I'm a fan of these ideas myself.

The Pushmi-Pullyu know that they are magical or fae in nature and that they were created, not born. They also know that they each have specific, innate talents and abilities that make them especially proficient at and enamored with certain callings.

They wander the world searching for their lost histories and seeking out their creator, using the skills they've had since their creation to help people and make names for themselves in the hopes that they will draw their creator's attention and make them proud.

I think that the part I’mmost interested in, given what’s been talked about and written so far, is that Pushmi-Pullyus are a race of unique individuals united in a search for meaning and for their creator. Most races in fantasy have their patron deities, their families and their livelihoods, but the Pushmi-Pullyus seem very much like wayward orphans trying to find their way, and that’s really interesting to me.

Or are they indifferent, just as likely to destroy or ignore the Pushmi-Pullyu than anything else?

I'd like to think that the Pushmi-Pullyu would be likely to ignore such questions, as doing so would undermine their "purpose". They seem to be such personable creatures that tearing that away from them would create a rather unique sense of isolation in a great uncaring universe. The Pushmi-Pullyu is a beast that is never alone by itself, but is itself alone among anyone else.

That's a pretty good way to define Pushmi-Pullyu on the whole, I think. As long as they live, they have each other and that is enough.

Perhaps it's the use of their talents in the service of others, then, that is their primary "purpose." The search for their creator, or for someone or something to act as a substitute for their creator, becomes almost an after-thought or a subconscious desire. They know that whoever or whatever made them is out there, somewhere, and that they will find them someday, but until that day comes they will continue wandering and plying their skills.

I'd imagine that it would be interesting to have a wizard/sorcerer/warlock send a party after one so that they could perform a rather elaborate ritual. The players would only receive the most basic description of the creature:

-body of a beast
-two heads
-quick

The party would then go hunting the "two-headed beast" only the have it elude them. During the hunt the party will encounter various traps and situations and blame it on the creature they're hunting. Not once will the party get a clear glimpse of the creature. Maybe they even run into several other groups hunting the creature and will either be put into competition with them or need to defeat in combat. They'll also discover that the traps they encountered were set by these other hunters.

Eventually the party would encounter the "beast", find out it's a Pushmi-Pullyu, and discover that it's quite friendly to boot. It will then be left up to them to either bring the Pushmi-Pullyu back to their employer, return to the employer empty handed, or kill their employer for being an evil prick.

It's a basic plot, but it'd be a start at least.

I was almost thinking of introducing a Pushmi-Pullyu as a guard in a kind of "through the looking glass" kind of labyrinth to put my players through. I would also limit the players to only being allowed to ask 3-4 questions before being attacked by the pushmi-pullyu guard.

Once again, you've done us a great treat by sharing your writing. Your back and forth dialogue between Torae and Tori, Writ and Wrote, and the two pairs together is as well thought out and entertaining as ever, and you really sold the idea of Pushmi-Pullyu meeting for the first time and realizing that there are more of their kind out there. The poignancy of her story, and how much these strange Pushmi mean to her after so many centuries was unexpected and very interesting, and it was fun to see so ancient an elf lose her mind with glee over finally getting to meet these fairytale creatures. Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but I can imagine her joining Ivor and Torae-Tori as party wizard despite her age, so as to be able to meet more Pushmi and get to the bottom of the tale.

A little hung on wither or not Hallu-Halla appeared during a winter or summer.
The summer let’s them be in their element with much to hunt let her survive, but wolves on the winter hunt is quite iconic and fitting for her pragmatic personality.

I'd almost say go with winter. Tying it in with the theme of a lost sheep provides that sense that not only was the sheep at risk but it's keeper as well, re-enforcing the idea of an omen on their arrival.

That feeling of a lost sheep was what I was going for with Bende-Bunde. They chose a herd, stuck fast to it, and has cared for them.
Hallu-Halla is like a lone wolf who has actually learned to survive as that. She could still choose a pack, but hasn’t because they’re so used to being alone.

I think the two pairs you chose weren't the easiest to bring together, but you used their differences to tell an interesting story of kin who share two very different points of view. I very much enjoyed seeing the conflict between Bende-Bunde's devotion to the idea of their creator's benevolence and Hallu-Halla's rejection of their creator's supposed disregard. It came out well and was a good addition to the world we've been building.

Thanks! I chose them because of how simultaneously different and similar the lives of a Huntress and Shepherd could be. One is active, one is passive, but both are wholly devoted to the task they have taken. One thinks they see reasons their creator cares for them, and the other thinks they see reasons they do not, but both believe the creator is out there. It is what comforts them the most that causes them to believe what they believe.
Bende-Bunde likes to think that there is somebody watching out for them as they watch over their flock, while Hallu-Halla like to think every success they’ve had is due to the effort they put in. Neither are wrong, neither are right, they just are.
I also wanted to show that one wasn’t automatically stronger or weaker than the other due to their upbringing. It was their conviction in their chosen tasks that made them as they were.

Very good points. These threads have definitely shown me some of the most thoughtful work I've seen on /tg/ in some time.

With 35 posts left before the thread begins to fall off the board, it might be wise to look toward the future. We'll be wanting to archive it on Sup/tg/ along with the others, certainly, and decide how to proceed from there. After three successful threads, I think it might be a good idea to give our Pushmi-Pullyu a rest for a week or at least until the weekend comes around again, in part to let us recharge our creative batteries and also to try and appear less obnoxious to other fa/tg/uys who might want to rain on the parade.

As much as I look forward to new content, I'd hate for us to drain or poison the well.

We should let this sit for at least five days to a week. Work on capping those greentexts, save the pastebin links, all that jazz. It would be great if we could get some more drawfaggotry in here, but that might be a tall order. I'm certainly going to be taking a look at those Pathfinder rules and maybe re-working them a touch.

They are definitely more magical than any non-Fae I can think of, and Fae are like humans++. Dragons can just be giant winged lizards, and Unicorns are horned horses. The closest equivalent to their unusual figure would be with Chimeras or Manticores, and despite albeing a mishmash of creatures, even then those are formed in a relatively sensible biological shape.

The fact that Pushmi-Pullyus exist in opposition to how bodies are understood to function makes them uniquely special.
So basically the question of “How do they poop?” just brings to the forefold how unusual and noteworthy they are.

Though I think it was a mistake that the previous threads were tagged with “Monstergirls”, though that’s mainly because everything else I’ve seen with that tag tends to be fetish bait without attempt (or even desire!) to be anything else.

To take an example already brought up, the Chakats didn’t look bad design wise, and a feline variety of centaur would have been a good change of pace. But they were made to be nothing but “so friendly, so flawless, such fur” Sue trash that you could find anywhere.
They had something that could be cool, but was just made generic dumb.
