His eyes met Ginrei's, and he saw the annoyance in the elderly captain's eyes as he watched his juniors.

And then his eyes met the mad eyes of Kenpachi once more and smiled.

"Do you have any ideas?" He asked softly as she bit her lips and twitched,glancing over her shoulder mumbling to herself "Sorry, could you speak up? I didn't quite get that"

"We all know it isn't a soul reaper, if it was, they'd have come for me" She says quickly, almost hissing the words out, as she tried to pull her captain's coat's sleeves over her hands "Obviously the little Quincy is getting bolder by the day"

"Yeah, no doubt about it" Isshin said angrily "He's been Targeting squads, and has started to move up the ranks, obviously he was testing himself and is gaining a bit of confidence"

"Probably to force our hand" Ginrei said flatly

"How do we know its a man?" Shinji asked, looking back over his shoulder "But yeah that's clear as day, this Todesjäger is trying to draw out us big dogs"

"And we can't just sit around and let him" Isshin said, pausing for a moment "or her continue on her merry way"

"Of course not" Ukitake said, Ginrei nodding in agreement "But we have next to no idea where they are...they've been quite since the last killing, they're trying to erase their tracks"

"Oh she's" the sixth's captain said, his eyes going wide as he froze for a moment, covering his mouth as closed his eyes"In the field"

Silence fell between the five, as they all shared the same thought, will she be next

"Nrrr" Kenpachi growled, looking worried "She couldn't die from this"

"Worried about her, Asagi?" Shinji asked as the kenpachi said nothing, biting into her thumb "it'd be a real pain to find a new obsession right"

"I'm sure she'll be fine" Shiba laughed, bellowing as he puffed his chest out and grinned "I mean I've only seen her...well I've seen what she does to hollows once"

Asagi smiled and then frowned

"We can only hope" Ginrei said sternly "She may be skilled, but she's still a novice, she has no experience against a foe like this"

"What an odd twist of fate Kemuri, that'd we'd meet each other out here" Kaname says as I walk down the twisting streets of the city, looking up from the crowds gathered around me "In the middle of our duty"

I smirk as I see my blind friend sitting on the roof right over my head, his hair done up in an odd almost star shaped pattern, and his face covered with a white mask and set of goggles

"Yeah, usually I don't run into any one at all" I say as I hop up to his side "Let alone a friend like you"

He turns and looks over at me, chuckling.

"You sound happy to meet me" He says, laughing as he stands back up

"Well, I was getting a little lonely" I sigh as I walk with him along the side of the roof above the bustling streets under us "Since the hollow I've been hunting is a really tricky bastard, and has been hiding and running when I get anywhere near close"

"Maybe its afraid of you" He says calmly, before he pauses and nods "Well, perhaps I could be of some help?"

"Last I sensed, he was heading into the poor district in front of us" I say angrily as Tosen's Reisatsu flares

"Picking off those society doesn't notice' he hisses venomously "Disgusting creature"

"No doubt" I say bluntly as I walk to his side "So, how's the ninth treating you"

"Sometimes I feel out of place, especially since so few share my...way of thinking" He sighs "But they're my comrades, good people. Its rare to get sent out into the field, we're usually meant to wait in case we must protect Seireitei, Kind of odd I was given this task, really"

"Maybe the other divisions are overwhelmed?" I say shrugging as he nods

Naa, this is not some huge marquee moment we can't afford to screw up. Better to save it.

I land along side the small, well kept garden. I sigh and look around, feeling the faint presses of this thing's presences all around me. I frown and grip Ryūketsu no kōtei as I rest it on my shoulders, and look around for any sign of this damn thing, its been like this all day now, this little game of cat and mouse. Its been teasing me with tastes of it and little hints, but everytime I get close to it, it runs off.

Honestly I'm a little pissed off right now. I can practically hear it laughing and taunting me everytime it slips out of my fingers.

THERE, I start running down the street towards where I can feel it, somewhere near that bridge up ahead

"WAIT, DON'T RUSH AHEAD SO CARELESSLY!" Tosen shouts behind me as I reach the bridge "Wait..KEMURI DON'T!"

"Alright, you pain in my ass, where the hell are" I say as I hear the water splash under me, and rise up

"KEMURI!" Tosen shouts, as he tackles me.

The bridge shatters and explodes, an white, club like tail slamming into where I was standing a second ago. I hear a shriek as the bridge clears in a matter of moments, as something long and snake like stands up from the river

"It was baiting you" Tosen pants as he gets off of me "I realized that just in the nick of time, if I was a second late..."

"Annoying man" the serpent hisses, its mask like a skeletal Kubuki mask "You ruined my plaaan, oh well, more for meeee"

"You really think a little smack would take me down?" I ask angrily

"Don't get to riled up Kemuri" Kaname says calmly

"Oh you'd know if I was mad" I growl as the thing rises up above us, and begins to open its mouth

Its going to attack, which means it'll leave me an opening for my own strike. But its a small space of time where I can attack before it can hit me back, if it's head can move as fast as its tail can.

I unsheathe my blade, looking up at it as water flows from its second set of teeth. Oh, so that's what its going to do. Alright, the opening is even smaller than I thought it was.

I charge, as a blast of water barely misses me, blowing what's left of the bridge to rubble. I see Tosen Shunpoing away a moment before.

I stumble, and swing as the bridge falls under me. My blade catches it stomach, as I fall into it. My weight forces my zanpakuto deeper into its flesh, and down.

The hollow screeches, and thrashes around, as I struggle to hold on.

In retrospect, what the hell am I doing rolling a d20? Always pick a d100 option, otherwise you have a 5% chance to fuck over everyone else's roll. Only saboteurs pick a d20 when a d100 is available.

Not trolling, not salty, just obviating the meta of this rolling system. Sure, you are more likely to roll a crit success too, but crit successes so far have not really been amazing enough to justify the chance of guaranteed failure overriding the other 4 rolls.

Well, Its hard to swing a blade underwater, not that I have to worry about that. If I lose my grip this thing is going to send me flying with how much its thrashing around. Looking down at my legs dangling above the now violently frothing water under me and the snake like hollow.

Grabbing a hold of it with my left hand as it coils round and round, chasing after Tosen as runs the canals, trying to get an chance to attack it.

I look over my shoulder and sigh, and see the river under me, So I'm upside down fantastic.

"Oh great" I growl as tighten my grip on the hollow.

I take a deep breath to calm my nerves, as it rises back up in the air. Pushing with all my strength, my Zanpakuto sinks into its flesh up to few inches from the pommel.

Then the hollow shrieks, and I fall from it, my blade ripping free as I look up at it.

It turns around and roars. I grit my teeth as I feel its body slam into me, sending me back do the streets.

I stand back up coughing and feeling the swing in my guts and lungs. I take a breath and swing my blade, cleaning it of blood as the hollow raises its tail like a club, and swings it, shattering and smashing everything in its way

Its hard to tell through all the splinters and shards of stone flying towards and around me, but I'm pretty sure I just saw the end of that things tail clearly...before it slammed into the ground. Its shaped like a spiked club, to round to be a kanabo. White like its mask...hard to cut.

I raise my zanpakuto, its a breath or two away from my now. I can't cut through it, at least not in anyway that can guarantee I don't get smashed into paste. Of course, it tapers! I might not be able to cut the club itself, but the the way it bulges from the tail...its such a small part.

I could take it one swing. I only have a second to follow through with this plan, if I don't do this right, a few of my bones are breaking

Closing my eyes, I feel air rush over my face, like a morning breeze.

I step back, the tail swings past me, I open my eyes and step forward as it whips around past me, and swing down.

There's a loud thud, as the club part of the tail bounces once, leaving a crater before it skids to a halt.

"YOU LITTLE CUR!" the hollow shrieks, sounding like a crying woman as it turns to face me "YOU DARE TOUCH MY BEAUTIFUL TAIL!"

I see cuts down its front, as Tosen gets tossed off of it and into the water.

The hollow opens its mouth, and charges me, roaring that unearthly animalist scream.

I hold my right palm out, my white hair blowing around and rising up from the sheer force of the hollow's scream. Blue flames begin to flow over my fingers as I take a deep breath, and confidently begin the incantation of what might be my favorite Kido spell.

"Ye lord! Mask of flesh and bone, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man!" I roar as the thing charges me, ripping up the stones in the ground and crushing everything under it as the blames spread and grow bright, and start to fly from my fingers

I can feel its warm breath on my face, and I can't help but grin in anticipation.

"Truth and temperance, upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws"I roar, grabbing my wrist with my other hand, place my Zanpakuto over it as I finish the incantation

The hollows roar is drowned out by the scream of my Sōkatsui. The world becomes a sea of blue flames and light, as the blast grows, erasing and burning everything in front of me with a satisfying crackle of flame.

The hollow screams as its forced back to the other side of the river, smoking from its mask and several burn and now cauterized wounds

I smirk, and shunpo over to it, as Kaname finally gets out of the water, dumping water out of his mask.

"NO NO NO, NOT LIKE THIS!" the hollow shrieks, as it begins to struggle to right itself to flee through the streets again " I can't die like thisssss!!!"

Even though it could still fight both of us rather handily.

"So undignified" Tosen says flatly

"Lets end this, already" I say calmly as I run forward after the clumsy, panicking snake trying to force and squeeze itself through the tight and cramped alleys ways, all of which are now practically filled with the hollow

It starts to slither away, thinning itself as it tries to desperately the two scary shinigami chasing after it.

It seems to avoid or ignore every attack we hit it with, shrugging of cuts and treating its bleeding wounds like nothing. Its just too...slippery.

Well that's an idea, I smirk, and stab my zanpakuto through its tail, pinning it to the ground as Kaname runs past me.

"FINISH IT!" I shout, as I struggle to keep it in place, as he runs up its back to its neck.

The hollow shrieks, and begins to spit out water and some strange, oily substance from its back.

Tosen slips, and on instinct, I rush to his side, ripping my blade out of the hollow as I try to get it before it gets away.

I swing down in a curving arc, as Tosen rushes under my swing, and swipes upwards, cutting through the back of its neck and mask along with my strike. The X slice into the back of its head grows and turns red as it lets out an glass shattering cry.

I grit my teeth, as it vanishes under our feet.

"We make a good team don't we, Kimi?' Kaname says happily, as he wipes some of the slime off of himself

"Yeah, we're just lucky this thing was a coward or we could've been in trouble" I snort, as I run my fingers down Ryūketsu no kōtei, cleaning the blood of it as Kotei growls inside of it, vibrating the blade "Oh quite"

"Never a good idea to get into a fight already wounded" I say bluntly as he sighs and nods

"Well, only slightly" He say softly, lifting up and flexing one of his arms "just a few cuts here and there, nothing to worry about"

"Good" I say, walking out of the now water logged alley "Don't need you getting overwhelmed, I'd feel so guilty if you die because of wounds you got from helping me"

"And so would I in the reverse" He says walking by my side "Also, you're worrying...much more than usual, Kemuri"

"Oh, just a bunch of our comrades haven't come back from their missions recently, don't want one of my friends to join the list is all" I say flatly as Tosen nods

"That would explain it" He says happily "But I assure you I can handle myself"

'I know, doesn't mean you can't die" I say bluntly "So, you're hollow, do you know were it hunts or anything about it?"

"Graveyard out of town, I've been studying its comings and goings meticulously" He says almost proudly "It hasn't eaten in awhile, so it'll be desperate and ferocious, it has a voice like nails on stone, According to the file on it, its somewhat like a gorilla and rat, though...that doesn't really help me, ahaha"

"I can imagine" I say calmly as we head towards the forest outside of the town "Any abilities you know"

"It can produce Iron chains and spikes" he says calmly and kind of bluntly

Tosen lays against one of the older headstones, that has withered and wasted away into a near shapeless rock. He doesn't move for awhile, and appears to be thinking, or listening rather.

He puts his Zanpakuto between his crossed legs, and stands up slowly, moving in a meticulous and planned way, like he's trying to avoid making any noise that can distract himself.

"Kemuri, go around the other side, it'll be easier to trap him if I know where to lead the battle" he says sternly, as I nod and begin to walk away from my friend, dead leaves crunching under my feet as I saunter my way to the farthest tombstone to my right.

The wind whistle ominously, and I swear I hear another set of steps behind me.

I Narrow my eyes, Hm, I have a feeling this thing is stalking me, from the shadows between the old and forgotten graves.

Well its a good thing Tosen has a good set of ears, so I don't have to shout to get his attention. Still I need to be sure he actually hears me all the way over there, and if I speak too loudly the hollow will hear me and realize we've found its hiding place. Things like this are a little tricky aren't they. Brown, dead leaves blow past my face as I take a deep breath, trying to figure out how quite I should be.

I breath out and take another breath, cupping one hand around my mouth and pausing for a second before taking the leap.

"Tosen, it's behind the grave under the tree, in the center" I say, speaking above a whisper but still quietly "Its probably waiting for us to get close to strike or flee"

I see Tosen's odd hair style behind a grave on the other side of the graveyard. He beckons me forward and I nod, as I see him run to another gravestone. I walk behind the one in front of me as he darts between them, I pick up the pace, trying not to make to too much noise

Not good at being sneaky, I don't like it but...well sometimes you have to do what you have to.

I peek over the last grave, resting my foot on one of the twisting roots of the tree.

I pause for a moment, and the hollow turns around, snapping its fat hands as the piles of leaves around me rustle and break apart. Chains fly our from them and the ground under my feet. I try to get out of their way, but two wrap around me.

One over my waist, and the other around my dominant hand. I glare at the hollow's rat like skull as it creeps up to me slowly and.

"Remember ,Ryūketsu no kōtei!" I shout, kneeling and stabbing my Zanpakuto into the ground in the same motion.

I smirk as my sword gets coated in blood and grows into the heavy claymore as it boil, clear as glass, serrated like a sharks tooth. With that crucifix shaped guard.

The rat manages to get a hit or two on Tosen, damaging his mask pretty badly, before it hears me shout and turns around, trying to take my head off with a well placed swipe.

I frown, deapan as my flesh "burns' turning ashen black and craw before floating off in a cloud of cinders as I become a cloud of smoke. The chains and hollow claw fall through me as I step forward.

And with a grin on my face, reform half a step later, drawing my blade and slicing a deep cut into the hollow's stomach, staining its black skin red.

It roars, clutching the wound, trying to keep itself in as I spin my blade around. its now a beautiful, deep scarlet, and is dripping bloo

Tosen moves into its side, raising his Zanpakuto over his head in a high stance, trying to take the hollows head off in one swing. Clever, best to not waste any breath on being too flashy. The hollow roars, swinging its over grown arms at my blind friend.

I catch its wrist in the guard of my blade, the force from its strike shaking my bones. This thing is pretty strong but...what hollow isn't? They're all dangerous, even if you know how to kill them.

It raises its free hand to crush my skull.

I frown, and drag my sword over its wrist, rending it and ripping it to shreds.

The ground cracks, I can feel something moving under my feet, rising up through the wet dirt. I sigh, and feel that familiar burn as I let my Reiatsu burn my body to a cloud of smoke. I feel cold Iron run through my body and flow around it, as a sea of more spikes, like giant rusted nails stab through the earth. I flow up on, and grab onto it.

And the second I reform, more spikes launch under my feet. I kick off one I'm on, as its splits up into metal shards. I land on the ground, feeling a sting in my leg as I spike shoots up, I roll out of the way and stand up, stepping back as another rises up in front of me.

I grit my teeth, but stop when I see Tosen swaying through them, getting cut here and there, his Kimono in tatters. I leap up as one rises up from my feet, and turn to smoke once more.

The Hollow stands up fully, no doubt looking for our tattered corpses.

I reform, crouching on the spike in front of it, as Tosen walks next to it, ripping the ruined lower half of his mask off, leaving those ridiculous looking goggles


The hollow looks terribly confused.

I smack him with my pommel and it roars and tries to swipe me across the stomach.

The Hollow follows, and I flick my wrist at him as I fall on his back. I hold my hand up and focus on the wound in his gut, feeling his warm blood drip down on me. Until I feel a tug, inside of him. My Reiryoku.

My frown twists into Kotei's sick grin as the thing throws itself at me, I giggle, the smell of blood tasting like good sake.


I stand and force my hand down, it feels like I'm pulling a basket full of rocks down with it, The hollow falls, as I turn my blood inside him into razor sharp blade, cutting their way through his body.

He screeches and tries to bite me.

I rip my blood out of him, and he gets pulled with it as his skin bursts, slamming him into one of his spikes.

But he's still alive, battered, beaten and bloodied.

I lick the sweat off of my lips.

The Hollow glares at me as Tosen looks confused, one of the hollow's eyes has burnt out, revealing its old human one.

"What...was that, Kemuri?" My friend asks as I face the hollow down

I can smell his desperation.


He rips his arm free of the spike, and charges me.

Well, let the record state I just want to lop the thing's head off. I am yet to hear a good reason why we can't just try to do that. If the hollow was doing something particularly clever or taking advantage of some circumstances that would give us trouble, I could understand us struggling. This thing is just face tanking us near as I can tell, 2 of us no less.

And even then, I would assume there would need to be a vacant position in the first place for us to fill. And as for the drawn out fight thing, part of this is that this is HM's writing style, important-ish fights usually take a few posts, and that this Hollow is clearly a step above the regular one. But it's dead now and a true boss fight is imminent, so that doesn't matter.

the reason for normal hollows lasting more than a post or two is because the ones you fight on screen aren't normal and are moving towards menos.

They are inded, for good reason. They have graduated from eating human souls to eating hollows. They would actually starve faster if they hung out in the human world.

You would probably be better off taking the "Tucker's Kobolds" approach if you want to use weaker enemies and have them be interesting/challenging I.E. get creative and insidious with circumstances in order to make them more threatening. Just throwing them at us verbatim is not wise.

Remember that for shinigami, one of the major concerns with dealing with hollows is finishing them off before they can retreat to Hueco Mundo. A hollow that doesn't have the element of surprise or a weakened target or a numerical advantage or SOMETHING, is a dead hollow. They know that, that's why they are generally pretty keen on fleeing from healthy, full-fledged shinigami when they get spotted by one.

and the fog in my head clears, the fear fading away as I manage to rip myself away from the instinct screaming at me. they might keep me alive in battle, but I'll be dammed if I turn and run from one person. and I'd rather die than get shot in my back as I'm running away. I might be dead, but I won't kick dirt over my pride and honor just because of something worthless like fear.

I take a deep breath and let go of tosen.

"Come on" I say furiously, more at my self than anything else "I'm not turning tail and running from a fight!"

"Do you even know what that was?" He asks, sounding a little panicked himself

"Of course not" I say grinning "But....I have a feeling, what kind of person can fire blue arrows of light"

"....A quincy? but they were wiped out weren't they?" He asks, drawing his own blade as he steps away from me, making the two of us a harder target "What's one doing out here?"

"So were the Samuria, and I"m still here" I laugh"Seems you can't really scrub something out from the world's fabric, You are a quincy right?"

The only response is another one of those arrows, fired right between us, and a amused chuckle.

"Oh so brave, when you were running like a bunch of children just a second ago" She says teasingly, from the tree tops

"Don't let her bait you Kimi" Tosen says as I walk back into the graveyard and crack my neck.

"You've dug your grave, girl" I growl as I point my zanpakuto to the tree tops "Come down so I can put you in it"

"Cocky, I hate it" She says as I swing my bloody blade down "I'll rip all the souls in you our in one shot"

I smirk as I hear the sound again, and the arrow flies, sparking with pure spiritual energy.

A wall of blood rises up in front of me, blocking it as the quincy leaps down in front of me, dressed like an english priest, in white and blue robes with a hood. She grins, her teeth looking too perfect. Her black hair hangs over her face wildly.

And she has at least seven blades on her belt.

"Ahhhh, that's interesting, are you a seated one then?" She asks, smiling just like kotei as I keep my blade raised towards her

"She should be but" Tosen sighs "Well I think they're making sure she isn't a fluke"

"Eh, well she and you are dead' She says, drawing one of the blades, as that same blue light runs down it.

She rushes me, I swing my dripping blade down. Her fire clashes with my blood, boiling, burning and rolling against each other, bathing us in blue and red light as her Crucifix shaped necklace blows wildly, and I see that her face is marred by a single scar, straight down the middle.

A blow that should've been a killer.

I frown as she cackles, the light in her stolen sword turning red as the blade cracks.

I shove her away, and she tosses it at me.

It explodes, taking a good bit of the graveyard with it.

Without any hesitation I step to her as Tosen joins my side.

Sense leaves me, and I rush her, gathering all the blood in my blade as I scream in fury.

She fires, a lance flying towards me.

I cut down, and for a moment feel the force behind it before I finish my swing.

There's an almighty bang, like cannon fire. Dust, burning ash, sparkles of Reiyoku and the smell of burnt blood fill the air around me.

And then I hear clapping

"Fantastic!" She shouts happily "You've gotten farther than another of your heretical kin, monster"

"Die" I hiss as she grins an raises the rifle at me again

"Sorry, Soul eater, but this grave is for you" She purrs happily

Blood drips from the trees, as I fall into my "proper" stance

"Getting serious? or just scared?" she asks

Which is why I was wondering why it was taking us so long to deal with a hollow we caught out by its lonesome, 2 on 1.

I mean, I guess there are some potentially good reasons. We might have wanted to play around a bit, try some things out. We might just be jobbing it on purpose to avoid standing out too much. It just seemed odd that we were struggling with the guy and no mention of that was made in the narrative and nothing seemed odd about that in character to Kimi.

Btw, was it the snake, the rat or both of them that were able to stealth their reiatsu? IIRC that is an irregular ability and worthy of note.

It could've fought for awhile. it but was a coward and fled when you took away one of its attacks

Also, it wasn't really struggling. It was just tougher than average and by tough, I mean sturdy
Notice where it was hanging out. A graveyard, it wasn't hunting for souls.

The only hit you took from it were the chains and the small cut from the nail. Guy was just resilient. so he took more of a beating.

Notice how when Kimi got caught in the chains, her reaction was to smile and call it an idiot.
