Masumi sits outside the principal’s office, on a comfy black sofa, trying her best to relax. She has already missed fourth period and does not want to fall into further trouble by missing yet another class.

You walk out of the principal’s office after what felt like over an hour of explaining what happened today. Masumi sighs from relief and bows her head apologetically.

“I’m sorry for dragging you into this Yu, I never wanted to get you in trouble.”

“Relax, no skin off my back today princess, the principal understands that I acted as your self-defense and Junichi was a victim. Don’t worry about me, worry about yourself.” Saying this, you know that a girl like Masumi would never get into trouble with that kind of crowd without good reason. You also know that Yasadai and his lackeys would never have fallen to such methods as threatening and intimidating a defenceless girl unless they had no choice. The risks for both parties are simply too great for something like this to happen, yet here we are.

You have never considered yourself a good detective, but this certainly needs to be looked into, you just don’t know how to go about it while respecting Masumi’s privacy.

“Do you know those guys or something?”

Her eyes avoid yours suspiciously and she takes a moment to respond.

“Not really, I have seen them around here and there but I don’t even know their names. That should be the last we hear of it though, since Yasadai was suspended and nearly kicked out of his club.”

It would have almost been a believable story if Masumi was capable of deception. It looks like she won’t budge easily on this matter. Its none of your business, so getting involved without her will would cause trouble.

“So everything is all cool then?”

She hesitates again, her eyes finally return to meet your own. “I’m fine Yu, I appreciate your concern, but nothing is wrong.”

You are certain she is hiding something now, but she has every right to do so, you have been a friend of Masumi’s for a long while, to say that you were truly close to her in all that time would be a lie. It’s no use getting worked up about it, so you head back to class, which flows by slowly. You catch several students peering over at you on a few occasions. As usual, word spreads quickly and your fame has reached new heights today. You imagine most students fear and admire your skills. Truth be told, you don’t feel special about it.

When school ends for the day, Miki approaches you with an unfamiliar woman following closely behind her. She looks to be in the same year as your sister and you get the impression they must be acquaintances or friends. She looks like an innocent girl with shoulder length black hair, sporting simple glasses. She looks up at you, but when your eyes meet, she quickly looks down again.

She stutters out words as best she can “You…are Yu? Sorry…that sounds confusing, my name is Akemi, your sister has told me about you but…umm…”

She stops completely dead in her tracks, her arms together in her lap, shoulders slouched forward and low, remaining completely silent. It’s cute just how embarrassed and intimidated she is, but you hope that you don’t have this effect on most people now.

“Is it okay if my friend Akemi stays over for the night Yu? She is really smart and I need her help studying, I hope you don’t mind.”

You look her over for a minute, pondering the next move.

This is a good opportunity for you to keep on your sister’s good side and meet someone new at the same time. She looks like she could be an amusing person to hang out with. You already regard her as being opposite to your existence in almost every way, but you feel like dropping an opportunity to meet a girl is unwise. You remember Junichi’s ‘sage advice’ regarding women “If you have an opportunity to meet a girl, do it, regardless of all consequences.” Maybe Junichi is not somebody to take advice from, but you see no harm in it for now.

“I would be happy to get to know you a little as well Akemi. I would be happy to help you both with studying if you want”

Akemi nervously sighs, the only response you get from her on that front.

“Sure, but be careful Yu, Akemi is probably much smarter than you, even if she is one grade lower.”

“I like a challenge Miki, you have only further fueled the fires of conflict and passion”

“P-passion?”

“Don’t scare her away Yu! She only just introduced herself and you’re already talking about passion!”

“I was referring to the passion of two young girls who secretly desire to study each other in the late evening! I am ashamed you would assume I was having inappropriate thoughts about her”

At this point Miki starts blushing furiously, but it looks like at least most of it is from sheer anger. She cuts loose, ignoring all volume restrictions “I should never have bothered asking! She is scared half to death already!”

You look over to her, but something about her has changed. She seems to be staring at something down the corridor. You turn around to get a quick look, when you spot the shadowy presence that has been watching you, attached to the wall, but without any obvious owner.

“Hey Akemi, Yu, what are you two looking at all of a sudden?”

She cannot see the shadow? You look around and realize that its likely only you and akemi have seen it. You know why you can see it; it has something to do with your new abilities. Is it possible she possesses similar powers? In any case, the shadow slowly fades away after a few moments.

“Wow, akemi has been staring into space a bit lately, but I never thought you were doing it too.”

She lowers her tone and slides right up to you, so that akemi cannot hear her, “Maybe she suits you more than I thought cute big brother.”

“Watch it punk, if anybody else hears you say that I will remind everyone that you still sleep with half a dozen stuffed animals”

Miki pouts a little but calms down in a few minutes. “We might as well walk home together then”.

You silently agree with a purposeful nod and you walk home with the two of them. Miki is a chatterbox the whole way and you find yourself just listening to her the whole way home. You ponder what secret Akemi may have and if it’s safe to ask her in private tonight.

You decide to confront her about the shadow, but only once you are alone with her.

You return home and settle in your room for a while, allowing the reality of the situation to seep in. She may already know about your powers, if so, she could be a threat. Her cutesy embarrassment could be an act in order to lower my guard. If she can stop time, she is capable of anything. You devise a simple strategy to lure your sister away. You head into the kitchen and drink the rest of the milk in the house. You know your sister loves having cereal in the evening so she will likely have to go purchase more milk. All you have to do is convince her that it would be much more efficient if she goes alone and that she should go to a further away store to get a good bargain.

After an hour of relaxation and watching TV, you all get down to business. Miki reads up on the topic first, going over it with Akemi, then she answers questions that Akemi throws at her. If Miki gets a question wrong, you are then allowed to answer. Making it a competition for Miki was a stroke of brilliance on Akemi’s part. In the short time she has known our dynamic she changed her teaching methods to suit. This girl must not be underestimated. Once a tied score is reached, Miki goes to get some cereal just as expected, but finds that the milk and cereal is gone.

You don’t remember throwing away or eating any cereal, but it looks like you never needed to dispose of the milk. You hand Miki some money and tell her to take her time and find a good bargain.

“Do you wanna come with me Akemi?”

“I-I’m fine here thanks, my legs are sore from all the standing today”.

It’s not a very good excuse but Miki buys it completely.

When Miki leaves, you are left with Akemi in the living room, who is sitting at the edge of the cushion, like she is ready to jump up immediately.

You are just about to speak up after a few moments of silence when she suddenly speaks, like someone between her previous stuttering and a normal person.

“Yu… you saw that shadow today right?”

You were not expecting her to start the conversation, you start to suspect that she may have disposed of the cereal well before you even thought up your plan.

“I saw the shadow, I thought I was the only one who could see it, why can you see it?”

“She is my mother”

You did not expect her to say that.

“Do you mean; the shadow is your parent?”

“Y-yes…my mother has been spying on you…I wanted to apologies for her…she can be a bit invasive.”

“Why is your mother a shadow?”

“She is existing in a realm that mirrors our own in many ways, but is separated by a powerful barrier of m-magic. You can see her because you are s-sensitive to magic now, it’s like a sixth sense. I…I’m terribly sorry if this is making no sense to you.”

“So your mother has a power to enter this realm?”

“She is a powerful mage who has been given permission to break the boundary between planes in order to gather information about you. Once she discovered that you were a human mage, she asked me to try to make contact with you.”

There is a lot to take in, you have so many questions but you only have so long until your sister gets back.

You decide that for now you will believe everything she says and keep moving until you have no more time to talk.

“Is there a way I can talk to your mother?”

“She is always w-watching…she won’t be able to talk back…but she can understand us. I can hear her voice sometimes; I would be able to translate a conversation if you needed to talk. She wanted me to…to give you this…” She rummages through her bag until she finds a large tome, holding it towards you with her head bowed. You take it and inspect the cover. It looks to be a very old book; on the cover it reads “The life of Gaius Marius”. You think he might have been some roman general or politician.

“I assume this book is not just about some roman and that it has useful information in here.”

“Y-yes, my mother wrote it herself, it contains information about the history of our order as well as detailing several basic spells for beginners, though you may find most of it rather…challenging with your background.”

“One more question quickly am I what you would call a mage? How many other mages are there?”

“You are not a mage like my mother or the rest of the order…you are different. We believe you may be a Ch-Chronomancer.”

You hear the door handle turning suddenly, you slow time down almost instinctually, hiding the book quickly. You notice that Akemi’s eyes slowly lag behind your movements. She can tell your manipulating time, but cannot keep up with the speed of your movements. Time resumes again just as your sister walks into the room.

“I hope you have been coming up with tough questions while I was away because I am fired up!”

So your serious conversation is brought to an end. You will have to pick it up another time, but for now, you need to read this book.

“I have to catch up on my own homework, I will leave the rest in your capable hands Akemi.”

She makes a rather cute ‘hmm’ sound as she nods to you. You slip upstairs with the book in hand again, ready to learn about a whole new world. The book has a table of contents and you wonder if its best to start from the beginning or to skip to what you need.

You decide it is wise to start from the beginning. Being impatient won’t get you anywhere.

The introduction alone took over two hours to read, it mostly explains basic terminology.

From what you gather, most mages manipulate mystical energies housed inside their bodies, hardwired into them from birth. This energy is often called mana. Mana can also exist in the world, supposedly a mage can draw upon this latent mana outside their bodies to perform even greater magic. The term mage refers to an individual who has the natural gift of mana in their body, which is passed down through generations. It is possible for someone to be a mage and never find out for their whole lives, because harnessing mana takes time and practice.

There is no mention of time powers so far, the most practical mention is the ability to manipulate fire or water. Apparently the mage is often attuned to an element from birth and it is much easier to manipulate for them than others. In fact, most mages only ever use one element. The term element is rather vague here though, it seems to encompass much more than physical concepts.

This is some crazy stuff, you thought you might be alone and that intimidated you, but the fact that a whole secret society existed under your nose, under the noses of everyone, is frightening to you.

You start reading into the history of the order. ‘The Order’ simply refers to the collective aristocracy of mage families. Each family reigns supreme over one or two elements. Mages of ancient times were said to once command many elements and were godlike beings. The dilution of mana over generations slowly weakened the mages.

You lost track of time, it’s now nearly 10pm and it sounds like Miki and Akemi have retreated into Miki’s bedroom for the night. You go out to get some take out, you feel you deserve it after all that reading. On your way home through the streets, the shadow appears along the wall next to you. You look towards it with curiosity, having heard it is another human being.

“Hey Akemi’s mother, you don’t need to tail me you know.”

The shadowy hand points towards an alleyway. You look down the dark alley but see nothing of interest. You feel it’s dangerous aura though, something predatory is watching you, form beyond the vale. The shadow seems to have been trying to warn you of its presence. You wonder if this is a new development or if there have been two beasts watching you this whole time.

You have nothing to fear. You bring back the courage you found earlier today against Yasadai, against a man who wanted to hurt your friends. You take that courage and press onward.

You step into the alleyway, watching for movements in the shadows. You spot strange shadowy tendrils flickering in the air, as something creeps closer. As it comes closer to the lights of the nearby street, it’s terrifying form is revealed. Its large, three black claws extend from its long, relatively thin arms. Its head reminds you off a triceratops, with a huge chitinous plate adorning its head. Its legs are bulky and short in comparison to its other limbs and its razor sharp teeth are dripping with saliva. Its hunching over, its long claws almost touching its toes, but it is standing on two feet. If it were to straighten its back, you would imagine this thing standing in at over seven feet, now it looks to be a little taller than you, but much wider and more terrifying. Its black skin is barely visible in the darkness, but its claws start to emit a cold blue aura, lighting up the creature’s body.

It no longer intends to hide. Whatever this beast is, for Akemi, her mother, Masumi, Junichi and your sister Miki, you have to kill it and make the world safer for them. You hear a woman’s voice echo within your mind, but its unfamiliar, it sounds like an older woman.

“This creature feeds off time anomalies like yourself, it has already claimed a victim today.”

You remember the man you saved from his plummet and grit your teeth in anger.

“This beast has taken back the time you stole, now it intends to remove the cause of any further issue to time.”

Whatever this thing is planning, you don’t intend on giving it even a moment of its stolen time back. You can’t help but feel like the prey this time instead of predator, but you figure it’s almost certainly uglier than it is powerful.

"Look here ugly, you dont even have the time to take my time energy, because your going to die right here and now".

You decide to slow time to about 50% and study its moves, fight it until you can come up with a strategy. Time starts to slow down and you prepare for its offensive as it crouches low, ready to burst forward.

It suddenly rushes forward at incredible speed; it almost runs you through with its claws immediately. If you had decided to hold back any further you may have perished already.
