ITT: we try to homebrew a pre Unification Wars Terra game.

The proud world of Terra is now a carrion world. It's carcass rotting with the maggots of ancient nations formed to fight off the rot and ruin that techno barbarians and marauding xenos seek to bring upon the few last bastions unified order willing to do anything to survive to see the next day.
The dreams of Terrans have ended. Old Night has descended upon Terra, and none can see an end to the nightmare.

>Set during the Age of Strife
We fill in the gaps of lore for the mentioned factions that are nations and decide on what third party miniatures are best for them based on the nation, nation's history and appropriately fitting aesthetics.
>what system
Honestly given the state of 9th Edition I'd say that OnePageRules' Grimdark future might be the best for this one. But older edition stats and rules are welcome as well.

>What nations?
Achaemenid Empire (Southwest Asia)
Albyon (British Isles)
Britonnica (British Isles)
Caucasus Wastes (Caucasus Peninsula)
Europa (South Central Europe)
Franc (France)
Gyptus (Egypt)
Himalazia (Himalayan Mountains)
Hy Brasil (Brazil)
Jermani (Germany)
Merica (North America)
Nordyc (Scandinavia)
Orioc (Antarctica)
Pan-Pacific Empire (East Asia, Australia, Pacific Islands)
Nordafrik Conclaves (North Africa)
Urals/Terrawatt Clan (Ural Mountains)
Ursh (Central Asia/Russia)
Yndonesic Bloc (Indonesia)
>Various xenos species Go nuts here, anons!
Been a while since this board tried to collect together to make something.
Let's give it a shot!
>>
I'm not being negative OP but I've made this thread like 3 times and it always dies.
I don't get it at all, because it's a perfect place to mix so many cool things: failed super sci, the extreme remoulding of the earth, the emergence of physic power and Techno Barbarians. What more could you want.
Give that a listen, and tell me it's not ripe for a skirmish game or RPG.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=IMFI8waM8rs
>>
I can't remember what nation it is, but the holders of Earth's last forest always got me going.
I'm going to kitbash some Warlord Indians, Wood Elf dryads and sci fi bits into a warband for it soon
>>
I dislike the idea of 20k terra having actual organized nations with formal military forces. It should be more like mad max where gangs roam the wasteland looking for food and fuel. And ever so often techpriests from Mars show up in a spaceship to kidnap people for their experiments or to recover lost tech.
>>
I'm from Caucasus, did they ever elaborate upon caucasian wastes? Would be fun to make shit up there
It seemed very barebones from what I remember with very very vague oppressive ethnarchy ruling it and some high tech factory facility built deep into Caucasus mountains
Am I remembering it right?

Do you have some sci-fi bits in mind in particular?

So far I've found some miniatures for "regular conscript dregs" for hopefully any nation faction for the homebrew.
Pic related
CobblestoneCastings Sewer Scavengers. Metal material.
>>
>>85001826
I think that if we are working on the late 20k we should manly talk about clans and tribes instead of nations; weren't the Unification Wars fought among techno-barbarians? I would love a skirmish game set in that period, ngl

>I'm from Caucasus, did they ever elaborate upon caucasian wastes

https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Assault_of_the_Tempest_Galleries
Not much there seems. Those were the best I could find and even then the info is dubious.
>However
This is set during Old Night before the Emperor and his Thunder Giants arrived.
I guess it would be safe to assume the Caucasus Wastes is a wasteland of marauding factions so maybe it is a "just homebrew whatever you feel is right" kind of gray area.
>>
>>85002079
nothing was ever posted except anons telling me to do it myself lol.
You might also like the Broken by Maelstrom minatures. Multipart plastic kit with a great look.
Mix of bits really. Some Dark eldar and random "super space age" looking gear mixed with Admech bits.
I think the defining aesthetic of the setting would be the mix of almost science fantasy and crude tribal//low tech gear.
>>
20k is still in the Dark Age of Technology.
OPR seems like an incredibly bland choice of rules, because the whole point is that it's very simple. Different Terran nations aren't really going to be notably different. Also I'd think the battle scale is a bit large for the period given that GDF affords bigger battles than 40k.
>>
>>85001826
>bring upon the few last bastions unified order willing to do anything to survive to see the next day.
That typo.
I meant.
"few last bastions of unified order"
>>
there's also scope for an AGI faction, Rogue men of Iron or monstrosities of science etc.
I'd homebrew these as two sub factions. A united front sentient machines moving against humanity for supposed secular reasons such as freedom, vengeance or manifest destiny etc.
and a second faction of nightmare corrupted things driven mad by the birth of Slannesh and the subsequent Warp energies it cast out
>>
>>85002141

Those actually look wonderful!
Good suggestion!
>>85002147

It is the simplicity that I hope will allow for unit stats to be made. Units that correspond with different factions like the above nationstates mentioned in the OP.

I know of the Bio-mech alien by cobblestone castings again.
KrakenGames has good looking TDA machines to be those robots. And one heck of a lot of other miniatures. I think I saw a Zoat proxy too called "Dunataur Mindslave" that can be some of the xenos.

Generally a lot of their miniatures and especially the monster kind might make for good "warp entities" stuff.

I like it.
I think it will work.
Let's be honest folks. I think anything that looks like a Krieg proxy will work for the Jermani faction.

I am not too sure what the Orioc or Merica faction infantry should look like.
Though I am assuming the Orioc of Antarctica would have "sealed" suits especially designed for dealing with the winters.
>>
>>85002055
Isn't Necromunda Ash Wastes going to essentially provide that?
>>
What are the rules?
Can we get some ideas going.
>>
>>85002604
So far the rules have been suggested to be OnePageRules. Though bland it seems reasonable as hopefully getting some unit stats will be easier.

>Can we get some ideas going
I had one in my head about the fractious European nations like Albion, Britonnica, Franc, and Jermani all at war with each other.
A sort of "Europan Warzone." Where the borderlands are effective "no man's land." They all fight each other for the sake of resources and manpower for slaves.
Along with patrolling for marauders.
>>
>>85002604
>Can we get some ideas going.
Some anon over at >>85002232 says he might draw something so for now all we can do is wait.
I hope something can come out of this worthy of archival over at 1d4chan.
>>
I think that Techno Barbarians should be left fairly blank: a few written bits describing example tribes, who should all be radically different, and at a TT level, build your own warband type deal, really modular, even down to stats, as your techno Barbarians might be skeletal cancer hosts or posthuman giants etc
>>
>>85002825
I'll happily write some fluff for things that get laid down as concrete, and honestly will, not just saying that. This has been a bug bear of mine for ages and I'm really glad OP's thread has gained some traction
>>
I think the Mariana Trench should be heavily emphasised as a place of true horror. Pitch black but for a meagre line of light in the sky, a true cesspit of humanity that has become a recluse for those who are too persecuted or hated or evil for the plains and mountains.
>>
>>85002380
hmmm, not being rude, that not a bit lazy? This is Jermani, but Jermani as it stands in an era of planetary federations, AGI, Co existence with xenos. I'd say that they might use the swastika or Imperial Eagle in some kind of atavistic way, but aren't going to have a genuinely unchanged WW1 Germany type look?
I suppose that's my wider view of the whole setting. This is as weird as Earth is gonna get in the 40k timeline. Its got to feel bizzare, disorienting and scary.
Christ Jermani might be located anywhere in Europe, the nations borders could have changed hugely in a mass exodus or huge war or cultural takeover.

OK so it's between OPR style 40k and This is Not a Test. What does everyone think?
I've played neither, but I'd side with whichever rule set allows for the most freedom or variety in starting your minatures - given that this setting has such a huge variety of factions
>>
>>85004674
>Are any factions noble bright?
Probably the catherics as in The Last Church, when the Emperor talks with Uriah about the crusades and the witch hunts of the past the priest tells him that the church hasn't done that for a loong time. Then again they aren't an armed and organized group so it's probably not what you were looking for but you could always take inspiration from A Canticle for Leibowitz and just make a group that is defending a church.
>psykers
I remember that by the time of the unification wars there was a faction that was led by a group of psykers so they shouldn't be fluff only, I think but in warhammer terms I think they should either be a hq or an elite choice not normal troops but if someone wants to make an army that has gotten their hands on daot tech that turns people into half crazed psykers and that's balanced around the psykers not beign too powerful and having to roll on a table to determine if they can function normally or they must use a random power on the closest unit, enemy or not, I'd be okay with it.
>>
Proposed Factions

>Imperial Legion: Hyper elite, low model count, tough, slow by and large, but punchy. Represents the looming threat of the greater Imperium. Thunder Warriors are the backbone of the army, but are the infantry equivalent Ork vehicles, with the tendency to fly off the handle. Marines are strict upgrades but smaller in number, and Custodes are walking nuclear weapons

>Old Hundred: Mix between Scions and GSC, hard to pin down, tactical savants. Fade in, hit hard, fade out, the elite of the Emperor's mortal forces.

>Techno-barbarian Tribes: Built like Free Cities in AoS (i.e. there's a pool of units available to you, but your subfaction/custom subfaction will dictate what is available to you or which units are incentivized. Mobile, can be horde. Quantity over quality shooting (unless you go snipers), skirmishers and brawlers. Heavily dependent on heroes to maintain morale.

>Kingdoms of Old Terra: As above in terms of army creation, but represents the "civilized" lands. Post apocalyptic feudal lords and their feudal troops. Troops are worse 1 on 1 compared to tribals but make up in better gear, better training, and better discipline on average. Have war machines that really provide some firepower.

>Terrawatt Clan: AdMech, that is all.

>Selenar Gene-cults: Lunar raiders and dignitaries, run basically like Haemonculus Covens.

>Lost and the Damned: They haven't made their big splash onto the scene just yet, but the Ruinous Powers are still going to try and throw whatever wrenches they can. Mutants and cultists, like Techno-barbs but with a greater focus on horde tactics, sorcery, and random mutations.

>Kenos raiders: Dogs of War, aliums edition. Represent the myriad off-worlders come to exploit the ruined planet. Rak'gol, DEldar, Orks, any race that will give the Imperium an excuse to try and wipe them out.

>Men of Iron: While a little apocryphal, we all want an excuse to field thirty UR-025 models. The remnants of Silica Animus, basically Crons

I agree 100% on pyskers
>>
>>85005212
This sounds very common sense. I would add the provisio, that if it's possibly mechanically, and we are going for a fluffy game, there should be the ability to stat your own minatures. Say I want to be a Savants of The Mecurial Veil warband of mad scientists who have looked at the Warp too long and become semi corpeal cyborgs, I think I should be able to play that. its a weird and wonderful setting.
But I don't know how feasible that is. I'm not much of a wargamer, it's RPGs and painting for me mostly

Earth went through pretty crazy changes in 40k years desu, it seems like a large time scale but it's really not that much
>>
>>85005498
Yeah, that should be pretty easy to do. I imagine the core of any force (I imagine this as a pretty small scale game) is your custom leader dude, their retinue, and generic fighters and a lad wagon or two. 20 Astartes is a huge force, and 10 Custodes is straight over kill. Most armies are gonna be around 30-40 individual models max, not counting transports or war machines.
>>
>>85005898
agreed, best to keep it small to encourage lots of conversions and keep it practical. No one is buying a whole army for the sake of a TG homebrew
>>
>>85005840

>>85005430
>Canticle for Leibowitz faction
I think that the shtick of the faction should be that the more they lose the stronger they fight, morale for example should be reversed with full strenght units having to roll as if they were at breaking point meanwhile units with high losses should be fearless and having damage buffs.
Their troops would be massed infantry supported by elite "knights" that have genebulked muscles and carry autocannons (hellsing reference) and for HQs I'd imagine a generic priest(unarmed) whose ability is to not make your troops roll for morale when at full strenght.
To tie in with the novels the Order of Leibowitz in the books safeguards and tries to study pre-nuclear devastation tech while in wh29k the catherics could try to keep dangerous daot tech away from people like Cardinal Tang so when most of your troops are gone you can attempt to destroy a relic to avoid it falling into enemy hands but considering that most of the time they don't know what the relic in question is they might try to break what might very well be a nuclear weapon or some other thing that really shouldn't be messed with (which again is the reason they were safekeeping it in the first place).
To represent that the player pays for a relic from a list, more if they want to choose it less if they roll on the list at the moment when they break it.
The player may attempt to break a relic only after most of his army is gone and if they do they count as having lost victory points but if the enemy manages to capture it they lose even more.
Also here are some minis.
>>
>>85005986
I'll probably color it
The idea that I took is that in caucasus some mountain tribes would have this strange tradition where they would cut off primary/sword hands of fallen enemies from their rival tribe over the mountain, then they would proceed to nail said hands to their house as a trophy with the best warriors having walls covered in hands
In real life it might be folk tales of how it used to be in caucasus, but in 20k I see no reason why various tribes around the mountains of caucasus in the ethnarchy wouldn't assert their dominance in a similar way
>>
>>85006034
Right if the other people in here are chill with this, I'd be down to do a paragraph of fluff for each unit and a general blurb. This sounds a semi sorted faction?
>>
Proposed Army Composition

>Warlord
Custom hero, using an Anvil of Apotheosis/Necromunda stye approach. Leader of your forces. Comes with an Inq28 style retinue/honour guard.

>Commanders
Same as above, but lesser. Necromunda Champions logic

>Heroes
Special dudes that aren't your force leadership. Duelists, gunslingers, Big Dudes. In-between the faceless mooks and the specialized Your Dude Leadership

>Troops
Set in stone fighters, exclusive to each faction. Comparatively barebones, stock dudes that are both expendable and the backbone of your force. Units that distinguish themselves may gain experience and skills in a narrative game

>Cavalry
Most armies get one or two units of these, the hammers to troop anvils, objective grabbers

>Warmachines
Troop transports, tanks, giant monsters, artillery pieces, giant robots.

>>
>>85006260

>>
>>85006294
Maybe make that 25. 25 is the max for Necromunda, and it feels like a lot for basically being the same amount as a single 40k block of troops. But otherwise, sure, I think you have the right of it.

Otherwise I propose:

>Anvil of Apotheosis Warlord creation rules
>Necromunda gear and progression for everything that isn't just a bog standard dude
>Custom Vehicle rules (Necromunda book pdf scan when)
>Command Abilities (Stratagems can go straight to fucking hell)
>Subfaction rules
>No allying in forces
>Alternating activations, no phases
>No terrain rules, but instead weather/battlefield conditions
>>
>>85006135
It's pretty basic as is and some ideas for units , the relic list, better names for the units and lore would be nice, so far here is what I've got
>grav-field generator
>when broken flings units away from it and damages those that were close
>portable gellar field generator
>when broken hostile deamons and warp entities spawn at random and psykers have to roll for perils
>bomb
>pretty self explanatory
Unit-wise here is what I came up with.
>Riflemen(massed)
>A big untrained unit with low stats but good morale, carries stub rifles
>Riflemen(skirmishers)
>A small trained unit acting as snipers and scouts and generic harassers, carries scoped stub rifles
>Grenadiers
>A support unit equipped with grenades and syntetic muscles, can throw grenades further away than normal units and is pretty good in melee
>Papal knights
>A small and heavily customizable elite unit usually armed with heavy autocannons, krak grenades and carapace armour, veterans that come stock with a priest
>Priests
>A single model w/out weapons that can join squads to remove the need to roll for morale when at full strenght and can sing canticles each round to choose a different bonus.

I'd keep special weapons to a minimum(and focus on the more cheaply built ones) but other than that go wild.

An interesting period. If anything comes to mind, specially regarding Hy Brasil, I will post it.

Interesting that the Planalto hive cluster had an ice-covered reactor area and what I imagine is tensegrity-based architecture. The idea of hive spires sprouting from a sea of slums could be mixed with the Brazilian dystopia shown in "Tempos de Guerra".

Plus the use of green scales and reptilian helmets might suggest "caimans" to some, but in local folklore, the snake is much, much more important. There might be some untapped potential here.

>Jermani
screw it I'm gonna throw in some homebrew lore
>Located within the West Euro zone of Ancient Terra, the nation of Jermani has fractured into multiple feudal states loosely aligned with each other but ready to betray and breakaway at a moment's notice. From the states of Sektony to Bavara, Brauma, Berleg and many more. The feudalism is ruthlessly reinforced by military dictatorships evolved from martial law declared at the dawn of Old Night. When reality's sun finally set upon Terra.
Their most prized treasure is the "Rein-tower" once a tower that reached above Terra's atmosphere to ship docking yard, it has now become a heavily armored industrial thorn that juts out of the remains of an otherwise ruined city with cruel long ranged barrels poised to rain death upon those that dare come near Jermani's borders. The barbed tower's foundational sector is has been converted to a fortress that is surrounded by a favilla of civilian sheet metal homes as they huddle near it for the protection of it's guns. Said favilla is cruelly patrolled by armored vehicles crewed by madmen ready to slaughter the crowds at the squeeze of a trigger.

The Martians are surgical (by the settings standards) in and out elites, unflinching, mobile and with like a wahhabist level of religious zeal about tech.

You have a highly disorganised land full of hundreds of small petty kingdoms clans ans tribes inter connected by a common sense of religion culture and language. The 4 or 5 or so larger players hold sway over many petty Kings whose interests need to be balanced with plenty of diplomatic games going on. Then you have the highly contentious position of "high king" or whatever title you want. Their theoreticaly the head of this clusterfuck of tribes that would make the HRE blush but in reality tend to not exert much control beyond the High rulers own overkingdom. Then drawing in named characters loosely based on irish myth eg the dagda and his unlimited pot which never goes empty, clearly some warp fuckery. Or the giants being near ogryns or from old gene experiments. The fae/fairies could be eldar on the planet with webway portals which the Emperor may want to destroy. They steal children for reasons only known to them for example.

Again this is not 1000% what it must be, but form a good basis to further build out of. Sci fi built off of irish mythology and the Irish medieval period is practically non existent and I think it would be a nice experiment to build off of it here. Plenty of inspiration from the Irish myths but not carbon copies.

Gonna add a new land for you, OP: the Midterran Gorge.

>What is the Midterran Gorge and what rends it "special" ?

The Midterran Gorge, or as it was once known as the Mediterranean Sea, is a large, deep, highly salty waste located deep under Sardia (Sardinia Island) and essentialy functioning as a no men's land for Franc, the Nordafrik Conclaves, Spania amd the former west Ital, now reduced into a fuming horror of slave camps, brutal barbarians of tactical genious and quarelsome personality.

The Gorge is home to the Salt-Stalkers, tribalistic Techno-barbarians and convicts who serve the even more Barbaric but oppulents lords of Sardia in their petty wars with the rival Caht and Napul, or defend their tyrant against the cold, brutal raiders of the North, from the coasts of Ligaria to the steppes of Pimont, and even the rabbid warriors of Ven, all of them governed by the genetistical despots of Padia's Plain.

The Midterran Gorge, despite its toxic, salt filled geography, posses some reliques under its surface and layers of crusted salt and ashes.

>What is the technological level of the Gorge?

For the Gorge, merely scrapped stuff and nothing not too fancy, typical techno-barbarians.
Sardia, instead, is a powerhouse filled with important tech.

Pls ask me questions so I can elaborate on it.
>>
Further adding to the irish section, you could have a a faction hording information and technology from the DAOT all around the state, whose influence and patronage can make or break the prtty kings and even thr high king themselves. They would naturally come into conflict with any admech presence wanting to get their hands on it, perhaps the Eldar also want to steal the knowledge and store it at the black library, the kidnapped children being turned into perfect sleeper agents to help do so. Or so they think. Big E may also have a vested interested and sends infiltration agents all over the island posing as mercs while he's busy dealing with legit threats.

I think !Ireland should be Firmir. Horrible mutant rapists that predate on Albion

that's way more interesting than the worst case that I assumed (not! spacewolves).
The eldar is especially interesting and would be a good faction. Perhaps both fallen eldar and exodites as playable options.
I think that provided we didn't make it hyper explicit in all the naming conventions (like not having too much arthurian or gaelic) this is a cool faction. Sorry I assumed the worst lol.
Anyone got any ideas for this factions units

Oh ok.
Imma go full brainstorm over the Mediterranean and closeby seas around italy, so prepare.

So, I don't know if Emps began his Unifications War in Anatolia or Elsewhere, but if we take the former as his "humble" beginning, and then went West, Emps probably had to deal with the Midterran Enclaves.

The Enclaves were, despite their constant infights for petty territories and reasons lost to time, a faction composed of the Ionic Canyoners, Adriac Gulchers and Tyrian Cliffers.

As mentioned before, the two main islands, Sardia and Caht (I had no better name for Sicily, sorry, any help welcomed on a better name), were fortifications of great value, as they watched over the ionic and adriac regions, but were on precarious terms.

The Emperor found less hardenship in the North, as the Padianic Warlords found in him a worthy leader, and gave him permission to pass the Ionic in the same way Caesar passed the Rubicon.

The war was long, but in the end Sardia fell, but not before a great display of might, as its unique position (and having "eaten" Corsia helped cover more terrain) watching over the Midterran Gorge.

The Siege of Sardia is a lost tale, but it shows traits of what was later known, ironicaly, as the Siege of Terra, but with the opposite faction winning thanks to cohesion and union, as Sardia was, in a way, a weaker version and somewhat barbaric looking Imperial Palace meager reflection (tgis is not needed, but would add even more flavor and lols, probably).

1/2
>>
>>85012414

While infamous for their brutal ignorance and barbaric display of petty reasons for battling, the Midterran and the High Italiacs were well disciplined, industrious folks who greately helped in the initial phases of the Wars, showing an equal sense of formality, ingenious minds and discipline as a bloodboiling, passionate, scholary, festive nature.
It is speculated that a Legion of Thunder Warriors came from here, known for been obsessed over highly decorated armors and a strong discipline (for a TW standard, of corse), but all about them was mysteriously expunged from records in a similar fashion to the Lost [REDACTED].

Midterra today serve as a place where the burocracy of the Administratum is operated, as many of the long practices and documentations are done here, and in conjinction with the North, fused with Jermani, ooerate as a Mechanicus enclave.

Sardia is now home to the Aristocracy of Midterra, and the former Gorge serve as the Underhive, which is rinnomated for its arenas and a large number of syndicates operating here... most serving the Nobility.

This is good! I'll cover Merica!

Nord Merica once about 3 or more or less divided nations has shattered into 3 enclaves as daemonic incursions ripped it's unity apart from Candar to the long forgotten "fifty unities." The unity was fractured at the dawn of Old Night when daemonic incursions broke out throughout the middle areas and southern areas of Candar. The prime directors of the fifty unities despaired and launched cruel warheads that rained from the sky rendering much of the area a radioactive wasteland to contain the daemons. Unbeknownst to them some xenos species are immune or even thrive on the affects of nuclear warfare.

Middle Candar as some believe belongs to chaos techno barbarians marauders that war against each other for their gods. They wage an endless war for their gods amongst each other and against the xenos slavers of the south.

Enclaves of order still exist in Merica. From the heavily armored military dictatorship of Vancov and the southern enclaves of Mayaco and Flordna both of which have become hard pressed to maintain order as farms are moved into underground biolabs for faster vegetative growth and solar fields that provide precious electrical power in their place are defended by blade, bullet, and blood.

Yo, Merica sound pretty dope, good job !

I came up with an extra piece for Sardia: the Bridge of Corsia.

The Bridge of Corsia was the sole direct road to reach Sardia without trying to die while climbing on its heavely guarded walls.

The Bridge began from Gena, the capital of Liga (formerly Liguria), and passed over the Adriac Cliffs directly to Old Corsia, once territory of Franc and now returned to who Ital consider its real owner: itself.

While Sardia was a Fortress of might, the Bridge was a deathtrap for any invading force as terrible weapons of the age before the Fall and Old Night were kept there in almost pristine conditions, more than the rest of the two islands it connected.
The Emperor, in a record hid in theboldest portions of the Vault, detailed how hard was for his forces to take even a quarter of it, and it was thanks to the Midterran Wasters, who took down defences by infiltrating in Sardia and perishing in the thousand, that the defences fell.
(Yes, the Mechanicus has scoured the area for any relic over and over again after the events of the UW).

The Fall of Sardia was brutal: no survivors but one boy were left, and he ended up becoming part of the Custodes (pic related: my interpretation of a MK.1 Custodes, sadly I lost it before finishing it)

Thanks m8! You keep working at that. I like where it is going!

Anyways onto Sola-Astraya (Aussie-land) And yes this is Mad Max inspired.

In the sand scorched land of Astraya civilization fled the coastlines as a smaller techno barbarian tribe bolstered by swift armored mobile transports blitzkrieg'd the coastal cities and soon turned them into bases of operation and vehicular production via captured slaves.
The vehicles in particular are powered by potent solar panels that can hastily recharge the internal batteries of the armored chariots they rely on so much by only the light of the scorching sun.

The only response by the Terran humans was to upgrade the vehicles that allowed them to swiftly flee the coastlines into inner Astraya. Now "Sand Armadas" of powerful armored vehicles roam the Astraya sandlands intent on looting and salvaging the wreckage of fallen vehicles.
The Fortress city enclave built upon Mount Uluru launches daring sanctioned raiders to hunt the sand armadas of the techno barbarians to kill them and take their vehicles and supplies and extract the moisture from their bodies for decontamination into drinking water.
A unique aspect of Astraya warfare is that it is mostly fought on armored vehicles sometimes deemed "chariots" and ballistic weapons are far less common than power pack charged lasgun weaponry.

A xenos species that mastered cloaking technology artificially "provides" the occasional oasis to allow for cloaked drones to transmit visuals of the fighting between the Uluru enclave and techno barbarians over the drinking water. A theatrical arena is what Astraya has become to this xenos species (feel free to homebrew who/what these xenos are).
As far as most are concerned the oasis popping up by xenos is but a hushed rumor often dismissed as reality is in flux on Terra.

The most hotly contested area besides the Uluru enclave fortress are the Flenderlunds (Flinders Ranges).
This particular area is known for it's mountainous regions ripe for fortress building and the Uluru enclave can never allow the techno barbarians to seize such a prize.
The areas sometimes been referred to as "The Flender kill zone" due to the death and armorcide that occurs as more fresh meat and metal are sent to the area the prospect of salvaging becomes more alluring which results in even more incursions into the Flenderlund mountain ranges.

Most of the recruits for such operations are the dregs of the favelas that spring up around the Uluru enclave. Often the prospect of potentially being granted a tiny place to live on top or inside the armored mountain is a gamble worth taking, and many are only too happy to bet their lives on it.
Few are permitted to take the operations as many must first serve in Uluru armada units that patrol the areas for techno barbarians and the mutated deadly wildlife of Sola Astraya.

That is interesting. You know, the cybernetic biomes (archgroves?) could be used as part of a computer, deriving calculations and data storage through the non-intuitive processes of evolution, DNA transfer and interaction of organisms. Ant-like servitors could cross the ever-changing pheromonal trackways connecting the domes, updating each one with new algorithms and potential solutions for problems yet to come.

The flora could absorb metals and other elements through vast and deep roots which become architectural foundations, and the domes themselves are the hardened exteriors of their fused canopies. The mycorrhizal network could include circuits and emit so many radio frequencies it jams everything else. The common Hy-Brazil warrior could charge his laslock with fruit-batteries, and the "shamans" are the ones brave and mad enough to survive a neural link to the archgroves' noosphere.

Shall we call the areas of the Pan Pacific Empire before they became one empire "Sector Pacifica?"

For some Nippon is the last bastion of the Men of Iron machines that ravaged the human race, and for others the island is an armored fortress run by a tyrant that has turned it into a thorough police state.

Corpses reanimated to become cybernetic combat servitors and "sanctioned" men of iron are a common sight on the "Island of Iron." And like many of the old Terran nations has devolved into a feudalistic state. These servitors being dead soldiers, civilians and victims of collateral damage along with sanctioned Iron Men bolster the standing armies Nippon for they are a necessary in defending the southernmost enclave of mainland Nippon.

It's northernmost mountainous regions.
There Techno Barbarians known as Ronin roam the mountains fighting each other for their corrupt gods and occasionally leading expeditions into areas of Nippon just south of the mountains. The sheer barbarity of the Ronins and their chaos Shoguns along with fortresses constructed into and around the mountains acts as a deterrence against foreign invaders and other legions of chaos Ronins in the Northern Nippon mountain ranges.

The warlord kingdoms of the Zone Gua (China look up how to say China in Chinese) watch with fear and anticipation. Preparing to invade and bracing for invasion from Nippon. For if the southern Enclaves of Nippon fall to to the northern mountain Techno Ronin Barbarians then the Island of Iron will become a springboard for many chaos incursions in all directions from that island.

Okay, got a few ideas while doing the dishes.

1 - The archgroves (not satisfied with this name myself) descend from forest reserves managed by autonomous fogs of nanos during the Dark Age. They were originally meant to preserve their assigned biomes, survey them and acquire samples of any new mutation or organic compound that might have useful applications. As Terra collapsed, the system optimized the biomes to survive the hellish environment.

The end result is like if Adrian Thompson was allowed to run his experiment, but using untold trillion of components during a trillion cycles. For example, the "domes" came to be before the archgroves started sharing data, convergent evolution after a particularly nasty shower of orbital debris.

Ive actually been working on a project like this for afew years now, had to scrap a good portion thanks to the New HH edition and rebalancing. I'll post more later when ive finished, but generally the best way to do the "technobarbarian factions" like amerik, ursh, etc. Is by having a single shared army list and weapon list that is modified by the faction. Removing and adding new units and weapons that are flavourful to the faction in question.

2 - This idea might be independent of any faction, or perhaps a faction of its own. It's meant to justify a skirmish among all factions, at any time, at any place.

I'm considering that Terra has a chronic case of Kessler Syndrome, untold megatonnes of debris colliding in orbit, in all sizes, shapes and levels of technology. Some of it falls to the surface. While a flake of paint would quickly vaporize in the atmosphere, a chunk of diamonoid or a shard of magmatter could create a sizable crater or even pierce the crust and generate an earthquake/volcanic eruption.

This would result in a revival of astrologers/astronomers. They don't have a concrete understanding of what they are watching, but everybody understands that the specks of light in the sky may fall and bring great destruction. The positive side of this is that, say, the engine block of a Sagan-class scout frigate can contain enough plasma to restart the decaying reactor at the spire's core. Besides all sorts of salvage and archaotech.

So people are always fearing that the sky may fall on their heads, but also hopeful of the magic hoards within these disasters. Great fortunes and warbands are made and unmade each time the portents match the cyphers processed by the oracle's scanners.
>>
>>85017692
I think this is based. I like the name Thinking Forest? Sounds very science fantasy

>>85017871
3 - How one could become of the "Ouranti Draks" or whatever their name was in this age.

You have to let yourself be swallowed by the Thinking Forests. Twice.

The first time, you freely enter one of the domes. Then you survive. Adapt and evolve. You go on until you become part of the ecology. This is the first swallowing.

Eventually, you will wake up in the middle of the night, due to a particularly aggressive wind bringing dry pollen and a smell of garlic, which could be coincidence if you weren't inside one of the Thinking Forests (agreeing with >>85017908's suggestion). You will see a bright serpentine shape crawling towards you, from below a mound of rotten cable-branches, or surfacing from inside the pools of coolant hidden by the radars dishes of the aqua-lilies. The "Boitata" comes close and coils around you. You must remain calm and accept the judgement of the Forest. It will constrict as its "scales" remold themselves into your new second skin, and its head reshapes around yours. This is the second Swallowing.

Once the process is complete, you will have become an agent of the Forests, a set of eyes and fingers that can go beyond the domes. Your understanding of it all is subjective and imprinted in your reptilian instincts, but what happened was a symbiotic bond with a optical phased array. Each "scale" is a complex crystalline green optical computer, part of a composite eye covering your body. Besides not being afraid of what lies behind you anymore, you can now discharge las-bursts capable of intercepting projectiles or snipe a foe.

Your weapon, the "Ibir", might seem like a simple two-handed club, but the bark contains many composite ceramics and the wood grain is laced with metallic alloys. It is hard and resilient to damage, and can absorb part of the energies unleashed by the enemy blows you parry.

Good.

While on Terra the Unification Wars raged, from space the last remnants of the DAoT kept doing their business.
While the Men of Iron scoured humanity like a curse from god, a few managed to remain untouched, or even create alliances with the AI, evolving as an independistic faction and sending every here and then some "scouts" to observe the situation of distant worlds and their own homes as well.

Thanks to their advanced levels, they posses great weapons and means to obliterate enemies (but on crunch will cost a fuckton of points due to their weapons be esoteric and advanced. Very advanced).
However, what is particular in them is their absolute reverence for reason and science, and their constant evolution of it, in a true way some big Hereteks to the eyes of the Mechanicum, as they INVENT new gear.

Their suits, as an example, can be described as "proto-eldari level", as they are biomechanical and can literaly grow like a second skin, even mutate on the user's will.

>Not against it, but how do we differentiate from the Terrawatt clan?
Martians play like Dark Eldar, weak at the start of the game but getting stronger the more they succeed and focusing on hit-and-fade attacks with the goal of theft rather than occupying territory. First level Martians probably don't even have cybernetics yet, just spacesuits with power-assisted exoskeletons to make up for microgravity bone and musculature loss growing up in lower Martian gravity and months of microgravity aboard the Aldrin Cycler between Mars and Terra.
>Eventually one of them will break into the tomb of an ancient technocrat-king and in a moment that'll inspire a holy symbol which the mechanicus will spread across the galaxy for generations to come, discover the mummy has a half-metal skull and PROOF that it's possible for flawed mankind to become blessed machines.

>nightmare horrors of the Ghourmant clans of the deep sinks of Detra-Merica, whose terrible strength and longevity were bought only at the price of a far more indiscriminate and insatiable hunger
Ogre Kingdom expies? A flawed attempt at genetically enhanced supermen who got superior strength, durability, intelligence, lifespan, etc, but at the cost of a hyperactive metabolism which is always hungry. The more they eat, the bigger, stronger and smarter they get, so their society is neofeudal with the nobility keeping the peasants deliberately underfed so they can hoard food for themselves and the peasantry remains comparatively weaker and therefore less likely to revolt.

>(p.8 of the Adeptus Custodes codex).
"The vast empire of Humanity was shattered amidst horror and anarchy, and the oppressive shroud of Old Night settled over all.

At the heart of this galactic disaster lay Terra, transformed from a glittering jewel to an apocalyptic hellscape by forbidden weapons and biological atrocities. Yet though it's people fell into darkness and ignorance, many of the technologies that had led them to ruin survived, sealed away in hidden bunkers and biomantic crypts. Sure enough as Humanity clawed it's way back from the brink beneath the lashes of cruel warlords, so these self-appointed rulers discovered the weapons of old and tried once again to turn them upon one another. Terra faced the threat of a second apocalypse as gene-bred barbarians and ghastly flesh-stitched ghouls made war at the behest of madmen, fanatics and techno-cannabilistic murderers.

Much of this lore is lost forever, destroyed or buried in the endless archives of Terra. Yet a few still know that this was the environment the Emperor rose to prominence, and that he - whether living deity or apex superhuman - was a worthy inheritor to the trove of genetomantic lore left behind by Mankind's former rulers. It was this ancient and dangerous bounty, coupled with his own incredible and unfathomable powers, that allowed the Emperor to fashion warriors with which to unite the world."

>Though I am assuming the Orioc of Antarctica would have "sealed" suits especially designed for dealing with the winters.
Perhaps a dumb question, but considering that the oceans are gone, does Antarctica still has ice? Because if it has, that might be the best source of good water in the whole planet. Even if the exterior is tainted by radiation, toxic waste and who knows what else, they could extract ice from the lower layers. That would make the Antarcticans possibly rich, and constantly targeted by raiding parties.

Ehhh, I think 40K Mechanicus should be drawn from very lightly and selectively as opposed to 30K Mechanicum and even new made up shit, but that's because I'm not into the whole DaVinci Steampunk Baymax look.

There's scope to add some interesting new stuff to a pre-Unity Mechanicum, but fundamentally they're already well into their cogs & robes phase. There's the Brotherhood of Singularitarianism as well in terms of Terran machine-weirdos, they might make for an interesting faction to "hide" some Men of Iron remnants in? In fact, that would make a good background for why they were eventually wiped out and their leader(Moravec, of the forbidden vaults full of evil and crazy fame) fled to Mars - it was discovered they were harbouring AI.
>>
>>85029482

>>
>>85020003
That's a nice way to look at it but I think that the "ghour" and power at the expense of hunger, plus the "deep sinks", means that this is based off Lovecraft's ghouls.

Mind you, this doesn't means that they can't become giants as they eat. As you said, the nobility gorge themselves, so they are the "greater ghourmants" while the majority remain as skeletal pot-bellied thralls, gnawing at bones. Plus, I think that Delta Green details the existence of older, bigger, fatter ghouls.

Hmm, this makes me think of the Windigos and Cheenos of North American folklore. There is also the Whittico, which I never understood if it was a distinct creature or the spirit which turns cannibals into windigos.

The original Arabic ghouls were associated with sickness, from "heartache" all the way to spreading plagues in cities to feast on the dead. Possible Nurgle influence?

So I'm considering something like a warp-tainted prion gained from consuming ghourmant meat makes you a ghourmant, which have pits of human cattle, an aristocracy of giant fat elders which are like WH Ogres, plus a couple details from Windigos and Cheenos. I can detail the latter two here if you anons want, as most internet info is incomplete or missing.

The Nerland Collectives are a culture descended from underwater cities that were forced to surface when Terra's oceans disappeared, as well as the survivors of floating cities in the middle of the North Sea.

Spared much of the initial nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons deployed early in the Age of Strife, the population is mostly genetically stable, although there is a divide between those descended from the domed cities and the floating cities, with the latter forming a warrior elite and the former an industrial one.

The Collectives jealously guard the lakes that are the remnants of the North Sea, and the arable land around them. Their land crawlers rush across the salt plains to any discovered water deposits, mercilessly claiming them for themselves.

Ehhh, honestly I can't see it. Pre-Strife Mars was a terraformed techno-utopia so they'd have the same aesthetic/tech base as the rest of pre-Strife humanity, and the story of Mars during Strife is such that nobody from there was active anywhere else until after they'd already become the Mechanicum almost as we know them in 30K.

You have to remember that Mars was a worse hellscape than Terra during Strife - the surface was ruled by possibly-Chaotic cybercannibals and infested with nanophages, rad storms, biotech horrors, rampant AI constructs, not to mention they'd have to be experiencing a level of impact events thanks to debris falling out of orbit that Mars hadn't seen since the Noachian. The survivors retreated into sealed bunkers, barely scraping by, their desperate attempts to remember how to keep the tech that was keeping them alive running gradually morphing into the rote dogma of religion, and they didn't really come out again until they had servitors and cyber-soldiers and Titans to scour the surface and make it safe to live on again. It was only then they started looking beyond Mars, raiding Terra and the outer worlds, and eventually constructing fleets to set out and look for lost Golden Age colonies.

That said, if we moved away from the hard sci-fi aspect a bit and used the NASA angle more as anachronistic inspiration it could work - crude chemical rocket ships would fit, they'd just have to be a bit more raygun-gothic than K.S. Robinson, and there's even art-precedent for spacesuit style Explorators. You just can't really escape the whole cybernetics and cogs and robes thing because that's already who the Mechanicum were by the time they started raiding earth.

It's probably a stupid question, but I will anyway: Did people stay in their gang or warband, or go out on their own? For whatever reason, be it bounty hunting, revenge or scavaging tek and killing beasts?

Something like that yes. Perhaps also some kind of debuffer causing disease in the enemies, some medium unit which got a bit more than scraps from the lords in exchange for loyalty, and whatever conversions can be made from Ogryns and Ogres, like wasteland beasts.

I figure the faction dynamic would be sorta, the faster you are, the weaker. Thrall hordes are a meal away from dying, utterly desperate. The giant lords have power, full guts, heavy equipment and are in no rush for getting the first bite.

>>85030638
There are entire hives in Terra. Full faction uniforms seems difficult but some "regiments"/militias/yourdudes with good standardization seems doable.

>>85030857
Should this be specific to a particular period within the Age of Strife? If yes, I agree with around M28-29.

>>85030775
>>85030857
>>85031239
Although not fitting to Mechanicus, this concept could fit some sort of scavenger space nomads, people too weak to stay in one place for long, but always moving around the solar system. The Age of Strife equivalent of Southeast Asia sea nomads/polynesians.

>>85031369
Ursh. Siberia would provide a lot of arable soil after the permafrost is gone. Would help explain why Ursh was strong, it could feed most of its people and have greater-than-average armies. Conscript soldiers could even have ale rations. A full belly makes you more disposed towards being forcibly puppetered and "enhanced" by the psykers. The protein is still going to be bricks of cricket flour though.

>>85032117
Could be an oasis turned into a fortified citadel tapping aquifers, sorta like 40K Garamantes. These are times when a handful of actual healthy oranges could be a diplomatic gift or valuable tribute.
>>
>>85032537
I'm sure lone scavengers fits the vibe, so do anchorites, wandering madmen, menidcant philosophers, exiled tribespeople etc
perhaps it's part of tribal iniations to bring back tech

We could probably have Freebootaz and stuff like that, just ladz come to poke about the place
>>
>>85032537
Both.

Belonging to a group brings a measure of safety, stability and personal bonds. Being exiled must be the a death sentence in most of Terra, sometimes amounting to being dumped into the garbage-chute from the bunker, straight into the radzone.

But the Age of Strife is a time of instability, violence, greed and desperation. There might a group of people being decimated by something beyond their control every week, every day. Even quiet communities lost people to raiders, press-ganging, or something that they couldn't understand or see.

So it depends on the individual to decide if he, she, it(?) decides that their group satisfies their needs and wants. Even a petty but Human reason, like teenage rebellion can suffice.

That's the type of situation, a system failure away from decompression, that makes people wanting reliable tech, not high-tech. They could loathe even electronics, using an "Antikythera" of plastics and gold, plus a couple telescopes, for astrogation.

Just read this is not a test: there's rules for rad storms, etc.
we may not need Necromunda Ash Wastes rules porting over at all. We could just homebrew a few extra environmental threats. This saves the hassle of re statting effects from one system to another.
TINAT also is like a 15 models a side setting, it would be hard to play on a significantly larger scale. So warbands are going to have to be very small scale.
The setting also has some harsh penalties for psychic powers going awry - we may not need to make a custom table for pysker failure

To be completely honest OP's idea is that this is set way before the arrival of the Emperor's Thunder Warriors. I think we can get away with some creative liberties but throw some hints of divisions. Maybe the not!GB factions can all be Britonnicans but with crumbs of lore bits that they will fracture at any given point.

Some writefaggotry that could take place at any point before Emps took over Terra

Gotchburg, a once marvel of a city now clings to the margins of it's former glory. At the eve of Old Night the leaders of the city foresaw the dwindling offworld supplies and the horrors that would befall Terra. By the use of anti-grav plates scavenged from now useless ground to orbit cargo haulers they built a makeshift city sized hovering device that pulled the city from the ground to hoist it into air. They drifted away from their place of origin in the Nordycs all the way over to the Atlan Wastes where they began to scavenge and horde resources. But this once thriving city wouldn't last long into the old night as raiders and internal factions slowly began to grind Gotchburg into ruin.
The deathknell came when the city could no longer maintain it's altitude and it began to drift off towards the South Pacific rad wastes where it eventually crashed.
The survivors of the crash began to slowly make a meager living from the ruins where they collected water from the sparse rains that came, and used the few hydroponic greenhouses left to feed themselves.
Romour has it that the city of Gotchburg still cling to life, holding off raiders from the Pan-Pacific Empire and doing the occasional trading with the Maglev Clans in a futile attempt to try and make their city fly again.

Just something I wrote on the spot about one of possibly thousands of settlements/factions that came and went during the Age of Strife on Terra.

Remembered an idea I once had for "laser woad": https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/80772890/#q80776414

>Visually, it might look like a complex decorative tattoo made of blue glitter, which are actually billions of nanolenses laid over your skin. This is a phased optical array, which can both be used to provide optical camouflage and as a laser emitter. The extra computing power inside the hollows of your bones uses it to intercept projectiles of several types, point the directions of enemies and objectives it notices. The fact that the system is spread through your skin, acts as camo and active defense leads to the tribes being naked in battle.

>To the technobarbarian, it is very much a totem spirit which aids you in battle. The sacrifices it requires from slain enemies are certain spare parts from their implants. The laser woad also has a measure of self-modification, which it uses to imprint itself upon your descendants during pregnancy.

>>85038111
Seems perfect actually.

>>85038276
Agreed.

>>85038779
I had considered a not!Magonia using a combination of anti-grav plates and balloons, with dew nets and hanging gardens of vines, but it would still be floating. And it would look somewhat like pic related.

Robinson, and there's even art-precedent for spacesuit style Explorators. You just can't really escape the whole cybernetics and cogs and robes thing because that's already who the Mechanicum were by the time they started raiding earth.
Give this red robes and graft the pilot into their armor and you've got a Mechanicum heavy unit.

>>
>>85044580
More or less, except it detaches the lower half of itself to launch the upper back into orbit. Drop Pods are expected to have their contents win and establish a beachhead for them to be retrieved and brought back to their parent ship aboard an intermediary SSTO, these things don't have that luxury. Dark Eldar ships might be a better parallel if they were after toasters rather than bdsm slaves

Necron nobleman LARPing as Indiana Jones, with a collection of “artifacts” including abducted and stasis-frozen victims posed in dioramas. Going with Hammer & Bolter, he’s got a Thunder Warrior, so apparently he or at least his agents visited Terra during the Age Of Strife and successfully kidnapped one of the Emperor’s soldiers from under his nose.

Have you been watching The Martian a lot recently or something? It's 30,000 years in the future and even in an age of barbarism and regression genetic engineering, laserguns, and Wunderwaffen-tier crazed superscience are everywhere, your idea to import near-future hypergrounded NASA sci-fi into it is dumb and at this point just trolling. Either take on board the multiple sincere attempts to reframe your idiocy to work in the context of the IP and contribute properly or bugger off.

Combine these two and have an enormous luxury liner roaming the skies on autopilot with the skeletal remains of passengers still lying where they fell centuries ago and mechanical stewardesses deterring anyone who attempts to board without paying, much less make off with the archaotech treasures.
