Now...now it shouldn't be hard to find her. I can recognize her Reiryoku and track it almost as easily as I can trace my many scars. Like a bright morning sun, a breath of cold air, or a strong drink, it wakes you up just from looking at it, like Aya herself actually.

I just have to start looking...she isn't far from here, and she's no where near her and Aizen's barrack. So she's probably on break. I start to head over to where I'm sensing her. Maybe she's doing some shopping? why else would she be in a shopping district.

I tense up, feeling my muscles tighten in the second before she hits me.

She slams into me, with a loud thud. I don't move, or even budge as she hits my chest. I grab her before she can fall, since I don't think she was expecting to hit something that hard, or to bounce off of it.

I gently slap her face to wake her up, wiping the bit of blood rolling out of her nose as she opens her eyes and gasps.
She blinks a few times, like she's trying to remember where she is.

"Sorry about that" I say sweetly, smiling as she rubs her forehead looking pretty confused, and dazed, like she got beaten over the head with a club "Aya, but you really need to learn to not just leap at people like that, its pretty dangerous you know"

"What happened?" She says, sounding drunk drunk as I hug her, and she realizes I am, and hugs me back, smiling happily "Oh right, I've been looking for your kimi!"

She pauses and frowns, narrowing her eyes angrily

"Where have you been for the last week, I was worried sick!" She yells, tugging on my cheek as I laugh weakly

"I've been busy and...a bit cut up, I didn't want you to get worried or give me anymore of your blood soo" I say happily as I set her down, making sure she can stand by keeping her balanced with a hand on her shoulder "I kept it a secret"

"Well it didn't work" She says, pouting as she rubs her nose "Don't just disappear for a week without telling me, Kimi"

First off, I just said sympathetic. Sympathy doesn't have to mean you subscribe to their point of view, just that you understand why they have it. I am just a sucker for depthy character interaction. Adds a lot of legitimacy to this whole fanon quest deal we are doing here.

In other words: when Kimi and Aizen finally do have a talk about this, it has a good chance of getting interesting.

Second, Kimi doesn't exactly know how soul society is run, not very well at any rate. In some ways, it is very similar to the period in Japan that favored the samurai caste, so Kimi probably likes that part of it. But, the people who actually run things and call the shots are the out-of-touch central 46 -- an organization that has pretty much never been portrayed in a positive light in canon. Kimi might not like them much.

And hey, speaking of Kubos, and since /qst/ is such a slow board, here is some arguably useful jargon I threw together on the topic of theming in Bleach. Well, one theme at least. I got more of this crap I have been accumulating since I read so many damn Bleach quests and try to actually think about it:


It's such an afterthought that it isn't even much in the way of a theme in Bleach, but it is one of the very first things Kubo establishes in his own canon and it is nearly comical how little attention gets paid to it in the grand scheme of things. It is one hell of a gigantic elephant in the room, if you ever stop to consider the implications of it: I'm talking about death and the afterlife. Kubo establishes almost immediately that, unknown to nearly everyone, ghosts are real and there is a whole hidden world and system revolving around them that nearly all the living don't know a thing about. Kind of like Men in Black, if you think about it.

Seriously, consider that one of the greatest and most agonized over mysteries of the human condition is mortality and what happens when you die. In bleach, that question comes pre-answered.* Seems like a big deal to me, maybe worth shaping events and attitudes around that fact from time to time. The living world in Bleach seems to be much like our own in that the everyday schlub has no certainty about what awaits them when they die, and isn't in a hurry to find out. Even the scrubbiest of the scrubs from Bleach are still "in" on one of the universe's biggest secrets and would do well to keep it to themselves if they don't want to sound like a headcase.

You could take out virtually all of the super-powered shonen stuff and you would still have a fairly good starting point for a story, but that is just classic Kubo: coming up with an interesting, novel idea (or character, for that matter) and instead of exploring it and building on it, just tossing it aside and moving on to something else.

*At least for Japan, still a bit shaky on whether or not Bleach canon implies, denies or ignores the possibility of other afterlives. Other quests have tried to do things with this; but, personally, I am yet to see anyone reap much success from attempting it.

Last word of general advice before I am outta here: don't repeat Kubo's (and to an extent SSQ's and HQR) mistakes and try to constantly one-up the stakes and everything else for that matter. Try to keep the themes focused and actually resolve a thing or two before moving on. Reign in the power creep so differences matter, at least a little. Ichigo barely got his bankai before Grimmjow was like, "lol, slowpoke."

The setting was complicated enough at its inception, no need to go nuts too fast. Pacing.

Our zanpakuto's clash again, and I realize I'm getting ganged up on now, I just smile, and silently try my best to keep up with these two. Its kind of hard with how fast they're going

Alright, prepare for a wall of spoilers text. And fell free to steal any of this if you like it HM.

I don't have all of the fine details worked out like name or range, but the basic idea is this: "I will take the worst moment of my life, the day my friends died, the day I was almost returned to my gilded hell, the day everything that mattered to me came crashing down around me, and destroy you with it." The first effect of Kimis Bankai will me to drag her opponent into a mental landscape of the place she died: the gates of Shiroyama. At first, all is quiet and empty, the stillness of death pervading every inch of this place. Then the gate open, but instead of a lone Shinigami with a new sword, but 500 of the greatest Samurai to ever live. Each one at their peak, all of their glory realized through the lens of nostalgia, all bearing down on their target. On their own, they are only master swordsmen, and could easily be defeated by a strong enough opponent, like a Captain or Arrancar. However, as each warrior falls, the sight of their fallen brothers spurs them on, increasing their power as they become fewer in number. But that is not all their death brings. As each warrior of Shiroyama falls, his blood flows into the innermost depths of the keep, towards their last comrade in arms. She sit's at the farthest end of the keep, unable to move, forced to watch her chosen enemy butcher her chosen family once again, while their blood flows into her. And when the final hero falls, when the last drop of blood has been spilt, the Warlord of Shiroyama takes the field.

Kimi herself has changed during her Bankai as well, now wearing the armor and standards (The really heavy samurai armor and the vertical flags, I don't know the proper name of either.) instead of her uniform, leaving her head and her fury uncovered. (Yes for our mask) Ryūketsu no kōtei has undergone the greatest change of all, turning from a single European claymore into both a katana of standard size, and a wakizashi in her off hand to form a Daisho. The blade of both weapons are filled with the blood of all of the Samurai of Shiroyama, the warriors Kimi's enemy must slay to reach this point. All of their strength flow through her, all of the hatred that marked the end of her days among the living has become her sword, and wo to all who would face such unending Fury.

Well it'd be rude to no try and listen. I set my zanpakuto in front of me and unsheath it, holding it up carefully as I unpack the various cleaning and tending tools I have stashed away in that small box I carry around when I'm not heading out to battle. Too much oil? No just right, a bit thicker than usual, I'll have to tell the shop owner about it, I think he gave me a heavier grade than usual? Its thicker and kind of sticky, and this speech is making it much easier to tend to my zanpakuto. I bet kotei is very happy I'm giving them this much attention.

Brush off the excess and then begin to sharpen, quickly, but not to fast, and gently, but not to soft

"And as we have lost one of our own, a position has opened, several have with the recent exchanges" Ginrei says looking at me "And though it is not a very prestigious position, I find that there is one among us who deserve the highest seat opened today, to share with her peers who already hold it, a very skilled and loyal shinigami, who you no doubt know, Kemuri Kimi, will you take the 10th seat of the sixth division, along with four others? to lead your lessers into battle when the time calls for it, and ease the burden we all share"

I feel a few hateful eyes upon me, as Kin groans and Kenta slaps him

"She's earned it" the big guy says as Tora lazily claps

"Yes, Captain Kuchiki" I Say bowing as he smiles and turns to Tora, my heart skips a beat as he laughs "And Tora, will you take the 15th, to share with Six others?"
