Super Spooky Edition

>This is a participation-driven, slice-of-life quest with bits of action and romance thrown in for spice. The protagonist, Jacky Richmond, is a recently-returned veteran with little to call his own now that he’s back home. His grandfather, Roger Richmond, has recently passed away due to illness and left the family home and farm to Jacky. Per the terms of Roger’s will, Jacky must inhabit and work on the farm for two years before he legally owns it.

>LAST TIME: Farming, festival talk, Shrine visits with bears, discovered the Main Quest, visits with Alice at your place and hers, bad news at the beach, and Jacky is once again a hero.

>Criticisms, cheers, complaints, ideas, and ramblings are always welcome; let’s have fun and enjoy the next two years together!

>Evening, Tuesday Spring 3, Year 1

Jacky Richmond sits at the front porch of the Richmond family home, a place he can proudly call his own for at least the next two years. He watches the last soft rays of day dance over the fields, alight on the old tin roof of the shed, and spill over the old oak trees that dance to the south. He runs a hand over his face; the memories of the day spill through his mind like some wonderful flood.

Life is so much busier, colorful, and intense, now. His life is full - of people, places, things, hopes. There is so much to discover.

But that can wait until tomorrow. Today? Today, Jacky Richmond is done for now and ready for some well-deserved sleep after some well-deserved dinner. Everything else will come in time.

>>>>

>You are Jacky Richmond. You are a farmer, and you are tired - but that's because you had a full, fulfilling day.

Lying in your new bed, in your new room, that's an exercise in embracing the quiet peace of this new life. The stars provide a slight light through the nearby window, and your phone sits and charges against the wall while also emitting a faint light. Otherwise? It's just you and the silent dark. It's going to take a bit of getting used to - you've never been the biggest fan of silence since the war.

Your phone buzzes.

(Jacky!) Reads the text from your friend Chris. (HRU doing? Everything OK? RU a farmer yet? Cheers)

You holed up at Chris's place for part of your "lost" year and a half. He always tried to get you to a better place, but he never overtly complained about you drifting. He's a good guy.

A minute passed after the phone buzzed while you debated getting out of bed. Figuring it could be something important you guilted yourself into moving in a sort of half-slide and half-stretch towards the phone and with the least amount of grace possible you manage you swear and claw the damned thing into your hands and back onto the bed. The harsh LED light stings your eyes.

(Grste) You type out, your thumbs like those of a drunk man. A few taps on the DELETE button fix that. (Great. All the single women are crazy and I planted some turnips. Still getting used to it HBU?)

Chris asks for a picture of your turnips and pictures of the women. You accuse him of being a pervert; what kind of man asks for pictures of turnips? A few jokes later and Chris has texted you that he’s (Glad UR good. Wish U here to hit the Fed)

Some shy, beautiful girl you had never met sucker punched you out of nowhere. You never got much of an explanation out of her other than that she thought you were “someone else” and that she was “really sorry!” For some reason you sort-of apologized for yourself after she seemed so embarrassed and regretful, which is stupid because you didn't do anything wrong.

You sort of remember her saying something about an ex-boyfriend and trying to hit on her for a while. You were not successful, if memory serves you correct, but she did buy you a couple drinks. You text Chris and ask him about it.

(Hot girl?) He asks. (U had a black eye for a week. Didn’t she say u were her cousin?? IDK I was drunk.)

Figures. At least none of the girls in town have outright punched you, yet. You still have that going for you.

You fall asleep while contemplating which of the Sunnyvale girls would be scariest in a bare-knuckle brawl. A strange, small part of your half-asleep mind conjures up an image of Gwen with bear arms as you drift into the darkness of sleep…

>6:30 AM, Wednesday, Spring 4, Year 1

You wake a bit later than usual and something seems… off. Oh, right. Tara isn’t banging on the door like a lunatic. Is she running late? Maybe she didn’t stop by today.

The dull “pitter” and “patter” of the rain doesn’t fully catch your attention until you’re halfway done brushing your teeth. The rain means you won’t have to brush your teeth, fortunately, but you’ll have to take care working in the freezing rain when it’s like this. You’re liable to be worn out more easily and maybe even catch a cold.

You idly think about what it was like when it rained in the city. Nothing changed for all the other people that bustled about, went to work, and lived their lives. You, though? You always seemed to stay at home when it rained and just watch it from somebody’s couch. The rain in Korea sucked; the rain in China sucked, too. Nothing good ever seemed to come while it was raining.

But… That’s in the past, now. You swallow your past, and your oatmeal, and then wash it away with some fresh coffee. You idly wonder on whether or not your raincoat is in your luggage.

>>>>

Your raincoat was packed away, fortunately. Slightly protected from the chilling Spring storm. You trudge out onto your front porch and, to your great surprise, you spy a sleek black cat pawing at a mesh bag at the foot of the stairs. Its ears swivel as your step onto the creaky wooden flooring and its head snaps to attention. It eyes you warily and takes a step back.

Seems to be a mesh bag full of stuff from the beach, like shells, and you remember Lia giving you such a bag yesterday before you were forced to leave it behind in your rush. The cat must want it because it smells fishy…

It is beyond your means to resist smiling at the image of a tiny cat stuck in the rain. You bend down and try to beckon it over, cooing softly and clicking your tongue against your teeth. The cat cocks its head side to side a few times but, unfortunately, remains distant and tense.

Time to bring out the big guns.

Armed with milk and a ceramic saucer you go to battle. What cat can resist some nice, cold milk? Your visitor cannot, it seems, and watches with great interest as you elegantly pour with all your might. It takes a few cautious steps up the flight of stairs and then, gaining confidence in the idea that you won’t attack, leaps up the remaining steps. With a few more short bounds it closes the distance to the bowl and begins lapping at the milk earnestly.

You watch with a bit of pride and happiness as it laps away happily. You do notice that the poor cat is shivering; you can’t have that, can you? Jacky Richmond, heroic paragon of justice, cannot sit idly by as a cat suffers like this!

You fetch a warm towel and sort of place it around the cat. She doesn’t seem too peeved - moreso she actually nestles against the welcoming fabric and encourages you to dry her off. You hope that you’re making a friend; also, she probably doesn’t have rabies… right?

>>>>

With the cat as dry as you’re going to get it you fetch the mesh bag. It’s full of various odds and ends you’d find on the beach: nice, large shells; urchins; starfish; some polished glass…

It’s not junk by any means; it’s actually pretty nice and you can imagine something like the urchin and starfish could be sold.

While admiring the contents of your diving bag you spot the “in-coming” flag on your mailbox standing high. It seems you have mail! You step and puddle-hop your way down the waterlogged path…

For now you decide to stow away the shells and such in your house. Someone around town might like a few shells as a gift, and someone like Daniel could probably cook with the urchin.

With that done your attention turns to the cat once more, fingers brushing along her back as she finishes the last of the milk. “Now, what are we going to do with you? You shouldn’t stay out here in the rain, so why not stay inside for a bit?”

The cat looks up at you and regards you for a moment quietly. Then, with a quick yet gentle movement it rears up towards you and nuzzles against your neck. You laugh and return the favor with a few more brush strokes down her back.

“Is that a yes?” You ask, cognizant of the fact that cats can’t actually understand you… But then she shakes her head as if to communicate “no, I can’t stay here.” You think that’s what she’s doing, at least.

The cat then turns away and heads down the stairs (to your slight disappointment) and into the rain. You wave goodbye. You have a feeling you’ll see her around again.

>>>>

The hike to the Lodge certainly does take a while. The rain sucks; feeling it seep into your boots sucks even more.

“Ah well,” you sigh, the brisk wind of the mountainside whipping at your jacket and chilling your bones, “Hopefully Jamie’s got some towels or something. Maybe even the fire going, yeah...”

A few knocks at that grand and sturdy wooden door and Jamie is facing you once more. She’s wearing an eyepatch this time and you’re not sure if it suits her or not; the eyepatch doesn’t look bad, though. Otherwise, Jamie looks like she just got up if her blueberry-print pajamas are anything to go by.

“Mmmhph-hrm-hrm?” She mumbles. You ask her to repeat the question and she forces herself awake with a few quick slaps to the cheeks. “Jacky Richmond? I did not expect you to come so soon. Please, come inside.”

You follow her in and, with her assistance, take off your and hang up your coat.

“How are you? I assume you received my letter? Will you be staying? I can warm up some tea and raise the fire.”

“Yes, I got your letter, and-

“- and I’ll be here for a while, sure. Thank you.”

“Of course. I must be a polite host , yes?” And, true to her words, she leads you to the sitting room and offers you a seat. You reject her offer, though: you're still pretty wet “Ah! Allow me to get you a towel! And the fire, the fire will help...”

You resist ogling too much at Jamie’s backside as she bends over the fireplace and works on reviving the smoldering embers.

“Now, about my letter...” She mutters as she fans the flames. “The Blink tablet here relit yesterday. It had apparently been dormant for decades. This is great news.”

A Blink tablet, through the power of magic, can operate as part of a local teleportation network. It’s as useful as an elevator but significantly faster and safer. This really is exciting news.

The fire once again roaring, Jamie looks up at you as she brushes a bit of soot off her chest. “Miraculous, no? It is as if the Goddess wishes our quest to be a success.”

“The Goddess…” You think to yourself aloud. “Actually, you might be closer than you think. The local shrine came back yesterday, after all. The priestess said the Goddess hasn’t been present there for a really long time, too.”

Jamie nods excitedly. “Is that so? Then the Spirit of the Lady is returning to the Land. How did you learn of this shrine being awoken, though? Actually, wait on that. Allow me to dress myself and fix us something to drink while you dry yourself.”

>>>>

Both of you significantly more comfortable, you now weave a short tale for Jamie on your past couple days. She enjoys the stories and details quite a bit. Perhaps it is because she doesn’t get out much?

“And then,” Jamie whispers from behind her steaming mug of tea, “You held the bear in a hug, you say?”

You wave down her amazement. “It was because of the spell, but yeah. Anyways, Gwen would probably know something about the tablet if we told her.” Jamie agrees. You watch as her eyes betray the schemes and designs she is weaving and plotting for the days ahead.

“You’re thinking we can use it to explore the mines? We would need candles and more tablets, right?”

“Yes,” offers Jamie. “We would need candles to use in our jumps both ways and tablets to serve as jump ‘markers.’ Fortunately, I believe there are collections of both in the storage area of the Lodge! Also, a priestess such as Gwen should be able to make candles. Yes, I should think so.”

Jamie nods to herself as she gulps down another warm serving of tea and you nod along with her. After all, her guess is as good as yours when it comes to this sort of thing. You left blinking to the Spirit Corps whenever the brass called it in; you mostly just handled the tech, after all.

You run through a few scenes of blinking down the mines in your imagination. It would definitely save time in not having to retrace your steps every journey. “So, what would we do? Leave a tablet every floor?”

“Every five to ten, depending.”

“Ah.”

A tense silence settles between you and Jamie. Only the crackling of the fire and the slight sound of Jamie sipping at her cup interrupts the quiet.

You stand up and out of the all-too-comfy chair. “So, you want to head down now?”

Jamie peers over the rim of her cup and down at the floor as a few thoughts dance over her features. Finally she nods her head “yes” and sets her cup down. She rises, motions with her hand to the East wing of the house, and then the two of you are off to hunt for supplies.

>>>>

The dusty old storage room of the Lodge hid five candles, one of which was broken beyond usage, as well as two tablets that Jamie confidently understands to be in good working order.

While examining an oddly-carved statue of an owl, it's wizened face merely collecting dust in this far forgotten corner, you hear Jamie call out to you from behind a mountain of crates and barrels. When you join her you see that Jamie has found two bucklers of good size and heft. Inspection reveals that the leather straps and aged wood need some oiling but otherwise the shields are whole and sturdy. Jamie quietly offers one to you with the insistence that you need to be careful in the mines.

You accept the gift and promise to wear it if there’s trouble.

>>>>

>Mines: Entrance Room

The body of the Great Shade has long since dissolved into inky smoke and dissipated, leaving no trace or sign that the two of you ever slew such a beast. If it weren’t for the blackened, charred stones and crushed wooden door you would almost be unable to tell a battle took place here at all. You and Jamie move aside the remains of the door and file into the mouth of the caverns.

Jamie leads you down the slope of the dark, wet stone with only that faint light at her hip and a small torch to light your way. You walk past ominous teeth-looking stones that project around the main tunnel. The tunnel gets narrower and narrower until, finally, you reach a set of double doors with a large white gemstone set in the very center.

Jamie looks at you with fierce gaze and nods. You nod in return and she places her hand on the gemstone. The doors swing open onto a narrow staircase that descends into the darkness. The two of you carefully walk downwards, downwards, downwards…

The staircase ends with another set of double doors. Jamie takes a deep breath, places her hand on this second diamond-like gemstone, and then opens these doors as well.

>Mines: Floor 1

A large, rectangular room opens up before you. You can see what you believe to be that far wall thanks to several congregations of light-producing fungi that cling to every nook and cranny in sight. A great sense of ancient, lonely malevolence seems to fill the air and Jamie visibly shudders.

The two of you scan the room with your senses strained. Both of you hold your swords and shields at the ready.

Jamie walks out a few paces and you follow, your feet sinking slightly into the surprisingly loamy soil that rest on the floor of the cave, here. Where your boots met stone before you now walk on gravel-filled soil and sediment.

“Odd…” You mutter, "I wouldn't have expected the ground to be so... soft? Is it all like this?"

Jamie just shakes her head in the negative. "Stay on your guard. Monsters have a tendency to... pop up, yes?"

You walk forward with Jamie until you reach a sudden drop-off in the middle of the room. A large rectangular pit stretches from one side of the room to the other and nothing about it says “this is OSHA approved.” Of course, the large foreboding door that you have to reach in order to progress to the next room lies on the other side of this pit and you point out the large gemstone to Jamie. It barely reflects the dull light of the cavern but you can see the deep red of its facets from here.

“That gem is like the other two that you used to open the doors earlier, except it's red. Why is it red this time?”

Jamie doesn't seem happy about it being red this time. To that effect, she says that red gemstones won’t open until all monsters in the area are exterminated. She then explains that It’s unfortunate but monster-ridden caves that have sat dormant for years and years tend to warp due to the magical energy that suffuses everything. They take on a “monstrous life of their own.”

Such caves become labyrinthine, develop hazardous conditions, or develop tests and challenges designed to make any trespassers suffer and despair. In your case, the room will not let you pass until you slay everything in here. That, of course, means there’s something to slay in the first place. Something you haven’t seen yet.

You give Jamie a nervous look before glancing around the cave furtively.

“So, that means… Where are they, then?” You raise your sword and turn to face behind you. Nothing to your left, nothing to your right, nothing on the ceiling… Jamie backs up towards you and the two of you stand there, back to back, searching the cave together.

“I do not know. They could be lying in wait or they could be on the other side of this ravine, yes?”

You strain your vision and search the far side of the ravine but fail to see anything. You may need to cross it, you imagine, and looking at the pit you can estimate the distance to be at least ten feet or so. It reminds you of a death-pit from an adventure platformer. Needless to say, you should avoid falling in.

Just to be sure, though, you pick up a small rock and toss it into the pit. “Let’s see how deep it goes? Maybe we need to climb down-“

The stone never makes a sound of reaching the bottom. Instead, a large hissing noise rises up from the pit. It grows louder and harsher. You and Jamie back away while watching in horror as three large slime-like bubble creatures rise from the pit while glaring at you and hissing angrily.

“Floats!” Yells Jamie, “If you cut them they will explode, so strike them away with your shield or the flat of your sword!”

>1 Success, 2 Failures
>Mild Failure

“Roger that, let’s be careful!”

As you back away from the Floats you are interrupted by a tremor-like sensation erupting from behind you yet just underfoot. You look to the ground and see it shaking and collapsing, so with shout to Jamie you attempt to dance away. Unfortunately, the ground suddenly gives out and a large, spiky green form rumbles its way out of the dirt. The spikes on this new monster roil and pulse violently and manage to catch at your legs and leave some nasty gashes across your ankle.

“Jacky!” Calls out Jamie. “Those are Needles – keep your distance! They will lash out at you if you get close! Fall back to the entrance!”

You dance around the emerging Needle and jog back to the entrance where you meet up with Jamie. Three Needles and Three Floats. Fuck.

Jamie spits at the ground and growls out angrily in Vietnamese. “Needles are only vulnerable from below. Their underbellies are unguarded… We need a way to flip them and quickly strike at their forms. Do you have any ideas?”

“Perhaps we could push them into the pit?” You wonder aloud.

“That is an excellent idea, but it would require getting close, and I’m not sure if our shields would hold up. Regardless, we would have to defend against the Floats and the other Needles at the same time, yes…”

If floats explode it's time to use them as ammo:
Let's try to bat the Floats into the group of Needles!

That could work but I'd feel it would be more difficult then focusing on one of them

I'm for this. Worst case we eat a hit, but we're tough.

This one sounds good. The explosion might flip them. Even if it doesn't, it rids us of the Floats at least.

The open passageway behind you and Jamie offers an escape route, but otherwise your progress is impeded by the slowly encroaching Floats and Needles.

The trio of Needles work their way over at a glacial pace – similar to starfish or urchins they sort of “crawl” and slide along their bellies on numerous tiny feet. The vicious-looking forms hug tight to the ground and the spikes move about in tight circles as if ever-wary of an incoming attack. In contrast the Floats, through some unknown method of locomotion, carelessly make their way through the air without any sense of danger or caution. They just float on and on towards you and Jamie while hissing viciously. You silently wish that one of them would catch on a Needle and deflate itself…

Ah. That’s it!

“Jamie?” The one-eyed warrior looks at you expectantly. “We need to hit away the Floats – but hit them into the Needles. Two birds one stone, yeah?”

She nods in understanding. “Two birds, yes. After me?”

“After you.”

Jamie takes a few guarded steps forwards and waits for the lead Float, the one darkest in coloration and largest in size, to inch into striking range. You wait with bated breath as Jamie readies her shield=arm and plants her feet firmly on the ground in preparation. With a quick “Kya!” she finally pushes forward with her shield and strikes the Float in a direct hit. It bounces off of her shield and right at the center Needle – the second largest of the three Needles.

The Float, in a comical hissing rage, bounces into the Needle and you watch as a spike punctures its bubble-like form. Then the whole of the Float explodes in a great light and terrible explosion. As the smoke clears away and your vision is cleared of spots you see that nothing is left of the Needle, either.

While that’s not entirely bad, it’s not exactly what you had in mind, either…

“Richmond! You are up now! Strike your foe and show them your determination!”

You clash your shield and sword together with a “Yes!” and then step up to the second Float. By your estimation this Float is lighter in coloration than the first and smaller, but not the smallest. It’s odd that both sets of monsters have a “big, medium, small” situation going on, yeah?

You strike the Float with your shield towards the Needle to your right, the largest of the three (now two).

“If I’m right about this…” You think to yourself, “Then this smallest Float…”

The Float strikes the Needle and, once again, there is an explosion. However, this time the explosion was smaller and the Needle remains in one piece – albeit slightly tipped on its side. You watch in dismay as the Needle wiggles a bit and then collapses back onto the ground still very much alive.

“Size matters.” You say softly. “The size of the monsters…”

“Jacky!” Shouts Jamie from behind you, and you turn around to find her approaching the remaining Float, the smallest of the three. “I’ll finish it off with this one!”

“Jamie, hit the smaller Needle!”

She stops mid-strike and looks at you with slight confusion. The Float proceeds to shriek and hiss as it urges itself towards its prey: Jamie. “What? But I shall finish off the larger one-“

“Just trust me!” You shout. “I want us to test something.”

She shrugs and then lunges into a heavy shove with her shield, the wooden buckler sinking into the mass of the Float for a moment before it bounces away like an oversized kickball.

The smallest Needle and smallest Float collide in one last explosion, the smallest so far. You have the sense to cover your eyes this time and shortly after the blast you look on with anticipation to see that, true to your expectations, the Needle has completely flipped over this time instead of disintegrating or remaining upright.

The Needle traveled a good deal and currently rests upside down in the pit dividing the room; its spikes have caught on the walls of the ravine and the Needle now forms an impromptu bridge. Interesting.

“Aw,” complains Jamie. “Now we have to slay that one as well… Surely we could have killed the larger one if you had let me hit the Float as intended?”

You explain your theory to Jamie about matching the sizes and while still slightly suspicious, she seems to think it over and come to agree with your decision. That still leaves the larger Needle, though, and you offer to flip it over and slay it before crossing the room. You might as well try it with your own hands, right? It’s not like there are other Floats.

“You need to be careful, yes? The Needle looks slow and cowardly but it is fierce up close! It will try with all its power to fend you off rather than be flipped.”

Jamie directs you from afar as you shimmy next to the Needle and parry away its swinging knife-like tentacle-spikes. Really, it’s actually sort of impressive the dexterity this thing can manage with its limbs but that’s not enough to stop you from shunting your sword underneath its mass and flipping it over. In response to your efforts the Needle shrieks in anguish. You are forced to endure a few strikes from its limbs as it lashes out in a flailing frenzy, marking your shoulders and legs with causing painful cuts.

With one last, great heave you flip the Needle over and bellow victoriously as it rolls onto its back. Jamie gives you a congratulatory cheer and urges you to finish it off. You ready your sword and, like a true hero, plunge your blade into the heart of the beast. It gives out a last death throe before beginning to dissolve into a mist of black smoky ichor.

You and Jamie walk across the remaining Needle carefully as you fully expect it to collapse into the darkness below as soon as you step on it. Thankfully, while the experience is disgusting (its pink underbelly is composed of hundreds of wriggling feet) it is also safe and the two of you are able to safely cross.

Jamie gives off a slight shiver as she looms over the defenseless Needle from the other side of the room. “That was unique, Jacky Richmond. I have never walked along the belly of a monster before.” You both laugh. “Surely, one of the more disgusting things I have ever stepped in! What about you?”
