Working your way into it is a little more difficult than you anticipated; you really should have help, but you don't want anyone to see just yet. You do manage – barely – and open the closet door to reveal a full length mirror set in the wall. You have to move some of your niji-chan's clothing to get a good look, but you take a deep breath and see that it is elegant, shimmering, the fire opals matching your right hand, the sapphires setting off your eyes and left hand. The asymmetry is nice, rather than ostentation, the darkness of the satin intensified by the shimmer of the silk. You let your hair down, washing it clean and brushing it out carefully with the winds at your command.


You study it a bit more, then add one final touch; blue tinted rimless glasses with silver stems, resting lightly across the bridge of your nose. Taking a deep breath, you resign yourself to accepting that thing tome, you are done. Tiny silver studs in each ear (thank kami those didn't heal over) and a silver ring with a gemstone of each of the five colors representing your niji-chan, as your wife wears in various accents. Heh, your talons kind of outshine almost any jewelry you wear, except the red jade.

There is absolutely no reason for your heart to be racing so fast, even with the ruyi.

You blinks and study yourself in the mirror a moment longer....then realize what's wrong.

Make-up. You have none on.

It doesn't take long for you to apply it. Well, it actually takes forever, but you're pretending that it doesn't. And it might really not take long. But....deep blue metallic lipstick edged in near darkness, and a light silver rimming of your eyes edged in midnight blue softness for the eyeshadow. Your lashes are fine, because well, they're too fine to do much with, and you really prefer to leave them alone. Nail polish is right out; you don't even know if anything will stick to the gemstones you use as fingers nowadays.

The pounding of your heart tells you that if you delay any longer, you'll delay forever. You glance down, lightly smoothing out the dress; the reinforcement of the chest of the dress obviates the need for a brassier, so really there's not much between you and the air. You tuck the dress, the gems and opals glittering in the reflection of the mirror. You barely recognize yourself.

You feel more naked than you feel when you are naked, which makes NO fuckin' sense at all.

Oh.

This must be what it feels like to be vulnerable.

You've never felt like this in your life.

Not even when Kiki-hime confessed.

It's terrifying.

You close your eyes and take a deep breath, sweeping away from the mirror and walking to the door. Reaching for the handle, the faint tremor in your hand is intensely noticeable. You pull your hand back to your breast, where your Pearl once was. Sure, fight demigods, face down the Grass Cutting Blade, look into your father's eye and be dwarfed by his magnificence. No issues at all. Wear an evening gown for your family? Hardest thing you've ever done.

You silently and quickly step over to the master bedroom from the niji-chans' room, only to discover it is currently empty. You hear voices in the living room, and r a quick check tells you everyone is there. Or in the kitchen.

Closing your eyes, you turn and and walk out into the living room by memory alone. You stop two paces from the hallway and open your eyes. Your heart hammering in your chest. There is the clatter of China hitting the kitchen floor, and that brings all eyes to you.

ALL eyes. Everyone in your clan, and the strangers you brought into it, is in the living and dining room, or the kitchen. From your onee-sama to Kaga Kei. All looking at you.

“....who....who is that?” Kaga Kei is staring at you, completely bewildered.

Shoko-san and Yuuhi-chan rise from near the book case where they were talking quietly, and their eyes are fixed upon you; Jinyuu-onee-sama sets her fan and her tea aside as she marvels at you; Kaga Kei and Fuuta-chan are sitting at the dining room table with Er Yin-sensei; the two who can see are both staring, one in confusion, the other in awe. Inau-kun is in the kitchen, where she has dropped the teacup and saucer she was holding in favor of covering her shocked expression with both hands. To one side of the furniture, your niji-chans and Kiki-hime stand with Kiku-chan, the latter giving you the most shocked stare that you've ever seen on her pixie face, her irises tiny golden pools in the milk of her sclera. Akari and Yui are both staring and fidgeting (both!), but Kiki-hime is struck utterly speechless, her jaw dropped.

You place one hand over the other, and that causes Kei-san to take a sharp breath as she recognizes your hands at least. The blood rising to your cheeks would take but a thought to cease, a slight application of power to prevent a blush that starts in your cheeks and slowly spreads to your ears, and then down your throat, to cover your concealed breasts as your body temperature skyrockets from embarrassment.

Kiki-hime's jaw snaps shut as you take a slow, deep breath, and her socialite instincts kick in. She slowly walks over to you, and you lower your gaze, working very hard at not trembling or fidgeting. “I am ready for our outing, if that is what you had in mind, Kiki-hime,” you murmur softly, though in the absolute silence of the room it seems like a shout.

When she reaches for your hand you immediately respond to the gesture, your eyes coming up to meet hers. In her boots, she is closer to your hight since you are wearing flats. Taking your hand carefully in hers, she bows over it and kisses the red jade ring, sending a thrill down your spine. “I am honored, Ryu-chan, to be yours, now and forever.”

You look down at her, and murmur very softly. “I am yours to take care of; now, and forever, Ryuu Kiki.” She looks up at you, her sky-blue eyes bright and shimmering with joyful tears.

There is a soft thump in the kitchen, and Yuuhi-chan and Shoko immediately make their way to take care of the fainted Inau-kun.

Kiku-chan lets out a shuddery breath and says something in Ainu; Er yin-sensei responds in kind, and Kiku-chan develops a blush as deep as yours. Suddenly there is a soft, low key melody, and Kiki-hime gently takes you by the hand, leading you to the most open space in the room. The feel of everyone's eyes upon you is disconcerting, but you just can't bear to say the words; they catch in your throat as Kiki-hime turns to you, wrapping on hand about your side to pull you close, as you hand instinctively goes to her waist.; the hand clasped in yours extends. You barely catch a glimpse of Akari moving away from the CD player to bow to Yui-chan, who is blushing so badly she is glowing once again, but she too is gently taken in hand by her lover.

And you dance, together.

It lasts longer than anything you've ever done in your life.

It is the shortest moment in all history.

And at the end, your wife kisses you, slowly, softly, deeply.

You have no idea why you're crying, but you are.

And you're not the only one, either.

Yui-chan and Akari-chan are holding one another tight, whispering softly, lover's words, lover's secrets. Shoko-chan and Inau-kun are holding hands, as Yuuchi-chan gently cleans blood from the poor girl's lip. Kaga Kei looks devastated, while Fuuta-chan is as white as a sheet and staring at you and Kiki-hime. Er Yin-sensei is whispering softly to Kei-san in a thick dialect of Hokkaido.

Kiku-chan is at the door, her back to it, watching you and her sister with gentle eyes....but her hand is behind her back, and pressed to the door.

You close your eyes, feeling the sense of dread creeping up. Of the others, only Kiku-chan and Inau-kun seem to feel it....except for Fuuta-chan, who is clearly terrified and becoming more so by the second.

“Please forgive this worthless lizard,” you whisper to Kiki-hime, cupping her cheek gently with your left hand, holding tightly to her right as you move into her.

Her voice is a mere whisper, but it gives you heart, crumbles the creeping dread that threatens to take this moment from you, and sets your heart ablaze.

“If it is Ryuu Ryukusa,” she whispers, gently tilting your chin up to look into your eyes, “then it cannot be helped.”

You gaze into those fiercely protective, loving blue eyes the color of the summer sky, and nod, once.

“We should evacuate the others,” Inau-kun says, her voice nearly calm.

“No where to evacuate to,” you say calmly, stepping away from your beloved wife and gesturing to your niji-chan. Akari and Yui immediately move to flank Kiki-hime, both kneeling with one fist on the ground. “Kiki-hime. Take Akari and Yui and follow Shoko-chan to the temple. Er Yin, take my sister, Kaga Kei, and Fuuta-chan as well, other hallway and same place. Inau-kun, you have a bow?”

“Yes, aniki.” Kamidam....ah, fuck it.

“Kiku-chan, what exactly are you doing?”

“I have made a Barrier on the other side of this door that extends around as much of the complex as I can make it. This place is separated from the complex, and I think most other rooms, so it cannot effect here.” Her dialect is lapsing; she must be really worried.

“So time is not passing outside this room for a distance?”

“Yes, aniki.”

Inau-kun step up next to you, dressed as she was when you first met her, armed only with her bow. Kiku-chan looks at you seriously, ancient eyes in a forever young face, ready to obey your every order or die trying.

Chances are good that it will be Rie and Melinda. Melinda was terrifying enough before, an amorphous thing of hair, mouths, eyes and ugly, ugly hunger. Against a youkai that might be an abomination also, a Fire dragonette and two demigods is a lot of strength. Yuuhi-chan steps to your other side, her nodachi drawn. You didn't bother ordering her to leave, because she wouldn't have. This is what she chose, to be your samurai.

You have very little idea who can stand against such a creature, but you know these three can – a nearly three hundred year old Fire dragonette, a demigod, and an enlightened immortal (senile though she may be).

Does Ryukusa's dress inhibit her movement/flexability at all? It never seemed to matter in the past, but she's never worn anything like this either.

If so, we might need to consider tearing it a bit, because just removing it will probably distract Inau too much (and is probably improper) and I don't think we have time to quickly disrobe and loosely tie the first kimono we find (though if we can, we should do that).

“How long can you hold that from the outside, Kiku-chan?” Crating a barrier while you are on the outside of it is something that you've never heard of being done, by anyone; Kiku-chan's skills are a hell of a lot more varied than you thought.

It's so easy to forget how old she is, and that she is a priestess, not a mere miko.

“Another few minutes only, baka dragon, so if you have a plan, it must be quick.”

You call out through the void. (Er yin, if everyone is settled and safe, please rejoin us.)

It is a reassuring thought, because her idea of warding the room pretty much gives the impression of crafting a massive fortress. (Thank you, sensei. Fuuta-chan?)

(Yes, Ryukusa-sama?) Her fear is intense, but more because she, unlike everyone else, understands more of what is going on than the others. It is happening just as it does in her dreams, but she cannot see the aftermath, only a great chaos.

Her relief that you won't pry too deeply is immense. (It isn't just the horrible black shadow, there is another shadow behind it, a yako.) A black fox – a true nogitsune. Unless....you form an image in your mind and she immediately recoils mentally.

(Thank you, Fuuta-chan, that is enough. More than enough.) Her gratitude is immense and you send her reassuring warmth and affection, before turning your attention to the here and now. Kiku-chan is sweating bullets, and you tap Yuuhi on the shoulder lightly and take a step forward. “Slits.”

The half-nogitsune glances at you, and then down, and immediately slices your dress from mid-thigh to the floor on both sides, scattering bits of silver, tiny sapphires, and fire opals across the floor. She's back on the door in an instant, the casual destruction of your first gown meaningless to her.

“It's not just Melinda. One of the Eight Demon Immortals is with her, probably is why she's gone full youkai. So she and he are now top of the Jade Emperor's hit list, Ten Thousand years.” Huh, you can shorten it in an emergency, neat. Inau-kun steels herself for a real fight, and draws several arrows from her quiver, taking deep, slow, calming breaths. Looking to Kiku, it's clear she's close to her limit.

You reach for Matagama-no-Shitoki and her response is immediate and powerful, even though you are not wearing her at the moment; she rests in the shrine dedicated to you in Er Yin's room at this very moment, and you frame your need in her mind, careful to let her sense every aspect of the situation – including excluding the shrine room, but including Er Yin. Instantly you understand that you must wait for Er Yin to step outside the shrine, and it is the longest fifteen seconds of your life.

You really need to stop having experiences like that, and make a mental note to avoid them unless they are pleasant from now on.

Er Yin steps outside the room, and you and Matagama-no-Shitoki craft the most complex Barrier you've ever tried; excluding sections within it, and enveloping sections outside of it. Through her, you sense the cloudy, strange Barrier that accompanies the youkai, and include that as well, barring anyone from wandering into her influence. She focuses her power upon that, and the Chi you gave her as well, and you feel the Barrier slam into place, transforming you into the shape of your name-sake.

Inau's arrows are shimmering lengths of golden light, and Yuuhi is once more that golden figure of pure destructive potential. Kiku-chan too is dimly glittering, and that dimness is increasing by the moment as she steps away from the door to recover her strength.

“Things are going to go badly very quickly once the door is opened, so be ready.” The others don't need to be told twice; Inau-kun nocks an arrow against her bowstring, and takes a deep breath, only to release it. Yuuhi....well, she's just Yuuhi, so there's no stopping her. Er Yin glides down the hall like she's swimming through the air with a fluid grace that even you would be hard pressed to emulate, her eyes ablaze with those white hot pinpoints of light that show her Void Eyes are open. “Remember, she's huge, amorphous, can move incredibly fast if you don't pay attention to her, and can create mouths and eyes anywhere her hair is.” They acknowledge quietly or silently nod, and Kiku-chan pulls a handful of talismans from her sleeve, looking at the door.

Using wind and water you unlock and open the door; Rie falls through immediately, half collapsing before Inau-kun darts to stop her from falling to the floor, arrow and bow clutched in one hand.

Rie looks like hell; her arm has been bitten open in several places, her white uniform is stained crimson in huge patches, and she has scores of smaller bite marks along her belly and legs. Her hair is a sodden mess and her tails are bloodstained though intact. She pants heavily and mutters, “Rilly bad hairball....”

Inau drags her inside and Kiku-chan is immediately at her side, studying the wounds, her hands gentle and careful despite her revulsion and fear. “Stupid animal,” she hisses....and then she looks alarmed and leaps back. “She's solid!”

Er Yin looks startled. “What?!”

“She's physical! She's a person!”

You don't have time to entirely parse what that means - Inau gapes as she stares out the door, so you pull it open the rest of the way. A massive blob of darkness rises from between the wall and the building, lengths of hair reaching out and clinging with mouths and tendrils to the railings, the walls, the walkways, the roof....anywhere purchase may be had. Melinda is a mere shell of a person, her face nearly a painted mask hovering over a black dress, black holes where eyes and mouth should be, while dozens of eyes and mouths open in the inky blackness of her hair She was disturbing before; now she's nothing less than horrifying.

Your destruction seeing eye can't see much from her, other than telling you she's as destructive as an eternally hungry alien monstrosity can be.

“Lock the door after us!” You shout as you gesture to Yuuhi, who bolts through the open door and leaps over the railing and off the walkway. You grab the still-shocked Inau-kun and slide through the air like it was water, your tail slamming the door shut and leaving Er Yin and Kiku-chan to tend the badly wounded (and physical?) Ryiekatsumoun. Blobs and swaths of hair erupt from the massive shape before you and you thrust your left hand at her, holding onto Inau-kun with your right.

The world is strobe lit and brilliant as blue-white bolts of lightning erupt from the swirl of dark clouds overhead. Inau-kun yelp in terror, wrapping her arms about your waist. The lightning illuminates swaths of black hair that burn and smolder, eyes exploding if they are too close to the bolts you draw out of the sky.

“Ryu- that's impossible!” she shouts over the explosions of instant thunder that accompany more shining bolts.

You catch up to Yuuhi-chan, who is still in free fall, flinging red and black ichor from her blade. “We're demigods, Inau-kun, you should be used to it!” you tease, watching the massive ball of hair and mouths and eyes clamber down after you. Yuuhi-chan lands lightly on her feet and sheathes her blade, looking up at the abomination; you hover next to her, gently setting Inau-kun down.

Yuuhi-chan keeps her eyes on the wounded horror above as a tall man steps out of the darkness of the Barrier, his silver and onyx mask glinting as she flexes black metal gauntlets. Inau-kun nocks another arrow, as you float a few feet forward to face the man in white silks and black steel. “That is a surprise, Ryuu Ryukusa,” he calls in heavily accented Japanese. “That you can call the lightning and not use the power of Horobi to do so is a magnificent trick.”

“Hui Daji, the Black Fox Demon, I presume,” you call across the forty feet or so that separates you.

He gestures, and Melinda slows her descent, though she still clambers/drops/slides down towards you. “In the flesh....” he calls, black humor dripping from his voice.

Which isn't a yes, you note. “All right....while it may be futile to ask, care to turn from the path of wickedness and darkness and seek redemption by following the Tao?” You slowly drift off to one side, while Inau-kun moves to the other. Yuuhi-chan keeps her eyes on the descending ball of ravenous hair and eyes, and maintains her ground.

“No, thank you. I am quite well served as one of the favorites of Enma-Oh. On the other hand, if you would like to assist us in bringing down the Celestial Heavens and throwing down the Jade Emperor....” he counteroffers, grinning beneath his mask.

“Too bad, I guess I'll have to enact that order of execution from His Celestial Majesty, may he Reign Ten Thousand Years More.” Oh, now you have his full attention.

“Surely the Jade Emperor has not debased himself treating with outsiders....” His insult isn't really all that strong; you seem to have shaken him to the core.

“You might want to consider a change in venue – if you stay in Japan you are to be executed in the name of the Jade Emperor, may he live Ten Thousand times Ten Thousand years, under the auspices of and at the request of Amaterasu-Omikami.” He clenches his gauntlets, and Melinda descends to seethe and giggle behind him, eyes and mouths opening and closing in the massive ball of darkness.

“He wouldn't dare....” a soft, strangely sweet yet sickeningly saccharine voice murmurs from the shadows off to Melinda's side. A Spectre dressed in shadows and shimmering veils floats to the side, and Melinda's body cowers and the amorphous creature slithers back from the strange apparition.

“Fyusumi the Demon Sorceress, I presume? Melinda and Rie must be your work....” You say this mostly for the benefit of your allies. “Tell me what you did to Rie and Melinda, and I might consider giving you a day's grace to leave Japan unharmed.:

“Bold words,” murmurs the Black Fox.

“I still doubt that he would try and extend his power to our age old enemies,” the sorceress claims.

“He did dare. And you can see the truth of the matter on my face if you dare to look.” You pulls back slightly and feel, more than see the flicker of fire above you. “You have one last chance – either leave Japan, turn from your dark ways, or die. Final offer....”

“I think we will need more proof than your undoubtedly good word,” murmurs the black fox as he pulls a fan made of lace-like black steel and spreads it wide. The sorceress gestures and whatever remains of Melinda slowly moves closer, nuzzling the shadowy figure that floats some fifteen feet from the ground.

“....be careful what you wish for....” you murmur softly.
