/tg/ - Traditional Games

What if WotC made new mana colors straight-up-better than basic colors, but balanced it by making their basic lands cost resources? Like this Cyan color I've been developing, what if I bumped it up to some kind of "tier 3" "power-mana"? As a two-drop basic land; the earliest you could play a cyan one-drop would usually then be turn 3 without ramp, turn 2 with ramp.

Thoughts?
>>
>>74398585
Mana rocks already exist, dumbass. This is so retarded there's no way Wizards won't put it in.
>>
>>74398585
Stupidest fucking idea I have heard.
>>
>>74398585
The fact that this would necessitate playing a different color or colorless in addition to the new color makes it dilute the new colors even further. no
>>
>>74398669
How is it the same thing as mana rocks if it takes a land-play, dumbass?

>>74398710

>>
If anyone's for it; I'm all auspexes to change development that way towards "power-mana" concept, if not I'm just going to keep developing these colors as basic lands bullshit so when we eventually have to standardize with intergalactic MtG rules our Earth cards will just be crap, and we can update to how space has already been playing MtG for decades or millennia or WHEREVER we actually are in human history here.
>>
>>74398741
>I don't think you know what color dilution really means.
To be honest I didn't know it was a term that already meant something.
>>
>>74398853
Because the God-Emperor of Mankind has done that Youjo-Senki "talking-to-me-with-a-crowd" bullshit enough times I know he wants cities to produce some kind of "gold super-mana" we've been calling honey. Since "honey is gold" and Hive Cities make "honey".

Ho refers to Honey, N is Brown (T2 versatility color), Ci is Cinnibar (T3 red-blue-black).

Fucking call it ADVANCED MtG imho so these brainlets can play babby kiddy four-color smoothbrain shit and have their turn-2 victories for the prize money or whatever their mundane fantasies are, and I can just go play FUN WIZARD GAMES IN A BASEMENT SOMEWHERE WITH PRO PLAYERS ANYWAYS!

And remember they're still lands so they use your turn's land play, they're not ramp, just more "lands matter" and "mana matters" really.
>>
Hey OP, wouldn't Darksteel Ingot and City of Brass break this dumb system of "stronger colors"? They can tap for mana of any color, including Brown and Cinnabar.
>>
>>74402176

>>
>>74402246

Remember when everyone called artifact cards brown cards back in the early 90s? Not seeing where my 'schizophrenia" comes from because you're a veritable child in comparison to my grasp?

Except that one person fucking with my captcha, they are clearly a powerful mage.
>>
>>74402267
And? Use your head. Gatherer still trumps card text for rules disputes.

Most of the people who played these cards against me were cheating anyways and trying to pull logic like, "if gold is multicolored than I can tap ANY land for honey, right?" I think to illustrate to me exactly how I had to balance all of this to not fuck it up. So the initial question was valid, but idk what confuses you about my answer.
>>
>>74402302
Although they were also trying to play for ante to take my good decks, so I suspect they were in fact just Jews who didn't know how to play the game attempting to rob idiots, which I was not an easy mark as they had assumed.

This final category consists of designs where you take your theme and push it to an extreme, breaking some set rules for the game. I like to ask, what would this theme like to do and see if it's pushing somewhere we've never pushed before. This isn't a category that we've printed any cards with yet. because that's the universally accepted method for conveying loud volume while communicating in text, such as if one was shouting with excitement or anger.

Which combined with the ad hominems, insults, and swearing, would give evidence that said shouting is indeed angry?

It takes a land play, it fills another design space than mana rocks. I'm playing with "lands matter" to make "mana matter" as an advanced mechanic. It supports old design space they plan on coming back to soon, such as Chroma, more than base concepts like "ramp" which is what mana-rocks are, mana-dorks without p/t. It looks like a rock, but it takes your land play AND costs mana so I'm trying to make it worth it to play, but all the feedback I get is, "I don't like it." like a Monty Python actor playing a child. So it's a basic land that costs mana to play. And taps for a color of mana exclusive to these costly basic lands, which would be stronger in what it can cast than normal colors.

Not a bad concept per say. You'll have a problem with it clogging, it's a dead card without a mana source to caste it, lots of mulligans for anything with more colors than 1 normal 1 advanced.

And if I'm being right honest, I'd be very sparing with the number of new premium colors you add, just for game simplicity sake. To achieve what you're trying to do, honestly just 1 is well enough for the desired mechanical effect, but certainly no more than 5.

What I don't understand is why include all this rampant schizoposting along with your otherwise fairly simple if not thoroughly thought through game idea?

You may cast that card without paying its mana cost. Then put all cards exiled this way that weren't cast on the bottom of your library in a random order.)
It's non-land cards anyways so the CMC of the lands doesn't matter.

Oh! It may be confusing at first, but have each T2 mana symbol count towards 2 CMC, T3 counts towards 3, etc, so a 1-drop Cyan would have a CMC of 2, a (1)Cyan would be CMC 3, a (1)Cinnibar would be CMC 3, etc.

>>74405099
I don't think there are such things as parasitic mechanics, Energy will be re-used in the future and could still work with these new colors, and Arcane has been under-used as it was a keyword for Splice to operate, but really is just a card type that can be used for anything really, even creatures or lands, just hasn't been yet.

By this definition: https://markrosewater.tumblr.com/post/135071129868/it-seems-like-people-constantly-misunderstand-what

Things are apparently only parasitic when WotC neglects to develop them further or abandons them. If they simply don't abandon these and print at least one or two cards in these colors a year, they will not be "parasitic". Abandoned more like, how do they parasitize anything? Not apt to call them parasitic at all. They're just deprecated mechanics.

"parasitic mechanics" is a non-thing he's using to smoke-screen you on his real plans.
>>
>>74405333
>>74409401
Also MaRo apparently forgets how Splice and Arcane works if he calls it parasitic, he just has to decouple them in his head, especially if Splice is written as:
>Splice onto [quality] [cost] (As you cast a(n) [quality] spell, you may reveal this card from your hand and pay its splice cost. If you do, add this card’s effects to that spell.)
So you could print "Splice onto Elf" or "Splice onto Golbin" or any other Tirbal Instant and it would still work. It's just under-utilized.

Same with Arcane, *right now* it's just a target for Splice, but they could target it with other mechanics, they could print a series of "Artifact - Arcane" and have another mechanic similar to Splice also target the artifact version, or the land version, or the creature version.

Energy would just need more cards to not be considered "parasitic" as well, and I'd like to point out was first printed a scant four years ago in Kaladesh, it just hasn't "grown up" yet. Was "Morph" parasitic until the newer Tarkir morphers by this logic?

>>
>>74410158
I didn't give it a rarity, I whipped it up in ten seconds in MSE after waking up and reading the thread.

Most of the cards I post do not have the correct rarity and I skip it over because honestly it's secondary to illustrating the mechanics and school of thinking in this discussion.

And compared to other cards that create soldier tokens that would make it unplayable, as-is it's a pretty shitty card, so it's fine as a common (vanilla 1/1 for W or for 2W, why would you swap them?) but it was made to illustrate a point.
>>
>>74410229
I thought that might have been the situation, regarding rarity. For swapping them, I'm wondering about card advantage. It's cheap to splice, and barring playing limited a player is going to build a deck to maximize synergy.
>>
>>74409613
Splice is not under utilized because it’s not a mechanic that can be very utilized. It plays in degenerate design space, like buyback, so the only way to “balance” it is generally making it so expensive that it’s shit. There isn’t much of a happy medium. Look at the one (1) splice onto instant/sorcery card they made in modern horizons.
You’re slavering at the “wasted potential” of splice because making it specifically arcane was obviously super limiting and it could be applied to more, but failed to consider the development issues of the janky old mechanic that it would keep regardless.

>>74410296
They'd need Doubling Season or something to exploit it, but Doubling Season exploits most things token or counter related in some way, even Planeswalker ETB loyalty counters are doubled by it unless they've changed the wording of the rules to nerf it within the last four years.

I made the Splice cost cheaper than the casting cost for reasons such as that, as you'll already need to play another Solider to get the economy from it even in Limited, which is usually balanced around turn 3-5 end-match outside Modern and Vintage which are turn 1-3, assuming aggro-on-aggro and nobody gets mana-fucked.
>>
>>74410498
You don't cast them *currently* because they don't have a CMC, if you added a CMC would they still be cast even...? Or would they simply now have a CMC and cost mana to play, and still not be "cast" as they use your turn's land-play?
>>
>>74411608
Ok, I hear you. What rarity would you make it?
>>
>>74411630
It's not because they have 0 CMC, its because they're lands. There are several 0 CMC cards that can be cast, hell there are cards with literally no mana cost that can still be cast. But lands explicitly don't get cast and don't use the stack. Changing that rule would open the door for a lot of interactions that would probably not be very healthy for the game.
>>
>>74411660
Only reason I could see to bump it up *from* common is to prevent it from flooding limited formats like draft and cube. I lucked out I guess by not touching the rarity in retrospect.

I mean in limited it's not bad as even without other soldiers to support it it's still a chump blocker for three mana, and with other soldiers it's still just a 1-mana weenie that can grow.

Compared to Desperate Reinforcements or other white token-generators it's really not uncommon or rare quality, and not even close to mythic.
>>
>>74412150
Best play in limited "vacuum" without an idea of what else is in the set would be playing two of them, one spliced onto the other, to get two 1/1s for 4 mana at instant speed as a combat trick to block with.

>>74412118
Yes, that's what I just said basically.
>>
I like the feedback in this part of the thread more than the first half because y'all are asking questions and we can have some actual back-and-forth discussion like we're having now, instead of the beginning when the posters in here were just insulting me, calling it stupid with zero useful feedback, or just being, "I don't like new things and thusly will not imagine ti with you, and also will insult you."

Especially when I started the thread by implying I was juggling two concepts, which didn't give /tg/ enough context that this was essentially a Choose one to debate:

-new basic lands with a CMC could be introduced that produce more powerful, newly themed mana colors.
or
-new mana colors balanced at the same power-level of existing colors.

Or weigh the pros and cons of each idea with me.

I will say that if you intend to put mana costs on lands then this >>74410498 is the better template to use. It doesn't require changing any rules and has the same result anyway. It would let people dump them into the graveyard instantly but there are a lot of lands that can do that already.

That said, I don't think making the individual mana more valuable is the best design decision even if you want it to be restricted in some way. It adds extra confusion with 'add any color of mana' cards, as well as cards that care about CMC.

By comparison, you could have the lands simply add more of the mana to your pool by default. Have them be like Coral Atoll and give you two to work with in exchange for going through the work of bouncing another land type.

That would allow you to keep cards of new colors at a similar level of the power curve, while being able to drawn on existing design to mess with it. As an example, you could put a creature that requires four Cyan mana slightly above curve, due to its demanding mana cost, as well as the fact that you'd essentially have to play Islands or whatever to get the lands into play for it, which also makes it similar to multicolored costs in a way.
>>
>>74404553
I should probably also point out now that I've calmed down a bit that it would probably be spelled and pronounced differently in Hebrew... you know, like Yhozjwha -> Yeshua -> Jesus.

>>
>>74412683
Third paragraph is actually a really good idea on how to rectify it with existing CMC mechanics.

The Rupture Spire however was what inspired me to try the costed lands in the first place, to save a line on land cards. It's still not "cast" as it's a land, but you have to pay the mana to play it as it has a CMC in that spot, in which card text would trump the base ruling that "lands don't cost mana" implying then that "lands don't cost mana unless otherwise stated" and then you still *play* the land rather than *casting* it, after paying for it's mana cost. I wanted to save WOTC a line of text on lands with the pitch, to print more complex lands with in the future.

Rupture Spire and existing lands wouldn't be updated to it, just leave them the way they are it's variety. Reprint or print more variants of that old system too if they feel like.
>>
>>74398585
Cards that say "add ANY color mana to your pool" break the balance you're striving for.
>>
Schizos need to be euthanized for their own sake.
>>
>>74413776
Another option might be to have the mana production ability be "U, T: Add CC to your mana pool", for the Cyan needing Island example. That would work more like Filter lands, though in a more restrictive fashion, and would be ideal for any non-basic cards that need the extra space.

I'd personally focus on one revolutionary mechanic at a time. That aside though, I am starting to question if a simple mana cost is enough to quite offset the benefit regardless.

For example, say you have a mono-green deck that wants to ramp up. First turn they play a Forest and a Llanowar Elf. Next turn they play a pool, and now have 3 mana to drop a mana rock. Then with another land drop on turn 3 they'll have 6 mana to play around with. It turns this new basic land into a form of ramp for whatever color can bring it out. By comparison, playing pure forests with the same play order leaves 5 mana on turn 3.

For further comparison for land types that might suit it better, something akin to a Bounce Dual like Azorius Chancery would keep things on curve if it didn't enter tapped. Turn 2 they could play the dual, bounce the forest, still have 3 for the mana rock with the elf, and then play the forest again on turn 3 for 5 mana total.

For another comparison with Filter Duals like Mystic Gate, the Forest would be used to fuel the mana generation each turn, still giving 3 mana on turn 2 for the rock, but on turn 3 you'd still need to tap something else alongside it to get two mana, thus making it akin to most other lands in pure output. The problem there is that by default basic land types give an innate ability to tap for mana, so the Filter Dual format wouldn't work for a basic land.

>>74417006
You posted this while I was typing this up, though it sounds like you see what I'm getting at. There's only so much that putting a one-time mana cost on a mana generator offsets the mana it generates. You'd get plenty of people playing this city >>74416989 just for how much mana it can make. Compare it to something like Dreamstone Hedron for example.

Of course, simple increasing the mana cost to play the lands kind of goes against the point of new colors, since people probably don't want to wait until turn 4 or later to start playing things.
>>
>>74417006
How does this version of the card work assuming adding wording such as Rupture Spire to the core rules on lands that have a number in the CMC position...?

Seems a bit *non*-basic, but it *works*... It works, right?
>>
>>74417124
>For example, say you have a mono-green deck that wants to ramp up. First turn they play a Forest and a Llanowar Elf. Next turn they play a pool, and now have 3 mana to drop a mana rock.
You'd have to tap the elf or the forest to play the pool, though. Invalidating:
>Then with another land drop on turn 3 they'll have 6 mana to play around with. It turns this new basic land into a form of ramp for whatever color can bring it out. By comparison, playing pure forests with the same play order leaves 5 mana on turn 3.

I think these are getting closer actually, although I'd say that the cost on Factory and City might be a little superfluous. To play factory, you would basically need to have 3 lands out already, two to pay the cost of it, and one to bounce to your hand. Same case with City, except you need four.

However, simply bouncing a land suffices for a lot of purpose. If you play a mountain turn 1 and then factory without the mana cost turn 2, you still have 2 mana as though you'd played a second mountain.

I think Shrine works if you want to keep the mana cost idea, since it does result in a temporary delay of mana but otherwise keeps things on-curve past that turn. Similar to tap-lands in that way, though still giving you access to the new color right away.

I would suggest focusing on the two on the left moving forward, sans the mana cost on factory. Something like City would be more fitting as a non-basic land.

You could also potentially reword the middle two as"When ~ enters the battlefield, return an untapped land you control to it's owner's hand." for something shorter. It would allow for some landfall shenanigans, but there are already cards that can do that, so it shouldn't be a major concern.
>>
>>74417479
What if I reduced the mana costs moving rightwards? I want to keep the lands from becoming a source of ramp while at the same time keeping them fast, so not having Honey until turn 5 *is* quite problematic. Turn four without ramp is more ideal.

I think it's a matter of simplicity, mainly. Having a land produce a lot of mana makes it fundamentally harder to balance, especially when trying to offset it with multiple distinct costs. If you want to keep them fast while avoiding ramp, then there are plenty of ways to do it, though the mana cost arguably goes against both goals.

To clarify, if you have to play mana to play a land, that inherently slows things down. But, because it's simply a one-time investment of mana, if the land produces extra, it can speed things up in the long term.

The ways to offset that would be to have a land that simply has to spend mana to make mana each time, retaining speed but avoiding ramp, or like what you have, bouncing a land in exchange for the increased production, effectively keeping the same curve but forcing you to play around it.

Another alternative might be to add a tapdown effect. Say you have the shrine add 2 mana, but it wouldn't untap during your next untap step. You could play it on turn 2 and still have 2 mana, but then you'd be behind the curve on turn 3. It would allow for a ramp effect beyond that, but the added slowness involved might mitigate it.

Another thing I would ask is if you're trying to make a single cycle of basic lands for all the new colors that function the same way, or if you want to give each one a different basic land gimmick. As in, would you want to have the example Shrine and Factory be the basic lands of those colors, or would you want them to both be like Shrine or both be like factory?

Yes exactly. My biggest concern, but also something I wouldn't mind to optimize and balance rather than quash.

I personally don't like building them as filter-boost lands as it complicates per-turn actions which bogs down games more than ETB costs.

This is something to play with for the non-basic versions (especially in cycles) for sure I think.

I think the tiered version would sell well in post-modern society, people like their "loot-rarity" scales, and the perfect version of the system would have kind of a feeling like that, beyond the existing common-uncommon-rare-mythic scale. Like a secondary rarity, especially when opening packs I want players to say, "Oo~, I got a Cinnabar card!" and then later on another pack, "Oh nice, a non-basic Cinnabar land!" (or even dual-lands with this newer revision of logarithmic scaling) and then think about how they can use the two with the other cards they already own or know about. The shrines and other 1-drop 1-producing lands are almost becoming a T1.5 if basic lands are T1 and Factories are T2, with Cities at T3. Like a Kardashev Scale. It's a tech tree for MtG now! Do you know how beautiful this is what you've helped me create?

Right, saving some of it for non-basics and higher rarities makes sense. I think the main thing to consider is that even if it is a more advanced set plan, basic lands should still be somewhat basic. Once you have a good baseline for the resources the new 'tier' needs to gain a manabase, then you can start playing around more with non-basic and higher rarity designs.

I would say that Shrine and Factory are currently the best of the designs. City I worry might just take too long to get going, especially if it retains the mana cost, although as long as it's not the only basic a color has access to that may not be a major issue.
>>

Earthdevs love the "fuck the poors" meme, so what if the really playable ones were just for non-basic, rare and mythic rarities?

Like a mythic non-basic City that produces HoHoHo on tap, costs 2, bounces 1, and does not say that the bounced lands have to be untapped for a bit of harrow-like ramp. Legendary or non-Legendary for balance you think? What would it aftermarket retail for to collectors in a healthy environment?

I wouldn't say the basic land city is unplayable, just that it's slow. You wouldn't see anyone playing many one or two drops of that color, and it would basically only be found in multicolor control decks if there's not a way to generate that color sooner. Even a version that needs 2 mana and 1 bounce is still only coming out on turn 3 unless you already have some ramp.

That aside, I think at this point you might want to try and playtest some of these ideas and see how they work out in practice. There's only so much that can be done theorycrafting

It's uncommon until we get the full art from GW's artist. If you want the gommon one learn Gothic and trade with a Terran for it. Birds of Paradise are rare there for starters, all Wastes and depression on Terra for T1 basic lands in the modern era, they depend on cities and gates (guess it's not Rift for Purple) already for food production.

You will often fidn Terrans salvaging basic lands and commons discarded at drafts, strike one up with conversation (but beware their English isn't always Earth-standard, Terran has their own variants that are similar enough for communication though (Bretonnian and Maerican)) and maybe you can make some trades, Earth rares for bulk Terran commons.

STILL APPLICABLE TO M:tG PLAYERS HERE! FUCKING READ BOTH MAGE RPGS!
>>
So this is what card designed by a crazy person look like.

Weird, I'd have thought a crazy person would have better game design sense.

Wait until rev5. Also go look at old M:tG cards from portal, and then suck your own dick in your closet, newfag, then drink some of my blood and become your own god-wizard.
>>
I do this for my parent as well, as they will not show up unless you have a fucking POOL, basic bitches.
>>

They're also *completely* balanced for a 6-drop multicolored T1.5 LegCrea. If you can cast them the game should have been over three turns ago by BM:tG logic.
>>

there's a series of level 10 EARTH-attribute machines known as railway that are focused on summoning 3 boss monsters based off of experimental nazi railguns from ww2 and they all have ridiculous names like superdreadnought rail cannon juggernaut liebe

Turn 1: Forest, Birds of Paradise
Turn 2: Pool, Genesculpted Kunoichi, 1 floating
Turn 3: Island, Snake Umbra on Genesculpted Kunoichi, Friendly Slime, 1 floating.
Good start for casual imho.

Pick one without an enabler.
>>
>>74424088
Also by BM:tG Vintage balance a game should be over by turn 3 so you would never be able cast them.

Come up with real complaints instead of being such a pick-me-assed bitch on an ANONYMOUS IMAGE BOARD!

OP hjere with the least revolutionary idea ever. What say you to moving a line of Relentless Rats text to the supertype Basic to open up more design space...?
>>
>>74424908
