Demons. Eldjötnar. Oni. Asura. Jinn. Monsters.

Whatever they are called, they now rule the world. On December 21st, 2012, the barrier separating Earth from what is now called the Eskathos ruptured, and these twisted creatures emerged from the Breach to gorge themselves upon the flesh and souls of humanity and sate their endless appetite for wrath, pride, envy, insincerity, falseness, boasting, and bellicosity.

Mad Wendigo spreads frozen wastelands and devours all those unlucky enough to cross its path. Radiant Lucifer spreads his devout cult of personality throughout the world. Jealous Andhaka abducts the wives of his despairing subjects. Two-faced Shezmu drowns northern Africa in orgies of wine and blood. Hidden Vucub-Caquix usurps day and night in South America. Arrogant Arachne weaves her monstrous fashion out of hair shaved from the heads of beautiful maidens. Evil-eyed Balor wages war and battle in Ireland and its neighbors to expand his kingdom.

Demons were not the only ones to return, however. Soon after the Breach opened, the Relics awakened their power. Only these men and women, mortal embodiments of divine weapons and tools, hold the power to match the forces of the Eskathos.

Excalibur and its Sheath arose first, followed by the Thunderbolt, the Tower of Babel, the Brahmastra, Gungnir, the Was and the Smoking Mirror.

The Relics defend human civilization and gather their strength until the day comes when they can lay siege to the Breach and assail the Eskathos itself.

You are one of them.

A deformed hand covered in pulsing black tumors bursts out of the ground and latches onto your ankle. You struggle to get away and fall face-first. You dig your fingers into the dirt, trying to pull yourself away, but you are young and weak and afraid and you can't fight back. Behind you, the ground parts and a twisted child-like goblin emerges.

It is a dream, and you remember it well. It is your first encounter with the Fomorians.

The goblin's jaw unhinges itself as a snake's would. It leans down to devour you whole, and even though you are more than twice its size, you know it can fit you inside its stomach.

Even now, aware as you are that this happened years ago and that it is only a dream, you feel a pang of terror run through your body; some fears are not easily quelled.

Then the light appears. For the first time, your Relic awakens, and you are no longer weak. You reach out with your hand and grasp…

- a Celtic blade wrapped in wind
- a bronze shield with a reflective surface
- a sturdy silk ribbon
- a bow and a quiver of poisoned arrows

There is a burst of light, and the Fomorian is knocked away. Inside your chest, you feel the warmth and companionship of your Relic. It was always there; you simply did not realize it until now.

Unyielding Gleipnir floats in the air and coils itself around you protectively.

"Greetings, my master," the ribbon speaks in your mind. "My strength holds the jaws of Fenrir shut. I will not permit your enemies to escape me."

You stand up and look around. The village is burning, and it will take time before rescuers can arrive. After all, this place is far away from the front lines, and no one expected Balor to send his forces in from underground.

Behind you, the goblin is getting back on its feet.

- Fight the goblin. You're strong now, and you can take it.
- Run away. It can't catch up to you now.
- Lure the goblin into a trap. There's an old well around here you can use.
- Rally the village's defenders. You need to get organized.
- Use your new Relic. You want to see its power.

Gained Divinity C.

You point at the monster and will Gleipnir to kill it. The ribbon cuts through the air and wraps itself around the goblin, hauling it up in the sky.

The goblin struggles and screams effortlessly. Before the horrified gaze of its kin, it is whole body is covered by Gleipnir. The ribbon compresses the goblin, and not a single drop of blood slips through. The goblin shrinks to half its size, than a quarter. When Gleipnir uncoils itself and lets the creature drop, its head is the size of a raisin, its limbs are as thin as straws and its blood has congealed to stone under the immense pressure.

"Your orders have been accomplished, master," Gleipnir says. "What shall we do now?"

Your display of power has stalled the carnage, but it's only a matter of time before the goblins renew their frenzy. You must act quickly

- Hold the goblins back on your own so the villagers can flee.
- Run for help. You can't do this alone.
- Find a defensive position. You need a tactical advantage.

Gained Intelligence D.

You look around for some place to hide and spot the village church. The belltower provides both cover and good view of the area. You'd see the goblins coming, and you would have the high ground.

Taking a deep breath, you make a mad dash for the church and scramble up the stairs to the top of the belltower. You look around and evaluate the situation.

The goblins are beginning their rampage again, but the people are huddled together in groups and fighting back. The flow of casualties hasn't been completely halted, but it has been stemmed for the moment. The village might be able to last long enough for reinforcements to arrive now.

- Challenge the goblins to a fight and attract them to your position.
- Run around and bring as many people as you can to the church.
- Coordinate the defense from your current position.
- Wait for a miracle.

Gained Charisma D.

You take out your phone and call your cousin in the police department. He picks and you tell him what you see. He gives you some other numbers to call and the next thing you know, you're in charge of the village's entire defense. Soon after, the King arrives with ̶

Something squeezes your arm and you're finally pulled out of your half-dreaming state. You notice your cell phone is ringing; that's probably why Gleipnir woke you up. You look at the caller and groan.

"Hello, Francis," you say. "What do you want?"

"Hey, Eamon!" Francis says on the other end of the line. "I need a favor."

"Oh, really?" Your eye twitches slightly. "You can't be bothered to make a five second trip to Dublin to pick me up, but you can ask me for a favor."

"I'm not the one who does the patrol schedules, and the UK's outside our jurisdiction anyway," Francis says. "Besides, I figured the flight would give you time to get over your break up."

"It wasn't a break up," you say. "I got rejected. It's completely different."

"Yeah, you keep telling yourself that, you Irish drunkard. But seriously, there's a murder of Crows headed towards your plane and my current turret's only been doing this for about a week, so you can either crash in the Atlantic or do me a solid. What do you say?"

As much as you hate to admit it, Francis makes a very compelling argument. You stand up and take your carry-on bag. It's the only luggage you had anyway.

"I'll be there in a minute," you say. "Can you pick me up?"

"No problemo," Francis says. "You have jumped out of a passenger plane before, right?"

"Yeah, I know how it goes," you say. "Fifty seconds left. Don't miss."

You hang up the phone and head towards the back of the plane. One of the stewardesses stops you to ask where you're going; you show her your identification and she very politely shows you how to get to the cargo hold. You tell her to inform the pilots that the cargo hold is about to be depressurized, and that it's no cause for concern.

For safety reasons, the door to the cargo hold are airtight. You shut them behind you and pull the emergency lever to open the cargo doors. The alarms blare and the wind threatens to suck you out of the plane. You resist just enough to jump out on your own power and fall through the sky.

Two seconds later, you land in a crouch. You're now on a golden airship, protected from the wind even though you should be completely exposed. You have to admit, Francis can be a pain in the ass, but he's damn good at his job and his Relic, the Vimana is one of the best transports available.

- Get a situation report from Francis.
- Go find out who the "turret" is. You'd like to know who you'll be fighting with.

You decide to find out who the turret is. You'd like to know who you'll be fighting with, and it's not like you need a detailed status report against something like Crows. You've never fought them personally, but you have read the reports and they really aren't that impressive.

You look around the Vimana's open deck and see a woman with sliver-blue hair. In her hand, she holds a silver bow. It seems you found who you were looking for. You walk towards her to introduce yourself.

"Hello," you say. "My name's Eamon. I'm transferring to New York, and Francis asked me for a favour."

"Greetings." The woman flicks her hair, which was already flowing in the wind, and your stomach starts to sink. "Today, you have the great fortune of meeting the great Selene Argyris, wielder of the Silver Bow, and success to Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt. You may now worship me."

Shit. She's one of those. A lot of people with Relics are just mostly ordinary people stuck doing extraordinary jobs, but some people like Selene are a little too enthusiastic about it.

- "…I should go see Francis now."
- "Well, it's nice to meet you."
- "Sure, I can do that. Have you got any preferences for shrines or temples?"

"Well, it's nice to meet you." You slowly back away from the crazy lady. "I'm looking forward to a good hunt together."

Selene snorts and flicks her hair again. "I assure you, your presence here is entirely unnecessary. My bow shall never miss its mark." She turns her gaze to the horizon once more.

Yep. Definitely crazy. After talking to her, Francis is going to be a vacation.

Then you find Francis lounging in the pilot seat and reading Playboy. He's still wearing those stupid shirts of his.

Perhaps you should have crashed in the Atlantic instead.

"Hey, Eamon, thanks for coming, man," Francis says. "I was afraid I'd be stuck with… well, you've met Selene."

"That I have, Francis," you say. "Is everyone in New York like that, or just her?"

"Nah, she's unique," Francis answers. "The Wendigo's different, you know? It wanders a lot, so it's all guerilla warfare. We have to keep our veterans spread out across North America, so HQ gets the newbies who are being transferred in. They get used to it after a while, or…"

"Or they die," you finish his sentence for him. "So, what's the problem?"

"Just an ordinary murder of Crows," Francis says. "I would have let the new kid take care of it on her own, but since you were in the area and I really don't want to be the one to lose her on her first mission. I feel a whole lot better with you around, buddy."

"This does beat flying in coach," you say. "Okay. Are we doing this?"

"Hell yeah!" Francis grins. "I was waiting on you."

Francis taps the arm of his chair and you're enveloped by light. The next thing you know, you're right next to a flock of crows.

"Could have used a little more warning, Francis."

"You'll be fine. Just make sure the newbie doesn't die."

The Wendigo's weapons are winter and undead abominations. These crows are no exception. Their beady eyes are bright red and every movement of their wing scatters crimson drops of blood. You can smell the rotten meat that hangs off their flesh despite the wind.

Selene nocks an arrow to her bow and you move to stand a short distance behind her. You pull back your sleeve so Gleipnir can uncoil itself.

"I am ready for battle, master," your Relic says.

A silver arrow streaks through the murder of crows, killing dozens of them, but not enough to significantly cut down on their numbers. She clicks her tongue and prepares another arrow. At this rate, you'll be here all day.

Gleipnir isn't a famous combat Relic. However, it's considered first-rate for crowd control. Its power allows you to tangle opponents' limbs or clamp down on their muscles. If an opponent is a brute, you can cripple its strength. If an opponent is fast, you can cripple its speed. If an opponent is balanced, you can cripple its strength and speed, although splitting Gleipnir's power like that will reduce your effectiveness. It's worth it if the situation calls for it though.

"Bind their speed and strength, Gleipnir."

"Yes, master."

The ribbon stretches out towards the crow and frays threads plucked from a woman's beard. They wrap themselves around the crows, trapping their wings, talons and beaks. The undead creatures can't even scream in outrage in their current state, and their formation is falling apart.

"Such a pointless Relic," Selene says. "A weapon that can't kill the enemy might as well not existence."

"I don't need your commentary." You scowl at her, but now's not the time for an argument.

The crows glare at you with baleful eyes that remind you too much of Balor's and dive towards you, intending to kill the both of you through whatever means they have available.

You dodge and weave around the Crow's attack. Although your physical body isn't that remarkable, it's still enhance by your connection to Gleipnir. She just needs to mature a little.

Your arm lashes out like a whip and catches several Crows right in the head. Unable to withstand the attack, they drop to the Vimana's deck. You slide across the battlefield, using the momentum of your strange movements to kill as many of the beasts as possible.

Selene puts up her own efforts as well, skewering the Crows with her silver arrows. Her attacks are accurate, but they're too slow to significantly bring down too many enemies. Your killing is much faster than hers.

The Crows end their pass in a disorganized flock. They are weakened and bloodied, but they are not out of the fight yet. One good hit will finish them off though.

You command Gleipnir to wrap itself around your arms and hold out your hands on either side of your body. Then you bring them together with all your might in an ear-shattering clap.

A soundwave expands outward from you and crashes into the Crows, shattering their bones. Even Selene stumbles at the sheer force of your blow.

The Crows fall by the dozen, and the few who remain disperse. Gleipnir coils itself comfortably around your arm and you can finally relax.

"Well done, you two!" Francis walks down to pat you on the back. "Knew you could do it! So how does it feel to win your first battle, newbie?"

"I still say I could have done this on my own," Selene says. "There was no need for interlopers."

"My transfer to the New York HQ was approved last week at the Commander's request," you say. "So, no, I'm not an interloper."

"Anyone who interferes with my battles is an interloper!"

"Now, now, newbie," Francis says. "Calm down, will you? You shouldn't bicker with your teammate right after a victory. Besides, we'll be home in a minute and you know how the Commander feels about teamwork."

While it's tempting to contemplate the newbie's tragic demise at the hands of a Crow or Ghouls - and you are not looking forward to dealing with those bity little fuckers - you were a newbie yourself back in the day. You know what the initial rush of power is like, and what happens when that power turns out to not be enough. You might as well do the responsible thing for once.

"So that was your first fight, eh?" You ask. "Tell me honestly, what did you think about it?"

"As I said," Selene answers, "I could have won this battle alone. You can go back to your knitting."

You sigh and run your hand through your hair. "I've been doing this for three years, you know," you say. "Fought the Fomorians, fought Balor for about ten seconds before I realized what I was doing and ran for my life, fought the Fallen Choirs when Lucifer came for a visit… and I saw a lot of good people, some with much better Relics than yours, die in those battles. You're not a goddess; you're just someone with a goddess' weapon. Don't forget that."

There's another flash of light and the Vimana is flying above the city of New York. Selene remains silent. You keep staring at her, waiting for her to relent.

"… I'll keep your words in mind."

"Good, that's all I ask," you say. "But if you could find the time to worship me, that'd be great. I could use a morale boost right now."

Selene's ears burn red and she wriggles in her spot. You crack a smile and leave her alone for a bit.

The Vimana lands on top of a downtown building and slowly fades away, depositing you on the roof. Selene enters the building first, while Francis gives you the introduction.

"Welcome to the North American Relic Operations Headquarters, Eamon," he says. "We coordinate with twenty different teams across the continent to make sure the Wendigo doesn't drop his white shit on anything important. Where do you want go first?"

- "Take me to the Commander immediately."
- "After that fight, I could use a shower."
- "We have apartments on base, right?"

"After that fight," you say, "I could use a shower."

Francis grins. "Sure thing, man," he says. "You do look like a total mess, and we have luxury accommodations for combat personnel. Just follow me!"

The showers aren't too far from the landing pad. As Francis said, they are luxury accommodations. The lockers are keyed to your fingerprints, there's marble everywhere, the background music is calm and soothing, there are several baths and there's a shelf with a broad selection of soaps and shampoos.

"There you go," Francis says. "I'll let the Commander know you're here. You can come by for a debriefing once you're ready."

"All right, thanks."

You take off your clothes, grab a spare towel and hit the closest shower stall. You weren't aware of it during the fight, but even with the Vimana's protection, high altitudes are incredibly cold. The warm shower does you a lot of good.

"Selene, have you returned?"

You close your eyes and slam your head against the wall. That is not a man's voice.

"I heard you were victorious. How was your first battle?"

That is not a man's voice at all. Fucking Francis.

"Selene's not here," you say. "I'm the new transfer."

There's a short yelp, followed by a lot of chattering in a language you don't recognize. It sounds vaguely Japanese.

"No, no, this is no problem," the woman mumbles just loud enough to hear. "The manual said the showers were not segregated, so this is normal. And the commander said there was a new person coming last week." The woman pauses to clear her throat. "I am Sakurai Natsumi… no, it is Natsumi Sakurai here. It is a pleasure to meet you."

"Eamon O'Byrne," you say. "Pleasure's mine."

"I heard you were a veteran," Natsumi says. "I am eager to learn from your wisdom and experience."

You hear water coming from the shower stall next to yours.

Yeah. This is going to be awkward.

And that's all for tonight's session. The next one will be Sunday July 24th at 7PM EDT in this very thread. I'm also considering doing a Saturday run for Beleaguered Prince Quest later today. Running quests three days in a row is tiring, but I might be able to pull it off this once. I'll see how it goes.

As usual, you can check my Twitter account @BeleagueredQM for updates.

So far, Relic Quest is looking pretty okay for a starting quest. The tags are fun, but it looks like I'm going to have to do a better job of checking them. It's quite embarrassing when a whole post turns red.

Thanks for playing and I'll see you all next time.

Thanks for running. Good thing you announced your plans in BPQ so I knew to look out for this thread.

I guess there are the seven enemies listed in the OP. But how many Relics are there? There seem to be a lot more, since we already meet 2 others.
>>
>>399653
>But how many Relics are there?

A lot. Numbers vary as people awaken their Relics and as Relic-wielders die, but there's usually around 400 total. North America has about 100 because they need to cover a lot of ground, but the UK only has 30 or so because the battle lines there are fairly well-defined and don't move much.

How is this supposed to work? Do you get out of the shower first? Do you wait for Natsumi to get out first? Do you just ask her?

And now you can hear Natsumi humming from her stall.

"We don't have to shower at the same time if this makes you uncomfortable, you know," you tell her, hoping she'll catch a hint.

"But the manual says this is normal behavior between soldiers on the front lines," Natsumi says. "We are supposed to use the communal showers because they are closest to the helipad in case of emergency. Besides, my superiors in Japan told me gender does not matter on the battlefield."

What the fuck is wrong with Japan? Of course gender matters on the battlefield. In fact, you've seen several Relics that are based on gender, like the Girdle of Aphrodite.

And who cares about the manual? Everyone in the UK either showered in their apartments or, if they were deployed in the field, didn't shower at all unless it rained. You only read the manual because they wouldn't let you enlist otherwise.

You wonder how many of Francis' bones you can break before he becomes combat-ineffective.

Still, you're stuck here, so you might as well get to know your new team-mate.

- "So, what's your Relic?"

You decide to make some small talk. That's safe, right?"

"Are you a new recruit?" You ask. "Francis told me the New York staff was fairly new."

"Yes," Natsumi answers, still completely oblivious to the fact you're both in the shower. "I obtained my Relic three weeks ago, and the Commander requested that I transfer here to strengthen her forces."

Interesting she'd come to New York; Japan tends to send its people to India instead. If the Commander is gathering a lot of new Relics, she must have something in mind.

"What's your Relic?"

"I am the proud wielder of Ame-no-Ohabari," Natsumi says. "Although it is not the most famous blade in Japan, it is a highly respected divine weapon. I am honored to wield it."

Ame-no-Ohabari… You took a crash course on mythology years ago when you obtained Gleipnir, and you kept yourself up to date in the meantime, but there are a lot of Relics and Japan isn't your field of expertise. The name is vaguely familiar though.

"Is that the sword used by Izanagi to kill Kagu-tsuchi?"

"It is!" Natsumi answers. "I am impressed that you know it. Few people outside Japan do."

You lean back a little to properly slam your forehead against the wall. Although it's difficult to tell what, exactly, a Relic does based on its myths, it's possible to make an educated guess with enough experience.

Ame-no-Ohabari should be a sword that cuts fire, turning it into water or sealing it into dormancy underground. It would be absolutely lethal against the likes of Lucifer but against the likes of the Wendigo, it's just a really sharp sword.

"Are you all right, Eamon?" Natsumi asks. "I think I heard a strange sound?"

"I'm fine."

You're fine, but Natsumi's really not.

- "If we're every in a fight, just stick with me."
- "Remember to be careful in battle. There's no need to take risks."

"Remember to be careful in battle," you say. "There's no need to take risks."

If Natsumi was transferred to New York, she must be needed for something. You can't tell her to go away, and you can't always look after her; she needs to learn to look after herself. This is the best advice you can give her at the moment.

"Thank you, Eamon," Natsumi says. "I will keep that in mind."

You take the longest shower of your life and wash yourself all over twice before Natsumi finally leaves and it's finally safe for you to get out.

Francis is waiting for you right outside the bathroom. He's got a massive smirk on his oh-so-punchable face.

"Hey, man," he says. "How'd you like that shower? You sure took a while."

"How have you not been arrested for sexual harassment yet?"

He shrugs his shoulder. "I don't make the rules," he says. "Hell, I don't even break them; it's all in the manual. Besides, New York has the best tits on the planet. Learn to enjoy them. It might help you get over that woman."

"How would you know?" You ask. "And how old are those girls anyway?"

"I have a vivid imagination, and the shirts around here don't hide much," Francis says. "And Selene's 16. Natsumi and Orianne are 17."

You grab a nearby chair and push it towards Francis.

"Why don't you take a seat over there?"

"Hey, I'm just 19," he says. "There's nothing immoral about what I say or do. You're the old pervert here."

"Right." You give Francis a flat look. "Where to next?"

"I can take you to the Commander," he says, "or we can take a detour and I can introduce you to our other team-mate."

- "Take me the commander then."

"I'd like to know what I'm getting into," you say. "Who's the other member of the team?"

"Orianne first then," Francis says. "She should be in the lounge. Follow me."

Francis leads you through two flights of stairs ̶ the elevators take too long for him ̶ and brings you to a luxurious lounge with a view on the ocean. Plush leather seats, dim lighting, moody music, a full bar ̶ fighting to save the world sure gets you decent accommodations, even if no one is above legal drinking age in New York, including you.

"Hey, Orianne!" Francis calls out to a pretty blond sitting by the window. "The new guy wanted to say hello. His girlfriend dumped him so I'm hoping you can cheer him up."

"I wasn't dumped, Francis," you remind him. "I was rejected. There's a difference. Learn it."

The girl stands up and walks over to you.

"But it's still painful, no?" She asks with a subtle French accent. "Hopefully, your time here will be more pleasant. My name is Orianne Marchand. It's a pleasure to meet you…"

"Eamon O'Byrne," you introduce yourself, "formerly from the Fomorian Defense Line."

Orianne raises an eyebrow. "That is a very dangerous battle front," she says. "Your skills must be impressive."

"I get by." You pull your sleeve back to reveal Gleipnir. "I have my own role in a team, and I know how to work with it."

"I suppose that's true for all of us," Orianne says. She picks up a sheath and draws the sword it contains. "We each have your own duties."

The sword vaguely reminds you of Excalibur, although the hilt isn't as ornate and the blade isn't as sharp. You do feel a slight pressure coming from the sword.

"This is…" You sift through your memories for the sword's image. "Joyeuse?"

Orianne smiles. "That's correct," she says. "It is the French sword of kings which slays heretics and empowers the loyal. I'm quite fond of it." She returns the sword to its sheath.

So, New York has the Silver Bow for ranged attacks, Ame-no-Ohabari for close-range attacks, Joyeuse for close-range attacks and support, the Vimana for mobility and now your Gleipnir for control. The match is a bit rough, but the roles are surprisingly well-rounded.

"Looks like New York has an interesting team," you say. "It's still a little rough around the edges."

"We are still lacking in experience," Orianne says. "Francis never takes us anywhere. Selene just had her turn, but what about the rest of us?"

"Oh no, I'm not going there," Francis says. "Teasing's only fun when I'm not on the receiving end. "Besides, I need to take Eamon here to see the Commander."

"Of course," Orianne says. "It was a pleasure to meet you, Eamon. Don't be afraid to come by my room if you need anything."

"The pleasure's all mine, I assure you."

With the introductions and pleasantries over with, Francis escorts you to a command centre in the heart of the building, far from any windows. Some people like for their briefing rooms to have a view. Those people get blown up by terrorists ̶ or worse.

Francis knocks on the door. "I've brought Eamon with me, Commander."

You have no idea how anyone could have heard him ̶ you don't spot any cameras or microphones around ̶ but the door swings open and you enter.

"O'Byrne, welcome to New York."

Commander Sarah Blumstein, the Tower of Babel, is in charge of all operations in North America. She coordinates the teams, keeps track of the Wendigo as much as anyone can and sends out reinforcements when necessary. She's been at this several years younger than you, no small accomplishment even if you consider she has a support-type Relic.

"What can I do for you, Commander?"

The Commander looks at Francis and jerks her head towards the door. He gets the message and quietly exits, leaving the two of you alone. This must be really serious.

The Commander sits at her desk and steeples her fingers.

"I need you to help me kill the Wendigo."

"Bullshit," you say. "There have been attempts to kill the Wendigo, Balor, Lucifer and the rest of them for years, and nothing's worked."

"It's not a question of whether or not we can do it anymore," the Commander says. "We have to do it." She presses a button on her desk and the screen behind her displays North America's declining demographics.

You understand her point, but that doesn't make her task any more possible.

"How does your Gleipnir work, exactly?"

You raise your arm and your Relic unwinds itself. "I can reduce the enemy's strength or speed," you explain. "I can decide how much power I put into it, or dedicate 'excess' power to get through defenses, but it'd still take a miracle to pierce the Wendigo's defenses. Realistically, even decreasing its strength or speed by one rank would be difficult."

"One rank is all we need," the Commander says. "That's enough to make it slow enough to catch or weak enough to endure. Besides, I don't expect you to fight alone."

That's not much of a comfort, especially if she expects you to fight with the rest of the New York squad. You have no doubt they're competent, but they're still too green to fight the Wendigo.

- "Your team is too inexperienced for this."
- "Okay, fine. What's your plan?"
- "Why start with the Wendigo?"

"Why start with the Wendigo?" You ask. "Considering the squad you put together, there are more vulnerable targets.

"If we force Andhaka into a corner, casualties from collateral will reach at least one billion," the Commander says, "two if China gets dragged into it. Granted, that's a worst-case scenario, but Balor is the 'safest' target and he could still take 50 million people down with him if he tried."

Right, the bosses established their powerbases around major population centers, but Francis mentioned the Wendigo was different. It roams across North America with a disorganized mob. It has no base and no army. Even if you back it into a corner and it goes berserk, it won't be able to cause more damage than normal.

"The Wendigo's mobility is its greatest strength," you say, "but it can also be its weakness. I can see that. That can't be all of it though."

"It's the most important part," the Commander says, "but there are other considerations."

She presses another button and the map projected behind her displays a list of all the outposts under her command, as well as their Relics. In total, there are roughly a hundred Relics divided among twenty bases to protect North America from the Wendigo. It's a significant force.

"If we can kill the Wendigo," the Commander continues, "I can free up a hundred Relics and send them to the other battlefronts. It won't make an immediate difference, but it will at least allow us to maintain the status quo until we can come up with a plan that won't get a quarter of Earth's population killed."

You consider the Commander's words. From that perspective, the Wendigo does make an attractive target and as she said, you have to do this whether or not it's possible at this point.

That's still not a plan though.

- "This still isn't good enough."
- "You'll need to train your squad if you want this to work."
- "Okay. How do you want to make this happen?"

"You'll need to train your squad if you want this to work," you say. "Even if I can tie down the Wendigo ̶ and I can't make any promises about that ̶ we'll still need someone to bring it down."

"Funny you should mention that." The Commander presses yet another button and the screen is replaced with mission assignments. "I like to organize extermination missions every now and then. It keeps the Wendigo's forces down and delays his attacks on major settlements. Since you're a control-type and you're the closest thing we have to a veteran in New York, I'm letting you lead the next one."

Assignments and threat assessments follow the same general format, so you can read the ones in front of you.

The first mission is in the wilderness, which means Crows, Maneating Hares and possibly Werewolves. The first two are fast, but relatively weak, while the Werewolves are fast and strong.

The second assignment is close to a ruined city. It wasn't a major urban centers, but it's probably still a haven for Ghouls. They're tough and fast, but not as much as the Werewolves.

The last mission is close to an ongoing blizzard. The Wendigo uses these to breed Ice Beasts, monsters superior to Werewolves in every way, and which have some protection from Relics. They are extremely dangerous opponents, but you can take them if you're careful.

"I'll take the first mission."

It's the best choice for you. You've already fought Crows, and Maneating Hares and Werewolves aren't that tough according to the threat assessments. Besides, Gleipnir is a powerful equalizer.

"Very well," the Commander says. "Briefing will be tomorrow at 0900, and you'll be taking the whole team with you. Any questions?"

"None at the moment, Commander," you say. "I'll let you know if I think of something between now and the briefing."

"In that case, you're dismissed, O'Byrne. Quarters are on the 12th floor and the door will have your name on it. It's fingerprint-locked, but you're already in the system, so there shouldn't be any problems."

Gained Endurance D.

You're too Irish to deal with all this shit sober, so you decide to go back to the lounge for a drink or two before going to bed. And hey, you have a drinking buddy!

You slide into a seat next to a Japanese woman you're going to assume is Natsumi before you make an ass out of yourself.

"Hi again," you say. "Mind if I join you for a drink?"

"Who ̶̶ Oh, is that you Eamon?" Natsumi asks. "I did not see you when we were in the shower, so…"

The bartender chokes a little. You nod to Natsumi and drop some bills on the counter.

"Irish whiskey, please," you say. "I didn't take you for a drinker."

"My sen- seniors told me it was an ideal way to get to know my new comrades," Natsumi says. "And I just received my first paycheck, so I finally have the money."

"That usually works best if you have company while you drink." The bartender just gives you the bottle along with glasses and a bucket of ice. "But since I'm here, I'll show you how it's done."

You pour two glasses and down yours in one shot. Natsumi follows your example, no matter how much you tell her to slow down. You start singing when you're a quarter of the way through the bottle.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlzWRQ5e4qg

The whiskey might as well be water to you, but Natsumi can't quite keep up with your pace. She's getting dizzy fast, and you decide to call your drinking session before you have to haul her to the bathroom and hold her hair while she throws up.

"Come on, kid," you say as you prop Natsumi up and help her to her room, "we've got a big day ahead of us tomorrow."

The morning hangover isn't worthy of the name; one good Bloody Mary and it goes away.

You clean up to the best of your ability and head down to the briefing room for a rehash of what you already know. The Commander and Francis are already there, and you help yourself to a cup of coffee while waiting for the rest of the gang.

"'Morning, Eamon," Francis says. "I heard Natsumi had a hell of a party last night. I hope you weren't too rough on her."

"We were just drinking, Francis," you say. "It's not my fault I'm better at it than she is."

"O'Byrne, don't get my people drunk," the Commander says. "You're the one who has to deal with them, and I don't want them getting killed because of a hangover."

"Yes, ma'am."

Everyone needs a coping mechanism. You defaulted to alcohol because you're Irish, but it's also healthier than smoking, and women…

Yeah. That's not something you want to think about at the moment.

Selene and Orianne arrive next, and Natsumi comes in last, clutching at her head. The Commander frowns at her, but doesn't scold her in public. You rather hope she won't scold her privately either; you'd feel terribly guilty about it. Probably.

"Now that we're all here," the Commander says, "your next assignment is a simple search and destroy to keep the Wendigo's forces down. O'Byrne will be in charge of the operation."

"The threat level is low, so I want to treat this as a teamwork exercise," you say. "First, however, I'd like confirmation of what you can do with your Relics. I can make an educated guess, but since you all awoke your Relics recently, I want to know what you can do right now."

"Joyeuse can empower coordinated attacks," Orianne says. "It makes them easier to pull off."

"At the moment, my Silver Bow can track down prey," Selene says. "It's not completely accurate, but all I need to do is loose an arrow and it will fly towards the nearest enemy.

Natsumi stifles a pained groan. "Ame-no-Ohabari can make attacks that are based on fire weaker," she says. "I am afraid that is all I can do at the moment."

- "Okay, I can work with this."
- "We have a lot of tactical options. Let's use them."
- "No matter what, stick with me and be careful."

"We have a lot of tactical options available," you say, "so let's find out how we can use them."

You still have no idea what you're going to do with Ame-no-Ohabari, but now isn't the time to rain on anyone's parade.

"The area of operation this time is Thunder Bay," the Commander says. "The Wendigo turned it into permafrost years ago, but there hasn't been any activity there recently. Just go in, kill everything you see, and come back safe."

"This will be a simple task, Commander," Selene says. "It hardly seems worth sending out the entire team."

"Can't do team-building with only one person," you say.

Selene fidgets like a kid with her hand stuck in a cookie and averts her gaze awkwardly.

"If you say so," she says.

"I'm quite excited for my real first battle," Orianne says. "I'm sure we'll all do quite well."

"So am I," Natsumi says. "Or is it so do I? Or both? Ugh…"

The hangover isn't doing much to improve her mastery of English.

"You can expect Maneating Hares, Crows and possibly a Werewolf or two," the Commander continues. "You will not be diverted to alert zones while this operation is ongoing, and you will have priority for evacuation. I expect each and every one of you to return alive."

"No problem there, ma'am," Francis says. "I can get them out of anything."

- "An enemy this weak won't be a problem."
- "I won't take any unnecessary risks."
- "We'll be counting on you, Francis."

"I've said it before," you say. "I won't take any unnecessary risks."

"I know," the Commander says. "And I expect you to keep repeating that to yourself from the moment you leave to the moment you return. Now, are there any questions before you depart?"

Everyone shakes their heads, and the Commander gives you a curt dismissal.

"All right," Francis says, "let's get this show started."

The squad follows Francis to his Vimana's landing pad on the roof. The girls all have decent poker faces, but you can tell Orianne and Natsumi are a little bit nervous about their first real mission. As for Selene…

"My divine arrow will find these foul creatures wherever they may be hidden. I will cut them all down, and all shall bask in the luminescence of my glory!"

She's still too into it.

You board the Vimana and Francis speeds off. By all rights, you should all be dead from the acceleration alone, but you barely even notice it. Relics are just bullshit that way.

The Vimana stops and descends a short distance from the area of operations.

"There's your stop, as quiet and stealthy as I can pull off in a golden glowing airship," Francis says. "I'll keep an ear out in case things go south. Good luck!"

"Thanks, Francis."

You disembark and the rest of the squad gathers around you, waiting for your orders. Even Selene with her arrogance is willing to follow your lead.

Someone needs to go first and lead the squad. Selene can't because her bow can't really handle surprise attacks, but the rest of you can.

"Orianne, take point." You're tempted to do this yourself, but it's best to have melee weapons at the front and back of the formation in case something goes wrong. "We'll be right behind you."

"It will be my pleasure." Orianne draws Joyeuse and steps forward, Natsumi takes the back. Selene and you stay in the middle of the pack.

The surrounding area was once a city. Now, it's a frozen wasteland. The buildings are preserved remarkably well in spite of the weather, but the thick layers of ice and snow - at least one foot at the thinnest point - gives it all an unsettling appearance. You advance, led by Orianne, until you reach the edge of the red zone which contains enemies.

The mission is to kill as many of the Wendigo's forces as you can, and you need to decide how you want to get started.

- [DC8] Use Selene's bow to spot the closest target.
- [DC13] Find a fortified position and attract the enemy to you.

"We'll find a fortified position and attract the enemy to us," you say. "We can just defend ourselves until we win, and Francis will be available if we need someone to picks us up."

"That sounds like a plan," Orianne says. "Given the state of the city, we should be able to find something."

You try going inside a building, but the doors are frozen shut, and the windows are so thick with frost that you can't even break them. You try climbing onto a house, but you can't get a good grip; not even Joyeuse and Ame-no-Ohabari can get a good bite. Selene's arrows can pierce the ice, but they snap immediately when you try to put your way on them.

You maintain a calm appearance, but you're inwardly pissed off at yourself. You're used to fighting Fomorians, but North America is a different battlefield. Your usual tactics won't work here.

"Wait." Natsumi holds up a hand to stop you. "I believe I heard something."

You close your eyes and focus on your hearing.

Cawing from the north. Thudding footsteps from the south.

"They're coming towards us," you say. "And we're stuck in the open."

Then a howl resounds across the city. That would be the Werewolf

"Rabbits first," you say. "Orianne, take the lead."

You pull back towards the south, away from the Crows.

The Maneating Hares are hard to make out at first because they're white on white, but they're easy to spot once they open their bright red eyes and move.

And they move very fast.

They're not as fast as the Crows, and they don't have the mobility of flight, but there's a carpet of them wide enough to fill a whole street and they are coming for you.

Orianne stands at the front, her sword drawn, while Selene nocks an arrow to her both. Natsumi stands behind you, katana held in hands, in case the Crows catch up to you.

As the group's control fighter, the first shot is yours.

"Gleipnir!"

Your Relic unwinds itself from your arm and unravels its threads to bind and snare the Maneating Hares, stalling their advance. They undead beasts struggle against the Relic's bindings, but Gleipnir holds true, albeit with someone obvious strain.

"So that's your Relic, Eamon," Orianne says. "I must say, it's more impressive in person than the official records make it sound."

"It does seem very useful to have," Natsumi agrees.

Selene merely snorts and prepares another arrow, not that you expected anything else from her.

In any case, the Maneating Hares are suppressed by Gleipnir and flow of battle is on your side.

- [DC12] Launch a coordinated assault with Orianne's help.
- [DC11] You can take these rabbits on with your bare hands.

"Orianne, you mentioned Joyeuse was useful for team attacks?"

The woman smiles and plants her sword in the ground. It generates a soft golden light which envelops your team.

Natsumi cuts down wide swaths of the Maneating Hares, while Selene's arrows take out entire columns at once. Aware of their movements, you reflexively pull Gleipnir's lines taut to help their attacks.

At the end of your assault, the white street is stained red. The Maneating Hares are still an active threat, but they're also obviously crippled. You just need to finish them off.

In the distance, you can hear the cawing of the Crows

"I'll finish them off," you say. "The rest of you, watch out for the Crows."

Selene turns her bow towards the cawing, while Natsumi withdraws.

You run towards the Maneating Hares and leap high into the air. At the apex of your flight, you pull your arm back. As you approach the ground, you slam your arm down and unleash a mighty shockwave that shatters the ice and finishes off the Maneating Hares.

You stand up and dust the snow off your uniform.

The Crows are quickly approaching your position. Since you dealt with the Maneating Hares so quickly, you have time to prepare an ambush for the Crows.

"Selene, prepare to snipe the Crows."

Predictably, Selene snorts and flicks her hair back. "Such a task is a simple matter for a divine goddess such as myself," she says. "Make way for my argent elegance."

You're quite certain that "divine goddess" is a redundant statement. You'll have to do something about this eventually if you're going to keep working with her.

Selene looses one arrow after another, only aiming in the general direction of the Crows. The cawing and cries of pain are the only indication you have that her arrows land true.

When the crows arrive, they are scattered and weakened by Selene's attacks.

- [DC13] Bind the Crows with Gleipnir, reducing their Speed to E.

You call upon Gleipnir once more. The Relic, still wet with the blood of the Maneating Hares reaches into the sky to form nets and bind the wings and talons of the Crows

The Crows struggle against their bindings, but while their strength remains unaffected, they have no where to go, and no where to run.

"I have to say, this is going better than I expected," Orianne says. "I expected something more life-threatening for our first battle."

You groan internally; you just know you're going to have to pay for that jinx later.

"This is only natural," Selene says. "Overwhelming victory is the only thing one should expect from my resplendent self."

"Focus, please," you chide them. "We're not done yet."

While the Crows are still bound by Gleipnir, now is the time to strike.

You pull on Gleipnir and drag the Crows down to ground level so Natsumi can have a better chance of hitting them.

"Natsumi, you're up," you tell her. "Don't be afraid of cutting through Gleipnir's threads or getting tangled up; I've done this sort of thing before."

Natsumi says something in Japanese that you can't understand. You stare at her with one eyebrow raised, and she realizes that she was speaking the wrong language. She blushes and starts again.

"As I meant to say, I will swiftly kill these abominations so they can no longer bring harm to us or the innocent."

"That's great," you say.

Natsumi swings her katana in wide arcs, and Gleipnir pulls back or follows the edge of her blade as needed to best tie the Crows down. With the beasts currently bound and helpless, there's nothing they can do to fight back. You only need one more attack to finish them off.

"Joyeuse is mostly a support weapon," she says, "but this does look fun."

Orianne raises her sword up and joins Natsumi's carnage. The two of them make short work of what little remains of the Crows. Selene, for her part, is forced to sit on the sidelines and watch; it wouldn't do if she accidentally hit one of the front line fighters with her arrows.

At the end of the battle, you're all tired, sweaty and covered in blood which, fortunately, does not belong to you. Overall, it's been a very good day for the squad.
