A loud crash echoes trough the room, as Commodore Ferlain hits the floor after your punch. He knocks over a vase, and goes down hitting the shelves on the other side. The soldiers, both of them wearing brand-new uniforms, and being freshly promoted under the Commodore's service, don't know how to react. Indeed, it must be unbelivable what has transpired before them.

You, an officer of the Cortian military, part of the Cult of Ra, hits a fellow member, a man outranking you in both organisation, just because he stabbed a filthy citizen of an occupied town.
The aforementioned man is laying in the corner, trying tho stop the bleeding from his wounds. The bayonet is on the ground among some blood puddles, fallen from the Comodore's hands where you hit him.

You could see how badly he is injured, command the soldiers to put down their weapons, or you can go one step ahead and tell them to arrest Ferlain, tough who knows how they'll react. You can also just kick him while he is down

The situation is tense. What do you do?

Kill him. If we're in an old timey military (especially if it's cult like!) we need to get rid of our dissenters and this fuck is going to be suspect number one.

Find an enemy bayonnet (whether that's the enemy gun or it has certain markings, etc) to stab him with, and when he bleeds out enough that he can't survive with the medical tech of the age.

Let all who oppose us feel our boots.

You stride over, Ferlain's hunched over figure, you rage controlled, but still boiling. He is still struggling to shake off the sudden attack. “You son of a bi..” - he starts supporting himself on the nearby wall.
You aren't even stopping your stride, while you draw out your sabre, and with a single decisive strike, run it trough his neck. He falls back like a ragdoll clutching the wound and choking on any further curses he might have had with him.

You hurry over to Simon. The two soldiers hurry over to their injured commanding officer, clueless and still awestruck by the situation.
- C..commander – he breaths heavily – I..I am sorry, they got me.
You gaze down upon the half sitting form of your aide. Two years ago, he was a loyal member of your troops. He served faithfully and fought bravely, and could be considered the embodiment of a patriot. You even remember the time he stood by you in the face of certain defeat. However, three years ago he came to you with the request of qutting. You remember going around for two weeks to get the necessary papers and permits for his complete freedom. No "emergency" recalling, no obligation to commit some of his descendants to a career in the government. You firmly believed he served plenty of his share, and now deserved to be free. He thanked you almost among tears, and you would have departed with a manly hug, if you didn't thought that would be far too improfessional.

Your contemplation are disturbed by the hacking of your former aide. His words are drown in blood for a few attempts, but then he finally manages to speak up.
- My wife! I can't see! Is she..? Is she..? - he leaves the question to hang in the air. He has seen what happened as well as you did, he's just still in shock.
You look over to the body of the woman on the ground nearby. Her face disfigured by Ferlain's shot from before.

When two months ago, a new campaign was started, and the Cortian Army invaded a few towns on the edge of the sovereign nation of Trinia, you've been assigned to be part of the assault under your colleague, Forlain. He have attained the rank of Commodore outranking you. He probably wanted finally be above you in command for once, and moved some strings so you've had to be part of the attack.

So you were there the day before, commanded a squad, shed the blood, the usual stuff. Cannons roared, cavalry charged, infantry marched. It was quite unnerving seeing the men do so much wild looting, and pillaging. Not to mention ineffective.
This didn't used to be so commonplace. True the soldiers have to get what's due, but you've always managed to do this in a more civilized, and -in your opinion- more effective manner. A manner that didn't cause civil unrest and open hostilities to later occupation forces.
To do what you can, you've insisted that you'll be part of the morning inspection with the Commodore, so you might minimize vandalism. You had no idea...
Now you have to tell your friend that his wife is dead.
- “She is gone, I am sorry. She didn't suffer” - you add

Simon's eyes fill with tears - “No, no, no” - he whispers on the verge of crying. Then in a sudden rush of mental prowess overcomes himself. He looks into your eyes, and you can see that he is slowly slipping from this world “My daughter. Commander, take care of my daughter. I beg of you.”
Suddenly sensing a presence from the side, you turn your head left, and see the child frozen in abject terror, watching behind the rails of the stairs.

You hear another voice speaking up. One of the soldiers standing up from the corpse of the dead Commodore. “Y-you stay here” - he stammers to his partner - “I-I go and tell command”
You know that the initial reaction of command will be to detain you. No one near has the authority, the rank, and the knowledge to give you a trial yet.
With the new war effort in motion, it might take quite a while till someone worthy can be sent.

“Not so fast” - you speak up in a commanding tone. The soldiers freeze up for a moment while you continue. “You stay here and clean up the bodies, take care of the survivors, and do the burial. The report of this incident is my responsibility.”

Both men visibly realxes when it seems like you don't intent to hurt them. You excuse to one of them to bring reinforcements to the cleanup. The four new arrival seems quite shocked over what they see, but they shut up as soon as they see who you are, ask no questions and get to work.
You try your best to save Simon, but he was beyond saving before you got to him, and long dead before the surgeon was fetched. The Commodore was a high-ranking member of your order, and as such, he was a very efficent killing machine.

You contemplate on what to do next.

You wave to the soldiers to grab the stretchers and follow you. The veiled bodies follow you down the streets, to the edge of the town. Meanwhile, like in a trance, the little girl follows the file wordlessly. A ghost of frail flesh, following the ghosts if white sheet.
You manage to find a spot on nearby hill where there are no corpses and the cannon craters are few.

Simon and Laura are buried there, beneath a single tree. The men dare not to ask you, or challenge you while digging. No one says a word. The aftermath of death, and silence always went hand in hand. The burial is ended with you marking the trunk of the tree with their names. After a minute of honorary silence, you turn about and start to march towards the command post. You gaze behind and see the newly orphaned standing before the makeshift grave.

One of the soldiers asks you; “Sir, what of the commander? Won't we bury him too?”
You know that as a member of the Cult of Ra, Forlain has to be ritually burned, and not buried.

"Hold on" – you say raising your hand to silence the man, and sign them to wait here.
You turn back and walk up to the tiny figure. She can't be more than ten. She doesn't even flinch when you crouch next to her.
"I know you are old enough to know what has happened. - you start solemnly - Your father was a great man, and I will miss him dearly, but not as much as you. I promise to take you under my wing. I will look after you and make sure you become the woman your father would have wanted you to be." You aren't a hundred percent sure what kind of woman would that be, or even what Laura would have wanted, but this is as comforting as you can get; make promises, and uphold them.
She looks at you, wiping away a tear in her eyes. You hold her your hand – gloves taken off, so you wouldn't get blood and dirt on her – and after a long moment she takes it. The two of you walk away silently.

You wave to the soldiers.
"Leave him in the woods. We will say we couldn't find the body."

You go to the men in charge. The two main officer of the two battalion left in charge of the city, and under the direct command of Commodore Forlain. There used to be four, but two of them had to be sent to the north. They turn to you when you call them. You know the truth.

You've insisted that you'll be part of the morning inspection with the Commodore, so you might minimize vandalism. You bitterly think about how you minimized it. At least you've retaliated with extreme prejeduce.

When Forlain decided to check a house “randomly” from the inside you've met your former friend again. After a some nerveous chatting, you've gathered that he asked to be discharged so he can settle down with the woman he loved; a local woman named Laura.
What you've had gathered too late, was that Forlain had some sort of connection with the woman going way back, and wanted her for himself. You do not know how far it goes. Maybe he appointed himself here so he could lead the attack, even worse, who knows.
What you know is, he shot her in the face when his blatant request was refused, and stabbed Simon when he objected. The rest went down brutally fast. You've sent Forlain into a shelf of old family china, dropping his sword. Then you've ran the pig over withot a second thought

"Gentleman" – you start – today morning, during inspection, and incident occurred, which have left Commodore Forlain and three civilians dead. The two officer looks at each other, in disbelief, then the shorter one quickly turns to you and nods.
"Please Captain, continue."
"It was routine inspection, when the Commodore decided to visit one of the houses from the inside. We have found a couple and asked them some routine questions."
"Why did the Commodore and you were doing this? What about the regular troops?" - interrupts the taller, lankier officer. Before you can answer, the other one speaks
"I remember that he insisted on it" -remarks the shorter – "Carry on please."
"The Commodore made an attempt on the woman, but that refused him. Whereupon the he proceeded to shoot her, and gut the disagreeing husband."
"And how did he die?"
"I have executed him"
"What?"
"I have executed him on the spot"
"Why?" - grunts the taller one in disbelief – "he was the commander of this whole operation! What are we supposed to tell headquarters?"
"What I've said to you: the truth"
No one says a word for a minute, you having said what you wanted, and the people in charge not knowing entirely what to say. Finally the other officer speaks up

"Not so fast" you hold out a hand "I'll comply, but I'd like to arrange a few things trough my adjutant."
The battalion commander doesn't answer at first, but then sighs.
"As far as I am concerned you are still an esteemed member of the Cortian Military, and a valid follower of Ra. As such you'll be held in proper respect."
You nod in thanks and your adjutant is called. He is a pudgy fat kid, fresh on the position his name is Biff, or Boff, or something like that. He salutes weakly before you.
"Adjutant Baffenhow, at your service sir!" he says. You take a few steps forward to speak with him without your guards hearing too much. You give him a few standard order regarding the detachment, and to double check the message regarding you and any reply that might come.
Lastly you confidentially point him to the girl, and tell him to look out for her while you are gone.

Afterwards you are led into one of the old bedroom upstairs of HQ, and not a cell. It seems the battalion commander kept his word. At least some still consider honor a virtue. You get comfortable , and wait. It takes four days until someone arrives to deal with the situation.

You learn the arrival of the representative in the middle of the night. Six soldiers come in, clad in red and steel. They hold you at gunpoint while lead you out from your room, confiscating your weapon, armor, overcoat, and hat. As they drag you down the stairs, you can see a fellow Cult member, getting into the face of the battalion officer. Threatening him with lash and other unsavory fates for not throwing you in the dungeons immediately.

Within a few minutes, you find yourself in a cold and dark room, with two chairs, and a table with a few candles on it. Sitting in very basic clothing, and chains, you wait for what seems like hours. After a while two man - one in uniform like yours, and the other in blue robes – enters the room.

The blue robed Teth Acolyte takes place near the door that closes behind them, while the other one approches the table.
You take a closer look upon the man in the Ra uniform while taking place in the chair in front. He is High General Martin Akov, and in your opinion one of the worst blood in the Cortian Military.

"Ah Kasim. I should have know you'll get yourself into trouble sooner or later." - he says with a joyless smile – "But that's a but too much" – he adds as his face switches to threatening.
He gives you a smack in your face.
"Just tell me; why?"
He doesn't let you answer, instead giving two more hits on your ribs. You can't do much with your hands bound behind your back.
"I've heard he was just trying to have some fun, and you've repulsively executed him like some insurrectionist."
With an uppercut, the chair leans over, and you fall on the ground.
"You and your mentor always were openly hostile with me and mine. Bitching about shame, and conduct. Bah." -he spits with disdain.

You finally manage to get some breath, and speak.
"Would you like to know why?" - you ask – "Because you are helminths"
"Excuse me?"

"MY WAY IS BETTER!" - he shouts- "The strong lives and the weak serves, however the strong sees it fit. My philosophy has been sanctioned as well, so you have no right to tell me I am wrong."

"Well then, if you are referencing to the permission of the patriarchs, then I am allowed to do the same. Me and my mentor's path is valid. I am willing to once again, stand before the elders, and protect my case."
"Well that's the thing Kaz:" – he crouches over your laying body - you already are."
You don't say a word, just stare at him wordlessly. He continues;
"You are looking at High-Patriarch Akov, the master of the Cult of Ra and I deem you guilty. Perhaps re-visioning and deleting your master's philosophy is a long procedure, but executing you for my acolyte's murder is not. Your fate is sealed."
He turns away and says one more thing.
"There is one thing that might make me more merciful towards you; where is his body?!

>B) Tell him, it's beyond salvaging now

"You said it yourself. My fate is sealed. His body will rot just like all the civilians he killed."
He is absolutely livid, flipping the table, and threatening you, to whip, skin, and crucify you.
You have no doubts he means every word, but he can rant all day and night if he wants. This final victory is yours, and he'll not have it. After a while he leaves you there and the clerk in blue follows him. The six guards come and take you to cell D-21, holding you at gunpoint again. They know that giving you any leeway is a death sentence for them, and they treat you according to that.

You spend three more days in the cell. The warden occasionally coming by with the regular food and water. You are spending most of the time in meditation. An practice you've been taught early, and have cultivated since then. It keeps the mind sharp, while controls pain, hunger, and thirst. On the morning of the fourth day, you open your eyes to well-known voices; the voices of battle.

Artillery, and gunshots. Screams, and the clang of steel. The voices are faint, but some of the other inmates have heard it, and are growing restless.

>A) Start to shout, and cause some ruckus
>B) Try to strike up a conversation with the guy in the other cell
>C) Look for a way out
>D) Wait and see what will transpire

About if he wants to be our accomplice in getting out of here.

Look, as fucktarded as Akov and his filth are, the boys under our command don't deserve to get killed over shit that was actively harming the national interest.

We need to get out of here, rejoin Baffenhow and our company, and see if we can rally support among the members of the Teth and Ra cults to our philosophy.

It's time for a religious war now.

You look around in your cell for the thousandth time since you've been brought in. A few square meter space, no window, and thick bars. You have to relinquish every item, so you have nothing to commit suicide with. The simple notion itself is insulting.

"Hey!" you shout over to the opposite cell. "Hey you!" The thin, and dirty man stirs on his sleeping cot. Finally sitting up after calling, enough times.
"Whaa?!" - grunts, shaking his head. Then his eyes clear up the moment he looks at you. "Ohh, you are that guy! Who killed some Cortian bigshot, no?"
"Well.."
"HEY! Shut it!" - the warden arrives. Ugly man with only a handful of teeth, and an unpleasant odor.
"What's going on?" - aks your new acquaintance
"None of yo dam business" comes the reply, with a swift clank on the celldoor.
This might be your chance.

>A) Get the warden's attention
>B) Wait for a chance
>C) Insult the warden
>D) Scream like bloody murder
>E) Write-in

You've waited three days, a little more won't hurt. The warden continues to pester the prisoner. He takes on an impertient pose, and keeps the keyring circling around his fingers.
"I am watching you Gouch. I stand between you and another victim, and as long as I breathe you'll nev.."
He cannot finish. A piece of ordenance crashes somewhere near, and everyone is shaken a bit off from their feet. The warden falils as he falls forward, catching himself in the rails.

Unfortunately for him, he drops the key which clanks on the ground a few times. His misfortunes don't end here, because the rails belong to Gouch's cell. The man grabbs the warden's arms, and gleefully pulls them in. Another loud clang is heard as his head hits the rails, long scream as Gouch bites into his ear.

You reach down, and with the tip of your fingers, grab hold of the key. After a few minutes, you manage to find the right one, and you are free.

You don't miss a minute, get to the main door, that was left slightly ajar by the warden. You scale the stairs, and look out into the open.

It seems the Trinians are making their counterattack

So what's with the Cults of Ra and Teth?
Is the differences in how national policy is shaped by the cults a difference between the cults themselves, or are the Assholes (which Akov leads) and the Pragmatists (which our master leads) a cross-cult factions?
>>
>>405479
Thank YOU for playing.

I think I should implement a lore document for the next thread.

Basically Cortia is governed by the political powers of the Cults. The elders or elder councils of each cult are the highest authority, and their council decides government affairs.

Each of the cults aim to some form of human perfection.
The Cult of Ra is aiming for martial perfection, warfare, fighting, and the such.
For obvious reasons, the cults decided that the military should be under their jurisdiction.

Therefore any philosophy trying to move forward the aforementioned things, can be considered valid (The elder(s) decide in the end)
Your master have believed that mercy, and human dignity have place with martial superiority, and someone shouldn't be squished just because you can do it.

However Akov and his kind went with the "might makes right" approach, and since they brought results, their way wasn't outlawed.

Your mentor have died among suspicious circumstances, leaving the amount of merciful cult members rather scarce.

The Cult of Teth are Historians, and clerks, upholding the massive bureaucracy involved with governing this growing empire
>>
>>405666
So the Cult of Teth is basically neutral in this Doctrinal Conflict?
Do they lean one way or the other? Can we find any support among them?

And what are the other cults?
>>
>>405734
>And what are the other cults?
*cough* Ihaventdec.. *cough*
I mean we still have the Cult of Kahn, the caretakers.
While Teth Acolytes are more interested in what can be recorded, Kahn Acolytes are more interested in what they can apply. They can be usually found in the engineering detachments, and around big machines.

There is also a rumored fourth cult, but our hero doesn't know much about them.
