The creator of the internationally renowned Catan board game, Klaus Teuber, has died aged 70. German-born Mr Teuber died on 1 April after a "short and serious" illness, his family said in a statement.

More than 40 million copies of Catan have been sold since it came onto shelves in 1995, and it has been translated into more than 40 languages. Catan Studio described him as a "kind and selfless human being" and "inspirational leader" in a statement.

The company encouraged fans to honour Mr Teuber's memory by "being kind to one another, pursuing your creative passions fearlessly and enjoying a game with your loved ones". The game of Catan, originally known as The Settlers of Catan, sees players compete to colonise the fictional island of Catan.

They can do so by building settlements and roads using resources that can be traded to gain control of the island. Catan was Mr Teuber's second board game, his first - Barbarossa - was released in 1988 and did not enjoy the same success. Before he forayed into creating board games, Mr Teuber worked as a dental technician.

we have very few Major Happenings™ that deserve a sticky. Mostly it's industry news and such. Board speed isn't at the point where we need stickies for things to keep there from being duplicate threads. Also, I believe we behave enough that we don't need as much mod attention as some boards.

Also stickies get unstickied when they're no longer important, so you may just have missed one.

>catan has no characters to argue about or constant updates to look forward to

or compelling gameplay to make you return to it again and again

it's Monopoly with the fun sucked out and a load of busy work put in

the point of the game isn't playing the game as an objective against other players, it's fulfilling the criteria of playing the game in your own mind; it's the fucking Skyrim of board games except instead of wheels of cheese you're eating shit and instead of slaying dragons you're destroying your precious finite existence with a game nobody gives a shit about even when they play it

with franchise IP you can at least say people are excited to play, with Catan it's a chore that you do for the sake of saying you did it, not because it's a pleasant or worthwhile experience

if it were a marriage Catan would end with a no-fault divorce after 6 weeks or a murder-suicide after 60 years and all that would set those events apart would be the individual attitude each player brings

it is not a good game

I'd put Acquire, Dune, and MtG ahead of Risk for games that have had massive impacts on modern board game design.
>>
>>88343322
Nah, I can legitimately believe that someone would think that. Board games are a pretty niche on /tg/, being sequestered away in a single general.
Plenty of Warhammer or TTRPG fans probably haven't played much beyond Monopoly, Risk, Axis & Allies, etc... in their lives.
>>
>>88343350
It has to be trolling because how the fuck would anyone consider monopoly fun, even those who have played wargames and ttrpgs
honest question, when compared to literally any traditional game I can't see what's likeable about monopoly. Even as a little kid I had a lot of fun being dumb with the game of the goose and as an adult I apreciate all the hidden esoteric meaning that "non-game" has. Monopoly? I have fucking nothing, its literally the same as the game of the goose or snakes and ladders but more shit on top to confuse kids and no profound history or meaning
>>
>>88343389
Monopoly’s appeal is that it’s made by Hasbro and is in every toy store, and has been for decades. You’ve played Monopoly, your parents have played Monopoly, your grandparents played Monopoly.
To most people Monopoly is what board games are, and to people more in the know with /tg/ shit board games are just something to fiddle around with as you talk to your friends. They’re not meant to be taken seriously like miniature wargames or RPGs are.
>>

>>88343442
>popular because its popular
I know it sounds dumb but that’s pretty much it. It became ubiquitous and most people don’t care enough to do anything differently.
>but I still expect some fucking decency and level from someone who enters this board, at least to have played and know the existance of shit that isn't monopoly
You vastly overestimate how much people here actually care too.
>>
>>88343478
You’d think it’d be the opposite. Board games, while not perfect, are literally better than they’ve ever been.
>>
>>88343529
true, but people don't care
its precisely because there' an overabundance of choice that make people not want to try new things

>"Man, i'm getting bored of playing catan over and over"
>"I also got seven wonders"
>"Oh cool, lets try that"

>"Man, i'm getting bored of playing catan over and over"
>"You could buy one out of the 300 games we got available at our store"
>"uuuuh, I'm fine"

This applies to almost everything in the current world actually
>>
>>88343630
I don’t know if it’s a lack of care as much as it is intimidation. People are terrified of making the “wrong” choice, and having a lot of options means there’s many more opportunities to make a mistake.
I suppose this can be partially remedied with diligent research but I’d say that’s where the lack of care comes in.
>>
May he Catan in Valhalla.

Its pretty boring gameplay wise, roll dice to receive resources from a random tile on the board, barter with the other players for resources you need and then expand/upgrade your settlements. It is however, one of the few games I can actually get my family to play, and I love how ultra competetive they get when playing it
>dad commits to a very conservative and slow but steady path, stubbornly refuses to deviate or back down from his stance or deals
>mom is a perfectionist worrywart, will spend way to long trying to perfectly optimize her plan, then cries in frustration when shit goes south a turn later
>middle sister plays fast and efficient, goes for the kill asap no nonsense, gets very angry when she inevitably gets ganged up/left out on because she doesnt negotiate well
>youngest sister who usually hates board games will spend the first half pretending not to care about the game, then suddenly pulls out all stops in regards to negotiation (blackmail, bribery, alliances, lying andbackstabbing, promises in and out of game, etc) when she realizes she‘s in a winning position, then she gloats and cackles like crazy if she manages to pull off the win
Fun times. Pretty sad he died, they even ran it on german prime time news.

>>88337792

Pretty well, the system kind of grows under our hands as it goes in these cases.

A recent issue has been balancing melee, ever since a newly joining character decided to ignore all guns in the gunbot game, and just smack shit with the axe. This is actually a bit too good, since melee offense and defense come from stats that also govern the ability to dodge bullets, and roll away from grenades. The GM can put her in trouble if it's necessary, but if we went up to the power ballpark of Third Generation Dolls or SF Ringleaders, this type of character would be clearly broken.
My character just got a Command Module, and it's looking like the specialization might need to be rewritten, because it encourages the user to give up their turn in order to buff someone who actually has points in shooting shit, which is kind of a boring way to play if it's all it does. I'd personally prefer something like a tactical point system, but it might be too much bloat for this kind of game.
Also 'what's stopping me from spending all my resources on frags and just throwing a cooked grenade every turn' has been a question every downtime, but I recall having that issue in many systems, like FFG Star Wars.

This system kind of came to be because we previously ran a Magical Girl system, which I'd like to publish one day when I consider it finished. The system had a core idea of the split between the magical and mundane, where the magical was unpredictable, powerful, and borderline suicidal, whereas the mundane was reliable and deterministic, but underpowered. One of the players took some ideas from that, and made a system that's like a big extension of the mundane side. So, despite appearances, this is a very deterministic Only War kinda system, and the math gets pretty tight, whereas RP and mental stuff (which was central in the meguca system) is largely left to the players. There's definitely a merit to simplicity, when I design a system, I just kinda keep adding more stuff.

That's definitely unexpected that melee would be too good - I'd have expected it to be too risky to do so in a game w/mobile artillery.
Re: frag-grenade spam, is there a limit to how many a given doll can carry? I wouldn't want to use encumbrance, but is there any good reason not to frag-spam if the resources are available? Collateral damage is the the main thing that comes to mind for me, but maybe the theater of operations makes that a non-issue.
It looks like there are a lot of options for the Command Module, shame it hasn't made it worth the loss of the turn. (Also, how good are hyper-efficicient memory and the skirmisher modes in practice?)

Do you keep any game logs?
Also, it'd definitely be interesting to see the origin system at some point - the split seems noteworthy.

We have some logs, though this is just a bit of it, the campaign is probably around 80 sessions at this point with PCs switching in and out.

Assault Artillery is fortunately not something PCs would be expected to fight (except maybe as a final boss), since it's pretty much the last word in warfare for 50 years. Melee does get completely walled by some enemies you would need high ordnance for, Mercedes has previously tried to axe a tank with not much success. Another part of it is that only enemies with individual intelligence or dolls under someone's command will actively evade attacks, target the squishies, and take time aiming. High defenses in everything and decent offense means enemies always need to coordinate to take that character down, which gets spooky if it becomes the norm.

Right now the frag grenade basically deals a bit too much damage, being a threat to armored enemies too, and most of the mooks won't have the presence of mind to roll away. I guess if we start meeting enemies with command protocols who are better at dodging grenades, it will be less viable. Which ties into Skirmisher Formation being obviously the best choice at the moment, which is why I deliberately didn't take it, because it would make the melee char immortal. Lending people my Processing attribute results in giving extra actions to the damage dealers which they aren't really supposed to have, and stuff like taking full aim shots within a single turn, which is busted enough.

GM here

the entire Command spec was written very early in game design and at the time it was expected that people would need to spend more DM on Interfacing with the environment and EW defense which is what parallel processing was supposed to be for but things didn't materialize that way

Grenades are strong but relatively expensive and compete for a limited resource pool at the start of every mission; lots of grenades = few to no ammo and less for modules or equipment.

Is it kinda like when George Michael died and the news story quickly got swept under the rug because they didn't want the public hearing how wide his asshole was at the time?
