>>Create a new Overlord

The winds howl down the side of the mountain and into the small hamlet of Welfall. The cold wind cuts through the walls of your tiny shack, if you could call it a shack. You've conjured a small fire near your feet and have wrapped yourself in a patchwork blanket. Over the howls of the winds you hear the growling of your stomach. You can't take it any longer, it has been three days since this windstorm started and you have no more food. Time to be the menace the town has labeled as and steal some food. Another gust shakes the wall furiously and your already broken mirror falls to the ground, you look at your reflection.

>You see a girl with skin as fiery as her hair but eyes as blue as an electric spark

Turning away from your reflection slightly disgusted with your own sickly appearance, you open the door and begin your trek to the outskirts of Welfall. You hold the blanket close to you trying to block the wind, loose scraps fly off of it more than likely to never be seen again. Coming to another shack you huddle against its wall, you have a choice. Try stealing food near the edge of town and just take what you need for today but that means you'll probably have to come back out tomorrow. Or you can try stealing from a market stall and get a couples days worth but you are more likely to get caught. You look down at your missing pinky finger on your left hand. You'd probably lose more than last time.

Sneak up to a door you try turning the handle ever so slowly, the door gently opens. Letting go of the handle to begin creeping in the wind catches your makeshift cloak and throws you against the door and onto the floor. Springing up you dust yourself off and look up, a stunned to silence family eating at their table. A small shriek fills the room, "MONSTER!" Fuck. Time to go

If you run back home they'll just follow you straight there. Your best bet is losing them in town, maybe you'll be able to snag some food on the way. Rushing through the home you push your way through the front door and immediately start running as fast as your feet will carry you. Ducking down alleys and narrow side streets you are making good distance. After a few minutes you are sure they aren't following you anymore you hide in a small alcove to catch your breathe. Just then you hear metal footstep coming down the alley. You won't be able to run if they spot you, magic is your only option. You're best at...

"We both know I'm not doing anything wrong just sitting here freezing to death. And if you just keep standing there you'll freeze to the bone too. Just let me be for now and I'll help you convince Theresa you are worth her time. Come on Thak." The wide man rubs his chin with thought, "Fine but if you run into Dirk you are on your own" He walks off whistling or maybe that his armor whistling hard to tell with the wind. You bundle up in your blanket for a bit to regain some heat and think about what you should do next. You are still hungry but Thak had a point Dirk isn't much for words he prefers the sound of cracking bones. Maybe you could try stealing food from the church, Dirk hates it there. But you could get trapped listening to preaching.

If Dirk isn't going to be there it's probably the best place to go. Continuing through the alleys and through streets the church isn't to far, coming to the back door you can hear that the monks have dinner which means the kitchen should be empty to rifle through. You learned from last time and wait for the wind to die down before sneaking in. The monks have prepared bread for tomorrow's sermon they won't notice a loaf missing but should you take more food? Looks like there is some meat and vegetables left but they will surely notice if it's gone, your stomach growls lowly. The sound of mumbling is just down the hall you better decide.

Grabbing the bread you are about to take your leave when a plate shatters on the other side of the kitchen "OOPSIES" raspy laughter follows. You look over to find 3 small brown... things chugging their way through the monk's wine collection. One smashes a bottle after it finishes it which makes the other two cackle with glee and follow suit. One of them notices you "MASTAH MASTAH MASTAH" and drops the bottle it had. They jump on you screaming in joy? smashing everything they can grab their mitts on. The added weight makes you stagger and stumble towards a trapdoor that was closed when you came in. The monks will be in any second, you need to jump in or get these things of you if you are going to get out

More falling in than jump in, you go down the trapdoor and hit the ground and before you can really take in your surroundings you are being dragged deeper into these tunnel. Finally getting to your feet the urge you even farther in, you guess these go a while away from the church. After about 10 minutes of being more or less shoved and pulled alonged you come to a large chamber, in the center a metal gauntlet with a large yellow gemstone in the forearm. "TAEK TAEK" You could take it and keep it might even up some fights or you could sell it and get some money maybe people would respect you then, probably not but you can hope.

You pull the gauntlet on, while large it seems to fit you perfectly, the gemstone seems to glow and you swear you hear a warhorn blow. "Interesting," facing towards the voice you find another brown thing, looks pretty old compared to the others. "We weren't expecting you quite yet but eagerness is always a desirable quality to an Overlord. It pleases to meet you Master, I am Gnarl your most humble of advisors and wisest of tutors." This one seem a lot smarter than the others. "You have already met Skabb, Tark and Kev. Right now these are the minions you can control. I'm sure you have many questions feel free to ask." What to ask first.... Your stomach give you the answer with a loud growl. With all the chaos you haven't eaten yet and dropped the bread when you initially jumped, fell, down here. "Can you get me food? I'm starving."

Gnarl gives a small chuck, "Pragmatic aren't you? SKABB!" The brown thing that was picking its teeth with its toenail pops up "Get the young master some food, and not of the eaten variety." Skabb runs off down a tunnel hopefully to return with food soon.

>>944103
Might as well get straight to the point. "What are the lot of you? Can do anything other than drink, break, and fetch things?"

Gnarl gives a heartier laugh this time around, "We kill things too, My lord. As to what we are... Sometimes we are called imps, devils, terrors, hellspawn but you can just call us Minions. We serve The Overlord, You."

>>945631
"Just how many more of you are there?"

Gnarl is less pleased with this question than your previous ones and lets out a sigh. "In our prime we have tens of thousands in our Legion of Evil, but alas when the previous Overlord perished we became lost and disbanded. Counting myself, the few you've already met, and the rest... 11" You hear a displeased cry, "HEY" A minion in jester attire is tapping its foot before a rock hits it in the head. "And Quaver, but you don't have to count him. We don't"

Skabb finally returns with arms full with breads and meats, "HEAR YOU GO!" unceremoniously dropping it to the ground at your feet. Your questions have been answered, you are sure to come up with more later but now it is time to eat. Today has become very interesting. You have more food than you've ever had in front of you ever. You have a new gauntlet that will definitely equalize some fights with Dirk if it comes to it. Mysterious Minions that will follow your commands. And a new place to get out of the winds from.

Gnarl breaks the silence, "What are your commands, Dark One. I'd suggest you help us recover our Brown Minion Hive. But its is ultimately your choice."

More minions could be helpful in making whatever you want to do possible. Or you could go and find Dirk, make him regret taking your finger. Maybe follow up that promise to Thak, maybe you could squeeze another favor from him. The possibilities, decisions.

"Excellent choice, Master. Now we know that it is within the town, but I suspect the fat mayor has it in his home or his office. Your minions are going to need some... guidance if we are going to return it to the rightful hands of evil, Ours. Using this wind as cover we should be able to mostly be free to walk the streets, but I highly doubt the town guard would be able to put up much resistance if you were found. Oh and before you go we also found you this Master. Use it at your discretion." Gnarl presents a small but weighty mace to you. Perfect, Dirk will truly regret running into you if he crosses your path again.

While Gnarl had a point about the wind you know the guards are still up there patrolling, the shortest path you know will possibly cross one of their routes. You are well equipped for a fight now but if it drags on to long more will come soon and you aren't exactly experienced at fighting yet. A longer path means less of a chance of running in to guards. Which path will you take?

Playing it safe for now is probably the better option, at least until you get more of these minions at your disposal. Returning to the surface you quickly duck down a side street and travel near the edge of town. You are glad you took this path, the whole way not even the slightest sound of the guards is heard. After a short while you can see the mayor's office, but Thak is near the front. You might be able to talk your way passed Thak but he might try roping you into upholding that promise now. Deciding to look at the back entrance reveals a guard there as well, Dirk. You could just bludgeon him now but you get the gut feeling Dirk is waiting for someone and they'd find him quickly. Sneaking around some more you find an open window on the second level near a drain spout, you could trying sneaking through there. Time to consider the options...

Lets explain away the weapons and the actual reason you are here "You showed me kindness I haven't experience in so long. I want to follow in your steps. I want to talk to the mayor about becoming a guard to prove that I'm not a terror to this town. Please I already have a gauntlet and a mace. Give me this chance."

Thak looking rather proud of himself that HE convinced you to change your ways nods. "Sure come on in the mayor's office is upstairs in the back. Says Mayor on the door." He opens the door escorting you inside.

Walking in you are stopped by a man at the front desk who seems to have gotten a lot of ink around his eyes. "Whoa what are you doing here? You aren't allowed in the town! Guard thro-"

Thak interjects "I've taken him under my wing, I convinced him to become good and protect the people. He wants to be a guardsman. He's going to see the mayor." Before the inked eyed man can get a word he Thak pushes you along so he can retell the amazing story of your uplifting from street urchin to guardsman trainee.

Better go straight to the mayor's office otherwise Thak may notice you wandering and make him really use that brain of his. Following the directions he gave you find the office no problem, but probably anyone could have found it with the bright red MAYOR on the door. Standing just outside you can hear the mayor arguing with someone inside. "FUCKING MUMBLERS SAY SOMETHING INSTEAD OF MUMBLING OR GET OUT" The Mumbling Monks leave the office, one looks you up and down but you can only look at his mouth. Like the rest it is sewn shut but you can tell he is new to the order, blood dried on his lips. You will never understand the lunacy of sowing your mouth shut daily then trying to have normal conversation with people. Finally you step in the office and see the mayor, a man about as wide as he his tall.

"The fuck doing here and the fuck do you want before I have a guard come in here and break your bones"

You made it this far with the bullshit, might as well spoon feed it to the mayor too "I've come to join the guard. I can't live in that shack anymore. Can I prove to you and this town I'm not a menace? Please even if you give me all the shitty work it would be more than enough."

The man leans back and lights a cigar, he just sits there for a moment thinking. He blows the smoke in your face as he talks, "You've caused me a lot of problems in the past and you know right now I'd love nothing more than wring your neck. But this is a unique opportunity you've given me, you on a short leash. I don't care if this some line of horseshit you are trying to sell, because you just put yourself in a corner with nowhere to go. Fine. You are going to be a guard. You report to Dirk, you follow his every command. If I hear about you getting "spirited" and I will make sure that get shut down. Take this to Dirk and get the fuck out" He tosses a paper at you after scribbling something on it and stamps it with a seal.

Picking up up the paper you make your way out when you see it, what you can only suspect as the hive. Sitting in the corner, half covered in coats and hats. This fucking fatass is using it as a coat rack? Really? You just need the chance to get back in here with some minions.

"I SAID GET THE FUCK OUT OR ARE YOU DEAF"

Forced to leave you are confront with an immediate choice: do you actually go see Dirk? Things could only end poorly but maybe you could play this guard angle more

Unfortunately your best option right now is to keep playing the guard trainee, you head back downstairs where Thak is still spinning a grand epic of your conversion to the side of the good and righteous. "And then as he... Oh hey it go good?" He snags the paper from you he looks it over before giving it back to you looking a little crestfallen. "Guess Dirk gets to train you not me.... oh well. Dirk is at the back door today. And this doesn't mean you get to forget about that promise ok."

Just nodding you start towards the backdoor knowing this will only turn out extremely painful in a few minutes. Opening the backdoor you find Dirk smoking something absolutely wretched smelling, he turns towards you "Dah fuck do you think you can be walking around in town like this? And dah fuck is this?" He rips the paper from you hand and starts reading it. Quickly he starts laughing almost doubling over. "You are bullshitin me? Hooo fuck we are going to have some fun. Never before have you seen someone's face that deep of red, Dirk is definitely pissed off. He drops a shoulder and tries tackling you against the wall. Planting yourself firmly and throwing your fist forward your armored knuckles find Dirk's jaw. He screams and staggers for a moment before throwing a fist of his own at you, which you backhand away and lead right into another punch to his mouth. Laid out on the ground he spits out a mouthful of blood and a tooth, "I yeeelds" he gurgles. Looks like he's had enough... but have you? The tip of your boot hits his ribs with a healthy crack, he writhes in pain "FUCK!" You spit on his face just like he did to you earlier, squatting down so you know he hears you. "You ever strike me again it will swiftly be followed by an introduction to your maker. Understand?" He whimpers and nods, well that take care of Dirk. Now what to do with the rest of your time today? Should you balance out that karma and help out Thak. Or do you have other things on your mind?

Leaving Dirk on the ground you make your way back to the front of the mayoral building to look for Thak. The ink eyed man stares at you as if you were going to steal everything that wasnt nailed down, which might help spruce up the cavern a bit actually now that you think on it. Thak is again waiting near the front door, he perks up a bit. "Wow already done with training? It took me 3 months to even to remember where all the guard posts are. So what brings you back here?" Explaining you are back to close up the promise you made earlier. Thak is ecstatic to hear it and has already come up with the first way you can help him. He pulls out a letter, "Can you take this to her, I spent all day writing it and I'm sure she'll be in love with me after reading it" Great a delivery, how thrilling. Well at least it's not a fetch quest those get annoying. After some quick directions you are off. Knowing Thak it's probably poorly written you could check it for mistakes before delivering it. Or should you just keep it between them?

Deerist Theyreesa,

Tearing a public notice off a near by building and burning the end of a stick to act as a pencil you rewrite the "love letter". Now it doesn't have any spelling errors and you only changing the last sentence so it flows a little better. Much more respectable, probably won't help his chances much but you tried. Folding it up and putting in the envelope you continue onwards to Theresa's home, something is nagging at the back of your head the way there. It feels like you are forgetting something important but what is it? Knocking on her door you can hear some tapping before the door opens a crack, a girl with long dark hair and light skin is standing behind the door. "Hello? What do want?" She is gripping the door tightly, you hold the letter out to her, "Thak wanted me to give this to you" She sighs deeply, before sweeping here hand down in front of the opening and grasps the letter. "I've told him to stop with the letters, what does he think I do just run my fingers along the page and I can read it?" Now you remember, she's blind. Well you could just leave and end this awkward experience or maybe you could offer to read it to her yoy guess.

Just before she close the door you but your boot in the door, "I can read it to you if you want. It's probably really short anyways knowing Thak" She stands there for a moment before opening the door, "I've actually been kind of curious about what he writes in his letters. Come in, sit down." Stepping out of the way she expertly navigates to a small stove and puts on a kettle before sitting down. Taking a seat across from her you open the letter and read it to her casually. She laughs a bit, "That's it? Well I can tell you this he just has a wonderful way with words. I will have to decline his offer though as tempting as it is. Thank you for reading it to me it was actually quite kind of you." Standing up to leave and give Thak the bad news Theresa tries reaching out and grabbing you but misses. Maybe she wants you to stay? Guess a little while couldn't hurt. But you should really get back to Gnarl and let him know that you found the hive.

Eh the hive will still be there when you do go back to Gnarl, and talking with someone who isn't an idiot or an asshile could be a nice change of pace for your life. You sit back down, "who are you?" The question comes off unintentionally deep, the easy answer is the street urchin that lives in the shack outside town. Or is it newly appointed guard that asserted your supremacy of Dirk? Or is it recently found master of minions and mayhem? Or are you something complete different?

You are the overlord but that probably won't go over well even using some magic so guard you will pretend to be for a little longer. "I'm the o- just a guard in training nobody special" Nailed it. "Oh," She says with a little judgment in her voice, "so you run around with Dirk and his brutes. Why would you ever want to be one of them? Do you like hurting other people?" She does her best to mean mug your general direction before laughing. She gets up and carefully pours tea for you both before returning to her seat and placing the cups down slowly. "I can tell you aren't one of Dirk's goons. You actually offered to read the letter you were sent to delivered, they never would have done that. You seem like a good person, Theo" She smiles and takes a sip of tea. Well that seemed closer that it needed to be, you could ask her something in return so the conversation doesn't die or stagnate or you could just leave and take news of the hive to Gnarl

She relaxes back a bit, "You are an interesting one Theo, I will give you that much. Enough talking with the talking though, I've kept you long enough.Surely the other guards have noticed your long absence by now."

You do need to be going, thanking her you leave and step back out on the street. Should you return to Thak and finally give him the bad news or can that wait another day. Gnarl is probably wondering where you are as well.

Convincing the mayor it is actually a cursed item or something equally dangerous item will be the least suspicious way of him getting rid of it. Just need to set up some accidents or maybe you can get your new fortune teller friend to say it curses the owner. Naturally the people will want to destroy it but some more bullshitting and carefully prepared accidents will lead them to dump it on you.

"Truly genius planning Master. I do like well laid out plans opposed to brute force, subtly is an excellent quality to have in a true overlord. When should we begin the setup dark one?"

Playing it soon could draw unwanted attention to your recent acquisition of your new job but waiting too long can't guarantee that your plan will play out exactly as expected either.

>57, Success

Over the next month Gnarl teaches you a broad range of subjects including basic minion commands and strategies where you are informed there are 3 more minion types, Red green and blue, that you do not have command over yet. Another interesting topic is basic financial math and "business negotiation" because, "many don't like paying their tithes but no one likes an axe to the skull". Business negotiations is probably your favorite subject, very hands on. Meanwhile you slowly become more accepted as a guard, many still have their suspicions about you but nothing that hampers your progress to "assimilate" to normal village life. Thak was intially heartbroken at his rejected offer but has since redoubled his efforts at winning Theresa's heart. Many more letters are written which he expects you to deliver. This actually helps your plan of using Theresa to convince the town the "coat rack" is cursed, slowly you've convinced her to be more willing to go outdoors. One last part needs to be solved though, exactly what kinda of "curse" should the hive have?

>General bad luck

Usually the simplest plans are the most effective and causing general bad luck and misfortune is a task your minions are up to... you're pretty sure. When in eye sight they follow your orders perfectly but they tend to get distracted when you or Gnarl are close by. You've got some time to train them before you intially wanted to start your plan but you aren't sure it would be enough. Gnarl is also pushing the overlord lessons hard on you and expecting all available free be put towards them but it might sour your "friendships" with Thak and Theresa. Your word is the final say though so do you can do as you please.

It would probably benefit you to listen to more of Gnarl's lessons, which you will be doing for now. This month is basic mind domination, Gnarl recognizes your natural aptitude with word charming and thinks it would be best to expand upon it. There are a few things to keep in mind with it though, the best results come when the target is weaker willed than you, and the spell can completely backfire against stronger willed targets.

>Spell acquired: Dominate, control the mind of a target. Failure proportional to difference in will power. Target is removed of personality

Two months have passed since joining the guard you believe your minions are ready and you have some magic and favors you can use in a pinch if you need to cast suspicion elsewhere or a situation that can advance your plans. It's time to get the ball rolling.

Arriving at the mayoral building, without your left boot, you find everyone is confused as he'll and trying to assess the damage. Many solution to the missing shoes were to double or triple up on socks for their left but one poor bastard had his peg leg taken and now he was hopping everywhere. All the windows and doors were stuck open and no one could get them to budge. Snow had made its way through to the front lobby and many of the upper offices, water was dripping from upstairs and small icicles were forming. But the thing that caused the most misery was all the pens and ink were missing. You were told to turn awat anyone who attempted to go in the building that day until the mess was sorted out

This "curse" has definitely put everyone on edge, really on edge. Coincidentally the mayor's office is getting the brunt of the snow storm. Absolute shut down of the mayor's office has ripples going through the town, with no guards posted anywhere else crime has risen with neighbor stealing from neighbor to keep food on the table. Taxes aren't being collected and even if they were there would be no way to track them with all the missing ink and the water logged paper. Whispers are saying this a divine punishment for a corrupt local government, others aren't so sure. Maybe calling in a favor to nudge the people's thoughts in the right direction might help.

You need to convince the mayor that he should talk to Theresa, the sooner the better. Saying goodbyes you definitely notice that she is still pretty conflicted, she isn't going to forgive you immediately but maybe with time. The way back you think about what happened, things have changed. You don't feel guilty about what you did, it was always part of the plan but maybe you should have considered what her reaction would have been. You'll keep this in mind when including other people into your plans. When you arrive back you really have only two options, drop a hint that the mayor should go get a reading or claim you've spoken to Theresa and she'll do a reading for him. Both should lead to the same outcome but who knows what could happened with all the other whispers around town going on. Or you could cause more mayhem around to give more credit to the idea of it being a curse.
