“Christians, hasten to help your brothers in the East, for they are being attacked. Arm for the rescue of Jerusalem under your captain Christ. Wear his cross as your badge. If you are killed your sins will be pardoned.”
- Pope Urban II

It is 1095, and the Pope has declared the First Crusade! The Byzantine Emperor called upon Western Christendom for help, and has now been answered. Soon, the noble heroes of the Catholic realms will head towards Anatolia and the Holy Lands to save their eastern brethren.

The Players will take the roles of the leaders of this glorious endeavour. This will be a quest with nation building tendencies. There will be multiple player characters acting at once, hopefully at least somewhat cooperatively.

The game is planned to consist of four Acts:

>Act I: Preparation
Wherein our heroes ready themselves for the ordeals to come with varying degree of success.
>Act II: Pilgrimage
Wherein our heroes attempt to reach the Holy Lands without being shipwrecked, excommunicated, or accidentally starting a war with our Byzantine allies.
>Act III: Crusade
Wherein our heroes battle the heathen hordes of the Seljuks and Fatimids and try to take back the rightful lands of Christendom whilst also surviving.
>Act IV: Spoils
Wherein our heroes negotiate, bargain, plot and bicker like churlish children.

>Random Info

Although starting during Act I will be beneficial, players may join at any point.

Dice rolls are always d100s. 1 and 100 are the only crits.

I will reward role play. Getting into character and saying how you're doing something will always be given slight advantages over simply stating an action. Tactics in battle will be particularly susceptible to this.

Updates by me will likely be approx once a day.

There can only be one King of Jerusalem. You are all competing with each other.

There can only be a King of Jerusalem if the crusade is successful. Don't compete too much.

Act I will begin when we have a few players about to start it with.

Characters are required to be at least somewhat realistic. I reserve the right to veto. If you wish to sign up to the crusade, the pope requires the following information from you.

>Name:
>Country of Origin:
Any Catholic nation that existed in Europe at the time is viable. Very distant countries (eg norway or scotland) may have a harder or more expensive time reaching the holy lands.
>Position:
Who is your character? Likely a noble of some sort. A duke or count? Or perhaps a powerful bishop or wealthy merchant?
>Background:
Just give me a paragraph/few lines (though more if you want). Any fluff you'd like to make up. May have effects upon your start and during the game.
>Colours:
2 colours please, a primary and secondary. Will be used for campaign and battle map purposes.

I will then give you a profile including the following information:

>Army: The soldiers under your command.
Levies: peasants with basic weaponry.
Infantry: properly armed and armoured soldiers
Archers: ranged equivalent of levies
Crossbows: ranged equivalent of infantry
Cavalry: mounted soldiers that can also be fielded as infantry on foot
Knights: superior soldiers made up of highly trained and equipped gentry and nobility, can fight on foot or horseback. Can't be trained out of lower troops (can't train a man's bloodline).
Siege Equipment: catapults, battering rams and siege towers that make capturing castles and cities considerably easier, but are a huge liability if attempting to travel.

>Prestige
your fame and the respect of your peers
>Wealth

>Piety
your standing with the church
>(Imperial) Favour
your standing with the Byzantine Empire
>Morale
your support amongst your followers
>(Combat) Skill

>Oaths
Things you have promised to do or not do. Or that others have promised you.
>Followers
NPCs that are permanently or temporarily accompanying you.

>Background:
Inheriting the title of Duke after his father had died at a respectable age, Karl Herzog II had been an adequate ruler, albeit one slightly mad with power, some might say. Nonetheless, all was well. He respected his people and they did the same. When the crusades were announced, though, Karl seemed to almost be brainwashed by the Pope's words. He truly started believing that they would be doing God's work, that they would be saving The Holy Land. He now leads his crusade with an unforseen religious fervor, ready to spill blood in God's name.

>Name: Michał (Michael) Baldoni

>Country of Origin: Papal State

Any Catholic nation that existed in Europe at the time is viable. Very distant countries (eg norway or scotland) may have a harder or more expensive time reaching the holy lands.

>Position: Michael is well connected weapons merchant who primarily sells Venetian weapons to Tunis, Tunisian olives to Alexandria and Egyptian citrus fruits and raw ore to Venice. He controls a merchant fleet of 5 frigates and 7 gallies, crewed by free men payed a fair wage.

Who is your character? Likely a noble of some sort. A duke or count? Or perhaps a powerful bishop or wealthy merchant?

>Background: Michael is half Polish half Umbrian and was born in the Papal States. His father was a wealthy and powerful papal merchant, but tragically, while young Michael was only 14, died on his largest and costliest venture to date. He left Michael a house heavily in debt. His mother married a wealthy Venetian merchant saving the family from destitution. At 22 Michael, with his stepfather, went out on his first true long distance journey bringing anchovies and silver to Byzantium. Seljuk pirates overwhelmed them, killing his father and taking him for a slave. He convinced the pirates he was worth more to his mother, and was ransomed. Now the young leader of a failing Venetian merchant fleet and the inheritor of his stepfathers remaining estates and debts, the next decade is spent in tireless toil. Eventually Michael became a proficient merchant and leader, growing his fleet from 3 aged ships to its present state of 12.

>Name:
Giacomo Ferrara
>Country of Origin:
Papal States
>Position
Bishop
>Background:
Like many of the ecclesiarchy of Italy, Giacomo is far more political than pious, having had to earn the title through dealings, favors, and maneuverings. Not only are bishops to be spiritual leaders, but in these days and times, also stewards and landholders, governing territories almost like Lords and Nobles. As such he has what amounts to a small fiefdom in Milan, a nice fertail region with rich soil and farmlands. And like Lords and Nobles, he too as allured at the thought of opportunity.

Giacomo is an avid historian, particularly of ancient Rome and the empire. In those days, the Empire maintained itself not through levies and knights sworn to their lords, but by conscripts and legions loyal to the state and the Roman faith as one. This "standing army" was not summoned on the whim of a King, but ever present, disciplined, and trained soldiers whose career was war, fed and armed by the state.

The thought occured to him, what if the practice could be rebuilt? Instead of levies and knights, a proper army, for the Papal states. We were not already using the Swiss soldiers from the Alps as the Papal Guard?

Giacomo wants to put his idea in practice. To create and form a proper military funded by the Papal states, whos soldiers swore fealty not to a castled noble but to the Papal state, incentivized by proper payment from Papal coffers and the promise of the absolution of sins. They wouldn't be forced to return to the fields, but continue to train and hone in their military prowess.

His plan is as follows, obtain a bull from the papacy detailing the absolution of sins for all mercenaries on the crusade, as well as the establishment of a provisional Papal Army. Officers and trainers would be recruited from the Italian condotierri of the city states, from the pikemen in theAlps, from the freikorps in Germany. These would also train raw recruits gathered from common or lowborn individuals. Cooperation between the Papal coffers, italian and venician merchants, and production and gathering of supplies in Italy would be necessary pay and feed for this Papal army.

A bold plan, a grand plan, but for now all of this was simply in Giacomo's head. Now he had to make this idea into reality.

Name: Birinus Percy
Country of Origin: England
Position:
Count of Dorset
Background:
Having risen to the title through natural means, Birinus governs his lands with care and passion. He has a strong friendship with his brother, a bishop, who trying to lecture Birinus into more piety, has set ablaze a raging hatred for sinners and heathen that was laying dormant in Birinus before. Birinus is not extremely pious per se, but his flaming hatred makes him seem as such. However he is cunning and open minded, he would share a meal with a heathen and stab him from behind if it meant a cleaner "battle" than on the field. He is well known for tricking a Jew into giving up his smuggling comrades and then raiding and expelling the local Jewry with effectiveness alongside his brother. While he is an accomplished marksman with the longbow , he lacks much of technique of sword fighting . When the pope's request was heard, he and his brother were among the first to begin preparation for the crusade in England.

Country of Origin: Holy Roman Empire (Duchy of Saxony)
Position: Merchant Prince and Baron of Emsdetten

Background: Eckhard was born into a prominent family whose wealth was gained 300 years before through Charlemagne's conquest of Saxony when your ancestor Tredan Lowth betrayed his king, Widukind and quite literally opened the doors for the armies of God.

Now, three hundred years later, your bumbling idiot of a father has now botched his 4th trade agreement with the Eastern Slavs and is slowly throwing away the family fortune for immediate gains.

Now, more than ever is the time to leave. So Eckhard has head through the grapevine that the Holy Land is seeking men for some great Crusade and what better way to earn your own fortune than as a supply runner or captain of a ship in God's Army.

Colors: Parted per fess azure and vert, cross argent, orle sanguine, hammer proper.

Yes, I'm afraid it's catholics only. The aims of Constantinople and Rome and different enough that players in both camps would cause me all sorts of headaches. This game is firmly about the Rome side of things.

If this runs well I may run a more roman themed game (set a little earlier in history) in the future though, it was a toss up between this and that when I chose what to run.

There is a rather strange lack of nobility going on in this crusade.
>>
>>928184
So a Byzantine noble that's fallen from grace, just in it for the money and the fame is too hard to write in?
I just said from the Byzantine Empire, not loyal to the Byzantine Empire
>>
>>928190
I think there is a nice balance so far. The majority is nobility, two merchants and two clergymen.
>>
>>928192

If there's no connection to the Byzantine Empire, that's merely the place of origin, and you're officially joining the Catholic crusade, then I'll declare it okay.

>>928194

I suppose you're right. Still a long way from the reality of hundreds of nobles, a couple of bishops, one nutty hermit and a couple of genoese merchants who were late as fuck.
>>
>>928197
>officially
What do you mean, officially?
Could I still be an Orthodox noble and join?
>>
>>928197
To better my argument
Orthodox Christians do not deny the Pope's seat, just his primacy over the other Patriarchs
He's considered the Patriarch of Rome and as such, it wouldn't be heretical to follow his word and go into battle
>>
>>928197
Funny thing, i was actually considering making a character very similar to Peter the Hermit, but then the idea of a mad german noble seemed more interesting.
>>
>>928198
I see where you are both coming from.

On the side of OP it'd seem kinda weird for an Orthodox noble to be on the side of Rome. On Anon's side, he's saying that he could BE from the Byzantine Empire but not necessarily side with them, more like a noble who agrees with the cause of a Holy War.

It'd be interesting but still a little out of place.
>>
>>928198

You can be orthodox, yes, but you're 'signed up' to the crusade so to speak. You're part of it, not just some rogue madman carving out his own kingdom coincidentally at the same time. You'll be viewed as a crusader by both the Byzantine Empire (probably negatively if you were once a vassal) and also by the catholic world (also likely slightly negatively for not being catholic). If you're happy with that then go ahead.
>>
>>928208
Sure
I have no issue
Plus, the character has "fallen from grace" so he's not exactly in good terms with Byzantine aristocracy
I'll start writing the character now
>>
>>928197
How prominent would NPC lords and nobles? If at all. I can see how a bit lopsided it is if only the PC nobles are going to be relevant
>>
>>928239

As this is a game, the PCs will of course be the most relevent by far, of course.

I'm writing the ACT I intro at the moment, which should shed some light on this issue though.

>ACT I: Preparation
-Wherein our heroes ready themselves for the ordeals to come with varying degree of success.
The first Act will represent the period from the declaration of the crusade to when it actually departed for the Holy Lands. You have two main aims during this section of the game.

>Strengthen your forces.

>Make sure you have a way to get to the Holy Lands.

The first (and second) Act will be rather short, lasting only a few turns each, but will set you up for success or failure in the third and fourth Acts where most of the action will happen.

Act I will end when the crusade is officially called to depart. At this point, everyone will depart for the Holy Lands by the methods (however lacking) that they have arranged. Anyone who leaves late will take penalties each turn they delay by. During the First Act, nations other than the players will not take any actions.

Each turn there will be some announcements, and then each player may make two actions of their choice. Roll a d100 for each of them. Any action may be boosted by spending a relevant resource (prestige, wealth, piety, favour). Any negotiation between players is a free action.
>Strengthening Your Forces

Strengthening your forces may be done by recruiting troops, training and equipping the ones you already have, or by attempting to gather followers (NPCs). There are two types of follower:

Companions (for example, the PC Birinus Percy's brother) are servants, bodyguards, friends or similar which accompany you and usually give some sort of benefit.

Allies are lesser crusaders. They will bring a chunk of troops with them of one or two types. They will be a part of your forces, but have some will of their own. If they think following someone else is better, they may switch which character they are following. Players may also attempt to steal each other's allies (and later on this will be hugely beneficial).

Allies are -the- quickest way to expand your military power. On the other hand troops you recruit for yourself, although you can gather them less quickly, will never wander off suddenly when you need them most. It's your choice.

You may also attempt to increase your prestige, piety, wealth, combat skill, imperial favour with the byzantines, or the morale of your forces in any way you can think of.

You may also spend prestige, piety or wealth on any other task, in any way you can vaguely justify. Prestige may be spent on anything where you could logically improve the result by taking advantage of your fame, status or reputation. Piety may be spent to get things from or with the help of the church and/or papacy. Wealth I hope is self explanatory.

>Make sure you have a way to get to the Holy Lands.

The land route is to march there, from wherever you're from, through the Byzantine Empire, to Constantinople, and then cross into Anatolia. Crossing the Byzantine Empire safely will also require the expenditure of Imperial Favour, Wealth, or Oaths to the Emperor to help him in Anatolia. Crossing the Byzantine Empire without permission is possible, but perhaps not sensible. Problems with locals in areas you march through are likely. Anatolia has also been overrun by the Turks of the Seljuk Sultunate of Rum, and will not be a friendly place. Cooperation between multiple players will be required to defeat the Sultunate's armies.

The sea route will require you to possess, build or hire ships. You will sail to Athens, and from there on to either Constantinople to join the land route people, or along the south coast of Anatolia to Cyprus (which is byzantine) and Silician Armenia (which is christian but independent). Although this method avoids dealing with the Byzantine Empire (at least mostly), there are instead risks of storms and pirates, and you will still have to deal with locals in the places you stop at. Although you can bypass the difficulties of the Sultunate of Rum, this also means bypassing the chances for glory they will present the players who fight them.
The real crusades were a clusterfuck of mismanagement, terrible public relations, confusion, incompetence and in some cases simple assholery. I intend to give you a similar experience.

>Name
Alexandros Callimachos of Philadelphia
>Country of Origin
Philadelphia, Byzantine Empire
>Position
Patriarch of the almost non-existant Callimachoi family, branch of House Bryennios, no holdings
>Background
After the Turkish conquests of Anatolia, the mighty Metropolis of Philadelphia stayed strong and loyal to the Byzantine Empire, a stout exclave that wouldn't bow down to any Mohammedan. Alexander lived his whole life, with his family, isolated from the rest of the Empire, fighting, riding and learning about philosophy, Christ and history (a subject he really loved). With the meager earnings his father made from a successful trade deal, he sent him to Constantinople in order to become part of the court. After steadily going up the ranks of the military, he had just become a strategos, but after a skirmish with some seljuq brigands made him chase after them against the orders of the other strategoi and falling victim to an ambush, he fell from grace, and was deemed an inexperienced child in the shoes of mighty strategists. He had nowhere to go, so he gathered some pronoia soldiers looking for extra gold, angered Philadelphians and other veterans and became a professional brigand, leading excursions deep inside Seljuq territory in order to make a profit meanwhile learning the lay of the land and the way of the Seljuq horseman. He refined his art of leading, becoming an expert in ambushes, rough terrain, land supply and fort infiltration. Through the years, his band of brigands became an almost professional robber company, with each company seperated in squads that would carry out missions in muslim territories. After hearing of the Patriarch of Rome (called Pope by the latins) calling for an all out war against the Seljuqs and other Saracens, and that anyone could join, Alexandros knew he was ready for the part, not only would he restore his honor to the Byzantines, but he'd make a lot of money on the way

>Army
All brigand companies united for a single mission
Levies: 50 Psiloi and 80 Pronoiars (farmer soldiers)
Infantry: 45 Skutatoi, 20 Varangian veterans (unwanted from the Empire)
Archers: 20 Toxotai, mostly garrisons for the night camps
Cavalry: 150 Brigand Kursores, adept at using spears and charging tactics, really good with composite bow horse archery, matching the skill of a Turcopole, each equipped with a solenarion (bow attachment that enables them to fire darts)
Knights: 20 Brigand Cataphracts with subpar armor than a typical byzantine Cataphract, and 5 Klibanophoroi (Alexander included)
>Siege Equipment
10 Greek Firethrowers

>Prestige
Loved amongst populace for giving them work in a heavily taxed Empire, respected amongst soldiers for never risking their lives and fighting with them
>Wealth
Good amount, enough to supply the brigands and then some, because Seljuq-Byzantine trade is limited, many merchants are putting their trust in Alexander to get many of their products

Petition the younger members of the Apostle Families of Venice for ALLIES to join me on Crusade, bringing part of their family fleets, soldiers and veteran guards. Although I have a relatively small force, I'm gonna spend a point in wealth on NOT more troops, but on a crack commander for hire to help train the men I have already creating a sort of....quality over quantity corps.

Then, before I even THINK of leaving, I am going to sell off MY portion of land and holdings that I would have inherited to a minor noble and gain that wealth back to buy supplies for the journey to where the men speak Italian.

Not great, Alexander's actions costed them the lives of many a Byzantine soldier in that ambush, though only a few people of the court have cordial relations with him, saying "Even Basil II lost against his first war with the Bulgars, but then ended up conquering them, we must not judge a man from one mistake"

The crusade is currently scheduled to leave in FIVE turns time.

Please post your profile with your orders. Please keep this profile up to date each turn, there will only be minor changes so it shouldn't be much work. Please make sure what your orders are is clear. Please remember to roll your dice. See, this is why I wanted everyone to be a catholic and in europe. Your character is already in Anatolia, basically bypassing the first two sections of the game for you. You are also already at war, and have no contact with or connection to the crusade and the Pope.

Would you like to join the discord group? Then maybe we could discuss this and try to find a way that'll keep us both happy. At the moment it'd be awkward at best for me to include you.

Here's how I will "play it out"

A small rap on the door echoes in now my nearly empty room, heralding the sound of only one person that'll make me regret leaving my home.

A small, pale skinned blonde girl of about 11 peeks around the door "Are you really going to leave?" she asks timidly. Eckhard picks her up and kisses her forehead "Yes, little sister. I have to, our father is bankrupting us and this town into oblivion and soon all our lands and titles will be revoked." she looks down at her feet kicking the wood of your bed-frame. "I don't want you to go. You may not come back." you chuckle and say "It isn't like I'm actually gonna be fighting at all, I am gonna be a logistician in whatever army picks me up." Standing up you beckon her out "Now go little one, I have a lot of work to do."

As soon as she leaves, the steward walks in and with a curt and immediate tone he says "Your next appointment, sir."

A small, twiddly man of about 46 with short, twiney brown hair approaches you "I am glad, you'll be joining this Crusade. We God fearing men need to teach these Saracens whose just and righteous on Earth."

"I just need a change of scenery"

He adjusts his collar and proceeds to get down to business
"So, it's 150 ducats for the land and 75 for the land, yes?"

"All in order." as you count the coins.

Thinking to yourself you say "Now I need to find me a commander...."

Bishop Guy Percy (his brother) (no troops, permanent attached)

Birinus Percy having heard the news, has sent his brother ,Guy, to Normandy with diplomatic purposes, hoping for some kind of alliance going into the crusade with the nobles or clergymen of Normandy but mainly attempting to hire or borrow some boats to ferry across the channel.
While his brother is away, Birinus travels to nearby courts and sends message to other, requesting any noble Knights to join his retinue, promising sound tactics and heathen blood to spill for their swords and shields.

Messaging some of my merchant friends to lend me a few ships to get me from Rome to Constantinople

Calling out to any masnadi (small companies of desperate soldiers and bandits in Italy) around the Papal State to join my troops

The city of seven hills, what a graceful city, I thank the Patriarch of Rome for this chance to fight the Mohammedan, though it's a pity I'll have to leave for the seven hills here, to the seven hills there in Constantinople, at least I hope some of the merchants I've befriended to lend me some boats, so that I don't have to go on foot.
Plus, there are many soldiers of fortune here in Italia, many of them don't even need a great pay it will be easy getting more troops for my army, though I don't know how they'll react in fighting for someone who is not a Catholic

1) The Duke calls upon any knightly orders in and around his lands. He beckons them to his army, inviting them to join him in this glorious crusade, in the name of the Lord! If they refuse, he shall question their faith, for no man of God should decline such an offer.

>Background:
Ever since he began preaching the word of God, Arpad has tended to his small village in Western Hungary with dutiful devotion and dedication.

Perhaps he would have spent his entire life this way, were it not for a fateful incident in which this humble man of faith was kicked in the head by a particularly irate mule. Whilst unconscious, Arpad was (supposedly) visited by the Holy Spirit, who commanded him to rally his flock and spread the word of God to unbelievers throughout the land.

For the last few years Arpad has made a name for himself throughout central Europe as a travelling holy man on a donkey preaching the gospel with fiery zeal, who leads a chain of followers from the townships he has visited who have been touched by his faith. Now with the proclamation of the Crusade, Arpad sees what the Lord had begun preparing him for all those years ago, and prepares to lead his devout to the Holy Land.

From atop Brother Horse, his faithful mule companion who had acted as God's messenger in setting him on this path, Arpad surveyed his flock with deep consternation. How would the holy land be liberated with such a pitiful group? Other than the Pentinent, his fifty man elite bodyguard, his followers would do little but cover the holy land in their own blood, not the enemies.

Still, if all they did was form a rampart with their bodies on which Jerusalem's walls may be scaled, it would be enough. But more were needed - more were always needed.

1. Arpad sends the most well spoken of his flock to local nobles, demanding of them either trained sergeants at arms to guide his devout, or a tithe that will contribute towards their journey to the holy land.

2. As Christ banished usurers and moneylenders from his temple, so too shall Arpad. He sends his followers to local parishes and abbeys, where venal and corrupt clergymen have gone unpunished for too long - their wealth must be seized, to be used for a holy purpose in the eyes of God.

1. Giacamo wakes up and steps out onto the abbey balcony overlooking the church vineyard and his winery. Members of the Ecclesiarchy were often patrons of fine wine, and more than just because of the Eucharist. Priests and bishops were human too of course. Although it wouldn't be sensible to just start selling some of his best aged caskets like a wine merchant, he could certainly offer them as an 'indulgence' to the church.

His plans are heavily reliant on support, especially financial and political support, from the church. By offering wine, he could earn some Piety and therefore more influence from Rome to help his plans.

2. The bishop then proceeds to gather the first of his needed soldiers, taking a carriage he rides for the nearest Condotierri mercenary camp. No doubt a great number of these soldiers of fortune were already planned headed east, but the offer of a blessing from a bishop and favor with her holy church might appeal to some. They would be the first on a list of men he was going to recruit.

Pierre stands staring out the balcony of his villa as the contemplates the many things to be done before leaving for the crusades and the very little time he has left to prepare. First things first he thinks, we must inform the King of our intentions and hopefully gain his support. Then we must acquire the men and supplies needs to carry our such an endeavor. Pierre turns and heads to his desk to begin writing a letter to the King.

1. Send a letter to the King of France informing him of my intentions to go on the crusades. Humbly request any men, supplies or coin that he may spare for the cause and the glory of France.

2. Now that the letter to the King is sent Pierre sends for his most trusted servants. Writing a letter for all the lesser nobles in Orleans, Pierre has his servants copy it taking one to each man of proper birth in Orleans informing them of the upcoming crusades and asking them to join the cause. If they can not join they are requested to provide either men, supplies or coin in their absence for the glory of France.

Michael was never a religious man, but this is quickly changing. The crusades being called was a wake up call. Living life for money is not the answer. Selling off all land and luxury assets is the first order of business, the second is to bluster the fleet of ships. A cargo of weapons meant for North Africa becomes the tools of a christian fighting force. Recruiting pious men from all over Italy takes time, but the fire of piety which burns in their hearts makes them worth more than any mercenary. With his fleet expanded and crewed, the only thing left to do is head to Athens to train the men.

Michael's half brother Aleksy comes from Poland to join him with his small band of Polish christian knights. Forbidden from joining the crusade by their paranoid king, they revel at the chance to partake.

(I'd like to spend a wealth on these preparations to improve the results. And hope to gain piety.)

As news of the impending glorious crusade finally reaches me, I think back to an old comrade who I have not spoken to for years. Capello has always been connected to the navy, so hopefully he can help with transportation to the main continent.

As my eyes mist over from thoughts of the past, a desire follows quickly behind the glory days on the field. A day of lost comrades and dirt and blood and tears. I will not be satisfied until the ground is soaked with invader blood. Perhaps one thousand of their lives will be enough.

I'd like to spend prestige on procuring this transportation and possibly him as a follower if hes interested.

>End of Act I Turn 1

No posting till I say post.
>ALEXANDROS COLLIMACHOS OF PHILADELPHIA

With the recent losses in Anatolia to the turkish menace, plus the uncertainty of this new crusade, few merchants are willing to take risks. They are willing to negotiate if properly compensated though. They will only rent out ships to you for 3 gold.

>Add Oath: 3 gold in return for ship passage to Constantinople. (you may spend gold to complete this at any point up to the start of Act II, but are also free to find other means)

Your efforts to recruit troops are lacklustre. Apparently there isn't a massive surplus of bandits around Rome. A few men join you.

>Gain 40 levies.
>Gain 24 archers.

>COUNT BIRINUS PERCY

Your brother Guy has worked wonders for your cause. He has managed to secure the help of the Bishop of Caen who not only has the connections to arrange travel across the channel when you depart, but also promises to join you along with his soldiers when you arrive.

>Gain Follower: Bishop Guillaume of Caen (ally, 200 levies/100 infantry, skill 3)
>No need to worry about getting across the English Channel during Act II.

Your own efforts, although less successful, still bring results. You persuade several knights to join you in your holy mission.

>Gain 20 knights.

>ECKHARD VON GUELDERS

You find and hire an experienced military man, a minor knight who has fought against the heathens of eastern europe for many years. He promises to get your troops whipped into shape and advise you on any military matters. He brings a few companions with him.

>Gain Follower: Rudolf von Magdeburg (companion, lieutenant, skill 6)
>+5 knights.
>-1 Wealth

You look to sell your land. Unfortunately, a lot of people are leaving for crusade and thinking the same, so the value of land has decreased. You get a lower price than you hoped for your estates.

>+1 Wealth
>>
>>929959

>PATRICIAN ELECT CONRAD DODONI

You begin the search for allies. It doesn't go well. Many of the merchant houses of Venice are concerned how war may affect trade. Money, ships and men are all being hoarded. The only potential ally you find is a band of merchant guards, usually employed to guard caravans and trade vessels. They demand payment to join you.

>Choose one of the following:
>-1 Wealth, gain Follower Marco Tiolo (ally, 100 infantry, skill 5)
>no effect

Your messages to the Fatimids get you a sarcastic reply. The Caliphate fully intends to take back its land in the Levant, and will do so without Christian help. The Crusader Armies are also not welcome in their land, which rightfully includes, of course, Jerusalem.

>PETER D'ARGENCOURT

Your messages to Normandy result in little help. It is a long way down to Italy after all. Perhaps the family at home isn't so well off as they were when you last visited? Some troops come down to join you though.

>+38 Infantry

Your men raid a muslim village in southern Italy. It isn't really a battle, the opposition having no real defence. Only an odd few of your men were killed or injured, and the rest are rather happy to be given the chance to loot the place.

>Gain 1 Morale.
>-8 levies

>DUKE KARL HERZOG II

Your efforts to draw local knights aren't terribly successful. Perhaps you came across a little too aggressive with the questioning of faith thing? Some knights join you though.

>+12 knights

On the other hand, your efforts to attract the common man meet with great success, and scores of them flock to your banner, eager for crusade.

>+100 levies
>+68 archers
>BISHOP ESTEBAN

You give a sermon to the masses, asking for godly men to join you on crusade. They live up to your hopes, and your forces swell with recruits.

>+120 levies
>+56 archers

Your search for funds goes less well. Few nobles seem keen to see their money disappear off into distant lands fighting heathens when there are heathens a few miles south right here at home. If you got your family to help put pressure on their peers you might be able to drum up some funds, still.

>Choose one of the following:
>+1 Wealth, -1 Prestige

ARPAD THE HOLY

The nobles are not at all impressed with being told to give their soldiers and wealth to some rabble-rousing peasant. Many of them demand your mob stay off their lands. One, however, is willing to work with you should you help him in a disagreement with a local monastery. He believes as a man of faith you'll better be able to persuade them of his way of thinking.

>Choose one of the following:
>lose 1 piety, gain 50 infantry.
>no effect

Unlike the local nobility, many of the local clergy seem less able or willing to stand up to the righteous fervour of your followers. Local churches and shrines are liberated of their hoarded wealth, which ends up in your hands to be better used to further god's work.

>Gain 2 wealth.

>GIACOMO FERRARA

Your donations of wine are appreciated of course. Perhaps too much. It seems they aren't willing to back you so heavily without even further enticements. The sort of quantities these men can drink would put a significant dent into your assets.

>Choose one of the following:
>Lose 1 Wealth, gain 1 Piety
>No effect

You have rather more success in enlisting soldiers. A local condotierri camp provides the men, and your actions provide the convincing they need to get some of them on side. A group of experienced men join up with your forces.

>Gain 62 infantry.

>DUKE PIERRE OF ORLEANS

The King sends back a letter wishing you great success, and asking that you uphold the honour of France in the eyes of the world. He also sends you funds with which to further your campaign.

>Gain 1 Wealth

In your efforts to gain support from the other nobility, one of your fellow dukes sends you a letter. He says that his son has caused some upset at court and fallen out of favour with the King. Being close to the King, he asks that you intercede on his behalf and sort things out for the sake of both the youth and his family. He adds that he has no doubt his son would join you in return for your help.

EZEKIEL, THE GLASSBREAKER

Their oaths are one thing, but your men are, after all, mostly criminals of various kinds. Discipline isn't something they're used to yet. A brawl breaks out during one of your training sessions, and by the time you break it up several men have been killed.

>Lose 6 levies, lose 3 archers, lose 1 Morale

Somewhat related to that issue, few people seem to be eager to share a ship with your band of ruffians. For the good of the crusade some of the clergy are willing to help you out, but others are still dubious about whether you and your band can be trusted.

>Add Oath: 3 Piety in return for ship passage to Constantinople. (you may spend gold to complete this at any point up to the start of Act II, but are also free to find other means)

SIR STEPHEN SZUR

You work to get some local horsemen on side. The people of Hungary still remember their Magyar heritage, and some fine light cavalry and mounted archers join your forces.

>Gain 47 Cavalry

You ask for money from your liege (the King of Hungary?). He sends you his best wishes and his hopes that you will advance the cause of Christendom.

>Gain 1 Wealth.

AUSTINU CAVALLO

You get in contact with your old friend, Capello. Unfortunately, it turns out he has huge debt problems, and his family is basically bankrupt. He says he would like to help you, but can't possibly do so without huge amounts of help from you first. As an old friend, not doing this would not reflect well upon you.

>Choose one of the following:
>Gain Oath: 2 gold to help out Capello (can be completed any time before leaving for the crusades)
>Lose 1 Prestige

Although he can't help you directly, by using his and your own connections you manage to sort some transport. Ships are ready to carry you when you want to set out, although procuring this has required calling in numerous favours.

>Lose 1 Prestige
>You may travel by ship to Italy or Greece/Albania when you leave.

>>
>>930037

Aha, there's a point I should make to everyone here. If I put something like this:

>gain Follower: Marco Tiolo (ally, 100 infantry, skill 5)

Then any follower listed as an ally keeps their men, leave the bit in the bracket intact in your profile please. Do not add these men to your personal total. After all, if they leave you, I need to know who's going with them. Your Follower section in your profile should end up looking like this, basically:

>Followers: Marco Tiolo (ally, 100 infantry, skill 5)

Anything else, like soldiers listed in any other way, wealth, prestige, whatever, just add or subtract from your numbers.

If you've secured transport of some kind, it might be worth listing that too at the end of your profile. I didn't think about that before I designed the profiles, so we'll just have to make do.

Well done Dodoni for illustrating my point.

You have to start somewhere Pierre thinks to himself as he decides to go speak with the King on the Guy of Dijon and his families behalf. Pierre personally travels to Paris and speaks with the King asking him to give the young man and his family another chance. Pierre informs the King he is taking him along to the crusades and will either turn him into a proper knight or leave him in the holy land.

1. Deciding to take advantage of his time in Paris, Pierre decides to go out and meet with the local Nobles informing them of his intent to bring glory to France by fighting in the crusades. Pierre begins seeking their support either through joining him and the cause or offering money or troops. Inform the nobles that I have personally spoken with the King about the upcoming crusades and he has wished great success in bringing honor to France in hopes of enticing them to join and maybe gaining more prestige among the nobles.

Use a wealth to entice them further if need be.

2. Being the youngest son of a youngest son does have a few benefits. Pierre has many older brothers, uncles, cousins and nephews most of which have not met with great success and while none have gained the personal fame on the battlefield some have used the fact that they are descended from Charlemagne to great success. In his ever evolving search for more allies Pierre sends word to his family members asking them to join him in the crusades to bring even greater glory to France and their family name.

Michal know that he has one chance before he leaves for Venice. He requests to see the Pope. As a participant in the Pope's call to arms, he hopes he is important enough to him to have it granted. If his audience granted he will make an oath to provide the church with trade connections, asking only two things in return, to receive the Popes blessing, and that the Pope administer to him the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation personally.

Regardless of the Pope's decision, it's time to uproot from Rome and travel to Venice. But before going he instructs his men in Venice to begin buying many sea snails to be milked for Tyrian purple. He hopes the process will be sorted out and streamlined by the time he arrives, but he can only trust his men to do their best.

1. Giacomo's strategy involves the usage of lands in Milan, to provide supplies for a campaign in the Holy Land. He is a Bishop, not a noble. . .complicated as it is the true legal extent of his land is this abbey and the vineyard, if it can be even called mine and not the holy church's.

Still, that does not mean a bishop is without influence. These lands will need to continue to be cultivated, even as a campaign against the holy land is carried out and a new Papal army formed. If the other bishops want more wine, I must insist upon the. . .requisition of certain other vineyards by nearby landholders for the holy church. Few men, even money oriented men, can deny a strong demand by the Holy Church, the pious might fear for their soul, the greedy might fear for their connections if they were branded as one who would not give to the holiest of establishments.

More than just the vineyards, the farms will be needed to produce food. It's time for the Papal state to start 'protecting' the land, like the good stewards God has determined us to be. I will use my connections to form this papal bull on the requisitioning of fertile lands in Milan for the Holy Land campaign, under my direction of course.

2. The Condotierri are but one mercenary group I wish to draw experience from. I now look north to the Swiss Alps, where the Pope himself is oft to draw his very own guard. Their reputation as pikemen and halberdiers will do well. I shall send letters to recruit them, those mercenaries are familiar with working for the Holy Church.

I am adding a new category under the '>Army' section of your profiles, called 'Warships'. Rather than transportation (which is seperate) these represent combat vessels. They will protect your troops during sea travel.

They will not be able to act independantly of your army, so if you travel inland they will have to be left at wherever you disembarked. However, you may return to where you disembarked and take ship again, at which point they will rejoin you.

I am aware they have limited use as a result, but this game is not intended to have much of a naval focus, so this is the compromise I have decided upon.

I'll repeat again, getting a load of warships does not mean your men can all sail in them. Any attempt to transport your whole army with them later will result in hilarity for everyone else and misery for you.

Birinus, happy with his letters and the knights he has recruited so far, arranges dinner with the ruler of Oxford, a good acquaintance and fellow norman that would be a worth while addition to Birinus's band. If the ruler is somehow unfit or unable to join Birinus, Birinus prepares himself with a counter proposal, asking the soldiers of Oxford that he may lead himself.

You may join. Post up a character.

Warships would be handy if you were attempting to attack one of the places you listed, though it could be done without them potentially. Naval combat isn't really meant to be a big part of the game.

We'll see how long peace with the Fatimids lasts. Competing claims for Jerusalem might cause some tension with the crusaders.

The sun rises, it is another day, and The Duke's banner billows in the wind, standing proudly atop his castle, overviewing the land.
Glory.
Glory and power await.

1) The Duke organizes raids on many jewish villages in the Rhineland. It will serve as training for his men, but also as a way of gaining wealth. He instructs his men to loot, pillage, and take as many prisoners as possible. Those prisoners will later be held for ransom or, if nobody pays, sold as slaves.

2) The Duke, with the help of some trusted friends and nobles, seeks the best generals and trainers for his rapidly-growing army. After all, you cannot expect to win a war with brute strenght alone, because the enemy will adapt and drive you into the mud. (I spend 1 Prestige for this roll)

Writing in flavor text now.

Counting the coins you received from the small land baron, you can rest slightly easier knowing that you in essence, broke even and gained back what you spent, not necessarily a bad thing.

Overlooking the hills, you see six heavily clad horsemen being led by a large, imposing looking man leading them, flying the unmistakable red castle and green woman of Magdeburg.

When the men finally arrive before you, the leader dismounts and removes his helmet to reveal a man who has obviously seen his fair share of battle. A large scar cutting the left side of his already sharp cheeks gives him the distinctive look of an old falcon.

He stands firmly, his sword between his hands "I heard you needed a commander. Rudolf's the name, I come to you in the hopes of offering my services and to make a name of myself."

You extend your hands out to him "I welcome any good commander, but your name and sigil precede you, so no introductions or courtesies are in order. You are most welcome!"

Early the next morning, you awake to the regular camp sounds: men stirring and starting fires, women getting ready to make the morning's breakfast, priests giving their blessings and all manners of quiet yet loud goings on. Today, is the day, you make a name for yourself. On this morning, you become a new man, you feel God will bless your journey and guide your hand to fortune, fame and a new beginning.

>PATRICIAN ELECT CONRAD DODONI

You petition the Patrician for ships. You pull out all the stops, bargaining not just as an individual, but using all the influence you can gather from past services and by persuading other family members to help you. Although initially a little reluctant, he eventually agrees, and gives you usage to a significant number of vessels.

>Lose 1 Prestige
>Add 3 Warships.

The lure of wealth is obviously effective around Venice's seedier areas, of which Tiolo seems to be experienced. He returns to you without any of the money you let him use for the purpose, but with the services of several extra vessels for your fleet.

>Lose 1 Wealth
>Add 4 Warships

(also please see the note I left about your follower in the post just a bit below your turn post)

>ALEXANROS CALLIMACHOS OF PHILADELPHIA

In your search for an engineer you find a fellow Greek, who had travelled to Rome some years ago as the Turks overran his home in the heartlands of Anatolia. He seems to be a talented and learned man, employed in the past by the Byzantine military to construct siege weaponry and fortifications. He is happy to join you, and doesn't even demand particularly high wages.

>Gain Follower: Pregarius of Caesarea (companion, siege engineer)

Your attempt to gather troops further north is far more effective than it was around Rome. Evidently there are more sinners further from the Eternal City.

>Gain 80 levies
>Gain 40 Archers

(Please don't try and head further towards Constantinople yet)

>AUSTINU CAVALLO

Mercui is not eager to head off into the unknown to death and suffering. He seems quite comfortable here in Sardinia. Or maybe he's just playing hard to get? You might be able to entice him to your side if you applied a little leverage.

>Choose one of the following:
>Lose 1 Wealth, gain Follower: Mercui (ally, 50 infantry/150 levies, skill 4)
>Lose 1 Prestige, gain Follower: Mercui (ally, 50 infantry/150 levies, skill 4)
>No effect

Your search for money is also difficult. Your tactic of 'skimming off the top' isn't considered the proper way by some, and the some members of the church, inspired to be more holy by the declaration of the crusades, kick up a fuss.

>Choose one of the following:
>Lose 1 Piety, Gain 1 Wealth
>No effect
>>
>>933410

>BISHOP ESTEBAN

After giving a sermon, asking sinners to give money towards the crusade in return for absolution, you find your coffers greatly expanded. Obviously there's a lot of guilty consciences about.

>Gain 1 Wealth

Knights are worth more than any other men. The combination of breeding and equipment simply makes them superior. Many of the knights of Spain, in particular, are veterans of fighting the Muslims in Iberia. Knowing this, you look for more knights willing to join you.

>Gain 33 Knights.

>DUKE PIERRE OF ORLEANS

The nobility of France does not like to be seen to be found wanting. Are you not the highest court of Europe? Of those you speak to, a fellow nobleman is the most eager to help. The amount of support he can give will depend on if you wish to help him with his war funds.

>Pick 1 of the following:
>Gain Follower: Count Guy of Foix (ally, 25 knights/100 infantry, skill 5)
>Lose 1 Wealth, Gain Follower: Count Guy of Foix (ally, 50 knights/150 infantry, skill 5)

Two young cousins also answer your call, as you make use of your family connections to call for allies. Although you do not know them well as they are distant relatives and not highly landed or titled, they still bring a respectable amount of men to your aid. What better way is there to get to know them than on crusade together anyway?

>Lose 1 Prestige
>Gain Follower: Jehan de Poitou (ally, 50 infantry/200 levies, skill 4)
>Gain Follower: Geoffroi de Angers (ally 150 levies/100 archers, skill 4)
>EZEKIEL, THE GLASSBREAKER

Well, at least your men don't fight each other during training this time. Still, many of them seem to take poorly to discipline and fighting in formation. Still, you manage to get a few of them up to a more useful standard.

>Lose 51 Levies
>Gain 51 Infantry

You get some of your men into the service of the local monks, who are making banners for the crusaders. Although your men grumble about it, at least the monks give them a free dinner while they do it. The monks are happy with your help, and let other churchmen know about it.

>Gain 1 Piety
>>
>>933417

>SIR STEPHEN SZUR

The horsemen of Hungary are famous, and this extends to the upper classes. You gather several knights to your cause, willing to help spearhead your forces.

>Gain 17 Knights

You send messengers to Constantinople to negotiate with the Imperial Court. Your messengers come back to tell you that negotiations were difficult. Progress will likely require either bribes or for you to try and get recommendation from your king.

>Pick one of the following:
>Lose 1 Wealth, gain 1 Favour
>Lose 1 Prestige, gain 1 Favour
>No effect

(talking with other players is always a free action, you can make whatever deals to cooperate you want)

>MICHAL BALDONI

The Pope grants you an audience and gives you his personal blessing. He gives you the grace of god to take with you to Jerusalem.

>Gain 1 Piety

Your efforts to get into the dye business meet with unexpected success. The crusade has not only roused the warriors of europe, but also the merchants in some ways. Interest in Byzantium has increased with so much being talking about the east, and purple dyes are in high demand. Through some clever dealings, you and your men have managed to make a significant profit.

>Gain 2 Wealth

>GIACOMO FERRARA

You manage to lever some donations of land out of wealthy locals in Milan. The proceeds from these lands aid your financial situation.

>Gain 1 Wealth

Switzerland is not far from Milan, and you quickly receive your reply. A party of Swiss soldiers is coming down to join you. They are led by a particularly hardy and experienced captain, who is happy to work under you as a lieutenant and trainer for your men.

>Gain 150 infantry
>Gain Follower: Kasparvon Silenen (companion, lieutenant, skill 6)
>>
>>933419

>PETER D'ARGENCOURT

There are many knights looking for wars at any time in Europe, but now more so than ever. The chance to serve under an experienced captain, and a nobleman to boot, is a rare chance. Too often are the ones leading them to war virgins of the battlefield. Drawn by your reputation, knights flock in to join you.

>Lose 1 Prestige
>Gain 55 knights

You look for a healer to care for your men. The best place to look is amongst the monks of the holy orders. You find a man with brilliant medical knowledge willing to join your cause, but it will take a little effort to convince his abbot to let him go.

>Choose 1 of the following:
>Lose 1 Piety, Gain Follower: Brother Stephen (companion, healer)
>No effect

>BARON ECKHARD VON GUELDERS

It turns out moving an army, even one that isn't terribly large, is very difficult. Preparations to leave drag on, and in the end you have to delay your departure entirely. While attempting to buy provisions for the journey, you did meet some merchants who assure you they are experts in moving a lot of stuff a long way, and that they can help with your plans for a small payment.

>Add Oath: Land travel to Venice or Hungary for 1 Wealth (can be used any time up to the start of Act 2)

During your efforts to prepare to leave, you amass a respectable baggage train. There can be no doubt that you're someone important as your followers pass by. Perhaps that's why it was so difficult for your forces to get moving?

>Gain 2 Prestige

(there is no need to actually travel yet, please spend your actions on preparations rather than marching)

COUNT BIRINUS PERCY

Your brother works to arrange supplies and plan a route to get to the crusades. He has some success, securing supplies to reach North Italy.

>You may march as far as Northern Italy without any (or at least far less) trouble in Act II

The Baron of Oxford is unwilling to join you, citing his troubles with gout which have developed over the past few years. However, as a personal favour he is willing to let you take some of his soldiers.

>Choose one of the following:
>Lose 1 Prestige, gain 80 infantry

You raid Jewish settlements, taking advantage of the anti-non-christian sentiment that is strong at the moment among the common people. Your troops loot from the locals, but you find yourself being condemned by some of the local clergy, who point out that this isn't what the crusade is about at all. You may return your stolen wealth or keep it and suffer their ire.

>Choose one of the following:
>Gain 1 Wealth, Lose 1 Piety.

Duchy of Burgundy, France
>Position:
Noble of House Burgundy, Half-Brother to Eudes I, Duke of Burgundy
>Background:
Fifth and final son of Duke Robert I The Old, Otto was very young when his father died and it was decided the Duchy would pass unto his nephew and Otto inherited an estate and gold. Otto was not upset about this, however, and vowed to make his own glory. Given a classic education for a powerful noble at that time, Otto made good on his promise and used his status and education to become a squire to a knightly order at the age of 15. He campaigned with his order in several lands, including the Norman conquests of Sicily and Malta and various battles in Iberia and the HRE. When he finally became a full fledged Knight at 19, he sold his Estate and used most of his Savings to buy a full set of armaments and an Iberian horse. He made a name for himself as a brilliant strategist and a strong and courageous fighter and soon many men flocked to his army. When the Pope called for the crusade, he knew this was the opportunity he'd been waiting for and answered his call, heading back to his nephews land to rally funds and more soldiers.

1)In search of wealth to repay Capellos debt, a desperate raid around the northern coast of Africa seems like the only remaining somewhat reasonable option. Bringing my loyal brothers along with me in search of wealth and reclaimed status if it goes well enough.

2) While Austinu is somewhat of a lone wolf, support from the Byzantine empire would be immensely helpful. With no skill in negotiating, Austinu only has one course of negotiation. Austinu will swear a binding oath for all of his army and allies to personally account for at least 1000 Saracen deaths. With a penalty of the Byzantine empires choosing if that goal is not met. In return for this oath, I would request assistance in whatever way the Byzantine empire would provide. Be it men, wealth, or whatever else.

Pierre stands outside his tent on the edge of town looking out across the swelling ranks of his men as his two newly arrived cousins greet him and then march their men to join the other. While he had hoped to be a bit further along in his preparations for the crusades he couldn't be too upset at the number of men he now commanded. Knowing that having the men is only the first step, in order for them to be of any real use they have to actually be able to fight. Pierre goes to speak with the King updating him about his growing army that he has put together and getting the "ok" to train his troops just outside of Paris.

1. Pierre returns to his men dividing them into two groups pitting his original men against his newly acquired allies troops. Pierre sees an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone and after a week of rigorous training teaching the new fighters proper techniques and teamwork, 3 days of war games are held in hopes of impressing the elite of Paris and to further hone their skills.

2. In the little spare time he has between the training of his troops and preparation for the war games Pierre looks over his finances and realizes that he could use more gold to fund the campaign he intends to lead as his coffers are starting to run a little low.

Deciding that his land and most of his valuables will do him no good sitting at home while he is off at war, Pierre reaches out to local merchants putting the word out that he is selling his unneeded land and valuables hoping to acquire enough gold to fund his campaign.

As the Baldoni's feast goes on, he recieves an unexpected guest.

The Bishop of Milan. Giacomo had eccelsiarchal business in Rome, which he traveled to and fro Milan regularly, but had heard of the grand feast held by a merchant, and so decided to visit.

"Greetings, Sir Baldoni.

You hold a most excellent feast, I pray the saints watch over those here who march to the salvation of the Holy Land.

I had heard of this feast, and that it had been held by you. You are known as an established merchant, and I woulds't have need of you.

The Church is assembling an army for the Holy Land. I am organizing it. I would have need of a merchant who can assist in acquiring and ferrying supplies and the transport of troops to the Holy Land, via ship if preferable, or if need be on foot.

Tell me, would you be willing to work for the Church?"

1. While Giacomo himself was at Rome, his machinations still continued.

He desired Dirversity, different fighting styles, to achieve a more all encompassing Army.

He had the sellswords of the Condotierri, and the Pikes of the Swiss, yet these were still both Infantry forces.

He wanted some ranged forces to compliment them.

In nearby Genoa tells of a company of famed Crossbowmen, well experienced and trained at the device. He would send letters for them. Having their experience would do well.

2. An army, like a man, needs food to survive. Thanks to his recent works, more farmland was opened up to the Church, and therefore to himself.

But man cannot survive on wine alone, he needs bread. Grain would make an excellent food source to ferry from Milan to the Holy Land, either by foot or better still by ship. It can last a decade or more with ease if uncorrupted and dried within the shell.

Since new land opportunities were available for the church, now the issue was just to staff it with more farmers. What more pious and noble way than to suggest the use of beggars and repenetant scoundrels to work the farms?

While in Rome, Giacomo would suggest to the Holy Church a decree of alternate penance. Those prisoners, sinners, or simple Beggars would be encouraged, if they could not afford the trip to the Holy Land, to migrate instead to Milan where they might earn their sentence through farm labor, as well as their feed.

This was of course, all part of a greater plan. Giacomo's strategy required having recruits available as often as possible, so encouraging men to come to Milan would serve this role. Better still, while they are working at the farms, he could as easily train them for the chance to go to the Holy Land. For now though, he would make his suggestions to the Church to encourage prisoners throughout Italy and Europe to work the farms in Milan as penance for their crimes and sins.

I would spend some piety on this if needed.

Birinus reluctantly accepts, knowing the Baron of Oxford as a good man to be working with, expressing his regret of the Baron's situation.
Birinus, having recruited a good 100 men in his journeys outside his good lands, begins riding back.
On his way back to his castle, he scours the countryside for any jews, brigands, smugglers or likewise, intending to do a last sweep of his lands before leaving but also wanting to seize whatever he might find for himself. Birinus likes to keep his county relatively clean and orderly but he hasn't done so in a long time, the news of the crusade bringing lost activity, excitement and motivation to Birinus. As he pursues a particular group, Birinus converses with a villager for information on the group but before he leaves he also informs the peasant of the upcoming crusade, asking him to send any interested men to his castle for recruitment.
After a few long days, Birinus arrives at his castle and receiving a letter from his brother, immedeatly responds, instructing him that while in the area, Bishop Guy should look for any siege experts, particularly men that could build such machinery, knowing full well from the stories of his father how much of a burden are siege engines when travelling.

Yes, certainly. Now that there are four of us we'll all have to discuss this to make arrangements.

You have archers, Calli has an engineer, Esteban has church connections and I'm planning on getting a medic next turn although you can never have enough of them.
Not sure what to do about their troop specialties though.
Perhaps Esteban could do infantry and Calli could do heavy cavalry while you do archers and maybe pickup some crossbowmen.
My plan was to focus on having a small elite group of cavalry archers to act as scouts, vanguards and harrass supply lines and reinforcements during seiges.

We also need to consult the Pope about combining our favour points to get a passport.
I just spent 1 wealth to get 1 favour last turn. So if you three could make similar arrangements, then perhaps that would be enough for safe passage and maybe some extra supplies to divide between us.

PATRICIAN ELECT CONRAD DODONI

You manage to find an engineer, a certain Angelo Bianchi. Trained in the universities of northern italy, he is a scholar of war, and guarantees he has the best knowledge possible on the mechanics of fortifications, both how to put them up and how to bring them down. He tells you that with the wealth you were offering up, he could potentially prepare a pair of trebuchet that could be taken with you in the ships in pieces. They could potentially slow down your travel once you disembark though.

Over the next few days, however, he turns out not to be quite what you thought. By this point it is too late to easily extract yourself from the partnership. Between a bad reputation, bad debts, and god only knows what other trouble, it seems Count Ulrich is more using the crusades as an opportunity to escape. Hopefully he'll have learnt his lesson. Some of the fallout of his problems ended up affecting you as well before you manage to help him stabilise the situation.

AUSTINU CAVALLO

Your raid is somewhat less than successful. What was meant to be a landing in Tunisia at a largely defenceless settlement turned south when a couple of Barbary Pirate galleys came into the bay behind you, coincidentally coming in to harbour at the town. With both sides surprised by the other, a brief and messy skirmish ensued, in which several of your men were killed by enemy arrows. Not prepared to fight an enemy capable of real resistance you order a hasty retreat. With some casualties there's a little more kit to go round for the other soldiers though.

>Lose 23 levies.
>Gain 11 infantry.

Clapping Angleo on the shoulder, I invite him in to the war room of the Dodoni Palace. I introduce him to Marco, and we sit down to discuss our Immediate plans.Primarily, the issue is we have run out of money. However, there are several Merchant houses and Churches in Venice that are... less Papal minded due to the mindset of most of Northern Italy. Surely the Pope will not frown upon their paying of their fair share towards the reclamation of gods kingdom. And if they object, a well timed parade should put paid any thoughts of miserliness...
Speaking of parades, increasing our numbers can only be a good thing. Maybe these parades might lure away some of the levies and pavaise crossbowmen of the Italian city states, maybe even some skilled personnel who find themselves at a loose end.
1. Lean on the churches of Northern Italy for Donations to the Crusade, floating 1 piety to represent the Popes official backing.

Travel to Hungary, to meet up with Sir Stephen, while on the way, spread your word, as the Leader of the Righteous Robbers, fighting the good fight and helping the pious sinners find their path, to raise some prestige, and maybe get a few willing souls for battle

Send a letter to the Imperial Palace, explaining my position and how I will oversee the safe transport of the Crusaders throughout the Empire

An army marches on it's stomach. It will soon be difficult to find nonperishable foodstuffs. Rather than have his men buy up as much as they can get their hands on , and deprive others of the resource, Michal has them purchase fresh foods and process it into nonperishable. He hopes his efforts will make him a goodly amount of coin as well as supplying his fellow man with the goods they need to keep their armies marching.

Michal had never felt more insignificant than when hosting his own feast. Coming to terms with his own ignorance while his guests overwhelmed him with their knowledge of the military arts and logistics of warfare.

1) Secure sources of produce and manufacture nonperishable foodstuffs.
2) Seek out classical and contemporary training in warfare.

To the man whose name I share Alexios I Komnenos, King of Kings ruling over the ruly, Viceregent of God, Emperor of the Romans, Despotes of the Roman people, Autocrator of the Hellenics, Champion of Orthodox Christianity and dear mentor and friend,

As a man who raised me from my young adulthood to be a good strategos, you surely acknowledge my word as being loyal to the Empire and a man of my word. So, with the pleasantries out of the way, I wish to explain my position to you. I am currently on the road to Hungary, and with great pleasure I am writing you that so far, a lot of people have gathered for your plea of help, though it was not exactly the help you asked for. Pontifex Maximus and Patriarch of Rome Urban II called for a holy war, a concept similar to the Mohammedan jihad, though he called it a "Crusade". Well those "crusaders" are comming en masse to, not only liberate Anatolia from the Turk, but also liberate the Holy Land from the Saracens. As such, it would be difficult to manage the thousands of troops pouring in Constantinople, without problems. While our western brothers in Christ might be good in heart, they still haven't given up some of their barbaric practices and are somewhat unruly, as is typical of the Latin, but fret not dear Basileius for I will watch over them, their potential actions of violence will not happen, and due to my knowledge of the Imperial lands, I will grant them safe passage to Constantinople, or they will answer to me and the authorities. Though I cannot guarantee anything to those who reach Constantinople by sea, until I reach the City myself.

I hope you, and the aristocracy can see me in a better light after you read this letter, and while I might have commited a mistake, I am commited to fixing it. Those soldiers lost under my command will be paid back for in blood, the blood of the heathen, or my blood. This blood tax is in effect until I am forgiven for my misgivings.

Regards, Alexandros Callimachos of Philadelphia, humble servant of God and the Empire, Patriarch of House Callimachoi, Leader of the Righteous Robbers, Protector of Philadelphia and Orthodox Crusader

Geoffroi de Angers (ally 150 levies/100 archers, skill 4)

Time is beginning to run short on Pierre before he has to set off for the crusades but at least now with the sell of some of his lands he has some coin to put towards the effort. He decides that horses will be a good investment. Not only will they make travel easier but maybe he can get the cavalry he already has to train more troops in the skill. Figuring that he could use an experienced healer and engineer on the trip as well, Pierre has decided the first place he wishes to spend some of his coin.

1. Pierre sends out his most trusted lieutenants with some of the newly acquired wealth around Paris in search of as many horses as they can find and anyone experienced in the medical or engineering professions. His men are ordered to ask for the resources in order to bring glory to France first but are given enough coin to sway them if need be.
Spend the wealth to ensure greater success.

2. The time to leave Paris will be soon as the crusades are almost up on us. Pierre looks over his forces and is quite impressed but still thinks he could use more, especially knights. Cavalry is another priority but he expects to get a decent amount of horses for the coin he sent. Pierre decides to travel around town giving a few rousing speeches in the most crowded parts of town to get to word out to all those that are still looking to crusade but have not found an army to join yet to join him for the glory of France.

Spend a prestige to bring in more troops (priority on knights but none refused)

Birinus rides down to his ports, from there he acquires and arranges what supply he can, also keeping an eye out for any travelling men that might be pursued to join him.
He recieves a letter from his brother, telling him about Hugh de Toulouse and his skill, he congratulates his brother and instructs him to return to Normandy.
As he looks down at his map, an idea springs to his mind, he gathers a good amount of his men and explains how the neighbouring Count of Devon is a weak ruler, unable to maintain his lands as stable and as orderly as his dear self. He explains how it would be a very christian and good-neightboor act, to sweep his eastern lands and clear them of any ''ruffians'' that plague it, taking their worthy due from these ruffians either as wealth and goods or serviceable men. Birinus has always suspected that all the bad things : plague, cultists, brigands, smugglers, jews and so on come from the west, he has been somewhat vocal about these suspicion and doesn't see very well with the Count of Devon, a weak ruler and coward that doesn't leave his own castle as Birinus sees him.
Having easily convinced his men, he rides through the eastern bit of Devon, he is much more liberal in determining who might be a ruffian, subject to either service or paying a tax than he would be with his own lands.
( might be doing a bad but this seems like the stuff a medieval smartass like Birinus would do, especially around the time of a crusade)

>1) Sustenance for the army
The Duke is not happy with the current goings-on of his preparations. He hopes that his men will have more luck with their next assignment: acquiring food for the army. Specifically, food that can be easily carried and will not go bad, or at least not too quickly, such as grain, dried meat, dried beans, and other foods of the same variety. He uses the wealth gained from raiding those jewish villages to ensure that his men do not fail him again.
(I use 1 Wealth for this action)

>2) Putting the men to work
To see the effects of his two lieutenants' training on his men, and maybe gather some profit, The Duke sends his army to go hunt bandits and take up bounties in the neighboring lands. Maybe, the rulers of these lands will show their appreciation and support, after witnessing such an action.

You realise the jew lives in cities. In a quarter set aside for them...
As to the alliance, I simply believe it is best for all of us to travel together, especially since the sea is full of Muslim pirates. And while overland travel is effective and cheaper, it does rely on the Emperor being happy with supplying a vast army.

>>939884

From France, do you think the easier route would be by land or by sea? I'm still trying to figure out exactly how I'm getting to the crusades.
>>
>>939887
Well securing sea travel is slightly safer, and requires less trust to be placed in the Basileus. However, it does pass on chances to team up with Byzantine nobles and thier armies, since the Basileus is still the most powerful man still friendly towards us in the East. One way is quick and safer, but has less potential for power. The other has more chances for increased power, but requires more favours, money and time. I'm going by sea, cause Im from Venice. Its easy for me to acquire ships, and Venice and Byzantium have not got on.
>>
Pic related is a map I was going to use when people are travelling. Based on current trend of discussion, I thought releasing it might be useful. Each blue arrow will represent a turns travel (assuming you don't fuck the rolls). Based on this, everyone can reach Constantinople or Armenia, whichever they pick, within 4 turns if all goes to plan.

If you travel with people you can mitigate some of the problems that may show up for you, and you'll be able to roll to boost your forces further while you wait for them to catch up, if you're closer to the destination.

On the other hand, if you arrive early you'll also be able to make some rolls while waiting for the others to arrive.

In both cases, you'll be less able to recruit than you can during the current Act I section, and Act II will just generally be less friendly (warming you up for Act III, which will attempt to murder you).

Sea and land travel will both have problems, which good rolls will help to reduce. With bad rolls and bad luck, some of these could be disasterous, but travelling in a group means no one is likely to be quite so buttraped.

However, if a huge number of people travel together, that could also lead to its own problems, potentially being worse than in a smaller group.

Oh shit niggas, looks like there's no easy answer.

Good luck.
