[Based off of Digital Devil Saga, Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, the Deus Ex series, and about twenty other different assorted cyberpunk and urban fantasy stories. Enjoy!]

You stare at yourself in awe, your fingers whirring to life.

Something's gone terribly wrong.

Your name is... Or probably was, John Smith. That's what it said on every government document, and that's the name you went by. You work, or worked, most likely now, as a freelance cracker, facilitating the data wars between corporations in the rotting megapolis of Neo York, a neon-washed land of privately owned police, privately owned governments, and privately owned lives.

None of the politics ever mattered to you. You were just good at what you did, and then you got paid, and then you could tuck into a nice platter of sushi at the local place near your joint. Sometimes you got paid enough to hire a hooker, sometimes not. You didn't have a ton of implants compared to some of the other crackers you've seen - an RFID finger for remote controlling the electronics in your apartment and turning on the ignition for your motorcycle, and a standard headport for jacking into cyberspace and surfing the data waves like the rest of your code monkey brethren. Life was simple, life was good.

You had a bad feeling ever since this morning though, when you took on your latest job. Goetia Enterprises, one of the most secretive megacorps dueling for dominance in Neo York. Nobody knows their products, nobody knows what their PMC symbol is, and nobody knows anything but their name, and the fact that they exist and are in business. Just tracking down their purple-cast tower was a job and a half, but the price tag on this one was astronomical. You got in, noticed the lack of security, robotic or otherwise, and made your way to the server farms to begin working.

You look around. You're still in the same place but you can't feel your head jack plugged in. Your entire body is on fire with some sort of hunger that needs to be satiated and you're not sure what will fill it up. You taste the metallic tang of blood in your mouth, a taste you're all too familiar with.

{Choose your Steelshape, please}

STR+ Strength is used to overpower enemies and destroy them with your bare hands, or whatever else is available.
SPD++ Speed informs your reaction time and ability to move fast, faster than other people, and just fast enough.
DEX= Dexterity involves your ability to be precise, specifically with the aiming of guns or other precision weapons, as well as aim for vital parts with melee strikes.
STA- Stamina is your overall bodily condition - how much it takes to kill you, more or less.
CTR-- Control is the ability to resist your hunger for flesh and metal. Lack of control makes it easier for you to, of course, lose control, which is only rarely a good thing. Having higher Control allows you to integrate new parts more easily.
NRG = Energy is your fuel. When you discover new abilities to use, energy fuels all but the most basic of them, and having higher Energy allows you to successfully utilize more exotic parts.

Abilities
Wiretap 1 - You can perform a CTR roll vs your target's NRG once per encounter. If you succeed, you can disable up to one of their abilities until the encounter is over.

Rolls in Cyber Demon Quest are based on a relatively simple system. You roll a stat vs either an appropriate opposing stat, or a DC check for environmental threats. A stat with a rating of = will grant you 1d10 to use, and each + provides an increase of two to the original dice, as well as an additional 1d3 (1d10 + 0 -> 1d12+1d3 -> 1d14+2d3, etc.). Having minuses isn't quite as complicated, simply decreasing the base dice by 2 (1d10 -> 1d8 -> 1d6, etc.)

Your form is rotten, metallic, and elongated - black spines emerge from your neck and roll down to your tailbone, with a thick black wire about the thickness of a forearm emerging from t hat point and lying, flicking gently against your will - you guesstimate it's probably six feet long or so before terminating in a cluster of copper wires folded into a small lump. Your ribcage and what remains of your human spine is most definitely on the outside of your torso, wrapping around the squishy, semi-flesh semi-silicon that you seem to be mostly composed of now.

Your head has been contorted in a similarly horrifying manner, with the top half of your skull having ripped out of you and formed into a bone and metal helmet with one large, protruding horn and two small batteries where your ears used to be. Your jawbone has melted out of your chin, with new, black metal teeth filling your jaw out like a shark. Your arms and legs have elongated into horrifying, bestial mockeries, fingers tipped with four razor sharp claws and an articulated claw-thumb where it should be, while your feet, heavily armored, have become great engines of speed and motion, as some sort of blood-like fluid pulses through them, hot and squishy inside you.

You're no longer human.

Currently, you're in the server farm of Goetia Enterprises, and you hear the sounds of several footsteps, marched neat and orderly but swift in motion, coming down the hall. Likely security forces. The thought makes you begin drooling a black ichor onto the ground, and you try to clamp your mouth shut to find that it's stuck hanging slightly open. The server room is dark outside of the blinking lights of the farm.

To be fair, while your form is horrifying, mildly disgusting, and filled with unnatural pangs of hunger that cause you to salivate at the thought of consuming flesh, you appreciate the added mobility. Trying to remain as silent as possible, you dig your nails into the server farm and haul yourself up to the top rack, crawling forward in the darkness with your tail gently pulling itself to where it should be. It's cooperative when it wants to.

Watching the shut door, you see a group of silhouettes go by the window, and with a BANG, one of them kicks it open and the group flushes in, neatly ordered footsteps as they sweep the hallways with gun-mounted flashlights. You count the best you can - there's 6.

As a Steelshape, you are on an entirely different level than most humans, who have the lowest stats possible in most cases. For each - on STA, a Steelshape loses 1 max HP, and for each +, they instead gain 2 max HP from the base of 6, but humans are always at 1 HP - and are always devourable. In close range, any attack you make is guaranteed to hit a normal human and kill them, and most conventional arms can't harm a Steelshape. Consuming humans provides you with no EXP, but does restore 1 HP and sates a small amount of hunger.

You're fast - incredibly so, and strong enough that you could probably punch right through one of the servers if you felt the need. Instead, you lie in wait like a cat toying with prey. It feels... Right. Almost natural. You go for the one in the back, the only one in his row of servers, and reach down with your gangly arms.

How to kill, how to kill...

You stiffen your claws, four in a row, and ram them through the back of his neck, instantly severing his spinal column and nearly decapitating him. You grab him by the shoulders and pull his body up, bringing it on top of the server rack with you and watching as everyone else lurks with guns pointed and ready.

Blood drips down the servers as you lick your fingers clean with a black cable that's taken the place of your tongue, evidently. Tastes good.

There's four aisles in the room, with three racks of servers outside of the ones plugged directly into the walls. You're on the middle rack, with the outside aisles occupied by two security guards, and the aisle to your left occupied by a single one instead. They don't seem to have noticed the disappearance of their compatriot.

Easy prey.

You do more or less the same thing to the other one, waiting until his sweep brings him close enough to you, and then ramming your hand through his neck completely, severing his head. You immediately dig your other hand into the top of his skull to prevent it from falling and making noise, while the body teeters on the edge, about to fall with no brain or head to pilot it.

Considering you're evidently powerful and armed enough to decapitate someone with a jab to the neck, you don't really think that you're in a lot of danger at the moment. Flipping the head of the killed PMC upwards, so that all of the delightful blood doesn't leak out (and taking a sip first), you lob it like a grenade as hard as you can, jostling a server loose as it crunches onto the wall, misshapen by the impact, and falls towards the two PMCs on the left side of the room, who immediately whip towards it and begin to fire, shredding it to pieces with coordinated gunfire.

Their chatter is immediately audible as they begin sweeping the room much more frantically, speaking in military language that you don't understand and making furious hand motions at each other.

Unfortunately, they also begin pointing their gunlights upward, and when they converge in the middle of the room, they catch sight of you, the headless torso, and the nearly-headless compatriot.

Initiative in combat is usually determined by a match of Speed vs Speed, but since normal humans are so frail in comparison, their reflexes are like a small, helpless baby to even the slowest of Steelshapes, and you will always go first in a combat engagement. During combat vs a Steelshape, regardless of who starts the fight first, the faster one usually gets their hits in before the other one.

In one swift, smooth motion, your tail latches on to the corpse behind you and hurls it over your shoulder so that you can grab it by the arm and toss it much faster as a distraction. Thankfully, the PMCs seem to be wearing body armor of some kind, so the spray of bullets from four semi-automatic weapons doesn't completely shred it apart as you leap off of the shelf of servers, over the corpse, and towards one of the PMCs. You immediately cave in his ribcage by stomping on it, crushing his heart into a red paste, and then whip around, severing the one next to him's legs at the knee and then reaching up through his groin to grab something squishy and coiled up and rip it out through the newly made cavity. He still seems slightly alive after that, so you whip him in the head with your tail, hard enough to easily give him a concussion and prevent him from firing back as he bleeds out.

With that, there's only two left and a bullet ridden corpse that just softly lands on the ground. They turn to you, backing up and immediately beginning to fire while you raise your arm up and see flashes of phosphor as the bullets bounce completely off your armor painlessly, and only send a dull thudding pain through your 'flesh' as they fail to penetrate.

Their eyes are covered, but their body expressions read total fear. Time to contemplate some creative murder.

You have enough control over your tail, it seems, when you're actively using it for purposes of murder - otherwise, it seems to gently drift from side to side. Despite seeming to be nothing but wiring, it's strong enough for you to sweep it at one of the PMC's feet, intending to just knock him over, but instead cleanly and visibly snapping his leg in two. You hear a screamed "Damnit, damnit, damnit!" by the other one, who you begin choking with your tail while the one who's leg you snapped just yells in pain.

You lift the one in your tail up by the neck, slowly closing it around his windpipe as he struggles to free himself and drops his gun to try in vain to pry you away. The other one, well, a finger poke to the eyes is much more dangerous when you're strong enough to punch through someone's pelvic bone, and have claws literally made of metal. Just a thrust to the eyes and he begins blindly firing towards you, so you grab his gun and rip it in half before plunging your hand into where his now-scrambled left eye is and caving his skull into his brain.

Then, you turn to the one currently being strangled to death. That's not fun. There's a thump to your right as the newly-constructed corpse falls, twitches maybe twice, and then expires completely. All you hear now is the squishing of blood and meat and labored, pained whimpers that grow much louder as you find the PMC's ribcage, dig your nails in slowly until you can wrap your claws around them, and rip his chest cavity completely open, shattering his clavicle in the process. Yeah, he'll bleed out in immense pain, but you're a man of more immediate satisfaction, so you pull your tail away, let him slump and take a breath, watch his lungs expand once, then deflate, and then stab him through the throat with your tail.

The room is silent, bullet-ridden, and covered with blood. You feel a vile hunger begin to overcome you at the sight of so many luscious corpses.

Your ability to resist your hunger is based on your CTR, and gets significantly more difficult the less you've eaten. Consuming an entire human takes 1 minute per corpse, and is very noisy, messy, and completely un-stealthy, but is essential to remain in control of yourself. With a CTR rating of =, you must eat at least 1 human per 6 hours, decreasing by a single hour per - (Saurian must eat once every 4 hours). Eating additional humans before you get ravenous will only delay the timer by 1 hour.
Once you fail to eat enough, the next time you have the opportunity to do so, you will have to roll CTR vs 1d10 to avoid not immediately killing and eating the closest human, once per hour, increasing by 1d10 each time period you avoid eating (8 hours = 2d10, 12 hours 3d10, etc).

Your feeding is loud, sloppy, and messy. Your teeth jut outward as they seem to detect that it's time to eat, growing longer as they do so, while the black ichor that dripped from your mouth earlier begins to flow at an obnoxious rate, leaking between your fangs to pool on the ground. Your tongue helps pry the meat from the bones as you crunch your way through the weak and frail bodies of three of the disembowled and destroyed security guards, your teeth strong enough to crunch straight through even the hardest bones and your body hardy enough to withstand having sharp pointy hard parts in your throat. You feel all of them settle in your stomach, your body naturally compressing them like a trash compactor as it feeds them into whatever sort of excuse for a stomach that you have now.

You feel them burning up, converted and crushed into some kind of liquid paste that you can similarly feel begin to pulse itself through your body like blood. The sensation is incredible, almost addictively so, and by the time you're done eating, your stomach is empty again.

You take a minute to collect yourself, now, with the haze of hunger gone from your mind. Your name used to be considered by the world at large John Smith (you were never a fan of having names to begin with, to be fair), but for all intents and purposes, you might as well be as gone as your birth name. Something instinctual tells you that, not you, but your body is called Saurian, as a title, like warrior, or cracker. You're on the 30th floor of the Goetia Enterprises building, which is shaped like three concentric circles that slowly rotate around each other, with the inner ring part being elevators and people movers, the middle ring containing hallways, closets, and server farms, and the outer ring containing nothing but probably miles of corporate offices and dark, tinted windows.

Really, honestly, when you think about it, there's only one real course of action here. You dig your fingers right into the doors and easily pry them open with a bit of effort, which is impressive for the doors to make you put that much into it. You ram your claws through one of the walls and then use your tail as a belay to hold you to the cable that pulls the elevator every which way (which is to say, up and down), and begin to climb your way down the wall of the elevator shaft.

It's 30 floors, so it's a long way down. For a bit, you reflect upon your life that brought you here. You were born, went to school, fiddled with computers until you were good enough to live off of it, and then lived off of it. You've never had any serious romantic prospects, you've never really done anything to stand out, and, in fact, you've preferred being in the shadows and running from serious problems. Personality wise, you were always the type to make a little bit of trouble on the down low, and then blame it on someone else - a growing sadist, before ennui stripped you of those feelings.

It's wonderful to note that you still act completely as you would if you were suddenly given a giant hulking robot monster body. So at least you still have your mind, or personality.

You climb down to the top of the elevator resting on the first floor, and then climb up a floor before letting go of the wall and cable and letting your weight slam you through the roof, creating a small crater when you land through it.

Then, you pry these doors open.

"Baby has left the nest. I repeat, baby has left the nest." You hear through muffled, distorted voice, distinctly mechanical, echoes around an empty, clear lobby. You hear the click of dozens of guns readying to fire as you emerge into a semi-circle of PMCs, with an imposing figure standing in the middle, its own tail swishing back and forth.

"Stand down, Steelshape. Put your hands above your head and come quietly." The tall figure says. That's not to say you aren't tall - if you stretch yourself out and don't hunch over and point your head and neck straight up, you'd probably be about 7 and a half feet, and that's incredibly imposing, but even then, this guy is a clear yard taller than the tallest PMC you can see.

Hostage negotiations won't fly in this scenario, I don't count on a PMC in a Cyberpunk/SMT setting to care much about their soldiers.

You decide that in this scenario, the best course of action would be to retreat, at the very least so you can escape. Thus, you bend down on your legs and leap backwards, grabbing the top of the elevator's opening and pulling yourself in while your tail assists. You're immediately greeted in a hail of gunfire as you pull the elevator door shut, watching as dents begin to rapidly form in the metal while you scuttle up the elevator shaft.

"Hold your fire! I'll deal with him myself."

It's deathly quiet - all you can hear is the heavy footsteps of the other Steelshape approaching the elevator, then the sounds of the door being completely peeled off and tossed away. You slink into the darkest part of the elevator shaft, watching for him to walk in.

And then he punches clean through the shaft like an axe-wielding maniac at a hotel busting down a door, surprising you while his other fist makes a second hole, and together they scoop out a chunk of metal for him to climb through.

>Roll SPD (1d14+2d3) with your action, highest of the first four responses wins.

"You seem a little busy, so let me help you up!" You growl, beginning to grab and yank. Black ichor sprays like from a broken hose as you attempt to rip his head off, while he scrambles to grab at something and make you stop.

Unfortunately, he fails to act fast enough. You rip his head clean out of its socket, and he scrambles for a couple of seconds before slumping over, black blood pouring out of the open neck stump. The PMC's look like they're about to fire, but the majority of them begin to break rank and drop their weapons in the scramble to get away.

You decide for now that the only proper course of action would to display the corpse like a grim totem while you feast on the flesh of your fallen enemy. You pull the cable upwards and simply wrap it around his ankle, leaving him flopping, his black blood oozing like a fountain out towards the lobby while you spend a couple of seconds crunching through his metal head with your razor-sharp teeth.

Abilities
Pugilist 1 - Your STR is increased by + for rolls involving punching or kicking.
Heat Vision 1 - Costs 4 EP to activate. You can temporarily see Steelshapes and living organisms through thin walls for either 1 round of combat or 1 minute real-time.

EP is short for Energy Points, one of two ways to use your energy. All Steelshapes start with 6, increasing by 2 for each + or decreasing for each - (Saurian has 6). You receive 1 EP whenever you kill and devour a human, or half your maximum EP by killing and devouring a Steelshape.

You must consume at least half of an enemy Steelshape's body mass, including their head, to add their abilities to your ability pool and gain EXP.

You eat.

And eat.

And eat and eat and eat.

You're not going to get in detail about the messy process, but the inside of a Steelshape's body is interesting indeed. It looks like great big balls of wire replacing muscle, with empty cables in place of veins and arteries, but there's also something distinctly biological about it, with meat between the wires and flesh right underneath the metal. Warped flesh that's completely fused with it, yes, but flesh nonetheless.

You eat and eat until you're full, and then you eat a little more, leaving the lower torso, legs, and spine of Kaiju hanging from the cable. You feel completely satiated for the time being, ready to go and take a nap or some shit.

After you consume enough Steelshapes, you will level up, which allows you to either a: upgrade an old ability, b: mutate a new ability, or c: add an ability from the consumed abilities pool for your abilities. In order to level up, you must consume Steelshapes until the total level of all Steelshapes you've consumed exceeds your own (two level 1 Steelshapes, or one level 2 one, will both level you up from 2 to 3).

As Kaiju is a level 2 Steelshape, you earned two experience points. However, in order to metamorphose your new abilities, you must find a safe location to do so, as it takes an hour or more and leaves you vulnerable.

Every third level (4, 7, 10, etc.), you may add a + to one of your statistics, up to a maximum of +++++.

You step out of the broken elevator shaft to find one of the PMCs having passed out on the floor and, evidently, pissed themselves. The lobby is completely empty, ground slowly rolling around underneath you as the building rotates around. The exit to the city is a massive series of curved windows, each one tinted dark, with the lights in the lobby dim enough that you can see outside, but you doubt that the neon-washed city can see in.

You leave, although not before picking up the PMC as gingerly as you can and hauling your way over to your old apartment. You see your ride, a small, refurbished motorcycle, that you easily cannot fit anymore, so you figure you might as well puncture the gas tank. If anyone follows you, they'll probably step in the puddle of gas and you'll be able to track them by scent (which, like most things about you, seems to have improved dramatically).

Fortunately, nobody follows. You keep to the shadows, occasionally leaping up fire escapes that struggle to hold your new weight of about 1 ton, compressed into just one body. You can't say for sure you have any idea where the extra mass came from, nor do you even care.

You arrive at your tiny, cramped apartment, which was small even when you were human. You were right - you can't stay here, not for long. Even if nobody's following you, you aren't tired and you doubt you'll get tired anytime soon.

The PMC is thoroughly conked out. You could probably splash him with some water to wake him up or just wait on its own. One person is not a threat at all.

Wide Jaw 1 - Enemies can be devoured whole at 1 hp higher than half.
Shadowlurk 1 - SPD increased by + for rolls involving moving while unseen by anyone.
Tonguepunch 1 - Perform a SPD roll vs your target's STA. If you succeed, deal 1 point of damage to them. Can be used once per encounter to an enemy at close range as a free action.

Integrate Ability

I would have said Shadowlurk, but our SPD is already ++, so I think we'll get more mileage out of Pugilist at least right now. Tonguepunch is almost guaranteed damage, but it's just 1 at this level. Heat Vision could be useful, though.

Gently swishing it in circles, you wait until it gets nice and cold and then toss the water onto the face of the PMC, plopping the ice cubes right against his forehead, where they bounce off and crack slightly before falling to the floor.

It takes a couple of seconds but he scrabbles to his feet, kicking and screaming, so you gently offer your tail to him and by that you mean you shove the black part into his mouth to muffle him, gently shoving him against the pillow until he calms down. Once he stops screaming, you pull your tail away and look down at him, towering over his cowering form. The apartment smells faintly of piss and shit now. Asshole.

A STR= Steelshape can dent inch thick high-carbon steel with their striking implement of choice, while a STR5+ can casually toss around train cars and construction vehicles like you or I would flip a coin.]

When we lose control, how much can we decide for our actions or do you just control us?
>>
>>588521
[When you lose control, you automatically follow one directive - find the nearest human or Steelshape and attempt to devour them. Anything in your way gets ripped open or punched through. Obviously, this is bad in a fight against a Steelshape, although some abilities you develop may improve your berserk state to a significant degree.]
>>588390
[Good watch. My kind of violence. I don't think there'll be any Steelshapes quite as OP as Genocyber, since psionics are rare in this setting, but once we start getting higher in levels, buildings will definitely be getting knocked over.]

"Cooperate, and I'll let you survive. Be quick about your answers, because the longer I wait, the tastier you look." You say, licking your lips and drooling a little on his face. Ugh. You didn't actually intend to do that but it gets the point across and you think he pisses his pants again. He just nods and whimpers.

"Who is your employer? And what do you know about things like me?" You ask, and he recoils in horror as he gazes down the inner workings of your gullet.

"C-C-Cathode Group, sir! And I know nothing, sir! I-I was hired last week, sir!" The jittery PMC responds.

"Good to know. Was the building a setup? A corp like Goetia would have more security than just you goons." You ask in response, snarling to keep him on edge.

"No, sir! We were simply told to go in and contain an experimental cyborg! The building was evacuated earlier today in preparation, sir!" He responds, trying his best to sound composed but really coming off as more pathetic. You've heard about the Cathode Group before - they're bottom of the barrel but cheap. Someone with unknown funds like Goetia could probably afford to hire something more expensive. Cathode Group's usual buyers are people who own small private companies like a mom-and-pop store or the local GamePalace.

You grab Dan by the back of his shirt and quickly inform him that it'd be best not to scream too loud before kicking your window out of its hinges, watching it clatter to the street below, cracking but not shattering, like most glass these days does. Climbing down, your claws on one hand dig into the metal, denting it just enough that you can slowly drag yourself downward against gravity. You drop him on the ground.

"You take care now, Dan." You say, gently patting him on the head with your tail, and then wind up, leaping up as high as you can and ramming your claws through the wall to make a hole you can scale back up on before scuttling back into your apartment.

It's still grimy and dimly lit with fluttering lights from a landlord that didn't quite pay enough for his electricity payments. You see a couple of your old jackets hanging up, not like you'd probably be able to wear them now.

Your computers blip and boom at you soundlessly. You doubt you have the dexterity to go do anything complicated on it anymore, but if you felt like it you could try and go through some of your old files.

Coffee can wait, and even then, you don't know if your new circulatory system is capable of processing caffeine in a way that would make it useful for you to drink. Instead, you start going through files, emails, et cetera, trying to see if you still have information on who gave you the Goetia job...

But it's blank. Your correspondence showed that you were skeptical of taking on a job from an anonymous benefactor until they gave you a 65% down payment rather than the typical 50%. The room feels cold as one of Neo York's typical Nightstorms begins to roll in, rain starting to splatter onto your bed. They promised you the job was easy enough, you said 'okay, I'll take it', went and did recon for two weeks, and then did the job, bringing you up to the present.

You notice in your BankPrint account that you've received the 7000 credits promised, about half an hour ago, and then following up with the account that made the deposit declares it promptly deleted, all dead ends severed and burnt.

You set some coffee to brew as rainwater trickles into the apartment through the hole the window once stood. Energy drinks are still the drug of choice amongst most of the population, but crackers and hackers prefer coffee because it's cheaper pound for pound and synthiene supplements have their taste masked by how bitter coffee tends to be. You've never met a single cracker who's not drank theirs black.

The shower water is the same as it always is - high pressure, low temperature. You don't feel it that much, and your skin feels less sensitive to the familiar sensation of nearly painful water. You wash the blood and grime off of you and watch as it swirls into a muddy brown death spiral down the drain, before getting out, drying yourself off, and returning to the computer. Coffee brewed darker than the storm clouds roiling up above, just the way you take it. You guzzle straight from the pot, unconcerned about the temperature now that your mouth can't really feel the burn. Just as you thought, it swishes down into your stomach, begins to circulate for one or two pumps, and then disperses into your system, sinking into your muscles and doing absolutely nothing. There's a thunderclap in the distance - either someone just got hit by a car, or you're about to have a flooded apartment. Either way, you'd rather move fast.

You weren't much one for socializing, to be honest. You indulged your credits on holovids and the latest models of VR headsets, and digital companionship. You can still see your favorite simu-pelvis underneath the desk, useless now to you, since even your tail is too big to fit in it without probably cracking it in two.

You had about two friends. One was another cracker named Jezebel. Or, titled, anyway. She preferred to spend her time messing with group simulations for fun rather than for profit. You've never met her in real life, so you can leave that one bridge unburned.

Crackers disappear all the time. You probably won't be missed.

The other was your pal, who called himself Buddy. A fragile little thing, the IQ of a quarter-dollar, one of the many homeless dotting Neo York's streets. But you always passed him on the corner from the way back from the GamePalace, and always tossed him a spare chit, and he'd always give you the time of day. Nice guy. To be honest, you don't think you'll need to burn bridges with him either. He'll just forget.

Well... That was solemn. You suppose it's time to get a move on.

You keep their names in mind for later. Buddy always sits on the same corner, and you have this little part of the city memorized, so you can return at any time although he'd probably scream and try to attack you. And Jezebel, well, all you know is that she lives in the Northern Octant of the roughly circular Neo York, while you live in the Southwestern Octant, close to the middle of the slice.

You don't want anyone following you. You go to your computer and punch a hole in it with your tail, and then eat all your paper documents before crushing your BankPrint. You escape out the window just as the storm begins to roll through, raining enough that visibility itself becomes moderately difficult.

You climb up onto the roof. Long ago, people talked about this thing called "The Sun" - a great big ball of superheated plasma that hung around the sky, but even on a day where the clouds have a couple of holes in them, and the four layers overlap at just right so you can see up, all there is is a dark purple night, always and forever. The term "day" used to be used for when "The Sun" was out, but now it's just a unit of measure - 24 hours.

Still, the view of the encroaching storm is pretty beautiful. Everything's drenched in water, and the water slides down the drainage pipes and into the sewers like a water park for hamsters, to be recycled and spat back up into the atmosphere by the Empire Spire, Neo York's largest apartment/office complex, situated dead center of the city.

You figure the storm is headed in the right direction to flood your apartment. In the distance, you see people sitting on rooftops, wide umbrellas getting them only half-soaked as they smoke through packs of smokes. You hear the sounds of cars roaring, as black-fit large-wheeled PMC vehicles drive through the streets, the only vehicles allowed on them outside of the busses. Several of them stop by your apartment complex, and you see people from the same company that Dan worked for begin to emerge. Under the cover of the storm, you're nearly invisible, but you can tell something's going down as they pull out the grappling hook cannon and launch it into the space where your apartment once was.

You decide that the best course of action is to simply sit, wait, and watch to see what they do. The only one of the cars that stopped at your apartment window was one of a train of six, all of which are out of view but audible driving to other locales - it seems this one is alone. From what you remember, most PMCs outside of the most lavishly funded one use one standard issue transportation vehicle that seats 9, or 6 and a large device of some kind. From what you can tell, this is a six-seated one, as the grappling hook rams through the edge of the windowsill, knocked only slightly off-course, and embeds itself into the ceiling, shaking dust loose.

Six PMC goons, all dressed in the same identical outfits, grab the thick cable by the bottom, revealing that it is, in fact, two metal cables (or rather one looped around the hook). A winch inside the cannon begins to pull the top cable towards it and push the bottom cable away, sending the PMCs upward towards the windowsill, where they grab an edge and haul their way in, disappearing inside.

You can't hear anything from there in the din of the storm, but it seems that there's nobody left inside the vehicle (not that you know how to drive). If you wanted to make an escape, now would be a good time.

Grabbing the sides of the wall, you dig your way in and quickly creep to your apartment, watching as the cramped PMCs fan out the best they can and begin ransacking the place for information. You see a finger-shaped smudge in the black goop you left underneath the bed. Pressing yourself against the floor, you watch as the rest of the PMCs disappear into the hallway, with one slinking into the bathroom to examine it.

You hear muttered words over walkie-talkie, but the din of the storm disguises it.

With the door open from the inside, the water flooding your apartment is beginning to leak out into the hallway. You do hear, however, the sounds of doors being kicked open and gunshots firing. Yelling. Screaming.

Bullets fly over your head, one or two at a time.

The one examining your ruined computer is unawares.

You lurch forward, waiting until he turns around to face you, and spring up from the ground, slamming your horn through his chin and ripping out his lower jaw with it - he tries to make some kind of noise, but all that he can do is flap his tongue around and watch as blood pours from the gaping wound. Craning your neck forward, you snap your teeth in, almost opening your mouth up 180 degrees in order to dig out his trachea and scoop a nice big meaty hole. You crunch the man's clavicle between your teeth and let him bleed, gouging his eyes out and then breaking the tip of his gun so he can't retaliate before throwing him out the window head-first. You hear something crunch and look out to see him twitching on the ground, his neck clearly bent at the wrong angle.

"Avery down! Converge on the Sierra!" You hear from another room - you were planning on ripping the wall up to attract their attention, but considering that you're suddenly being riddled with bullets. They're probably a little higher caliber than the ones used before, considering you can feel tiny pinpricks of blood forming from very small cuts that they put in your skin as they bounce off, or otherwise they just tink off the metal harmlessly.

You crouch down back into the muck and slightly-bloodied water as semi-automatic fire rips through the drywall, sending dust everywhere. In between volleys, you hear the noises of footsteps converging, far more people than 6, and cars revving on the road, guns reloading, stepping, and orders being shouted.

You have the feeling you just got taunted into an ambush.

You mentally hum an ancient war hymn to yourself, dug up from the dregs of the internet, a piece entitled "Another One Bites the Dust". You feel it's appropriate, as you literally headbutt your way into the next apartment over, immediately fired upon by screaming, yelling PMCs. You're not interested in them, so instead of giving them a special death, you just grab their heads and literally slam them together so hard they crack. That probably severely concussed them both, so you do it again to ensure they die, mushing it into one big pillowy pile of balaclava and meat.

A crowd of four PMCs are standing at the door, two of them kneeling down and the other two with their guns over top, all of them wearing ear protection. They fire one gun at a time, keeping you constantly under fire, which, unfortunately for them, doesn't actually work. Especially when you grab the bed still covered in fresh gore from its previous occupant and throw it at them, the metal frame crushing the skulls of the two below and ripping apart the legs of the other two so they flop onto it. One of them attempts to continue firing while the other just starts dragging himself away.

No sympathy. You grab the runner by the neck with your tail and mash him into the ceiling, leaving his legless corpse sticking from it like a piƱata. The other one, you rip his gun away and then just slit his throat with two fingers.

The hallway is full of PMCs clearing out rooms, two or three soldiers at a time. It looks like they're not leaving a single apartment unchecked. Gunfire rings out all around you in a delirious symphony combined with the sound of rain and the slowly increasing amounts of water and blood on the nonporous floor. If your memory serves you correctly, there should be only 8 other apartments on this floor, so probably around 20 PMCs you'd wager, with more coming.

You sting a bit all over but you haven't really been injured yet. It's like being hit with a paintball.

As you continue to play your ancient battle hymn in your head, you proceed to ambush the PMCs in small groups, making sure to knock out whatever lights you can to minimize their visibility. Remaining out of view, you simply kill and maim as efficiently as possible. Amongst your list of kills are such achievements as:

-Ripping someone's heart out from their chest and then smashing it into their partner's face until they passed out from fear, then stepping on said partner's head.
-Just straight up kicking someone in the chest once, causing their entire upper torso to explosively rip out of their backside, bones included.
-Skewered through two heads at once with your tail, nibbling on them like a shish-kabob.
-Ramming someone's gun through their own head and then beating their companions to death with the first person's torn off arms.

You clear the floor efficiently and sadistically, as footsteps clear the way out. Nobody's coming upstairs, and the sound of gunfire is slowly coming to a halt.

If you had to guess, you'd say that it's because they've managed to kill everyone. They're probably cordoning off the area and then waiting for you outside.

Or, you thought that, until you got hit by a PMC Humvee going probably a hundred miles an hour.
