It was on the fifteenth of December, in the year 2010, that the world changed. There was no particular reason for it, or at least none that can be proven, but nobody could deny that it had happened. Simply put, the old observable rules of reality had ceased to apply to certain individuals.

Physics, thermodynamics, any and all of the most basic laws of nature were twisted and violated around these rare, otherwise unconnected people. Lacking any other applicable terminology, the majority of the western world used a word made famous by comic books: ‘superpowers’.

In the wake of this unsettling event, those effected often attempted to emulate or become archetypical ’superheroes’, ignoring the law in favor of pursuing their own morality. As can be expected, chaos ensued. Grand wars were fought between as few as two powered people, with hundreds or even thousands of innocent casualties resulting. Cities, being the most populated areas, became common battlegrounds for these impossible people.

The world, as it had been, was slowly torn apart. Those with the most potent powers now exist as short-lived warlords, ruling and dominating whatever they choose until they are killed by another. Powerless civilians run or hide, their lives dangerously fragile in the face of the endless conflicts. Governments and militaries struggle to maintain the peace, or even just to stay relevant, by employing their own superpowered agents in what has become a constantly escalating arms race.

Such is the state of the world.

Not even those with powers are safe, and not every power is entirely beneficial.

Amelia Landric, now more commonly known as Gloom, was forced to run away from home after her abilities manifested, for fear of what others would do to her loving family if they discovered her. Her body constantly produces a thick, rolling fog that surrounds her and hides her from sight. Whoever happens to touch said smoke is overwhelmed by crushing misery and depression. Her breath produces the same effect, but it is physically poisonous and mildly corrosive as well.

>Powers: Gloom Fog, Acid Breath, Minor Fog Manipulation, Minor Emotion Manipulation
>Possible Future Powers: Precision Emotion Manipulation, Fog Constructs, Mind Reading, Fog Shape
>Character Flaws: Depression, Loneliness, Indecision, Naïveté

Daniel Azar, given the street name Scorn, was raised in a household with a deep hatred for superpowered individuals. This prejudice was turned on its head when he himself developed such abilities, however, and he was cast out. His fingertips rapidly increase the temperature of anything they touch, often causing objects to melt, burst into flame, or even explode. In addition, his adrenaline levels are extremely high at almost all times, causing emotional instability as well as occasional bursts of strength and agility.

>Powers: Heat Escalation, Elevated Epinephrine, Minor Speed Manipulation, Vast Pain Tolerance.
>Possible Future Powers: Speed Manipulation, Heat Manipulation, Fire Constructs, Epinephrine Manipulation, Delayed Heat Escalation.
>Character Flaws: Prejudice, Lack of Impulse Control, Antisocial, Violence Reliant, Emotional Instability

Neither of these two youths have much - or any - control over their powers. They unsuccessfully struggled to manage their conditions on their own, until they were individually taken off of the streets and recruited by Candor, a local superpowered criminal. She dressed, fed, and cared for the two of them, almost certainly saving their lives. Everything comes at a cost, however, and today marks the beginning of their repayment of that debt.

Which of these two will be your protagonist? Gloom, or Scorn?

I sit back in my ugly, uncomfortable chair. My knee bobs up and down quickly, like it always does. I hate sitting down. I hate this fucking place. I want to get outside. I want to get in a fight, or something. I need to do anything other than this. But no, Mama Candor needs me to do shit, so I have to sit my ass down and wait for her to get out her crime supplies or whatever.

“What is it, Canny? What do you want?”

“Sit still.” She orders. Bitch. Never explains anything. But she did save my life that one time, so okay I guess I can wait for a bit maybe.

“Fine.” My knee bobs up and down. My back itches. I wish I could scratch my back. Can’t do that anymore. Tried once. Still hurts. I fucking hate itches. I fucking hate them. “Hurry it up!”

“Sit still.” She repeats. Her hand is deep in her bag, searching for something.

“You said I was going to pay you back. I haven’t got any money. You know I’m not lying. What am I waiting for? This is bullshit.”

“Shut up. Sit still. It’ll just take a second.” Finally, she pulls out the thing she’s been looking for. Huh. It’s just some paper. Is it a contract or something? Did she get me a job? Oh, man, that would be so fucking stupid! So fucking stupid.

“Did you get me a job?”

“Yes, in a way.”

“That’s fucking stupid.”

“Okay, listen.” Candor leans forward. I tense up. That’s how she gets when she’s pissed. Fuck. I pissed her off. How did I piss her off? Fucking bitch. “Here’s how this is going to play out. You sit there, you little disaster waiting to happen, and you listen. No more insults. No more snapping at me. Got it?”

“Whatever.” I stare off at the boarded-up window. It looks dumb.

“No. Wrong. You say ‘yes’, and then you say ‘sorry’, or I’m going to take you outside and ground your face into the pavement until you start playing nice. Let’s try this again. Got it?”

“Yes.” I nod. “Sorry.”

“Good. And it’s fine.” She lays back in her chair. I look at her. She’s got her full outfit on. It looks so idiotic. She’s got this stupid bandanna on that looks like a big toothy smile. What is that for? Looks? So fucking stupid. And then there’s the one-eye goggle. It’s like she put her clothes together from the garbage outside of a costume shop. She says she knows some superpowered tailor or whatever, but I think she’s just got awful taste. “You’re going to do a job for me.”

“What?”

“Shh. Quiet. You’re going to do a job for me, Scorn. You’ll be working with Gloom - the sad girl, you remember her?”

“Oh, fuck that! I’m not going anywhere NEAR -!“

“Shh!” Candor leans forward again. I shrink back. “I haven’t asked anything of you until today, Scorn. I’ve given you everything you need. But now it’s your turn to give back.”

“Sure, yeah, okay, but I’m not going to -“

“Yes, Scorn. You are. Do I have to remind you of what life was like before I found you? You couldn’t even take a piss without setting your dick on fire. Now? Now you’re fine. You’ve got your special gloves, you’ve got fire-resistant clothes, and you’ve got a hell of a lot of free time. So, right now, you’re going to tell me that you’re going to do this job for me, and as many more as it takes to pay me back. Okay?”

“I…” I look at her. She’s staring at me. She’s using her power. Fuck! She can tell whenever someone is lying. Damn it. Damn it! “Fine! Fine. I’ll do it. Whatever.”

“Good.” She leans back again. I think she’s smiling, under that bandanna. Bitch. “Since you’ve been fairly good, I’ll let you decide where you go first. I’ve got a couple of options: you can rob a bank, you can rough up the idiot ‘hero’ who’s been running around screwing things up on our land, or you can take a message across town, through Crawdad’s turf. Yeah, seriously. Who the fuck is ‘Crawdad’? Sounds like a fucking furry or something. Heh, I bet he walks around with big dumb claws and a stupid lobster hat. What an idiot!

“Have you decided?”

“Uh, yeah, I’m going to do the message thing. With the Crawdad doofus. Heh.”

“Seriously? I got to wake her up? How am I supposed to do that without touching her misty bullshit?”

“Just knock on her door. She’s a light sleeper.”

“She’d better be.” I stand up and walk over to her door. I go to knock, but the door flies open and hits me in the face before I get the chance.

“I’m sorry!” Gloom squeaks, her fog wrapped around her like some fucked-up eldritch sleeping bag. “I’m so sorry, Miss Candor, I really am! I didn’t know how late it was, but I know I was supposed to be here and I am so so sorry!”

“It’s fine, Gloom, just - oh, shit, be careful!” Candor yells, but it’s too late.

Gloom’s fog already touched me.

What is the point of it all? All my anger. I am such a sad, pitiful man. I should just curl up and die. I miss my mom and dad. I want to go home.

I’m not entirely sure what’s going on, but I’m pretty sure nothing matters. Nothing ever mattered. It’s all so pointless.

Candor is waving at me, but I’m not sure what she’s trying to say. Candor is a nice person. I am not a nice person. I am a bad person.

Am I supposed to be doing something? I can't remember...

“…Fine.” As much as I want to get revenge, I relax, unclenching my fists. I can’t figure out a way to touch her without running into her fog, anyway. “I’ll let it slide. This time.”

“Thank you.” Gloom sighs with relief.

“If you’re really done with your impotent tantrum, we need to get back to work.” Candor motions us over to the table, showing us what looks like a vague map of the city and its turf borders. “So, let’s start planning. Gloom, your destination is The Hill, where I need you two to deliver a message to Sparrow. As I was just telling Scorn, going through Crawdad’s land is the best bet for safety, but it still might be a bit dangerous.”

“What’s the alternative?” Gloom asks, doing her best to keep her distance from the two of us.

“Well, you can go by way of Oldtown, but you might have to tangle with Mr. Skeleton. He’s generally pretty lax on territory control, though, so you’d probably be fine. The problem with that route is that you’ll have to go near Downtown to get up to the Hill, and that’s sketchy at best. Their security is on shoot-first rules at the moment, since the Grant tried to pull some dumb siege a few days back.”

“What about this bridge here?” I point to it on the map. Candor instinctively pulls the paper away from my finger. “Isn’t that the quickest way?”

“Yeah, but you’ll have to deal with the Grant. So, no. Not happening.”

“I can take them on, easy.” I snap my fingers. They spark. “Not a problem.”

“Stow the ego. I’m not looking to start shit with them. Not now, at least. Trust me, if the time comes that I do want some fireworks, I’ll hit you up.” Candor sits back, eyeing the two of us. “You’ve basically got two options. First: duck through the Hole, avoid the fighting there as best you can, rush through Crawdad’s woods, and hike up the Hill. That’s the safe way. Second: make your way through Oldtown, sneak through the wilds outside Downtown, and climb the Hill that way. That’s the fast way. What do you two think?”

“I, um…” Gloom glances at me nervously. “I’ll leave it up to Scorn. I feel bad about earlier, and I was late to the meeting, anyway.”

“Fine.” Candor nods. “Scorn, it’s your call. Which road are you going to take?”

Let's just go through the hole, the "safe" way. Maybe we can get into a fight in the Hole, and beat somebody up for some stress relief.

Wouldn't scorn need to have heat-resistance at least in his hands and wouldn't there constantly be fire coming out of his hands
>>
>>52187
Go the sneaky way. She can depress anyone who sees you into not saying anything, and smoke is good for cover. Also, you're lazy, and sneaking is less physical effort than running all day.

The fast way doesn't work because the grumpy cloud doesn't look like she can move fast, even if you can.
>>
>>52359
Well no but he should probably have fingerless heat-resistant gloves...
>>
>>53102
If his power is heat escalation (warming things up, in this case it's extremely fast and extremely hot) so shouldn't the air around his hands be ignighting or at least heated
>>
>>53102
Fingerless gloves would defeat the purpose of special insulating gloves. He can just take the gloves off to ignite things (which lends itself nicely to some one-liners, as well.)

Fingerless gloves would let him make a fist without burning the shit out of himself.

>Don't kill her tho, she's cute and if you play your cards right camraderie can be built and you can get down and dirty together when/if she learns to control her powers

Ick. Even if I felt like fucking someone who breathes acid and whose slightest lapse of control would lead to me getting all emo, I don’t swing that way. Not happening.

>Just pick one and say you'll go with that, but really take the bridge in Grant’s territory.

That sounds like a good idea and a good time, if not for the fact that Candor can always tell when anyone around her is lying or deceptive. That’s her power. Damn it all! Truth-sense ruins my day once again.

“We’ll go through Oldtown.” I finally decide. “We’ll be fine. Gloom can give the sad touch to whoever sees us, and I can handle any larger fights we run into.”

“Sounds suspiciously like a plan. Alright, then.” Candor flips the map over, writes down some more specific directions, and then folds the map up and puts it back into her bag. She then (very carefully) hands the same small messenger bag to Gloom. “The package is inside this, wrapped in brown paper. Be careful with it.”

“I will.” Gloom nods.

“If either of you get hungry, the bag also has some sandwiches inside, as well as a few water bottles.” Candor stands. “Good luck out there.”

“Thanks, mom.” Gloom smiles, then blushes, looking embarrassed. “Uh, I meant Candor! Candor. Thank you, Candor.”

“Wow.” I whistle, walking to the front door. I elbow it open. “Just wow.”

I head outside, Gloom tagging along behind me. That goon of Candor’s, Smiggy, immediately raises a hand in a ‘stop’ gesture. “No! Not you again! Whenever I let you through, you always fuck everything up!”

“Take it up with big C. We’re on an errand for her.”

“Seriously? She’s sending YOU?”

“Yeah. She is. So clear the way, unless you want a high-five from yours truly.”

“Okay, okay.” Smiggy starts moving sandbags out of the alley entrance. I look around. This place might be a shithole, but at least it’s well-fortified. “Go on, then.”

>he should probably have fingerless heat-resistant gloves

I have two pairs. One pair is fingerless. I keep both with me, though I’m not wearing either at the moment. I don’t really like wearing them. They’re made out of this weird industrial material, and they feel really scratchy and weird.

>Wouldn't scorn need to have heat-resistance at least in his hands and wouldn't there constantly be fire coming out of his hands

My thing only kicks in when I touch something solid. Air doesn’t count. As for my hands, I either avoid touching them with my fingers, put on my gloves, or just bear it. It barely even hurts anymore, as long as I don’t keep my hand closed for too long. I heal pretty quickly. Not sure if that’s a power or whatever, though. I think it’s just ‘cause I’m a badass.

Gloom and I silently walk together down the alleys of the Sprawl. We eventually come to a fence with a few skulls on it. No mistaking that - it’s the bone man’s personal mark. This is the border to Oldtown, and it’s locked down tight. No guards, though. My guess is that Mr. Skeleton doesn’t have many buddies to spare.

“How do we get through?” Gloom asks, looking worried. “Should we look for a hole, or something?”

I would, but Mr. Skeleton’s got this whole ‘bone’ thing with his power, and I don’t know if he has, like, bone sense, or whatever. If I started messing with his skulls, they might come alive or something, and fuck that!

The skulls also look kind of grody and old. If I’m going to grab a skull, I want it to be fresh and bloody.

“Why bother looking for a hole? We can make one ourselves.” I run my fingers down the fence in a line, then bend it back. I let Gloom through, then I follow after her and bend the fence back behind me. It looks obvious from up close, but I’m hoping no one will see it from far off.

“That was cool.” Gloom bobs her head appreciatively. “I wish I could do stuff like that with my powers.”

“Yeah, I am pretty awesome, aren’t I?” I motion forwards. “Keep moving.”

“Wow…” Gloom looks around as we walk down the street. “This place really got messed up after the Powering, huh?”

“What, Oldtown? No way.” I snort. “This place has always been a dump. If anything, it’s gotten better since Mr. Bones moved in. At least there’s less people, now. Vast improvement there.”

Oh wait, nevermind, it's a bone thing all right. And it's too late to let her move, it might see.

No talking. Just raise your fingers to your lips in a shushing motion. She has to stay quiet till it leaves.

Just mouth "dog.". Consider jumping at it to burn that sucker to ash.

Wait for the sounds of its feet to fade then tell her it was a skeleton-dog. With three heads and teeth as big as your hand.

Speak low, and quiet.

It was one of Bone's things. A dog. Just wait another minute and then we'll move.

“…Okay.” After what feels like days, I finally stand up. “I don’t hear it anymore.”

“Thank goodness!” Gloom sighs, relaxing at least a little. “What WAS it?!”

“One of Bone’s things. A dog, probably.” I cautiously walk by Gloom and peek around the corner. I can’t see the skeleton anywhere. “I think it’s gone. Just wait another minute, and then we’ll -“

I’m interrupted by the nearby sounds of someone screaming hoarsely. “Someone, help me! Please! He’s coming! He’s going to kill me!”

Gloom and I exchange looks. She seems unsettled. “What do we do?”

“I don’t know.” I look around. There’s nobody in sight. “Maybe we should take the chance to run.”

“We can’t just leave them, can we?” Gloom hesitates. “Shouldn’t we at least try to help?”

You're not heroes. Why should you help? This isn't even your territory.
>>
>Shouldn’t we at least try to help?
Leaving people who've seen us kind of runs counter to stealth.

Unless you're willing to zonk everyone with sad, even the person calling for help.
>>

Of course we can fuckin' leave em, this isn't our turf.
>>
You can't just ignore a scream like that, something interesting might be going on. Check it out for curiosity's sake.

“Of course we can fuckin’ leave ‘em. Why should we help? This isn’t our turf. Our job is stealth, remember? In and out.” I leave the alley, moving as quickly and as quietly as I can. “Come on, we need to move while we have the chance.”

“But…” Gloom falters. After a moment, she reluctantly follows after me.

As we make our ways through more alleys, darting through the back ends of neighborhoods, I can hear the yells for help be replaced by gurgling shrieks, and, soon after that, silence.

“We should have helped them.” Gloom looks like she might cry. What a fucking baby. “We should have done something.”

“Those might have been our screams, if we had.” I glance at her. “Try to forget about it. Just keep moving.”

Gloom stares unhappily at me, but she continues to follow regardless. For a while, the two of us silently make our way through Oldtown. Then, suddenly, Gloom stops, kneeling down beside a small fence.

“What is it?” I crouch down near her.

“Skeletons.” She points. “What do we do?”

“Shit.” I squint, searching the area for a way past them. There’s none that I can see. “They’re blocking the main road to Downtown. I’m not sure if there’s a good detour around, either. Fuck. This isn’t going to be easy.”

“True. This certainly won’t be easy.” Agrees Mr. Skeleton. “Not for you, at least.”
