You are Lara Abbott, a human commoner, and ever since you were a kid, you've wanted to go on a big adventure. Problem being, you have very few skills. Basically none actually... But not too long ago, you found a magic guitar on the body of a dead gypsy. The guitar essentially plays itself, all you have to do is hit the strings. Using this magic guitar you think you may be able to team up with some real adventurers under the guise of being a bard.

And where else to find a ragtag group of adventurers than a tavern? But which one to hit?

> The Classic Mug (Your average run of mill tavern)
> The Dark Corner (Popular with brooding loners who have mysterious pasts.)
> The Vile Crook (A hotspot for illegal activities)
> The Priest's Chalice (Doesn't actually serve alcohol, hear the coffee's good)

You think the Guitar might be harder to break than usual, you've already dropped it quite a few times by accident. Problem is, you don't actually want to test it too much, because if you break it, your days as a "bard" are over.

So, what's your story? What brings you out to this part of the Empire?

"I am Al'Dox'ra'nius'glf, speaker of the cube. Who I was before I submitted myself to the cube is irrelevant. I interpret the will of the cube. The cube is not truly a cube at all, for it's corners are rounded. So says the cube. As for what I am doing here. I am here because the cube demands it, and have been for several days, looking for someone to share in a holy crusade. The time, those involved and the whereabouts of this crusade still elude me however. It might even involve you."

Would this mean I'd need to submit to the cube? If so I need to know what I'm submitting myself to. What's the deal with this cube?

"Submission to the cube is not required, nor entirely possible for the average person. It is however very liberating. I allowed myself to be absolved of all my old sins, possessions, emotions names and even my own head. The removal process was painful, but definitely worth it."

Oh... so uh... about that crusade thing, I was wondering if you wanted to travel with me on an adventure.

"I'm afraid young one that the choice is not mine. The answer will be written into the very fabric of time and space themse...

"I should for-warn you that despite my religious inclination, I lack the ability to mend wounds. I am proficient in weaving the very essence of death in order to harm my enemies however."

Wait a minute, are you evil?

You and your new found companion, Al, get up and look around the tavern for someone else to join your party.

The two of you decide on the pair of masked bird creatures that seem to be bickering. As you approach they jump in fear, both reaching for their crossbows, but neither thinking to actually load the things.

"Stand back humans, we have diplomatic immunity! We are on very important mission to see the human king of humans."

You want to respond but you can't actually tell which of them said that, considering that they are both wearing masks.

It just so happens that I do in fact know the human king of humans.

"What luck!"
"I told you that noble humans prefer 'the coffee' to 'the booze'!"
"I am Solid Strix"
"And I am Liquid Strix"

Okay I'm gonna need you guys to point at yourselves so I can actually tell who's who.

"Pointing a crossbow at oneself would be very dangerous human."
"I agree."

You can just put the crossbow down.

"And leave ourselves defenseless in this den of human filth?"
"No offense"
"Oh yes, no offense."

Well, since you introduced yourself, I should do the same. I am Lara Abbott, friend of the king, and I could even take you to him. First however, I'd need your help on an adventure."

"What adventure?"
"And what exactly are your skillsets?"
"Oh, good question brother."

My friend here, Al, is a cleric of the cube, and I am a bard. As for the adventure.

The birds begin to laugh hysterically. Every time they start to calm down one of them repeats the word "bard" and they begin to laugh again. Even Al lets out a snort. Putting a hand under their masks to wipe away tears presumably, the Strix brothers regain composure.

"We are both fighters, but we are not very tanky."
"Low pain tolerance"
"And what of the adventure?"

"hmmmmmm"

"We will accompany you... for now. But be warned, should you cross us, we will skewer you. Do you understand human?" The brothers say in unison.

Might as well start with the one that was specified if were gonna hit them all anyways.

The Strix brothers look eager to go, but you tell them that you aren't quite ready to go just yet.

You decide to head over to the cocky looking girl. You aren't very familiar with magic, but you are familiar with injuries, and what she's got in her hands looks a lot like what local preachers would do to mend some of your injuries.

You approach her as she finishes telling a story about how she once killed a wild boar with nothing but her hands on a dare. As her company seems to leave, you try to talk to her.

Hello, I'm Lara Abbott, I'm looking for someone to share in an adventure.

She stares you down a bit, then your group.

"Yeah no. The only one of you who looks like they could last even a day fighting monsters is the block headed guy, who I frankly find very off putting. You couldn't pay me enough to work for your little band."

"Actually we aren't being paid at all." Al interjects.

Please, we could really use a healer!

"Listen kiddo, all parties need a healer, I can have my pick of any group I want, you on the other hand, have very little choice in the matter, so unless you prove to me you'd be a worthy investment, you guys are out of luck."

"Now hold on there you little punk. What are you getting at? I'm not too scared to join your group, I'm just waiting around for a better one to come along."

A likely story, and where IS this other group?

You point through the now mostly empty tavern.

And to think, I thought I was going to write songs about the talented and brave... uh...

"Keya, Keya Fox-Chaser."

Alas, it seems I'll need to reword my song, to be about Keya the coward..."

"Oh god... alliteration... it'll be a hit" The oracle seems panicked.

"You can't write that song."

Watch me.

"No, you can't write it, because it's not true. Keya Fox-Chaser NEVER backs down from a challenge, and isn't afraid of anything! Point me towards your enemies bard, so that I may... well, ideally I'd actually be more in the back, tending to wounds, but that just makes me compassionate, not cowardly."

"I expect to have a share of the treasure as well, exposure is nice and all, but it doesn't pay the bills. You understand?"

Well I can't exactly go about stringing you all along for free, there's probably like a law against that or something.

"It's a crusade!" Declares Al

"It's a secret!" screech the two brothers

"It's a chance to show the world how truly blessed it is to have me in it." adds Keya.

It's sort of complicated.

"Sounds exciting! I can help with healing!"

"Sorry we already got a healer, plus we already got a cleric, so you can hit the road, stranger." Keya cuts her off.

Hey, I make the calls around here.

You face the glaring party, who await a valid expression of leadership. You're prepared for this moment.

You try to grab your guitar off your back, but you can't quite reach it. You keep trying to grab it, getting frustrated. You're nervous. You're sweating. The stares from your party just make things worse. They're not even laughing at you, they look almost more concerned... like they pity you. You just can't reach this fucking guitar. You reach so far behind your back, you think you pull something in your arm. In you pain you fall over, spilling your food rations out of your pockets. You start crying while trying to fit them back in. You try to tell them that you're the only reason they are in a party to begin with, but it comes out rather entitled sounding, and hardly makes up for... what ever display you just put on...

The shaman's smile has long faded, and she awkwardly leaves the building. The rest of your party helps you to your feet. One of the twins offers your a handkerchief to wipe your tears with. Al pats you on the head.

"All in favor of me as the new leader" asks Keya.

Everyone raises their hands.

"Alright, as the new leader, I ask Lara to direct us to our goal."

The illusions are spreading, your companions begin to shake, not a single one manages to remain standing, falling to their knees. Keya is staring blankly, drooling a little. Behind you, the illusionist appears in a cloud of smoke.

"Nothing personal, kid." he laughs.

You grab your guitar from your back and dramatically swipe the chords with all your might. The illusions shatter like glass and your companions quickly get to their feet, trying to figure out what just happened.

"MY ILLUSIONS? WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY ILLUSIONS?!" he yells at you, grabbing you by your collar.

A bolt pierces his hand, and he screams in agony as both the Strix brothers reload their crossbows, one having hit the man, the other having missed.

Your party members all crack their knuckles, surrounding the illusionist.

"Lara, we can handle this guy, you go find us another battle brother or whatever." Keya calls to you.

But who will you go for?

He just turns his head to look at you, before returning his attention back to his drink. He doesn't really drink it, but he holds it up to where his mouth should be, and just sort of holds it there.

I'm... uh. Lara Abbott.

"K." he responds, coldly.

He's a riddle wrapped inside of an enigma. This is going to be a tough one to recruit.

Would you be willing to join me on my quest?

"K."

Oh... Uh, what shall I call you sir knight?"

He shrugs as he pours his drink through the eyeholes of his armor.

I will call you Bananaman

As Bananaman goes to join the rest of your party, you make your way to the woman sitting in the darkest corner of the room.

She scoffs at you before you even say anything.

I'm Lara Abbott, I'm putting together a group of adventurers.

"I work better alone. Companionship is a luxury people like me can't afford." she says, staring off into the distance, as if remembering a time long lost.

So are you like, a fighter.... or

"I'm a killer, kid. Everyone around me winds up dead sooner or later."

I mean, we have a healer, so you don't really have to worry about us getting hurt, though it's very kind of you to worry.

"It's better this way kid. Trust me."

No, I'm like, 90% sure we'd be safer with someone who actually knew how to fight was actually with us, rather than, not with us.

"Ok, fine, whatever, but if I'm going to be part of this little crew, I retain the right to disobey any and all orders, at any given time. My name is Auhw, by the way."

DEAL!

You go to shake Auhw's hand, but struggle to find something that wouldn't hurt like hell to hold.

How about a hug instead?

She gives you a look of disdain. Probably for the best, hugs would probably hurt more than the handshake would have.

You bring Auhw to the rest of the party, laughing at the fact Auhw's deal means nothing to you, as you aren't even in charge.

The party is currently gathered around the now unconscious illusionist. They seem to be dividing up loot.

Keya brings you towards a small pile of items on the floor. "Since you saved us from the Illusionist, we -"

"I" Al corrects

"Al thought you should get first of the loot." Keya finishes.

It's pretty much all improvised. I've got a big list of potential characters that I am drawing from, but the list itself is either two words, like "Arrogant Oracle" and "Paranoid Harpy" or just an image, like Bananaman and Auwh were.

I also have a few things drawn from old dnd campaigns, but so far the that's just "The Naked Mage"

I'm glad people are enjoying it.

Will the Orb of Confusion help us hug her?

I would usually say Book of Regeneration but we have a healer while having no mage or illusionist. Perhaps the Orb of Confusion will be more potent in our adventure? Of course the two potions of read animal minds may be a godsend at times.

"You know, there are fae in these woods. I would not recommend crossing one, on any circumstances."

"Silly human, fae aren't real." a brother says nervously
"Are they?" asks the other.

"Of course they are, but it's unlikely we will encounter any. Just thought I'd issue a warning in case. Better safe than sorry" Al reassures.

As party enters the woods, they are taken completely off guard by the presence of a very large carnival. There don't seem to be any people in sight other than those running the various booths and stalls.

You aren't really sure what to make of it, but Keya, Al and Bananaman seem eager to check it out.

The brothers on the other hand are hesitant.
"Are you sure it's a fae trick brother."
"How can it not be, it's a fair, that's only one letter off of 'fairy'."
"It does look fun though..."

"You guys go on ahead, call if there's danger. I'm gonna have a smoke." Auhw says, waving you onwards.

The party decides to meet up again after about an hour or so. Until then you decide to:

For the sake of moving things along, I think I'm gonna do carnival games, since it was at 3 before a vote was changed. Though we may still have a chance to do other things too.

You follow Keya who excitedly rushes towards a ring toss game. Next to the game booths is a very clear and legible sign that flashes different colors as if to draw attention with the words.

NO CHEATING. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. OR ELSE.

"Back home, I used to win these things, they're really easy once you know the trick." She says. as she lays a few silver on the counter. A lanky man in dirty clothes hands her 5 rings. She misses every single one. Slams another few coins on the table. This continues for some time.

Taking a look at the various prizes, a few catch your eye.

From the 1 ring prizes:
- A key chain

From the 2 ring prizes:
- Large and fluffy stuffed animals

From the 3 ring prizes:
- Wand of Foul Play (polymorph: Chicken)
- Shield of Elemental Resistance
- Boots of speed

From the 5 ring prizes:
- Amulet of Infinite Wishes
- A REALLY big stuffed animal

You currently have 11 gold to your name, it costs 5 silver, (half a gold) for 5 rings.
Tossing a ring is a 1d20 roll. The same person rolling multiple times is allowed, so long as it's one dice per post. Just to make things easier for me to follow.

Will you play a game?

What's that?

"I mean, once you can have literally anything you want, where's the fun? Where's the challenge? It kinda makes life meaningless... you know?"

I never, uh, really thought about it that way. I guess I'll have a go.

You walk over to Keya and leave a keychain on the counter next to her.

"Come here to rub it in my face huh?" she says as she misses another ring.

Nah, I don't really think it's that big a deal. It's not that hard.

Keya gives you her worst glare yet.

Thing is, this games totally rigged, it's literally impossible to get more than 1 ring on. I kinda wish I had the guts to cheat the dirty scammers, now THAT would be impressive.

A grin forms on Keya's face.

"Get that lyricist mind of yours warmed up Lara, I'm about to give you something to sing about."

Keya puts another 5 silver on the table. Grabs her first ring and does a small flick of the wrist, whispering what might be an incantation under her breath.

She gets one in.
And another
And another.
ANOTHER!
And as the last one is about to make it, it curves away, strangely. Keya looks at her own hands, confused for a moment, but shrugs it off.

"Well look what we have here! Big winner! We haven't had a 4 time prize winner in a very long time... Now, normally, that means you can have two prizes from the 3 ring prizes, or three prizes from the 2 rings, or four keychains.

There, is, however, always.... The mystery box." He says with smile.

"I'll take it!" She says with a grin.

"An excellent choice." he says, as he hands over a large brown box with a question mark on it.

"Come on Lara! Let's go show the others!" Keya says as she puts the keychain you gave her on her necklace. She's beaming... like... literally, you're pretty sure it's an oracle thing.

Just follow the sound! Follow the sound of my guitar -

You wander through the mist and find yourself outside the carnival, it's bright out again. Standing in front of you is Auwh. "Change your mind about the carnival?"

What are you talking about?

"I haven't even had enough time to light a cigarette yet." She explains.

Before you can answer, you hear a scream coming from the carnival, which looks exactly like it did when you entered. Bright, colorful, no mist.

You and Auwh rush into action, following the sound of the screams into the center of the carnival, a large area for eating. You spot Bananaman buying some chocolate covered bananas. He doesn't seem to have noticed the screams, you, or generally anything about the current situation.

On the ground in front of you, you see the mystery box. the inside holds two eyeballs.

A trail of blood a set of human foot prints, as well as tiny footprints leads deeper into the carnival.

You eventually follow them to Keya, you both recoil in disgust as she turns to face you, her eyes have been replaced by buttons and she's coughing up cotton.

"There was something in the box... it had a knife." She tries to explain through tears, somehow still dripping through the buttons.

The light begins to dim again. The mist returns. You completely lose your sight in seconds. You struggle to try and grab hold of Keya, but the mist fades as quickly as it came, and there's no sign of Keya, the box, or a struggle anywhere.

It doesn't take long for Al and the brothers to come running towards you guys. The brothers looking... different than usual for sure, giggling to themselves.

"We had hilarious misadventures of a magical variety!"
"We heard screams and assumed there was more fun to be had here!"

Al also makes his way over rather quickly. Unchanged in any way from when you last saw him. Though it can be hard to tell on a man without a face

As a group you wave to Bananaman, completely oblivious to all of you. You wind up needing to physically drag him to the rest of the group. He doesn't seem too bothered.

Okay team, our leader has been assaulted and kidnapped, we need to do something about it.

"Like vote for a new leader" asks Auwh, laughing.

"Oh sorry, too soon? Look Lara, I'm pretty sure Keya is dead. Where the hell would we even look for her? There's no more trail, there's no nothing. Our only real option here is to kill everyone here and burn the carnival to the ground. You know, vengeance and stuff."

"That doesn't seem like the best decision."
"Here here." chime in the brothers.

"The cube is silent on the subject."

The party all turn to you for leadership...

Oh shit. Overthought theory ahead, but considering the birds went to the mirrors and got distorted, Auwh went for a smoke and there was a ton of mist, maybe what they did makes it the most literal version, so Keya should be somewhere by the old games we were playing...

You and the party make your way through the fair, mostly heading towards the games, playing guitar and calling out her name. As you make it to the ring toss you spot the man who runs it.

Sir, have you seen my friend around? Please, tell us where she is. It's my fault, I'm the one who convinced her to cheat. I'm so sorry.

"Well that ain't really my problem kid. We take our games very seriously here."

before you can respond something catches your eye. Light reflecting off a keychain, wrapped around the neck of a stuffed fox that looks just like Keya... well... if Keya had a bunch of fox features, like a tail and ears.... and put on a few pounds... and her head was disproportionately large as compared to her bo- IT'S NOT IMPORTANT.

That's her. You're sure of it.

You take your first throw, and get it dead on.

Before you take your second you decide to ask the man running the game.

What are the rules exactly?

"Well basically, you have to toss the ring, using your body, to try and land it on one of these here pegs." he says, gesturing vaguely.

"but, basically, you want to get them all on the same peg, so once you've got one on, you gotta go for that one again. Other than that it's pretty simple. Stay behind the counter at all times, no magic, and no substituting throwers part way through."

You hapharzardly throw the rings just to make sure there isn't some weird bullshit in the rules that let's him take your prizes away if you leave half finished. As the final one leaves your hands it lands perfectly.

"Another stuffed animal for the little lady! Or perhaps she'd prefer 2 key chains?"

You begin to shake from pure frustration

"Now, don't tell anybody, but I'll cut you a deal, for being such a great player. I'll give you another animal AND throw in a key chain.

> Stuffed Animal (specify type)
> 2 Keychains
> 1 Key chain, 1 animal

I promise nothing bad will happen if you take the one of each option. I just felt weirdly OCD about having 1 more or less keychains than there are party members.

Looking amongst the prizes, it's hard to tell if they all used to be people, or maybe none of them were...

You decide to go for the only one you can see that looks like it's wearing jewelry, as that necklace seemed to stick with Keya. It's a very adorable polar bear. You also grab a turquoise keychain.

You divide up the keychains among the party. One for everyone (assuming I did my math right.)

"Sure you don't want another game? no? Hope to see you again someday~" the man calls as you walk away. You start to turn back, but the party holds you back.

Once the party leaves the carnival grounds, you take a seat in a field of grass and smile.

"All in favor of reinstating Lara as our leader?" Al asks

Everyone raises their hands and then comes in for a group hug. (Except Auhw, cause that would be painful)

"So I don't want to be the bearer of bad news or anything... but does anyone actually know anything about breaking curses?" Auwh comments."

Oh fuck...

Hope you guys enjoyed, it's probably the most fun I've had running a quest in a long time. Maybe ever.

I definitely plan on continuing this one day (which goes against the entire intention of it being a short one off)

The main issue is that I can't afford to get carried away like this for the next little while, so basically, between university and holidays, it may be a few weeks before I have a chance to continue this. Here's my QM twitter for those interested.

Until then, follow your dreams, and never give up. Especially when it comes to ring toss games.
