===============

You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

After spending dinner with Svekkan royalty and a few other of your acquaintances, you decided to walk Esyllt back to her home. The streets of Aurwain aren't too dangerous at the moment, but you can't take any chances. Things are bound to get a little underhanded soon, even if the first person to draw daggers and stab someone in the back might very well be you.

"Thank you for the invitation, your highness," Esyllt says. "It wasn't as profitable as I expected, but it was still quite enjoyable."

"As my mother and my advisor like to remind me, socializing is also part of work," you say. "It's important to find and maintain contacts. The entertainment is just an added incentive."

"That's how I usually treat these things as well," Esyllt says, "although I haven't gotten very many invitations for the Crown Prince's wedding. Ceri's position is still quite low, so we're having difficulty meeting with the nobility."

That's definitely something you can help her with, if you choose to put your mind to it.

>[Sovereign/1d10] "I can tell the nobility that you're someone worth knowing."

If Esyllt wants to go out more often, you might as well indulge her. You have a literal roster of dates to accompany you, but you also have a lot of functions to attend. Bringing Esyllt along won't be too much trouble.

"You could always join me whenever you have some time," you say. "I have quite the list of parties to attend."

"That sounds delightful, your highness," Esyllt says. "I'll also think about what you said about finding challenges. Perhaps it will make things more interesting for me."

"I certainly hope so," you say. "I couldn't bear to spend so much time doing something I don't enjoy. It'd be nothing but tedium after a short while."

You bid Esyllt good night and return to the palace. You know you'll have a busy day tomorrow; you need to check up on Eleri, and Olstren's representatives are scheduled to arrive during the day.

That's tomorrow though. You still have a few hours left to the evening.

You decide to pay Olwen a "visit." You're not sure how much time you'll have for her over the next few days, and you don't want her to feel left out. You go to her room and lightly knock on the door.

"It's me," you say. "Can I come in?"

"I'm not dressed," Olwen says, "so yes, go ahead."

Despite her claims to the contrary, Olwen is dressed in her nightgown. Still, it's exciting in its own way.

"I had some free time," you say, "so I thought I'd drop by and see how you were doing."

"Dinner was interesting," Olwen says. "Esyllt and Agda are both nice women, but Laila seems a little shy for all this business."

"I look forward to spending more time with them," you say. "We need to maintain friendly relations with Svekka, at least."

"I'm sure you'll say the same thing about Olstren and Rosea once the other 'candidates' arrive," Olwen says. "In the meantime, I assume you're here for the usual."

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't."

"Hold on a second." Olwen looks through one of her drawers and pulls out some silk rope and an intricate collar. "The usual is fine, but I won't mind if you want to be a little more in charge."

>[Sovereign/1d12] "You know what? Let's see where this goes."

"You know what? Let's see where this goes."

Olwen is positively beaming with glee. You tie the silk collar around her neck and lay her down on the bed so you can tie her down.

"You know this can all go horribly, horribly wrong right?"

"I still want to try it," she says. "I mean, I spend an hour every day exercising or training with my sword, and I've been taking orders from you for years. It just doesn't feel right if you're not being forceful."

Well, you certainly can't disappoint Olwen.

Olwen certainly doesn't look disappointed when you wake up the next morning.

"Good morning, your highness," she says. "Also, that was our new usual. You can ask one of the other women if you want something more normal."

"I'll be sure to ask them their preferences when it's socially appropriate to do so," you say. "We wouldn't want any disappointments."

The two of you very reluctantly get out of bed and clean up for another day of work. Olwen has her own duties to take care of with the guards, which leaves you alone to talk with Myrddin over breakfast.

"Any problems with Princess Agda and Laila?"

"They seem quite satisfied, your highness," Myrddin says. "They asked the kitchen to prepare some Gwyrden specialties, which I'm taking as a good sign."

"I'm glad they're taking advantage of our hospitality," you say. "What about our more pressing problems?"

"I've looked into the matter with Lloyd," Myrddin says. "As I already mentioned, they're being pushed out of their usual social circle by Cadryff, but you can deal with that later. I've also found out that some of their creditors are heavily leaning on them to repay certain loans ahead of time or with greater interests than they'd originally agreed."

You grind your teeth and clench your fists in anger. Petty nobles are one thing, but this situation is becoming more and more unacceptable.

First, however, you need to decide what you're going to do about those moneylenders.

"Are any of the creditors related to my uncle?"

"There are some distant ties, but I think it's just a coincidence," Myrddin says. "I don't think this is a calculated attack against you."

It may not be deliberate, but it's still a slap to your face.

Myrddin's people will stop the problem from getting worse, but you still need to clean up the mess. You need to compensate the Lloyds at least a little.

"Come, Myrddin," you say. "We need to pay Master Lloyd and his daughter a visit."

"Do show some consideration, your highness," Myrddin says. "It'd be understandable if they were upset with you, but they're not in a position to say it. Things are bound to be a little awkward."

"I'll manage, Myrddin."

Master Lloyd has a small private studio in Aurwain for him and his daughter. It's a small affair by noble standards, but for a commoner, even one with several wealthy patrons, it must be ridiculously expensive. Myrddin knocks on the door a few times, and Master Lloyd comes to answer. His face looks haggard, but that may very well be his default expression. He seems only slightly shocked to see you.

"You are…" He speaks in a dull monotone. "Your highness?"

"Greetings, Master Lloyd," Myrddin says. "His highness and I have some business to discuss with you, if you're available."

"Of course," Evan Lloyd says. "Please, follow me."

He brings you to a small office on the first floor of the house and prepares some tea. In the background, you can hear Eleri singing opera.

"How may I be of service, your highness?"

"Ah, yes." Master Lloyd coughs awkwardly. "Recently… it's been difficult."

"This and that are different issues," Myrddin says, "and you won't have to worry about those difficulties anymore."

"Is… is that so?"

"In that case, thank you for your patronage, your highness." Master Lloyd stands to bow. "We will exert our utmost effort to meet your expectations."

"There's no need for you to go that far," you say. "So long as you keep going as you have so far, it's fine. In any case, Myrddin can go over the details. Would you mind if I spoke to your daughter in the meantime?"

"Yes, that would be appropriate," Master Lloyd says. "She's practicing in the veranda, at the back of the house."

"Thank you."

You leave Myrddin and Master Lloyd to work out the details of the patronage and go looking for Eleri. It's not that hard; you just need to follow the sound of her voice. As you reach the veranda, your hand hovers by the door knob and you hesitate. You don't want to disturb her, so you open the door as quietly as possible and enter.

Eleri continues to sing for some time before she spots you from the corner of her eye.

"It's you," she says, her voice flat, sad even. "I wasn't sure if I'd seen you again."

"I've been busy," you say. "I haven't had time for parties, unfortunately."

"There haven't been any parties," Eleri says, "not since rumours spread that I was one of the prince's women."

Your mouth suddenly feels very dry, and you struggle to think of something to say.

"That's -"

"I was always proud of my performances," Eleri interrupts you, her eyes moist with tears. "Whether it was singing or dancing, I always did my best, but none of it mattered did it? The lessons, the practice, the recitals, the performances, all the effort I put into my work - what did it matter? Was it all just because men wanted me to become their toy? Was that the only thing that mattered? Tell me, what was the point of everything?"

Eleri's voice cracks and she starts crying openly. She slips her shoulder straps off and lets the top of her dress fall. She isn't wearing anything underneath it.

"This is what you wanted, isn't it?" She asks. "This is why you're here, just like all the others? You never cared about my dancing, did you?"

"Your effort matters to me." You calmly walk up to Eleri while maintaining eye contact. You want to show her beyond a doubt that you're not the least bit distract by her body. It helps a little that you spent last night with Olwen. "I appreciate the effort you put into your performances. I enjoyed dancing with you, and I think your singing voice sounds beautiful."

You carefully slip Eleri's shoulder straps back up her arms and give her a hug. Her body is stiff for a moment, but she soon leans on you and cries into your chest. You hold her and gently stroke her hair until she calms down.

"I'm sorry," she whispers. "I shouldn't have gotten angry at you."

"That's not something worth apologizing for," you say. "People have tried to kill me. This isn't much in comparison."

"You shouldn't say things like that so casually," Eleri says. "But thank you. Just… when I showed you my… my chest… could you not…"

"I'll pretend it never happened."

Eleri extricates herself and you give her a handkerchief so she can wipe her tears. Her dress is still a little ruffled, but she looks much more relieved now than she did a few seconds ago.

"Thank you for coming to see me, your highness," Eleri says. "I'm happy you didn't forget about me."

"I imagine we'll be seeing each other more often," you say. "I've decided to become your patron. My advisor is making the arrangements with your father."

"That's wonderful!" This time, it's Eleri who gives you a hug. "I promise I'll perform just for you."

"I look forward to it," you say with a smile. "Come on, let's go see your father."

"I just need a moment to clean myself up a little."

Eleri briefly ducks into a nearby washroom to adjust her dress and clean her face properly. Afterwards, you follow her to her father's office, where Master Lloyd and Myrddin are casually chatting.

"Oh, your highness, I see things went well," Myrddin says. "We've just finished the arrangements here. The money has been prepared and with that other issue dealt with, there shouldn't be any problems."

"Excellent work, Myrddin," you say. "As always."

"Eleri, I shouldn't have to tell you that this is a great opportunity for you," Evan Lloyd tells his daughter. "You'll have to continue to work hard. Your mother will be very proud when she hears the news."

"Of course, father," Eleri says. "I've already promised his highness to perform for him. I won't disgrace myself."

"The Crown Prince's wedding celebrations are quite busy, so I'm afraid I can't stay much longer," you say. "Eleri, I'm sure we'll see each other again quite soon."

"I'll await your request, your highness."

With your business done, you take your leave of the Lloyds. Fortunately, they seem to be in much better spirits than they were before your visit.

"That went quite well," Myrddin says. "What about you, your highness? What did you talk about with Miss Eleri?"

"It was more… dramatic than I'd anticipated," you admit. "Still, I think she badly needed someone to talk to. I'm glad I could help her."

"That's excellent," Myrddin says. "Now, although I don't want to be disrespectful to you or your acquaintances, I'm afraid your next appointment is coming up soon. We can't dawdle."

"Right, Princess Reagan." You heard she was coming by boat, so Myrddin wouldn't have much news about her, but she should be at the port soon.

There's no political advantage from meeting someone at the dock. That's just showing personal favor and screwing ourselves over in the long run.

"Let's meet her at the port," you say.

"Are you scared of what she'll do to you if you don't greet her in person?" Myrddin asks.

"No, I just want to talk with her privately for a bit," you say.

Your plan has certain problems. For one thing, it's extremely difficult to determine when exactly a ship will arrive. As a result, you spend several hours sitting at various cafes and waiting for Princess Reagan to arrive.

It's not wasted time though. Myrddin's spies bring you some of the ledgers you've been waiting for. The secret ones are written in code, but it shouldn't take you too long to figure them out. You just need to track recent expenses and gambling losses to get a good guess at who borrowed money when. The rest is just a question of stalking the relevant parties until you can find evidence that they met the moneylenders. In the meantime, the less illegal debts are still good fodder for scandals, extortion and blackmail.

After several hours, a ship bearing the Olstren flag and other royal markings arrive at the port.

"It seems our guest has finally arrived," you say. "Let's go."

The boathands and the guards get off first to tie the boat down and set up a defensive perimeter.

Then Princess Reagan appears alongside her maidservant. Her eyes briefly meet yours, but she doesn't acknowledge your presence until she sets food on dry ground and stands before you.

"It has been a while, your highness." Princess Reagan smiles warmly. "I'm surprised you came to greet me in person."

"Surprised, but pleased, I hope?"

>I thought the marriage candidates were fairly equal.

Not really. Reagan gives us the potential to sit on/put our dynasty on the Ostern throne, provided we can do away with some troublesome nobles. Svekka Princess can get us better tech/dosh, but they're are about get French Revolutioned any day now by merchants. Aleksandra isn't even a princess, but can provide us the most immediate military support. Keep in mind that marrying a Rosean will piss many in our home country off, too. Reagan holds the most potential for gain.
>>
>>271466
>but they're are about get French Revolutioned any day now by merchants
We can prevent that.
>>
>>271456
It's not to her we need to worry about. We're pretty much the designated alliance builder and politico for our kingdom. We can use our marriage talks and bargaining for that. If we give off the impression Reagan is a shoe in the others won't bother and it will cost us an opportunity. Furthermore Reagan will not try nearly as hard to win us over, meaning we as a faction suffer for it. It's a political fuck up.

>>271466
Given our only competition politically is Uncle, money and military are going to be Far far far more important.
>>

Agda has higher potential but more risk, Reagan has less potential but less risk.

>>271475
NEVER trust a merchant, anon.
>>
>>271483
What makes you believe that? Don't you trust Esyllt? Bad goy.
>>
>>271480
Agda does not have more potential. Putting your dynasty on the throne of another nation, potentially forming a future union is basically the ultimate prize of any noble house. Seriously, we need to go Hapsburg mode.
>>
>>271422
It's not the end of the world, we may even be able to use it to encourage more competition between wife candidates. We do need to make it clear it is still undecided

>>271432
We really shouldn't, this whole event is a great chance to actually learn things about our various candidates, not just what they would like to present

>>271456
But we deliberately kept that under wraps, the rumors would be small. This is going to send messages, we need to watch out what exactly is being said before decisions are taken out of hands

>>271466
Dealing with Olstern's nobles is also going to require a lot of attention, which distracts us from our uncle and family. If we actually become king, even mores, as we will have to run an actual country.

Svekka's a situation that could lead to problems with our own merchants if we ignore it, and dealing with it leaves us better able to personally deal with our own country's problems. Similar results after dealing with Aleksandra's country, we get land and money, and we can still support the crown from within.
>>
>>271492
Wouldn't it be a matrilinear marriage since she has higher rank?
>>
>>271492
Having a title and having power are two different things, anon. We're not chasing after becoming a king; we do what we do because we want to protect our kingdom. Pursuing Reagan could make us king of Olstren, yes, but Svekka is much more wealthy and powerful, which is why it's in consideration in the first place.
>>
From my point of view Reagan is the best choice if we want power for ourselves and either svekka or the other one would be better for our kingdom.

Out of the corner of your eye, you see some of the boathands glance around and disappear into the crowd.

That's not suspicious at all.

"I'm always pleased to see your highness," Princess Reagan says.

"I hope you had a safe voyage," you say. "A woman traveling with a crew of dubious men seems like a dangerous journey."

"The ship's crew were selected by name," Princess Reagan says. "I'm more concerned about Aurwain, sadly. In a city like this, people can simply disappear."

So she's aware that there were assassins on the ship, but they couldn't kill her without taking the blame. Now that she's in Aurwain, however, her death couldn't be traced back to anyone, except perhaps the Crown. It is, after all, your responsibility to protect your guests.

The assassins can't attack in the streets - there are too many guards around - but they might have an opportunity to strike during the wedding. It's a good thing you ordered Myrddin to put spies everywhere. The assassins won't be difficult to track.

"I assure you, the streets are safe at the moment," you say. "There won't be any dangers on your way to the palace."

"I'm glad to hear that," Princess Reagan says, "but I am slightly concerned about my servants. Will you be able to find their accommodations?"

You suspect you know which "servants" Reagan is referring to.

Svekka's problems are going to get really messy, really quickly. It's going to lead to problems for everyone no matter what, but we can handle matters at home. What we can't do is prevent the Revolution, in all likelihood, and our goal of not getting Guillotined by angry Revolutionaries may never be realised.

Our whole character has been built around dealing with nobles and court intrigue, and that's what we would need to deal with if we marry Reagan. We are not as adept at dealing with merchants.

>>271503
Not sure, I don't think the QM ever gave an answer on that.

>>271506
Svekka is not our neighbor and dealing with a revolution is not the best strategy for securing a base of power. Also: with a title comes influence, and with influence -- leverage correctly -- comes power. We have the potential to form a union with Ostern and double our realm's size, only a fool would squander that opportunity.

I believe I talked about it for either Reagan or Agda. Either way, it's something you can negotiate. Agda's hold on her position is stronger than Reagan's, so convincing her would take more work, but it wouldn't be impossible.

Just like Svekka, the "unify Olstren with our kingdom" strategy has a lot of ifs in it.

I still think it's best to keep options open, like I said earlier. We don't need to rush to a conclusion before we have ample time to talk to all of the girls.
>>
>>271605
Waifufags won't listen anon.

As long as we don't do something stupid and marry a maid or something, I can accept that.

Btw, can we serious try to get our brother to not marry this damn maid, or at least divorce her down the line?

We also need to try and hook our sister up with some royal bachelors, so let's keep and eye out for that too.
>>
>>271552
Treating Olstern like it's a future vassal state is begging for trouble. We also don't know Reagan's plans for the future, something we need to know about ANY of our future prospects. Doubling 'our' realm's size also comes with a slew of new problems: there will be more nobles we will need to deal with, more traitors to hunt down, more formalities to distract; we deal with problems everyday, just imagine the increase we'll get when we're dealing with our own nutsoid families AND Baron von Traitorfuck causing trouble an entire KINGDOM away!

"Finding their accommodations won't be a problem," you say. "If they wish to enjoy the festivities, they just need to let me know. I have friends in most places, and they'll be happy to take care of things."

"Oh my." Reagan cups her cheek and blushes slightly. "I'm ashamed to admit that I'd underestimated your highness' preparations. I didn't expect you to be so thorough."

"How can I not take precautions when your highness' welfare is at stake?" You smile and offer Reagan your hand, which she takes. "Please, allow me to escort you to the palace, at least."

"I believe I shall enjoy that very much."

You're confident that Reagan isn't in any immediate danger, so you don't need to summon additional guards from the palace.

You will, however, have to make sure she's safe in the palace, and that those assassins are dealt with as soon as possible. You simply can't allow them to accomplish their goals, nor will you permit any disturbances during your brother's wedding. As dour as his temperament can be, he's still you're brother, and you'll damn well make sure that he'll enjoy his wedding celebrations in total piece of mind. If some assassins need to die in an alley somewhere to make that happen, it's a very small price to pay.
>>
>>271627

In that case, marrying mom would keep our lineage the purest.

That's it for today's thread. Lots of major plot points this time around.

Eleri's breakdown is something I planned a while ago. I'm trying to make all the characters as distinct as possible and Eleri, being an artist, is more passionate than most.

The assassins coming after Reagan was also something I had decided a few threads in advance. The key to dealing with them efficiently and without causing a disturbance was asking Myrddin to put spies everywhere, which you did. Going to the docks just gave you an opportunity to expedite the process a little.

Regarding the waifus, you'll get a chance to review what all the political advantages and risks are and to negotiate what you want out of the deal, so you'll know what you're getting into when you make a final decision. The same thing goes for consorts and concubines. Keep talking about it though; it's really fun to see an active playerbase on my end.

The next thread will be Sunday June 19th at around 7PM EDT. Until then, thanks for playing and goodnight. If you have any questions, just post them here and I'll answer them if/when I can.
>>
>>271669
I'm saying that Reagan gives us the greatest potential for gain. Stop being so combative and shitting up the thread by being so hostile to opposing points of view.

You're projecting things and willingly giving up political advantage over assumptions and things you can't be sure of. That's stupid. YOu don't rush in, you don't go in with only one pic on your mind to the exclusion of all else either. That is a massive recipe to get fucked over. You wait, develop your options equally and see where they all lead. Committing early can only hurt us.
>>
>>271683
Night man, thanks for letting us see down the Eleri route, I hope we get to see a good amount of all the girls before decision time. I was a bit disappointed we didn't get some more face time with Agda, still haven't got much of a feel for her yet.

>>271640
I wonder if that's why the maid didn't show up to dinner, might have to check on that.

>>271660
Fair enough. I guess it would be more like if we got like a bunch more Uncle's as well as all the stuff we got going on now.

>>271692
I'm worried Rhonwen is a really good salesman, I'd be hesitant to pick her until we actually see her prototypes. Just 'cause trains work in our world doesn't mean magic trains will work in this one.

Esyllt seems good, no real red flags there

Eleri, I'm not sure about. She's very good at her craft, but I haven't seen her strengths outside of that.

>>271825
>I'd at least choose the hottest one, Alexandra.
I'm actually a little bummed no one's made a case for her, she's got a good situation to carve out some profit without distracting us terribly, and her campaign would play to our greatest strength. Plus she seemed like a cool lady.
>>
>>271683
OP, could you add a timestamp to the skill level list in the pastebin? Just a "last updated: beginning of thread X" or something like that. Because I'm never sure if the list is up to date or how far behind the count is.

And in the opening post, I think the first sentence (You are ... head firmly attached to your body) would fit better above the ======= because it never changes, in contrast to the rest of the post after it.

Thanks for the thread.
