The world was once ours and we shared it equally. The forest was our domain and it stretched between all four corners of the world. We lived in peace and upheld the balance. There was death, but no suffering. It was all part of the circle of life. However, all that changed when the creatures with the Red Flower came to this world. Humans, the Guardians called them. They came in the night and burned down our forests, killed our guardians, raped and pillaged our lands. There was no end to their crusade against us and no reason behind their cruelty.

We, the creatures of the forest, were brought close to extinction before our salvation came: The World Tree, the center and the roots of our Forest that once spanned the world, called us all back to it. Within its borders the last Guardian, the Great Horned Owl Kafuu, placed three barrier spells that would keep the Red Flower out and whoever wielded it. Before he fell into a deep slumber from which there would be no awakening, he placed the new role of Guardianship upon the red-eyed Awoo Race. They would guard this new forest realm behind walls of magic until the end of time.

After three centuries of peace, the first of the three barriers were broken and we received a grim reminder that the Humans will not stop until all Creatures of the Forest lie dead.

You are Lin, a 17 year old Awoo girl and despite the hardships and failures you’ve endured so far, your dream is still to become the Strongest Guardian and assuming the mantle of the Hero that will save the Forest Realm and all those who live beneath the World Tree!

[STATS]
>Combat: [+++]
>Social: [+]
>Knowledge: [++]

[Traits/Perks]
>[Childish Energy]: You have an unusual amount of stamina and don't get tired easily from physical activities.
>[You Control It]: In a moment of great fear, you persevered without your Guardian Blade. Your mind can now endure more. +1 on the dice for Sanity Checks.
>[Inner Wolf]: The Ancestral White Wolf within you has awakened and you’ve gained a portion of the speed it was known for. +1 on the dice when performing a Reflex/Agility Save.

[Abilities]
>[Berserker Mode]: You may trigger this state to activate your rapid regeneration ability given to you by your inner wolf, but the longer you stay in it, the steeper the price becomes for using it. It lasts until all external and internal wounds have been healed and after it’s been used, it takes at least an hour before you may use it again. [The Price]: Every time you use this ability, your resistance to the Red Flower within you grows weaker, allowing it to eventually assume control of you.

Last Time on Hero Guardian Quest:
Lin took a stroll through the village, spoke with Heim and confirmed that he’s leaving Team 2, putting the final nail in the coffin for your team.

After that, you made sure to resupply and made your way over to the training area where you encounter Chao and entered a ring with him to duel. In the midst of the duel a strange, pale Awoo entered the fight, introducing herself as Yu. It turns out she has a rare power that only Guardians of Old used to possess: Balance Ability. Lin and Chao decided to go ask Chen’dao with Yu about these Balance Abilities. The officer offered what little he knew of it and claimed these abilities are near extinct, with Yu being the first case in 250 years.

After talking with Chen’dao and sitting down to eat, Chao left the table, but Lin was determined to finally find out what Chao was up to in the forest. She and Yu uncovered the truth and it triggered a fight between the three that ended with Lin’s victory after Yu maimed her and she used her Berserker Mode and lost control to something fierce within her.

With Chao down and Yu unconscious from Lin’s unrestrained fury, the former Captain fell unconscious as well.

Through the illuminated shadows, you limp down the dirt road past alongside the burning houses, the withering flowers, and the broken bodies of men and Awoo alike. The Red Flower lights up the area around you, but from within its flames you hear nothing but screams dreaming for a release. For death to soften their torn hearts. Your left foot meet the hard embrace of wood beneath you as your footless right leg is limping behind, leaving a trail of blood. Both arms are broken, yet you feel no pain. They hang uselessly at your sides.

In the distance you hear the soft cry that echoes above the countless screams around you. It’s a little girl, shouting for her mommy and for someone to help her. Bounding around the corner of a burning tower, you spot a shadow at the end of the dirt road, upon a rocky ledge, holding the little human girl by her throat over the cliff. The shadow looks back at you, its crimson eyes tearing up as the red mist pours through its body, consuming the shadow that resembled a man before it drops the little girl off the ledge.

Sedgewick! You hear someone scream next to you!

_

You wake up with voiceless scream, cold sweat covering your body. The room you’re in is wooden, traditional, and the bed you lie in is of soft leaves. To your side, you spot Chao sitting on his knees by your bedside, sleeping in a rough position. At the end of your bed, leaning on a stump, is your Guardian Blade. No one else is in the room.

>Get your Guardian Blade.
>Leave the room.

Your eyes scan past Chao, landing atop the grip of your Guardian Blade. The urge to speak with Shén Kū and leaving this room far exceeds the one you have to speak with Chao and find out what happened after everything went black once you successfully activated your Berserker Mode. It’s possible that Shén Kū still knows and he wouldn’t have any reason to lie to you. As carefully as you possibly can, you get out of the bed, grab your Guardian Blade along with your now dry and freshly cleaned clothes and armored equipment before you leave the room quietly.

After making sure no one else is inside the room across from yours, you enter it and get dressed before addressing the Giant in the room.

“Shén Kū? Are you there?” You call out to the Red Flower within the steel of your Guardian Blade that you choose to name. It doesn’t respond at first, making you itch with a strange nervosity tingling in your finger tops before it finally gives voice to its almost formless existence.

”We never left, Lin.”

“Good.” You sigh in relief. Over time, you’ve come to regard Shén Kū more and more as one of the few allies that would stand by your side even in the most darkest of times, even if its life is tied to yours. It’s a pleasant thought that won’t betray your suspicious nature of any form of Red Flower. The words of Sensei still echo inside of you to this day - ”Fear the Red Flower, but never cave to its promises nor to its corrupting touch. Knowing this and accepting it, is the first step to becoming a true Guardian.”

”We sense distress within you and your heart rate is elevated.” Shén Kū asks what’s with you in his own way. You take a moment to breathe and calm down from the… nightmare? From that horrible dream that you only remember pieces of now.

“How long was I out?” You ask, throwing a glance at the open hole on the opposite side of the exit. From the looks of it, the sun has just passed the first light. “A few hours?”

”You’ve been asleep for a day and two nights.”

“What?!” With your Guardian Blade in hand, you storm off towards the hole and throw your head out. You’re in one of the rooms of the Guardian Quarters, up on the hill and as you look over the village it’s seemingly abandoned of all life. Not a single Guardian or villager in sight.

Fuck, fuck, fuck!

>Ask Shén Kū if he knows what’s happening.

Pulling yourself back in, your hand clench harder around the grip of your blade. They can’t have left without you and Chao, right? You’re supposed to be the weapon for the Blood Guardians! Is this because Team 2 broke up? Did Rushi discard you? Have you been ‘used up’?

No. Not a chance!

You’re about to leave the room to ask Chao or get out of the Quarters at once to see what’s happening, but the voice of Shén Kū stops you.

”They haven’t left yet. Last we heard from the unknown voices outside our bedroom, your leader has arrived and have started to mobilize the host in preparation for the assault.”

“So he sent Chao to fetch me?” You remark suggestively, your other hand forming a fist in anger upon remembering the fight in the forest.

”No. The Awoo has been at your side ever since you were brought to the room as far as we know. He hasn’t left once.” Shén Kū reveals the truth of Chao’s presence in your room. You lower your gaze to the floor in response. He’s your rival, but he’s treating you like a fragile, dear friend. One second he’s itching for a fight and ready to cut you down, and in the next he spends days and nights by your bedside, awaiting your awakening.

What’s his deal anyway!?

“So the companies of Blood Guardians are still here?” You stop your pouting and shake off your previous thoughts, returning to the more important issue at hand.

”Last we heard, yes. They are mobilizing at the outskirt of the village under your Leader’s call, facing the barrier to the western front.” And with that, you leave the room behind in a hurry. However, you stop promptly in mid-march in the corridor, throwing a glance back at your room. You can hear Chao’s snoring from within.

>Wake him up

A groan followed by a sigh escapes you when you double back into the room you awoke in. Chao is sleeping soundly by your bedside, his arms now outstretched across the bed. You put your Guardian Blade where it belongs on your back before you approach him with determined steps. With a firm, hard slap he awakens in shock and slight pain. He finds his balance upon his feet in seconds, throwing his gaze and head about the room in panic. After stepping away from you, he finally realized who’s in front of him.

“Ah.” He gives way to a shit-eating grin while caressing the cheek you slapped, “Good morning to you too, Capt’n.”

“Cut the shit.” You order him promptly, void of any kind of emotion, even your silent rage.

“You’re still angry.” He remarks offhandedly while following you close nearby as the two of you march down the corridor, heading for the exit of the Guardian Quarters. You give no notion to speak with him any further and surprisingly enough, he shuts his trap for once. The rest of the journey out and down the hill becomes a fleeting memory of silence between the two rivals. You eventually reach past the village, heading in the direction of the Western Front lying in the distance, past the barrier you now know to be a Balance Ability unique to Kafuu.

____

“You both finally decided to show your faces.” The older Awoo proclaims softly, his eyes wandering from Chao to you, “Good.” Rushi gives way to a determined smile, gazing over at the barrier in the horizon, past the hillside. As you look about you can’t count the number of Guardians present like you could back at the Northern assault. This time the numbers are surely around 250 Guardians, if not more. A part of the Western Front has been in Human Control for a longer period than they had what little piece of land in the North, but it’s still nothing compared to the Eastern Front or the yet uncontested South that Humanity has in an iron grip.

“What will be ou-” You start off, but you’re promptly cut off by Rushi.

“Before we get into the details of your part in this Assault, Raubtier, someone has a few words to say.” He looks back and motions for the girl finally revealing herself from where she stood behind their Leader.

Yu.

You’re still unsure how to feel about her, but if anything comes to mind it’s a mix of controlled anger and an air of caution. She ignores Chao and stares right at you with her unwavering red eyes.

“I’m sorry, Raubtier.” She bows deeply to you. Her tone sounds apologetic, but you’re not sure you trust them.

>Punch her and don’t forgive her.

Your fist comes flying before Yu can react or switch. It connects with her face, sending her to the ground with a violent thud. Instead of embracing your anger further, you restrain yourself after landing one hit. She remains on the ground, enduring the physical pain she’s still not used to. Your eyes meet as you tower above her, Rushi off to the side and Chao behind you, neither making any attempt to stop you.

“You cut off my hand, Yu. Doesn’t matter if I can regenerate it or not. That was beyond wrong. You do not bare your blade to a fellow Guardian. So no, right now I won’t forgive you. I don’t have it in me.” You spit at her apology, moving back when Rushi steps in to help Yu up on her feet again. With her back to you, she dusts herself off from the leaves and the dirt stuck to her clothes and Blood Guardian armor. Even after the pain from her face subsides, she still whimpers from a different source.

“Her wounds re-opened.” Chao reports, nodding at Yu. Your leader motions for her to go see an Alchemist off to the side to get the wounds restitched. On her way over, you notice that upon throwing off her chestpiece, there are long lines of crimson across the back of her white tunic. She’s been whipped hard enough to tear her flesh apart across her back. Scars that will never fade and will forever mark her body as a memory of her transgression against another Guardian. The only reason she hasn’t faced worst charges must be thanks to your Berserker Mode and her own unique and valuable Balance Ability.

“What did you do…?” You turn to Rushi, disgusted by his methods of punishment. Sure, you shouldn’t speak after punching her, but at least you didn’t scar her or cut her flesh. What she did was wrong, but she can’t regenerate like you. Rushi, on the other hand, doesn’t show any concern with Yu’s pain nor with your disgust.

“A hard decision had to be made. I chose the lesser of two evils. It comes with being a Blood Guardian, Raubtier. Something you’ll have to learn, and soon.” He waves the issue away, continuing where you left off while pulling out a scroll of the mapped out area where the Humans have built their village. You recognize it somewhat. “The scouts have gone ahead and returned before you awoke, so I’ve already established a plan of approach. You’ll fit in at any point, so I will let you choose where you think you, Chao, and Yu will--”

“Excuse me?!”

“You’re excused.” Rushi calmly continues while Chao throws you a frustrated glare, telling you to shut up and listen, “I will leave the decision of positioning during the assault up to your own judgement.”

Without pushing the issue any further with Rushi, you quietly let your eyes wander across the scroll in his hands. There’s three ways to put yourself into the assault:

The Vanguard; the group assigned at the very front who will act as shock Guardians that will push through the Human front as quickly and violently as possible. It’s the most lethal position, so it’s often only filled with brave volunteers or really bloodthirsty motherfuckers, like Chao. The second approach is through the breach group; several five-man teams designed to go from house to house and tower to tower, eliminating all threats to secure the road up the Hill paved by the shock Guardians. The Third and last group are the Assassins. Rushi has found a way to climb the mountain side of the tallest hill to reach the top before the Vanguard and the main forces. Their task is to eliminate any high priority targets stuck at the top while their main forces are down defending against the waves of Awoo Guardians.

Question is, where would the three of you fit in the most?

>The Breach.

Your finger press down at the second marking upon the scroll. It’s not the Vanguard where Chao’s ferocity, your toughness, and Yu’s speed would have made a difference. It’s not with the Assassins where Chao’s bloodthirsty nature might have been a problem, but where Yu and you would have shined. It’s the Breach. Yu can easily and quickly traverse the path between houses and towers, making quick work of anyone in her path. It allows Chao to still embrace his bloodthirst, even if it’s no Vanguard, and you’re allowed to do your duty and possibly save lives from certain ambushes erupting after the passing Vanguard. It’s not as glorified as the other two groups, but it’s an important duty nonetheless.

“The Breach.” You sound your decision with no hesitation and Rushi eyes you with a semi-surprised look. Maybe he expected you to put yourself in a more ‘forward’ position?

“Is that so? Very well.” He nods firmly, both to you and himself, and pulls the scroll back together and hands it over to an officer nearby who scurries off with it.

Chao, to no one’s surprise, is less than pleased at your decision. However, while Rushi is still about, he’ll sulk in silence, but you’re certain to hear his whining once the Leader leaves. Yu might not have anything to say. She’ll fall in line just to get your inevitable forgiveness, but for now she’s more useful to you as a subordinate than a friend or trusted team member.

“Anything else to report, Captain Raubtier? I won’t have time to talk after this. We’re still mobilizing and getting everyone ready and informed of their positions.” You make eye contact with Rushi again when he looks back at you after handing over the scroll.

Well, do you?

>Question.

“I have nothing else to report, but I discovered something while you were away…” You throw a glance over at Chao, who freezes at the spot. However, you’ve already settled on letting him decide when to tell everyone else about it, “Yu’s balance ability. I asked Chen about it, but he only gave us some basic background. He told us to ask you for anything else.” Rushi grows quiet in the face of your question. He stares through you with a sharp gaze and a neutral facial expression, revealing absolutely nothing to you. A face usually betrays someone’s feelings or thoughts, but this is not the case for your Leader. In the end he sighs, crossing his arms in slight impatience.

“Alright, what do you want to know?”

“How do I mix my Yin and Yang?” You start what could hopefully be an informative exchange. However, your leader has other plans though.

“That question will take too long time to explain, Captain. Time that I don’t have. Stick to what you know.” He shoots you down and turns to leave. You’re about to continue pressing the issue, but he cuts you off, “Dismissed!”

“I guess he’s too busy to deal with your shit right now…” Chao remarks, watching Rushi leave the scene next to you. He’s obviously still ticked off about joining the Breach group on your command. New 3-man team, same Captain, same leash and the same pain in the ass who holds it. The question is, what do you do before the assault begins? You’ll probably only have time to do two things, if even that.

>Deal with Chao.

If there’s one thing that’s certain it’s that having a Chao who might regress to resisting orders on the battlefield is not something you’d willingly put up with. You hold your rival to a certain standard - you expect him to at least stay focused and force himself to be motivated in a fight - but if he’s pissed off at you, there’s no telling if he’s going to treat you as the Captain of this new 3-man team or not. You could see him ignoring you out of spite, despite everything else. Given this prediction, you decide to pull him off to the side, away from the prying ears of other Guardian groups walking about while the mobilization is moving at its own pace.

“What is it now?” He groans irritably, gazing behind you at the Guardians glancing your way. This is the first time all the Blood Guardians in the Kenshin Company and a piece of the Ichigo Company is gathered in one spot and some of them has yet to see the infamous Raubtier. You ignore them, focusing on Chao now more than anyone else.

“I know you got pissed off because I put us with the Breachers.” You reveal what the issue is about with a hushed and careful tone.

“By the Tree, Capt’n, of course I get pissy about it!” He starts off, but lowers his voice when it draws even more unwanted attention, “That’s the place for bottom feeders. We belong in the Vanguard, and if not there, then at least with the Assassins. I could have kept my trap shut in stealth if it meant not being around those cowards who can’t climb a mountain or refuse to be in the front.” He spits at your decision, building up for a heated argument. Something you’d rather avoid.

“I get that, I do, but I need you to--”

“To what? Keep my mouth shut, smile, and do as you say? I was ready to do that, if you would have only asked me where we should go in the assault.”

“No, I need you to grow the fuck up.” You growl at him, catching him off guard, “Sure, the Breach ain’t as glorified of a duty as the Vanguard or the Assassins, but we’ll be able to save more lives there than anywhere else. If killing Humans is more important to you than saving fellow Guardians…” You trail off and the two of you stare at each other in a tensed silence with piercing eyes, fighting for control, “...then I want you out of my sight.” You spit back, putting down your foot in the face of an unruly team member. Your eyes remain locked until Chao’s gaze falls from grace.

“Fine. I get it. I’ll stop bitching about it. I’m still not okay with it, but you’ve... got a point, I guess, and I’m not in the mood to have a shouting match with you before the assault anyway.” Chao accepts defeat, for now. The two of you part ways, promising to meet up when Rushi calls for the host to move out. Before then, you still have just enough time to do one last thing judging on how far the mobilization has progressed while you were off talking some sense into Chao.

>Talk with Shén Kū.

With the issue Chao had with your decision dealt with for now, you’re uncertain what to spend the remaining time on. Although you consider checking in on Yu for a moment, another matter present itself as more pressing when you think about it. You still need to know how the fight ended between you and Yu, and more than that, maybe Shén Kū also got some insight on how to mix one’s Yin and Yang after seeing the process happening in front of its metaphorical eyes. With the decision made, you find some shade under an aerial root springing out from the ground near one of the Tree-Complex buildings. With two swift motions, you’ve buried your Guardian Blade halfway into the ground and taken a seat in front of it, both hands clasping at the cold steel that emanates its powerful will through your leather gloves.

”More questions?” Shén Kū’s voice echoes within your mind upon touching the blade.

“Already getting tired of them?” You smile in return to its question. Its voice is still pretty devoid of emotions, but you’ve grown used to it between Shén Kū and the Masked Humans you’ve encountered so far. Still, it feels like your Red Flower speaks with more familiarity than the voices leaving the Humans wielding those mocking masks resembling an Awoo.

”No.” It replies, short and factual as always, ”Ask and receive answers.” You’re unsure where to start, but the questions eventually come to you naturally.

“The thing is, I don’t remember how the fight ended with Yu. Everything just becomes a blurry mess when I try to remember anything past losing my hand. Can you tell me what happened, Shén Kū?” Hopefully It can shed some light on the mystery clouding your mind.

”We can. You used your regenerative ability to restore your hand, but as you did so, the other awakened force within you wrestled control from your mind. It is as we predicted; using your gift to restore parts of you means giving yourself over to the formerly dormant force, piece by piece. When, or if, it takes over completely your resistance to us will be gone.”

It took… control of me? - You narrows your eyes at the horrible thought, hands still clasping around the Guardian Blade dug into the dry grass. You had considered the Ancestral Awakened White Wolf within you to be a gift more than a curse up until now, but maybe you’ve been mistaken? If it’s willing to forcefully take control over you, doesn’t that make it your enemy?

"What about mixing my Yin and Yang?” You change the subject for now, certain that you’ll return to the topic of what to do with your other ‘problem’ that has evidently claimed a place of its own within you, “You said you felt what was happening inside of Chao when he was performing his Balance Ability?”

”We did...”

“And? Can you teach me how to do it?” You sound more excited than you mean to, but this is something you’ve come to truly invest yourself into.

”No.” It replies without any explanation, to which you demand one promptly thereafter, ”These forces you Awoo claim to be ‘Yin and Yang’ are foreign to us. No, more than foreign, it is something we cannot grasp. Something that we naturally reject. To you, it’s more than anything else, but to us, it is nothing. We do not consider it nothing, but it stands but nothing in our eyes.”

“What do you mean?”

”If these forces were to claim a physical form, you would be able to see it. We would not. We would feel it, on the most basic of levels or less, but nothing more than so.” Shén Kū’s answer leaves you silent, deep in thought. It seems it cannot help you in this, but how will you otherwise discover how to mix your Yin and Yang?

Then it hits you.

“Shén Kū.” And the Red Flower within the Blade responds to you silently with a slight stir, “I want to speak with this other force inside of me. I wanna speak with The White Wolf.”

”Impossible. It only emerges to the surface upon your usage of the regenerative ability. And when it does so, it will attempt to lay further claim to your mind.”

Hmph!

Got bored, so calculated the probability distribution of this system

formula of Cdf (Cumulative distribution function) for probability of X > x (X being the obtained number and x being the target)

sum (3 choose k)((11-x)/10)^k * (1-(11-x)/10))^(3-k), k=2 to 3

Plug in x
single roll decimal (percentiles) | triple roll decimal (percentiles)
X > 1: 1 (100%)
X > 2: 243/250 (97.2%) | (99.9978%)
X > 3: 112/125 (98.6%) | (99.89%)
X > 4: 98/125 (78.4%) | (98.99%)
X > 5: 81/125 (64.8%) | (95.64%)
X > 6: 1/2 (50%) | 7/8 (87.5%)
X > 7: 44/125 (35.2%) | (72.79%)
X > 8: 27/125 (21.6%) | (51.81%)
X > 9: 13/125 (10.4%) | (28.06%)
X > 10: 7/250 (2.8%) | (8.16%)

I feel like I did something wrong though... But that's the math yo.

>The uncertain, but safe method.

Amidst considering using your Berserker Mode, you’re reminded of the lesson Sensei gave you back when you were 14, alongside Chao, Ming, Heim, and the others. He taught you that meditation is in its own right one of the foremost methods to find yourself, think, and center yourself to face impenetrable obstacles you might otherwise shy away from. It is a way to find and accept energy separately from your inner Yin and Yang to grow a stronger mental fortitude or enter a state to heal your wounds faster. It’s not as fast as your Berserker mode or any potions, but it is a respected traditional method nonetheless.

Your hands leave the Guardian Blade buried in the ground and your communication with Shén Kū is cut off as you press the middle back of your fingers against each other, with your thumbs tucked away inside your palms. Your eyes close and you begin with the controlled breathing.

Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out.

You feel yourself, slowly but surely, falling into a trance of tranquility. The fingers around your mind remain firmly attached, but your inner eyes are searching the rest of your body, looking inwards to find this other force known as the White Wolf. If it refuses to surface without you putting yourself at risk, you’ll force it up with your willpower!

You will show yourself!

____

You’re uncertain how much time has passed when you eventually hear the call for the host of Guardians to move out. The fingers you protected your mind with was never touched nor was your mind. Your inner eyes didn’t find the source of the White Wolf and upon asking Shén Kū, it couldn’t tell either. It only feels its presence as if it’s there, waiting for its moment to rise. It cannot know where it’s residing specifically for now. With a sigh and a groan, you rise from the ground and dust off the leaves and other dirt from your clothes and armor. With your Guardian Blade at your back, you move out to join up with Chao and possibly also Yu in the march west.

With every step, you move ever closer to the beginning of a bloody Assault upon the second main Human settlement inside the Lost Forest Realm.

It looks a lot more complicated than it really is. I'm basically just saying this:
for say X greater than 5, probability of single die greater than or equal to 5 is 6/10, probability die is less than 5 is 4/10.

so I add the chance of two being greater than 5 and one die being less (and that's a combination, as either of the two dice could be greater) PLUS all three being greater than 5

((choose 2 of 3)(6/10)^2 * (4/10)) + (6/10)^3

Also tg dice have a way of not giving a shit about probability... so there's that too.
>>
>>455627
This would've been nice to know about. Means my greater than 3 is wrong, I put 98.6 instead of 89.6. Though for all purposes, the calculations for the 3 attempts are probably correct then. (1 - (1- chance)^3)

>Experience the Journey.

On your way to rendezvous with Chao, you make sure to find Rushi among the crowds of Guardians trekking in the same direction. You’d prefer to give him a piece of paper, but you don’t have anything of the sort at your disposal nor anything to write with, excluding your own blood which is just weird unless it’s a death or life situation. Instead you settle for giving him a short and hushed report by word to ear on what you’ve uncovered so far about your Inner Wolf. He takes the information in stride, ordering you to get your team together, but you’re certain that he’ll remember and it’ll be a topic of discussion at a later date.

Upon reaching the rendezvous point where you’re expecting to meet up with Chao, you spot Yu behind the male Awoo. She’s about to wave at you cheerfully, but refrains from it, but she can’t hold her bubbling smile back at the sight of your approach. Chao looks about as collected as one could be. No doubt saving his emotions and bloodthirst for the assault.

“I take it you’re ready?” You ask aloud firmly and decisively, to which Chao nods slowly and Yu follows his example, but with an energetic touch. “Then move out on me!” And with that, the 3-man team consisting of the infamous Captain Raubtier, the Balance Ability prodigy Yu, and Chao, the top Guardian of his class during the Trials is finally formed officially.

____

With you in the front, Chao following in your footsteps, and Yu at the back, the three of you follow the stream of Guardians heading through the Western Front that’s now completely empty of all Human activity. They probably know that you’re coming, but you haven’t given them enough time to flee properly, but you’re certain that they at least have a plan to get the civilians out and away from the bloodshed. That is, unless they intend to keep them all up at the top, which would be a poor decision given what’s heading up there upon your arrival.

You step over a small root rising from the ground, and throw a look back at Yu in the process. She’s trying her hardest to not stare you in the back, at both you and your Guardian Blade. You feel a twinge in your heart and you can’t help but give voice to your concern.

“Are you alright, Yu?” You shoot the question back at her and she looks up at you, surprised that you took the first step to speak with her this time around.

“I’m a-alright. I’ve walked a long way before. I won’t slow you down, captain.” She replies empty, avoiding your gaze.

“No, I meant does it hurt? Your back?” Her eyes lock with yours and a creepy, yet genuine smile forms across her lips and she nods enthusiastically in a giggle.

“Mhm!”

You throw your gaze forward again, musing on the mental picture of Yu’s eyes glowing with happiness. She’s probably overwhelmed that you’d still care for her, despite what she did. In more ways than one, she reminds you of a kid. A little sister, if you may. Although, a very semi-psychotic little sister with an unhealthy obsession of both you and Shén Kū. Something you’ll rectify with time and effort.

____

With the waterfall behind you and the tunnels ahead, you’re reminded of things you’d rather leave unspoken. Your failure will forever serve as a reminder, just like Yu’s scars will remind her. You’d imagine this place brings more bad memories to Chao than to you, but upon looking back at him, he appears quite untouched by the surroundings. He throws you a questioning look, and you shake your head at him as if to say ‘Nothing’.

“Yu.” You call out to her, and she gives way to a characteristic ‘yes?!’ with her hyper energetic voice, “Want to explain why you did what you did back in the forest?” You inquire, not feeling like ordering her to give you answers. You’ll know why eventually. She grows quiet for a while.

“I’ll, um, tell you after the fight, alright?” She mutters just loud enough for you to catch it. In this regard, she seems far more reserved than before. Her reasons must be private enough to not want to share it so publicly while you navigate through a narrow tunnel growing wider alongside other Guardians. You can see that.

Scouts have already been through these tunnels safely several times over, but you still don’t feel like being careless with your steps.

____

Upon finally spotting the end of the tunnel a bit of a distance away, you realize that there won’t be much time for talking peacefully once you leave this cavern. Is there anything else you’d like to say or do before leaving the cave tunnels?

His body crashes loudly into the thick tree trunk, a painful scream escaping him upon the violent impact. However, despite the pain ravaging through his body and core, he still rises from the patch of dirt and roots amidst the sea of grass. He struggles to take the first few steps, but soon enough he’s walking in a straight line again, shifting into a jog and then exploding into a sprint, leaping into the air once more, his body and arms ready to swing alongside his staff. Yet again the attack backfires, erupting into the leaping man and repels him into the ground several times before he once more finds himself with his back against his tree and his bum on the ground.

“Why do you persist in this when you know that you cannot do it?” The voice of the frog in traditional robes sitting nearby reaches the man when he tries to rise, his legs shaking in strain and painful refusal. “You are not ready, Ryoutarou.” He once more tries to shove the truth at his stubborn pupil who continues to ignore his advice. Ryoutarou exhales air at his master, as if it to mock him before he goes in for another sprint, but before he can leap or get very far, his legs give in and he lands face first in the wet grass. He doesn’t get up.

The frog, sitting upon his stone whilst drinking a steaming hot cup of tea, sighs as he close his eyes. He has yet to discover what Ryoutarou needs to become the Guardian he once was. His physical wounds have healed after he was brought to this Spirit Realm by Kafuu three centuries ago, but the wound in his heart and soul has yet to mend. He fears that if Ryoutarou cannot heal, he’ll remain stuck in this realm until the end of time. Not that he could die of old age, but he’d sooner or later succumb to the same state of insanity he was in when the frog found this realm at the advice of a fellow kin. This old master is certain that he couldn’t bring the Guardian of Old before him back from the brink of insanity again.

“Won’t you sit down and share a cup of tea with me, Ryoutarou?” He calls out to his pupil who’s finally up on his feet again after taking a breather on the ground. The Guardian throws him a glance and shakes his head with firm determination in his empty eyes before stretching his legs and arms, readying himself for another couple of tries that will ultimately fail. Ryoutarou knows that he’ll continue to fail, but there’s nothing else for him to do but keep on trying, waiting and hoping for a miracle.

So stubborn. The frog gives his pupil a sad smile when the Guardian is sent through the air, crashing into the grass again until his body meets the tree.

____

With every failed attempt, Ryoutarou’s determination grows stronger, but what is he determined to do? Forget or Accept his past?

You look back at your other two team members whilst following the stream of Guardians heading for the cave exit. You stop abruptly, forcing both Chao and Yu to wait in your wake while the stream of Guardians split around you. Some of them glance over at you while others are too busy getting themselves ready to take any notice of you.

“Remember; don’t do anything stupid. Prioritize Guardian lives over killing Humans. Keep your eyes open, heads cool, and watch each other’s backs and we’ll all get out of this alive. Understood?” You raise your voice above the clattering of armor and weapons and the constant, echoing sound of marching footsteps all around you. Chao nods again at you, silent and collected.

“Got it, captain!” Yu replies with a grin. You return a smile and nod to them before leading them out of the cave tunnels. Upon exiting the humid stone passage and the small forest in-between, you’re met with a short, but wide green field. At the center of it there stands seven hills of varying sizes and heights upon which Humans have built their settlements and the walls protecting them. There’s holes dug into the ground alongside the first hill - surrounding it - that serves as an entrance path to the rest of the settlement. Even from here, you can clearly see that the bridge over these holes have been destroyed. They intend to slow you down, since they know they can’t stop you from gaining access eventually. However, what resonates with you the most is that you know you’ve seen this sight before - back in the North, when you passed the barrier. The vision of this very same hill filled with Human settlements came to mind that day.

The Humans haven’t bothered to put any of their forces or any defenses out in the open field, so moving everyone into position will be easy. While the host is preparing itself to launch the assault, the Assassins have already split themselves from the main group. They did so before the patch of forest ended at the field. The Vanguard has placed themselves in the front, eager to launch themselves head first into the assault. The various groups in the Breach finds themselves behind the vanguard while the main forces and the other groups intermix with your side and behind them.

“Is it gonna rain?” You hear an Ichigo Guardian call out, holding his palm in front of him, “Yep, it’s gonna rain.”

“Ugh.” A Kenshin guardian groans.

“That be some fierce good news, lad!” You hear a familiar voice resounding behind you. Throwing a look back reveals an armored and armed Chen’dao with his trademark wide grin upon his face, “The weather be standing with ya’, guardian! It be giving us rain against the Red Flower!” He laughs heartily, slapping the Kenshin Guardian in the back. Others around him laugh as well. It warms your heart to know someone is at least trying to lift this heavy mood running through the host.

With the entire army gathered upon the field and in position, Rushi gives the call for the Vanguard to move in. As you watch them rush off towards the many towering hills straight ahead, you feel someone nudging you in the side. Chao.

“Wanna bet who can kill the most humans? The loser has to do what the winner says.” He smirks at you with a killer glint in his eyes.

“Do you have the memory of a fish?” Your voice has an irritated tone to it and your eyes narrow at Chao, your childhood friend and rival, “I’ve told you twice already now; that’s not what we’re here to do. Stay alive and prevent as many casualties as you can on our side. Focus on that and get your shit together.” You lecture him with a finger pointed at him and he rolls his eyes at you, grunting a low ‘understood’ before throwing his gaze elsewhere. You look over at Yu and she locks eyes with you before looking over at the hills in the distance, shrugging lightly. Despite her obsession with you and Shén Kū, she surprisingly enough draws the line at getting involved in the rivalry between you and Chao.

Shoulda drawn the line at maiming someone. You brood for a moment before forcing those thoughts away. You need to keep your focus sharp and your mind empty of anything but the task at hand. This whole ordeal has a similar feeling to the Northern Assault, but this time you’re not charging into an on-going battle all alone. No, this time you’re with fellow Guardians and your own team, even if the only two members you have has more ways to irk you than please you.

The rain has turned from a drizzle to a full blown pouring waterfall from the skies above by the time you hear Rushi’s voice over everything else around you. He calls for the Breach to move forward. You and your team are the first ones to pull ahead while the five-man teams rush after you, trying to keep up. In the distance you can see members of the Vanguard leaping from the first hill to the next through the hard rain. The second bridge must also have been destroyed. Upon reaching the edge of the field you propel yourself through the air - over the hole steadily filling up with rain water - and make a graceful landing on the other side. Your team follow suit as does the rest of the Breach.

“Search the building and the tower!” The words leave your mouth before you can restrain yourself, but the orders are heeded nonetheless. This first hill settlement is filled with only human bodies, so the vanguard has yet to experience any casualties. The smell of death and most of the blood is swept away with the rain. There might be more humans hiding or waiting in ambush around, so you keep your guard up.

“Do you feel the presence of any masked humans, Shén Kū?” You ask aloud, throwing various glances about just in case. At the other side of the second broken bridge, you spot the vanguard clashing with armed Human militia and guards upon the ground around the buildings and in the wooden towers. No knights or masked humans in sight.

”We feel no presence of our kind at the base, but that may change on your way up. We shall warn you if any of our kind is nearby.”

“Thank you.” You sigh through the cold rain. The tower was empty and the others are clearing out the building. The vanguard is still fighting the militia on the other side, but they don’t seem to have any problems as of yet.

So far Chao is keeping himself in check, even if you know he’d love nothing more than to join the Vanguard here and now. Yu is keeping herself close by your side. Despite the rain, none of you are freezing.

No, stick to your duty. No point speeding things up and risking triggering something unpleasant in Chao. You hate having to tiptoe around the issue like this, but you need Chao to stay focused on the main objective: Save lives and move step by step up the hills until you reach the top safely. Suddenly something pulls your attention away from the Vanguard’s fight; a scream coming from within the building. The three of you find yourself under a roof in seconds, meeting the scene before you with a steady gaze.

The Guardians whom are part of the Breach has found a hideout holding a party of human militia ready to ambush any incoming Guardians. No Awoo is yet dead and everyone is standing amidst several human corpses. They’re lying about both broken and intact furnitures, with a built in stone hole where the Humans must have lit wood with the Red Flower to heat themselves up and the otherwise cold house. You don’t know its name, but it’s dead and cold by now. However, what catches your attention the most is what’s happening at the corner by the end of the building.

A single human has his back against the corner wall, holding onto a female Guardian with a dagger pressed against her throat while everyone else has taken a wide berth from him, weapons at the ready.

“Step back, you filthy monsters!” He screams at them, his bloodshot eyes wide open and his teeth clenched to the point of breaking. As you and your team approach the situation, you can already tell that Chao is quickening his pace, heading straight for the Human. Only the Tree knows what he’ll do once he’s reached past crowd of Guardians.

It isn't even a dick thing. It's more he may be a great fighter, but he's not a good tactician... let alone a strategist.

His plan is kill it until it dies.

Lin has actually, through us, considered the situation before action. Even as a child.

Chao also disobeys orders and puts his desire to kill before the safety of those around him.

At the very least, if he fucks this up, we have a concrete thing to point at to keep him from fucking up again. He could try and wiggle out of Jin's sacrifice, but going for the attack instead of asking Yu for help will once and for all prove his incompetence.

>Let him deal with the situation.

This is it. You’ll let Chao have this chance. It feels wrong to put the life of another Guardian in harm’s way and there’s no excusable reason you can tell yourself to justify it, but you need to know if you can trust Chao for the duration of this assault. You’d wager it’s going to be much more than a hour’s worth of trouble free climbing up to the top and for that entire time, Chao must be able to guard your back as well as you can hold the line at his. You stop in your march a bit away from the crowd, Yu halting alongside you, while Chao march onwards, disappearing into the crowd of armed Guardians. He knows as much as you that you’ve given him a silent approval to deal with the situation. Time to see if he’ll have any worth to the cause of the assault on this side of the fence between Breachers and the Vanguard.

You find a spot where you can see the scene unfold without anything in the way of your view. The Human continues to scream for the Guardians to step back, and despite not knowing what he says outright, they can all guess what he’s telling them to do the way he’s screaming and pressing the dagger in his hand against his hostage’s throat. Before Chao even leaves the crowd, a dagger comes flying out amidst the drawn Guardian Blades, embedding itself in the human’s hand. He lets out a pained scream and the dagger in his hand crashes to the floor. Just when everyone is about to move in or the enemy can react, the human is thrown into the corner wall behind him, finally letting go off the Guardian with his other arm. One of Chao’s daggers is stuck in the human’s hand while another is deeply dug into his frontal skull, the dead eyes crossed at the weapon between them.

Upon seeing Chao pull his daggers back to him with his yet struggling balance ability, the Guardian Blade in your hands stir softly in response, but no words are given.

“Good enough for you, Capt’n?” He inquires, shooting you a piercing stare. It’s not how you pictured he’d do it, but you answer his question with a firm nod before the three of you leave the now cleared house. He needs to work on his team work, but if he keeps this up - prioritizing Guardian lives over kills - he’ll be more useful. It’s still raining hard outside, but the good news is that the Vanguard has won on the other hill. Some breachers have already made their way over. The three of you follow suit with each a leap of your own.

On the other side, you spot a few Guardian bodies, but the different amount of dead Awoo and dead Humans is high enough to call this assault a success so far. While the Vanguard has moved on the smaller third hill, you imagine that the Assassins are halfway up the backside of the tallest hill by now. Your attention returns to the sight before you. Three houses and two towers. There’s already breachers heading to the nearest tower and the two smaller houses.
You’re on point to pick the target for your team.

>The wooden tower in the back.

You set your sights upon the tower in the back that overlooks the entire area of this hill from afar. It’s a good vantage point and from there you can also see the progress for the Vanguard. However, on your way over, you make sure to check in on the other groups from a distance, just to make sure they don’t have problems. Doesn’t seem to be the case since there’s no warning signals, or weird screams and noises coming from the houses or the nearby tower. You resign to the notion of ambushes over there for now, but your guard remains intact in the face of what might await you up in the tower. Its upper walls are high enough to hide a pair of bodies, so there might be an ambush awaiting you up there.

However, after climbing up the tower, you find it empty and discarded. There’s a bow leaning against the wooden railing, but no arrows in sight. Did the scout up here abandon his post with his sword alone? Weird. Either way, from here you can see that the Vanguard has already moved past the third hill, with little to no resistance in the way. They’re now fighting a fierce battle at the fourth hill, though you can’t see with what kind of enemy. Hopefully only more militia. If anything, you’ll face more knights and possibly also masked humans as the forces rise in height above each hill settlement. So far the resistance hasn’t been the strongest, but you have no doubt they’re saving their strongest forces for the last line of defense. Sounds like the Human way.

Through the hard rain you can see that the group that took on the other wooden tower found it as abandoned as you found this one. Whilst two 5-man teams breach the largest house, one of the other teams from the smallest house emerges unscatched. However, the group from the horizontally long house has yet to come out.

With this new information in hand, the 3-man team lead by yours truly leave the tower behind, eyes set upon their hopefully last target of this hill.

>Horizontally long house.

The two 5-man teams will cover each other going into the largest house. You need to figure out what happened to the team that entered the horizontally long house. They might have been caught in an ambush while you were away in the tower. Hopefully that’s not going to be the case. With all of your Guardian Blades unsheathed, the 3-man team move into the house at the same time, checking every corner and listening intently for anything. In the far back of the house you can hear voices. You can’t tell if they’re human or Awoo.

“Guardians.” Yu answers your unspoken question, her smile gone and replaced by a serious expression much like your own. She nods silently towards the door standing ajar at the end of the room, past the many animal carcasses who are either skinned or still intact but yet very much dead hanging from the ceiling. A butcher’s house of some sort. Abandoned from the looks of it, but who knows what you’ll find in the other room. The team make their way through the rows of dead animals stuck to the roof by chains and hooks. Chao remains untouched, but Yu avoids the dead ones eyes. You can’t afford to get affected right now, so you stay cold. Upon reaching the door open slightly ajar, you can finally make out the voices within. There’s four of them, and one of them is crying something fierce.

“Wha- what do we do?!” The crying one sobs. Her voice is breaking up as she fails to contain her tears.

“We need to continue with the mission.” A firm and authoritative male Awoo speaks up from within the room.

“And just leave the body- ah, I mean, leave Kyun here?!” Another male voice of a more coarse type erupts in defense.

“What about the body? He’s dead. We’re blood guardians. It’s a professional hazard.” The other male continues, justifying his reasoning.

“When did you become Captain again? I sure as hell didn’t vote for you.” The voice of the last member of the 5-man team inside the room voice her dismay with sarcasm and mockery.

“I became the Captain the second Kyun died.” He states, matter-of-factly. You throw a silent glance back at your team. Yu meets your gaze and then shrugs while Chao is firmly shaking his head with an irritated expression, as if it so say ‘No, not happening’.

>Leave.

Following Chao’s advice, you decide to leave, but not before you at least tell them what’s happening outside. The sarcastic guardian is in the middle of a rant with the authoritative former Vice-Captain when you knock on the door. The sound immediately kills all noise and conversation within the room. You make yourself known quickly, lest you find a Guardian Blade coming through the ajar door.

“Everyone’s finishing up their sweeps. We’re moving out.” You report and then turn about to leave. They continue to talk after a short while, but more calmly this time, but you don’t bother to sharpen your ears to hear what they’re saying. It’s not your mess - Out of sight, out of mind. You’ve dealt with that kind of situation one too many times in your life so far. Never again.

The hard rain doesn’t let up and it greets you again upon leaving the long butcher’s building behind. The Vanguard is still fighting past the fourth broken bridge, but the Breach is done over here, so everyone available moves across the bridge-less gap between this hill and the next. The hill before reaching the Vanguard only has one house. Three teams find their way in there before you, so the team of three resort to wait outside, under one of the thicker trees. You’re closer to the fight now and it’s evident that it’s still only militia forces, although in greater numbers. More and more Guardians are falling, but not enough to stop them from eventually wiping out the remaining humans on that hill.

“Hmph.” Chao scoffs at the sight of the vanguards through the rain. He still wants to be over there, but he has resigned himself to staying with you and Yu for now. It feels as though this is a great opportunity to start a conversation while you wait around, but add adrenaline and the sound of dying screams and steel meeting steel in the background, and everyone’s on edge. Talking about anything other than the fight would be pointless, and you haven’t even been in a fight so far during this assault. Chao has killed one human and saved a fellow kin, but nothing more. It’s turning out to be entirely different than you had imagined it, but that’s probably a good thing.

Can’t relax yet. We still haven’t encountered any knights or masked humans. There’s no way they fled with the villagers! - You clench your teeth, glancing over at the Vanguard fighting fiercely at the other side. You’re itching to join them, help them. There’s nothing else to do between that or waiting, watching Guardians die here and there while they tear through the Human resistance. However, if you do that and it turns out you could have saved the team that went into the nearby building, you wouldn’t forgive yourself.

You stay your hand, as you’ve decided on your objective even before the assault began. It wouldn’t feel right if you went against your own words now. Eventually both the teams from the building comes out, a little bit more worn for wear, but everyone’s alright. The vanguard finishes up the fight on the other side before pressing onward, leaving the cleaning to the Breach. The three of you leap over the last broken bridge, finding yourself in what appears to be the first actual village amidst these hills. The past ones haven’t looked like real villages at all and more like outposts and possibly a market of some sort. This settlement has actual standing homes.

As Chao and Yu take off towards a nearby house, you watch the Vanguard press their way up the natural bridge leading up to a taller hill. However, the second you look away something pulls your eyes back to the Vanguard and force your ears down to protect themselves. A huge explosion just erupted in the midst atop the next hill and even from here you can hear the anguish screams and cries from the Guardians ahead. A thick smoke cloud is rising to the sky, and the warm touch and the smell of Red Flower and cinder is fresh in the air.

There it came...

Chao is about to take off alongside a couple of other Guardians who has left their positions in the Breach to help the vanguard, but he stops himself, looking over at you intently, awaiting an order. Yu looks to you for answers.

>Help what’s left of the Vanguard.

Everything in your mind was blown asunder at the sight and sound of the explosion. For a second there, you didn’t even know who you were or where you were, but it all came back to you like the feeling of a knee crashing into your jaw. Something you’ve had the misfortune of experiencing before. You blink a few times, regaining your full consciousness whilst shifting your gaze between both Chao and Yu whom are looking your way, awaiting your direct or indirect order. Your mind is empty, but your legs move on their own. By instinct. You nod at Yu to follow you and upon seeing you rushing towards him, Chao turns about to quickly follow the other Guardians. They’re heading towards the taller hill across a natural bridge and two flat dirt stairs leading up to the flat top. The closer you get, the more the smell of smoke, Red Flower, and something unknown, yet familiar and horrid fills your lungs.

____

Torn body parts, charred to the bone, strewn across the hill, mixed in with the broken and burning pieces of what houses used to stand here. Amidst the black field of death, you also spot human flesh pieces lying about. By the Tree, they even killed their own men! The horrid smell of burnt flesh, charred death, and a putrid odor that you can’t explain nor justify pushes you close to vomiting. You hold it in, but the same can’t be said for the other two Guardians nearby. They empty their bowels on top the charred corpse of their now legless kin with a face so unrecognizable it doesn’t feel real. Your head is shaking and your vision feels blurry when you walk amidst this broken, black field. Not a single one survived… whatever that was. This reminds you of the sight you saw by the valley 3 years ago. Down in the crater where everyone but you, Heim, Chao, Ming, and Ai were left behind, charred and destroyed to pieces by the Red Flower. Reduced to nothing but a faded memory.

You stop in the midst of all this death and destruction, taking in the smell of everything, including the stench from your fellow Guardian’s fresh vomit. Your mouth hang agap and there’s nothing but sorrow in your heart, but with each thump of it, you feel something else worm its way through your body from an unknown source. But you know exactly what it is. The White Wolf. However, this time it’s not forcing its way up to your head, like you remember feeling before. No, now it stays close to your beating heart.

Sorrow is replaced by hate, empathy is replaced by disgust, and every single ounce of silent anger that you’ve ever held back has reached its boiling point. You haven’t lost control, but you’re definitely not the same Lin as this morning. You’re more Raubtier than Lin at this moment.

Good, little girl. Embrace it. Let it fuel you. Use me.

In the back of your head, you hear Shén Kū talking after the Wolf, but its voice is muffled. It’s a soothing feeling, even if you want to hear its voice. Your gaze is forced upwards and you lock eyes with a Human standing on the ledge of the next hill above the one you’re one. It’s the white devil from the North. The same masked human with white hair and a shit-eating grin who felt your violent intent as you hid from him. A sadistic smile is painted across his wide grin and he nods at you before backing off, leaving your line of sight.

He did this!

You look back at Chao and Yu. The former is meeting your unnatural gaze with a determined look upon his face while the latter is doing her best to not peer downwards and she’s pinching her nose shut. You’re no longer part of the Breach. You’re now the new Vanguard.

Kill them all.

Great initiative, although the problem would be how you'd come across the knowledge to do so, because unless Shén Kū knows how, you'll have a problem finding someone who does and is willing to tell/teach you. If it's even possible, that is.

There she stands.

Amidst the charred remains of guardians and humans alike. Amidst the yet burning pieces of what used to be homes and watchtowers. Amidst death and ruin. There stands Raubtier. The White Wolf has wormed its way from its cove within her body and coiled itself around her heart, setting all the repressed anger and hatred free at long last. Any restraint she once held onto dearly to remain a vigilant and dutiful guardian is slowly withering away in the face of an overwhelming desire to kill and destroy.

Raubtier throws her gaze from Chao and Yu who are both watching her from afar, trying to figure out what will happen next. Her yellow, predatory eyes shift to the scattered group of guardians walking among the ruins and dead bodies of their comrades and kin. They all appear more sad than angry, something Raubtier will soon change.

“Guardians!” Her voice rings out over the flat hill, turning the heads of everyone present; more than half the 5-man teams that joined the Breach. A far more numerous group than the former Vanguard. “Humans did this!” Her voice bears no hesitation as she motions for the destruction around her. No, it’s as clear and firm as ever. The virtue of a leader. “They killed everyone! Even their own kind! We treat them like they’ve treated us! Like animals, but no animal kills its own kind! Not in this forest, and not in this world!” Her gaze falls upon the many who are grasping at the charred remains of their former brave friends, only listening for now, “You’re all sad, we all are, but that’s what they want! They want to see you weep on your knees. They crave to see you beg. To see us all dead! Do not let them see you kneel. Rise!” She screams. She repeats it again and with it, other guardians start to chant it as well.

“Rise! Rise! Rise! Rise!” They shout in a mixed unison with their Guardian Weapons held high with each chant. One by one they rise - the Awoo guardians that were down on their knees, mourning the fallen - joining their brethren in a vengeful cry.

“Rise in fury! Rise in anger! Rise with vengeance! Show them what it means to be monsters in the face of True Guardians!” Raubtier roars at the top of her lungs, aspiring everyone to scream with her.

Yu is stunned while Chao is quietly smiling the biggest grin he can muster. He has no intention of pulling on the leash he holds. Correction, he has no intention of even holding the leash right now.

“Rise to me!” Raubtier shouts with her Guardian Blade held high right before she storms off towards the three roads off to the side leading ever higher to the next hill settlement. Every single guardian that was present is now following Raubtier in her Vanguard of Fury and Vengeance as it rises past the three roads and like a wave in a stormy night, the new Vanguard crashes into the Human militia gathered at this hill. Most humans try to run in the face of these bloodthirsty Awoo, but they’re too slow, too sluggish to flee. Those that stand their ground and fight are quickly swallowed up by the stream of Guardians cutting a bloody path up to the next flat hill.

The Vanguard is now but one elevating road away from reaching the top. In front of Raubtier and her amassed Vanguard there now stands militia, knights, and masked humans. There’s no room for flanking. Just a straight path ahead past the roadblock occupied by human forces.

“Charge!” Raubtier screams, pointing at their enemies with her blade and the Vanguard responds, crashing into the Humans like a wave against a stone wall.

After cutting down two militia soldiers, still ignoring the muffled voice in the back of her head, Raubtier comes face to face with a Knight and a Masked Human. “Left or right?” She hears Chao’s voice to the side. It’s up to her who she wants to face.

>The Masked Human

“Left.” She replies, brandishing her blade in the face of the Masked Human. The Red Flower around its arms lit up brighter at Raubtier’s decision. The Knight, honorable to its fellow human’s wish, takes that as its cue and moves over to the side to face off against Chao in the midst of the bloody chaos happening all around them. The yellow eyes of the Awoo pierce across the short distance between her and the masked human, staring directly into its crimson eyes.

She won’t underestimate them, but she also no longer considers them to be sentient creatures. They’re monsters. They don’t deserve anything. No mercy and no victory. She will not stoop so low as to refer to them as ‘her’ nor ‘him’. Every single human is an ‘it’ to her in this heated moment. The word is burned into her mind whilst staring at the no doubt expressionless human hiding its face behind a mask mocking the appearance of an Awoo. It infuriates her!

She leaps forward, clashing with the masked human. Her blade shifts from right to left and back again as it parries the human’s burning strikes. At first they don’t move, but gradually, the Human is forced backwards by Raubtier’s increasingly savage fury until its forced to a stop with its back facing another pair of fighters. An awoo and a human battling fiercely with steel cutting into steel, and blood and sweat tearing across their desperate and angry faces as each seeks to kill the other, no matter what. One fights for survival whilst the other screams for vengeance.

With the masked human halted in his steps, Raubtier takes the chance given to her to land her finishing strike!

>Decapitate its head. A swift and clean kill.

Her want to move on to the next kill overshadows her desire to make it suffer, if masked humans even feel pain behind their emotional expressions and actions. They die from wounds and blood loss nonetheless without the ability to regenerate that she possesses. In what might appear to only be a split-second, Raubtier has gripped the base of her blade harder and swung it horizontally in front of her. The fiery steel of the Red Flower that made the blade cuts through skin, muscles, bones, flesh, and blood as it courses through the human and leaves it with a hot, red mess staining the wet ground.

Without bothering to feast her eyes upon the human’s death, she rushes past the fight Chao just finished with the knight; the armor clad, taller opponent is lying face first in the mudded ground, its blood seeping out and washing away in the pouring rain. Her rival picks another human and continues with a new fight. Yu is nowhere to be seen through the rain and the battle.

Raubtier storms past three militia soldiers with lightning speed, her guardian blade slicing through their abdomens and throats as she pass them by, leaving nothing but bloodied corpses in her wake. Her mind is empty. Her every action and instinct is based solely on her own desires and the ravaging emotions coursing through her body, following the whims of the White Wolf coiled around her heart. Shén Kū remains silenced, its muffling cries nothing more than a slight annoyance in the back of her head. Like a fading headache.

She leaps into the air, crashing down atop a knight with a bloodied axe looking for a new opponent. The Guardian Blade digs itself into the small point in-between the knight’s armor. The sharp steel force its way through the human body and its organs with ease on its way down. Dark blood splatters out from the knight’s helmet and visor, pouring down its armor and tabard, muddling it in red along the rain. Raubtier pulls her red blade out and jumps off, kicking the dead human to the ground on her way down.

She suddenly hears the familiar sound of something crackling and roaring against the hard rain behind her. Shifting around, she’s faced with two masked humans leaping at her with their arms engulfed in their Red Flowers! She barely avoids their attacks, jumping backwards to find a proper footing to face their incoming assault!

“C’mon!” Raubtier screams at them over the rain, blade held high to meet the attackers head on.

Upon reaching her, Raubtier veers aside from the first one’s strike, meeting the second masked human’s fiery fist with her blade whilst she backs off to have both of them at her front again. She parries the second strike, anticipating the incoming flurry of pummelling attacks from her right. The fists sail past her dodging moves and the overreaching mistake is punished severely. The guardian blade leaves a deep jack in both the human’s mask and its jaw as it tries its best to avoid the sharp weapon reaching upwards in a vertical slash from below. However, neither human backs off and they continue to tear into the defense of the lone Guardian.

A roar escapes Raubtier as she leaps overhead the humans, landing behind them with a thud, splashing rain and blood from a nearby corpse all around. Swinging her entire body around, she goes down on one knee, letting the force of the momentum bring her sword about. The blade cuts through both legs of one of the humans, sending the body crashing into a pool of rainwater. Its companion lunges forward, its right fist coming awfully close to burning a hole into the Awoo’s cheek before she dives down on the wet ground underneath. He pass over her in mid-flight upon which Raubtier sends a kick back and up, hitting the human on his left hind leg right before he drops and rolls to get back on his feet. The damaged leg shakes in protest, but the human remains ever as unmoved by the pain.

The two crash into each other again, steel clashing with the roaring Red Flower, both opponents tearing at each other, clamoring for the death of one another. One second Raubtier makes ground and in the next the masked human has pushed her back. This furious dance between them continues as the battle ravages on all around them - Awoo slaying militia soldiers, knights killing Awoo, Guardians leaving dead knights in their wake, and a burning Vengeance clashing with a desperate want for Survival - the two forces tearing at each other’s throats.

With a beastial scream, Raubtier’s guardian blade leaves the masked human’s midriff, separating the upper body from the lower. The two parts split and crash into the ground. She finishes off the fight by plunging her blade into the head of the yet alive masked man with no legs. Her bloodied face meets the battlefield upon rising to her feet again, sword in hand. Before her she immediately spots both Chao and Yu. The former is facing two masked humans of his own whilst the latter is surrounded by both militia soldiers and knights. However, something else than her team members catch her attention. Straight ahead the path is open for her through the chaos to rush up to the top of the flat hill where the source of her anger and fury resides! The Assassins must have reached the top by now, so she wouldn’t be alone in her assault!

Kill. Them. All.

Raubtier’s shifting eyes stop at Chao who’s facing off against the two masked humans. Her eyes grow wide before darting ahead, closing the distance between her and the three others. She plunges forward with a thrust, just short of hitting her target. The masked human that she set her sights upon saw her coming and dodged in the last second to punish her missing attack. It aims a flaming strike into her midriff, but its stopped by Chao. The Awoo grabbed the humans long hair and pulled back as hard as he could. The pain didn’t stop the attacker, but its punch was interrupted nonetheless. Raubtier resumes the fight with a very aggressive stance, mirroring Chao’s own stance in more ways than one.

With no weakness in sight and no plan in mind, Raubtier pounce straight ahead into another swordplay against a masked human. It continues blocking the Awoo’s attacks with the Red Flower engulfed around its feminine arms and shoulders while also returning pummels and strikes at the Guardian.

This dance isn’t as furious as the last one, but it’s just as desperate as before. Two creatures fighting for survival and whatever moral reasoning or deadly desires they may have. It feels more methodical and precise than the savage dance from before. The masked human strikes at the Guardian’s weak spots and split-second short openings, forcing Raubtier back, giving the human more and more ground over the course of the fight.

Chao is too busy with his own foe to help his Captain, so Raubtier is on her own for now with an enemy that seems to be slowly - but surely - pushing her back. Its attacks are steadily moving closer to actually hitting her at this rate! However, be it luck or mistake, but something is on her side when the human eventually sidesteps a wet rock left on the ground, losing its balanced footing for a second. The Awoo Guardian takes advantage of the brief moment and releases a flurry of strikes, slashes, cuts, and thrusts aimed at every spot imaginable on the masked human with a speed rivaling that of several lightning strikes. All but one attack is blocked by the increasingly roaring Red Flower hissing at the enemy before it in the pissing rain. The successful hit opens a wound in the human’s side, causing it to back off for but a moment. There it is!

An opening!

Taking advantage of the opening, the Guardian known as Raubtier push her way back into the swordplay, pressing the human back as she continues to parry, dodge, punish, and block every single attack swung at her. Eventually the masked human reaches its end, as any and every human will at her mercy. Chao finishes off his masked human just in time to witness his Captain’s Guardian Blade tearing through flesh, bone, and organ - killing the masked human that almost stood victorious over her.

Whilst Raubtier’s gaze falls upon the now open path leading to the top of all hills, Chao throws a glance over at Yu. She’s gone but in a second she’s right next to her Captain again. Looking about, they notice that the battle is over. The new Vanguard lost a lot of good Guardians, but ultimately they slew more humans than they suffered casualties. The group now stands half as numerous as the last vanguard, but at least Raubtier has a decent fighting force to join up with the assassins at the top to kill that white devil bastard once and for all!

Let no one stand in your way. End this!

The group of Guardians ascend the last, twisting road heading to the hill’s top. Upon reaching it, they’re met with the sight of both dead assassins and humans. At the far corner to the left, Raubtier spot the last surviving vestige of the assassins fighting a desperate struggle for survival against an overwhelming force of knights and masked humans. Straight ahead there stands a large building, a hall if you will, where everyone can hear incoming running footsteps. There’s an alarming amount of soldiers heading out from the hall and the large doors stands wide open!

However, Raubtier’s gaze fix itself upon the two figures leaning over the cliff to the side of the hall, looking down. She immediately recognize one of them to be the white devil. The other looks similar to the other as well.

No matter what, she will engage them, but what of the others?

>Order Chao to the Hall
>Engage the Masked Twins with Yu!

“Keep them at bay by the gates!” Raubtier calls out for Chao, ordering him forth alongside a large portion of the Vanguard. The rest rush to the assassins’ rescue. In the meantime, she and Yu comes face to face with the White Devil and what appears to be his twin in some sick, twisted way. Neither one of them has activated their inner Red Flowers and they remain rather passive in the face of two enemies. The white devil is smiling with a confident smirk while the other is staring forth with an empty, but poisonous gaze, searching for weak spots. You can already tell that these two are very different from the other masked humans you’ve fought before.

“Dibs on the little one first, Herwick.” The white devil chuckles, finally pulling the mask over his head and cracks his knuckles loudly right before the Red Flower engulfs his arms and shoulders.

“Do not underestimate them, Sedgwick. They’ve come this far for good reasons.” The man named Herwick cautions his brother whilst equipping his mask and activating the Flower around his arms as well. In the heavy rain, it continues to roar and crackle loudly to the wake of the violent eastern wind. Raubtier’s hands grip tightly around the base of her weapon, raising the blade before her and the approaching two humans. The voice of Shén Kū remains choked by the White Wolf within.

“Left or right?” Yu asks over the rain, her back hunched and her blade at the ready. In her clenched left hand you notice several pebbles.

>Sedgwick

“Right” Raubtier mutters under her breath and as if on cue, the two Awoo Guardians split up, rushing their targets down. She sees the familiar sight of Yu switching through the air in the peripheral of her sight before reaching the Human called ‘Sedgwick’. She goes in for her first attack, but instead of aggressively meeting her charge, the human launch himself over the guardian’s head and touch the ground behind her. A swift kicks lands on her back and she’s sent forward, staggering from the force of the attack. She quickly finds her footing again and turns about, ready to face her enemy, but he’s not focusing on her anymore. Instead, Sedgwick is charging down Yu off to the side where she’s struggling against Herwick.

What the--!? Bastard!

With an ever increasing rage burning inside of her, Raubtier leaps after the human, but upon reaching him, he throws himself back just in time to counter her attack and punish the now overreaching Awoo. What she thought would be a fiery punch turned out to be a knee connecting with her solar plexus, sending her down to her knees in the wet and muddy ground. Raubtier throws her gaze up and amidst the heavy rain, a hand reach out to grab the fur upon her head. She recoils away from his touch and cuts at his legs. He jumps backwards in time to avoid the swing and make distance between them, but before he can land, Raubtier is already up on her feet and is bounding over to him in a leaping rush.

When her next slash aimed at his abdomen miss its mark because of a quick dodge, her following fist to Sedgwick’s face sends him staggering backwards long enough for her to slice down at him sideways vertically. Unfortunately, he’s faster than he has revealed thus far and leaves the Awoo’s sword distance with a shallow cut across his left shoulder, going down across his chest where it stops close to the right side of his ribcage. At the very least, now Raubtier knows that their protection is leather and nothing special made.

“Praise the Fire, you’re an interesting one!” He laughs, the Red Flower around his arms increasing in intensity as he springs over at her again with a wicked smile across his features!

>Aggressive stance. Meet his reckless nature with force! Offense is the best defense!
>Defensive Stance. Try to punish his controlled, yet reckless fighting style with a counter-attack! However, if it fails, it’ll leave an opening for Sedgwick to take advantage of.

>Defensive stance.

Even through her overflowing rage and clouded mind, Raubtier is quick to realize that counter-attacking this human’s attacks must yield the best results. Showing him aggression would be pleasant, but it might send her straight into his fiery maws as well. She’s too worked up to fight him passively and focus on strategies. She needs to kill him, fast. A glance to the side reveals that Yu is still fighting the other human. She’s switching about as best and quickly as she can, but in her panic she has developed a pattern that Herwick is starting to figure out given the increasing number of Yu’s attacks turning into blocks and parries on his end.

Raubtier holds her blade in front of her, awaiting the human’s next flurry of strikes, but he has begun to back off as well. His style and stance is reckless, but so far it hasn’t been aggressive enough to deal with accordingly through counter-attacks. Acknowledging these things are hard given her clouded thoughts, and the raw emotions and violent instincts influencing her every movement. However, luck is on her side when Sedgwick springs over with great haste, aiming to pummel the Awoo into a bloody and charred mess upon the ground!

Unfortunately for Sedgwick, he’s met with disappointment when the female Awoo sidesteps his first punch, letting it bypass her in its furious charge. Her blade blocks the second strike coming at her with the second fist, stopping the Human mid-charge. Raubtier tackles her right shoulder into the human’s wounded chest. The force pushes him backwards and the Guardian finds her opening to slash upwards, from right to left this time. The cut leaves a deeper wound in the opponent’s chest, blood seeping out and covering the leather outfit.

>Continued
>>
>>463159

However, instead of ignoring the wound like every other masked human has thus far, Sedgwick presses one of his burning hands against his chest, melting the wound shut, halting the bleeding.

“Hurts like a motherfucker!” He shouts as the odor of burnt flesh mix with the smell of rain, “But it’s worth it.” He chuckles behind the mask before bounding over to Raubtier again, Red Flower engulfed fists clashing with the Red Flower-made Guardian Blade in a savagely desperate fight for survival and the victory that comes with it.

After pushing the human away with what might she has left, Raubtier throws her body around and sends a roundhouse kick at Sedgwick’s head. A strike he barely avoids - yet loses his mask to the glancing blow - by leaping away only to arch his body backwards and fling his head back to land an upwards kick of his own into the Awoo’s jaw. The human crash into the ground on all four after half a somersault whilst the Guardian staggers away with the pain in her jaw throbbing with every step. Shaking her head, her focus returns to her before her blade finds its place in front of her right as Sedgwick rise to find his own footing again.

With his mask removed, his pained but still wicked and glorious smile is now in full display for his enemy.

Probably not and if there was any, it'd be covered by the mud and the heavy rain.

Possibly, but it's hard to make any advanced signals through the heavy rain. It'd be hard to just catch her attention to begin with.

>Signal Yu to swap opponents.

The hard rain makes it near impossible to give Yu any signals, but Raubtier needs to get her away from the Human who is quickly figuring out her panicked switch pattern. It’s just a matter of time before his fiery and crackling fist hits her, corrupting her with the Red Flower’s mark. There’s only one option readily available to her, but doing so will alarm both humans of what might happen next. Is it worth it?

Suddenly Yu lets out a shriek when a fist comes awfully close to hitting her throat.

It’s worth it!

“Swap!” Raubtier screams over the roaring rain and fortunately, Yu hears it but so does the two humans as well. The second she bounds over towards Herwick, leaving Sedgwick behind, the human chasing her is stopped by a pebble in the face that is swiftly switched with an Awoo Guardian with a sharp blade slashing down at its enemy in a wide arc! With a painful cry echoing from her back, Raubtier confidently launch herself into her fight with Herwick. He appears more reserved than his twin, but she can tell that the second she ran at him, he was already scanning her for any weaknesses or openings in her body language. He’s not as reckless or violent as his brother, but he makes up for it with better eyes, a strategist’s mind, and a cold ruthlessness. These two humans are still far from normal masked humans, or any human that Raubtier has encountered since she became a Blood Guardian.

“Make your move, creature.” Herwick edge the guardian on, hoping for a reaction. None but her angered expression is given.

>Go aggressive

What’s the best way to deal with someone who is constantly trying to find a pattern in your attacks and movements? What’s the most suitable way to punish such an opponent? What irritates strategists more than failed plans? Unpredictability. An aggressive, zero mercy, reckless, and abandoned aggressive offense. Leave them no chance to retaliate with a plan, no time to even formulate a plan, and constantly smash them with everything one has to keep them on their toes - forcing them to focus on their own survival first and foremost over defeating their enemy.

Raubtier isn’t thinking this nor even considering it. The fact is burned into her subconsciousness, and her emotions and instincts are quite eager to act on it and use the anger readily available for such a ‘tactic’. Herwick still has his mask intact, but the Awoo can imagine his surprised expression when the Guardian suddenly rushes him with complete abandonment, utilizing a reckless and aggressive method to tackle his methodical battle sense.

However, Raubtier finds herself on the receiving end upon reaching the human. He’s quickly adapting himself to her movements and attacks, as if he has been fighting someone with a similar style for years. She doesn’t understand it at first, but after receiving a kick in her stomach, sending her back on the ground, face first in the mud and rolling away from a burning fist slam aimed at her lying body, the pieces fall into place. She’s fighting just like his twin brother, Sedgwick! An opponent he must have spent a good while fighting and learning from and mayhaps even teached.

Let’s mix it up then!

After finding solid ground under her feet again, she re-enters the duel between Human and Awoo, still utilizing an hyper-aggressive fighting style but adding a lot of basic and traditional guardian movements in her deadly dance of steel. She always found them unnecessary when she enjoyed her own developed fighting style and stances, as does a lot of guardians, but in this case it might just save her.

The second Herwick is starting to adapt himself to Raubtier’s rhythm and style, she quickly stops using the former ones and adds another set of basic movements, forcing Herwick back to square one as she continues to punish his every mistake. Blade meets both the Red Flower, leather, and flesh as the one who wields it moves around her opponent in an intricate, yet savage dance of steel and blood.

Herwick finds himself backing away from the Awoo before him, cuts appearing all throughout his quite open and brown-turned-red leather suit. He’s shaking in pain and is unable to close his wounds with his Red Flower. Doing so would cause enough pain to force him unconscious. They both realize this in a heartbeat.

However, before Raubtier can finish him off, she hears a nightmarish scream to her right. Turning about, away from her defeated enemy, her gaze falls upon Yu who is held in a grip by her throat. She’s quickly choking in Sedgwick’s iron fast hand. In his other hand, he holds her small pouch filled with pebbles. As his hand clench around it, the pouch and the stones within it bursts into flames and ashes. Yu tries to find anything else to switch with, but the choking is too much for her mind and body. Her eyes start to roll back into her skull and her body twitches violently. Raubtier watch in shock and horror as Sedgwick throws the near unconscious Awoo over the cliff.

“Yu!” She hears the name leave her mouth, hand outstretched at the flying Awoo, but to no avail. She disappears over the cliff ledge just as Sedgwick comes rushing over to her and Herwick is rising to his feet again, ready for more. Something clicks inside of her, but whether it is her strong instincts as a leader or her undying flame of rage and vengeance rising, she’s about to find out.

>Try to push past them! Save Yu!
>DC Failed

Desperation and conflict fills Raubtier to the core. She wants to use every fiber of her being to dash forward and save her team member, to prevent another death under her watch and to keep the promise she made to herself intact! However, the White Wolf coiled around her heart is holding her back as the split-seconds are slowly ticking away in this time slowed moment.

Forget her. Kill them!

I need to save Yu!

She’s dead!

”No!” Raubtier screams, plunging herself forward, ignoring the words of the Wolf. Not even the combined might of both Sedgwick and the wounded Herwick is able to hold her back as she sprints towards the edge, leaping the last bit to close the distance. Upon reaching the ledge, she throws her gaze downwards, praying to the World Tree that Yu is alive. However, she doesn’t see anyone near the ledge or hanging onto the hillside. The heavy rain makes it too hard to see the bottom half of the hillside or the ground below. Yu is nowhere to be seen.

Foolish girl! The voice of the White Wolf rings in Raubtier’s ears for one last time before she feels its essence leaving its place around her heart and returning from whence it came.

With your senses returned to you at last, you blink a couple of times, still trying to find Yu amidst the heavy rain, but you come up short. She’s gone. Something swells up deep inside of you. The White Wolf that was coiled around your heart may have vanished for now, but the Rage and Hatred and need for vengeance was left behind in its wake and it just grew stronger from the thought of another team member dying.

”You need to control your emotions, Lin. You need a strategy to kill these humans. They possess each a piece of one overgrown version of our kind. Collective, their power is immense and it’s constantly growing stronger. Snap out of it.”

Shén Kū does its best to calm its host down, but you’re not having any of it. Every single ounce of hate and anger you’ve felt against humans and your own kind alike ever since that fateful day when the giant boulder crashed on top of the hill where your gran-gran was living and you changed is overflowing. Nothing will stop the unrestrained fury that is about to be unleashed from 3 years of captivity. Turning around, your right hand squeeze the grip of your blade hard enough to break bones as you quietly approach the two humans coming at you.

“2 versus 1. I like these odds!” Sedgwick laughs, his mask broken and not present, but a smile has replaced it.

“Focus.” Herwick’s unsteady voice escapes through the pain from all the cuts across his body and his eyes are narrowed at their opponent.

You stare them both down in silence as the heavy rain crashes down all around the three of you. They must die, no matter what.

The three fighters collide violently in a flurry of steel, Red Flower, blood, and screams. The White Wolf is no longer coiled around your heart, but your anger and fury is never ending. It’s become a source of uncontrolled strength - to the point of your muscles straining against your unhindered and unnaturally fast movements - and an indomitable endurance that makes your natural stamina and pain resistance look like jokes. Herwick is slowing down in his pacing, but in exchange he is directing Sedgwick in his assault while keeping a distance between himself and your Guardian Blade.

However, eventually he realizes that you can understand him when you do the opposite of what he’s telling his brother you’ll do next every time he opens his mouth. He holds his tongue and rejoins the fight in full.

You press your attack in a savage fashion so they can’t fully attack in unison. You put distance in-between your opponents when Sedgwick unleashes a flurry of pummels, focusing down Herwick instead to punish the twin’s stupidity. You use everything to your disposal, be it throwing mud in their eyes, cutting low, kicking at their groins, you name it. Every dirty tactic and technique exists to be used in this moment. This isn’t an honorable duel between knights or a sparring match between Guardians. It’s a straight up death-match. The only way of fighting the Awoo has known in the face of humans for the last 3 years. In this very moment, all the collective hatred of all the lost families, torn homes, and injustice done to the Creatures of the Forest and the Guardians is being unleashed through you onto Sedgwick and Herwick.

With a fistful of mud thrown in his eyes, Sedgwick doesn’t see when you kick Herwick to the ground and raise your blade high to plunge it into the twin’s head, ending him once and for all!

“No!” You hear a roar to the side, coming from Sedgwick no doubt! Your eyes don’t leave Herwick!

>DC Reached

Mistakes. Mistakes all around. Upon reaching you in his overextending leap, he’s punished the second your left free hand grips his throat with your unnatural strength - stopping him in mid-air. Without a second’s worth of hesitation, you throw him over towards the ledge, hoping to inflict the same fate upon him that he gave on to Yu. You’re not so lucky, but he crashes into the wet stone and slides awfully close to falling off the edge.

With his twin brother’s failure, Herwick’s fate is sealed. His wide, bloodshot eyes close - accepting death and defeat - as he witness the Guardian Blade plunge itself straight through his skull, burrowing into the ground with your hands around the grip.

“One down.” You mutter over the splattering of hard rain as you pull out your blade covered in blood and brain matter. Your empty and deadly gaze trains itself upon the yet alive twin who has just risen to his feet and seen his dead brother’s corpse, “One to go.”

The second his eyes leave the corpse of his brother - with a hole in the skull - he too lose himself to a crazed, bloody rage. As he rushes towards you, he appears more a monster than a Human, crimson eyes burning in a tail following the hateful creature Sedgwick has become. The kind you only hear about in tales meant to scare Awoo children. Whatever it is at this point, it’s heading straight for you with hopeless abandonment!

Maybe, but I think the price of power is too steep. At this rate we'll just become an animal in every sense of the word. And I'd rather we not become feral.

For now, we kill the asshole, walk a few steps, collapse into the mud and just cry/howl/scream ourselves into unconciousness. Its pretty much the only way I see this one ending.

Man, if Sensei could see us now. I don't know if he'd be angry, forlorn, or look at us with pity.

>End This.

The enemy has given up any thought or hope to defend itself. The Human-turned-monster is rushing straight at you. It has left all reason and logic behind. The shit-eating grin and those sadistic eyes are gone. In its wake there is nothing but a creature latched onto its hatred for the Awoo that slew the one man that has kept it from the abyss of insanity for all these years. That has - no matter what - never left it and always been there for it. Gone, body torn asunder and defiled by the very same Awoo Guardian that is the object of its obsessive killing intent. A dark light lit up in his soul that burns more brightly than the Red Flower around his arms that are still crackling to the touch of the heavy rain.

The two creatures of hate and anger crash into each other, no longer wasting any time on blocking, parrying, or even dodging. The burning pain of Sedgwick’s fists pummeling into you grows ever stronger whilst your blade and steel cuts through leather, skin, and flesh - spraying blood in a new direction with each and every slash. It’s no longer a fight for survival or victory. Death is the only thing on both of their minds. The death of the other, no matter the cost. You want him dead for more reasons than you can count on your fingers alone and he wants you dead for two simple reasons; you’re an Awoo and you slew his brother. Vengeance meeting revenge, but who carries what for whom is uncertain. Are you truly fighting for vengeance anymore or is it a selfish desire for revenge after everything that has been done to you, by both sides? Questions left unanswered as your mind lies empty whilst your blade and arms does all the work.

Eventually it comes to an end. You’re the last one standing - charred marks across your body - towering over the human who has knelt down from the blood loss. He can no longer even raise his arms, yet his gaze remains fixed upon you with a burning desire to rise, but he cannot find the strength to do so.

You’ve won, Lin. Calm down. Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out.

”Something’s happening, Lin! Beware!” Shén Kū’s voice echoes within you, and for a second you pick up panic in its otherwise emotionless tone. You don’t care what’s happening. You want to kill the human on his knees before you. Your arms are shaking, straining and protesting against every movement as you try to raise your blade, only to see them fall to your sides again. You can’t even raise them enough to properly kill your enemy. You sigh in frustration as the irony hits you.

Suddenly you see a red mist filling Sedgwick from behind. Shifting your head lazily and painfully to the side, you witness the red mist pouring out from Herwick’s body, scattering across the air for but a second before gathering and channeling itself into the other twin. The words of Shén Kū reminds you that you need to kill the human, but before you can react, a hand has gripped your throat with strength beyond this world, lifting your feet off the ground as it rises before you. The Guardian Blade is dropped on the mudded floor.

You stare at the human before you for the next few seconds with a sick curiosity, horror, and a building fury feeding off of anger coming from places unknown within the crevasse of your heart. Sedgwick’s wounds have all healed, his white hair has burned away, leaving a bald head. The Red Flower around his arms have ceased to exist and his eyes lose their color before they slowly turn black with a sickly crimson red center with roots reaching out across the black field. With the hand that doesn’t have your throat in an iron grip, Sedgwick caresses the top of his weirdly shaped skull, bringing forth a bed of wild and thick burning flowers that goes all the way down to the back of his midriff. It roars violently against the rain, as if it’s alive and apart from Sedgwick. The only words that cross your mind to describe it is…

Black Flower!

It feels so… good to be whole again.” Sedgwick takes a few breathes as if it’s his first time breathing fresh air on his own again, “His humanity was bitter, but… satisfying.” His black-red eyes shift nonchalantly over to you who’s still stuck in his grasp.

Finally, I can look upon the host for the raw and powerful kin of mine with eyes of my own. As my… ‘brother’ told me before I consumed him, you do not speak our language. Then allow me to grant you the courtesy you deserve.” With every word, Sedgwick’s cocky voice fades away, leaving nothing but a cruel and otherworldly voice that echoes outside of your mind. Like that of a creature straight out of a nightmare. Suddenly you feel something entering your throat through his hand, mixing in with the pipes between your lungs and stomach. “Complete. Say something. Anything.” The nightmarish creature with the face and body of Sedgwick implores you. In reply, you spit blood at it. It’s unfazed by your defiance in the face of an overwhelmingly pressing danger.

The voices are telling me… to remove you. Permanently.” He continues, not even bothering to wipe away your stain of blood on his face. “I say… you’re far too valuable and… interesting to be wasted like that. However, I cannot allow you to follow me any further than this. We shall meet again, on proper terms.” And with that, more wild Black Flower ignites across Sedgwick’s free arm. Raising it, he points it towards where Chao and the other Guardians are finishing up their fight. From one of the dead Awoo there comes a blade flying quick, its grip crashing into the fiery hand of Sedgwick from afar. With two swings and a precise press of the blade, you find yourself screaming in pain. He cut off your right leg and your left arm, and punctuated one of your eyes before dropping you to the mudded ground in the middle of the heavy rain.

We shall meet again, Raubtier.” Its voice reach you over the pain and exploding anger when you look up at him walking away from you. In an extreme struggle, you pull yourself up to your still intact leg and arm, crawling forward in the mud - leaving a trail of blood behind you - towards Sedgwick who has stopped by the cliff ledge.

“Sedgwick!” You shout at him in anger. He ignores you, looking up at the sky. You try to activate your Berserker Mode, but nothing happens.

“Sedgwick!” You scream with revenge in your heart. He looks over at you before he’s engulfed entirely in his Black Flower. The burning entity flies into the air like a black, ignited mist and disappears, heading towards the barrier in the far east.

SEDGWICK!” You roar with fury and pain wrecking and ravaging across your body and mind! Only seconds before you embrace the darkness that is unconsciousness, you hear a familiar, female voice coming from nearby.

“Captain!”

Yeah, this is about as shonen as Berserk's Eclipse arc.

I'm both upset that we failed to kill Sedgewick and glad he's not dead yet since he was one of the few humans I liked. Doesn't seem very human anymore, but still. There's also some part of me that wanted to end things on a more bittersweet note where we can have a small success of winning this battle before going back to despair. Only thing to think about now is how to unlock some more power ups to kick Sasuke's butt. Oh and apparently Mei found us so maybe something neat will come from that.

>>464494
I take it that's a bad thing?
>>
>>464508
On a technical level you won since you've crushed the Human hold of the West, but I get what you mean.

Been a thing in this quest for a while. Even when we pass the DC plot happens and we lose and thinks get even darker and more grimderp. Like our team hitting every attack in the first fight with the Grim knight and him still killing Kun off. Or us making a dodge check and "Lel nope because you have to follow the plot, you lose an arm and a leg." Or the shit with Yu, Making a roll and still losing an arm. Or Shonen forcing the White wolf to take over and destroy our mind without us making a control roll, then forcibly making it desert us when we actually need it.

>>464508
The MC of berserk's best friend activates a plot rock that takes the MC the freidns the Mc's lover and the entire merc company of the MC to hell. Everyone but the MC and his lover die. The freidn becomes a new demon lord and rapes the MC's lover right in front of him, corrupting their unborn child and destroying the lover's mind. The mc cuts off his own arm to try and kill the ex-friend and just when he seems like he might do it, demons dog pile on top of him destroying and eye. The other eye is held open as the demon lord rapes his lover right in front of him and there is nothing he can do.
>>
>>464532
>then forcibly making it desert us when we actually need it.
That was definitely on us. People wanted to save Yu for one reason or another, even though that choice was kind of pointless since all it did for us was clear our head for a bit and let the wolf run off.
>>
fuck me
>>
>>464544
Granted, Shonen still railroads this into maximum edge and grimderp.
>>
>>464481
I just don't even know what to say anymore. These pyhric victories continue to suck ass. I would just like a clean simple win. Just once.

Would love some bones thrown our way. Though I guess the hinting that either Yu or Mei found us is something. Though its more a milkbone than anything right now in the scheme of things. Maybe we'll get a training arc soon. Given our state, we aren't exactly fit for combat right now, regen be damned.

I think for me, the biggest problem comes from this simple question.

While the Guardians may have won and are starting to succeed against the forces of the flower, what has Lin personally won for herself, through her actions?

I, personally struggle to find anything that doesn't simultaniously have a "yes, and" or a "but..." attached to it.

On a macroscopic level, things are looking up/okay. But I think attention to the microscopic matters. And I think that is why there is a disconnect with the players.

But that is just one anon's opinion.
>>
>>464759
I can see your point on this one and I even agree with it. So far Lin has personally been suffering and struggling to win anything personally while still achieving large and small victories for the Guardians and the Forest as a whole.

However, I can assure you that it is something that has been taken into consideration and considering where the Quest's core value ultimately lies, it's safe to say that in the next few Arcs the players will have many more options to help Lin win more personal victories and achieve further character growth.

One of the stronger reasons for the Climax of this Arc - and everything leading up to it - was to finally show Lin at her lowest point. From here on out, she can climb with you, the players.
>>
>>464794
While it is good that you have seen the issues that are apparent as of this moment, I think what you just said also exposes the other issues some anons are having, which is the allegation of railroading.

When you say that one of the reasons for this arc was to have Lin at her lowest point, you have to understand that it looks bad to us the players when that seems to be the end goal here. It is kind of a removal of agency, especially when, as stated a lot of our successful rolls come with caveats and catches.

It is a fine approach on a writing side to have this line of thought, even if I think you overendulged a bit, but you have to remember that this is a quest and not a novel. The big thing about quests is that they are more similar to tabletop RPGs in that they have a loose structure. Sure you can have goals and plans in mind, but rolls and player decisions still take a major part in it all, and plans should be more flexible if we roll well. And while you may say that you are being flexible with rolling well, the results make it seem like this is not the case. It feels more like an extended prologue to get to the "real story" of the quest. Or I suppose if you want a more apt comparisson. Its like if One Piece started with the Sabo arc and not East Blue.

Now, with that in mind, I am still likely going to play as I can, and I hope that Lin can be brought to a point where she can feel happiness, pride, love, joy or anything else. But I have to admit, you're going to have to prove it that you'll be able to pull it off.

I wish you good luck on this admittedly, very tough task.

Although I disagree - looking at it from my point of view - I can see where you come from. The reason why a minority of you have thought things are railroaded, is because I am more unforgiving when it comes most rolls compared to some other quests (some, not all mind you). It is how the nature of this quest has been from close to the start. I have chosen to be unforgiving with the rolls to display the premise better - a struggle to get stronger to face the incoming menacing threat.

Thank you for playing and for the words of advice. It's appreciated. I hope to see you again.

More like DC must be beaten few times for something "good" to happen, meanwhile one DC not reached is immediate death, mutilation etc.
>>
>>465081
Eh, I don't think that's why people are seeing railroad.

It's more that there aren't many options. We automatically travel, choices are given etc...

More room for options, even in combat, would remove this feeling. Even if it resulted in a DC reach not resulting in YOU DID EVERYTHING
>>
>>465288
>It's more that there aren't many options. We automatically travel, choices are given etc...
I always include the write-in option for creative prompts if people feel restrained or don't like any of the prompts (the option for it was removed during the White Wolf phase because it was controlling you indirectly). I prefer there to be prompts to choose between instead of solely write-in.
>We automatically travel
What would you prefer instead of this? I'm all ears for input of this sort. Still trying to improve my QMing.

>More room for options, even in combat, would remove this feeling.
Now that's something I'll definitely look into. So far you've only brushed on stances and such, so I'll try to increase the number of options, brush up on them and the variety in fights.

>>
>>465484
If it's predetermined failure, why are we rolling?
>>
>>465493
>>Consequences for mistakes are BAD!
Literally never saying that. But making options that are literal trap with no indications as such, or fucking us over even if we pass a DC is pretty shitty Qming. The losing the white wolf was our fault, Kun getting forced into lethal position despite making his rolls then giving us options both of which were perfectly feasible, and making one arbitrarily a trap is just shitty. Kinda like a DM making a character autofail a will save then have them die or get raped or etc. If you're going to fuck the MC over even if we make all our rolls, why is this a quest and not story? Not like our input matters at all.
>>
>>465487
trap options are actually fine.

If the trap could be more clearly defined even AFTER the mistake, would be a lot better.

Even if you pull the whole anime "this is why you messed up" thing
>>
>>465530
Trap options are good for keeping players on their toes your opinion are invalid.
