"Who named what a National Park?" edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE.
EXPEDITION - an ~1870s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood storm hellscape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, fight each other for victory.
A campaign mode is planned, and currently in the works. (you) are encouraged to contribute.

3 versions of the rules exist, TWO of which have been playtested:
>1e - proof of concept, recently updated with unit stats
>2e - lead by 2e anon, playtests started, ~75% done. Campaign system is developed here.
>3e - Replaced 4e because it died. Spearheaded by 3e anon, needs more playtests, rules present in the doc

>What can I do?
Shitpost, meme, get comfy. Read over the docs to settle in.
Familiarize yourself with rules and plan some playtests.
Contribute if you have ideas. Give feedback on contributions if you don't.

> TQ : Planning on adding Smoke to the main rule book, any other environmental effects that could be added? Ideas for anomalies?

Proposal for a new unit template.
Also, I thought about using these profiles as a sort of baseline, balance them each at 10 Silver, any lore reason why a Troupe de la Marine should be better than a BAP (beside my inborn chauvinism)?
>>
>>91857599
Will the new profiles get their weapons for free? If not it's a pretty big downgrade for BAP.

So, to explain a little bit more in details.
The BAP started costed at 5 or 6 I think, and served as a sort of baseline (even tho, if you think about it, with the Line Fire rule, it could get really good fire). This with time led to the price range being fairly constrictive toward the lower end. So I'm thinking of putting it to around 10 for a baseline unit and cost it from there.
This is also with a generic bump in movement, only the BAP didn't get one because between Accuracy 6 Line Fire and the support it is way more accurate than even the AmexCorp at Accuracy 7 with Skirmisher.
I also brought down the Armour of all Colonials to 0 except for the BAP's funny hat, no clue if that actually provides any protection, let me know if it should be 0 instead.
Thinking of bringing the AmexCorp Discpline down by 1, let me know.
Also, let me know if "nested" rules like the new Line Fire bothers you too much, I don't like it but it does save space. I don't like when there's dozens of them but if its limited I don't mind it so much.
Will also add the Silver costs to the loadout sections.
>>
>>91857625
Base recruitment cost would be adjusted to 100-150/200/300, in the end it would remain at pretty much the same value.
>>
>>91857690
>I also brought down the Armour of all Colonials to 0 except for the BAP's funny hat, no clue if that actually provides any protection, let me know if it should be 0 instead.
The Pith helmet was just to shield from the sun, but it was better than a regular hat at general protection. Worse than a Pickelhaube though.
Also, were the Icelandic guard supposed to have the armor they did? I always imagined it as some sort of cuirassier deal.

Atlan warband kitbashing update!
I finished a Spring Gunner, hopefully a repeater crossbow isn't too far fetched from whatever a "spring gun" is supposed to be.
I got a Warmaster mostly done, just gotta finish the head and some greenstuff fixes and I'll post it. A Hospitalier is next on the chopping block after that.
I didn't want to start painting stuff until I had a few models ready, to keep a uniform look, so the Immortals are still just primed.
Should have a (still shitty) pic tomorrow morning.
>>
>IDEA I HAD:
It's been brought up a couple of times that Agartha is not meant to be exclusively a "war" focused wargame. For example the victory conditions of a campaign, giving VP for mining materials or finding knowledge, that sort of thing.
It follows then that not every encounter needs to be between the armies of the two or more players of a campaign. Would it not be more fitting of the themes and typical to colonial adventure stories to have players fight stuff like packs of cave beasts or even landslides?
The idea was inspired from last thread's NPC rules preview where a player could control an NPC, why not have it so that there are full blown encounters of this sort, with one player temporarily controlling something like a pack of lemurs and only one player expedition list involved?
I'll try to write up a prototype maybe, but I think it could work. Especially since it would help to really hammer in the hostile nature of Agartha, like the whole inner world was against your efforts.

Oh 100%!
You don't really even need to make it a different "game mode" so much, you could just whip out a roster and "recruitment" rules for your wild horde, and some special rules to represent how that kind of critters attack.
1e had a "Lemur" faction which allowed you to do that iirc.

Despite the Khan and Mother Unknown’s frequent visit and hands on approach to ruling, New Mu cities in the 4th often goes years or decades without a visit from Old Mu representatives. The difficulties this provokes in unifying Mu’s operation has recently been evidenced by the New Mu Diving Initiative. War against Atlan began to turn around against Mu’s favour in the late 1850s, which corresponded with the Khan’s prolonged absence from the area. As a result, leaders from coastal cities around the Dalai Sea reached out to one another and sought to establish a route to the 7th that would allow for fast communication between the colonies and the “motherland”.
The settlements of the Dalai Sea nearly all share the common legend that the depth of the small underground ocean inexplicably reach further than the floor of the 5th Layer itself. This is perhaps why so many of those cities and villages observe strict sacrifices to the Sea as a form of obligation toward Old Mu. The leaders of the nascent Diving Initiative were intrigued by the validity of these folk legends, and with the typical Mu disregard for human life, sought ways to send explorers down and back. The lucky Divers were the ones outfitted with technology stolen or replicated from Atlantis, but this was unfortunately a minority of them. Most were sent down with little else than an air buoy and a few Morlocks towing them down, entirely helpless against the crushing depths or its predators.
>>
>>91862997
Very few came back. The project was declared a failure, however technically it was never established if the Divers did accomplish their task. They simply will not speak of the experience, under any circumstances, including torture. As to the Old Mu’s nobility, their opinion on the Initiative is unknown, but even so it still influenced greatly New Mu politics, since almost every backers of the project was since murdered, likely in the belief that their failure was a sign of the Khan’s or the Mother’s displeasure.
Unknown to all, the Divers did manage to contact Old Mu Nobility, in the form of its monstrous Navy. Attempts by the leviathans at greeting the Divers is what drove them mad in the first place.

What's her angle? Why help the Indians throw off the British yoke, then lead the Scots into the depths? Do Lemurians just hate English people in particular?
>>
>>91871192
A few possibilities.
She could be a La Ombre double-agent playing a very long game. Anything that hurt the Brits would generally be to Napoleon's advantage. Perhaps at some point along the way she truly switched sides to Malcolm's.
It could also be that she has a specific issue with the Brits having access to Prediction Engines. Maybe she foresaw that i would be really bad if Hyperboreans Mechanicals got their hands on one? So everything she's doing is part of a 300 step plan to get Babbage killed and all existing Engines destroyed?

I always figured it was just the Lemurians trying to trade one ruler of empire for another. After all, why bother conquering a bunch of tiny substates when there's a big imperial domain right there to be subverted to your aims? India is not so much free as under new, if more subtle management.
Other explanations include kill or be killed mentality, vague prophecies about what the Eternal Anglo will do if left unchecked, and a possible millennia old grudge held against ancient Britons, or maybe the Saxons. Perhaps old Wyrd traditions were actually true, and the Lemurians are trying to stamp out the last vestiges of a rival prophecy tradition or stop a new tradition from arising with the Engines like that other anon mentioned.
Potentially all of the above. Possibly the opposite of all the above, where Lemurians are secretly trying to strengthen the UK as much as possible via a sort of trial by fire, but that seems loopy and unlikely even for them.

Perhaps it was her who planted the dream of the Deluge in Malcolm's mind. Or perhaps she only learned of it after perusing that highlander's thoughts.
>Perhaps at some point along the way she truly switched sides to Malcolm's.
Personally, I rather like the idea that the Lost Men are, in general, a very loose collection of souls until you get to the deepest inner circle. Malcolm, Jayanyati, even Bleg (Though the Ookian warlord will complain the whole time) are truly united in their purpose.

Alright, I tried giving it stats a couple of times on paper but nothing really stuck right.
The idea is for a scenario wherein it's a single army vs a natural phenomena, in this case a cavequake. The trick is that the quake itself is treated like an army, or maybe a single unit.
Here were the three units (or powers) it would have:
>Fissure
Every non-wall tile moved across by this unit is converted to a pit tile. Enemy nits caught must make an evasion test to jump clear or fall inside. And group of tiles surrounded by pits in this manner are also converted into pits. Wall tiles are converted into difficult rubble terrain.
Movement allowance/direction may be semi-randomized or not, not sure yet. Might also spawn creatures from lower layers on a roll.
>Rockslide
Pick [x] wall tiles or rubble tiles within [x] hexes of a wall. Any hex adjacent to these is converted to difficult terrain rubble. Any unit within the tiles when they are converted is buried, and taxes an [X] wound each round until a labour test is made to excavate them. if a large unit is only partially buried it is immobilized but takes no damage.
>Stalagtite
Select one hex, rolling scatter. A stalagmite drops there, evasion test or two grevious wounds for any unit within. Roll 1d10, on a 1 it was a large stalagmite, replace nearby tiles with wall hexes and roll to spawn Sky People Units.

The overall idea is to let two players in a campaign or someone in solo have battles against things other than wildlife or Player armies since conquering natural phenomena is half the fun of a good expedition story. Other ideas include wildfire armies, floods, and maybe even one for anomalies.

Oh that's really cool. I thought the "tremors" scenario could be something similar where you spawn "quake" zones at the beginning of the turn and then roll at the end of it to see if its a landslide, the floor opening into a pit or whatever else, but I never thought about having one player be the natural phenomena. I'll try to think of mechanics to make it work.

> "We were alone, in the deep solitude of a beautiful moonlit night. Suddenly a dog leaped out from under the cloak of a corpse. He came running toward us and then, almost immediately afterward ran back to his dead master, howling piteously. He licked the soldier's unfeeling face, then ran back to us — repeating this several times. He was seeking both help and revenge. I don't know whether it was the mood of the moment, or the place, or the time, or the action in itself, or what — at any rate, it's a fact that nothing I saw on any other battlefield ever produced a like impression on me. I stopped involuntarily to contemplate this spectacle. This man, I said to myself, has friends, perhaps. He may have some at the camp, in his company — and here he lies, abandoned by all except his dog. What a lesson nature was teaching us through an animal.

> "What a strange thing is man! How mysterious are the workings of his sensibility! I had commanded in battles that were to decide the fate of a whole army, and had felt no emotion. I had watched the execution of manoeuvres that were bound to cost the lives of many among us, and my eyes had remained dry. And suddenly I was shaken, turned inside out, by a dog howling in pain!"

Idea concerning keywords & unit types
The distinction between worker and soldier units has always been a bit awkward. I was thinking about reworking the division to be
> Leaders
> Characters & Heroes
> Followers (This would include Troops, Elites Workers and Specialists)
> Special Units (everything else)
and the Troop/Worker division would be reworked as keywords for special rules. Thinking of also renaming Troops to Soldiers and have it be specifically for units which have a military background.
Also, circling around a lot on this one, but should I rework in the (Inquisitive/Greedy)(Imperialist/Exploration)(Civilized/Barbaric) axis from the compass? This could be done a number of ways, either as keywords (either as rules callbacks like "select a Greedy character, do x", or as values in a campaign event "Your expedition comes upon X, if you have more Greedy models, do Y, if you have more Inquisitive models, do Z" )

Beyond compass completion there's also role completion to think of. Neither France or UK have any low cost workers, so we might want to rectify this if anyone's got any suggestion.

> Foreign Legion is already in as the FFL, but might need rework

I must have missed the threads where that was coming together, if it did happen.

I'm pretty sure there was, since I made a jak for it and everything. I can't remember what happened to it, might have been unfinished.

I wonder what he's thinking. You rebel against the Emperor you put in power because he's getting rid of the Samurai and importing Western culture and next thing you know you're underground surrounded by dinosaurs and all your men are trying to ride them.

"Man I bet it would be sick to ride that dinosaur"

Relatable.
A mark of a good leader.

2e anon reporting in. Something came up so I won't be able to finish up and post the rulebook tonight, it shouldn't be later than tomorrow tho.

>I wonder what he's thinking.
Real talk though,
Its likely calm, simple strategy. This man came from a very long Iaido tradition. This should inform their combat strategy: Fast ambushes, no retreat, few if any prisoners or survivors.
Fights with Satsuma should begin and end in only a few turns.

2e anon reporting in,
the night was fruitful, there will be a few sections unfinished and unusable (some of the scenarios), but they won't take long individually to complete. I only have a few of the Hostiles to finish and I should be good to post. Hopefully unless any disaster happen it'll be tonight.
Off to sleep.

Here we go. I wanted to have it more finished than that but it is still playable outside of the scenarios which needs more work (Tribal Village should be usable).
I added Elevation in the terrain rules, its just a Hex type for each terrain, rule is just you get to ignore 1 hex worth of cover, I just thought it made sense but if there's a reason not too let me know. Also, "electrical" as a special rule stand in until we get to the Arc Rangers (or whatever the name end up being).
Feedback is, as always, very much appreciated.
I'm going to start moving toward the clean up for UK, France and USA now, but I will try to also alternate with completing a scenario or other part every now and then.

I already see a lot of little things that have been changed, great work there
. If the starts align I might be able to pull together a test game this weekend to try these out.

Good luck!
I made this tonight as a proposal for a new template for Leaders. This frees up some space for a lore blurb at the top, if people want to start suggesting those.
Leaders rarely have Common Special Rules so it made more sense to put the equipment there.
Change wise I thought this would be a good starting point for balancing. They are all Leaders which hope to win by influencing the battle indirectly rather than violently, and while the Always a Prince ability on Charles is really good it goes against the general French gist of high maneuver warfare, and the rest of his abilities are definitely not as good as the other two.
On Grant I debuffed the Ambush Strategist to granting just Nimble instead of Dodging & +1 Acc +1 Evasion, because USA honestly doesn't need more Acc, it already often shoots at 7~8 without any issues and Commander of the Armies to be area dependent (but now it affects more models).
I added Dogged/Tough, this will be the case for most Leaders/VIP, so in the event some cheeky bastard decides to Prophesy you into headshot range turn 1, you at least get some option to save your Leader.
I feel both Cunningham and Charles could use some more flavour, so if you feel like suggesting some rules go ahead.

Oh, also, I again bumped Movement a bit and lowered Armour to the new Colonial standard of 0.

We are mentioning Satsuma a lot in these threads lately. Should we move ahead and make a faction finally? Would any anon want to try his hand at it?

>love how its just a dude with an eyepatch
That was in the original compass! I was looking for "giant with an eyepatch" but nothing better came up. Also I thought we could say that they have that same genetic defect that some sheep do that make them develop actual cyclopism if the mother eat the wrong type of grass while pregnant. The first one spotted was just a normal dude with an eyepatch, the second was a rather rare case of cyclopism deformity and the name just stuck...?

I know barely anything about Japanese history, but I do know that Ninjas should be involved with whatever we do.
Even if it's just stapling Lemurian martial arts rules onto a unit and calling it a day.

Gonna go ahead and make a new thread while I have time:
