For so long as there have been monsters, there have been those that have stood against them. Hunters, heroes, priests, and paragons, and sometimes just men and women with no other choice but to go howling back into the nascent dark that surrounds them.

Yet, darkness comes in many forms, lying within the heart and mind as often as within the physical eye of the beholder. When then does a hunter become a butcher? A saint, a destroyer of innocents? And most of all, who is fit to judge the guilty? These are questions too rarely asked and far too seldom answered.

Cici, however, is no philosopher. She is just a child, albeit one with fangs and serpentine lochs she’s presently trying her best to keep hidden beneath her hood. It’s no easy feat to keep a dozen slithering snakes stowed safely away, of course. Curious snouts nuzzle at her neck more insistently with each passing moment as they wonder what is going on outside, but because she knows the more ordinary girl she’s presently helping to her feet might be afraid if she saw them, she perseveres with her restraint. Maybe that was the real difference between a man and a monster come the end of the day…

“But wait a second, there aren’t any monsters around here,” Cici complains, the young gorgon blissfully unaware of the meta-narrative and instead fully focused on the grass-stained girl she had found playing monster hunter in her front yard.

“Are you crazy?!” the other girl demands, hurriedly brushing away detritus and mud before tiny fists find their way to her hips. “There’s ghosts and skellingtons and bears everywhere around here and…” Her voice drops into a conspiratorial whisper. “and even worse!”

Welcome to Gorgon Child Quest! Where-in you take up the role of a magical talking artifact being wielded by a young gorgon girl named Cici. Living out of the steadily improving remains of a once great dungeon, the game will focus on exploration, character interaction, and learning as the voices of the players within the amulet help guide her along. I may also include a magic system down the line depending on how things go, but we'll see what the future holds.

For news about quest updates, my twitter can be found here:

And the archive can presently be found here:

Skellingtons are cool, and I dont think we've ever seen a ghost around here, have we? That means there arent any, right? Right?
And there was just the one bear, and its...gone now, kind of.
What could possibly be soooo bad, huh?
He asks as if he doesnt already know.
>>
>>628862
But skellingtons aren't bad, I mean there's one inside each of you right now.
>>
>>628862
"Hey! Uncle Lee isn't a bad skellington! And neither are Steffan, Arnie, or Ben! Splodey is kinda weird, but that doesn't make him bad! And Vivian is staying here, too, and Mama already got rid of the bear and the vampires!"
>>
>>628862
How are they gonna hunt anything? they don't seem to have weapons and what if a true monster had found her instead of cici.
>>
>>628862

Yay I made it.

SKellingtons are nice. You can even have tea parties with them, don't listen to her

“Mama says we all have a skeleton inside of us…” Cici comments, afraid to ask about what’s worse. “An’ I don’t think there are any ghosts around here, either.”

At least she hopes not.

“You’re mom’s a weirdo, then,” the girl confirms, before beginning to walk away with a nod.

“Mama’s not weird!” Cici objects, trailing after her. “An’ Uncle Lee isn’t bad, either! Neither are Steffan, Arnie, or Ben! Splodey is kinda weird, but that doesn’t make him bad either!”

[Thanks voices.]

“Nope. They’re super weird,” the girl declares fatalistically. “Now pipe down, will ya? I’ve gotta make it to the tower over there.”

With a declarative finger, she points to the entryway in the distance.

“B-but why?” Cici asks in a whisper, bending down beside the girl.

“Cuz tha- Aaah!” With a yelp, the girl jumps away from the grave she’s hiding behind, Din-Din’s nose twitching curiously from where it brushed against her leg. “Oh, thank the gods! It’s just a bunny! Come here girl! Come here!”

“Din-Din’s a boy rabbit,” Cici corrects, the fluffy hare hopping casually past the girl in pursuit of his true owner. “Anyway, what were you saying?”

“Oh! Right!” the girl says, taking a deep breath and brushing at her leg. “Cuz that’ll show those jerks back in town, ‘specially Danny, that we aren’t so ‘fraidy cats.”

“I still don’t understand…”

“Of course you don’t! Just try to keep up!” With that the girl twists around the stone and goes sprinting for the door.
>>

“Ah! Careful or you’re gonna trip!” Cici warns, picking up Din-Din before running after the other girl.

Fortunately, she isn’t very fast on her feet, or to be more accurate, she’s running really strangely by Cici’s estimates. Darting from side to side of the isle and peeking out behind each rock before continuing, her stealthy exploits look almost comical from the back end as Cici follows at a modest pace with Din-Din in tow.

“Psst! Hannah!” comes a strained whisper from the side and up ahead, Kate’s footsteps falling heavy before she emerges and almost tackles her friend. “Found you!”

“Yeah, well she found me first,” Hannah points out, apparently still annoyed as she gestures back to Cici. “She helped me get down from a stupid statue when I got stuck.”

“Oh, it’s you!” Kate breathes. “You’re the girl who was on top of the tower!”

The other girl blanches at that.

“No way! What’s up there!” she demands.

“Umm…” Cici hesitates. “There’s a garden full of vegetables an’ fruits an’ flowers…”

“I want one!” Kate declares boldly.

“So do I!”

“B-but…” Cici starts to object. However, the other girls are already running toward the tower again, much faster than before.

>>628976
Mama could probably help them clean up, but she’s gonna be super mad if they pick her flowers without asking first. With that in mind, Cici picks her pace up a bit, all the while calling after the duo and trying to get them to stop. They were going to get in trouble and get her in trouble in the process.

However, as they rampage toward the tower, heedless of the shambling skeletons without, something else catches their eye. Something that makes them stop dead in their tracks.

“Mama!” Cici calls happily as her mother’s outline breaks clear into the morning light from the doorway, the trailing scales of her stomach and long serpentine body still partially hidden from view as she rubs the sleep from her eyes with one hand and her serpents let out a good morning hiss. “Mama, we h-“

But Cici doesn’t have a chance to say any more before two shrill, terrified shrieks pierce the air, the girls stumbling over one another as they simultaneously cling on to one another for dear life and attempt to turn and flee. The result is a ball of limbs hurtling in Cici’s direction without warning in a screaming blur, something hard colliding with the young girl’s chest as roughly half of that mass continues fleeing the cemetery at a break-neck pace.

That just left stars and Hannah in Cici’s vision, the latter spinning into focus as the former settled, the snakes now whipping about her head doing little to help her focus. The same could apparently be said of the other girl, as when Hannah catches a glance at Cici’s revealed scalp, she promptly pales and falls over, expression empty as she collides with the dirt.

Mama looks at you, confused.

Better tell your mother that the girls had come playing Monster Hunter.

Ugh. Kate is going to be an idiot and rile the villagers up again.
Or maybe they'll be properly chastized from the last time and NOT jump to conclusions.
On the plus side, maybe we can get the Father to break some heads at the village this time.

["I'm fine!"]
“I’m sorry, Mama…” Cici says quietly as she tries to stand up, her chest stiff but no doubt not as tight as Din-Din’s as the unfortunate middle ground of the collision attempts to shake off the blow, wobbling one leg curiously as he hops to safety. “They said they were playing Monster Hunter and then they wanted to pick your flowers, an’ I tried to ssstop them but-”

“Shhh…” coos the towering snake woman, resting a hand on Cici’s cheek. “Everything will be fine, sweetling. This was just a misunderstanding that we’ll have to correct. Now, have you had breakfast yet?”

“Mhm,” Cici nods. “An’ I got really far in my reading!”

“Really?” her mother questions adoringly. “And how far is that?”

On a beat, Cici is then off and up the tower, grabbing the book from where it lay before bringing it back downstairs.

“This far,” she says proudly, flipping through the section she covered earlier and holding it up for her mom to see.

“Wow,” her mother gasps, eyes widening. “And here you said you were no good at reading!”

“The voices helped!” Cici explains. “So, does that mean me and Vivi can go to town with you?”

“Well, I suppose a promise is a promise,” she sighs, casually scooping Cici up into her arms and giving her a hug. “Oof! When did you get so big, huh?”

Cici just hugs back and smiles. She was still so tiny compared to her mother that any talk of size seemed funny.

“Anyway,” the gorgoness sighs, placing her child back on the ground. “It’s best we get this girl-“

“Hannah,” Cici explains.

“Hannah, back to her own family, don’t you think?”

“Mhm!” Cici agrees enthusiastically, brushing off the grass and other things gathered on her cloak as she stuffs her hair back inside her hood.

>>629117

[“I’m sure she didn’t mean it! She was just surprised, like when Din-Din sniffed her leg!”]

Whatever the case may be, Mama wanders off to put on her own traveling clothes, leaving Cici with some time to spare. Figuring that she might be thirsty after all of that screaming, Cici goes to grab Hannah some water from the barrel, hearing the sound of soft murmuring coming from the girl when she comes back.

[“Good idea.”]

“Umm, Hannah?” Cici calls softly, keeping her distance. “Hannah, are you okay?”

“Please d-d-don’t eat me!” the tiny girl squeaks, covering her eyes with her hands.

“Huh?” Cici questions. “You aren’t food…”

“B-but you’re snakes!” she whimpers. “You’re snake p-people!”

“I don’t think snakes eat people either…”

“B-b-but… *hic*”

“Would you like some water?” she questions. “Or a hug? The voices say it’s a magical pantsy-a or something like that.”

“I j-just wanna go home!”

“Well, we’re gonna take you home in a little bit. Mama just has to get ready first.”

“Your mom’s s-scary,” the girl whispers.

“Huh? Why?”

“Cuz her hair is made of snakes and she’s huge!”

“And your hair’s made out of fluffy stuff and you’re small. Mice are scarier than snakes…”

“Are not…”

“Are too…”

“Are not!”

“Are too!”

“Children, children,” Mama says as she comes out of the tower with her robes on. “What are you arguing about, this early in the morning? Also, Hannah, I’m glad to see you are alright. Do you feel well?”

“I feel sick to my stomach,” the girl croaks, now sitting up, but not looking at the imposing snake. “And I wanna go home.”

“Well, a bit of water might help your stomach,” she says. “Cici appears to have gotten you some. Do you feel like you would like a drink?”

No words. She just nods.

Cici takes the cue and just hands her the cup, the girl’s hands shaking slightly as she grabs hold and carefully begins sipping on the cool liquid. Mama waits until she’s done before offering her hand to take it back, slithering back into the tower to return it to its rightful place before coming back outside.

“So, you want to go home, right?” Mama asks, getting another nod. “Then, I’ll carry you. You had a nasty spill. Otherwise, I’d let you walk on your own, okay?”

With another nod, she simply bends down and scoops up Hannah as effortlessly as Cici could have grabbed Din-Din, toting the child in her arms as she begins making her way toward town. Cici quickly follows suit, though as she stoops to call her rabbit, he is nowhere in sight.

So, I ran a quest before this, in which Cici and her family were introduced. A skeletal bard by the name of Lee woke up in their crypts and went on his own adventure, righting wrongs and seeking justice. In what ways I've been able, I've separated out how much foreknowledge the players would need to embrace this as it's own quest.

However, in certain instances, a couple of players who migrated from that quest may have had more time to puzzle things out or been given some information that hasn't necessarily been covered here yet. It shouldn't be anything major, and you shouldn't concern yourself with it too much.

As mentioned, the other quest is in the archives now, and on hiatus due to my schedule.

[“I guess if Din-Din is hiding, he might have gone back to bed. I just hope he didn’t get hurt from getting squished.”]

Still, she doesn’t want to be left behind as her mother continues down the path, and so Cici leaves it in good faith that he knows where to get help if he needs it. After all, Uncle Yesh wasn’t far away. And so, over gravel and grave, the gorgon family makes their way with their wary passenger, minding the cracks and crags as they make their way through the copse of trees on the far side. From there the road is quick to even out, smooth and well-kempt dirt roads springing from the earth as if by magic past the barrier where few were likely to tread.

For Cici in particular, it really was exciting. She’d never been this close to the human settlement before, nor been able to see it through the tree lines she’d just crossed. From a crowded cemetery to a near endless series of flattened fields, the sudden change is breathtaking, life and livestock springing up everywhere in shapes and sizes she’d never seen before, even in the lizard village.

“Moooo!” bays one such newfound creature, one she’d heard several times before but only now seen: four-legged and fat with funny splotches of black all over white fur.

It's so close to the fence that she can almost touch it...

>Cows usually stay together in groups called herds. One male, called a bull will usually have a number of cows in a herd as his harem. The cows usually give birth to one calf a year, though twins are also known to be born. The calves have long strong legs and can walk a few minutes after they are born, so they can follow the herd. Cows are usually herded by humans so they are a sign humans are living nearby.
>>
>>629376
>Bulls become fertile at about seven months of age. Their fertility is closely related to the size of their testicles, and one simple test of fertility is to measure the circumference of the scrotum: a young bull is likely to be fertile once this reaches 28 centimetres (11 in); that of a fully adult bull may be over 40 centimetres (16 in).

>Bulls have a fibro-elastic penis. Given the small amount of erectile tissue, there is little enlargement after erection. The penis is quite rigid when non-erect, and becomes even more rigid during erection. Protrusion is not affected much by erection, but more by relaxation of the retractor penis muscle and straightening of the sigmoid flexure. Bulls are occasionally affected by a condition known as "corkscrew penis".The penis of a mature bull is about 3–4 cm in diameter

Cici sighs as she walks past the cow, the bovine mooing a tantalizing farewell to her as she scurries after her mother’s back then past a number of other interesting things. Chickens, bunny coops, sheep, and farm hands in the field. She waves occasionally as she goes, many people’s eyes turning at the sight of an over 20 feet long snake woman trailing down the road with two small girls in tow.

Some wave back. Some scratch their heads or turn their eyes away nervously. At the least, no one tries to impede them in their travels as the shape of a nearby hamlet comes into focus. Larger buildings and market stalls coming within sight as Cici lets the sounds and smells in the air wash over her.

It really is like a different world unfurling before Cici’s eyes, the tranquil quiet of home replaced with a cavalcade of sounds and noises. People cry wears, dogs bay, and children laugh. All the while, mills turn and carts clatter, the occasional clink of coin changing hand ringing like a bell. It’s all so overwhelming and disorienting, yet one things among it all remains constant.

“Mama, can we get a sweet roll while we’re here,” Cici begs, tugging on her cloak as the warm, sugary smell unfairly plays at her nostrils.

“Well, so long as Hannah doesn’t have any objections, I can get one for you both to share on the rest of the way home. Does that sound good?”

“Yes ma’am…” comes the quiet ascent, all the agreement the snake woman needs before she’s ducking her head beneath the eaves of the local caterer’s shop.

“Well, then,” a rough, jovial voice follows. “Would you look at what we have here.”

Behind the counter lies a weather beaten man if ever there was one, skin tanned a deep bronze from too many days in the sun, hair white as winter snow, and lines of all manner and shape seemingly carved into his flesh that twist as he smiles over the pipe between his teeth. He casually throws the rag between his hands aside, flour showing beneath his fingernails as he places them square on the counter.

“And here I was thinking I wouldn’t see you for another month,” he chuckles. “Wasn’t expecting you’d be marching in with one of our rugrats either, though.”

“Hey! I’m not a rat!” Hannah objects.

“Well, what do ya call a tiny thing that never stops eating, is covered with hair, and gets into everything it’s not supposed to?” he questions. “Sounds like a rat to me.”

“Hmmph,” the girl fumes, sinking further into the crook of the older woman’s arm.

“And what have we here?” he grumbles, eyes turning to Cici’s form in the doorway. “Well, I’ll be! You finally brought the little one with you.”

“Guyus, this is my daughter, Cecelia,” she says. “Cecelia, this is Guyus.”

“Hello sir,” Cici says quietly, bowing slightly. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Ha,” the old man laughs, shifting his jaw slightly before removing his pipe and setting it aside. “Now here’s a polite one. You could learn a thing or two from her, you know, Hannah. Anyway-“ With a slight groan, the man stands upright and wanders over to a display case, fetching a couple of sweet rolls in a sack before returning to the counter. “I’m guessing you were here for more than just a word by the gleam in the little one’s eyes. Think this’ll do for the two?”

“Actually, I was just going to get the one…” Cici’s mother comments. “Just a little snack to tide them over before lunch.”

“Well, call it a snack now and a snack for on the way home,” the man insists.

“I suppose if you insist,” she sighs, fishing into a pouch at her side, but the man just snorts and waves her off.

“This one’s on the house.”

“No, I couldn’t possibly-“

“Oh, yes you could,” he corrects her. “Look at that scrawny little thing. A light breeze could knock her over.”

“She’s a healthy w-“

“Nah, kids should be fat. Keeps ‘em out of trouble, I say, and something tells me from the way Kate came back here still shrieking like a banshee that they’ve been causing you more than a ten pence worth of trouble.”

“We were playing Monster Hunter!” the girl insists.

“Aye. And just who’s the monster here, the woman and her daughter breaking breakfast in the morning at a respectable hour or the two mangy monkeys skulking around their front yard like bandits?”

The girl stops as she thinks that over.

“The world’s a big place,” the man says decisively, “and if you go around pointing sticks at everything that looks a might different than yourself, you’ll have a short, miserable life ahead of you. So, honestly, it’s on the house.”

[“He does seem nice.”]

>>629753

[“I think Mama will have to allow that.”]

[“She also says you shouldn’t touch people without permission…”]

“Anyway,” the man says. “You all get a move on before the market gets crazy. I’ve got a batch of dough that needs rolling.”

“Thanks Mr. Guyus!” Cici says enthusiastically, hesitating for a moment before running up and briefly hugging him about the waste.

“Now, now, get goin’ you little rascal,” he insists, patting Cici on the head as she lets go. “It’s no use trying to butter up a baker, and you have places to be!”

Still, the man’s smile betrays his amusement as Cici makes her way out the door, waving behind her as she follows her mom back out into the street. By that point, there’s already a fresh cloud of powder in the air, but he still manages to wave back with one flour stained hand as he resumes pounding against the mound of dough with a passion.

“He seemed nice, Mama.”

“Guyus is a good-hearted man,” she agrees. “And if you’re lucky, there will always be a few like him wherever you go. Now, hold my hand so you don’t get lost.”

Through the busy market square, the trio begin winding to and fro, Mama snaking her long body around horse carts and stalls as her length trails behind them. Still, this is by no means a large town, and it isn’t long before the cluster of houses is once more thinning out, becoming less businesses and more homesteads until the individual streets breakaway on the outskirts of town. All the while through the trip, Cici and Hannah munch happily at their sweet bread, letting the taste of butter and sugar fill them with that bubbly warmth.

“So you said you lived here?” Mama questions as she pulls in front of a singular house, but before she can even get an answer, an elderly pair are rushing out of the house.

“Oh my god, Hannah!” the woman cries, gently tugging her daughter into her arms and cradling her against her shoulder. “Thank the gods you’re safe! What have we told you about going near the graveyard!”

“But Mom!”

“No butts! You’re grounded for the next month!”

“B-but-“

“Thank you for not - erhrm, letting anything happen to our daughter,” the father chimes in. “Rest assured, we’ll keep her out of your *ehm* hair in the future. The other village children as well, if we can help it!”

“Umm, excuse me…” Cici hesitantly interjects. “When she isn’t grounded any more, can she still come and play? It gets lonely when no one visits.”

“Well, that is…” the woman begins nervously. “You live in a graveyard…”

“What’s a graveyard?” Cici asks.

“Oh my god!” the woman shouts, causing Cici to wheel backward. “Just what have you been teaching th-“

Something in Mama’s expression makes her stop and reconsider the words she is about to say, and subsequently decide they are not worth whatever they would unleash.

“What she means to say is,” the father interjects. “Perhaps your child could play here: where there are more children and adults for supervision!”

“Can I, Mama?” Cici pleads innocently. “I promise I’ll do extra reading.”

“We’ll see, sweetling. We’ll see.”

Stay polite, Cici.

The woman is a close-minded fool. I pity the man, and while I applaud his patience, I question his judgement of character considering the wife he chose.
And while you may have many playmates here in the human village, you will be the object of bullying. You will need to prepare your body and your heart for pain if you wish to chance friendship.

Maybe we should ask mama what the woman was on about later. But not right now, she seems to be upset - maybe we should ask her to sing us a song we like.

"A graveyard is where the dead are buried, usually so that they may be honored and remembered. The graves, places where specific corpses are buried, are typically marked by stone monuments."
>>
>>629929
"Additionally, pretty much everyone knows what a graveyard is; that is likely why the woman was startled. Graveyards are also associated with ghosts, skeletons, and the restless dead in general. They are regarded with superstition and avoided, regrettably."

Yeah, your stone garden grows from rotting corpses.

[Oh...]

Cici may not understand exactly what’s going on, but she knows enough to know when her Mama is upset. And having little else to offer in this situation, she simply opens up her arms and begins hugging her around the trunk, trying to convey some amount of comfort before things get worse. A long moment passes as her mom stands there on the edge of saying something else, taking in a deep breath, then another, until finally she lets it all out a long sigh, placing a hand on Cici’s head and ruffling her hair through the coat.

“It would be nice for you to have some friends closer to your own age, wouldn’t it?” she questions, getting a small nod in return. “Well, I guess we really will see then. Until then, the three of you take care, and please, don’t trouble yourselves over today’s events.”

Still a little tense, as she waves to the couple still standing stunned in their yard, Cici is waving to Hannah closer to the ground.

“We’ll visit again, soon,” she promises, "and tell Kate I said hi."

But that would have to wait for another day.

Vote it up, if you have a mind.

As for Cici's father, he did in fact have two pairs of legs. Cici doesn't know much more about him other than that. It came up in a discussion with her mom as to why they looked so different, which then lead to a question of whether Papa was ever coming home...

She's been wary of asking questions ever since.
