I sigh, burying my face in my mattress for a moment as she starts to struggle to try and pull me out of my bed again by grabbing me by my ankles.

I see Kotei's grinning face in the reflection for a second as I go to work carefully, slowly, even gingerly.

I hold the blade up to the light, and smile. Yeah that's a pretty good polish I got there, and I got the oil from my hands off of it with that.

I sheath it and put in on my shoulders as I walk over the doors, and throw it open. And there's Aya again, I step to the side to avoid her hugging me again

"I'll get you one of these times" She grumbles as she stands back up "So what class should we go to?"

It's been what 3 weeks in the academy and she has almost completed her basic Shinigami training.

I break out running as fast as I can, before she can answer me with more venom. Of course I'm not used to running without a sword in my hand, but I try to keep up pace as awkward and unnatural as it feels.

My chest burns and my legs feel like jelly, I look back and see the rest of the class as specks in the distance...but I didn't shunpo yet. I grit my teeth and shake my head as I pick up the pace.

I just need...to endure and I can do this. Its all about moving faster than the eye can see, and to that I need to keep breathing and running.

I look back and see Aya has somehow managed to catch up with me

I cut my urge to breath as fast as I'm running, and slow down each breath I take, stretching it as far as I can as I try to keep a steady speed, slowly increasing it to keep up with Aya's almost limitless youthful energy.

Sweat soaks my face as it pours down it, dripping onto my kosode as I struggle to keep pace with the little ball of energy, who doesn't have a drop on her. But the pain in my chest, and the burning in my legs starts to fade away like a passing tide as my competitive spirit spurns me to run faster, kicking me forward as I lower myself to run a bit faster, smiling and laughing happily as I somehow manage to keep up with my little bird.

"Come on!" She shouts, leaping over a stray rock as I step over the one in my way "You're starting to look like an angry old man"

Her heart skipped a beat as a burning cold chill wrapped around her. The world became black for a minute before the cloud moved past her. She caught herself, stomping her foot into the ground as the smoke flowed onwards, and without missing a step, the girl walked out of it, her body reforming as she made a rather rude gesture at the little old lady.

Who stood there in confusion, her mouth agape as she tried to peace together what the hell just happened.

You probably got confused by the references of hatman in YDFQ, but in the actual quest, that was never really a thing, more of a common joke because way early in the quest the protagonist requested to hug him as her "gift" (because she was a nice girl diplomancer).
It wasn't really romantic at all, though very sweet and cute.
But he wasn't a husbando so much as a really good friend.
(She was giving the sexy foxlady eyes for most of the time).

I can't say I felt that way, but it was a kitsune so honestly it was kinda .. you know how anons and some specific monsters are like. Predictable is the word, I guess.

I didn't feel like it didn't fit into the narrative or anything. Though personally I was more interested in the Marcus/Helga romance than Amelias own lovelife.

"Can you try to be quite for a bit, I need to think about this for a bit" I mumble as start walking towards the dorms "Which is kind of hard when I don't know anything about"

"Teeth teeth, weird teeth, beaver faaaace" Aya chants as she leans over my shoulder "You don't want to hang around a beaver face do you ?"

I growl and lower my head, trying to ignore her as she repeats herself over and over, chanting like some kind of drunk as I try and choose with the little I know about them as she continues to jab and poke my stomach, trying to annoy me enough to make me snap.

And guess what, it works.

"FINE!" I scream as smoke flows down my white sleeves "FINE, we'll go with the tenth, just please shut up"

"ehehe, knew that technique would work" She says teasingly as I stomp after her, following her to one of the three lines of students from later years, who've been here for longer than us and should know the ropes enough.

A few full soul reapers stand around them, joking with each other or grimly glaring down at my peers like prison wardens.

But I don't see a captain or a lieutenant. One of the students is a girl with midnight blue hair and a sword's guard covering her eye, and another is a big brawny man with a curling mustache and a very western looking hat...in fact I'm pretty sure he is a foreigner at least in life

I feel the same. There wasn't anyone in our party worth going after, maybe Marcus, but it probably weird having a bodyguard you've known since as a child becoming a romantic interest.

I turn, sliding Ryūketsu no kōtei from my shoulder as I instinctively turn to swing at what's ever is coming my way. I can't even blink before I see a pair of sandals aiming right for my face, as I swing up in the gap between them. Wait is that a captains coat....wait that IS A CAPTAIN'S COAT! And the second before his boots hit my head, I see his weird spiked up hair.

And then I feel myself getting thrown back as blood flies out of my nose and I hear an spine tingling "OOOOOOOOOOoooooh!" as he crumples down in pain.

Something slams into my back and I yelp in pain as blood flows down onto my lips as I hit the wall of the academy with a very loud crack.

"CAPTAIN SHIBA!" A few voice cry out as I stare blankly at the sky, trying to figure out what happened

"KIMI CHAN!" Aya screams as she comes running over to my side and shakes me "Are you okay Kimi chan...kimi chan...KIMI CHAAN!"

"I'm fine" I mummer as I stand back up shakily and see the captain on the floor, with his hands on his groin, and suddenly I feel a few glares before he hops back up, laughing as a single tear rolls down his cheek.

"I must admit" He says rubbing his chin as he looks down to hide his pain "I didn't expect you to actually have the reflexes to hit me during my surprise attack"

I stare at him blankly as he and the other soul reapers walk over to me as the students just kind of...well they give me a look that is some were between disdain and hatred, besides the one eyed girl and the westerner.

"Name's Isshin Shiba" He says holding out one hand, as the other cups his balls "Captain of the 10th division and head of one branch of the shiba clan, and you must be that Kemuri girl everyone's been talking about"

What do I do?
