“Please, like a few bruises are going to stop me.”

Ken carefully folds a shirt and places it neatly inside a rucksack.

“Are you sure you don't want to rest a little?” you ask. “I think we were all pretty badly beat up yesterday.”

Ken shakes his head. “Ryoji, I went toe-to-toe with Taka Doi. That jerk stood on my head and beat the crap out of me, and now we're supposed to be working with that class? If I'm going to relax, I need this camping trip. We all do. Now, fill up your bag.”

You sigh and start packing. Ken's adamant on going through with this, it seems. It's probably the exact kind of stress-relief that he needs after everything that went down yesterday. Ken's pretty pissed of at the idea of having to work with those bloodthirsty psychos in Class 3... everyone is, yourself included. These are the same guys who were hunting you don't like a pack of lions, and now you're supposed to help them hunt someone else? Yamato's promised to keep his goons in check, prevent a fiasco like the great Civil War of Dark Gate Academy from happening again... but you don't trust that guy at all. Sure, he saved you from Raiden, but he's still the head of those lunatics.

“I know this little field by a lake just on the outskirts of town that we can set up camp,” Ken explains. “The place is beautiful, and not too far from the school. We're all going to have a hell of a time.”

“Who is the 'we', by the way?” you ask. “Who exactly did you invite?”

Ken pauses. “Well, let's see... I invited all of the DJD, I invited Akemi, Hoshi, Hikaru, Isamu, Nanami, Sora, Raiden's invite has been revoked obviously...”

“Where are they keeping that guy, anyway?”

Ken shrugs. “Who knows with Class 3? Probably in their personal dungeon beneath the school.”

You laugh, “I know you're trying to exaggerate, but after what I've seen from this school, I wouldn't be surprised. You invite anyone else?”

Ken thinks. “Now that I think about it, I pretty much invited everyone in class. I'm sure only a few are up for it, though.”

“Everyone?” you raise an eyebrow.

“Well... I considered inviting Saki, but then decided against it.”

“Why?”

Ken shakes his head. “Don't get me wrong, Saki's cool... but I considered the possibility of you and her having a minor disagreement over something ridiculous, which then explodes into a full-on argument that ruins the relaxed atmosphere of the trip. I hate to say, the odds are pretty high.”

You cross your arms. “That's not showing a lot of faith in us, Ken. We argue all the time, but that's just how we are. It's not like we can't be in the same room or something.”

Ken raises an eyebrow. “Really? Do you think I should invite Saki, then? And can you promise the two of you will be able to keep cool and relaxed without yelling at each-other?"

Ken nods. "Okay then, I trust you enough to try."

The two of your ready your bags and step out of the dorm room. As you do, you spot a certain girl exiting her room as well. "Oh, there she is!" Ken exclaims as he makes his way over to Saki.

Saki eyes the two of you and the large bags you're carrying. "Hey, what's going on? You two wouldn't be trying to run away, would you?"

Ken shakes his head. "Nah. We're going for a camping trip. We were actually wondering if you'd like to come with."

Saki pauses and squints her eyes, suspicious. "Really? This isn't some kind of trick, is it?"

"No, we want as many people to come along," Ken replies. "It'll be a fun day out."

Saki pauses. "You know... that actually does sound like fun! But... I don't really have a tent or anything..."

There's a brief silence before Ken gets an idea. "Don't worry, you can share ours!"

Wait, what? You didn't agree to this!

"Really? That's real nice of you!" Saki exclaims. "I'll get some stuff ready, and I'll meet you guys outside!"

As Saki steps back into her room, you place a hand on Ken's shoulder. "Ken, aren't you forgetting something?"

"What's that?" he asks.

"You said our tent can only just about fit the two of us in there, right?"

"Yeah."

"Okay... now add a third person. How much space do we have?"

Ken pauses. "Oh... damn, I didn't think of that. I mean... we could manage to fit three people in the tent, at the very most. It'll be cramped, but it's do-able."

Dammit Ken... he's making it real hard to avoid that whole angry yelling thing. Gotta remain chilled out...

The two of you wait outside the main dorm building for Saki to show up. She walks out in a pair of loose-fitting pants and a hoodie. You're so accustomed to seeing her in her immaculate school uniform all the time, you don't think you're ever going to get used to her in normal people clothes.

As the three of you set off into town, Saki walks by your side and leans in. "I hate to ask... but is there I reason I wasn't invited until the last minute?"

You shrug. "Ken was worried about me and you arguing the whole trip," you explain, realising that no lie was more reasonable than the truth.

"Oh... well as long as you don't do anything wrong, I don't see that being a problem!" Saki laughs.

Well... that'll be a problem, because you're definitely going to do at least three things that Saki find morally objectionable within the next hour.

"Okay, here's my solution..." you begin.

Saki pauses, considering it. "I don't know, I feel like you'd try to abuse the truce by doing everything you can to set me off..."

Saki pouts. "You're never going to let that go, are you?"

"Fine..." Saki sighs in a defeatist tone, "A truce. Just for today. But if you do anything wrong today, I'm going to let you hear about it first thing tomorrow!"

"That's a fair deal," you reply, shaking her hand.

The three of you arrive in town, as Ken leads you all out to the field in question. Ken sets his rucksack on the grass, and gets towards setting up the tent.

"Do you need any help with that?" you ask.

Ken shakes his head. "Nah, I can handle this myself. You should use this time to look around. This place is great, I'm sure you'll find something you like. Head into town, check out the pond, whatever fits your fancy."

"I meanwhile will be sitting down with a good book and willingly turning a blind eye to your delinquency," Saki explains. "You can thank me later."

You feel like giving her a wise-ass remark, but you suppose that would be breaking the truce. You stretch out your arms and look around your surroundings.

You've seen the town itself before, and you don't want to stick around the camp lest the urge to tease Saki about something become too high. Ken talked about how pretty this lake is supposed to be, so why not check it out? Skip a few stones across it's surface? That's one way to relax after the stress of yesterday. Yep, nothing like a reflective time by the lake to take your mind off being hunted by a monster, then captured, tied to a chair in a shed and threatened with a gun to your head. Damn... that was all so messed up.

You walk down a small hilly patch of grass in order to stand by the bank of the lake. Damn, Ken was right, it is pretty damn beautiful. Pure water, made all the more pretty as it reflects the clear blue sky above. You don't get much time to skipping stones, however, as you spot someone else. Not by the lake... but rather, on it. A girl seemingly standing on the surface of the water. With some kind of device strapped on her back. As you look closer, you recognise the girl and your eyes widen.

"Akemi?!" you call out, grabbing her attention. Unfortunately, this also breaks her focus, as she clumsily falls backwards into the lake.

Shit. You quickly remove your jacket, planning to swim out to save her, but you soon realise there's no need. Akemi bursts from the water with the device strapped to her back, she floats towards the bank, as you see the device is some kind of homemade jetpack. You heard Akemi had a way with machines despite her absent minded-nature, but that is impressive.

As she lands next to you, she quickly begins to cough up water and removes the jetpack. "Oh... everything's all wet..." she mumbles, disappointed.

Akemi beams with pride. "Yep, I sure did... though I guess it needs work. When I heard about this camping trip, I decided to come out to the lake early to test it out!"

You nod your head. "I gotta say, I'm real impressed... and really surprised."

Akemi puffs her cheeks. "Aw, everyone says they're surprised when they find out I make these things! Why is that?"

You very heavily resist the urge to reply with "Because you're the class' resident dumbass." Thankfully, Akemi begins to remove her clothes before you can blurt it out.

Wait... you aren't thankful for that at all! "Whoah, what the hell are you doing?!"

Akemi looks at you confused as she removes her school shirt, revealing a small white bra underneath. "My clothes are all wet! I don't want to catch a cold!"

"You could have warned me first!" you yell back, turning your head away.

"I didn't see any need to... I've seen you without clothes. Twice!" Akemi laughs, working on her skirt.

Dammit, why do you always end up in these ridiculous situations? You silently pray that nothing happens to make this situation even worse...

"Ryoji? Is there something wrong?" you hear Saki's voice from above the hilly patch of grass.

God hates you.

"I heard some yelling," she explains, her voice getting closer, "I just want to make sure everythings..."

As she reaches the top of the hill, her eyes bear witness to the sight before her. She looks at you, then looks at Akemi, then back at you with a death-glare. Finally, she takes a deep breath, remembering the truce. "This... is fine," she mutters, through gritted teeth. "Absolutely fine. I'm going to go back to my book now, and forget ever seeing this."

You sigh and reach into your bag, throwing Akemi an old hoodie. "Put something on... for my own sanity."

"You got it!" Akemi smiles, as she pulls the hood over her head. It's a good thing she's so much shorter than you, as the hoodie covers most of her body. She really doesn't seem to grasp just how pissed Saki is going to be with you tomorrow.

The two of you return to the camp to find a new arrival failing miserably at setting up her tent. "Yargh! This land ship is no good!" Nanami shouts, disappointed.

"No wonder, it's covered in holes..." Ken says, examining the mess of fabric. "What happened?"

"I wanted to carve a Jolly Roger into the side..." Nanami pouts. "I don't think it turned out so well... Now I have no tent! I'll have to sleep in the dirt, it seems."

"Don't be silly Nanami..." Ken begins. Oh, he better not say it. "You can sleep in our tent."

Dammit Ken. Dammit all to hell.

"You mean it?" Nanami's smiles. "That's fantastic!"

Ken shakes his head. "Don't worry, it was just Nanami."

"Just Nanami? Ken, that's a whole other person-worth of space. The tent barely holds two!"

Ken shrugs. "Yeah, but... Saki's small, so really we're only trying to fit three and a half people in there. We can manage it."

Ken then eyes Akemi. "Oh hey Akemi, do you have a tent?"

"Don't even think about it," you mutter.

Akemi shakes her head. "No, but it should be arriving real soon. Hoshi is bringing a tent along big enough to fit five people!"

You smirk. "Well, that solves our problems. Once Hoshi gets here, Saki and Nanami can hop into their tent, and the two of us can relax like kings in our tent!"

Ken smiles. "See? It all works out in the end."

As you pull your bedroll from your rucksack and spread it out inside Ken's tent, you see Hoshi arriving, bringing along her tent... and six other people. As Hoshi hikes up the small grassy hill that the campsite rests upon, a giant bag being carried on her back, you see Isamu, Akio, Hikaru, Sayeka, Satomi, and Chihiro all arriving in tow. None of them are carrying bags.

You let out a huge sigh as Hoshi drops her bag onto the ground next to your tent. "I-I'm sorry for asking... " she mumbles, "But more people came along than I'd thought... my tent might be a little cramped, but if it's okay with you... could you squeeze some people into yours?"

You place your head in your hands and silently scream.

As everyone gets unpacked, they all begin to run off in different direction, all with different things in mind. As you look around, you realise you don't really have any plans for the day, other than 'camping.' You've got some free time to decide, but what the hell are you going to do?

You realise there's probably some stuff in town you could probably try to pick up. A new pack of smokes, maybe a little cat treat for that little runt as thanks for saving you the other day, and hopefully, you might be able to find another tent you can buy for what little cash you have.

"R-ryoji... you're going into town?" Hoshi asks, as she sees you walk off in that direction.

"Yeah, I am."

Hoshi pauses for a moment, hesitant. "Well... t-then I'll go too!"

"O...kay?" you reply. "Hurry up then, I want to make this quick."

The two of you walk down the hill and start on the path towards the town. You walk in silence for the most part, unsure of what to say. After all, you've barely spoken to Hoshi before, and she's unbearably shy. Not to mention, the only interaction with her involved her crying under a desk because your read a personal letter she wrote to her mother.

You try to say something, though you note that her body jolts in mild shock when you speak up. "So Hoshi... you getting anything in town?"

"Eep!" she lets out a surprised squeal. "I mean... yeah, I was hoping to grab some food for us all to eat by the campfire. I think Akemi baked some stuff... but it would be nice to have roasted marshmallows at night."

You nod your head. "Sounds pretty cool. I love a good roasted marshmallow."

"Y-yeah..." she mumbles.

You note that anytime you end up walking closer to Hoshi, she tends to move to the side, creating a distance between the two of you. Not to mention all the erratic and nervous glances she darts towards you when she thinks you don't notice.

"Hey Hoshi..." you begin.

"Ah... y-yeah?"

You sigh. You understand... it was only two days ago that the news of your Darkworlder-y-ness came to light. You should have expected that some people in class would still be wary of you. "Look Hoshi, I get it. But you should know... just because I have a lot in common with those things doesn't mean I am a Darkworlder."

Hoshi frantically shakes her head. "What? No! I was scared of you before I knew that!"

Well that's... refreshing? Reassuring? You don't know. "Wait, you're scared of me? Ryoji? Not the potential Darkworld monster that people seem to think I am."

Hoshi nods nervously. "Y-yeah... I mean, you're tall and you're gruff, and you can be pretty mean, I've heard... and... and you know how scared I am..."

Okay, now you feel guilty. "Hey listen, I didn't mean to read that letter. I had no idea who wrote it, so I had to read it to see who owned it."

"I understand..." Hoshi says, turning her head away, "But it's still hard to look at you, knowing what you know..."

You shake your head. Damn, this girl really is pretty fragile. Spending time with you is probably not the best option for her. "Look, is there anything I can do to make things cool between us?"

Hoshi pauses, thinking. In a sudden burst of confidence, an idea hits her. "Yes! Tell me one of your secrets!"

"What?" you ask, your eyes widened.

You shake your head. "No really, I mean it! Hoshi, I'm terrified of everything. I'm especially scared of the Darkworld, and whatever it is that's made me the way I am. I'm scared that one day I'll wake up and I won't be myself anymore... just some monster."

Hoshi slowly walks towards you, close enough that she can place a hand on your arm. "You're not a monster... at least, I-I don't think you'll ever be one..."

"Yeah... thanks, Hoshi. And trust me, all of us are scared. We live in a school that sits on a freaking portal to hell. It's real hard not to be terrified. You're not alone."

Hoshi looks at you right in the eyes for a while, before she gives a very small smile. "You... you're right, Ryoji. Come on, let's go shopping."

She walks close to your side as the two of you wander throughout the stores in town. She picks up a huge bag of marshmallow, you buy a squeeky toy for Kitten Daisuke to play with when you get back to the school, plus a new pack of smokes... thankfully the store-owner didn't ask for any identification. In a stroke of good fortune, you even manage to find an extra tent for sale at a reasonable price. Only holds two people, but it'll be worth it. You pay for the tent, as you and Hoshi carry your loot all the way back to the campsite. As you arrive you are both very pleased, and absolutely horrified to find two new additions to the site in the form of Kosuke and Rini.

"Sup, hope we aren't late or anything," Rini states, waving towards you. Well, that cancels out the extra tent... but at least your pals are here to join you.

Saki closes over a book as she notices you walking alongside Hoshi. She cautiously approaches you. "Hi, Ryoji! Can't help but notice you've got Hoshi along with you! Of course, I trust you enough to know you haven't done anything to upset her, right?"

Odd way of trying to work around the truce. To your surprise, Hoshi speaks up. "Actually, he was very nice to me..." she replies to Saki, "And we brought marshmallows for everyone."

She holds up the large bag, so that it covers her face, but it's not hard to tell that she's blushing.

Ken calls you over towards a pile of sticks on the ground. "Hey Ryoji, this'll be the site of the campfire for later. Right now, I was just about to take Akemi and Nanami out to the lake. They want to learn how to fish. Care to join? We can squeeze in time to fish later, if you're busy or don't want to deal with the learners."

"That's fantastic news!" you hear Chihiro exclaim, "Because I was just about to ask Ryoji to come sunbathing with me! A nice tan is exactly what we need to take our looks to the next level!"

You shrug. You'll be able to fish with Ken later, and watching Akemi and Nanami learning sounds like an unmitigated disaster. And besides, today's a special day, where you can go sunbathing with a girl and Saki won't lecture you and accuse you of being some kind of pervert.

Once you make your decision, Chihiro smiles and drags you by the hand in her usual forceful nature. You arrive at a spot by the lake, where Chihiro sits down, patting the ground beside her. You sit next to her, and she immediately pulls a small bag of chips out of her backpack, and offers you one. You refuse, she shrugs and munches down on one.

"Say, not to sound like a weirdo," you begin, "But aren't you a little overdressed to be sunbathing? Hell, you're wearing nearly twice as much as you usually do."

Chihiro laughs and cups your face in her hands. "Ryoji, you silly boy, why would I be sunbathing? My skin's already perfect! No, I just needed a reason to drag you away so that I could-"

"Yeah..." you mumble, remembering Chihiro's story of her relationship with ol' Grandma Charlotte. "Does that bother you?"

Chihiro shakes her head. "Heaven's, no! In fact, I think it's time I paid a little visit to her house myself. Properly introduce myself, maybe show off my new lovely brooch..."

"What, you're going to gloat in an old woman's face?" you ask.

"No, of course not!" Chihiro protests, "It's just that... she's my grandmother, and I want to try to connect with her. So... I want you to convince me."

Chihiro smiles as she springs to her feet. "Excellent! I knew I could count on you! Come on!"

"What, right now?"

"Of course! Why waste any time?" she replies, grabbing you by the hand and dragging you into town.

"Okay... but just don't rub the brooch in her face. For one, she thinks Saki has it. Finding you with it might be too much of a shock to the old bird."

Chihiro pouts. "Very well, I'll save the brooch for another time."

The two of you reach the old cottage of Chihiro's grandmother. You stand at the gate and motion for her to step forward and knock on the door. She hesitantly walks up to the door, clenches her fist into a ball and holds it high, inches away from the door, ready to knock. She keeps her hand up without moving it for a few seconds. She looks back at you, and you give an encouraging nod. She takes a deep breath, but her hand still refuses to move. Then, it begins to shake, then tense up, and before long Chihiro is running back behind the gate. She drops onto her ass and presses her knees up, breathing heavily.

"I'm sorry, Ryoji, I just can't do it!" she cries.

"Why not?" you ask, hunkering down so that your eyes meet hers.

Chihiro sighs, frustrated. "I just can't bring myself to see her... knowing that... knowing that she doesn't want me! I can't!"

She marches up towards the door, a march that soon becomes a sprint, and she furiously raps on the door with her fist. Her confidence seems to drain away the second she does this, as her eyes widen and she stands still in fear.

She breathes heavily, as the door slowly begins to creak open. The old woman looks Chihiro up and down as she stands nervously on the front porch. "My word... Alice?" she asks.

Chihiro breaks from her fit of nerves, and shakes her head. "No... my name is Chihiro. I'm... I'm..." She hesitates, before pointing towards you. "I'm a friend of Ryoji's!"

Charlotte looks towards you, then back at Chihiro. "I see... it's always nice to see more lovely young students coming to visit!" she smiles. "Would you like to come inside for some tea?"

Chihiro nervously gulps. "I... I'd love to!"

"Excellent!" the old woman says, leading her inside, "You know, you look and awful lot like my sister..."

She closes the door behind her, and you let out a sigh. Not the perfect result, eventually Chihiro will have to own up to who she really is, but it's a start. You place your hands in your pockets and slowly make your way back to camp.

Arriving, you see that Ken, Nanami and Akemi have returned from fishing... with no fish in their possession. You can imagine how poorly the lesson went. Ken is trying to start up a campfire when Akemi approaches you with a small box filled with biscuits.

"Hey Ryoji, I made these for a quick snack!" she says with a smile. "I was wondering if you'd like to eat them together and chat."

You've had all kinds of cookies, biscuits and other snacks baked by Akemi in detention before, so you know exactly what to expect when you take a bite out of them. Akemi smiles as she turns her head towards you. "Thanks for giving me that hoodie earlier! It was real nice of you!"

"Yeah... Nanami kept yelling about sailing on the lake, and I tripped and fell into the water. I think we chased all the fish away after that... and I had to change clothes again!"

She laughs uproariously, before turning towards you. "Hey, Ryoji... how did you get people to stop thinking you were a delinquent?"

"Well..." Akemi mumbles, "When you first got here, everyone was talking about the scary delinquent who came to class. But now... they treat you like a regular guy. Akemi looks at you confused. "What's wrong, you are my friend, right?"

Unless that's what you wanted me to mean..." she places a finger to her chin, in careful thought, "Because it actually doesn't sound that bad. "...And you were pretty eager to have a private lunch with me, so I wouldn't be surprised if you are... oh, you're looking at me weird. I guess I let my thoughts get carried away again didn't I..." She laughs nervously and scratches the back of her head. "I'm just going to go now! Enjoy the biscuits" she laughs as she quickly marches away from the bench.

You don't want to even begin to process how weird that was. Whatever, at least there's still some cookies leftover just for you. As you get ready to tuck in, a hand reaches down into the box and pulls one out. "What the hell?" you mutter, looking up to see Akio standing over you.

"Hey Ryoji, what's up?" Akio smirks, munching away on the biscuit.

I don't feel like either response is good, because we've seen the itneractions they've had and she does seem interested but is indeed playing hard-to-get to some degree, and we've also seen the initial spark that set these two off on each other, but this seems like the better option at least, cba to write-in

Akio shrugs. "I didn't really get it myself. I mean, a nerdy bookworm? That's usually enough to gross me out, but Hikaru... well, first of all, she's hot. Secondly... I don't know, I like how she doesn't take any of my crap."

You raise an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"

"Come on, Ryoji. I love to big myself up," he explains, "Understandably, too. Because I'm amazing. Being a popular guy, most girls I knew would always go along with it, crowd around me, tell me how cool I am. Look at Sayeka! She's been ridiculously nice to me no matter what I say, even though she's not even interested in me. But Hikaru... she doesn't hesitate to tell me to go screw myself. And she's such a wise-ass, she always makes me laugh. I think she's the only person to really remind me that... maybe I'm not all that... and maybe that's okay."

He lets out a longing sigh, as you stare at him. You're bewildered to see this side of Akio, of all people. He sounds like a dumb lovesick puppy. "Huh, you... really like this girl, don't you?"

Akio scoffs, and tries to put on his usual cocky face. "I wouldn't say that! I'm just not used to a girl turning me down, is all! It's not like I'm smitten or anything!"

"Oh, is that so?" Hikaru's calls out with a smirk as she approaches the bench. "Darn... and here I was just about to agree to a date. Oh well."

Akio turns his head, standing up from the bench. "Just you wait, I'll get that date eventually! You can't resist my charms forever!"

Hikaru shrugs. "You are pretty charming... after all, you're brash, obnoxious, you never leave me alone, still look at other girls, beat up my family members... what's not to love!"

Akio laughs as he walks away from the bench. Hikaru folds her arms and watches him as he leaves. "I'm never going to get tired of this."

Hikaru sits down on the bench. "Yeah, I know... I actually kinda like him, too. His whole cocky tough guy act is real cute. Still... I don't think that date's ever going to happen. I come from a pretty traditional family, and those values really rubbed off on me. I'm not going to date him unless he asks for my parents blessing... which he's never going to do, because he doesn't respect that. On top of that, I'm just not one for getting into a relationship unless I believe it'll end in marriage, and do you really think Akio's the marriage type?"

You don't want to lie, so you remain silent.

Hikaru sighs. "It's a shame, but that's how it is. But hey, we're both having fun with this. I enjoy our little back-and-forths, and you know how much Akio loves pursuing challenges. Isn't that all we can ask for? Oh, and before I forget..."

Hikaru reaches into her bag and pulls out a copy of Through the Looking Glass. "I came by to give this to you. Figured it would come in handy next time you're talking to that Darkworld girl. Could save you from another nasty trip to the hospital."

"Yeah... thanks."

"No problem," Hikaru smiles, "Just be sure to return it within the next two weeks. It's a library, not a giveaway."

You let out a small chuckle as she gets up and walks off. You get up off the bench yourself and make your way back to camp. Ken welcomes you with a smile. "Hey pal, you ready to go fishing?"

You walk behind the larger tent and pull out your fresh new pack of cigarettes. You open up the pack and give it a sniff. Oh, yes. It's been way too long since you've had one of these.

You pull out a smoke and light it up, placing it in your mouth and taking a long drag. You practically feel all the stress lift from your body as you do. Oh man, that's the stuff.

"Ryoji, what are you doing?"

Oh crap, it's Saki. Here to give you an annoying lecture about... wait a minute, no she's not. That would be breaking the truce. You smirk and happily puff away as she approaching you.

"Ryoji... are you smoking?" she asks, annoyed.

"Yep, I sure am," you reply, "And it's fantastic."

"Ryoji, that's..." Saki begins, but hangs her head low as she remembers the truce. "That's... your decision, and you're free to live your live however you want..." she mutters.

"Glad we see eye to eye," you laugh. "Because I love these."
