The world was once ours and we shared it equally. The forest was our domain and it stretched between all four corners of the world. We lived in peace and upheld the balance. There was death, but no suffering. It was all part of the circle of life. However, all that changed when the creatures with the Red Flower came to this world. Humans, the Guardians called them. They came in the night and burned down our forests, killed our guardians, raped and pillaged our lands. There was no end to their crusade against us and no reason behind their cruelty. We, the creatures of the forest, was brought close to extinction before our salvation came: The World Tree, the center and the roots of our Forest that once spanned the world, called us all back to it. Within its borders the last Guardian, the Great Horned Owl, placed three barrier spells that would keep the Red Flower out and whomever wielded it. Before he fell into a deep slumber from which there would be no awakening, he placed the new role of Guardianship upon the red-eyed Awoo Race. They would guard this new forest realm behind walls of magic until the end of time.
Three centuries of peace has passed by since then.

[Traits/Perks]
Childish Energy: You have an unusual amount of stamina and don't get tired easily from physical activities.
____

The clear blue sky gave way to a warm sun on a windy spring morning.

You, a young white haired girl, rushed through the thick scores of the forest, giggling playfully to yourself as you raced past two of your peers. In your joy, you had lost control of your wagging white tail, your ears pointed to the sky, and your red eyes was filled with laughter. The white clothes you wore clung to your body at the same time as the loose parts flapped against the head-wind.

You had been running for at least a hour, yet you were still not tired. While running as fast as you could, you had left four others behind in your wake. They would catch up eventually, but their silly pride came second to your desire to win this race between friends and foes alike. With a leap, you left the muddied ground from yesterday's downpour of rain and landed clumsily on a rock before regaining balance and continuing onto the next stone ahead as your path lead further into the thick of the Forest.

"You're as slow as ever!" You heard someone call out followed by a familiar laughter from above. You stopped and cast your gaze upwards, catching an all too common sight of a white haired figure crouching on one of the stronger tree branches a few meters ahead of you.

Your eyes narrowed at the sight of your mortal enemy, the Awoo that you're destined to beat and humiliate, the foe you MUST surpass no matter what! Your rival!

"Suck a toad, Chao! I'm still gonna beat you!" You shouted back at him, but your counter was met with a mocking laughter from Chao.

"I'll tell Sensei you wanted me to suck him!" He let out another laugh before jumping ahead to the next branch, heading further away from you.

"He's a frog, not a toad!" You tried to retort, but Chao has already disappeared into the thick greenery. Instead of wasting another second on the growing frustration you felt in the back of your head, you leaped after him, one stone at a time.

You've known Chao from the moment you could walk on two legs. He used to be your friend, but two years ago your friendship became a heated rivalry when he claimed he would become the best Guardian the Forest has ever seen. That was your dream, and he knew it! Why would he want to take that away from you? Nevertheless, the two of you have been at each other's throats ever since the Guardian trials was announced to begin.

It's happening today! You and some other Awoo along with Chao made a bet on who could get to Sensei's lake first. As far as you know, there's only one Awoo between you and certain victory! Chao. You increased your speed.

You sped up your jumps, close to the point of almost losing your footing once or twice upon landing on the next stone. If you fell now, your loss would have been certain.

At this speed it would have been hard to navigate correctly through the greenery for most other races, but the Awoo had quick reflexes and a good sense of hearing. In the distance you could hear the small waterfall by the lake Sensei lived at. You always went there with Chao when you were younger to play in the water with your parents in the summer. Fond memories that you held onto dearly.

In a jump, you looked up at the tree branches above that Chao used to travel with. He tried to teach you once, against his own wishes might you add, after Sensei had asked him to do it. You just couldn't keep your balance up there. It was hard enough keeping it intact while traveling between rocks and stones of various sizes.

Up in the trees you had to have a good eye for what branches could hold your weight and which ones branched out in the right direction BEFORE actually jumping to it in full speed. It was a hassle, really.

With a great leap, you leave the forest behind and land gracefully upon the ground before slipping on some mud and crashing down on your bum. A heavy sigh escapes you before you realize something amazing while scanning the green field surrounding the lake; Chao isn't here yet! You've won!

>Jump into the lake and make your way to Sensei's abode before the others.

The thought of sticking around and gloating about your victory to Chao striked you, but then you remembered what your Sensei's words of wisdom always were: "Others might tell you that which separates you and Chao is skill and a born talent, but do not let yourself be fooled such words. In this forest, all stand as equals except for one difference; humility. You possess this that which Chao does not. Always remember that, child."

The cold spring air filled your lungs and you closed your eyes. The frustration you felt before was all blown away along with your desire to trample further on your rival's defeat. This wasn't the time for it anyhow. Not until you became a better Guardian than him! Turning about, you made your way over to the edge of the clear blue lake. The water was somewhat cold, but it was getting warmer. A promise of an imminent summer that filled you with joy. When the waters reached up to your knees, you heared a thud a couple of meters behind you. Chao had reached the lake after leaping off from one of his last branches and made a perfect landing on a dry patch of grass. Glancing back though, you watched as his confident smile died at the sight of you wadding through the edge of the lake. He shook his head at you as if to show that your victory meant nothing, but you couldn't help but crack a wide smile when you looked away.

Yes!

When the water reached your neck, you finally decided to dive down. You had grown accustomed to the light coldness of the water by then. For you, holding your breath was as easy as picking flowers on the field overlooking your village. It felt like it had always been this easy, but you remember that you had a hard time holding your breath when you were younger. You wondered what had changed, but in the end it didn't really matter to you. The lake wasn't deep by any means, so the trip through the colourful plants and the passive fishes that didn't bother with you went quick and smooth. You swam under a small stone ridge and then made it to the surface where you found footing on some flat rocks under the water.

With only your head above the surface in this small underwater cavern, you came face to face with your Sensei: A small frog for sure, but size didn't matter when you had the wisdom, experience, and age rivaling even that of the last Guardian of old; the slumbering Great Horned Owl perched upon the branches of the World Tree. Sensei had taught every single Awoo since the Owl granted them the responsibility of Guardianship over the Forest Realm. He was an old creature, but humble and not too cranky for his age.

"Ah, Lin, my child. I've been-- Hmph." He began before interrupting himself at the sight of you where he was standing, brewing his favorite insect tea with the smallest tea set you've ever laid your eyes upon. "Where are the rest of your peers?" He asked slowly as you heard someone break the surface of the water next to you. Chao. He threw you a glare filled with daggers.

>Explain that they will come soon and ask that Sensei waits for them.

Ignoring Chao the best you could, you took a deep breath and tried to calm down. He had a way to rile you up, even in front of the one person you didn't want to see you angry.

"They will be here soon, Sensei. Can we wait for them?" You explained the other's late-comings. Sensei gave way to a smile that's cut short from Chao's comment.

"If they weren't always so slow, we wouldn't always have to wait for the losers." He scoffed pridefully, completely forgetting on purpose that just short time of mere minutes ago, he lost the race to the lake to you. Sensei's smile vanished and he shook his head at his most arrogant, and gifted student. However, he didn't voice his concerns just yet. It was time for the usual ritual where he poured another small cup and offered it to you before lecturing Chao about something. You accepted the cup, as always, but you put it away politely today. The sudden sweet taste was not worth the long bitter aftertaste that stains ones pallets for hours after drinking it. It's a tea brewed for a frog after all.

"Patience is the companion wisdom, Chao. And what is wisdom?" Sensei directed his question to your rival while sipping on his tea, sitting down on his small chair made out of lily pads and wood.

Chao sighed loudly and irritably, noting that he had heard this question one too many times in his life. "It's one of the cornerstones of being a Guardian." He muttered, avoiding Sensei's gaze.

"Correct." Sensei ended his lecture early for once when the others suddenly arrived to the cave as well. Within only a few minutes, nine wet Awoo heads were sticking up through the water inside the home of a Frog. Everyone was finally present and it was finally time to start the trials to become an actual Guardian! You were bubbling with excitement and struggling to keep your act together and listen attentively to Sensei as he began his introduction lesson that he had repeated to hundreds, maybe even thousands, of Guardians for three centuries.

"What is Yin and Yang?" He asked aloud, and the cave fell into a confused silence.

The what and the who now?

Where have I heard this before? It's on the tip of my tongue! I can't let Chao answer this while I'm left looking like a clueless tool!

Then it struck you outta nowhere! Your Father told you about it some 10 years ago, when you were only 4 years old. It's almost a miracle that you could remember things past the age of 5. Throwing a glance to Chao, you noticed that he was about to open his mouth. Now or never!

"It's--" Chao started, but you interrupted him with an even quicker answer and a raised voice.

"It's the balance of this world. The energy found within all living and passive things, that which connects and separates us all. Everything but..." You drifted off because frankly, that's what your Father did as well. You had no idea what the full answer was, but judging from Chao's irritated look he didn't know either. It seemed like Sensei was satisfied with your answer as well, but you couldn't help but catch a sad glint in his big eyes at the mere mention of something unknown and unsaid.

"Correct, Lin. Very good. The rest of your answer goes like this: 'Everything but the Red Flower and those who wield it.' - The Red Flower is something horrible, yet enticing and filled with promises of power." Sensei explained, rising slowly from his chair, walking up to his students. Something lit up in Chao's eyes when Sensei mentioned promises of power. "However, do not be fooled by such promises like those whom wield was. The Red Flower is the embodiment that which rejects Yin and Yang, the balance of our world. It corrupts everything it touches, no matter how powerful you are. Even the strongest and most noble of Guardians died to its corruption when it spread across the lands." Sensei appeared more serious, and sad, than you had ever seen him be before in your life.

"Fear the Red Flower, but never cave to its promises nor to its corrupting touch. Knowing this and accepting it, is the first step to becoming a true Guardian."

An uneasy silence fell over the group but they nodded to their teacher all the same, but Sensei soon cleared his throat and his warm smile returned.

"Now, let me tell about Humans, the Red Flower, and how this Forest Realm that you've grown up inside of came to be."

The history lesson enlightened things for you and it felt as though your dream of becoming the strongest Guardian just got harder, but at the same time you wanted it so much more. It was a conflicting feeling that still felt good somehow. Chao was uncharacteristically expressionless and quiet throughout the entire lesson, never once uttering a snarky comment and always listening. It felt... odd. Either way, Sensei had instructed you to gather at the old Hedge stone standing on the northern side of the lake and wait for him there.

You all waited for 20 minutes before Chao returned to his old self again.

"By the Tree, Sensei is late as always!" He started his usual impatient whining and you heard a low grumble from your stomach. It was already time for lunch, but you wagered that there wouldn't be any time for that today. In your hurry, you hadn't packed one to go on your way out this morning.

"I heard that, Lin." Chao mockingly smirked at you before he fished something out from his tunic. A small wrapped tuna sandwich. "Tell you what, if you can climb this Hedge stone, I'll give this to you." That sounded easy enough, but he added a condition; "while you're wet." and he nodded towards the lake.

Bastard.

>Reject his challenge. Sensei might be here soon.

The urge to accept his offer and defeat him a second time today was almost overwhelming. Almost. However, the thought of your first victory becoming void in the face of defeat held you at bay just enough to reject his challenge. And who knows what will happen if you climb this Hedge stone? You've passed it by and seen it several times over the years while visiting Sensei, but you've never actually thought to touch it, despite your curiosity. It was just a gut feeling and it had guided you even to this day.

"I've already defeated you once today, Chao. I don't need to prove anything to you." The reply had predictable effects on Chao, but before he could voice is scorn and mock you, Sensei jumped out of the lake and started making his way towards his group of students with each next jump. Your rival held is words of contempt, for now.

"Every guardian of this forest realm has once stood where you stand now. This Hedge stone is not a normal stone, as you might have guessed. It has stood here long before the World Tree's roots branched out and grew to connect with the rest of the world. Not every Guardian used it in their trials before the Red Flower, but it stands to reason that it is essential now." Sensei lectured the class upon reaching them and jumped up on your shoulder to get a clear view of everyone on an eye-to-eye level.

"W-what is it u-used f-for, Sensei?" The stammering girl whom asked the question was named Ming. She was a bright and cheerful girl, but in the presence of Sensei, she always grew quiet and shy. You've asked her about it before, but she always avoided the topic. Strange girl, but she was somewhat of a friend to you, so you never pushed the subject.

"An astute question, Ming." Sensei complimented her softly, and she hide a smile behind her robed arm, but her wagging fluffy tail revealed her happiness nonetheless. "Let me demonstrate." And with that, Sensei left your shoulder with a jump and landed in front of the Hedge stone. Suddenly his mouth and throat started to swell and a second later his purple long tongue flew out and swiped against the stone with lightning speed. You never even saw the tongue leave his mouth, but you all heard the crack when it connected with the stone. You all stared in silent awe and shock when a piece of the Hedge stone fell off and crashed to the ground with a loud thud. However, what happened next was almost cause for panic.

"Yes, this stone isn't a normal one like the ones you've seen in the forest." Sensei said aloud after redacting his tongue back into his mouth. The Hedge stone started to moan loudly, as if the Frog had awakened something huge and then you all watched with mouths hung agape as the Hedge stone grew out a replacement to fill in the spot where Sensei had removed a piece of it.

"By the Tree..."
"By the Tree..."
Both you and Chao whispered at the same time at the unbelievable sight.

"Now, who wants to pick up the stone I cut off?" Sensei inquired to which Chao immediately raised his hand!

"Hm, alright, let's have Lin demonstrate to everyone what happens with the piece of Hedge stone that I cut off. Pick it up and while firmly grasping it, hold it beneath the water of the lake until I tell you otherwise. Do not be startled and pull it out." Sensei explained after making his choice between you, Chao, and Heim. You could practically hear Chao crack his knuckles in anger, but he had never exploded in a fit of rage in front of Sensei before and you doubt he would start now. Heim gave you a thumbs up before lazily resuming his spot among the other Awoo students who was intently watching your every move. It felt weird and kinda nerve-wracking to have everyone stare at you like this, but you shook it off quickly and tried to ignore the feeling. The rock felt heavy and clumsy in your hands, but it also gave way to a feeling in your gut that you couldn't quite understand. It made you feel calm and the nerve-wracking feeling from before disappeared all together. You almost didn't want to move an inch, but you followed Sensei's instructions dutifully and dipped the rock in the water.

"Wow~!" The others gasped just like you when the entire lake erupted in a silver light. Small orbs rose from the lake. Their bodies were too small to see clearly, but they shone like stars upon a clear night sky. They invited you to touch them, but you were too afraid to let go off the rock that was moving by itself in your hands underneath the water. From behind you, you could have sworn Sensei told someone off for trying to approach the lake, but his voice melted away in the face of the overwhelming feeling that washed over you from what had once been a rock in your hand. For what felt like hours to you, were only a few minutes in reality when Sensei finally gave you permission to pull whatever you had in your hands up from the water. The Lake stopped shining and you along with your fellow peers seemed dazed from the experience on both ends of the spectrum. When you finally regained some of your sense, you scanned the item in your hand. It was vertical and long, and it felt more like wood now than rock. A small line or a jack seemed to separate it into a long piece and a shorter one and it had patterns on it that you didn't recognize.

"Pull on the short end." Sensei enticed you and without further ado, you pulled at it. Out from the sheath came a shining metal blade attached to a firm grip and a guard. It was a sword!

"This is what the Hedge Stone is used for, Ming." Sensei finally answered her question out of the blue, which startled her. "When strong Yin meets an equal force of Yang, a connection is made. This connection is tailored to the mind, body, and energy of the one who helped achieve it. Lin helped Yin, the rock, meet Yang, the Lake, and a connection was made, which resulted in her new blade. Do you understand?" The class nodded. Some were still dumbfounded while others were eager to go next. Of course, Chao pushed his way up front to go first this time around. Heim didn't bother to challenge it nor did anyone else.

"Lin, you're free to stay and watch or go home. Today's trial is over. Great work. However, I must remind you that you're still not allowed to use the blade, so do not unsheathe it until tomorrow, understood?" Sensei strictly told you how things were going to be and you nodded, sheathing your sword. You only hoped you could hold true to your word until then.

You decided to stick around and see what your fellow peers got for kind of weapons, or 'tools' as Sensei called them. Over the course of several minutes you felt a small fraction of the wonderful feeling you felt while holding the rock in the lake, each time someone did the same. You even caught yourself taking a daring step towards the lake more times than once, but it was as if your blade then came to life inside your mind every time and restored your senses. It felt like you could actually depend on it for more than just slicing through things, which you had originally assumed was the only thing it was good for. Which would have also been fine.

Chao got himself a large sword that looked more like a lump of large iron stuck to a grip, but he claimed it was light as a feather. Sensei forbade him from swinging it around to prove his point. Ming got a similar sword as you, but its grip was longer, but the length of the blade itself was the same. Sensei said it was a 'Katana'. Another word you didn't quite understand, but a sword is a sword nonetheless. Heim got something weird though; Instead of becoming a weapon like the stones did for everyone else, they became like thick gauntlets for him. One thing was for sure; you wouldn't want to be punched by Heim ever again, not even jokingly. He seemed overwhelmingly satisfied with his new 'tools'.

When everything was said and done, Sensei jumped up on Chao's shoulder to get him back on track and get everyone's attention.

"I know this has been an exciting day for you so far, but you must all promise what Lin promised me; Do not use these tools until you come back here tomorrow. You are not yet attuned with them nor ready to fully grasp the meaning of possessing such a thing."

"Can't we just leave them here for the night then?" The Awoo boy who's name was Yaung suggested, and got several murderous glares staring into his back. Sensei shock his head with his almost non-existing neck.

"They are bound to you now. If they are away from you, they feel pain and sorrow. I don't want to hear their cries when I'm trying to sleep tonight. Now go home. I'm sure dinner will soon be on the table for most of you." And after that, Sensei leaped into the lake and swam home, leaving the group of Awoo kids looking at their new 'toys' with awe.

"I don't know about you guys, but I'm definitely going to go practice with my killer sword in the valley. Anyone wanna come?" Chao half-whispered to the group with a devilish smirk.

"Are you for real, Chao? He told us we're not ready and the first thing you suggest when he's gone is to break our promise to him?" You immediately voiced your well-founded concern and distaste for his plans.

"Of course Lin is too much of a pussy to do it. The ones who are too scared to test their new weapons can go home with Lin. I'm heading for the Valley, with or without you." Chao scoffed at you before he left.

This wasn't good. Who knows what might happen if he or the others goes through with it? He was your rival and mortal enemy sure, but you wouldn't want him to die before you could show him you're a better Guardian than him! On the other hand, would Sensei really entrust his students with tools that could kill them if they're used over one night? You doubted that.

All right, that was it for this session. The result of your choice will continue in this thread tomorrow (Sunday) at approximately the same time as this thread was started, give or take. If there's any change in that, I will post it on my twitter. There will be a pause in the quest for an hour during the GoT episode though.

If anyone has any questions, I'll happily answer anything that isn't technically akin to a "spoiler".

I will archive this thread at the /qst/ archive and here's my QM twitter: twitter.com/ShonenQM

Thank you for participating!
>>
>>223992
Good start, QM. This is showing some promise. I will try to pop in tomorrow, baring other distractions.

Simple mechanics stuff for now. How will we attain perks and up our skills? Will it he roll based? Accumulation of exp? Random choices we make? Will we be picking up negative traits/disadvantages as well?

I realise we're on the 'tutorial' so if they are expected to come up tomorrow, then don't feel like you must answer immediately.

See you tomorrow.
>>
>>223992
Cheers mate, good run.

Not sure if spoiler material, but are humans innately Red Flower touched or is it that they are lead/guided by those that are? Are they at gunpowder levels in terms of technology?

Just asking to prepare myself for the inevitable fuck-up in the barrier spells. Probably somehow Chao's fault.

I'm still planning for a lot of perks and I figure that most of them will probably be thrown out the window, but you gain a majority of them from choices made and some of them will affect the dice and the DC either positively or negatively, depending on what they are and in what situation you are in. I suck at keeping track and micro-managing XP, so I'm sorry to say that's out of the question though.

There will only be negative traits/disadvantages if you make huge mistakes or roll low on critical moments, but the ones I can think of from the top of my head would only be temporary.

Thanks!

>>224009
I cannot answer your first question, but I can tell you that the Humans are not at the gunpowder levels in terms of technology, but they are definitely more technologically advanced than the Creatures of the Forest.

Thanks!

As someone who has cataloged stuff in other quests That I am not even QM for... , I totally get that. Don't want to go to crazy.

I take it we will not be having crit success/fails in this wuest. Seeing as we had a rolled 1 earlier?
>>
>>224034
Unless a majority of people want critical success/fails, I will keep myself away from it. They are more prone to cause shitfests than happy moments.
>>
>>224037
I'd recommend including crits, otherwise the usual best of 3 will invariably result in success with no risk. And a crit-fail can result in interesting stuff, you seem like the kind of QM that would know how to work it instead of despair.
>>
>>224037
Fair enough. I can take em or leave em. If they just granted automatic positive or negative perks without compunding the success or failure.

Or, feel free to not use em'. Its your quest. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Instead of best roll, how about average roll?

Allows some fun results if we got low roll without shitfests from crit fails.

Like before we got 97 and 93 but the 1 results in average of 64.
>>
>>224078
Average rolls are the death of decent quests.
>>
>>224073
>Why haven't we had three pups and died in childbirth already?
Evidently Creatures of the Forest has different ideals and cultures than Humans and possible also life-spans and immune systems, so the issue of giving birth early and to a lot of children isn't that much of an issue?

If nothing else, I'll say "Muh Fantasy" until I can come up with a good and proper explanation.

>>224078
Hm, I'll give it some thought for the next thread or the one after that. Might figure something out. Thanks for the suggestion!
>>

Not so keen on that one. Especially because we're using such a huge swing of dice. You consider the DCs we may have to beat in a d100. I am not really a fan.
>>
>>224099
I'm considering changing it to 3d10, where two of the three rolled dices must meet the DC for it to be an overall success. Best of three 3d10. We'll see.

Chao disappeared into the scores of the thick forest, and left the others behind by the Hedge stone. There was an awkward silence in the air while the young Awoo teenagers tried to figure out whether they should go home and keep the promise to their Sensei like you strongly advised or give in to the overwhelming temptation and go test their new tools like Chao would. Despite what Sensei had told you, there was another difference between you and Chao; he could easily take charge in the group and convince them of something while you were left with average leadership skills at best. They only really listened to you if there wasn't any better option, and this wasn't the case at the time.

"Who knows what will happen if we use our tools before we're attuned? I think Sensei knows more than us on this and we should trust him, like we've always done before." You argued with the rest of the group, but the ones who didn't outright ignore you to run after Chao just shamefully cast their gaze to the ground in silence before they too went off to join the others at the valley a klick (1000 meters) away from the Lake. In the end, you were left standing about with Heim and Ai: The third Awoo girl in the group. Everyone else had gone after Chao, except Ming of course, whom dutifully dove back into the Lake to tell Sensei about her fellow peers' decision. He would sort them out in no time, but you couldn't help but feel a sort of anxious feeling about what might happen to the others. Maybe it was just a baseless worry after all?

>Ask Heim and Ai what they think you all should do and follow their advice.

You heaved a sigh and gazed over at the two Awoo remaining by your side; Heim was lazily swinging side to side, waiting for a decision to be made, while Ai was looking intently in your general direction. Were she waiting for Sensei in stoic silence or was she actually waiting for you to speak up and decide things for her? The only thing that you and Heim shared was your annoyance of Chao, but you hadn't ever spoken more than two or three words to Ai. She was always a carefree soul without much thought of herself or others, but she seemed different now. Was it the influence from the Guardian tool she received?

In her left hand she was holding onto a small stick with jade-coloured knobs on each end. You saw before that when she pressed a mechanism on it, the two ends of the stick released and flew outwards, turning a small stick into a long and sturdy staff of sorts. It looked like it was made out of dark wood. Everything but the jade knobs. Heim had his gauntlets equipped, not sure how to not 'unsheathe' them as Sensei had told them all not to do.

"What do you think we should do?" You inquired aloud to the both of them. Ai's gaze finally fixed itself on you instead of looking in your general direction, and Heim stopped swaying side to side.

"Let us proceed home." Ai answered curtly, and turned about and marched off towards the nearest forest opening that lead in the Village's direction. Heim only shrugged at you before he followed Ai.

Home it is then. Heim is usually not in the mood for anything and Ai has other people to play with. I'll leave them be until tomorrow. Question is, should I visit gran-gran before dinner or after? I did promise to have lunch with her today, but the first trial went on longer than Sensei had promised it would. Ah well.

>Visit Grandma

If there's anything I've learned on my own without Sensei's guidance, it's that a promise is a promise.

So it was decided; go meet with gran-gran. You hadn't visited her in the past two days after you always paid her a visit every day but getting ready for your Guardian trials, the same ones you had been waiting for as long as you could remember, had been a scary and nerve-wrecking experience. On one hand you felt ready, but on the other you didn't feel like you could handle the pressure just yet. That said, since you had now taken a step towards becoming a Guardian by completing the first trial, there was no going back. You were either going to become a Guardian or...

Well, no point getting worried over a small chance like that, right?

You shook your head to kill any thoughts surrounding the subject. Instead of heading south, you turned west, further away from the Lake and the Valley, and made your way through high grass that reached the shoulders of a grown Awoo. This meant that the grass straws were taller than you. Sound and smell had to be your guide through it, but you had done it so many times so you didn't get lost this time like the first time when you were 8. You panicked back then and ran around the high grass field for hours until your gran-gran sent her sparrow to get you.

With the high grass field left behind, you faced a beaten path heading up a hill, passing several blocks of white stones sitting about around the hill where your gran-gran's home stood meekly and 'ancient'. At the end of the path, in front of the house, sat a small white haired Awoo in her wooden chair that rocked with her forth and back overlooking the high grass field and even the lake beyond the forest between here and there. She noticed you before you could utter a word, her ears perked up and her face turned to you. Gran-gran was blind, but she could smell and hear better than anyone else in this side of the Forest Realm. Something you've grown to both appreciate and hate. With keen senses came more questions when gran-gran noticed things others wouldn't about you.

"So you finally decided to pay your soon-to-be-dead grandma a visit." Her facial expression was stoic and her tone cold, but you had grown used to this game between the two of you.

"I would have visited more often, but I always end up smelling like disease when I've been here too long." You replied firmly. The wind filled in the silence between the two of you. Eventually you couldn't hold it anymore and let go of a childish giggle and launched yourself into your grandma's arms, your tail wagging wildly about.

"Gran-gran!" You laughed and she couldn't hold her facade any longer either with your arms around her and gave way to a laugh and a bright smile as she embraced her only granddaughter.

"Lin, my little girl. I can smell something new hanging onto your robes. Are congratulations in order?" Her hands moved inquisitively down the side of your robes until they met the sheath that held your Guardian blade. Her hands shivered slightly at the touch of it and she sighed contently. "That's my girl."

>Tell her about the first trial, and the rest of your entire morning since you left the village.
>Ask her about her day.

Without slowing down in your stride or pace, you immediately began to tell your gran-gran all about your own day, from your stressful morning, the race to the lake (that you won for record), the lesson with Sensei, the Hedge stone, and how you got your Guardian Blade, and then also about Chao's usual stupidity and arrogance. She listened to your every word with care while you sat in her lap as she rocked back and forth oiner chair, a content smile ever upon her lips. Your fast, excitingly, and almost incomprehensible tale made the sparrow that once sat perched on the roof of the house take flight and it circled above you to see what all the noise was about.

"How has your day been, gran-gran?" You ended your quick story with a question, gazing up at your blind grandma. Her closed eyelids fluttered at your inquiry and she raised her head almost as if she looked out over the field before her. if you didn't know any better, it seemed like she was staring at something beyond it. She almost looked sad from your point of view, but that couldn't be right... Right?

"It's been alright, sweetie." A heavy sigh escaped her and she hugged you tight. This felt nice and all, but you couldn't help but feel like something was out of place. Usually she would go on for just as long as you, albeit slower, on her own day to day activities. Just because she was blind, didn't mean she were grounded in her chair on her small porch. She just sat there, holding you tight and against your better judgement, you remained silent and hugged her back.

Wait, wait, wait! Is she being like this because it's... time? NO! I mean no, no, no, no. It can't already be time for her to go. Right? Right? I should ask her, but how do I go about it? Or maybe I shouldn't? By the Tree, Lin!

However, as if she had read your mind, your gran-gran pulled on your nose. You gazed up at her warm smile and she shook her head at you.

"Don't be silly, sweetie." Her words comforted you more than you could ever explain. Had you not gone through the first Guardian trial this morning, the very thought of your gran-gran passing away would most certainly have sent you into a fit of crying and sobbing for hours. After your parents disappeared when you were younger, gran-gran were the only family left. She had taught you everything you needed to know to survive out in the woods and how to take care of the chores at home. She was even the one whom had told you about all the Guardian tales. You loved her more than anything upon this green earth.

>Continued

>>228082

You wanted to move in with her, but she had told you that it would be better for you if you lived in the Village so you could make friends. So far you had only made acquaintances in your class and a rival. Not a whole lot of friends.

"Anyway, what kind of tea would you like, sweetie?" Your gran-gran brought you back to reality after thinking to yourself for a while.

"Some honeyed sugar tea, please." You replied politely to which your beloved grandma only sighed and shook her head at.

"Quite the sugar-tooth, aren't you. You'll lose all your fangs before you're even an adult, I say." She muttered and laughed along with you. While your gran-gran made her way back into her house, you took a seat in her chair and rocked back and forth, and tried to see past the lake in the distance and see what was happening in the Valley. Hopefully Chao was getting an earful from Sensei. Alas, it was too far away for you to see with the naked eye. An Awoo only learns to zoom in with their eyesight when their bodies are done growing, which obviously wasn't the case for this 14 year old.

Now what to do while I wait for gran-gran?

It was time to conquer an enemy more ancient than Chao. Yes, one of THE old white rocks that laid about around the hill upon which your gran-gran's little house stood as a watchful old tower. It didn't matter that you could only see your Sensei's lake, a small glimpse of the Village, and the World Tree in the horizon from up there. However, you did spot something you didn't recognize flying in a straight line upwards, heading further and further south, towards the World Tree. It was kinda shining, but you figured it was a rare bird race you hadn't been taught about yet by the Village elders and shrugged it off.

But you digressed; the stone! The rock! Your enemy! A few years ago you couldn't climb it. There just wasn't enough foothold for a little child to pull herself up, but now you had the arm strength AND the reach to do it! Your time had come. The white rock's doom loomed over the horizon and it beckoned you to rise to the challenge of the century!

Cracking a smile, you shook your head at your own silliness as you made your way yonder. From behind, you heard steps upon the porch and the smell of honeyed tea reached your nose. Alas, your mission came first. Only after you've shown your gran-gran that you could conquer this rock, would you have proven deserved of her delicious home brewed tea.

"Are you going to take another crack at the old nemesis?" Your gran-gran joked with you, but you were dead serious.

"You'll see, gran-gran." You replied, looking back at her with a smile and pretending to look serious without caring about the obvious faux pas on your part. "When I stand up here yo--"

However, you never got to finish your cheesy line.

The roaring sound of something large heading your way, swirling through the afternoon sky, made you instinctively duck. Looking up, you saw it all: One second your gran-gran stood there with a smile on her porch with her sparrow taking off from her shoulder and the next, she and her house was burrowed under a large boulder that came crashing down from the sky. From nowhere. The boulder sent broken wood pieces flying over you and crashed into the white rock behind you.

Your mind was empty, your body stiff, and it felt like your heart had jumped up into your throat, blocking all air to your lungs. You stood there, gasping for air, and stared at the boulder that had crashed down upon the hill and had dug your gran-gran's early grave. Your heart dropped from your throat and you were starting to shake violently, almost falling into a panic attack. An unknown smell in the distance made you cough violently and brought you to your knees in front of the destroyed hill.

wha--!

With every fiber in your body and with every ounce of strength you had left in your almost shattered mind, you rejected the shock that wanted to roll over you and paralyze you until kingdom come. You were down on all four, and your breathing were ragged. Not from exhaustion, but from the poisonous air heading your way. It resembled something you could only describe as thick, black clouds rising from the very edges of the Forest, where the last magical wall from the barrier spell was supposed to be.

WHAT IS HAPPENING?!

A voice more akin to a stranger than your usual inner monologue screamed at you inside you mind. It kept going and going, and you were close to losing your mind.

"Shut up! Shut up! SHUT UP!" You let out a bloodcurdling scream at the voice inside your head, finally silencing it. An uneasy feeling mixed with anxiousness, fear, and anger rose inside of you like the red sun rises at dawn. Who had done this? Who could have done this? Your gran-gran didn't DESERVE this! WHO was responsible?! Where could you find answers to your questions and an outlet for the rage burning alongside the fear gripping your spine?

>Stay at the ruined hill. Collect yourself, try to calm down, and regain your senses before making drastic decisions.

Your mind raced in all directions and called you to an action while your gut urged for another. Sensei taught you that listening to your mind is the trademark of a good Guardian, but someone who could tell if their gut feeling was right or wrong was a great Guardian, and you knew from the bottom of your heart, that your gut were right this time. No mistake about it. You moved away from the poisonous cloud and leaned against the nearest white rock and took a deep breath.

The anger, anxiousness, and fear still dominated your throbbing mind. It was honestly hard to think properly. You wanted to cry so badly, but no tears would come. It was as if everything you felt and the adrenaline rushing through your body pushed the sorrow to the very corners of your mind until the situation was resolved and your survival secured. An instinct.

Nonetheless, you couldn't seem to properly calm down and focus on your options. Your eyes darted to the Guardian Blade hanging firmly tangled into your robes. When you held it before, it calmed you down to your very core, but that meant pulling it from its sheath.

Dare you break the promise you made with Sensei to calm yourself enough to make a logical choice before it was too late or would you continue to try without it?

It calmed me down before, it can do so again, but if I always fall back on my blade I'll be helpless the one day I stand without it...

Instead, we will use our forest smarts (play on street smarts, get it?) to combat whatever caused the explosion. We will resort to our blade if we get cornered for maximum dramatic tension.

What? Hell no, if it comes to actual combat we should draw the blade and use that bad-boy for all it's worth. But we can't be relying on it as an emotional crutch in non-lethal situations, which is what we are in now.

We're panicking and alone, not engaged in combat.

>No. This was a practical lesson your Sensei had warned you about. Everything the Guardians of old learned wasn't just from their teachers. It was also from the battlefields. [Do not rely on the Guardian Blade]

I have to try. I can't always rely on the blade, it just won't work in the long run. I'll never be a dependable Guardian if I cannot do my duty without the blade by my side. I must control it, not let it control me.

You wanted to rely on it, and it probably wanted you to rely on it too so it could be useful, but you couldn't let the blade define what sort of Guardian you would become. This was a lesson of strength of mind in and off itself. So you took a knee beside the rock, steadied your breathing, and stared intensively on one of the smashed wooden planks lying in the grass. Your gran-gran's house had been dark brown, like the wood it was made out of. This wooden piece was partially red.

Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out. Calm yourself and collect the shattered pieces of your once innocent mind. Your first taste of true emotional suffering awaited you in the nearest future, but for now you remained numb to anything but your immediate situation.

However, no matter what you did, no matter what techniques you used that Sensei had taught you, your body and mind refused to calm down. Everything remained on high alert and it took several seconds to just sort out an actual thought from something blurry and incomprehensible racing about in your head. In the end, you made a tough choice that would create an obstacle you'd have to overcome later down the road to becoming the Strongest Guardian:

You pulled the Guardian Blade from its sheath in raw desperation to regain your composure and mind. The blade lit up for a second before the light faded off the metal. As it did so, everything turned back to normal for you; a clear head, full control of your body, and what felt like an unlimited amount of stamina washed over you.
You might have made a mistake, but at least you'll live to deal with it another day.

[Disadvantage: It controls you - For now it's almost impossible for you to enter a fight/battle without your Blade, and only it, by your side.]

"Has your Sensei ever told you how the Awoo joined the Forest, sweetie? No? They didn't always walk among the trees. We weren't always the proud and peaceful race that we are now. Back then we would stalk the edges or even venture inside the green lands while the Forest was yet young, and growing out from the World Tree. We hunted the Creatures of the Forest. We were predators, and mindless ones at that. White wolves, is what they called us. Do you know who it was that taught us self-control, and how to think outside of acting on our survival instincts? Whom, against his better judgement as a Guardian, took the White Wolves under his wing? The Great Horned Owl. When every other Creature feared us and would sooner see us all die than to help us become more than mindless animals, he chose nobility over necessity. We are the peaceful, yet just Awoo today and not the bloodthirsty White Wolves that we used to be thanks to that Owl and it is for this reason, Lin, that every Awoo will lay his or her life down in service for the Guardian we consider to be our Father. The one who gave us our chance."

---

You rose from the ground, and swiped the dust from your knees. Before you laid the ruined hill where your dead gran-gran's house had once stood and she with it. You had made a makeshift grave with the only wooden plank you could find intact and nearby. With your Guardian Blade, you had carved 'gran-gran' onto it and burrowed it into the ground in front of the giant boulder. This was her resting place and you swore that you'd never forget her last warm smile. With the help of your blade, you had regained your composure, control of your mind and body, and you felt refreshed and ready to run and jump for miles if you had to.

You turned your back to the ruined hill, never once looking back, and descended down it, heading towards where you had decided to go. This was the only clear destination for you.

While seeking out the source of the black air rising in the distance, or running back to the Village was enticing options, you felt it in your bones that if there was anything you had to do now, it was to seek out Sensei and the others, especially the former. With your Guardian Blade drawn, you leaped through the high grass and into the thick scores of the forest, finally leaving the ruined hill behind, obscured from thought and sight. The time for sorrows would come later, but now was the time for answers.

With a steady pace, you jumped from rock to rock, never once losing balance thanks to the overwhelming harmony and control you felt emanating from your drawn sword. It was a good, yet perplexed feeling. The thought of trying your new-found balance on the tree branches struck your mind, but this wasn't the time for experimenting with the 'abilities' your Guardian Blade gave you.

You reached Sensei's lake sooner than you had anticipated, but to your surprise you found it just as empty and tranquil as this morning. It was as if nothing had happened over at the ruined hill in this timeless place. That is, until you saw a figure leap out from the forest on the other side of the lake; It was Chao and he was holding onto another Awoo in his arms. Your rival crashed to the ground instead of gracefully setting the landing like he did earlier that day. Both of them looked exhausted and wounded. With quick steps, you ran to him, and he spotted you before you arrived to him. He greeted you with a mouth hung agape and his eyes staring at you in shock.

"W-what did you just do, Lin?!" He half stammered once you arrived to his side. You immediately took note that his face was half black from something unknown, he didn't have his Guardian weapon with him, and he was holding onto an unconscious Ming in his arms. She had a jack in her head that were bleeding slowly.

"I just ran to you. What has happened? Where's Sensei and the others?"

"You ran to me?!" He raised his voice at you, ignoring your question, "By the Tree, you just ran over the lake, Lin! Straight across it!" He was visible angry and still in shock from something. You threw a look behind you, not sure what he was talking about. The Lake remained as untouched and unmoved as it had been when you got here. He must have hit his head on the way here.

"It doesn't matter what you saw, Chao." You tried your best to dodge his weird words and get some answers of your own. "Where are the others, Chao? What's happening?"

Chao didn't answer you. Instead, he rose from the ground, leaving the unconscious Ming at your feet.

"I'm getting my sword back. Sensei told me to take her back to the Village, but you should do it instead." His tone and attitude changed drastically from shocked to a cold and distant one. Trying to get an answer out him felt like it could be a waste of time, which was absolutely precious right now. So many things felt wrong, on several levels, but you had to make a decision before Chao storms off.

It was as if a different Lin took control when you made your intentions perfectly clear to your Guardian Blade; With your left hand, you grabbed onto the neck of Chao's robes and with your right foot you tripped his balance and sent him crashing into the ground. It all happened even faster than your mind could register. it was as if your body moved on its own according to what you wanted to do. He let out pained grunt and furiously glared at you in silence. He must be going through all sorts of things right now, possible even the same things you did. Hopefully you could help him overcome them on his own instead of relying on his Guardian tool like you had to do.

"You've lost your Guardian sword, and Sensei told you to take Ming back to the Village. You're exhausted and maybe even injured. I still have my blade, I'm not tired in the least, and Sensei didn't entrust me with Ming." You stated the hard cold facts to him at point blank range, "By the Tree! Get up, Chao, and for once in your life, do what is required of you! Not for me and not for Sensei, but for Ming! She needs you right now."

Chao's glare died down and it was replaced with a defeated, albeit frustrated, look. He heaved a sigh before he rose, bring Ming with him up in his arms.

"Can you promise me that you'll fetch my sword, Lin? I would do the same for you?" He asked while backing away from you, getting ready to run towards the Village.

I think the fact that you forced us to draw the weapon was somewhat harsh considering the resulting malus. I get that we failed the check, but I was expecting that to result in a loss of consciousness or mental breakdown, not in the completely opposite action coming to pass.

Other than that you're doing really good, and I'm loving how frequent the threads are.

Personally, I am on the side that was a little disheartened by the picking up the sword action too. More because of the penalty/negative quirk. It seemed very severe, but I suppose it works. And the fact that there was a 'for now' means that we can potentially remove it, through roleplay over time or better rolls in the future.

Besides, I am sure it will lead to some interesting situations now. Especially with Sensei. So I will enjoy the ride for now. And just hope for improved fortunes in the future.

>Don't promise him. You shouldn't make promises you're not sure you can uphold.

You wished there was silence between the two of you so there would be a moment to think, but when the sudden eruption of a sound akin to the one that almost tore your eardrums to pieces when the boulder hit your gran-gran's house came from the Valley, it evaporated your previous thoughts. It felt as if the ground shook with the explosion and the trees reacted to a brutal wind force coming a thousand yards away. Your knees almost gave way to the wind, but the Guardian Blade gave you renewed strength. Chao cowered to the wind force, but remained on both feet, holding Ming tight in his arms.

"I can't promise that." You finally answered him when the wind had left the area. Chao seemed stunned from what had just happened, but he quickly picked himself together. He had a grim look upon his face, but in the end he nodded.

"At least try." Was the last thing he said before he turned about and carried Ming away in the general direction of the Village. You nodded to yourself, steadying your body and mind for what unknown things awaited you at the Valley where the explosion had come from before you took off. Were Sensei and the others okay? What had caused the massive explosion? What was this thick black air rising from more than one location around the forest now? As you rushed through the forest, leaping from stone to stone, you watched as a lot of critters ran past you and the birds that you spotted between the tall forest rooftops were also flying away from where you were heading. Despite the help from your Guardian Blade, fear kept creeping up in the back of your head, but you were determined to prove yourself as a Guardian, even if you weren't a full fledged one at the time.

As long as I can carry this blade and protect the Forest with it, my age and inexperience doesn't matter. I will make you proud, Sensei!

It was nothing like you could ever have prepared yourself for. The Valley was just about gone; in its place there was a huge dark crater with black air rising from it steadily. You spotted unknown creatures wearing silver clothes that looked almost like the metal of your blade and it covered their entire bodies, from head to toes. They stood on the opposite side of the crater and there was a lot of them too. Your gaze followed what they were looking at down in the crater, and the sight was horrifying: From here you could see most of the bodies of your fellow Awoo peers, all torn and charred. Their empty looks stared back at you and it shook your very soul and existence. However, you still didn't tear up. The blade in your hand kept you intact. You had a feeling that everything would hit you hard once you sheathed your blade.

Amidst the charred crater that had once been a beautiful and lively valley, two large beings fought tirelessly and desperately with limb and fists. One of them had green skin and the other had a pale color of white and pink. They were both naked and they were tall and large enough to at least rival the ruined hill in height.

But where was Sensei? Was he dead too?

Impossible... Right?

>Try to sneak closer to the weird figures in metal clothes at the other side.

With the on-going fight between the two towering giants down in the crater, you decided that venturing down there would be too dangerous right now. Once one of them won or they both killed each other, you could easily sneak down there and get what you needed and look for Sensei and any survivors. For now, you needed to sate your growing curiosity. Who were these figures in metal clothes? Where did they come from? You had never seen them nor these giants ever before in the forest, nor had anyone, not even Sensei, told you about them. They presented something new, something unexplored to your teenage mind and you had to get answers.

You still knew enough about the intact parts of the Forest surrounding the crater to navigate your way to the figures without being detected. You didn't want to blow this chance to observe them or alarm them of your presence if they proved to be hostile. You might have had your Guardian Blade with you, but like Sensei said, it was still not attuned to you and you didn't have the faintest idea on how to actually fight. At most, you've swung some sticks around when you played pretend-guardian with Chao when you were younger and that play-to-play experience amounted to nothing in the face of real foes.

You found your place up on a thick branch, covered by the leaves and bushes of the tree. From here, you could observe the figures from nearby and above. Most of them were silent, and only a few of them were talking in a tongue foreign to you. It was a harsh and crude language. Some of them were even laughing at the sight of the two giants fighting it out down below. You spotted some chinks in their metal clothes here and there, but it didn't seem large enough for you to drive your blade into it. Could your Guardian Blade even pierce their metal clothes if struck head on? Maybe, but you weren't about to test it out. From what you could see, they counted up to about 15, and this was only the ones in your sight. Who knew how many more stood by the ridge, away from your eyes? You could at least hear, and smell, more of them, but you hadn't learned to separate them to count, so it proved difficult to determine how many there were. From behind, you could hear more of them coming your way, but as long as they didn't look up, they wouldn't catch sight of you.

Suddenly it was as if your Guardian Blade cried out to you in your mind, trying to tell you something. You shook your head violently, not sure what to make of it, but it wouldn't stop. It kept you calm as promised, but its crying was starting to annoy you. Then you smelt it; the black air was nearby. You had trouble breathing and if you stuck around, you might cough and reveal your position.

However, you felt something sweet, something warm, and something beautiful heading your way from behind with the approaching figures. It called out to you amidst your blade's crying and screaming inside your head. It was a soothing feeling.

What is this wonderful bliss? It feels... amazing. I can... barely think. Whaa~!

It's the Red Flower, and if it's not, it's liable to get us killed anyway.

Sorry Chao. We're just going to have to hope we can get it back another time.

Eh, we don't know for sure that it's that way. Might get lucky

I'll add that staying will give you a [+] to knowledge, but with added risks. I will make sure to include this kind of information on further choices. I will increase voting time by a couple of minutes if people wish to change their votes.

Much as it is a good perk. Risk is not worth it right now. We can pick up more knowledge another time.

We can still hope sensei can teach us...right? Right?

ah fuck it, I'll change to approach, bonuses are just too tempting for me

With the help of your blade, you got a grip over yourself before you did something you'd regret. The thick black air was starting to invade your throat and lungs more and more, so you made the choice to leave the vicinity immediately. There was probably nothing to be gained from sticking around and that unknown temptation seemed far more dangerous than pleasant once you had escaped its gripping trance.

You leaped down onto the ground and moved from bush to bush, avoiding the gazes of the weird and possibly dangerous figures as you moved further and further away from them. It took a few minutes, but once you got back to where you initially came out from the forest to gaze upon the crater, you no longer felt the pushing feeling from the unknown source in your head. Your Guardian Blade at calmed down as well, which made things easier for you. The two giants were still fighting it out down in the crater while more and more of those figures gathered at the ridge on the other side. There must have at least been hundreds of them watching the fight unfold. Where did they all come from? You had an extremely bad feeling about all of this and you had been ignoring it for a while now, but it was too overwhelming at this point.

Are these figures in metal clothes... Humans? If so, how did they get past the first barrier?! It wouldn't allow anything even remotely related to the Red Flower past it!

However, you didn't get more time to think on it when the green giant planted its fist into the face of the pale giant, sending it reeling to the ground in silence, knocked out cold. The giant then staggered backwards towards you for a second before regaining balance and turned around, facing you where you stood upon the ridge, visible only to him from this distance.

He had the exact same eyes as Sensei...

"By the Tree..." You murmured in disbelief, staring at the green giant whom stared back with an expressionless frog-like face.

"Sensei?"

Thanks for running.

Well, at least we found him. And we can probably get Chao's weapon back.

Trying to figure out by numbers how many young Awoo's left alive right now. By my count, including Lin we're at like, five, maybe? Assuming Ming, Heim and Ai are still alive.

Good thread mate, I will keep my eyes open.

>>232454
At this rate we're going to be the Greatest Guardian simply by virtue of default.

Thanks a bunch!

>Assuming Ming, Heim and Ai are still alive.
One can only hope.
>>
>>232472
To be fair, I assume nothing. Especially seeing as Ming has a jack currently embeddes in her forehead. Going to uave to hope for some village elder magic for that one.
>>
>>232427
Is there any height differences between the humans and the Awoo?
>>
>>232664
Some fully grown humans are as short as an Awoo and some fully grown Awoo are as tall as Humans. Although In general, an adult Awoo is shorter than an adult Human, but not by a whole lot. Children/teenagers are about the same height.

At least we made it through a thread before it got posted. That's longer than I could have hoped for.
