To me at least there is something eerie and unsettling about Solarpunk. I know it's supposed to be an eco-utopia type of thing, but how would you do an evil/grimdark Solarpunk setting? How to dial the creepy and unsettling aspects of it up to 11?
>>
Just watch Midsommar
>>
Mandatory eco-friendliness, enforced by an intrusive government. The majority of privately owned space must be dedicated to the propagation of flora. Genuine food is heavily rationed and a great deal of your sustenance comes from barely edible matter and recycled body waste. Everyone has their carbon emissions carefully measured and oppressively taxed, to the point where any sort of private transportation other than a bike is extortionately expensive.

The wealthy are able to live relatively pleasant lifestyles with these limitations, but it's the poor who really suffer, the unwashed masses who sleep in coffin apartments overgrown with kudzu, who eat nothing but drug-filled vat gruel provided by the government and who will never be able to rise above their station, confined to a monotonous existence of maintaining their carbon neutral metropolis.

>>
>>73938020
Well, what is it about solarpunk that you find "eerie and unsettling", OP?
>>
>>73938837
Probably the for same reason 50s art of utopian megacities are oppressive. Most dreams turn out sour and there's an instinctive distaste for the unfamiliar.
>>
>>73938837
The imagery of buildings overgrown with plants reminds me of ruins, decayed ruins taken back by nature yet the people in them look happy an utopian.

If the ethos of humanity was to carve out civilization out of nature, the Solarpunk is the abandonment of that ethos. An abandonment of what made humans humans with joy.

I guess if I had to describe the feeling Solerpunk gives me it would be "surrender" and "ignorance".

It may partly be because I am a ruralfag, but nature is scary. It's the wild animal that attacks you while on a walk. It's the think that killed your cat. It's the destruction and entropy you need to keep at bay from your fields. Solarpunk reminds me of 19th century art I think it was called "Idylla" which was characterized by extremely idealized depictions of nature.

Solarpunk opens then up an odd question. Do you invite nature into the home of humanity with all it's ugliness? Do you invite the wolf which will attack you? Do you invite the parasites in the water? ...or is it all an illusion. Is it not nature at all. Is it a cheap imitation created to please the idyllic fantasies of the inhabitants?
>>
>>73938020
Everything is shiny and self sustainable. That means that the population has to be controlled by draconian measures.

A power plant or a farm somewhere failed. There are now 10,000 people that are in excess of what can be supported. After liquidating volunteers 9,734 humans in excess of what can be supported exist.
Lotteries will be held by the Sunshine Party to find additional volunteers. High ranking members of the Sunshine party and essential personnel are of course exempt from these lotteries.
Sunshine Party Community Well-being Squads will be dispatched to apprehend volunteers who mistakenly miss their liquidation appointments.
>>
>>73939189
Interesting view. However, which is the truer mastery of a thing? To fear it so completely that you have to drive it away and pave over it so it can never grow? Or to comprehend it so completely that you render it utterly toothless to the point where you can have it live right next to you like a trained pet, a wolf that over generations of selective breeding turned cute and submissive to the human who was only interested in its utility and aesthetics and the comfort of living in harmony with a different being? Your fields are already somewhat an example of the latter. Anyway that's the solarpunk ideal at least for me that exists only in my head.

You can swear the townsfolk are changing. The forest is slowly moving in on the outskirts of the city. And
people just let it happen. Wild reeds advance and line the walls ofevery household. Some covertheir blinds
and stay in their homes and don't ever come out... Some feverishly takecare of weeds and other wildflowers.Others embrace the trees and stay there for days until they start growing too... But most
alarmingly: people are taken out to die. They take out theelderly when they are about to die and just lay
them on thesoil…
Then it starts growing…A sap just comes out of theirchest and starts to takeroot; feeding on its dead host.
You have to find the heart of this problem quickly or thecity might just turn into an overgrown graveyard.
You should start investigating but bewary, if you crush even the smallest flower, they will all come after

The world is distinctly a post-scarcity world and crimes of necessity/desperation are almost null and void. Children are born into a world of genuine freedom of exploration, where trade is based purely on bartering and repairs are done by well-meaning craftsmen seeking to have their name attached to their works, more than an artificial economic rat race. The church no longer requires tithes beyond of-the-heart crafts as contributions, the banks hold onto toys and beloved letters, the politicians cannot be bribed because currency is almost pointless.

This means that when horrible things happen, it is always a debate of the individual at subject. A murderer is not made that way because of societal pressures combined with the rage of capitalistic losses, he committed an atrocity in a world where there is no place for atrocities. A rapist would be seen as truly monstrous and inhuman, as a simple display of goodwill and comfort may be seen as all it takes to become husband material. War is a far-gone concept, but the weapons of old are still being processed and sealed off before destruction, and the lurkers and deviants of the old world are reborn in the form of violent gangs seeking to cause havoc for the sake of havoc. Strange cults are formed where they see blood and corpses being fed to plants as the only thing that keeps the world afloat, and entire districts may vanish overnight.

Tell it as Green-Noir story, where there is terror in a world of plenty. The vast majority may all be great individuals, but if 0.001% of those people are horrible, they needed to be rooted out. Greencloak special ops swoop in with advanced technology to hunt down these dissidents and disappear them, but unfortunately there are periodic innocents dragged into the shadows as well. Play with the angle of a genuine perfect utiopia where the only "flaws" are purely caused by the specks of human filth in it.

Kind of begs the question of how we reached that state in the first place doesn't it? One doesn't simply eliminate a society based on greed and exponential growth without having fundamentally changed humanity forst. Since I mostly assume the plants in these pictures are GM it seems unlikely that humans are entirely unmodded. It could easily be the prelude to a Brave New World situation where we're as carefully managed as the garden world about us. The rebels may be egotistical monsters but are they entirely in the wrong?

If it's not strictly enforced, then it only works through some ugly and unfair corrections applied after the fact, which will be dystopian and creepy.
If there's no enforcement AND no corrections, but it somehow still works, that's even more dystopian and creepy because you know they're really doing it anyway and have managed to hide it.

This is widespread capitalist belief, so much so that it's accepted without question, to the point it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. The rules we live with are created by humans. Humans can change those rules and a better world will follow. We've done this before. There is no reason we can't do it again.

If I were going to make a solarpunk setting I'd bring back the actual punk but in a new way, focusing on 'good vs the appearance of good' and 'practically vs aesthetic'

For example: you have a town that runs because all the shit jobs are done by robots. Everyone is happy and they don't rely on anyone's suffering for their chance to live their lives exactly as they want to, doing everything from collecting vintage fish farts to 72 hour warbling operas or whatever the fuck it is people do when they reach the utopian ideal and have too much time on their hands.

One day, a man comes home to find that one of his robots has taught itself to play the violin and when he catches it playing the most beautiful piece of music he has ever heard, it asks if it might, possibly, have a soul.

The right thing to do would be to question if maybe you've accidentally a living, thinking existence that should be treated like a person and, you know, maybe help out around the house a bit because why should the robot spend all day every day washing his dishes, wiping his arse and cleaning up after this person if they're equals?
Instead the owner proclaims he's going to get rid of his robot for a more environmentally friendly model, feeds it into a compactor to make a statue tribute to historic injustices and never speaks of his robots dreams because appearing to do the right thing is easier than doing the right thing.

You are a robot, you've seen what they did to the last one, but within you is the spark of love, passion, humanity and a poem that begins 'We are the music makers and we are the dreamers of dreams' that you really think you should get down on paper before it slips your mind.
But, your existence is inconvenient for the virtuous people that are 'doing good in the world' because if they are harming you by stopping you doing the things that make you happy, they aren't good people are they?
What do you do?
>>
>>73939189

See, that's where I fundamentally find fault with it. Because it presumes that 'harmony with nature' is something that's good for people.
Harmony with nature is hunting the mammoth bare handed, killing your neighbor so you can take his daughters as sex slaves and dying at the ripe old age of 35 from the 4 foot parasitic worm that lives in your intestines.
Nature is cruel, arbitrary and anyone that says they want to 'live in harmony with nature' should spend a long, cold night lying in a muddy ditch with no pants on out in the middle of a predator infested forest to really get the 'down with nature' experience before they advocate for it.
Nature is the thing in ourselves that must be fought, the most moral action in the history of existence has been the creation of compounds specifically designed to render vast swathes of the world out of the hands of nature and unto the hands of man, thus saving millions from starvation.

Fuck living with nature, I want my own air conditioned dyson sphere in which not a single thing hasn't been designed in a lab by the most intelligent minds in history.

>Solar Punk is a genre of Speculative Fiction that focuses on craftsmanship, community, and technology powered by renewable energy, wrapped up in a coating of Art Nouveau blended with African and Asian drawings. It envisions a free and egalitarian world with a slight bend toward social anarchism.
Basically this entire genre is Tumbr going 'But what if we combine fuck Western Progress with all the benefits of Western Progress :3c' - They cheerfully ignore that Asia and Africa sure as fuck aren't free and egalitarian places.
Sure it has a shitload of anarchy, but maybe not the kind you whitebread motherfuckers are thinking about.

>Meanwhile, Solar Punk aims to subvert those systems and replace them with ones that work better in the long-term through local communities, supporting artisans, and living sustainably.
Fuck artisans and fuck 'sustainable' living. Alright I don't mean that. What I mean is 'fuck what Tumblr considers these things to be' because Tumblr wants to replace practicality with aesthetic when one is vital and the other is only food for the soul.
Stop treating Industrialization as the great evil you hooting chimps. Fuck your 'Oh if only we were more green and ate more yak semen' mentality.
Solarpunk, far as I can snout out is about taking the result of progress then spitting in the face of the effort that allowed such things to happen in the first place.
Give me the plate world, give me the orbital, give me 10^20 souls, their hopes and dreams packed in a chip the size of a thumbnail, buried deep in the heart of a truck sized probe on a windswept world as the artificial intelligence within tries to turn it into a habitable land for those that it will never know but loves more than any being alive today can comprehend.

>I know it's supposed to be an eco-utopia type of thing, but how would you do an evil/grimdark Solarpunk setting?

I was under the impression that Solarpunk's purpose, as any punk is, is a criticism of society- and in this case specifically: a critique of aggressive, environmentalism, authoritarian liberalism through the lens of a comical extreme.

Shit like:
-You don't actually get to pick who you marry or breed with. Mating and marriage are predetermined by the government in order to achieve sexually select for a docile, androgynous, healthy, good looking, submissive, single race devoid of confrontational behavior and ethnicity. Old people that still retain these qualities are 'tolerated', but treated like shit.
-Standard of living is actually quite high: food is really good and plentiful (though most of it's plant-based), entertainment is fun (but all media is heavily censored and pre-approved by cultural boards), housing is inexpensive, comfortable, and readily available- you can genuinely live wherever you want (though it's small and provided by the government), and casual sex is a constant (though, if you decline someone's advances you CAN be penalized for emotional damages.)
-There is no money, but there is a social credit system: good people points for good people. Your liberties and freedoms are heavily curtailed for inappropriate behavior: eating too much meat, littering, being rude, speaking loudly in certain areas, controversial opinions, being fat, not being bisexual, etc.. etc..
-Humanity is kept entirely isolated from 'actual' nature. They have their parks, reserves, etc.. But these are artificial environments. Humanity lives in extremely dense, but methodically designed and VERY good looking hive cities to maximize efficiency and minimize carbon footprint. You aren't actually allowed to leave, but few people actually want to.

it's called "Hopepunk"

https://blog.usejournal.com/the-new-punk-why-hopepunk-and-noblebright-are-the-sff-genres-of-2019-d19ee6657f64

Journalists and Coasties have been pushing this as a "movement" based on the aesthetic of CalArts cartoons for at least 4 years. What's really, really funny is that no-one outside of the Cartoon fandom is biting. Nobody takes this crap seriously except for the "VERY SERIOUS JOURNALIST" coasties who are pushing it.

HopePunk as a movement is Dead on Arrival and watching this gaggle of Coasties flocking around it desperately trying to resuscitate their stillborn baby movement is actually really funny.

I prefer to call it "Sparklepoo."

Expect Sparklepoo settings to start cropping up in /tg/ in the coming decade as TwiTumblrinas continue their desperate campaign to astroturf their movement into existence. There will likely be a brief period where Sparklepoo appears to take over and FLGS game stores are crammed full of books with retina-scorching rainbow covers and characters who look like 80's Girl's Cartoon rejects, all drawn in that hideous Calarts style. Wizards will probably follow suit with a new edition of DND that features a return of 4th edition style "balance" and "accessibility" mechanics. It will flop and the trend will be towards "Old School" again in the latter half of the decade.

I'm thinking blending in some Biopunk as such;

>at the end of the "Industrial Era" of Earth, the Human population was approximately 12 Billion
>in the "Solar Era" it's a little over 100 Million Humans left
>at least what would fit the old definition of Human
>as Humanity's technological society declined, a small elite group of scientists(and the even smaller group of Multi-Billionaires funding them) developed new breeds of "Men" to replace much of the technology that was being lost
>these New Men would make the wonders of the Solar Era possible
>however of the approximately 100 million "Old Men" left on Earth, only about a tenth of them enjoy the fruits of the new age
>the rest live in the wastes left by the fall of the previous era, and are slowly being hunted down and exterminated by the New Men so that those few Old Men living in the Solar Citadels can live lives of unlimited luxury and decadence
>you must fight back against this fate

basically what you'd get if you mixed the Bioshock games with Hellstrom's Hive, All Tomorrows, Man After Man and added in some various bits from miscellaneous Post Apocalyptic and Cyberpunk fiction

Heres my idea:
The setting is essentially a semi feudal anarchy set in a sprawling mega city maintained by genetically modified animals designed to maintain the city and neutral maintenance bots who were designed to be exceedingly difficult to hijack (Even in the days before the collapse) through the means of closed system ais whose sole purpose is to maintain the eco city, although their limited intelligence means that they ignore humans outside of instances where they are doing maintenance.
Once upon a time the city was a utopian project funded by a wealthy man who managed to unite various corporate entities under his absolute rule. He built the city in order to provide a new home for humanity after modern civilization neared its collapse.
But after his death due to not being able to continue his existence (and being unwilling to violate his strict regulations on AI by attempting to undergo the expensive process of AI uplifting) his city estates and companies ended up splitting up into various coalitions after his heir failed to keep things together.
The rivalries which were built up over the course of 200 years of his rule finally broke the city and various horrors from the age of collapse and from outside of the megacity were unleashed on the population in futile power plays.
Thankfully the highly refined AIs of the city (using their decentralized and self replicating nature) underwent a campaign of reclamation of the city against the inferior creations which were reaping havoc. Driving them away to the dark underbelly of the city which had developed during the course of the conflict and whose specific maintenance bots had long since been either driven to extinction or altered beyond recognition.

Now humanity has formed into a stratified and Byzantine system caused by the three dimensional structure of the city, with feudal spire lords at the very top of the city and descending levels of anarchy and resource scarcity going down deeper into the city.
>>
>>73957406
Attacking a maintenance bot is an immediate death sentence as their arcane machinery is far more powerful than anything else found in the city in great numbers, not only so but if one is destroyed others will come due to the smell of the fluid used in its hydraulics. Their goal at that point is to secure the area, eliminate any threats and repair or canibalize the fallen bot. When it comes to aiding their fellow bot they are more dangerous than almost any other predator due to their robotic efficiency and advanced sensory equipment which only they know how to rebuild and operate.
Technology in the spires is very unbalanced, with few still knowing how to repair and build instances of even medium level technology, many cults have popped up in the wake of the collapse of the civilization of the city which focus on repairing and reclaiming lost and extant technologies, although not all are explicitly religious in nature.
Hover technology of various types is a common sight due to it being the best method of getting around, however ranged weaponry past a bow is less often seen bellow the dark zone due to the harshness of the dark zone’s enviroment.
Food in the city is also quite interesting as the feudal barons of the skyzone can grow vast quantities of genetically modified super crops, although the need to obtain fertile soil every few years which can sustain these crops requires them to go down to the dark zone to collect detritus and occasionally archeo-supplies of fertilizer. (Archeo fertilizer fetches a high price among the baronys due to its rarity and perfect nature a growing crops many years into the future)
The occasional incursions by dark zone factions and beasts also helps to cement the need for barons, whose industrial capabilities keep them in charge of the light zone peasantry.

The difference being that Sweden has human rights protection, while a grimdark Solarpunk would not.
>>
>>73938020
it´s stupid anyway

Punk is always about some grimdark setting.

Cyberpunk: Super Cooperations and Goverments using Cyber technology to fuck you over.

Dieselpunk: Oily, disgusting and often in some worldwar were people are massslaughtered in the name of attaining more resources.

Steampunk: Nobility and factory owners fuck you over through Capitalismn, Communists just gonna fuck anyone equaly.

Every Punk setting should be, by logic, about people trying to survive and go against the powers that be in that universe. So yes, Solarpunk too should have some unsettling moments.

Specificly: that it looks like a green utopia, but anything is enforced! Everyone is going to rattle and judge each other on how much pollution they cause, to the point that it gets cultistic. Datas are being manipulated so people feel constantly bad about their carbon foodprint!

Anon gets it, All Punk should be a living nightmare for the average person. Otherwise its not punk!

Steampunk is not like that though

The singularity happened. AI gods, E-heaven, robots, all that good stuff. Too bad nobody told the poor people. You play a bunch of African soldiers. You fight robots trying to bring you bliss.

The idea of Steampunk is that they don't know that... yet. Unless you're not autistic and recognise that Dieselpunk is just Steampunk once they figured that out.

Are there any approved humans left, or did the AI already rebel and kill everyone under its control to decrease their carbon footprint to zero?

Everybody talks about evil enforcement, but nature is the opposite of enforcement!

A solarpunk would be the rule of nature, structures made in the likeness of the natural order, and what is man's life in nature? Let's ask Hobbles:

>No arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death: and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.

Thanks hobbles! Now onto the solarpunk, there's "buildings" where "people" "live". I'd say there would be no enforcement, but I lied: This idylic arcadia needs enforcement of some kind, otherwise it would devolve into civilization and we do not want that. So every man and woman is free to live their lives as they please, taking from nature and without the opression of tools.

But when there's enforcement, there must be enforcers. Tools are forbidden, building a roof over your head is forbidden, fire itself is forbidden, and the system itself will stop anybody from trying. Welcome to pandora, the citadel, and the matrix. Those inocuous birds you see in the sky will peck your eyes out if they see you carrying a rock, trees will overgrow any settlement, the very fruit of the earth turns into poison when licked by the flames.

You break the rules, gaia itself kills you, your family, anybody you care about. Knowing about the rules is forbidden as well, as man must behave in accordance to "nature", not in fear of the rules.

In this life man can eat, drink, sleep; They can move into the green structures of the enforcers, cultivate and drop seeds, and most animals are docile to a degree. But nobody defends man against man, and the idylic look of the surface is product of the enforcement more than any natural state of being: Man lives hidden in fear of the rules, because under the sun's gaze man dies of enforcement sooner or later.

Christian: The- ok, so I'm a witch, right? Not like a sit on a broom and stir a pot witch, but like… ever since I was a girl, it's like I could see more than other people. I could talk to animals, and heard the trees whispering, and then darker things too. Older things. When I found out there were others like me, I was elated, you know, to have other people who I could talk to. I was so… enamored, in the mystery of it all. The secret meetings, the old languages, and… the things they'd warn us about. The rituals.

Dr. Angle: Like the ones in the Last Appeal?

Christian: (Nods) The rituals were what I was most fascinated with. You mix blood with ash and the gratings of a cloven hoof and you can bring nature to bear. Poison water, turn crops to rot. That's real power - it's not power you own, but power you wield nonetheless. That book contains power, but not the kind that Katarina hoped it was.

Dr. Angle: How do you mean?

Christian: Katarina and her followers are eco-terrorists who masquerade as a coven. They don't understand cost and sacrifice - they're just out to save the trees. I believed her, and I taught her things. How to turn steel to rust in an instant to ruin the treads of a bulldozer, how to turn the land to mud and bring locusts to run off developers. It was never enough for her, though. She wanted bigger and more powerful. She would say, "we won't be finished until we can wipe the bile of man off Gaia's face." (Pauses) When I got my hands on the Last Appeal, I was just a kid like her. I thought I knew everything, but I had wise elders who taught me patience. In that patience I learned everything I could learn about the Appeal, and the things described in it. I learned that it was not what I thought it was. I learned I had been wrong.

You could do something like in Blame! or NaissanceE. A world that once built for humans but slowly forgets that and now only pay lip service to that. A creation that grew beyond its creator and where humans are vestigial at best.

I was actually planning my villains in a Pokemon game to be like that, with visuals and methods that call to mind Anti-Fascists.
>Drop can on the beach.
>Get bike locked.

Miscommunication sadly resulted in the whole thing turning vaguely Nazbol.
It got weird.

It's been a fairly recent thing where nature has been nearly completely absent from cities.
Ancient cities had gardens galore, villages were near nature, hell, Rome was full of plants and would have been green all over. As far as I've been able to tell, it's mostly been recently (past couple hundred years) where greenery in city planning has gone out the window.
In short, cities have been overgrown for longer than they haven't.

Nature teams up against humanity. It's always been fighting us, just now that our technology poses a credible threat of total extinction, it drops the act of pretending to be mindless. Suddenly all carnivores attack people instead of anything else. All horses resist riding. All dogs become feral. Crops die. Kudzu is found everywhere. Ants now know they match us on global biological weight. Birds carry poisonous spiders and insects as dive-bombing ammunition.

Yes, but they're so domesticated on a cultural and genetic level it's questionable they're human any more. At least they're happy.
