclear wasteland, or develops total war without wiping themselves out, etc. Similarly, the bugs' whole thing about cooperating with another species, its not the exposing of one's jugular its posed as, symbiosis is not some absurd rarity in nature, or even in human history.

I always figured the implication was that they used the main tool to gouge out the lines as opposed to just using the treads to mark the ground and hope it would be visible from the Earth, so the treads themselves are largely ignored. Even a heavy vehicle would weigh a lot less on the moon so it wouldn't rip up the ground so bad.

For whatever it is worth about ten years later this finally showed up again revealing even shittier attempt to draw the letters and more vehicles were present. Bigger question here is how the bodies were skeletonized like given the relative sterility of the environment.
