Welcome to Warlock Quest! This is my first attempt at a quest and it may end as a one-shot, but I hope you all enjoy it regardless! Dice will be rolled occasionally, at which point it will be a 1d100 at best of the first 3 to beat out an unspoken challenge rating. Critical rolls do not exist, but beware, as failing to hit the challenge rating may lead to some interesting side effects…

Now, let us begin!

You are Conrad Maximus Watkins, and today is a very special day. Today is the day that you finally turn 21. Under normal circumstances you would be out celebrating with friends and family, but this day in particular has been anything but normal.

As you stroll down the sidewalk, you can’t help but think back on the mysterious gift your auntie sent you in the mail this morning. What on earth could you do with such a thing? It’s hardly an appropriate or conventional gift. You sigh as you recall the…

A damn book, written in a language you can’t even read! Not that you would have read it if it were written in English anyway. Your crazy auntie was always trying to push weird fantasy books on you, and you’ve practically grown sick of it by now! Hmph.

As you continue your leisurely stroll, you can’t help but notice that your shadow in the afternoon sun is doing that weird thing again. You noticed it for the first time this morning in the soft dawn light. The edges seemed to waver and bend, like there was something swimming in the darkness. At first you thought it was your medication wearing off again, and maybe the hallucinations were coming back, but you had never seen anything like THIS before.
Sometimes you even imagine you can see another shape inside the shadow, almost like a…

Your shadow seems to writhe and squirm like a snake, twisting and flexing along the edges.

You’re absolutely sure that you had never seen anything like this before your medicine. It was almost like your shadow was coming to life, moving of its own accord.

Your walking and contemplation abruptly comes to an end as you find yourself standing outside of your house. Inside, you imagine it will be empty. You live with your mother and sister, but your mother is probably out working at the hospital and your sister could be God knows where.

You head inside and go straight to your room without even bothering to check if anyone is home. Sitting at your desk with your laptop, you decide you may as well at least figure out what the title of the dumb black book is. Of course, there’s nothing written on the front, just some strange looking scribbles.

Flipping open to the front page and pulling up trusty google translate on your laptop, you decipher the first few lines of texts. It’s something about the nature of the soul, some really weird hippy shit you bet. You’re about to put the book back down when you notice something strange…
(cont.)
>>
The shadows cast by your desk lamp are beginning to move, and not in the subdued way that your shadow was moving before. They’re practically livid, snaking their way across the desk, the displaced darkness causing everything to look odd and flat.

As the darkness slithers across your desk, it begins to seep into the book. The pages turn from white to jet black, and in the middle of the page you can see the snake-shape squirming about. A loud hiss graces your ears. You’re absolutely sure that your hallucinations have never hissed at you before.
“My my, so thisss is my partner?” a voice hisses from the book. “How very ssstrange. I sssense power within you, yes, but is it enough?”

The darkness begins to coalesce and rise from the pages. It takes the form of a long, slender serpent. Where the eyes should be, bright white lights pierce you to your very soul. From its mouth a forked tongue flicks into existence.

“I can give you many things ssstranger, but I want to know what it is you would ssseek. Tell me, what do you ssseek?”

This is dumb. You’ve been living with seeing things all of your life. Bad dreams and weird visions were a normalcy before your medicine. Strange sights of fire and darkness that would reduce you to a mess of tears and snot. But this? A talking snake? Is this really the best your brain can throw at you? You’re not having this shit.

“I ssseek a more normal aunt. Alssso power I guessss.” You hiss right back at the damn snake. What’s it going to do, bite you?

As your response registers you could swear you hear a deep chuckle, a kind of rumbling like the earth itself was laughing at you.

The snake rears up and begins to sway back and forth. You’re curious as to what will happen next. That curiosity is quickly replaced by shock and horror though as the serpent strikes.

You expect to be bit, but instead it launches itself down your open mouth. You feel a cold sensation settle in your stomach as the last of the snake disappears down your throat.

“Power isss relative. Would you desssire to be more powerful than your peersss? Or perhapsss more powerful than the Demonsss themsselvesss?”

The hissing comes from within your own head. You don’t particularly care how powerful you get; you just want some semblance of control in your life. And it’d be a great fucking start if you knew what was going on.

As you think, you can feel the coldness in your stomach surging forth. It races up your chest to your heart, and begins to spread down your limbs. You can tell something inside of you is changing, but you aren’t sure what.

“Asssk, and you sssshall receive…”

You barely register as your head hits the desk…
-----

You are standing in the middle of a misty forest. The trees surrounding you are tall and ancient, and the air is thick with the scent of burning wood. You glance about, trying to figure out your situation. Is this a dream? If it is, it feels awfully real. You’re beyond tired of this bullshit!

High above you, you can barely make out the shape of the full moon. In the distance you see the faint glow of a fire, and you hear the beating of drums.
You decide to…
>Head towards the fire
>Go deeper into the forest
>Sit in defiance
>Other…?

>Head toward the fire.

Defiance is boring and if we've been transported to a realistic fantasy world the dark is more dangerous, if a vidya fantasy world we'll just hit an invisible wall or something.

We're a knowledgeable, deceptive smartass, we've got a certain amount of genre-savy.
>>
>>708723
>>708683
I agree to head towards the fire, But I also wish to head cautiously towards it and take the precaution of filtering the fumes with our shirt by placing it in front of our nose and mouth. Doesn't hurt to be safe.
>>
>>708752
Agree on the caution. No running up and demanding "where am I?" from whoever made it.
>>
You pull your shirt up towards your mouth to filter out the smoke as you begin to make your way towards the fire. Even though it’s late fall and the leaves are gone from the trees, you don’t make a sound as you creep through the forest. The pounding of the drums becomes louder and louder as you approach the fire, shaking you to your very core.

The fire is situated in the middle of a large clearing. It’s a massive inferno, a great pile of logs stacked in some strange array. You can see too that there are people dancing around it, and on the very edge of the clearing are more people with massive drums. They thump out a rhythm and the dancers leap and sway in their own mesmerizing pattern. You watch from a distance for a bit, but something inside of you is being tugged towards the fire.

It’s irresistible.

You stumble forward into the clearing, past the men beating their large drums, past the dancers, right up to the edge of the flames. The people pay you no mind. It is almost as if you don’t even exist to them. The heat from the fire is intense, but as it begins to affect you the coldness returns once again to the pit of your stomach. The two forces struggle within you, chilling you and warming you in quick flashes. The roar of the fire begins to drown out all other sounds, and the beating of the drums fades until all you can hear is the thumping of your own heart.

The flames beckon, but the cold is almost familiar now…

Drawing up every last ounce of your willpower, you set your feet firmly and…

>Embrace the call of the flames!
>Embrace the coldness within you!

No.

The fire is enticing, but it isn’t enticing enough.

You stand strong against the inferno, and suddenly everything fades to black.

You’re alone in a void and darkness is all around you. It envelopes you, clinging to your skin like a gentle lover. Gone is the fire and the forest, the scent of burning wood and the beating of the drums. Everything is quiet and still.

You feel something slithering up your leg, coiling around the muscle and inching higher and higher. “You could have chosssen fire….” It’s the snake. It continues to coil around you, winding up your torso.

“You could have been great and terrible to behold, mighty in your sssplendor…”

Now the snake is hissing right into your ear.

“But inssstead you will be sssubtle. The unssseen force.”

The snake lets out one last hiss before the darkness begins to fade. You find yourself sitting at your desk, the black book opened to the first page and your laptop screen blinking itself into sleep mode.

You check your wrist watch. 11:23pm. That’s nearly six hours from when you got home!

You stretch a little and try to decide if you’re hungry or not, but all you can feel in your stomach is that cold sensation, like you just drank a pitcher of ice water. It’s an interesting feeling to say the least. Oh well. You have work tomorrow, so it’s probably best that you get some sleep after this long and strange day.

You’re about to head to bed when a thought suddenly hits you! You almost forgot to take your pills!

Maybe you should talk to your doctor about increasing the dosage? Perhaps then you won’t pass out and have weird dreams about snakes and fire. Of course, you could always just skip the pills all together. After all, this is different from before. You feel like you have some control over what’s happening this time. Maybe you could chance it…?

>Take your pills
>Don’t take your pills
>>
>>708951
Well, we had a whole dream about being bestowed magical powers, so I would try, almost jokingly, to freeze a glass of water with pur tought. Then, if we manage to, we won't take our medication (and maybe have someone else confirm our magical powers because, you know, we shouldn't trust our mind) if all of that don't work yeah, bluepill ourselves
>>
>>708974
Yeah the third path of actually trying to test our powers seems best here before deciding to take the meds. The psych meds are always whet they use to keep the psychic/magic powers down, so best to put it off until we're sure we're nuts.
>>
>>708951
I opt not to take the pills, The situation felt way too lucid unlike any previous hallucinations. But tomorrow before leaving for work, lets take the bottle just in case things get dire.

Provided our job has allocated space to keep the bottle, or have the pills in our pocket during work.
>>
>>708976
Yeah the pills will surely dump our powers, but we are roleplaying a slightly mentally ill person, so he should prove to himself that this is real and not yet another hallucination
>>
Fuck it. Let’s see how far down the rabbit hole goes, right?

You head to the bathroom and pour yourself a glass of water. Now, if your theory is correct and you have some sort of magic-y or psychic powers, you should be able to do something to this just on pure willpower alone.

You reach out to that pit in your stomach where the coldness resides and try to will it up. Slowly, you can feel it spreading throughout your limbs, and you swear the temperature in the room drops by a significant amount. You weren’t expecting the glass to freeze or anything, but the water is definitely colder than when you poured it.

Or maybe it isn’t. Maybe this is all a delusion. Granted, it’d be your most elaborate one yet, but this can’t be real, right? Shadow snakes and making water colder, that’s impossible stuff. But you’ve been sick for so long, you’re looking for an out. Anything to make things a little less dull. And it’s like you told the snake, you just want to be able to control some aspect of your life. Anything, even imagined, is better than nothing.

You decide to head to bed without taking your pills.
---

You awaken to an empty house. You guess your mom left for work early, and your sister is already in school by now. It’s 8:30am on a Friday. You have a little bit of time before you have to head to your mundane job as a stocker at the local grocery store. You look over to your desk and see that the black book is still sitting there with the pages open. Looking at it yesterday seemed to trigger whatever it was that happened, so maybe the book could hold some answers? Or you could always try more practical things, like seeing if you actually can lower the temperature in the room. Also, there’s always the option of ignoring everything for now and getting adequately ready for work.

You decide to…

>Study the Black Book
>Practice (Chilling Aura)
>Get ready for work
>Other…?
>>
>>709041
Practice makes perfect.

I think we should still be getting ready just in case. Even if we're a human refrigerator that's not useful enough to quit our day job. But we can try freezing our orange juice over breakfast and take a cup of water with us to work to practice on, that sort of thing. Just practice as we go about our day.

If it works, we totally need to rewatch Batman & Robin and practice our Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze impression though.
>>
>>709041
I think skimming the book for any greek/latin/roman words relating to ice would be a smart idea, If we find something related to ice in the book I think we should study it. If there's nothing but blank pages or mumbo jumbo then let's practice, but keep the practice simple until we know whether or not we have accrued some mystical power.
>>
>>709041
How are we going to work? If we take a bus we may be able to read while going, if we have a car maybe just sneak a peek and practice chilling aura while driving. Let's hope that shit doesn't make us black out. And as another anon said, bring the pills with us. MULTITASK PEOPLE!
>>
>>709068
You live in a fairly rural town. You'll be taking your car to work.
>>
>>709065
I agree with >>709060

Get ready first just in case we lose track of time whether we practice or study.
>>
>>709068
That's a good argument for taking the bus even if we have a car, if we black out from exertion it's much more dangerous in the car, and we can bring both the pills and book to work on the bus and get everything done.

So I guess I vote
>Other: All of the above. And let's take the bus.
>>
>>709078
>>709071
Sorry QM, I was too slow.

Well, no bus but I still like my vote for bringing the pills and book with us to work and maybe practicing freezing a cup of water VERY CAUTIOUSLY while driving.
>>
>>709078
I second (maybe third, depending on who replies first)
>>
>>709078
See>>709071
So, unfortunately no bus. I feared the book may talk or knock us out.
>>
>>709083
>>709093

This sounds a tad crazy, but what about driving with the car's a/c on heat and trying to remain cool while driving? We can keep focus on the road and both hands on the wheel while on our way to work.
>>
Practice makes perfect, right? So why not practice? You head to the kitchen and pour yourself a glass of orange juice, making sure to gauge how cold it is coming out of the fridge. As you concentrate, you can feel your chilling aura start to affect the beverage. As cold as it already was, you can see small bits of frost forming on the edge of the glass. Neat.

After downing some breakfast (frosty orange juice included) you put on your uniform, a pair of khaki cargo pants and your standard polo shirt, and prepare to head off to work. Before you head out the door though you grab your pill bottle. Best to have them on hand in case shit starts to hit the fan.

You’re almost out the door when the thought occurs to you that maybe you could take the book to work with you. Perhaps you could read it on break or something? Not that it would do you much good since you would have to translate it there too, but you never know. Of course, there’s always the chance of some weird shit happening again…

>Take the book
>Leave the book
>>
>>709101
makes this >>709099 moot, with the orange juice test. (Unless it will help hone our powers)

QM, can we feel any type of aura coming off the book?
>>
>>709101
Nah, I prefer to smoke a cig in my break instead of translating an ancient Latin book bounded with a snake spirit. So, let's do the genius >>709099 a/c thing, let's call our crazy ass aunt, and let's earn some money
>>
>>709112
You feel nothing coming from the book except for the natural aura of curiosity.
>>
>>709101
>Take the book.

And I agree with >>709114 that we should try the a/c thing suggested above and also call our aunt at some point.

We didn't actually have to read much Latin last night to get something out of the book though, some maybe the snake will help, or maybe it has illustrations worth looking at.
>>
>>709118
I agree with taking the book but leaving it in the car while we work. After work, perhaps we could go to the library and look for any books that are similar in nature to the mysterious book. Maybe check out the folklore/historical sections
>>
>>709140
We could also buy a latin vocabulary, once you learn declinations it's not so hard to translate latin
>>
You decide to snag the book and leave it in your car. Maybe after work you can take it by the library and see what you can find out about it.

On your way to work, you practice your chilling aura some more. You don’t have anything in particular to test it with, but you’re sure that the inside of your crappy little Nisan is getting colder and colder. You continue to stress test your abilities, noticing that the more you project the coldness into the air around you, the less you seem to have in your own body. Also, you might be getting muscle cramps from flexing and trying to force the cold around certain parts of your body. It occurs to you that you might try to call your aunt and ask her about everything that’s happened, but when you dial her number you don’t get an answer.

When you get to work and head through the doors, you’re greeted by Tyrus, the other stocking boy. He’s a huge dude, must be about 6’7 and as wide as he is tall. His voice is surprisingly high and whiny for someone of his stature.

“Hey man, what’s good?” he asks.

“Nothing much,” you reply. You’ve never been the conversational type, especially not with your coworkers.

You go about the motions of your job, putting things on shelves and keeping the store looking nice, and before you know it it’s already time for your state mandated break. Tyrus has stepped outside to smoke a cigarette, and the black book is still sitting in your car. You have about half an hour to look over it if you want. Or you could try to socialize with your coworker.

Of course, then another thought strikes you. You could test out your new power on Tyrus, see how that goes. If you can get some sort of reaction out of him, it’ll confirm that you’re not just crazy.

>Go smoke a cigarette
>Study the black book
>Practice on Tyrus (Chilling Aura)
>Other…?
>>
>>709184
If we're going to test out potentially weak powers as a weapon, a ginormous coworker seems like a terrible place to start.

Let's just read the book (or look at the pretty pictures/calligraphy)
>>
>>709184
Let's just try to unlit his cig while making conversation, I don't like to be that antisocial
>>
>>709181
We don't even need to buy it if we do end up going to the library. Providing the work day goes relatively normal.

>>709184
I personally don't think its wise to study the black book too deeply in public, in fear of blacking out (we can browse it in our car, but just stay alert and ready to divert if anybody is curious about our actions). And practicing on Tyrus would be risky, we don't know how cold we can make something provided we have gained some type of resistance to the cold.

I think >>709191 this is the way to go, Just glance at some photos in the book and see if we can feel a click with something and use that (if anything clicks) as a jump on point for research. Since we have the option to smoke a cigarette too lets do that, if we're addicted to nicotine then lets give our body what it craves so we don't feel any withdrawal while were still in a state of learning our power.

Blow, Blow, Thou Winter Wind - Poem by William Shakespeare

Blow, blow, thou winter wind
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.

Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship if feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then heigh-ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.

Freeze, freeze thou bitter sky,
That does not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot:
Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
As a friend remembered not.
Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then heigh-ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.

You decide to head out to your car and check up on the book.

As you open the pages you can’t help but feel a little uneasy. After all, last time you did this you ended up blacking out and having some weird ass dreams.

As expected, the words are mostly in Latin and Greek, but it looks like there are little handwritten notes in French here and there. You thumb idly through the pages until you come across a large medieval illustration. In it, a man holds his palms outward at either side of his body. Strange etchings are on the palms, and one hand is radiating a white light while the other is swathed in blackness. There are notes at the bottom in English.

>”The hand that heals shall not be the hand that rots, but also they shall be together as one within the host. Erase the sigils to release the flow.”

Hmm. You wonder what that could mean. You pull a receipt out of your glove box and bookmark the page for further investigation.

You still have about half of your break left. You can…

You decide that you’ve been giving Tyrus the cold shoulder for long enough. Maybe it’s time for you to try and break the ice.

You walk up to the bench that Tyrus is barely sitting on with his massive girth and take a seat. He wordlessly offers you a cigarette, which you accept and light without further ado.

“So, how’s life been?” You ask. It’s not the best way to start a conversation, but you don’t exactly have a way with words.

“Things been alright I guess,” Tyrus replies, “Got this bad ass spider bite on my thigh last week, I think the shit’s infected. You wanna see? I got pictures!”

You shudder and focus on the lit cigarette hanging from his mouth. Maybe if you concentrate, you can make it go out. You focus and….

You focus….

And focus….

And focus some more….

“Man, you look like you’re trying to take a shit. You okay?”

Tyrus’s words snap you out of your intense focusing. You could feel the coldness in your stomach trying to stretch outward, but there just wasn’t enough there. You probably spent too much energy practicing earlier.

You and Tyrus finish your cigarettes, and then get back to work. After a long and uneventful shift, you’re finally free. It’s currently 5:00pm on a Friday. Your sister should be home from school by now, and your mom might be back in as well. You could always try calling your aunt again, see if you can get any answers from her. Also, the library is literally just across the street if you want to study the black book. There are also a few secluded parks in town that you could go practice your chilling aura in.

You decide to head to the library before they close and study up on the black book some. Not that you expect to find many things of use in the little public library, but you’ve got to start somewhere, right?

Walking through the small front door of the library rings a little bell, alerting the librarian to your presence.

She’s a small woman who can’t be too much older than you, which is strange because you swear you’ve never seen her before. The name tag on her shirt says ‘Sarah’. She has short, brown hair and wears thick glasses.

“Need help finding anything sir?” she asks.

You reply, “Now that you mention it, do you have anything on…”

Latin translation guides. I figure that since the book is mainly Latin this should be our first priority. Maybe also keep a low key eye on Sarah to watch for anything suspect form her since we don't seem to recognize her from anywhere.

“Now that you mention it, do you have any Latin translation guides around here?”

Sarah blinks for a second before scurrying off into the library. When she returns, she has in her hands a big Latin to English dictionary.

“Will something like this work?” she asks.

“Yeah, it should”

You take the dictionary and head over to a table. The whole library is unoccupied, not surprising considering that most of this town is barely even literate. You occasionally hear Sarah walking around or clacking away on her keyboard, but for the most part you’re absorbed in your studies.

---

After an hour of studying, you’ve managed to decipher a little more from the book. Apparently the commentary on the nature of souls at the beginning is a theme that is spread throughout the entire book. The title of the book has something to do with souls and nighttime. You even went back to the page that you bookmarked and translated what the surrounding text says. Apparently it contains instructions on how to use a sigil to heal or harm someone. You could study the bookmarked page until the library closes in an hour, or you could take your chances and see what else the book has to offer you. Or, you could go study something else.

I have studied no latin, but I've always had an interest in languages and the occult. I'm doing some research in the background, but a lot of this is just head canon. I'll try to make things as proper as I can and still be able to fit within the universe I'm creating.

You decide to spend the next hour focusing on the illustration you found earlier. It appears that the sigils represent basic concepts such as “growth” or “decay”. Not only that, but there is a compendium of different sigils listed a few pages over! Your translating abilities seem to be progressing, because in no time flat you have the writings around the large illustration completely translated.

According to the instructions, sigil magic works by imparting a bit of one’s own soul into the sigil, and then releasing the energy to achieve the desired effect. The actual sigil itself acts as a sort of conduit between your soul energy and the material world. In practice this means that if you inscribe the sigil of “growth” onto your hand, when you release the energy the sigil will give off an affect somehow related to “growth”.

The illustration shows two sigils, those for Growth and Decay, inscribed upon the palms. You don’t think you have time to practice both of them, but you can certainly see what inscribing one of them on something does.

As interesting as decay might be, you settle on learning the growth sigil instead.

You quickly grab a pen and etch out the sigil onto your left palm. As you’re doing so, you try to let the coldness you felt in your stomach flow upwards and through your fingertips. You can feel that chilling aura welling up, but instead of dispersing around you like it has before, it runs down your arm and through your pen. The sigil begins to glow with a faint purple light.

When you complete the drawing, you flex your hand to make sure that the ink doesn’t smear or run off. Alright, now it’s time to test this out! The book says that the growth sigil can do many things, from healing to causing sickness within someone. You don’t necessarily want to make yourself sick, so you settle on trying to heal an old scar you have on your ankle from when you were younger.

You place your left palm against the scar and focus, feeling the energy inside of the sigil swirling around. You nudge a little bit with your mind, and something begins to click. You can feel the sigils power in the back of your head like a tight cord. All you have to do is find the willpower to cut it.

There’s a bright flash of purple, and a sharp, cold sensation lights up your old scar. When you remove your hand, the sigil is gone, but the scar remains. It looks a little thinner, possibly less ropey, but you can’t be certain if your magic actually worked.

“Excuse me, are you taking pictures over there?” Sarah’s voice calls out from the other side of the room.

“Uh, yeah.” You respond, “Just getting some notes. I guess I left my flash on.” You give an awkward chuckle, and this seems to satisfy the librarian.

“You know the library closes in ten minutes, right?” she says.

“Oh, right. Well, I’ll be checking out this dictionary, if that’s okay?”

“Sure thing.” She replies.

You proceed up to the front desk and check out your book.

As you walk along the street back to your car, you can’t help but notice how strange it is that your shadow hasn’t twitched at all today. In fact, it’s almost like your little snake friend has abandoned you completely. Maybe when you get home you can check the book for information about shadow snakes?

--

You arrive home, walking through the door and stopping just long enough to tell you mother hello. She seems occupied with watching TV anyway. After grabbing a quick bite to eat, you head back to your room. You place the black book on your desk and sit back in your chair. There’s so much you don’t know about what’s going on, and you need some answers. Maybe further study of the book will provide you with some sort of clue? Or you could try calling Auntie Crystal again. Then again, the entire internet is at your fingertips, so why not utilize that resource as well?

You pick up your phone and dial up your aunt. It’s time the two of you had a little chat.

The phone rings for what feels like forever, until finally someone picks up on the other end.

“Hello? Connor?”

“Hey Crystal, how’re things?” you reply. It’s been a while since you’ve talked to your aunt in earnest.

“Oh, everything is going wonderfully! Did you get the birthday package I sent you?” her voice is eager and light, with a sort of singsong quality that really bugs you sometimes. It’s almost like everything she says is in a mocking tone.

“Yeah, about that. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about snakes and shadows, would you?”

The line goes quiet for a solid bit, and in the background you can hear something being shuffled around.

“Oh dearie, have you been off your medication lately? You know if you keep that up I’ll have to tell your mother~!”

You’re getting agitated. You know she knows something. She’s always been into this weird occult stuff, and NOW she decides to withhold information? As your anger rises you feel the coldness in your stomach begin to expand and seep into your limbs.

“Listen Crystal, I know you know. Now can you please tell me what exactly is going on?”

Again, the line goes quiet.

“Maybe,” she begins slowly, “You can come down to Indianapolis tomorrow. You’re only a little over an hour away, and it’ll be easier to show you than to tell you.”

That’s hardly a satisfying answer, but at least you’ve got leads now.

“I’ll consider it.” You reply.

Now that you’ve got some answers on the way, you feel much more comfortable. It’s still pretty early in the night, and you don’t have work tomorrow. You decide to focus the rest of your night on

You decide to really go to town on the book.

Armed with your new Latin dictionary and the power of the internet, you begin to translate at incredible rate. Sometimes it even seems as if the letters are bending into more recognizable patterns of their own accord. You skip over the preliminary stuff at the front of the book, and get right to the meat of Sigilcrafting. With an intensity that borders on madness you meticulously copy a new sigil onto a blank sheet of paper. This one is the sigil for “Binding”. The description alludes to being able to capture spirits and demons and keep them prisoner within an object.

Spirits and demons? That might be worth looking in to as well! You flip through the Nocta Anima until you reach the near back. Located there is a list of spirits and demons along with long, complex names. There are even instructions on how to preform rituals to summon them to carry out simple tasks for you. This is definitely some interesting stuff!

After thoroughly studying the Nocta Anima, you start to get fatigued. Your eyes are beginning to strain and you feel tired. Maybe you should hit the hay early tonight.

You climb into your bed and shut your eyes, and darkness quickly envelops you.

You’re back in the void, surrounded by the comforting shadows. You can hear snakes hissing all around you, though you don’t feel afraid. You almost feel that, given enough time, you could learn to interpret what the hissing means. Slowly, the coldness in your stomach spreads throughout your body until you feel like one giant icicle. It’s not an unpleasant feeling.

The voice of the snake whispers into your ear.

“You are learning fassst. Thisss isss good.”

You turn your head but can see only darkness.

“What exactly are you?” You shout into the void.

“I am Python, guardian of the knowledge of the deep.” The voice that answers you belongs to the serpent, yet as it speaks the void itself begins to shake and tremble. “I have chosssen you, Maximusss, to become my agent.”

The serpent uses your middle name. You find that curious, but push the thought to the back of your mind.

“You ssseek control, and power. I can offer you both, and knowledge of the deep places of the earth…”

The void begins to constrict, the darkness transitioning from a gentle caress to a crushing grip.

“But if you crossss me, you ssshall perish.”

You gulp, but no air enters your lungs.

“Ssserve me, and become my champion. I will grant you that which you ssseek. All that I asssk of you is to consssume the knowledge of the world. Devour it, and return it to me.”

The grip on your body loosens, and you feel yourself falling.

It’s early Saturday morning. Your watch says 7:30am. You’re supposed to visit your Aunt in Indianapolis today to get some answers, and after last night you definitely have some more questions! You could spend the morning studying the book some more, or you could practice the things you already know. You have plenty of time though before you have to leave. What do you do?

>Study the Nocta Anima (Sigilcraft)

Let's practice Invocation. Specifically to commune with spirits rather than demons.

Perhaps if we make contact with a spirit we can learn more about the void we fall into. If we can make contact let's keep questions simple and don't mention Python, I don't think its wise to delve too far into him just yet.

You crack open the Nocta Anima and flip to the back where all of the information about Invocation is. Lists of names and descriptions of all sorts of spirits and demons line the pages. You find a passage about communing with the spirits of the deceased, and begin to take notes. Apparently the act of Communion requires a few ingredients, specifically a candle placed on top of a sigil of binding.

>You have gained the ability of Communion

You still have plenty of time left before you need to leave for Auntie Crystal’s. You think you could find the right ingredients to do the communion ritual in that time, but it’ll prevent you from being able to study any more before leaving.
