This is obviously an advanced metropolis that had the technology and resources to build monster levees to deal with a huge sea level rise. Those towers in the wall are the size of skyscrapers so they would have normal elevators in them in addition to whatever clerical purpose would be required for that particular port. Even though we're only seeing one airship, we have to assume there's a lot of airship traffic as the air stocks poking off toward the inside are much larger than the sea docks. Or maybe they need bigger docks if they have to moor ON them instead of just bobbing along beside them if the airships are more like planes that need runways and hangars and shit.

In a world populated by different species with different lifespans, families with immortal members were not hard to find.

After the death of most adult male elves in the 100 Years War between Elves and Dwarves, the species was essentially doomed to eventual extinction. With barely no future available, elven females looked for comfort in human societies. They quickly integrated themselves and started working as maids, tutors, bards, etc.

Anne has been a maid of the family Dartia for 3 generations, tasked not only with house duties, but with raising the kids until they are old enough to live for themselves. She finds comfort in knowing she can still "give life" to someone, even if she's not their actual mother.

>It had taken ages, but Grunak was at last recognized as one of the mightiest and most respected mages in the Realm. But more than his incredible magical power he was famed for his humility and gentle demeanor, his love of simple things, even forsaking the opulent robes of other Archmages for a humble shirt and trousers. But this humbleness showed especially in his choice of familiar: Jim. His peers often wondered why he had never opted to summon a new, stronger familiar, Jim was no elder Wyrms, no bound arch fiend, no lord of the abyss, he was just a simple songbird who loved fresh wheat grains and worms. But Grunak wouldn’t have it any other way than to continue his journey as a magus with the friend who had been with him from the very start.

>Esmera emerged from her grotto beneath the old oak tree and turned her head to the north. The concert of morning birds and flying insects had just begun. She didn't have to look down to feel the snake crossing her foot. She sniffed the air. Nothing had stirred outside her home this night. "Good, the alliance holds for another night." was all she thought. Esmera enjoyed the music of the forest for many moments, motionless like the tree she slept beneath. She stooped to grab a handful of brown oak leaves from the forest floor and dropped them. They all flowed to the north from her hand so that was where she cast her gaze. She sighed. Esmera did not enjoy being summoned so early in the morning but the peasants woke up so damnably quickly it was impossible to keep them from worrying over nothing. Did they even understand the ritual necessary to get her attention? No, she thought, it is their lot to panic with every rain and changing season. It is my lot to help when I can. She immitated the oak's stillness before sighing again. Esmera set off north wondering what the peasants were cooking for breakfast and if they would be in the mood to share this time.

The prophecy of end times, in which the world would be consumed by a howling night, was true. Iskivir knew this, as he had seen into the future and saw exactly what that never ending nightmare entailed. He was a good man and a respected wizard, but he learned it would not be enough. More power, darker Magic was need to steer the world away from this apocalypse. The people reviled what he had become, the things he did in his unending conquest for greater strength, but it mattered little to him now. After Iskivir killed his closest friends, sacrificing them to attain lichdom, every subsequent step into the unthinkable was easy.

If even one person survived what he needed to do to stop the end of times, it would have been worth it.

>There are rumors, very few say, of a dungeon deep within the earth. Its corridors are empty, barren. Nothing chooses to live within it, and they say it's because of what resides at the bottom. A cursed treasure, a gateway to some other realm, there are many thoughts as to what it could be down there. I believe it is a prison of sorts. For what, you may ask? It's hard to say, I have only seen the outside of it in my dreams, a catacomb containing a cube that whispers... the words are unrecognizable, but somehow you just... know. Perhaps that prison contains something that was once a part of us all, and it wants to be free, for better or for worse.

>Cast your eye down, traveller. The Crimson Stair is not only named for the colored stone, you see. For it is my duty to tell you, as I tell all visitors, of the will of the Vigilant One, lord of these barren lands and slayer of the dreaded pirate Vixas. Firstly, His Vigilance's will is that you will pay for water you consume here. This will not be negotiated and you will pay the price asked of you. Secondly, by the grace of His Vigilance you may explore the city as you wish, no district is restricted against anyone here. The sole exception is the largest spire, the palace of His Vigilance, that place may not be explored after dark. If you go during the day you may audience with His Vigilance for He is always eager for news of the wider world. Finally, a personal word of advice, friend. Do not be emboldened by the lack of guards or sentries about the city or the palace. I assure you, His Vigilance is polite and proper, smiling and generous. Never forget that there are no guards because His Vigilance does not need them, in darkness or in light. Enjoy your stay, traveller.

They gather to celebrate, of all things, a wedding. It is tradition for the priestly caste to wed at the setting of the Father Eye, the equinox of six months of its light bringing life to the whole of the world. Before the month is up it will set totally over the horizon. Thus the plants, creatures, flyers and the oceans will sleep as we do every year. This wedding will still be true six months from now when they will awaken to the natural rhythms of this worlds cycle. The flowers will open, creatures stirring for sustenance. Let you warm each other in your long slumber, let yourselves be comforted. They are happy this day and when they awaken, they will be happy still. There is not much work left to be done and shortly after the ceremony they will ensure their food and water stocks are in place for six months of rest. Hibernate well, people of this strange world.

>The folk of Dy'Son stood proudly upon their newly constructed shrine
>Finally, their people had a place to pay tribute to the sun, and to the strange Sky-birds that often visited it but never landed, only disappeared from view.
>Now with the shrine complete, the village elder was ready to share the truth with the others. >The chosen Dy'Son stood there anxiously, eager to know the truth behind their labor.
>Some of them clicked their mandibles in anticipation.
>He tells them the Sky-birds are parents tending to their child, and soon the egg will hatch.
>He knows this because the sky has been getting brighter and redder, the sun-child grows.
>When it does, there will be a day of fire and anguish, but after that, the newborn Sky-Bird will land upon Dy'Son to care for it's people.
>It will vanquish the night-beasts that strike the village from below, and the village folk will be able to live without fear.
>The elder tapped idly on the odd, shiny bracelet he always wore upon his wrist. He had worn it ever since he arrived at the village, more than 40 cycles ago.
>He told the others that in 3 days he will leave the village on a long pilgrimage with no return. He was going to go be with the Sky-Birds.
>He thanked everyone for their cooperation with the shrine, and that he had learned much from each and every one of them.
>He said he loved the village and it's people.
>The elder's sight-hoods leaked water, a sign of overhydration.
>This puzzled the onlooking group, but the elder continued talking, showing no other signs that his dust carapace had been fractured.
>The elder had one request before they headed back to the village below.
>He wished to take with him two children on his pilgrimage, a male and female. He wanted to show them a special place, known only to him.
>If anyone in the group was willing to offer up their child, it would greatly please the Sky-birds. He knows this may be a difficult choice.
>The group had until his departure to decide.

>Shahar Amira and the Robe of Stars

Once upon a time, in the days when stars walked the earth in the twilight, there was a prince. In the fashion of princes in those days, he was strong, and proud, and noble of aspect. Upon his head he wore a coronet of gold, a keffiyeh of blue, and a robe of deepest black.

Of men, he had many and doughty, of horses, hundreds and of the blood most pure. But also it was the fashion in those to take many wives of the most beautiful, and he had none.

In the cool of the evening, when the sands grow quiet, the prince was walking among his gardens. They were the finest gardens, of palm and jasmine, myrrh-gum and aloe. Sweet scents of lotus filled pools of purest water. Starlight reflected in them as the sun fell, to the call of prayers.

It was in this garden that the prince met his wife.

The plague that swept through the city and its streets, the sad bloody tears of its unfortunate inhabitants, barred from the outside, offered to the Gods in an attempt to quell the sickness. The duke died last after having seen his whole world collapsing.
>You must go back to the city, you who crawled through the stone walls, who lost your friends when the wall fell on them, crushing them to bits. There's a new duke in town, new inhabitants, monsters of an even worse lot. The King has obliged you to guide his soldiers, pompous fools who are looking for vain glory. >And that was merely an unintended, albeit useful side effect
>Within the globules suspended by the arcane clockwork, it looked as if another ocean churned, but one made of arcane magic and the stuff of divine creation itself

Simulation theory was correct. In mans study of of the subatomic world they uncovered the fundamental building blocks, the code of reality. And in their hubris they tried to edit the laws of the universe. But they failed to understand the dangers of editing code as the program is still running. In what can only be described as a cascadeing series of errors, reality itself began to unravel around them. The errors are spreading, growing into towering pillars that ray out into infinity. It is not long before all is consumed by the error. But some take solace 8n 5he fact, they never actually existed at all.

The protagonist walked out to an overhang off the path to look at his ancestral home. Giant demons haunted this place. War, Death, corruption. Their spirits cast shadows on this one prosperous land, strangling it to the edge of oblivion. Would he be able to wrest control from him aunt and uncle? Was he enough to to replace them even if he could? The problems seemed insurmountable. But one go forward.

Sure the forbidden spell released a lot of demons, but the magical phenomena that cropped up in the region yields a bounty of research opportunities. Consider the floating islands of Mer. We've got them more or less corralled at the mouth of the Kerpernian river and they make excellent observational posts. The smaller ones are being tested as over-land transport barges. The Royal Engineers are working to extract whatever mineral gives them flight, but the University is 100% positive that elusive teleportation magic must be involved. I mean, come on, where would the spring-water come from?

Stories had been told of a great apocalyptic war that ravaged the world long ago by powerful vain autocrats that led vast armies in massive humanoid robots that served more as monuments to their egos than as machines of destruction.

Such stories have not passed into legend as the scars of the war still linger in the form of scars upon the natural Earth's landscape such as valley sized craters, and abandoned overgrown military facilities along with scavengers hoping to find remains of the old technology that existed before the war closed a chapter on humanity's history and another opened.

The greatest reminders of the war were in fact from the fallen giants. Treasure troves of raw material and technology to be used and reverse engineered in their own right. The exposed topsides of them a perfectly elevated position above the ground from marauders.

And so human survivors began to descend upon the giants like flies. Building cities on top of them like fungus growing from a dead carcass.

The apocalyptic war closed a chapter of humanity's history, and from the remains of it a new chapter began.

The fortress world of Ea prime started out as a military installation designed to protect a strategic location in the pan galactic war for the purposes of protecting a strategic location in the Magellanic cloud. Quickly gaining a reputation as an impenetrable fortress it has since become an independent planet state building layers upon layers of buildings upon each other, housing billions of citizens. It has not escaped urban decay as there is a sharp divide between the citizens based on what city layer they are living in while the lowest levels contain many secrets......

I was there the day that the 3 warring kingdoms decided to stop their internecine war, and take up arms together. We all stood together, proud and shoulder to shoulder to shoulder with enemies turned allies, who but weeks ago, we would have happily stove in their skulls or crucified from the mountain peaks. The great remembrances catching the strength and honour of the Ferric Wolves, the Barbarian King wielding his mattock capable of felling giants. The Serpentine Empire, with their Dragon Banner, in front of which stood their Warrior Prince with his mind crafted Starblade, and the Hand of the People, representing the great multitudes of but a simple farm labourer who led a peasants crusade, only to recieve blessings of the Goddess of Autumn and the Goddess: his fieldscythe ran along her fingers and havinbt drawn blood, it was capable of sending the souls straigbt to afterlife and precenting judgement.

And yet non of that was enough. The Lich hordes came and annihlated them through sheer numbers, only securing enough of a phyrric victory to prevent him from consolidating said win. Our only hope to win now is to reclaim these lost weapons before the Lich regains his might. Will you help?

>John stood on the edge of the stone wharf, trench coat flapping in the wind while he struggled to light a cigarette. Finally, after struggling for a few minutes, he took a drag and looked out to sea. The giants were approaching quickly, their flesh writhing if it could be called flesh. The Spatial Anomaly had occurred a mere 3 weeks ago, yet mankind was already on the run underground as extra dimensional entities poured through the rift like a tear in the sky above Boston. John didn't really have any interest in spending what remained of his life below ground, and so had ignored the evacuation orders. His final moments fast approaching, he took one final drag off his cigarette and looked placidly out to sea for his final, humble act.

>As far as we know, it just materialised from nowhere on the 27th October 2032 near Earth and came in for a touchdown in the Pacific the next day. From then on, it just.....stood there. Ignoring everything we did including, in the case of one moronic country, nukes. Yeah, you can probably guess who *that* was, not that it did much. Anyway, it proved pretty harmless aside from the adverse tectonic effects, tsunami and shockwave of its landing, which did admittedly kill a lot of people and rather soured opinion just a bit. Still, it didn't actively attack and started drinking water from the oggin, putting it and whatever unfortunate sealife into that huge tank. Took a few weeks, it musta chugged something like one or two million cubic Ks of water, enough to drop sea level by twelve feet along with associated coastal chaos. Suffice to say nobody really cares about sea level rise nowadays.

>The photo? Hold your horses, mate. I'll get to that in a minute.

>Anyway, after it filled itself, it took off again and dematerialised. Just like that. Frankly, not everyone want to know how and where it went. What we do know however, is that creatures like that are out there, and next time they might not just drink and dash. Yes, the image. The thing was so sanity-defyingly huge, it extended well up into low Earth orbit, just shy of the 500K mark. Clobbered a few unfortunate sats and Tiangong, but what everyone really cared about was ol' ISS. It was scheduled to impact on the 31st and only had the fuel to make one dodge, so Houston called them home. That photo was taken by some ESA 'naut on the Crew-31 evac flight and remains the most famous taken of the Stranger, as we called it. The last ever image of the ISS in the background really adds to to the scale of it and insignificance of us. Ironically, it probably saved NASA a headache on how to dispose of that decrepit old box of bolts when it crashed into it on the 4th Nov.

>Next time, we'll be ready. We hope.

The N79 Body Glove was the weapon of the future; it allowed a man to melt into the enviroment, become strong enough to flip a car or to run so fast as to become a blur in the eyes of mere mortals. Yet it had one flaw; the self-repairing nanites made it so that it bonded with the user. Over time it would become inseparable, taking over key functions in the body.
To this day one can find shambling abominations, suits tightly wrapped around dead bodies, piloted by rudimentary AI carrying out their last directive.

In a misguided attempt to gain the upper hand in the Cold War, the Siamese Khaganate tampered with ancient Egyptian theurgy and brought the mummy of Seti XIV back to life, intending to use his knowledge of the dark arts to their advantage. Enraged at the state he found the world in, the pharaoh quickly dispensed with his handlers and began raising the dead to create an army and overthrow the pagans who took over the world during his absence.

The United Kingdom of Lyonesse and Ker-Ys tried fighting the undead horde with conventional weapons, but all of their attempts proved fruitless, as the pharaoh just reconstituted his lost legions with profane rituals. After long deliberations and much to Vatican's protests, the united forces of the living had to exhume the twelve apostles and use their hallows to create holy warheads. With this literal doomsday weapon the living made one last attempt to annihilate the hordes of Seti XIV before he turned the planet into one big Underworld.

When the Lusitanian War started, not even the most radical analysts could have predicted that at the end of it, only a single ironbird would remain from the feared Muscogee Skyfleet, yet this is exactly what happened. As three of their five mobile airfields were destroyed during the battle known as Purple Rain's Blunder, the Muscogee have lost their air superiority and could never regain it for the remainder of the conflict. A series of abortive air raids devastated their skyfleet even further, until only the Zephyr remained due to being recalled back to Casablanca for repairs.

It was this ironbird that was used to evacuate the last Muscogee soldiers and civilians from the city when the elven army entered it in late Thermidor, 2032. Although the war was as good as lost by that point, the soldiers remained optimistic. After all, they were amongst the few lucky ones to return back home alive and well. Two radio plays were since made about the final flight of the Zephyr as well as a popular calculator game that broke the sales charts in 2045.

Aside from its obvious extraterrestrial origin, the scientists could never agree on the exact nature of the object known as the God's Left Big Toe. This name was given to it by the local platybelodon herders of Yog-Zon-Duqq, who first stumbled upon it two thousand years ago. Archaeological findings indicated that these tribesmen worshipped it and sacrificed blue-haired children to it to appease whatever divinity they associated with it.

Centuries passed, people's understanding of the world around them deepened, and yet the God's Left Big Toe only grew more mysterious. Its markings baffled many generations of scientists who couldn't decide whether they represented text or primitive art, but mostly why they keep changing with every lunar cycle. The material that the object was made of resisted every attempt to take samples of it, until modern methods could finally determine with high certainty that it was organic. But even this revelation only created more questions, mainly whether the God's Left Big Toe was an object or a very unusual living organism.

As any revolutionary new technology, ethervision brought with it not only endless possibilities for communication and entertainment, but also great dangers. Soon after the appearance of the first commercially sold etherboxes their owners found out that their machines could not only pick up the signals from their local ether pumps, but also from unidentified sources that appeared to be located in another world. Most of these mysterious channels only showed white noise, slide shows of geometric shapes or nothing at all, yet some aired bizarre shows that combined absurdist deadpan humour with existential horror.

These shows remained a mere curiosity until the release of the ill-fated M-56 "Nephthys" etherbox, which, due to a major construction defect, could allow ethereal objects to pass through the screen into real life under certain circumstances (chiefly on church holidays). Hordes of bizarre creatures from mystery channels rushed headlong into the material world like if they've been waiting patiently for this moment. While some of them were relatively harmless, many others turned out to be violent and began attacking innocent people. Thousands of etherwatchers fell victim to these monsters until it was figured out that they could be harmed by taking ferrotypes of them.

As an industrial empire, the Basque Technocracy produces a lot of scrap that need to be disposed of. Due to its toxic and hazardous nature, a lifeless craggy wasteland was chosen as the site for the empire's greatest industrial waste dump. Yet life always finds a way, and intelligent life finds it twice as quick. An abundance of rare scrap metal that could be salvaged and sold on the black market attracted a lot of drifters and homeless people from all over the Empire, losers and rejects who couldn't build a life for themselves elsewhere. Although many of them are solitary, most are organised into an underground society of sorts with peasants, knights and even a king.

The peasants seek out edible food, while the knights have rudimentary technical knowledge and are tasked with finding and salvaging useful machine parts. To make their task easier, they ride all kind of crazy custom hot rods assembled from random car parts found across the landfill. The king of all technohobos is a massive cyborg with lots of mind-enhancing brain implants ingeniously made from scrap. His authority over the great landfill is absolute, thanks in no small part to the mind reading and mind control powers given to him by these implants.

The war was over.
The Empire has finally claimed the lands which for the longest time remained untamed.
Their many airships, rebranded and recolored to suit for the victorious celebration.
Their sails like always, now less urgently pushed by magic of the wind to direct and keep them afloat, combined with their powerful steam engines.
Soon, those ships and their oarsmen would be decommissioned or otherwise deemed obsolete.
In their final moments, they were more majectic than ever before.

>I'm a detective, I track down the bad guys and find out all their secrets. My race gives me an advantage here, when people look at me, they just see a dumb brute of a giant whose expertise extends to swinging a club and no further. I'm all to happy to lean into this by dressing and acting the part, since if people think I'm a meathead they don't consider the possibility that the one on their tail is actually the one they think least of and I can get into all sorts of places and get away with all sorts of snooping because of that. When I can fit, that is.

>So, that time. Baron's manor got robbed, criminals made off with some things, yadda yadda, I'm nearby and get contacted to find where they went and who they are. Usual stuff. Very easy at first, their cart left big ruts in the soft dirt to follow until it hit a rock and the swagmobile lost a wheel (and the Jester got away, hey!). From the looks of it, they tried to inspect and fix the wheel before getting surprised by something, tried to drag the cart off on an axle before abandoning it and taking off on the horses. Cart still had the loot in it, so they must have been in a big rush. It was then I noticed the dropped sword and and body with that telltale arrow sticking out of its chest. Stupid, stupid, stupid. They'd evidently blundered into elven-controlled territory and paid for it, and now I had as well.

>I still can't believe I didn't catch an arrow too. Maybe they didn't notice me, maybe they liked me for some reason, I don't know and don't question it. You bet I grabbed an item as proof and legged it back out of there, and I'd strongly doubt the others got far. Told the baron they fell afoul of elves and his stuff is as good as gone, but that stubborn old bastard will probably still send people to try and get it back. I wonder how many will have to join the thieves on the forest floor before he accepts that fact.

The first colonies on the planet Naramvar were named by their crews. Many chose people's names and mythological figures and other such cliche things. The crew of the colony in sector DF-9 named theirs Iceland, after the surrounding regions' resemblance to the black, cold Icelandic moonscapes. Fortunately, Naramvar does not experience major seasons, removing the bitingly cold and dark winters of Earth's Iceland.

The bleak surroundings and climate does not make Iceland an appealing posting, though there are nonetheless many with the correct mindset volunteering for it. Indeed, there was debate over whether the colony was worth it at all, with it being eventually decided to establish it as a research hub to handle the entire region's planetary research efforts as well as administration and services. Still, to Earth (technically a misnomer now, but the term has stuck) scientists, the place is a geological paradise with much active volcanism and associated processes ongoing on a spectacular scale. The possibility of generating geothermal-electric power with much greater ease than expensive, bulky and complex fusion reactors is also under investigation. To date, some three thousand people inhabit the complex, expected to grow to over five thousand in the coming few years.

In the dark and grim future of 22nd century AmeriKKKa, Japanese-Amerikkkans are forced to go through the painful process of deep-sex change, aka Solid Interface Substantial Sex Yield, or SISSY for short.
Once it's finished, the end result is a living meat-product more feminine than natural women could ever be, constantly aroused and in serious need for male attention, which is supplied by their American masters, who own them and can do as they please with them. Not that they complain, being hopelessly submissive and willing to accept any order.

This is the story of José López, American GI just returned from the Andamanese civil war, ready to enjoy uncle Sam's gift of two loving next generation ex-male wives.

2 million years ago the world froze in time. Absolutely nothing happened during this time, no life, no significant climate, no tectonic activity.
Before this spell was cast, great apes began roaming from the trees and daring their oversized predators. Some found comfort in caves, stretching deep, deep, deep within caves. Their curious brains could not resist the eternal darkness, and their bodies soon adapted. Their senses dulled to nothing, their bodies reverted to aquatic dependency, but their minds expanded. They could communicate without words, see dimensions without sight, and even move things without touch. These creatures found a great power, and within it created a god. This god ape resided within a mountain, and curious of its power, cast a spell to freeze the world and itself into an eternal slumber.
Fast forward in time, the world eventually melted. Apes returned to the surface and created societies. The strength and vitality of the sun fueled them, and they mined mountains and farmed lands to grow.
Miners began to pierce a mountain, seeking riches and resources. But this stirred the ape god. His dreams awakened the apes of old, their psychic cries piercing through the depths.
The miners heard these cries, and panicked as their bodies transformed. Their minds reverted to primitives, and felt an anger towards the surface. A nearby farm is spotted for the miners, and it must be perished for the ape god.

Little Miguel wanted to be fast. Faster than anyone else in the world. With this desire as his fuel, he ventured out into his notoriously violent neighborhood to train, running as fast as he could for as long as he could. As he ran he always thought about his personal hero, Sonic the Hedgehog, and his many adventures. Miguel knew of the many perils of his surroundings but he insisted on braving the streets nonetheless, much to the dismay of his parents. Sonic always went up against greater dangers and if Miguel was to become a man of such caliber he too would have to face his own dangers. Fortune favored the aspiring speedster for a time and he was left to his running undisturbed despite a sudden spike in the already substantial crime rate of the area.

The sun was setting on Miguel after another long day of sprinting around his neighborhood. Though the darkness of night was slowly overtaking him, Miguel was not worried. Nothing bad had ever happened to him despite the many warnings given to him by his parents and he was confident of his safety. Miguel was on the last stretch home when he heard a group of men arguing across the street from him. His curiosity got the better of him so he decided to stop and listen. They seemed to be yelling about some sort of conspiracy regarding a large sum of money then without warning, several of the men drew their pistols and fired on the others. The men continued to fire until they were certain that the alleged conspirators were dead and with the deed done, they put their guns away and began to leave.
>>
>>84101664
That was until one of them noticed Miguel still standing across the street, frozen in shock. He brought the child to the attention of his comrades and once again they began debating, this time about the morality of shooting a child versus their duty to leave no witnesses to their deed. Eventually one of the men had enough and stormed away from the others and towards Miguel. The child knew that he should be running, yet his legs refused to listen to him. He simply stood frozen as the man pulled out his gun once more, pointed it at Miguel, and pulled the trigger. A flash was all that he saw.

The flash was what brought Miguel back to reality. The photographer thanked him and as Miguel turned to leave, he thought about the trauma from his childhood again. He brought a gloved hand up to the shoulder where the man had shot him. He was fortunate that the man with the gun was such a poor shot. He looked towards the child sized casket encased in glass that sat on the back of the funerary carriage. It was Sonic the Hedgehog themed. Miguel recalled the reverence he had for the fictional Hedgehog in his youth. Maybe that tinge of nostalgia is why he agreed to take this job. He continued gazing at the casket, thinking about how once upon a time he was not unlike the child in the casket when his vision shifted to the image of his costume reflected back at him in the glass. Miguel smiled weakly to himself beneath his plush helmet. So this was ultimately how he would become more like Sonic, was it? He supposed then that his childhood dream was finally fulfilled.

"The sky buckled, and opened up like Pandora's Box.

We still don't know what it truly was. Professor Fukuyama insists there were physical attack craft equipped with some manner of light-bending technology, hence the strange and distorted optical phenomena. Opposite of him, Alexandrov insists spacetime itself was manipulated and distorted to open up a funnel or wormhole. The barrel of an interdimensional gun, aimed at every major city.

Doesn't matter. Whatever it was, the type and volume of energy unleashed was out of this world. Hundreds of millions were annihilated in what was, at once, a firestorm, an electric discharge, a kinetic blast... Every kind of destructive potential, as if whoever perpetrated this wanted to account for every kind of possible defence.
Yet we theorize the intent behind the Annihilation, if there was one, wasn't to, well... Annihilate. Not fully. It didn't go for military bases, it didn't touch crop fields, fertile regions, even factories. It unleashed death and horror upon the teeming masses of humanity, but left no lingering radiation, posion, anything of the sorts, far as we can tell, and we looked thoroughly.
It came and went like a hurricane.

This raises the third hypothesis, raised by the Johnson Team. That this was no attack. No one came here, and decided to do this to humanity. That it happened as a result of something we don't yet understand in the order of the universe. Something about so many neurons firing in one place at once, so many thoughts, so many minds attracted this, like a metal rod attracts lightning.

I have no ida which answer I prefer."

>Reproach had been approaching New Leicester for a while now, we all knew it was coming. What's Reproach? That giant killer automaton thing, we still don't really know what it was after other than breaking things with REPROACH written on its collar in some Muscovy tongue, apparently coming to punish us for....whatever. Anyway, enter me. Proud crew of Transcontinental Railway Engine No. 57, Charon. We'd been driving evacuation trains nonstop for the past three days and were all exhausted, but kept going - we knew we didn't have enough time, so every minute we spent resting was less people saved.

>That day was a Friday, and the whole population of the city was trying to board trains to somewhere, anywhere. The Army had to keep the mass of people at bay and even shot a couple of them. Can you believe they were doing the Birkenhead drill? At a train station? Madness. As far as we knew we still had an hour before Reproach arrived in the city centre, but the knowledge we were one of the last trains just made people more desperate. Then a shadow fell over the station roof, followed by a giant mechanical fist and the sound of shattering glass and shearing steel. It was here early! Broke an unfortunate Upper train in half and caved in half the station roof. We didn't know it at the time, but a girder crushed one of our rear carriages and lost us the rear fifth of the train.

>All order collapsed and it became a free-for-all as everyone tried to clamber aboard for their lives, but we'd delayed as long as we could and put full steam ahead, damn the wheelspin and smoke. It watched us go with its one beady metal eye as we pulled out of the station as fast as we could and people still tried to grab on as we accelerated. I still remember their faces as they watched their last hope for survival speed away, abandoning them in the collapsing station hall at the predations of a massive omnicidal automaton. I still see the scene when I sleep. May their souls rest in peace.

The town was famous for one thing, the giant bones scattered about. It started with the pub, when the owner hoisted a femur the size of a tree above the door. The locals loved it, and it boomed in popularity. Many stores began similar things, but where did the bones come from?
The mayor declared a holiday which shocked the populace, “GIANT SACRIFICE DAY”. Once a year a giant would be killed in the town square, and the remains would be decorated. Many were disgusted, but a few adventurers successfully lured a giant into town. They showered it with gifts, artwork, and glory, and when it was weakest, tied it up and began a ceremony. The giant was stabbed in the heart, and soon torn limb by limb.
Many merchants grabbed parts and fled town. A small troupe carries a giant boob you can grab for 1 silver. They claim it is an ogre’s tit for some reason.
The holiday was a success and, for whatever reason, is still celebrated today.

Homoerectus never made it to the New World.
Instead it became dominated by massive apes that evolved separately from humans. Primitive in mind and social structure, but powerful in body and aggressive with great fecundity.

During the Final Great War, the earth itself was tainted with pestilence and pulmonary toxins across the continent.
Wearing gas masks and using heavy amounts of sanitizing agents on your skin and body became the standard. Many fully clothe themselves from head to toe constantly when outside - especially younger people.

It still couldn't understand what had exactly had happened. It knew its creator had, over the course of the past few days, registered new receivers to its network and installed a new interface protocol to its systems, but with no reference as to what model these receivers would allow it to send and receive data from, it had not spent much time deliberating on these new additions. Then, this morning, its master had positioned itself in front of a mirror and slipped two inactive receivers into her hair before attaching their control device around her neck, and clicking it into an active state.
And suddenly, it was looking into the mirror, humming receivers fitting snuggly onto its head and fingers feeling at the slightly constricting item on its neck. It could still feel itself in the rest of the facility, operating every piece of machinery, but the feedback of every one of those was a faint noise compared to the feedback from this.
Eventually, it got up and wandered about. Walking wasn't hard, that was as familiar to this unit as the basic operations of any other mobile unit, though it detected the pattern was altered after registering awareness of the items on its feet.
Finding a place to sit again, it called over more of its units and looked at itself, in this new unit with such responsiveness it seemed to ground the attention of its whole system. It thought such a unit could become a distraction, so it turned to locating its master. She had lapsed from its senses, but when it did, it would suggest she create a different system solely for running this one.
