With your free hand you pat down your pockets, looking for something a baby might like.

Come to think of it, you've never really checked these. There's a lump there that you've never noticed, so you reach in and pull it out. The pocket is a little tight...

Your hand comes out with a small ring that has several little metal things on it.

"What is that?" Ilica asks.
"I dunno" You say. "It was in my pocket"

The little metal things are all kind of jagged and oddly shaped, but they aren't sharp. You shake the little ring causing it to jingle, which catches Hella's attention.

Hella lets go of your nose, and reaches out to try and grab the metal things.

"That did the trick" Vance says.
"It did" You say, keeping the metal things out of arms reach of the baby. "Can I let her have these?"
"Sure, just watch her to make sure she doesn't swallow them" Daniella says.

You shrug and hand the little ring off to Hella, who takes them and shakes them while giggling with glee.

"Awwww" Ilica says. "Can I hold her?"

You shrug and lift Hella off your lap. She looks confused for a moment, until you set her down on Ilica.

Ilica looks absolutely star struck, as she slowly and gently brings her hands up to hold the baby. Hella smiles and puts the keys in her mouth.

"Looks like somebody likes kids" Daniella says.

Ilica giggles and starts patting Hella's hea, before looking around and straightening up. "Uhh... I was just uhh..." She says.

As she fumbles for an answer, someone brings in some food.

"Finally" Tian says. "I was starting to wonder where... Ari... is..."

You look around, and you don't see Ariadne.

Tian sighs. "And god help you if I look up and see her building a web" She says.
"Uhh... you may not want to look up for another 5-10 minutes then" You hear Ariadne's voice from above.

Tian covers her face with her hand. "I'm really sorry about her, guys" She says.
"That's alright. We've had a few hunters who were arachnids" Vance says. "Cleaner's actually have tools for getting rid of webs"

"You can't get rid of it! This one's gonna look awesome!" Ariadne says.
"Yes they can" Tian says. "And you're going to help"
"Awww maaaan" Ariadne says.

You look around as someone puts a plate down in front of you...

"Seen about 5 of 'em, yeah" Vance says. "Never been near one, the magic in those places is too strong"

"What are they like?" You ask.
"Well... they weren't much to look at back then" He says. "But the power they put out is incredible. When I was young, I tried my hardest to get into the seeping pit. Nothing. Couldn't even get close"

"The seeping pit?" You ask.
"The dark ruins" He says. "Down south. It's a huge hole in the ground. If you try to get close, the darkness overflows and drags you away. I managed to get a look in though..."

"What did you see?" You ask.
"Endless" He says. "Like there was no bottom"
"Where'd you find them?" You ask.

"Well, Howling tower is north of here. The flowing pool is in the southern isles" He says. "Seeping pit is on the continent south of here, deep in the jungle"
"What about on the other continents?" You ask
"I've only seen 2 out there" He says. "The Shining spires are..."

He pats his pockets, looking for something. "Where did I leave that blasted thing..."

"That! Yeah, I must've left it there" Vance says, as he pushes himself to his feet.

"I threw it out" Daniella says.
"YOU WHAT?!" Vance shouts, as he shoots to his feet. "I carried that thing for 40 years and you threw it out?!?"

"Kidding~" Daniella says. "It's still there, want me to grab it?"

Vance leans over the table. "God, young lady don't scare me like that" He says, as he collapses back into his chair.

"If what your Felid friend says is true, you should get one for yourself" Teague says. "I keep one on me whenever I go out. It's nowhere near as filled as Ol' Vance's, but I've put a few miles into it"

You nod and consider it, before turning to Ilica. "What do you think?" You ask.
Ilica is not paying attention. Instead she is playing with Hella, and you could swear that you can hear her purring...

"But?" You ask.
"I think we can make an exception for you, lad" Vance says. "Consider it a favour, in return for getting my grand daughter here safely"

His grand daughter...? Oh right, big Hella.

"Where did big Hella go anyway?" You ask.
"She left to go look after Gabriella and Michael" Vance says. "Come to think of it, I probably should too. 3 kids, 9 grandkids, and only one of them came out a boy. Somebody has to make sure that lad grows up strong"

"I think I'm more than capable of that" Teague says.
"Don't think I've forgotten what a runt you were when you first joined, Teague" Vance says. "Took everything we had to whip this one into shape, but we managed"

"Oh Yuu, so much to learn..." Ilica says.

And now you've forgotten what you were going to say... might as well look at the map.

It opens easily, and unfolds to be a lot larger than you thought it would be. The paper is sturdy, feeling more like cloth than regular paper, and the map covers a sizeable portion of the table...

And it looks oddly familiar...

You look around the map, and Vance's notes are everywhere. In some places there's a few words, some spots just have an odd marking on them...

"What are these?" You ask.
"Those are why maps are standard for all recruits" Teague says. "Whenever you go out to hunt something big, the claw is where you encountered it, the X is where you killed it, and the O is where the lair is, if you found it"

"There are a lot of O's with X's in them" You say.
"That's how Vance hunts" Teague says. "Track it back to its lair, and kill it there. That way you know where the nest is, whether there are more, what it's been eating... you learn a lot about a monster from its nest"

"They don't have children?" You ask.
"Monsters spawn from excess mana, remember?" Ilica asks. "They aren't born"
"Right... I forgot about that" You say.

You turn your attention back to the map, looking for the ruins...

You coordinate with Teague to find and identify them, based on what Vance scribbled. While his notes are interesting, he never actually names or describes any of the places he's been to...

After a few minutes, you manage to sort out the ruins from the other spots. You find the Shining Spires (Yellow), The Howling Tower (Green), The Flowing Pool (Light blue), The Rising Mountain (Orange), and the Seeping Pit (Purple).

"Wow" You say.
"So why are you so interested in the ruins?" Teague asks.

"Well, the empire wants its researchers getting the first crack, before any explorers or adventurers show up" Teague says, before leaning in and continuing in a hush. "But uhh... between you and me. Word is they still can't get in"

"Figures" Ilica says. "Same stuff that's stopping them?"
"Yep" Teague says. "Wind current's too strong, and they're trying everything"
"Yikes" Ilica says. "You sure you wanna go there, Yuu?"

"I can get in" You say.
"You can?" Teague asks.
"Maybe" You say. "I won't know unless I try"
"Well, that's... an attitude" Teague says. "I guess we'll see if that pans out for you..."

You nod and finish eating. Now that dinner is done, you should probably get back to the castle... you know that Derrick wanted to keep training. But then, you are learning a lot here...

"Why?" You ask.
"I dunno" Teague says. "Never really got it myself. But I guess there's a different reason for everybody. Some serve out of loyalty, some might be afraid of what will happen if they rebel, some might have nothing else, some might just do it for the pay"

"You're probably looking at a majority for that last one" Ilica says.
"Not a believer in principle, are we?" Teague asks.
Ilica shrugs. "I haven't met too many people who would give up their paycheck for a chance at being executed" She says.

"Well, I like to believe that there are still good men out there" Teague says. "At least, moreso than you do"

Ilica stands up and streatches out. "I like to expect the worst" Ilica says. "At least that way when I'm surprised, I'm pleasantly surprised"
"A pessimist?" Teague asks.
"Yyyyup" Ilica says. "We should go say goodbye and head back. You ready to go?"

"That's okay" You say, as something occurs to you. "Hang on, you said that Derrick has 2 heads. Where's the second one"

You sigh, and nod to Ilica. Then you finish saying your goodbyes and head out. You make it to the front doors before someone stops you.

"Hold on lad" Vance says, holding something out to you.
"What's up?" You ask.
"You forgot this" He says, handing you a large folded paper, and your keys.

"Thanks, I completely forgot these" You say. "Is this the map?"
"Aye" He says. "I took the liberty of marking down the ruins, for when you find them, as well as Locke for your starting point"

"Thanks" You say. "You really think I'll get to them all?"
"I think you can do it if you try" He says. "You're a little rough around the edges, but if anyone can cut you right, it'd be Altea"

He pats your shoulder. "Now go get 'em" He says.

You nod, and turn to leave. Once you're outside, you put the map in your back pocket, and the keys back in the pocket they came from, and head off in...

As you walk through the streets, nobody really seems to pay you too much attention. Which is nice in its own way. People paying attention to you always seems to lead to teasing or assault, so it's nice to go unnoticed.

Pip and Lulu head inside, so you follow along.

"What's the draft?" You ask as you walk after them. "And why would I have to dodge it?"
"Conscription" Lulu says. "Where they basically force you to join the army"

"Oh..." You say. "But I want t do this"
"It was a joke" Pip says.
You stroke your chin as you try to think of how it would be funny... "I don't get it" You say.
"That's alright, it's not a very funny joke" Lulu says.

"I get paid to fight, not crack wise" Pip says. "You want quality comedy material, it'll cost ya"
"I want my money back" Lulu says.
"I just said that you don't pay me" Pip says.
"I know" Lulu replies. "That was a joke"

"I don't get it" You say.
"I was suggesting that she should be paying us to have to suffer through her horrible jokes" Lulu says.
"Oh..." You reply. "Can we get back to training?"

"Ouch" Pip says. "Solid burn there, Yuuster"
"Yuuster?" You ask.
"That's you now" Pip says.
"I don't like it" You say.
"Too bad" Pip says.

You enter the courtyard, and find Derrick, Rhea, and Marybell waiting for you...

Not wanting to hear any more bad attempts at comedy, you hurry over to them. Now that you've eaten and had some time to cool off, you'll-

"Alright, who's up?" Rhea asks.

"I'll go next" Marybell says.
"You will?" Derrick asks. "I was gonna continue where we left off..."

"I'm okay with this" You say.
"Alright then. We can continue tomorrow" Derrick says. "You're up, Marybell"

Marybell steps forward, and pulls a bow off of her back.

"So... what am I doing?" You ask.

Marybell smiles. It starts as a pleasant smile, but quickly becomes menacing...

"Now, you run" She says.
"Just... run?" You ask.

She pulls out an arrow, nocks it, and draws. "Run"
Your eyes widen, and you do just that. When you get a few steps away, you hear an arrow whistle by your ear.

"You'll have to be faster than that!" Marybell shouts.

You pump your legs, going as quickly as you can around the courtyard. But you hear the distinct sound of hoofbeats behind you...

So you whip off your cloak and your hat, and you run.

And you run.

And you run.

...

When you think you've run enough, you start to slow down... until another arrow whizzes past your ear, spurring you on faster.

After running for what feels like forever, your legs start to burn, your lungs start to burn, your everything stats to burn... but Marybell doesn't seem to want to let up.

Even so, you slow down as your legs truly start to tire...

"Keep those legs moving, unless you want some pretty feathers!" Marybell shouts.
"Marybell, I think that's enou-" Derrick says.

Another arrow whips by your head, and you hear a startled gasp.

"Just what the hell do you think you're doing?" Emi shouts.

The hoofbeats stop. "Training" Marybells says.
"No training I've ever seen involves shooting at people" Emi says.
"It's motivation" Marybell says.
"It's cruel" Emi replies.

"So stop me" Marybell says.

You hear Marybell stomping her hooves as you collapse.

"Oi, Yuu?" Derrick calls out.

You hear the sound of Derrick running over to you, and Marybell yelping. Derrick turns you over.

"You okay?" He asks.
"I still have legs, right?" You ask.
Derrick chuckles. "Yeah, you still have legs" He says.
"Awesome... Is it okay if I take a break?" You ask.

Derrick turns to look at Marybell, then looks back down at you. "I think now's a good time..." He says.

You lift your head to see what Derrick was looking at, and see Marybell on the ground, tangled up in Emi's tail...

"Yeah... good hustle man" He says. "I think next time we'll be laying out some actual ground rules..."
"That sounds good" You say.

You managed to outrun Marybell, under threat of death, for a much longer time than anyone else felt comfortable with.
Your speed has increased by 1
