“Well of course we should share body heat.” Keira says as she casually throws off her shirt. “I heard the mainland has different weather, but it does rain there, right?”

“Of course!” You laugh a little louder than you intend as you keep your eyes focused on a shelf. You let out all your pokemon to keep yourself busy while she shimmies out of her skirt.

She takes out her Tropius and lays down next. She opens the towel you’ll be sharing as a blanket. “Come on! You’re shivering.”

You can’t really see her face in the dark, but you feel like her eyes are really focused on a single area.

You lay down under the blanket, then take your clothes off. Keira giggles at your shyness. The size of the towel means the two of you are very close.

Just as you’re feeling that this won’t be so awkward, she pushes tightly against you. Some parts freezingly cold, some parts heavenly warm.

Keira tells you about the snow on some of the mountains of the region. Eelilee is the one she grew up on, near the base. But the priestly class goes higher up on it than anyone else. The higher your position, the higher you go up.

“Snow is great! You’ll love it.”

You laugh, less awkwardly this time. “We have snow where I come from, too.”

“Oh...” she sounds almost disappointed, like she was going to impress you.

“What’s a Wailord’s favorite TV show?”

She looks at you blankly.

“Whale of Fortune!”

“...Oh! Television program!” She presses her freezing nose into your chest, causing you to make an embarrassing high pitched noise. That makes her giggle and snort. You’re just concentrating on keeping your lower half away from her. As you move away, she moves closer.

“I’m cold.“ She pulls you back. “It’s okay to touch me. Don’t let what everyone told you weird you out, okay? Just, treat me like everybody else.” Her voice gets quiet as she talks into your chest. “Please.”

“Okay. Then tell me about yourself. What was growing up like?” You do everything you can to avoid poking her as she keeps squirming to get more warmth.

She tells you about growing up in the priestly caste. From the context it doesn’t sound like she’s trapped into her career, but it’s heavily encouraged. She comes from a large family with a lot of sisters. What really stands out is her time with dead people. She’s prepared bodies for the afterlife. That seems unnerving to you, but she doesn’t see anything weird about it.

Working with the soon-to-die is also a part of her duties. She’s watched people die. Again, it’s just a matter of fact to her.

She’s been on Eelilee for almost all of her time alive, living in what sounds like a monkish temple. Her parents sound nice, and they visit a lot, but she doesn’t sound as close to them as she does to some of her teachers.

Her particular temple was segregated, but the rules have lightened up recently. You get the feeling that her being on this journey is still a bit out there for a priestess, though.

She turns around and pulls your arm over her. Her freezing butt presses against you. “Hospice and funerals can burn people out. I’ve seen it happen a lot. Even though we help spirits find their way, it’s not easy sometimes. But that’s not why I left. It was when a teacher of mine passed. She was the best. But she told me she had regrets.”

“What did she do?” The topic is actually helping bring your body under control.

“That’s what I asked. But it wasn’t what she did. It was what she didn’t do. She turned down so many adventures, and trips, and never broke any rules. She told me not to make the same mistakes.”

“She told you to break rules?”

She laughs. It’s a bittersweet laugh this time. “I never broke any rules before that. But before I knew it was causing a lot of trouble. Pranking people mostly. She liked that. Said it caused them to at least have a unique memory they could look back on. When I asked for an exemption to go on a journey, they thought it was a great idea.”

“So why did you want to go on your journey?”

She turns to face you. Her makeup is severely smudged but still obscuring her face. “To live. Life is short, Herb, and it ends really suddenly sometimes.”

Those are eyes that have seen proof of that.

You tell her about how you got into fashion. When you were a little kid, you never really paid attention to it. You got a lot of hand me downs from your sister, including some unisex clothes. As you got older, they got less unisex and more awkward. But you didn’t really notice. You weren’t good at sports, you were good in class but not one of the honor roll leaders, you never really stood out. Until the day you accidentally wore your sister’s girly pants. You didn’t know what made them feminine, or why people tease you. But when you came home in tears, you made it your business to find out.

And what you found fascinated you. The way stitching lines in different places make such a difference. The way colours draw the eye. The way the clothes really do make the man. It was a whole new world.

You hum her a little tune from a gameshow since it’s the only thing that comes to mind, and she quickly starts drooping her eyes. She crawls over to behind your neck to get the excess heat from that, and you feel her relax to sleep.

“You’re going to make a great dad someday. You have the aura for it.” Keira whispers and she steals your arm back.

“Thanks.” You say again.
