Nessos Lore Dump
>The city states in the south western island cluster are home to many philosophers, who in turn are responsible for their many different styles of government. Despite their differences and constant skirmishes, these independent states will often unite to fight off any outside influences.
>The islands are collectively called Nessos. People from there are called Nessans.
>The collection of islands is a great place for thinkers and merchants. Anyone sailing from the outer edges of the southern and western continents are going to be passing through that area. It'll see a lot of exotic ideas and goods passing through its cities.
>The Nessans are humans with darker complexions (olive, tan, light brown) but very light hair colors. The ideal, archetypal Nessan is a toned man with bronzed skin, silver hair and gold eyes.

A formerly isolationist country - Gruunwaeldt is a colony that centuries ago fought an war of independence against an now unknown overlord and then turned inward trying to establish an self reliant country in balance with nature, but since they started waging war with their neighbors they have begun burning all but their sacred trees down. The location is, if possible, around the central southern islands southernmost peninsula and a stretch of coastline east of it.

Forgot one.
>That said, they would definitely have a relationship with that Empire. Rather than being a breakaway I think they'd be better off as a hold out. Every time the Empire tried to take the islands the Nessans set aside their petty squabbles and united to throw them back.
>Some of those wars would have swung more in the Empires favor, obviously, but as it collapsed it lost whatever territory it had previously managed to seize.

Gods and Magic Lore Dump
>Only the seventh son of a seventh son can do magic naturally. Other magic users are either people who sold their soul to a demon (black magic, necromancers, witches and so on) or some sort of deitiy. Magic is therefore considered inherently evil by most nations.
>Gods dwell in the depths of the Inner Ocean, the area of water in the middle of those islands. Demons dwell in the depths of the Outer Ocean, the waters outside that circle of islands. Black magicians mentioned by >>85566511 # seek power by sailing into the Outer Ocean and offering human sacrifices there.
>The cities on the coasts facing the inner sea are righteous and proper, for they are close to the gods.
>Those on the outer coast's are strange. Still civilised, to a degree, but the people there sometimes worship things from the outer oceans. Godlessness is a serious issue.
>The gods are said to live on an island in that sea (an aquatic version of Olympus). Where it is and if it is always in the same place is unknown.
>Legend has it that if you see an island paradise through dawns early mist you mustn't try to approach it. The gods, though sometimes helpful or even friendly to mortals, do not take trespassers lightly.
>Black magicians and others seeking divine audience will drop anchor and wait at such a rare sighting. They will wait and wait and wait until a gull lands on the highest point of their ship to receive their message and carry their request towards land. Only when it returns with an invitation is it safe to approach. But one must bring many gifts and sacrifices, the gods are gods, after all. They are not easily impressed.

The Great Settlement Cont:
Accustomed to easy pickings and victories won from harassment and deception rather than skill, the orcs and their chief paled when faced with the wrath of vengeful chevaliers. Even with his company far outnumbered, it was as if Francesco had become a ravenous lion with the force he fought with. Every gallant knight that was felled this day is said to have slain at least fifty orcs, and routed twice the amount. Francesco himself fought until the end, and it is said that a black magic was what did him in, for the orcs were too cowardly to face the mailed menace in close quarters. It is also said that since that day, no orc inhabits the mountains above Unqueré, fleeing to greener pastures above. Still, while a chivalric tale of no equal, this tale is by its nature mythical, and whatever happened that day, it is known that Visconde Pedrones had the clergy declare Francesco a saint (his symbolic animal is, incidentally, a lion), and laid claim to all lands beyond the walled cities. He declared to all lords and men of honor that the orc menace was weak, and could no longer trouble the people of Gran Canbrea (the first use of this term in an official proclamation). A declaration of Cruzade (crusade) against the orc was made in the spirit of Francesco and his fearlessness, marking the start of the Settlement Period. This was the golden age of chevaliers and chivalry, as a pristine land was protected from the abuses and dark magics of orcs (many of whom had adapted the faith of the seemingly unstoppable Canbreans, finding themselves a place in chivalric literature), as rewarding as it was harsh and merciless. Many tales were told in this time, with men as chivalric as Francesco coming from it, doing gallant deeds and interacting with all manners of magics and mysteries. Truly, times like those could be found nowhere else.

reposting/editing Remnant Lore (1/2)

The Remnant. Officially known as the Agoran Imperial Remnant, is a nation that considers itself the direct continuation of the once united human empire. After many disastrous campaigns against the Nessans and further fragmentation of the Empire in the mainland, a son of one of the emperor’s many wives and his general established a colony on the eastern side of Agoras. Centuries later, the colony began to thrive after establishing trade with other nations through its main export: adamantine ore. The Remnant’s western borders are protected by a tall, expansive wall known as Kareon’s Wall. Idorea is the small, easternmost island is known for the famous yearly Squid-Fest, to celebrate the local fishermen's efforts. Piracy is a great problem to the Agorans, but their waters are defended by the Remnant Navy, who prove to be more than a match for most Ortugan pirate fleets. Tyrona is the capital city of the Remnant, directly west of Idorea.

Tensions have cooled in the past several centuries between Nessos and the Imperial Remnant. The cities in the south have long found the Remnant to be valuable trading partners and occasional allies when dealing with Ortugan pirates. Though many Nessan states in the north would never deal with 'Imperial Dogs', they're more than happy to buy Agoras' exports from their fellow Nessans for domestic use or for further export to the Inner Sea.

Agoras Island. Informally known as “The Green Hell” by ancient Nessans for its wild natives, ferocious beasts, and treacherous flora. The island’s terrain itself is largely endless jungle and steep mountains. The Agoran Wyvern, native to the island, preys on large bovines and the rare unfortunate adventurer. Though the island is dangerous, its mountains hide rich stores of adamantine, whose veins replenish in approximately 200-250 years. The Remnant was quick to capitalize on this discovery, using it to financially bolster their nation. Strangely, ruins of an even older civilization are scattered deep all over Agoras.

The Great Settlement Cont:
Beyond its romantic perception, historically this era has resulted in the modern political situation (and problems) that make up the country today. The population boomed in these times, with man having turned the tables of nature and ventured north to the rich riverlands and coasts that could be found in Gran Cambrea. Former chevaliers and lords in the walled cities went north, abandoning the old coastal centers and making grand estates within their reclaimed lands, to establish a bastion of the faith against frontier savagery so much as it was to send a message and outcompete rivals. Under the Cruzade of Pedrones, the spirit of unity lasted up until his death, with his sons dividing up the "unified holdings Gran Canbrea" that had been shared by all nobles into more lasting borders, giving themselves substantial kingdoms. This marked the end of the Cruzade, having pacified the north up to Vailbourg, with the chivalry of those golden decades grinding to a halt. There were four successor states, and they warred with each other ceaselessly, with the veterans of campaigns becoming vassals to these foolish boys (for their prestigious blood had not matured their crude minds) and fighting amongst each other for lasting glory and land. The "Edad de Odio" (age of hatred) passed through the generations, breaking apart the hard-earned lands of Cambreans into scattered fiefdoms as new rulers came to the throne of each kingdom (which had been reduced to dukedoms to appease the increasingly-autonomous vassals). This period did not occur in a vacuum, as it marked the opening up of Cambrea (what little of the identity remained) to the civilized world.

Warring states to the centralized state:
A squadron of enchanted triremes of Nessos, with their angelic eyes gazing through the mists, had spotted distant lands on an expedition. The Nessans proved fine negotiators, making landfall in the Bahía del Sol (later the Baie du Soleil), and announcing their peaceful intentions not through words, but through showing their wares to the disturbed locals. They were led to Vailbourg, a rapidly growing port in the north, and were faced with the attention of the court of Amboise (the ruling house of this territory, and later all Cambrea). The Nessans, led by Návarchos Kleítarchos simply maintained what they had established previously, they were here to trade with fellow men, and heaped gifts upon the duke in hopes of an agreement. Impressed by Nessan olive oil, mirrors, artillery (assembled upon purchase), and most importantly for the future, language, the Cambreans agreed to further talks. After the translators finally came to understand what both parties were telling each other, a trade agreement was made, with the regent (for the duke was still too young) offering to trade wine from the fields, gold from the mountains, weaponry, and mail armor, for it was ancient Cambreans who first engineered such armor. Beyond the obvious ramifications of Cambrean states opening up to trade, this act added several unplanned factors to politics. Notably, this caused the duchy of Amboise to possess a notable advantage over its larger southern neighbors with the unknown element it possessed, and the indignity of not having first met the foreigners ruffled the crowned heads of the south. Still, the bloody business of the age of hatred carried on, though not without an unforeseen consequence of the Nessan entrance.

Somewhere in the eastern reaches resides the Kentavros tribe, a band of horse-riders with a somewhat unusual lifestyle. Almost every individual is accompanied by their own horse, having been paired with said horse from a very early age. These horses have been bred for their lifespan so that the rider and horse will be able to grow old together. Over time, the two become acclimated to each other, and when the rider reaches 12 years of age, they choose a name for their horse, and from then on, the two are regarded as a single being, both legally and spiritually, with the horse being an extension of the rider’s body.
A common pastime is racing in an obstacle course with obstacles that require actions from both rider and horse at different points, and sometimes at the same time.
This oneness is further reflected in naming. The rider and horse legally share a full name that typically follows the format of Rider Name, Horse Name, Family Name.
A rider is rarely dismounted in public, which helps reinforce their image. On formal occasions, riders will often wear clothing that hides where the rider ends and the horse begins, sometimes with the rider wearing garments patterned after their horse’s hide.
Kentavros people tend to keep to themselves and are generally not hostile to other people unless provoked.

Warring states to the centralized state Cont:
For years now, the northern fiefs of Gran Cambrea had become just as developed and civilized as the original, having even subdued and accepted the orcs to a very limited extent. With the arrival of the Nessans, a link to a foreign land had changed the nature of life in Vailbourg and greater Amboise. A new school of thought had become popular, encouraging the nobility to take in these foreign ideas and make them their own. As it would happen, this idea of Cambreanization would appear in a rather drastic form, with the announcement by the now-matured Duke Enrique (later Henri Ier) of a "Canbrean" language as a tongue distinct from what had matured to become the various dialects of Cambrean. In order to distinguish north from south, the duke had sought to artificially create the greatest distinction of all within an otherwise similar people - their language, creating a code marking the rules and regulations of this new language. With his opponents baffled, this "Codex Royal" allowed the incorporation of several loan words and traditions from the Nessan language. While it would take years for the language to actually mature into a living form, the damage had been done, and now two tongues reigned in Cambrea, with two now-distinct larger cultures to go along with it. The central, mountainous duchy of Callois also soon adopted Canbrean as their language, practically being forced into it by the Amboise. That proud, alpine realm that had been the home of many great chevaliers had fallen from grace at the time, being stripped of its west coast in a war with Amboise, and its northern rival had taken advantage of the many geographic and cultural divisions the passing Poméran mountains caused within its vassals, causing internal dissent.

Also, I drew on the old internal map to draw the four duchies, with the result looking horrible.

Warring states to the centralized state Cont:
Pursuing a policy of divide and conquer, the imperial ambitions of the house of Amboise saw the Callois dukes lose control of their own court, with their northern "friends" offering their aid to appease the vassals, if an alliance would be signed. The duchy of Callois thus entered a personal union with the Amboise in the junior position, a deed that would lose them much of their autonomy, essentially becoming the first colony of the burgeoning Amboise "empire". Cambrean historians have often wondered when the idea of a Gran Cambrea came back into the minds of nobility, and how such a thing could have even occurred if nationalism still had technically not been codified, but the signing of the "Acts of Union" which unified the northern duchies is commonly agreed to be the point where things started going out of control. The two southern duchies of Comete and Liaño had long feared their rapidly-growing sisters in the north, and with this unification, not to mention the artificial language divide, what tentative balance of power the warring states had set up was utterly broken. A simple incident with a Callois-affiliated merchant captured by a Comete vassal was enough to incite a declaration of war by both duchies with the goal of containing the imperialistic ambitions of the Union of Amboise and Callois. This war would come to be known as the Ten Years War, and it would mark the bloodiest point in Cambrean history, at least until the current day.

I got a simplified map of what the trade routes might look like, but I do have a few questions.
>>
Firstly, why doesn't Nessos have colonies on the mainland of the western and southern continents?
>>
>>85575791
Regarding the Imperial remnant, I'm vaguely aware of the idea that they are on the southern continent, but existing lore has said that they're pretty weak.
>>
>>85575664
It's not guaranteed that the seventh son of a seventh son will have magic, is it?
>>
>>85575791
1.) The previous version of "Loria" had three fragmented empires north of it, which it was at war with. Nessos was frequently attacked and/or subjugated by these mainlanders.
2.) I don't think it was ever thought up.

My headcanon is for now that the former Empire beat them to the punch or they themselves have been pushed off the continents by natives when attempting colonization. Doesn't help that they are loose confederation of city states and may have poor logistics/coordination.

>>85575861
Manpower-wise, the Remnant are a shadow of their forebears as they cover so little territory opposed to the contemporary major powers. Maybe alliances and being a major world supplier of precious metals help prevent any invasions from happening. Their military probably uses Adamantine weaponry/armor as well.

The Ten Years War:
In heavily summarized terms, the war began with initial Amboise-Callois losses at the battles of la Frontera and Ourense. Due to heavy use of longbows and magical wards by the southern allies, the classical northern chevalier tactics of charging with a couched lance on oversized horses were unable to come to fruition, with many heroic knights being crudely slain before their time. Despite the pedestrian origins of the chevalier, horseback riding was a tradition developed from the vast plains of the north promoting horses as the ideal means of travel, and those battles marked the decline of the cavalry tradition in Cambrean warfare, with cavalry being relegated from queen of the battlefield to a useful form of regiment. Such was the shock in the Canbrean psyche, that those battles were said to be the death of chivalry, with chevaiers losing face in court and being reduced to a simple noble title, without any of the majesty that once came with them. The loss of Canbrean morale pleased the Cambrean-speaking allies, and a counterattack was attempted into the mountains led by the White Prince, a Grandee of Liaño. Yet, this would be the doom of the prince, whose hot-blooded nature saw him and his army meet all manner of grievances. That fateful mountain campaign is told in all manner of burlesque plays in Vailbourg, though what really happened is up to debate. Some say an avalanche crushed his army, turning it as white as the prince's nickname, others say it was a betrayal by the orc guides who led them through the mountain passes, and there are also those who claim it was just poor leadership. Whatever the case, the host of the White Prince met a gruesome fate in the mountains along with their leader, never making it out in one piece. A single rider on a half-dead horse was all that remained of an army, returning back to the camp stationed at Salamanca Pass.

Magic in a low-mid fantasy setting shouldn't be flashy, bladty magic.

I propose magic is achieved through the manipulation and invocation of spirits. In the case of Black Magicians, as has already been established, the spirits would be demons from the outer seas. Natural magicians (7th of 7th) might instead be manipulators of the mortal souls around them.

It fits with the black magic and necromancy already established and has more of a low magic vibe, I think.

The Ten Years War Cont:
By its nature, the allied army was comprised of rather superstitious soldiers, for after all, peasants and chevaliers alike can believe in all manner of things given what oddities can be found throughout the wild places in Cambrea. An utter, and completely mysterious destruction of an army was no small matter to these men, and it was soon construed as a bad omen and warning not to trouble the north. With winter coming, the war ground to a halt, letting these fears seep in, giving the northern side enough time to recover from their own trauma. Come spring, there was a renewed vigor from both sides in hopes of new opportunity for their forces, yet circumstances had changed. Emergency deliveries from the Amboise-favoring cities of Nessos had given the latest in military technology, a collection of primitive blackpowder rockets, adapted from the mysterious smiths of the occident. Alongside this, in a stroke of luck for the Amboise-Callois dukes, the Nessans had been convinced to blockade the southern duchies with promises of Granada gold and secret lore in victory. The blockade for an arbitrary reason entirely different from the war, naturally, but it had its effect. The following years would see fortune once again turn against the southern allies, as Duke Henri 1er personally saw to many set-piece battles, earning smashing victories for the Amboise-Callois alliance. At Burgos, Callois chevaliers avenged their fallen brothers under a sky flashing with rockets, their flying above the ashes. At La.Conquête, it was Amboise sailors who won the largest naval battle of the war, awakening the nascent Cambrean naval spirit as the Liaño fleet lay crushed in their own land. Many struggles such as these passed into history and legend, but after ten long years, finally the bloodshed ended. With the siege of Granárbol, finally all four dukes agreed to discuss terms.

The Treaty of the Tree:
All four dukes: the lords of Amboise, Callois, Comete and Liaño met within Granárbol, beneath the very tree the city was built around, based on ancient prophecy. Beneath this venerable monument, they greeted each other as brothers, for regardless of their struggles, they still were bound by royal blood. In the end, the terms given by the Canbreans to the southern duchies were fairly lenient, asking little from them save one crucial thing. All four duchies of Gran Cambrea would join together in a unified nation, as was the dream of wise and chivalrous men like Pedrones and Francesco when they fought for their subjects and friends. The duchy of Amboise would naturally be leader among the four dukes, for they maintained the wealthiest and most centralized of the duchies. Thus, Duke Henri 1er received a second coronation, becoming Grand Duke of Cambrea. The house of Amboise had, in assuming rulership of Cambrea, taken up the very name of the nation they ruled over, and that nation now looked forwards to a better, albeit chaotic future. For, with all wars and distractions beside it, what else was there to await besides the future?

The Era of Conquest:

The ensuing years would be ones of growth, as the once-divided duchies learned to, if not give up arms, at least be at ease around their countrymen. The centralized state was still heavily feudal, and the vassals held the upper hand when it came to levying troops, yet the resources now in the hands of the dukes through trade had allowed for a burgeoning merchant class to challenge the pre-existing social order. Vailbourg in particular was quickly becoming a center of debauchery and high culture in equal measure, with its beauty said to rival even the ancient cities of the Human Empire and Nessos. The other cities were not far behind, with the south quickly becoming famous in distant lands for its fine rivieras, cuisine, and wines, becoming the start of a "grand tour" of Cambrea.

The Era of Conquest Cont:
As the Coronation Calender came into effect, It was clear that Cambrea was part of the civilized world now. For now, at least, the crowned head of Cambrea could look away from the homeland to external affairs, and look to building the nation's influence. Until now, the island of La.Conquête only true colony Cambrea held, and even that had become a fashionable resort for Liañan society and foreign visitors, it was certainly no foreign outpost. Yet, it was on that very island that the Cambrean capacity to sail, adapted from the techniques of the Nessans and local customs, was proven. "Why shouldn't Cambrea become larger?" asked the courtiers, for the splendid natural position of the grand duchy allowed Cambreans to easily access all corners of the world. Yet trade with the west was known, it was trade with the east that truly interested the aristocracy. Given the famous reputation of cuisine from all parts of Cambrea, regardless of their individual identity, spices were a necessary addition to increase the flavor of dishes, at least to the increasingly picky nobility. Many spices were also said to be good for the condition. Yet, with all these benefits, spices were a rarity in the markets, despite Cambrea controlling the Strait of Labastida. There was much else to be gained from exploring the orient: tropical goods, exotic weapons and techniques, and legends from ancient times all now attracted the eyes of Cambrea. Many expeditions were funded by the new grand duke (titled Henri III) himself, who had an avid interest in the tropics, and ships carried merchants, priests, and well-armed ruffians known as "conquistadors" to explore this new world, at least to Cambrean eyes. The adventures the conquistadors embarked on were grand, and they searched for all manner of legends: the fountain of youth, temples made of solid gold, silver in the mouth of great snakes, nothing was too far.

Imperial Decline and the Present Day:
The politics of these distant regions were bizarre, and often conquistadors found themselves gaining the support of locals against enemy chiefs, or simply fighting against them, if they were more beast than man. Each of the colonies slowly expanded over the ages, as the centuries passed and power was increasingly ceded from demonic and monstrous hands to those of gallant Cambreans. Thus, the ports of Nouvelle-Amboise and Rangotte (a Canbrean corruption of the original name, Ranijot) grew to great sizes, with the acquisition of the island of Nueva-Unqueré being a source of pride for the southern Cambreans. In particular, that island proved that Cambreans had not fallen behind their northern kin, for they colonizing it entirely by themselves. Indeed, the southern cities had flourished once again under the colonial expansion due to their convenient harbors, once again rising to compete with the northern cousins. And through the colonies, it is Cambrea who dominates the south east through mastery of several key straits and ports. Yet, this has all led to the state of Cambrea to the modern day, and yet there is no shortage of criticism of the grand duchy by its own people. Thus, domestic politics must once again be observed to notice the gradual, yet steady decline of the country. To imagine that the days of peace and steady overseas expansion remain would be utterly false. Despite maintaining a flow of exotic goods to the home island as was intended, in this new age, the colonies have become havens of evil. The harbors are filled with all manner of base deeds, and corruption has become the watchword of their people. All manner of pirate, even privateers (for piracy is an accepted profession if it's against rivals) perform foul acts, and steal from the worthy.

Imperial Decline and the Present Day Cont:
All gallantry and nobility has perished, with even colonial officials facilitating this chaos, all at the expense of the relentlessly working natives who farm and mine whatever is demanded of them. If quotas are not met, bloodshed ensues. This is a policy not in accordance with the edicts of the dukes, which state to treat all men with respect unless they have wronged you, and yet this ruthlessness continues unimpeded. With the decentralization of the home island, the colonies are the example of what Cambrea stands to become if the minds of its people remain blind to the decadence within their society. Indeed, if revolution does ever break out in Cambrea, the colonies would be the first to secede, such is their autonomy. The home island is not much better, with Vailbourg and many other cities of note being havens of freethinking intellectuals, who challenge the divine right exercised by the feudal lords, even mocking the entire system in satire. It is due to the increasingly prosperity of the nation that such thoughts have originated, yet the nobility, having merged with the merchant class are too pleased with themselves and their new dresses to address the fact that society is turning against them. The immense wealth from Cambrean industries (for such ideas of industry have been widespread as of late) and colonies are not serving to calm the people either. Indeed, what silver and gold does come, what spices arrive in ships are not delivered for sale to the people. They are instead directly delivered to the decadent nobility, who engage in all manner of excessive banquets and celebrations, the likes of which were only seen in the Human Empire before its collapse. Once caring for their subjects, they now leave their fiefs to live in Vailbourg by the grand duke's palace, and all the celebrations that could ever be held cannot appease the hungry poor who find that empire has no value to them.
>>
>>85576757
Conclusion:
With all these illnesses gripping Cambrea, corrupting its noble spirit, the question appears if empire has ran its course. The people are agitated, and revolutionary papers are passed along in secret, with police struggling to catch up. The courts of Cambrea are centuries behind the times, failing to realize that the very innovations in literature and technology the nobles financed are being used against them. With a young queen Marisa XIV coming to power, with Cambrea (Amboise) and Comete blood serving to unite the royalty of north and south the question remains: will the instutions of old survive, or will the tyrants be slain and a new order embraced?

That was, in its entirety, a very brief summary of the history of the Grand Duchy of Cambrea. May the gods be with it for its future, whatever it be...

The continent spanning broken human (and so far nameless) empire depicted here >>85569356 hasn't been added to the new map. And while the southern continent wasn't officially claimed, I can see most or at least half of it being former sovereign territory of the once global nation. The green blob might be a bit bigger than is appropriate though. When OP returns from slumber he'll hopefully have his input.

Current Races and Nations

Races
>Humans - Many varieties and cultures
>Elves - Flesh (normal elves), Wood Elves (made of wood like in Glorantha)
>Orcs - Six varieties of them and definitely evil
>Dwarves - Sun (surface dwelling dwarves), and unknown subterranean dwarves

Nations
>Grand Duchy of Cambrea is the most powerful and advanced nation with a storied past, but slowly falling into decline.
>Nessan Confederacy and Alzirem Region are also influential but are prone to more infighting amongst themselves or manipulated. The Agoran Remnant, not as potent as the others, benefits from trade.
>Gruunwaeldt is currently opening itself up back to the world after isolation but suffers from national "growing pains".
>The Kentavros Tribedo little with worldly affairs aside from caring to their horses and dealing with their neighbors with caution. Meanwhile, the Orklands are altogether infamous for being a rugged and backwater steppe.

Now all I have to do is write a description of each region, and the wider Cambrean/Canbrean culture, then it’ll be ready to be used in writefaggotry. Foreign relations, military, etc. would be nice too. I’ll do it some other time.

No reason why we shouldn't keep this, and it gives me an idea. Maybe the theme of the setting could be an age of exploration, with much of the outer sections of the world still being unexplored. Explorers from civilized nations penetrating into unknown lands, seeing magnificent natural and magical phenomena, finding the countries people place farther off, getting involved in mysterious occult rituals. It'd make things unique. Also, things like races to find the great lakes in the larger continents would be fun.

About the fact that Queen Marisa XIV isn't called Grand Duchess despite the prior compromise to keep four decentralized duchies making up Gran Cambrea, the change from "grand duke" to "king" was a de facto change made due to how long the house of Cambrea had been in power.
>>85580212
In the passing years, as a result increasing contact with the secluded tribes of the spice islands to Cambrea's south east, the colonial ports have been filled with eastern merchants and soldiers of fortune. These exotic visitors have attached the attention of writers and poets such as Louis, Comte d'Unqueré. The count is known for his scandalous plays and dissertations, so it's not surprising his orientalist works on the natives of the spice islands, presented in codex form, caused an uproar in the home island. It is said by the clergy
that romanticizing distant natives is against the Cambrean spirit, and as a result causes a decline in culture and propriety. Still, less pious nobility have come to entertaining guests with eastern tea ceremonies and all manner of foreign entertainment. Even the queen has taken an interest in the east, having hired an oriental artist educated in Cambrean portrait technique to draw her at her coronation, wearing the royal mantle and crown jewels of the now-unified crowns of Cambrea and Comete. Choosing her portraitist was seen as a display of authority by the queen, acting in the manner of her absolutist descendants and enforcing her will on her advisors, rather than being influenced. Those schooled in court etiquette also note the snub given to the pre-eminent "Realiste" school of painting through the slight exaggeration of certain features on the queen, in the Oriental style. It is said that with this snub, the past school of art may be on the way out, if the nobility follow the example set by the grand ducal court.
In other words; yes, she's a weeb.
>>85580234
Anon, that's a reason this artist has displeased the court.

>Czarni Czarow

Czarni Czarów is a far eastern country reminiscent of a dreary and more rundown version of a mix of medieval romania and poland. The peasants there live in fear of the Dark Wizards that inhabit the castles and high towers of the land.
Over the land wafts a dark gray cloud cover that almost never breaks to let through sparse rays of sunlight.
The landscape consists of wide dreary plains, dark forest, swamps and rugged mountains where monsters dwell. Frequently one cannot see one's hand in front of one's eyes when traversing this distant land, as a dense fog descends from the Dark Mountains in the morning and evening. At the easternmost point of the country stands the black fortress in which the necromancer and black magician Icknabog the Cruel reigns over the poor rural population. The region is known for it's black magic academy Scholomance, which lies deep in the Dark Mountains, in a secret location and where black magicians are said to be trained. It is rumored that the students are acquired by so-called black reavers, hooded figures with tall, pointy black hats and dark robes, stealing magically gifted children from the villages and kidnapping them into the dark mountains. After the sun goes down, nobody in their right mind leaves the house in this country.

I like the idea of coming up with lore for the old empire by never writing for it specifically, but rather inferring it's qualities from the lore of the places and people it touched.

Because so far Loria feels like a post Rome Europe. The Empire is gone, but it's shadow lingers.

Hyperboria

There is little of worth in this land, mostly a place of endless hills and low, rough mountains, of dusky, wooded valleys and dark scrub forests, steep gulleys and stony plains upon which little grows. A few mean rivers and streams run through the countryside, feeding bogs and ponds and some isolated lakes. Cloud and fog shrouds the land, forcing upon it a lonely and dismal mien, wind wails through the hills like a banshee, a never-ending lament that shortens tempers and drives men to gloomy, monstrous thoughts.

There are no major cities, no great accomplishments of engineering, and few roads, with the only notable man-made structures being the few barbarian forts and ruins. The Barbarians that inhabit this land cling to it fiercely, and few stray from their homeland, to the south. To a Hyperborian, their homeland is their rightful place, though at times it can seem more a purgatory than a heaven.

just writing about that actually, let me know if this is acceptable. Going for a Trudvang troll vibe but without all the iron
>The Trolldowns are a rolling mass of grassy knolls rising out of misty swamp and marsh, specked with crude monoliths and crumbling ruins. Situated on the northern banks of the largest lake in the world, these lands are almost completely unexplored, owing to the rumored hostility of their inhabitants: trolls. These hunched and hulking behemoths travel in small clan-herds of up to 10 individuals, and can grow up to 6 metres in height (ostensibly! since few have ever laid eyes on one), but were a troll to straighten up, it would surely surpass that height at least once over. Troll herds usually seem to comprise of up to three bulls with their harems and young. Bull trolls sprout impressive curved tusks, which are used in self-defense and when competing for territory or mates. These tusks are often decorated with stone baubles, wooden carvings, or incised in intricate patterns. They are exceedingly rare, and many would pay a hefty price to display them in their halls.
>Though stories of trolls feasting on the flesh of men are well-known and used the world over to put unruly children to bed, one would be hard-pressed to find actual proof of such a claim; if only because the Trolldowns have not been inhabited by humans for centuries at the least. Judging by what little loot brave explorers (read: graverobbers) have managed to bring back from the southernmost edges of that place, and their tales of hollowed hills brimming with treasure, underground palaces, malevolent tombs, cold barrows, and weird carved-stone pillars, it may once have been a realm of Men. Or could the trolls themselves have built those things in ages past?
>Not much else is know about the lifestyle and culture of the trolls. Some learned men even cast doubt on their supposed sentience, seeing them as nothing more than dull lumbering beasts.

I figured since it's not really been explored, it wouldn't have a single name, especially with all the different cultures around, so I ripped off Tolkien's Barrow Downs and South Downs and just called it Trolldowns for now. I'm thinking of putting a little conlang I've been making to good use and having the trolls speak it, which would mean its troll-name could be something like Uusha, "Marshes" (literally water-shallow)

The country of Kemet-Elles came to be when a group of mercenaries under the command of an 16 years old exile that financed the whole trip conquered the small island southeast of the remnant roughly 200 years ago, marrying into the native population that lived around so called tomb cities, becoming it´s ruling caste. Now they have a culture centered around ancestor worship, worship of the royal bloodline and saintification of heroes from the countries history. The islands most fertile areas are it´s shores which house an untold number of farms, fisheries and wheatfields. The industry along with it´s population centers are still located inland across fast "cities of the dead". The city of the living is the nations capital and located on the islands northern shore. All dead must be buried outside the city. The peninsular part of the country had only been conquered - by marriage - in the past 50 years and remains a culture similar to the island of 200 years ago. Allthough it is more focused on the river delta which the peninsula encompasses, since that area is more fertile than the islands and it´s own shores. Plans to conquer the lands east along the river up to it´s currently semi-mythical source have been made but not a step has been taken to make it a reality.

Krohms terrain is a mix of mountains, deserts and dry plains ruled by barbarians in loincloths. Mighty beasts like the Kohr Pigs roam these hostile and barren lands. Rumor has it that even some serpent priests founded archaic sacrificial cults and erected their primitive palaces near the shore. At least those who managed not to be usurped by the bloodthirsty barbarians with a blind hatred of all things magical. In addition the barbarian cities carved into the light brown rock and protected by large pointed stakes driven into the ground, there are a few wandering tent settlements of desert nomads who trade with the barbarians and are excellent with arrows and bows. In the land's numerous arenas, which are really just holes used as deadly fighting pits, the most physically fit warriors (sometimes even females) can display their mighty strength and brutality. Krohm is located south of Hyperboria and covers a vast area.

>The Spider Thicket
The Spider Thicket is a dense coniferous forest northwest of the Orkland. Its name comes from the large number of horse-sized spiders that live here. The largest specimens can become even more massive. Before the eruption, the forest was inhabited by wildmen, who, however, have either been completely exterminated or relegated to remote outlying areas since the spiders preyed on them. They are hardened and fearless primitives at about the cultural level of Bronze Age Germans. They are extremely suspicious of strangers and have an animal temperament. The berserkers of her people are respected and feared even by the barbarians of Hyperboria. If they go into battle dazed from the fly agaric potion they consume before fighting, they will fall into a blood frenzy and longer feel any pain. They'll even continue fighting with several severed limbs. The wildmen keep massive moss-covered weasents for cattle, from whose coiled horns they fashion great war horns.

Okay, that whole region is pretty savage. All manner of orks to the north with barbarians and steppe folk beyond and Kromn just down the coast.

Temen is a land of fortified ziggurats south of Orkland. The people of this land are human, but of a race not seen elsewhere in Loria. Maps dating back to the old empire have the entire region labeled Orkland, suggesting the people of Temen have only arrived to this land in the past few centuries.

What is known for certain is that they are a very religious people who worship Shem. Whether Shem is a god, a title, a specific individual or an ideal is unclear. What is clear is the Temenese relationship with Orks. They make use of several of the less savage breeds as slaves and soldiers. In fact, it is widely believed that the first Uruk were bred by the people of Temen. It was by using these savage slave soldiers that they were able to carve a land of their own from their hostile surroundings.

The people of Temen are secretive and wary of outsiders. Those few who dare travel to their land for trade are relegated to merchant towns beyond the imposing walls of the Temenese ziggurats. There they trade luxury goods in exchange for rare metals and gemstones.

>Goblin Jags
The goblin jags, are a high rocky mountain range of black stone, which is penetrated like Swiss cheese by cave systems of various vicious goblin species. The photophobic creatures flock to the surface in the evening to hunt for wildlife and anything else that strays into their mountains at night. Horrible fellbeasts nest on the peaks of the black mountains, looking like grotesque caricatures of dragons. They are large, winged creatures without feathers, that have pinions in between their horned fingers, and whose bodies give off a vile stench. While not preferred by them, goblins are their most common prey and are terrified of the beasts, which they refer to as "Winged Shadows". Some of the native goblin species are capable of rudimentary blacksmithing. They are armed with halberds, sickles, knives, daggers, man-catchers and spears, which they fashion from the polluted black ore of the mountains.

Trees resembling the baobab or thorn-bush soar up to the heavens, their canopies over 100 yards high and perhaps half that wide. Strange flowers and fungi glow in the dark to the cacophony of vicious howls and hoots torn from the throats of unseen monstrosities. But this unassailable wall of red and green was not the only reason d'Aville forsook his journey and turned back with full sail!
>He claims that, as once the ship lay waiting with dropped anchor, there came from the forest a great creaking and crashing, and to the horror of all the crew there flew at the vessel a great tree-trunk, as long as the Ballenarion prow to stern, and impacted the water not ten yards from her port! Through the spray and chaos d'Aville had chanced to glimpse the attacker, and the sight froze his blood.

>A great elephant, as giant as the trees around it, and yet man-like in form, crouched upon three legs with arm extended outwards along two white and gleaming tusks, a ripped-up conifer still grasped in its tremendous fingers. This too it upheld, and waving it violently threw the wooden shaft towards the vessel again, but overshot, thank heavens, and merely knocked her colours from the mizzen with a splintering that rocked the Ballenarion frightfully! Presently amidst the chaos on her deck the titan retreated, its anger mercifully spent, and not one man of the crew dared continue their voyage. The trek back along that dreadful coast was fraught with many a sleepless night for both crew and captain, and it's said by those who saw the Ballenarion make port that even as the crew disembarked, their miens were ashen-white.
>But such tales are for alewives and old seamstresses, and for the ears of children, and not a man believes them in all Cambrea, save those, perhaps, that saw the Ballenarion come in, all haste and a-trembling, to dock, with only shards of wood where once her colours flew.

Along the northern coast of the northern continent is a region called the Salt Graves. It is a cold, dreary place sandwiched between a range of twisted mountains to the south and jagged coastal cliffs to the north. The old Empire never stretched so far as to claim the Salt Graves, its northern borders only touching the southern edge of the mountains. Imperial Explorers knew what lay beyond, but they saw no glory or wealth to be found in that awful place.

The Salt Graves are peopled by a race of beings of questionable ancestry. If they are of human stock they are so far removed as to no longer be considered men. Typical Gravlings are shorter by a head than any civilized man. Theirs are a people of withered grey skin and oily black hair. The only remotely redeeming quality the Gravlings possess are their eyes; brilliant aquamarines and purples and teals.

These people live as fishermen and, occasionally, raiders. Their ships are small and swift and made from trees of blackened wood. When they raid the northern shores of nearby lands they take people, not treasures. Their hostages are seized under cover of night a whisked away to the north. There is never any ransom, nor have they ever been observed using slaves.

The Salt Graves have never known the gods of the inner sea. These salt withered wretched worship the creatures and things of the northern ocean.

Say, could add a river system in the souther continent? With one end at the green tip, one end at the southernmost point, another end maybe in the north and the rivers source somewhat in the middle. Thought that would make sense. Maybe we should add some other river system to the other continents. Might also help with trade route mapping, I doubt all of the routes would be along the shorelines.

That would be it. There really isn't any geographic significance to holding Krohm, and it doesn't have enough resources to warrant invasion. Besides, it would be a massive expense to hold the place, and inefficient too with the locals doing as they like since you can't police a wasteland, and the people wouldn't be happy to be ruled by foreigners either. Besides with all the internal tension in Cambrea, expansion is the last thing people want.

Trying to consolidate history of the Ancient Empire’s lands. Not claiming any territory, but trying to unify the lore presently collected and add upon it, as its currently implied the Empire is history.

Dark Red - Provinces with full rights and privileges for citizens, heavy cultural impact
Light Red - Extractive colonies/client states, minimal cultural impact, and limited rights of subjects

Brief History
>Old Empire stretched throughout most of the western Inner Sea, may have been known as the “Pan-Rothakian Empire” in some dialects
>through alliances, trade deals or by conquest, colonies and client-states were established
>some colonies in southeast Almeros are given full rights by the empire as fully integrated “homeland” provinces
>pic related is the apogee of the Empire, lasting for a period 90~ years and considered the Golden Age
>eventually in its history, civil wars and strife reach a point where the Empire is no longer viable
>a group of heroic adventurers topple the imperial government, destroying the millennia old nation
>the homeland of the Empire in the southern continent is war-torn and ruined to the point where it’s unrecognizable
>colonial territories break free of imperial influence entirely
>”The Broken Empire” which are/were the continental claimants of Almeros, north of Nessos which consisted of the Primal Empire, Holy Empire, and the Greenlanders
>The Remnant claims to be the direct continuation, but is not truly recognized as such by the other claimants
>Kemet-Elles recently assimilated parts of the old empire’s land into their own country
>Grand Duchy of Cambrea, whose historical origins have some evidence of imperial influence, currently succeeds where the ancients failed

Today, many nations claim to be the true “successor”, but the real answer is still argued to this day.
>>
>>85585180
Well, you could see the splendor of the Nessan cities. From there you could then continue south west to explore the outer coast's of the western and southern continents. The Westen especially.

I wonder if this world could support an Ibn Battuta style explorer. A man who sets off on a short journey that ends up taking him the length of the world over the course of decades.

Good ideas, I'm thinking about an adventure to discover the world's largest lake in the western continent, but that'll have to wait until I know who stays there. >Troll Teeth
The Troll teeth are a mountain range that spans from the Orkland along the border of the Kentavros Grasslands. It consists of relatively low mountains that change into rocky hills at their base, which from a distance look like the earth has a warty rash there. Three species of hulking trolls live in this mountain range. Foul-smelling gases rise from some rock crevices from the underground to the surface and parts of the mountains, which lie near troll caves, are covered with animal, orc and human bones. In the troll teeths you'll find a unique brown ore called Rust Chunk, which is not suitable for making swords or other blades, as rusts easily and if forged too fine will break into dull jagged edges. However, it's well suited for the production of thick nails, crow's feet and morning stars and has the side effect that wounds struck with it heal very poorly and cause heavy bleeding. Trolls and orcs use this trait to their advantage. The troll species resident in the Troll Teeth include the following:

>Orkland trolls
Trolls two men tall. They differ most from the other troll species of the region due to their somewhat lanky and more agile physique. They can move quickly, climb decently and are extremely irritable and aggressive. Their diet consists entirely of meat, preferring that of humanoids. Occasionally, individuals of this species will temporarily join raiding orc hordes for opportunistic reasons. This troll species is mostly found in Orkland Caves but some stray specimens live in the neighboring Troll Teeth mountains.

>Cave trolls
Trolls with a tough leathery hide. They are usually about two to three men tall and use small tree stumps or large animal bones as clubs. Another attack strategy is to throw heavy boulders at enemies from further away or roll them down from a high altitude. They have flat, stupid faces with rough butchered features and a flat nose made up of two slits. A subspecies of cavetroll turns to stone when hit by sunlight. However, there are also specimens that can move during the day, even if the sun's rays slow them down in their movement speed. The biggest and rarest subspecies of cave troll can reach up to the size of five men.

>Stone trolls
Trolls as big as the largest cave trolls. Minerals grow on their backs and their skin is as hard as stone. They live in the depths of tunnels and rarely come to the surface. Although the sunlight does not harm them, they fear it just as much as they do wide open spaces

>Mountain trolls
Trolls who would be mistaken for giants by many if they weren't so abysmally ugly and had a more animalistic appearance. They can reach the size of a full-grown Iron Oak tree and can be compared to forces of nature in battle. While their skin isn't quite as tough as that of the stone trolls, they make up for it with a blind frenzy when in combat coupled with an extraordinary level of stupidity. Thank goodness they are extraordinarily rare.

Culture:
The most important thing for anthropologists seeking to analyze Cambrean culture to understand, is that there is no true Cambrean identity. "Cambrean" is simply a blanket term referring to the natives of the landmass of Gran Cambrea, and even in the modern day it is common for a peasant to see themselves as a man of their village first, and a Cambrean second. This introduces a distinct problem of how arbitrary an analysis of Cambrean culture should get, and if there can truly be a Cambrean identity in the first place. Still, the scholars of the Académie Canbreén have decided to narrow it down to the following elements.
-any human native of Cambrea is a Cambrean, with claims (such as being a Calloiard) being counted as a subculture
-subculture is divided foremost on language, for Cambrean and Canbrean are distinct enough in the fifth century C.C. to mark north and south Cambrea as subcultures
-subculture can be narrowed down to ducal level, with a subject's duchy of familial ties being the deciding factor.
-there is no such thing as a colonial identity, since a family tree always traces back to the home island
-these rules only apply to natives, with the other inhabitants of Cambrea (primarily intelligent orcs and expatriates) not being counted as ethnically Cambrean

While created as part of a ducal agenda to control the growth of culture and the two languages, these criteria are enough to confirm a Cambrean culture existing, and allowing us an analysis of the Cambreans.

Cambreans are a fair people, though distinctly swarthier in the south (this leads to all manner of crude jokes by Canbreans about Cambreans having orc blood). They bear dark hair and blue eyes, and, most importantly, a gallant spirit. This spirit has been diluted as of late, but the laws of chivalry and propriety are still the guiding tenets of the church, and many Cambreans who fight the decadence within their home.

Follow Up part for Kemet-Elles. The Thirteen Nomes are the part of Kemet not integrated by marriage into the new nation. Nominally the nomes where adminstrative units in the old province of Kemet, now they are a barely functioning bunch of city states each lead by a Nomarch. Being a blend of old kemetan and old imperial culture they saw the marriage of the last Pharaoh (once a king, then head administrator of the old imperial province, then a king again) as a sellout and betrayal. They managed to retain their indep
endence in what they call the first pharaonic war which was a complete rout on their end but did not let Elles advance further. Calling their new neighbor Kemet-Elles is outlawed in all 13 nomes. They have a river running through their lands and their northern and eastern borders are the other two rivers signaling the geographical borders of the peninsula. The other imperial remnants on the continent no longer consider them a country or province. In their eyes eastern Kemet is nothing more but a lawless region in need of being pacified again.

On that note, I found the new project start in the last thread. Can actually now clam through it and also add lore to the doc (was kinda to lazy to do anything but maintain it before, sorry). Help would still be appreciated though.

>Leech Bogs
Traversing these swamps is an absolute nightmare. The muddy waters and fetid ponds are inhabited by various leech, eel and lamprey species, one more dangerous then the other, ugly predatory fish, giant poisonous serpents, deadly diseases, leech hydra, will-o'-wisps, water corpses, giant toads, slugs, vicious swamp dweller, and some even say witches haunt the land. Anyone contemplating entering these unholy, stinking marshes should either turn back immediately or drown themselves in the nearest lake to avoid suffering. The Leech bogs lie above the Spider Thicket and extend across a wide plain. There are said to be some semi-humanoid denizens in this murky hell who feed on the bogs' fish, herbs and mushrooms and make a living from trading swamp resources such as turf, tar, bog iron, toad leather, pickled food, poisons, drugs or stolen goods. Since no sane person enters this area, they are dependent on trading with each other and attacking, robbing and, in the worst case, cooking the few local travelers. The residents are said to be mostly bog goblins, swamp ogres, aquatic creatures and some amphibious toad people. At the very edges of the swamps are a few human fishing villages, populated by people whose ancestors should be considered suicidal for choosing this very place as their home.

Culture Cont:
This spirit was inspired by chevaliers, emphasizing the importance of élan in common life and war, and to aid those unable to aid themselves. This is often translated into enjoying life's simple pleasures, leading to many calling Cambreans lazy, content to sit around and spend a day drinking wine and cheese. Yet, this is simply the realizing of the gallant spirit, odd as it may be. They are also often superstitious, putting great stock in omens and old tales of heroes. This is true regardless of rank, with the main exception being freethinkers, who challenge these motions with universal ideologies.
There are three estates of Cambreans: the clergy, nobility, and peasantry, respectively. This has always been the case, developed from the ancient priest and noble class of the old walled cities in Unqueré. The priests had no military power, but they gave the favor of the gods to whatever duke, baron, chevalier (and everything in between) that supported them, a necessity for a good reign. Thus, they are the highest, yet often the least politically active estate. Yet there is a new caste of donation-hungry priest that abandons vows of humility in Cambrea, building magnificent temples for the dukes while neglecting acts of charity to the poor. The nobility, meanwhile, are a fragmented and mighty group. With royal blood putting them above all other men, they are tasked with managing all the constituent states that make up Cambrea, embodying the paradigms of chivalry as the chevaliers of old did. Again, this has been found lacking as of late, a problem starting with the gradual centralization policy of the grand dukes of Cambrea. It was the construction of the magnificent Palais de Valtiers of Grand Duke Claude XV in Vailbourg that enticed the vassals of Amboise to leave their duties for a chance to be favored by the duke in Vailbourg, and grow mighty.

Through becoming the very essence of an absolute king, Claude ingeniously turned the typically rebellious vassals into glorified syncopants through displays of extravagance and might. Daily fireworks displays and horse ballets drew the attention of all Cambrea back to the grand duke's court, keeping his vassals loyal and, as more came to visit Valtiers, within his direct control. It was by this policy that his power swelled to being given the privilege of being called a king, a tradition maintained by the house of Amboise to this day. If you were anyone, you were at Valtiers in those days, a model quickly copied by the other duchies in their own palaces. The realm had been centralized, but this caused a schism between those who would tend to their duties and those who would seek forwards mobility. With the coronation of Queen Marisa, the countryside has been in the worst state yet, as poor management allows horrid landlord practices, forcing peasants off their land and into the cities. The colonies have mitigated this decline with new products, but if the core of Cambrean wealth is neglected, how can the home island hold itself together?
Even the chevaliers, who once were an estate unto themselves have simply become the lowest rank of noble, dressing with the latest tricorne fashions to keep up in court. The idea of a "gendarme", a highly armored noble cavalryman, has been proposed to allow a way for the chivalric tradition to be maintained, even for those who are not chevaliers in rank.
Now, all of these high politics are held at the expense of a very common, and very poor people: the peasantry. The third estate has made it through the ages relatively unchanged, save of course the abolition of serfdom in 236 C.C., following a great unrest. Rural peasants are still at the mercy of their landlord, with little rights or education by which to defend their land. A good vassal keeps them happy, while a poor one taxes them into misery.

>Orgoth
Orgoth is a corrupted land that does not allow any vegetation or life to grow. It consists of a single barren wasteland of black, sharp-edged stone and on its border steep black mountains rise like crooked fingers into the sky. This sky is obscured by dark plumes of smoke rising from the underground warforges and volcanic mountains on the northeastern coast. Near thiose mountain rises a massive, towering black fortress called Mors Mordris, which took a millennia to build and claimed the lives of generations of goblin, orc and troll slaves. It's pointed pinnacles inspire fear in the beholder and its peak cannot be seen when standing at its foot, for it is shrouded and obscured by a black cloud. Anyone who ventures there will be torn apart by the Nameless One's hungry grunts and minions. Sulphurous fumes rise from crevices in the ground of this land and no one who has set foot there has ever left. The ancient evil that inhabits this land has many names that no one utters, and if they do, only in great fear. Whispered rumors say an army full of grotesque and ugly creatures has been gathering in the shadows of the fortress for quite some time.
>>
>>85586287
Still, most peasants are relatively content with their lot. They are a simple people, whether Cambrean or Canbrean, harvesting their crops and looking forward to the next holy day or festival. They do not know much of higher ideals, yet a cunning populist can speak with their concerns in mind, inciting them against the second estate. Famines, poor living conditions, and strongarming farmers out of their land are the key issues that could turn the rural peasant revolutionary, and either the royalty will have to do something, or the powder keg will burst.
The real sedition is not in the country, however, it's in the city. In recent times, the old cities of Cambrea have suffered a wave of displaced peasants, a concern that the philosophers of Vailbourg note with increasing anger. These intellectuals are poets, novelists, playwrights, theoreticians at any given time, whatever earns them enough to pay the rent. They have been educated in all manner of fields, and are both an asset and bane of the nobility. Their immediate use is in fulfilling commissions, for by sponsoring a play, or publishing a tract promoting industry, a clever nobleman can gain a great deal of prestige. Yet, sometimes these writers can go rogue, gathering together in their little circles and publishing pamphlets critiquing the present system. They are the source of most criticisms, and are often the foe of the police, who track down hiding printing presses publishing anti-clergy and, even worse, populist agendas. Most populists are either friends of these men, or a member of the intelligentsia themselves, and as their name implies, populists claim a revolution is necessary to save Cambrea from tyranny.

>>85586427
The bourgeois are another oddity, being rich peasants who have intermarried into nobility. They are the owners of most factories, for they are well-acquaintanced with earthly problems, with a hunger to rise up in the world. These combine to make them the investors who support industry. At the moment, there are relative few factories, and they still operate on an artisan basis, but who knows what these upstarts will think of next. Whatever the next step of their master plan is, they certainly have appealed to the second estate, becoming wealthy enough to stand on equal grounds to nobles. Rather than compete with the flashy shows typical of barons, they instead assured their harmless intent, and found themselves with noble brides when heard by sympathetic ears. Of course, they are just as often tossed out of a manor, so the fusion of the bourgeois and nobility had been a slow process. Still, it is ongoing, and perhaps having rulers familiar with both high and low society could be the solution to the unrest in Cambrea. One final note about this group would be that the Nessan community in Cambrea is most often considered part of the bourgeois, a process that started with the arrival of the first Nessan triremes.
Orcs are the only other notable group in Cambrea, though no sane orc would ever try and call themselves a Cambrean. There are many breeds of orc, yet it is pig noses, toad skins, and uruks that are not confined to the untamed wilds alone. Indeed, while most orcs are bandits, attacking travelers and making inland travel in Cambrea a risk without proper guards, there are also those who have been civilized to a degree. It is impossible to suppress the urge to do evil within the orc, yet they are simple creatures, and are willing to obey a master if allowed to do their own business. As it happens, the Cruzade marked the point where Cambreans became being grudgingly seen as masters, allowing for orcs to be seen in society.

>The Great Bone Desert
The Great Bone Desert is exactly what the name suggests. A wasteland of human and animal bones that crack under your boots as you traverse it. Some of the bones have been ground into bone dust over time, creating shifting white dunes that make orientation difficult, and large holes filled with dust that are easy to sink into and drown in. The bone white of the desert is dazzling when the sun falls on it and anyone who spends several days in this hostile environment runs the risk of going blind temporarily and, in the worst case, permanently. No one knows where all the bones come from, but the majority appear to be from humans, horses, cattle, and smaller animals. Nothing survives in this wasteland except a few rats feeding on the carcasses of travelers and a few snakes feeding on the rats. From time to time one encounters mounds of bones in the desert, which seem to have been piled up artificially. It may be some kind of ancestral ritual or religious sacrifice.
>>
I'll try and make all this more readable in whatever we're using to store information.
>>85586526
While looked down upon, Orcs sometimes live in their own neighborhoods within cities. They are often hired as impartial bodyguards, or in the case of toad skins, entertainers. Despite orc bodyguards seeming like what a backstab waiting to happen, it has been discovered over the ages that sufficient payment and appeasement will make an orc surprisingly quiet around his paymaster. It is often pig noses or uruks who guard human caravans through the Cambrean roads. As for toad skins, they have an odd niche in chivalric literature, often being cast as foolish troubadors and jesters who accompany a questing chevalier. Thus, they are often captured and broken into being entertainers and musicians, and surprisingly good ones too.
The colonies have all manner of exotic residents, either native subjects, or foreign visitors. The cultural influence of these foreigners in Cambrea has already been noted (>>85580687), and this requires no more explanation.

That was a simple overview of Cambrea and the Camvreans. Of course, subcultures need to be covered as well, but that is a subject better fitting for a section on geography.

A large Flesh Elf kingdom on the western most continent (probably the southern part) the lands of Fashia are green and healthy. Although the Flesh Elves are the majority population their wood elf cousins can be found in tribes in the wooded areas mostly ignorant to the laws of those who claim their land. As an elven kingdom many surrounding nations of other races consider them snobbish, odd, and arrogant but Fashia is destined to prove these rumors untrue. The Elves of Fashia are modernists and are working towards achieving world recognition. The most sought after jobs in these lands are those of scholars and inventors always working hard to innovate and bring about a golden age of knowledge. This brings them into conflict with the wood elves in the country however who prefer to live by nature and follow the spirits. Tensions brew between the groups but Fashia learning from the troubles of Alzirem wish to steer clear of civil war.

A flat foggy marshland filled with corpses. Nothing lives there but only very experienced guides can maneuver their way through the marsh passing the sinkholes and the many small ponds in whose waters there are corpses that pull you down if you step or fall into them. A strange aura of sadness affects everyone who enters this marsh and those who are in it for too long develop depression-like symptoms that can go so far that they simply lie down on the damp ground out of sheer lethargy and don't get up anymore. The marshlands form a stretch of land west of Orgoth.

It definitely wasn't a regular thing, but some people definitely have ventured that far up north over the years. Since the Trolldowns are so mysterious, perhaps the work could be seen as unreliable and fantastical in the modern day, kind of like Spanish conquistadors' accounts of their journeys the New World. But maybe there's some truth to it this time for a change.

>The Tetrarchate of Darium

In the years following the collapse of the old empire, the imperial homeland was largely ruined. Years of infighting left the weakened country vulnerable to invasions. Today, the former province of Darium is covered in the desolation of years past, overgrowth overtaking the deserted cities and towns. Temperate trees grow in the midst of once proud buildings. Bandits prey on travelers walking the fractured highways. But four settlements remain from those days, each ruled by a High Lord, descended from the ancient senatorial families. The militant denizens of Fort Hastum seek to conquer the fledgling town of Capras. Meanwhile, the scholars of Taveas argue between which of the Cambrean and Nessan philosophies are best to follow as the ever-powerful high-lord of Zarem positions himself to become king over the land.

Relations with different neighboring nations and the Tetrarchate are often talked about between the High Lords. The lawless region of Kemet-Elle in the south is quickly becoming a threat, while they cannot generally rely on the Nessan “mongrels” as allies. While the Agorans supply the adamantine ore to the Tetrarchate, they do not acknowledge their imperial claim. Debate spurs whether or not to go to war with Kemet-Elle or ally with them to conquer the Agorans and reap the spoils together.

>>85586755
That island definitely would be the Imperial Capital of the old empire. Its got an ideal spot for trading within the Inner Sea. But I believe that the Remnant would be separate entity from the Imperial Capital since the empire’s collapse. But, the Capital and Agoran Remnant have come to recognize each other as legitimate successors, even if the others do not agree.

In the southern region of the northern continent are the Kingdoms of Eastern and Western Revia.

Once, long ago, Revia was the Empires northern holding. A colony across the sea. The Imperials conquered the tribal people of the land and built great cities in the styles of their home to the south. But as the days of empire waned the governor's of the colonies saw the opportunity to become something more. They declared independence from the Empire which had grown too weak and disorganised to bring them in line.

After a considerable amount of infighting the region was unified by an Imperial general, who became the first king of Revia. For centuries the land has seen a divide between those natives still clinging to their tribal ways, the 'civilized' lower class of city natives and the upper class descended from the old empire. Revia is a land trapped in a cycle of tyranny and the constant uprisings such tyrannical rule both creates and destroys. But for a peasant who does their job and keeps their head down, it's not a bad place to live.

Currently the kingdom is divided by a long standing succession crisis. The war between East Revia, ruled by the former kings bastard son, and West Revia, ruled by his one and only daughter, has waged for a decade.

Next to the Leech Bogs are is a vast wilderness known as the Berengar Plains. They are swarmed by huge centipedes that burrow underground, creating a network of tunnels. It's also said that the plains are haunted by a bride-to-be who was murdered by her jealous husband. Her spirit can be found roaming the plains during the night, her banshee screams turning anyone who hears them completely insane.

The Swamp Cemetary is a large region north of the Battlefield Marshes. Its landscape is dotted by impenetrable swamps, bogs and marshes. The many abandoned and ran down castles and palaces indicate that sometime in the past there used to be a thriving Kingdom in those lands.

The swamps are littered with many critters, such as the Drowning Spirits, humanoid amphibians who lurk below the waters, and Scythelles, large carnivorous plants. Some hermits live in the caves that are found around the swamp, consuming hallucinogenic fungi.

> Traders city of Kvar
> Kvar free trade region (KFTR)

In the cavity left behind by meteor impact (something alike picrel), a free traders city was established. The surrounding area is under the jurisdiction of the free traders guild. Made up from heads that represent different trades.

The city of Kvar is a place for merchants all around Loria to gather and show their goods. New inventions and technologies are also presented here.

In the city and in the area there are embassies of nations around the world.

Kvar is also a place for black market goods such as drugs and mercenaries. The availability of these resources are often not appreciated by surrounding nations. So there is an ongoing political campaign to stop the black market. Which makes for internal conflict in the guild.

Fuck you, don't talk to me like that.

But alright, I'm quite new to this, so have a little patience with me.

The crater itself lies on a great plains region.
Close to the crater there is a big quarry, where most of the building resources are gathered. Wood is imported by traders from other regions.

I am going for a slavic/persian mixed theme.

Most buildings in the crater are made up of stone, especially buildings with a function. Like embassies, religious buildings, big markets ...

Surrounding the crater are wooden homes and camps.

If this is not enough, you can ask nicely... for more input :)

Perhaps the greatest city in Nessos is Tholos.

Tholos is a city that sprawls all along the edges and many small islands of a great bay. The people of Tholos travel as much by boat as by foot in their day to day lives. Its architecture is typical of Nessen cities; short, wide domes interspersed with tall spires and decorated with all manner of banners. Beyond the coastal city are great groves of fruit bearing trees and vines.

The greatness of Tholos comes from it's position in the center of Nessos. Geographically. Politically. Culturally. The Tholosians have secured themselves as a home for philosophers and a neutral ground for their Nessan cousins to meet on. Countless peace treaties, trade deals and philosophical texts have been written in Tholosian ink.

It's greatness also comes from having defied the old empire. It was Tholos that held the legions back. It was Tholos that united their fellow Nessans against the invaders. It was Tholos that smuggled weapons to those within the Empire that sought to throw off the chains of oppression.

>Desmodontinae - Land of the Holy Blood

Located in the north west of the northern continent, this mountainous region is comprised of dark forests, coastal farmlands, and winding rivers. The lowlands are often covered in mist due to the warmer southern winds that blow northward. The rivers act as arteries for trade and commerce, with ore and lumber travelling downstream, and goods and supplies heading upstream. The highest point of the land is in the east, creating a natural barrier with few ways of crossing.

The culture of the Desmonese is centred around worship of the Holy Blood, a blessing bestowed by the church to those with the divine right to rule. Those blessed with the holy blood become a blessed vampire. These vampires are protectors of the lands under their rule, defending the common folk from any danger that besets them. It is said that they cannot walk in the sun because to do so be to neglect their sworn duty. While the gods protect good folk by day, it is their duty to watch by night. There is sometimes infighting between great houses, but that is only when one house had forsaken their duty are forfeited their divine right.

The lords of the land are sustained by the blood of the faithful, and only the most pious are chosen for the honor of adding to the strain of the holy blood. It is said that the holy blood was bestowed to the people of the land after a god witnessed their suffering and felt pity upon them. The god strode from the sea and blessed the first pope, who founded the sacred See of Haematage, located on the western coast. A few blasphemers have pointed out that the western shore is neither the north or south sea, so how can anyone be certain it was a god or a demon, but the faithful don't listen to such nonsense.

The See of Haematage is located on the holy ground where the ocean meets the land, and where the first vampire was blessed. It is a lavish jewel, as most of the churches are, coated in gold, with large stained glass windows depicting various saints, and towering spires and bell towers. Within the holy see and much of the surrounding city are canals that gondoleirs use to ferry holy men and other denisens.

>Krohms terrain is a mix of mountains, deserts and dry plains ruled by barbarians in loincloths. Mighty beasts like the Krohm Pigs roam these hostile and barren lands. >Pirate Concord of Ortuga

It is said that these waters are forever cursed with the blood of treachery. The old Ortugani tribal tales tell of a tribal chieftain who tricked the goddess of the southern ocean by capturing her heart, and his line would be cursed to sail the seas forevermore to search for gold to replace that which was stolen. In the contemporary era, the pirates of Ortuga can be located on the four-island chain from the western coast of Kemet-Elle and the eastern coast of Idorea. Historically, the pirates have persisted since the times of the old empire and continue to this day. Despite numerous attempts from Nessan, Kemetan, and Remnant navies, no force has yet been able to dissolve the Concord. The pirates plunder vulnerable merchant ships from all the who enter their waters. The Ortuga Islands are tropical, holding the ritualistic tribes who are on good relationships with the pirates as many of them descend from their stock. The main island of Uvaturi is a haven of looters, plunderers, whoredoms, and loiterers. Though the pirates themselves are for the most part wretched, there is a modicum of honor between them to not attack each other most of the time. On occasion, they sell their services as privateers to fight whatever navy they're told to fight.

Many pirate fleets of Ortuga are independent, but legend says that there is a secret society among them who sacrifice to the southern ocean to appease her hunger for gold.
