You know, I've been wondering about making my own east-Asian fantasy setting, largely based off of Avatar. Haven't been able to get much anywhere, but let me know what you think.

What I have so far is adding a Polynesian styled culture whose motif is 'spiritbending' (they can't so much bend as they are much more focused on the general spirit side of things, so they are less of a fifth tribe, and more of an extra addition), animal-folk that can shapeshift into different animals, though only one per person, a minority in all the major kingdoms, and making the water-tribe less arctic, and more Siberian/Mongolian, so there's more going on with them.

Any other thoughts? Ever had any minor issues with the universe you wanted addressed, or east-Asian mythology visited?

To be fair the buffs he got in book 3 were insane. His space sword lets him ignore armor saves and he can ranged chi block with his boomerang now, which completely removes the otherwise broken Combustion Man hero from the meta. Don't forget that he has initiative on par with Piandao now too, so in most cases he'll strike first in melee. The main problem is just getting him there, which is hard to do without bender support. He's definitely better in a team but he can more than hold his own in a fight now and outside of a few master benders like the Avatars, Ozai and Azula, he's a great character killer if he can get in to actually fight.

Considering Zuko's specialty is Ranged suppression, he can open holes for Sokka to enter like its nothing.

So yeah, Zuko and Sokka work great together, if you keep Sokka focused on always pushing into holes Zuko opens up.

Look at it this way, anon. If they've got a Water Tribe list, be it 1st Edition, Northern Siege, Foggy Swamp, Comet, even 2nd Expansion Korra- you probably win. If they're Lotus-ing or Gaanging, you can make their shit not work so good, call it an even fight if you can keep their Zuko off of you (you gotta keep him surpressed, and yeah putting anti-Zuko resources into your build seems inefficient because they just don't apply to anything else, but it's worth it- you're that advantaged). Fire... ok, you've got a fight. A bad one. But the outcome isn't certain- it's a disadvantaged grind, not a curbstomp. Their jaws don't have much of a bite against you.

Ironically, what you have to watch out for is pretty much any kind of Earth Kingdom. You're basically doing what they expect you to do- only you're much, much worse at it than they were expecting.

Blue spirit Zuko is a lot weaker if you actually follow the rules, which state that he doesn't firebend.
The point is to have a hero unit with less restrictions in return for less power. The mask disguises his true identity, meaning he can be on any side of a conflict, not just fire nation. But it also means he can't use any of Zuko's firebending moves.
Combine him with Kyoshi Warriors for some good ambush manoeuvres, but don't pit him against Azula. Rules as written lighting redirection is illegal for him.

We all know they're fodder, Brainwashing Long Feng is where it's actually at. Get the Lake Laogai expansion and enjoy turning your opponent's units against them. Unlike Hama, you can't break this control with just high enough waterbending.

Well, for awhile there, Aang was the ONLY air unit, but yeah, they are really good at crowd control, but are okay against heavier, direct attack units like earth benders and terrible against hero units in general.

And Aang as the avatar isn't as strong as you would think, he is much better off focusing on either air bending or going avatar state, at which point only a handfull of hero units can even touch him. For a good all around unit with decent leadership buffs, though, might as well include him.

Its too bad that the Air nation armies were destroyed in 3rd edition. They were busted dude. Monk Geyatso's fruit pie artillery could disrupt formations and damage defense due to the "blinded by gooey center" status effect.

Foggy Swamp is all about zoning. I wrote an article about it in WL once. Also remember the previous edition units are still legal, some people tend to forget that. Get Huu in the center, his movement is shit but using your boaties for rivertide is worth it, then circle the enemy with your smaller units. The stacks you get are insane with the increased stagger chances for each waterbending attack. So when building what I look at is movement and attack range more than anything, because you can forget having tanks (except for Huu, protecting the rest with entangle) or dealing damage.

Airbenders are her other hard counter but in the 100 Year War edition the only one is Aang and he's the avatar so he's just a hard counter to everything anyway. There are ways around Toph besides that but they're gimmicky, like Azula getting a good roll off on lightning can oneshot her from across the map if she's not running Zuko to redirect, and Ty Lee can chi block her if she can get in to do it. Sokka can do a lot of damage if he can get in but it's almost impossible without support from another bender, and at that point you might as well just run a real counter to Toph.

Relatively new player but I run a Fire Nation Navy list with Zhao as my leader, Captain in low point games Admiral in higher point games, and I'm getting wrecked by my friend who plays Earth Kingdom. I know the Fire Nation Navy sub-faction is not great against Earth Kingdom in general but I really like their roster and deployment rules. Fire Nation usually has some on field artillery to help against Turtle Kingdom but I have to use the Off Shore Bombardment rules. They're a mixed bag against Earth kingdom (travel time but bigger blast radius and damage) but it's so expensive and the Navy has hardly any good armor piercing choices for infantry, and what limited cav they get.

The main thing with Mai is that she was released alongside the completely broken Azula and the pure cheese that is Ty Lee. Add on the fact that the entirety of Book 2 and most of Book 3's meta was Azula+Ty Lee rocket tag and it's not hard to understand why a hero that is fairly powerful and balanced like Mai would get completely ignored. That being said, if you're not running Azula Mai is usually a better option than Ty Lee depending on your playstyle, and almost always a better option if you're up against a ranged heavy opponent.

Equalists are fucking great despite only having a limited release with no follow-up. Chi blockers are a hard counter to most bending heavy armies and have access to bikes and the bolas for mobility and range options. Lieutenant can toe to toe most bending heroes and Amon is an absolute fucking beast who fucks avatars into the dirt.
Protest rabble are garbage, but they're some of the cheapest chaff in the game.

Having a grand total of 3 units and 2 heroes in total is a fucking joke and they should hurry up and release Hundun, but it's all worth it just to see some fucking neckbeard weep tears of piss about "fucking Korra factions" every time I use Amon to throw his Katara to her death or remove Aang's bending and have him mobbed to death by protestors.

Man, the Earth Kingdom army rocks. They're a bolder army that rewards dirty tactics, so long if you find the player with the right stones to run them. Most people chalk it up to lucky rolls but their defense is a concrete line that's hard to erode, getting through them is like marching through mud. Getting my army painted was a real milestone, too. After a few victories in my local tournament my upcoming opponents were petrified.

Chi blockers actually don't have the faction keyword for some reason, so you can run them wherever you can special rule them in. You won't be able to run them as troops though, so you're not going to be looking at more than one squad except at absolutely gigantic point values.

You can still attach them to nonbending elites on certain lists. I've been toying with the idea of running Ty-Lee, Chi-blockers and a Chi-blocker-Kyoshi Warriors on an Open list, but I don't think it would be fun to play against, even if I didn't use any benders.

I guess you mostly play against bitch boys who retreat at the first sign of threat. WB and EB armies have much greater defensive capabilities/stats and as soon as they close the gap and you loose your range advantage then your troops are done for, which is a bad idea if you rely on your leader to win the battle for you.

Tanks are great assets but are too slow and can easily be walked around if not deployed right. The only way to play FB right is to use divide and destroy tactics, which Zhao and Azula are good at since they can either boost their own troops or take covert actions to disable enemy troops and leaders. With Ozai you can't do that since it will be to easy for the opponent to react in a timely matter. Also the "let my leader carry me to victory" relies to heavily on not getting cock blocked by the enemy leader.

I was thinking about mechanics, and the thing is, combat is so fucking dynamic in Avatar that it really should be represented in the gameplay. And I wouldnt want to have to throw 3 buckets of dices every time I activate Aang. So I thought about a straight up 3d6 roll against a fixed value (like in Warmachine but with a 3rd dice always), where each individual dice result (or doubles or triples) can then be used to chain in actions. Characters and units have Techniques which are basically just a list of Actions you can choose from when chaining these actions. So Activate Aang to attack some rando, roll 3d6 against a Defense of 12, roll 6, 4 and 3, so it's a success on the hit. 3 is an additional hit, 4 is a push back effect of 2 inches, and 6 allows you to move Ang 4 inches, Appa 4 inches, and if they are within 2 inches of each other at the end of both moves, Ang can ride Appa (and gains fly). Something like that.

They all have special buffs and debuffs so you can use them for countering certain units.
Depending on your armybook you can upgrade the regular units for certain roles, but its all about aggression with the Fire Nation, they don't roll defensive builds very well.

Because Moonslayer has some terrifying drawbacks that aren't worth it unless you're going up against a heavy waterbending list, the most obvious being all units with the Spirit keyword get massive bonuses against you. Which includes Avatars. Moonslayer is viable in some lists and builds but I think if you're making a general list just run Admiral Zhao.

Boom and Zoom Ozai isn't supposed to take on the enemy by himself, he's supposed to be used in conjunction with your overall strategy. Hit and run, kiting, fucking up the backfield, and quickly responding to enemy actions is what he's geared towards. The only time you should just be throwing him at enemy units isn't hero hunting, it's to take out chaff. He's pretty much the supreme anti-tarpit unit.

The Colossus is a trap option, Age of Korra has a bunch of them. It eats a massive amount of your points and its AoE blast might be a one-hit kill but it's also not very practical against armies of man-sized targets, which are still the preferred medium. It's more of an anti-city than anti-army weapon and fucking nobody uses the siege rules anymore.

The basic Earth Empire Mech, however, is straight up broken and you can field DOZENS of those bastards for the same cost as the giant one. They've got better armor, mobility, and offense than the Equalist Mech; kit them out with flamethrowers and you've got a platoon of hyper-defensive firebenders in an earthbender army, and they get other weapons on top of that!

The model prices ARE highway robbery, though, I'll give ya that.

After reading your post, I had the idea that instead of using only dice, maybe each unit with bending powers could have a deck of different attack/defense/utility cards representing the techniques that character possesses. Units would still have stats, but when two benders get locked in combat they can have a mini-duel where each player “casts” bending cards at each other to simulate the dynamics of a fight. Different bending units would have different card stack amounts, their personal library of bending techniques, and part of prepping an army would involve what order you stack a units bending technique cards in, maybe with additional rules for shuffling. Maybe have the bending cards played from a hand instead, I dunno. Could make different card game “styles” for each bending type too. Firebenders can play cards from a hand limit while waterbenders can only draw one at a time from their library. Whatever thematically makes sense as well as makes for a good game.

I was thinking that bending would be a chart of effects that you can choose from/unlock the more points of chi you spend to perform a move: earth creates/modifies terrain, fire does direct damage, water inflicts status effects, air physically moves enemies. And depending on which direction you move on the chart determines whether you add secondary effects/amplify your current one.

Also, you could have units buy "mastered" skills that follow a specific power build that maxes out their chi use for the turn, but doesn't tire them out (like healers or combustion man)

You could do a kind of action system where each unit has a set number of actions they can use a turn, and certain abilities cost more actions than others. Maybe fluff it as chi or whatever. So like, an earth kingdom guard unit has 3 actions, moving is one, throwing a salvo of boulders at their enemies is another, and then making a small rock barricade to provide cover for the return fire is their third action. Then you get elite and character units with more chi and more expensive abilities, like say Azula using flame jets to move further for two actions and then throwing out lightning for three more, using up her 5 chi but moving her across the map and sniping another character for big damage.

How do I build a proper swamp army? Avoiding conflicts with spirit illusions and having vine benders stall forever until I develop the spirit nuke that came with the Korra swamp pack, all while the central tree hero unit gives everyone decent mobility across the entire board the longer the game goes on, all seems kinda fun.
