/qst/ - Quests

After the embarrassment dies down and Carrera isn't blushing that much any more, it feels safe to speak again.

“So, you're with us?”, you then ask, just to make sure that both members of the couple are on the same page about joining you on the journey. Julio was giving it for granted, it seems, but Carrera has thrown quite a few mixed messages in.

“Yes”, the dog-eared woman admits, a single wag of her long-haired and wavy purple tail signaling she isn't as unhappy about the situation as she might sound, “I just have to prepare. I've hardly ever explored, methodically I mean, so I need to make sure I have everything I need before I leave. You weren't planning on leaving today, were you?”.

“Not really”, you reassure her. Technically speaking, you're not in a hurry, the marquise wanted you to do one thing as soon as possible and you already took care of it, meaning you are, once again, master of your own destiny.

Which feels good. Sure, it's not always easy but it's so much more satisfying when it clicks.

“Well then”, Carrera announces with a smile as she gets up, “We'll go and get ready and we can meet again this evening, at sundown? We'll have a meal together too if you're okay with it. Julio?”.

“Looking forward meals is the best pastime in this camp!”, he explains with a bright, innocent smile.

“You should seriously try to be more helpful”, she reprimands, then offers you a vaguely conspirational smile, “He gets away with being lazy, but it's an unwritten camp rule that if you have time on your hands you should do some chores”.

“That's surprisingly organized for this place”, Tahenohan comments, strangely eager, “I can make cheese. I need to make cheese actually. Can I help?”.

“Uh... I think everyone will like it if you can cook and stuff”, Carrera gives you an uncertain glance but you can't quite openly say it's just an excuse she uses to craft her undead minions, so you just shrug. Besides, she actually does make cheese, so it's win-win, you guess.

“Great! Wanna look for cheesemakers together?”, Tahenohan offers Julio, who carefully considers the option as if he just received a life-changing proposal.

“Yes”, he answers, and with glee the two half-elves just go about their business, chatting along the way.

“They sure are getting along as easily as I imagined”, Bryld comments as she watches them go, “I don't know why but I feel good that I guessed right”.

Carrera chuckles, “Well yes, I... I don't know how long you've been with her but I think all half-elves just instinctively get along with each other. But well”, and she steps out, ready to leave herself, “I concentrate better when he's not around so thank you. I'll prepare for the journey, we'll see each other for dinner and discuss the rest, okay?”.

>”I have another question...” (what?)

"So Bryld, what's our next plan?", you ask her while you're alone.

"You're asking me?", she confirms, as if the fact baffles her. After seeing your reassuring nod, she starts thinking about it, her eyes darting here and there, sometimes fixing on someone or some part of the camp's main resting area, and lastly on you.

"I'm not sure. I didn't know how to feel about you recruiting more people at first if I have to be honest. I mean it's not like I'm jealous or anything", she claims while trying to hide a bit of blushing by looking away, "I was just a bit surprised, that's it. Now that I've met the first two I feel kind of reassured, I mean they look like they could handle themselves in a scrap and, you know... Safety in numbers, right?".

She has a point, of course, "Yes, that was my reasoning too", you confirm.

"I still don't want to go out and look for any trouble, mind you", she points out, "I'll just be glad that we'll have help if trouble finds us. Which I still hope won't happen".

"So you're satisfied with them?".

She thinks about it for a few moments, "You know... I was wondering whether we should recruit someone else or not. I'm not an expert so I don't know at what point an expedition stops being a party of explorer and starts being a crowd. Or a band of raiders. Or conquerors given the Reconquista and everything", she chuckles.

You don't know either. You have impressively little experience with that and the only one who might know something about it is Tahenohan. Or your father, he most certainly has a long standing experience of adventuring, and raiding too most likely, so he has to know which is the optimal party size and at what point it just turns into a mess. If you include Carrera and Julio that would make five of you, which doesn't sound very impressive considering you managed until today with just three.

You follow Bryld's gaze, and notice she is looking questioningly at the large man dressed in heavy-looking furs and most likely wondering how he isn't melting in this weather. She also steals several glances at the minotaur cooking at the grill like she has not a care in the world. In the end, she looks back up at you.

"Speaking of which", she goes, "Shouldn't your father be here? They must have arrived by now considering we took our sweet time getting there".

She's right, it would be safe to guess he's somewhere in Maner, along with Meztli.

"Maybe he could give us some advice. Or Meztli cou- Yeah no nevermind", and Bryld sighs. You don't even remember her voice, but you're sure she did say utter word or two once.

You can't help but stare at the minotaur yourself, for quite a bit. Like Bryld, you've never seen one. You don't think they technically count as human, which makes her about as exotic as a harpy, even though you're certain there are male minotaurs around, so she shouldn't have a reason to try and rape you and you've never heard of that being a problem.

Or maybe you're both staring at her for her quite impressive chest. That's also a possibility.

However, you reason that if she comes here often, to cook or whatnot, she must know quite a few people, or at least their faces and names. Or maybe just the faces.

You gather your resolve and decide to go pester her.

"Hello!", you greet her, "Do you come here often? We were wondering if we could bother you for a moment".

"Oh", she says with a soft voice which is a little more high-pitched than Susanna's. Granted, she's not that big, and Susanna had a rather deep one to begin with, but it's a bit surprising to hear someone of that size speak in such a suave tone. "You're not bothering me", she smiles kindly as she carefully lays the zucchini over the grill, cut in somewhat thick slices, "At all".

"We're looking for adventurers, see? Since you're here often we were wondering if you knew any that are available", you go straight to the point, unsure on what to expect from this creature.

She doesn't answer at first, carefully prodding the vegetables with a fork to make sure they are appropriately spaced on the irons and taking a moment to make sure the fire isn't too high. "Well", she begins, while slowly bending down to pick up some bell peppers, the yellow and red kind. Once she comes back up she lays the fork down and switches it for a sharp-looking large knife and begins to clean them, "I do come here often. Yes".

Once she has cut them open, she starts to peel the seeds away, "I, uhm. I don't really know... That many people". She puts special care in making sure not to waste the seeds, which further slows down the process of everything she's doing, including switching from knife to fork to flip over the zucchini, "But I have met some. Yes. Some I know".

You are instinctively reminded of just how much trouble it is to move a cow that decided to just stand in the middle of the road for no reason at all.

"Could you... Introduce us to someone?", you ask, hoping it will take less than sundown for her to formulate an answer.

"Mmmmmmh...", she goes, even stopping her bell pepper cutting antics to route more energies into thinking. But oh, isn't her smile warm and nice when she does speak. "Yes".

You have to wait until she carefully lays the bell peppers on the grill before she continues, "Soon. Lunch is soon. People like vegetables", she announces, giving a longing look to the crates she stacked right next to her.

You decide to let her continue. You were thinking someone this exotic and with such assets was bound to attract at least a small crowd, or at least one or two interested folks. You guess the amount of patience required to deal with her is a great dividing point between people who care enough and those who, after all, don't.

Seems like most people just don't.

"I like vegetables", she declares, a carrot in her hand, as she examines it carefully, "Sliced. Cooked. Steamed. Raw", she looks at it for some more, then sighs and puts it down, "But people love them grilled more".

"About those adventurers that you know", you carefully insist, trying to not push her, knowing fully well that pushing a cow is an exercise in futility, "Could you introduce us? I mean, could you tell us who they are and where to find them? We'll take care of the rest".

You compliment yourself for the choice of not depending on Pam to introduce you. That would have taken a whole week at this point. However, you're not certain it's going to take much less time all considered.

"Oh. Of course". The zucchini are now ready and she gently impales them with the fork to move them over to a wooden tray that looks small in her hands but is actually of a decent size. Once she's done, she flips over the bell pepper slices, one by one, and then starts carefully cutting oregan to put in a small wooden bowl, "You could- Oh".

She pauses, and for a moment you wonder if she just cut herself. Of course she hasn't, it would be amazing if she did considering the speed at which she is proceeding, "Maybe they are not adventurers".

As the minotaur wallows in doubt, idly staring at the void in front of her, you hold your breath for a moment and then decide to try and snap her out of it, "It's okay, we'll worry about that, just tell them who they are and we'll take care of the rest".

It takes longer than it should for your words to reach her brain, let alone for the latter to process it, but ultimately she nods and gives an angelic smile, "Yes", she agrees, "Well, uhm... It's a bit late".

And she leaves it at that. "Late for what?", Bryld intervenes, with the sort of face someone makes when they thought they had much more patience than they actually do.

"To praise the sun", Pam explains, then smiles kindly, "But worry not". She flips the bell peppers again and then begins to cut some eggplant, "You could always. I mean we got a new wizard you know?".

You didn't know, of course. You didn't even know there was an old one.

"Or", she figures, "Maybe that priest of Jure?".

And she gets stuck thinking. Again.

You have some information at least. You can't say your patience hasn't paid off. Even Bryld lets out a sigh of relief as your valiant efforts are finally rewarded. But this is just the beginning, you still have to put the cat in the bag so to speak.

"You talked about a wizard, where can we find it?", you decide to ask.

"Mh...", Pam sounds unsure, which is not a good start, but that's probably because she's unsure of what to do with the grill and her wooden tray, for once she moves the bell peppers from one to the other she finds the grill empty, and she clearly doesn't want to keep it empty, but at the same time she wants to keep doing something else with oregan and garlic. At a certain point she finally decides that she can always cut more eggplant and grill that instead. "He's very helpful. If you ask, he directs the chores. Oh", she looks up, as if she somehow offended you, "Oooooh you mean the new one!".

You didn't, because you don't know the difference, but decide to let her go on regardless, "She is... Somewhere. Her tent is big". That's not very helpful, but the moment she is satisfied with the placement of the somewhat thick eggplant slices on the grill, she smiles and goes "Because she is big".

That helped.

"And what about the priest of Jure? Is there a temple?", that would be helpful, so you expect there not to be one.

"Not yet", she answers, which sounds strange but at the same time normal, "No stone. Just like how I'm running out of olives". She looks sad for a moment, but she's looking at a glass bottle full of olive oil. You suppose that's the last one she has. Not surprising, considering this doesn't look like the place for olives, at all. Then again you don't know much about agriculture in the Shadow Marches.

"So... Where do we find this priest?", you insist.

She thinks about it, very carefully, then smiles, "With the sick".

Admittedly, that's a very smart answer. Not as helpful as you hoped for, but in the end you can't blame the minotaur for that.

"And who is it that praises the sun?", you conclude, hoping to be done as soon as possible.

The mashing of oregano and garlic gets put into a bowl along with olive oil and some salt and pepper, and then mashed again with a pestle and mixed with a brush. “Mh. Why. Them”, she smiles, as if the answer should be obvious, “Though they're questing”.

“Them... Who?”, Bryld asks, at the verge of exasperation.

“Oh. Those three”, she explains, without adding any other details, but a genuine smile, “You'll see them. Very tanned, very muscular. Not very dressed”.

She's not very dressed either, but you guess those three have even less in the way of clothing if she pointed it out.

Bryld gives you a long, wide-eyed look that's between a beg and an order.

"Would you like to come with us on an adventure?".

With the corner of your eye you spy how Bryld's expression perfectly communicates that no, this isn't what she was trying to tell you and that you're a fool who condemned us all.

It may be a bit overdramatic but from the way Pam reacts, which is by giving you a sort of dumb look mixed with the kindness of someone who would still like to do her best to understand and reply but at the same time has vegetables to take care of, and somehow cannot decide which of the three should receive priority...

"Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeh", she goes, but she's just buying time. Or rather, wasting it. Yours in particular. The grilled vegetable get this oily mixture of her brushed on them with care and a little bit of anticipation; you figure she might be already hungry even though it's a little bit early for lunch. Then again, she is big, and therefore has a big stomach; after having been in the company of two arachne and an ogre you can definitely say that big people eat a lot.

"I'm not an adventurer", she confesses, sounding sorry, "I would love to accompany you...".

"It's okay, it's okay", you smile reassuringly, though you're really trying to placate Bryld more than Pam, even though you're looking at the latter, "You don't have to worry, I was just asking".

"Thank goodness", she smiles, looking so relieved that she even forgets to fill the grill with more vegetables, "I didn't want to disappoint you".

"You haven't. Believe me, you haven't", and you take a step back, followed promptly by Bryld. You spy her cow tail wagging lazily about, which you guess means she's feeling good after all.

"We have to go now", Bryld intervenes, grabbing your arm with a smile, "Thank you for your time!".

"Come back for the vegetables!", she smiles as she waves you off, returning to her task, which at that pace might take her the rest of the day.

Still somewhat dazed by the experience, you follow Bryld's pull for a bit, noticing how she too is in a similar state. "Damn it Lillith I don't want to die of old age in my next expedition", she mutters.

You get how she feels. If Carrera only needs a day to prepare herself for a journey, Pam might need up to a month just to think of what to bring if that's the speed at which she blazes through life.

“I never saw a minotaur before”, Bryld continues, blinking to get out of the bedazzlement, “And I never would have thought they were like that”.

As a matter of fact, no stories or stereotypes prepared you for such a herbivore pace of life. You would usually assume a large creature to be dangerous and powerful, which she might as well be, but that's certainly not the impression you are left with.

You decide to set off to see the wizard.

Considering how eccentric wizards tend to be in your experience, both from the stories everyone hears about them and the ones you personally met, it shouldn't be difficult to find one. Pam also said the new one is quite "big", meaning even physically she should be hard to miss.

It can't be Susanna, of course. But you wonder if it's anyone equally big. You figure it might as well be, but you would certainly have seen them while roaming about.

Bryld suggested that you might as well get closer to the "tower", figuring that if ordinary people are afraid to get nearby, a wizard might instead be attracted to it. This reasoning of hers sounds solid, especially the moment you see it firsthand.

It's a stone tower shaped like a fork lightning, with no doors nor windows, yet it looks like it was built by stacking and glueing stones together with skilled masonship. It's a few metres tall, you'd say no more than ten, and while it doesn't look like it could crumble at any moment it's no surprise there's neither tent nor people nearby.

Bryld herself doesn't really feel like getting closer than necessary to that, and neither do the children that play around the area, which is one of the most spacious in the civilian part of Maner.

"Quite a sight isn't it?", a confident and somewhat masculine voice booms as it gets closer to you. You were expecting to see a giantess of some sort, but are instead faced with a woman dressed in an elegant blue cloak decorated with swirly stars and wearing a large-brimmed hat with a floppy point in the exact same pattern. Light and wavy ice blue hair flows in the space between her headgear and the tall collar, and you can spy a light but solid-looking green blouse beneath the wizardly apparel.

And you absolutely cannot miss her quadrupedal body, and the elongated upper limbs that are typical of centaurs. Her clopping is well-paced and the light trot allows her to very quickly cover the distance between you. From up close, you can clearly see that her confident expression has a certain smug to it, though not like Cassilda's, and that her brightly coloured eyes with long eyelashes are constantly licked by small gouts of ethereal, iridescent flames, as if lit by a lazy fire.

Her horse body is likewise covered in a barding of the same sort as her cloak to which it is most likely just an extension, with a small saddle bag on her right side. "The wizard responsible for this is very powerful... And skilled. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say we all strive to be like her".

She then offers you a broad smile, her arms crossed under her chest, "You don't look like ordinary settlers, you have the flame of passion burning within you. What are your names? Yours will be worth remembering".

"I'm Lillith, she's Bryld", you answer, and now that this centaur is close to you you can easily tell that... You can practically look at her in the eye. This is a little odd, you expected centaurs to be taller, and the few ones you saw were, in fact, quite big. This one is quite small instead, you think you would have no problems hopping on her back.

"Lillith and Bryld? Very well. I am Parvaneh the kindled", and she does a small horse bow, masterfully taking her hat to her chest and then slipping it back on with an enviable smoothness that is, admittedly, quite difficult to achieve with a hat of that size, "How may I be of service?".

"Are you a wizard?", you ask. It's probably the worst question you could ask in this moment but in your defense you are not that used to wizards yet. You're going to be very soon, that's for sure, but for now? Not much.

"A wizard?", she looks dumbfound for a moment, then her grin kicks in and the iridiscent flames in her eyes take a somewhat yellowish tint, the licking flames ablaze with passion, changing the very colour of her eyelashes, "The most powerful wizard currently in Maner! Truly, my mastery of the arcane arts is unmatched... Certainly, others have their qualities, but my raw power is, by far, superior".

You give Bryld a glance and she gives it back to you without adding anything. Unfortunately you don't really have the experience nor knowledge to tell whether she's actually that good or just a loudmouth, so you'll have to decide on your own whether to believe her or not. Fortunately for you, she seems to want to continue the description of her own skills, "I have a strict philosophy to follow the most direct course of action when it comes to magic. The Ether wind is tricky and you should never fool yourself into thinking you can control it more than you actually can, which is why you must always give all that you have. If you hold back, you will never know, let alone surpass, your own limits".

Bryld keeps giving her a strange look, though it's perfectly understandable considering how her eyes are lit by this iridescent fire that keeps changing colour. Her eyes, though, are often fixed on you, and she keeps looking up and down at your figure as if though she saw something in you, though admittedly your own appearance is quite exotic, no matter just how far from human someone may be. Demonic heritage is nothing to scoff at in an oddity competition.

“Would you like to go on an adventure?”, you then ask, and she grins.

“Tell me more”.

>A small thing, is it correct to put a full stop after the quotation marks when it's speech and nothing else in the line?

I think different countries have different standards. Most English texts I've read with this structure have the full stop inside the quotation marks if it's at the end of the line, whereas I'm confident no decently-written Italian text has them inside, I've always been taught they belong outside.

And then there's the French who don't even have quotation marks because France, so yeah.

"We are explorers, working for the marquise", you explain.

"Explorers? A noble craft... And that explains the burning flame of your passion", she crosses her arms once again, and even with her eyes closed you can still see a lick of flame or two escape from her eyelids every once in a while, "Away from civilization, with no one to count on but yourselves for weeks on end...".

That's quite a dramatic way to put it, you haven't been away from civilization that long... Yet. Though you might in the close future. Let's just say that until now you never had to appropriately spend time foraging and hunting for food or go to bed on an empty stomach, or improvise a healing poultice out of local herbs to staunch a bleeding. Hopefully you never will, but realistically speaking you might want to be prepared for all this and maybe even more.

"Say, do you worship Ishtar?", you then ask.

Parvaneh opens her eyes and gives you a weird look, though it takes really little for her to recover her confidence in full, "A strange question. My relationship with the divine forces is no different from those of any other... I recognize and thank the hard work of Gaia and Iria both, for one".

"Of Iria, too?", Bryld sounds surprised.

"Yes. Though many scholars insist my kind wasn't part of her divine plan, only a fool would put me in a different light than the elves or the dwarves. Besides, it is quite commonly accepted that her divine plan involves all intelligent beings, regardless of species", she then gives you a deep look, and the iridescent flames in her eyes turn green, "Did you assume I looked for solace within the mother of monsters' breast? I am afraid I do not belong there. There are creatures much more fitting of her attention, especially out there in the wilderness. Besides, I do not have that much interest in multiplying".

Bryld pre-emptively glares at you.

“We might be looking for monsters. The friendly sort, though”, you anticipate.

“Ah, so you are a missionary”, the centaur wizard chuckles, elegantly crossing her front legs, “I understand your reasoning, then. You should be careful still, given this land's tragic backstory it might be naive to presume they will all be friendly with you”.

On one side you want to disagree with her due to your anecdotal evidence, which clearly clashes against such vision, on the other you wonder if they weren't friendly because you were there and could only focus on your possibly supernatural ability to be trusted by monsters and their kind. You can't help but wonder if having too many people around you will hamper that effect.

Then again maybe you're just being silly. You don't really know.

>”We would like to go further North”.
>”What kind of wizard are you? We have one in the party already”.
>”We don't have much to pay you with, though”.
>”How long would it take for you to get ready?”.
>”Do you know a priest of Jure?”.
>”Do you know of any other adventurers?”.
>Other?

Better to be honest about it.

"For good reason", Parvaneh answers, "Kobolds, undead and other monsters, of the non-friendly sort, lurk about there. Oh fear not, should they threaten your expedition I will blast them to smithereens, I have no intention to let a few savages stop us, not after all the effort that went into this expedition".

"I would still rather not face the threat of death in the first place", Bryld mutters under her breath, though you can still hear her very well. You also cannot quite disagree with her.

"We weren't planning to look for trouble", you smile, "We just wanted to explore the land and provide the marquise with maps to show for it".

"And treasures", the centaur wizard interjects.

"Well...", you blink, "We surely would like that".

"You don't understand", she chuckles, "Razing and pillaging are just par for the course in a war, but what gets trampled does not disappear into nothingness. These lands must be full of buried, forgotten treasures, the ruins of outposts and ancient cities, and who knows what from the civilizations that predated our own. I bet she actually wants you to bring that back more than maps".

Bryld frowns, "Well, there was a... Fort Shade? Or something. They would certainly be very useful landmarks", she agrees, but she looks at you as if you could enlighten her some.

You can't, of course, you have no experience with that.

"I don't know about treasure hunting, but we have brought back results already from the exploration side", you boast, "Bryld here is a very good cartographer and I'm certain the marquise will appreciate that as well".

Parvaneh chuckles again, tipping her wide-brimmed hat, "It is nice to see you are not motivated by the same thrist that fuels the brutality of bandits. We were expecting many more individuals from that path of life to escape here, following the success of the Reconquista... I suppose we were fortunate to have encountered some difficulties. Maybe the worst of humanity got scared".

Even though she finds the situation amusing, you can't help but feel your heart plunge for a moment at the comparison with banditry. You were, yourself, so extremely close to falling there, your heart is still filled with shame and being reminded of that was a blow you weren't expecting.

It's okay though, it wasn't on purpose and besides, no one but you and your friends know about it. And you all moved on, without hurting anyone.

Right now, you have made three new acquaintances and are about to lead them into another expedition, the second of your career, which will hopefully give you both recognition, credit and money from the local ruler, the marquise herself. With luck, you might be able to either avoid or push through any potential confrontation with hostile natives.

Everything is fine now.

Thank you for participating! Sorry again for the last couple weeks, things kept coming up at the last minute and I haven't been able to run properly.

Now we're back in action though and I might even be able to do something extra in the following days. As always, thank you for your time and stay tuned for more!

Shit.

No, I haven't missed an entire post, just a line. I noticed just now.

Well. Shit. Sorry, I think it's easy to guess which line was missing but damn. Shame on me for copy-pasting in a hurry, I guess.

This is both clever and dumb. I laughed anyway.
