I don't even turn, stepping quickly and practically rushing the boy as I push my shoulder and body into him, slamming into him with a hearty thump. He stumbles, and I finally pivot around to face him, slamming the pommel of my blade into his shoulder with an echoing thud. He stumbles from the sheer force of my smack, dropping his Asauchi to the ground. It bounces with a metallic rattling.

I hold two of my fingers in the air, as I sheath my zanpakuto, and Byakuya's arms wrap behind his back, right as I push the full length of my blade back into its sheath.

"When did you get here?!" I shout angrily as Yoruichi smiles that cat like smile

"Oh, I just got here" She says, smiling a bite wider "Finished up with a stack of paper work and was on my morning patrol, working out the rest of my schedule for today, but I found myself around here, and decided to drop in"

"Is this really necessary?" He asks, frowning slightly as he stands himself back up

What do I do?

"I plan on never getting a scar on my back" I say calmly, glancing back at him as I place my zanpakuto between my shoulders and rest my hands over top it "So yes, it was"

He hangs his head and sighs, trying to struggle or will my kido spell off of himself.

"My apologies" He says, sounding ever so slightly ticked off "I should've learned by now to not try and attack your back, sensei"

"Its fine, just reminding you since you seem to forgotten" I say with a small smile, he nods and continues to try and overcome my spell...training himself as I turn back to the captain standing in front of me

"Why are you looking at me like that kimi, don't believe me?" She asks, crossing her arms as I shrug, hearing Aya giggle as Byakuya continues straining himself silently behind my back

"Well to be honest you usually leave your paper work with your..." I say pausing to find the right words as I smirk, and Yoruchi does the same, expecting another bout of insulting and teasing "Lieutenant, so please forgive me if I'm a little skeptical"

"Well I did" She says, frowning slightly "Surprising isn't it, Kimi...Sorry I nearly got you skewered like that"

"Oh that was my fault for being surprised" I say calmly as I hear Aya yelp as Byakuya yells behind me, shouting from sheer effort as I feel the Reiryoku from my spell snap and shatter

"Oh" Tosen says calmly as I hear Aya panicking behind me, and turn to see her hiding behind him as Byakuya coldly glares at her "He broke out, very impressive Kuchiki, I applaud you"

And he does

"So I take it your not skipping work to play?" Yoruichi asks, leaning over my shoulder as I watch my three friends "Doesn't seem like something you'd do"

"Yeah, ginrei's orders told me to train his son instead of my usual work, can't go against my lord and captain" I say dully as I glance at her

"Oh, I thought you did that all the time anyways" She says with a soft smile as Byakuya cleans the dust off his clothes as Aya groans

"Is my sister tutoring you how to look intimidating as well?" She sighs as she steps from behind the silent Kaname

Question: does anyone know how old Yoruichi would be at this point in canon, either in actual age or apparent age? I seem to recall that in the flashback arc she looked like more of a young adult than she does during the rest of the series.

Just curious, since at this point I don't think she is all that old, and might even appear younger than Kimi (even if in actual years I suspect Yoru is still older,) while still being one of the most powerful captains (she got the position by beating up captains without a weapon iirc.)

Just putting that in perspective, this coy little cat person is quite an impressive individual. (in canon she is like 5 foot 2 or something I believe?)

I think at this point she looks like she's in her late teens or early twenties at this point, like in the flashback arc. But to be fair, she looks 25 at most in the shows timeline, not to mention that time doesn't mean jack shit to any Shinigami less than 1,000 years old. Last I checked, Old Man Genocide is one of the only truly ancient looking motherfuckers in the whole series, and he's 2,000 year old or something.

And I guess I just wanted to point out: here is someone who currently looks like she wouldn't be allowed to drink in a bar in America, who is actually not only more powerful than us but probably in the top 10 strongest shinigami of all time. Just a funny thought to me.

And yea, it wasn't a huge difference. Later in the series she looks more like late 20s early 30s to me as opposed to late teens early 20s.

Oh, an idea for the Quincy kids: as an incentive for them to stay alive and healthy, offer them a rematch with Kimi. As many times as they want.

If they have something to strive for or look forward to, it would help keep them focused.

They also might want a shot at redeeming themselves, and if they fight with Kimi enough, we might learn something from them or they might change their attitude slightly.

Of course, the whole thing hinges on them not being whiny quitters who feel disgraced and just want to die . . . but I didn't get that impression. They had pride, they might go for it. Even if they suspect us of ulterior motives, they still might be tempted by another shot at killing Kimi.

I have arrived, my d20 is sharp, and my boner is ready. GANBATTE.

I smile as I walk back down the stone path leading to the open and cleared aclove of the estate I have been using to train Byakuya for the last five years, retracing my steps a bit faster as I hear the sounds of fighting that sounds really serious. I'd be lying if I didn't move faster because I was worried for both my sister and student. Since while they usually get along, Aya has a habit of rubbing the young lord the wrong way, and both of them have...inherited my general rule to always fight like your life was on the line, and only to raise your blade if you at all intend to kill who your facing, even if the killing intent is faked for sparring. Both of them are....well they look younger than me, and that makes me think of them as younger, but Aya's never told me her age, and I've never bother to find out Byakuya's....Its probably nothing to worry about, but the worry still grows in my heart and makes me run as fast as my legs will carry me back to the training ground.


I sigh in relief, as I see both of them clashing blades, exchanging blows but not violently attacking eachother, though Byakuya does have a cut in his kimono and Aya has a shallow cut on her face.

"Worried about something Kimi? motherly instincts flaring up?' Tosen asks as he watches them fight, Aya running circles around Byakuya, who I know is planning something, since his style revolves around using the world around himself and his enemy to bring them down.

And not to insult Aya, but she isn't exactly the most perceptive girl

"I guess" I say calmly as I Sit next to my blind friend, who's wearing a new mask, the same as the last one I saw him wearing except there isn't an upper half to it "So which of them has been more successful this bout"

"Hard for me to tell" Kaname says calmly as he leans closer to the undrawn circle marking our little mock battle ground "Aya of course has a dominating speed advantage, but Kuchiki is a much better tactician, and I have the feeling he is leading her into strikes...when he can keep up with her"

"Aya is always hard to catch" I say, yawning as I recline, watching my two students circle eachother, paying no heed to my and Kaname's conversation "and Byakuya is crafty"

I squint as I watch Aya jump onto Byakuya's blade and grin, Byakuya pulls back and Aya stumbles forward, appearing behind him ready to hit him from behind.

But the older boy kicks his leg back, tripping her as he turns to strike her with the flat of his blade.

I frown as I sit up straighter and watch them, matching blades, their styles shining like stars as they try and overcome each other. Aya by wearing down and striking Byakuya faster than he can manage, and he by simply using her own momentum and lack of patience to make her trip up

"Don't swing so widely on a quick slash like that, it leaves you open for attack, strike as far as you can and no more, a small cut is better than getting cut midswing" I say calmly "And while instincts are king of combat, sometimes you must ignore them, especially when you're fighting someone who can run around you faster than you can swing and Aya"

"GAH!" Aya yelps as Byakuya sticks his leg out, sending her flying out of the ring

"Watch out for things you can trip on, even in single combat" I sigh as she picks herself up

"I want another rematch!" She says, smiling happily as Byakuya smiles and nods "That wasn't a long enough duel"

"Well so long as you're sure you don't need to get your head checked after that fall" He says calmly as he faces her again "I'd hate to have you drop dead in the middle of a spar"

"I'm tougher than that!" Aya yells, as she goes back to shunpoing around Byakuya

Aya smiles and says nothing as she rushes into to strike Byakuya, who pauses for a moment, probably since Aya's blade got the sun in his eyes just for a moment, but its enough for me to make a joke out of, so I do.

"What? Scared of hitting a girl" I say teasingly, grinning as Tosen sits next to me, silent and still "I mean you shouldn't because you kind of look like one, Byakuya kun"

His eyes fall and he just sighs, smirking slightly as he steps out of the way and takes a swing at aya, both of them taking a hit as my sister rockets past him. He's used to mine and Yoruichi's teasing by now, still nice to see him in good spirits about it.

Still, its a rather nice day, and its kind of hard to not be in a good mood.I smile and look up at the blue sky, frowning as my mind turns to Aizen.He said some pretty dangerous things when we caught those two kids, I hope he's gotten over what ever caused him to get so frustrated that day. Wouldn't want to lose another friend. That day...the day I saw him fight, he was like a machine in battle, like he was going about waking up rather than fighting, every blade stroke I caught sight of was true art, a masterful movement. He has skill and speed, he might even be faster than aya. I couldn't tell with how fast he was moving when he was dealing with that menos...and all those hollows as well. It just seemed like he was doing something so mundane, not even a twitch of concern or doubt in that smile of his as he did his work.

Its very impressive, I know a master of the blade when I see one, and I know he's much stronger than I am...but he also might be more skilled as well. And this is...a bit troubling, since I need to figure out how to counter him, he has speed, so I can't rely much on my eyes, and he's seen me fight...but only with my Shikai. So I'll probably be unable to use that boon if I want to fight seriously against him. I'll also need to use my scabbard more, since as far as I know, he doesn't know about that part of my fighting style....and maybe find a way to break his demeanor, just to get an edge. not sure how I'll do that, since he's seems infallible at times...but other times he most certainly doesn't.

I feel like I'm going into my first fight against an actual master again. I'm excited and nervous all at once, I don't know which tricks of mine will work against him...a true test of my skill and arts...oh I'm actually getting a little excited about this.

"Its still amazing how you can just take the young lord out for lunch whenever you want" Tosen says as I stuff another piece of juicy pork into my mouth and chew it slowly to enjoy the fat on it, licking my tongue over it as Byakuya sighs and sips his cup of tea with a frown

"the guards stopped asking after the second year" He says calmly as he sets his cup down "and she wonders why those rumors started in the first place"

"I get it, I just despise them" I sigh as I set my chopsticks down and rest my head in my hands "since they always seem to make me seem like some kind of a honorless cow it seems"

"Not the ones I've heard, there's actually some pretty nice ones I know" Aya says happily "Like you and Aizen sama making a poetry club"

"Hmm, not a bad idea actually" I say as I sip my tea, wincing from how hot it is...don't know how Byakuya can drink it with a straight face "But I still don't like rumors"

"They are an annoyances aren't they?" Byakuya says dully, taking another sip of tea before continuing "I don't understand why people can't keep their noses out of business that isn't there's"

"people like stories, Kimi is larger than life at times, and scary looking from what I've heard" tosen says sadly "it may not be fair, but she is a magnet for rumors, still it does disgust me how people can say such terrible things about someone with such a lovely voice"

"Yes" I say looking up at my captain as he stands before me, standing in front of his office calmly, with an interested look in his eyes, a smile slowly crawling over his cracked lips as he hears what I said "he's a quick leaner I think and can handle himself fairly well but"

"But" He sighs, narrowing his eyes as I feel his spiritual pressure on my back, and I stare him dead in his eyes and take a breath as I get ready to continue my report "Kemuri don't be afraid to tell me the truth, I respect your honesty, even if it can become impolite at times, what exactly is the problem with My grandson's swordsman ship, I'd enjoy a detail and truthful account, Kemuri"

"Well captain, he needs more exposure to progress faster, I've been trying my best to give him this" I say calmly, standing up as ginrei smiles proudly and nods "but I'd like permission to do more"

"Do more than bring your sister and friend to spar with him?" He asks, making my heart skip a beat as he smiles and chuckles "You managed to convince me to allow both of them in my estate with your supervision back when you first started to bring them, so I'm just curious as to what this...increased exposure would mean...would I have more people trampling through my gardens and disturbing the peace?"

"Of course not, I'd find people I think would help Byakuya better himself and ask if they would spar with him when they can" I say calmly "Since as you said when I first came to you, he needs to make his own style, and well I think he can still learn from Tosen and my sister, but he needs more experiences beside them"

"Hmm, I'll allow it if you request permission for each possible candidate, since I can imagine training someone to make their own style is difficult, especially with your own mutatable way of swordsmanship" He says calmly

"Thank you Lord Kuchiki" I say, bowing my head to him as he chuckles

"So, what does his stye represent, is it elegant?" He asks happily, smiling as I nod

"Yes, a very clever one as well, his swordman ship can counter my unusual tricks as well as Zanjutsu and more normal strikes" I say calmly "It revolves around his enviroment and using his opponent's own movements against them, from what I know, it requires a quick mind and planning, but it can be devastating especially if one doesn't know his tricks"

"Excellent, I feared he might pick up your habits" He says with a smile "But never doubted he'd form his own style....I'll have to see it for myself someday and see just how effective it is myself, dismissed you may have the rest of the day to yourself, unless I find another task for you"

He smiles and nods

"If you wish to fight him, then I'll arrange for it" He says calmly "But I'd advise not to, for your own safety, dueling with someone that far above you is simply dangerous"

Its a field of thigh high grass, with some distant clusters of trees, there's nothing for miles and I had to walk here. It took me a few hours to get out here in the middle of nowhere, outside of the walls of the Seireitei and the "Civilized" Part of the soul society

And Aizen is standing in the middle of the field, his hair and Kimono blowing in the wind as he stares off into the distance, a bottle of unopened sake sitting on a rock besides him

"Ah, Kimi, glad you decided to indulge me" He says glancing back at me, the light catching his glasses as he smiled that same smile he always wears

"Sorry if I kept you waiting, I had a bit of a hard time finding this place" I say smiling as I stand ten feet away from him, ready to draw my Zanpakuto in a second's notice "Also you know you could've just asked me if you wanted to duel me"

"I know, but it felt rude just coming up and asking you directly, uncultured really" He says with a frown "And to be honest I've never done something like this before, so I wanted to be polite when I did it"

"It doesn't really matter if you're polite" I say calmly as he smirks and nods

"Yes but we're both polite people kimi, we have our manners" He says warmly, putting his own hand to his blade "And I did not want to offend you"

Bushido's meaning has definitely flowed and changed over time, trying to pin down exactly what it meant is a bit difficult, but here is a simplified version of the main 8 principles in English as an fyi:


1. Rectitude. Correct judgment or procedure for the resolution of righteousness. “To die when it is right to die, to strike when it is right to strike.”

2. Courage. A virtue only in the cause of righteousness. Death for an unworthy cause was termed a dog”s death. “It is true courage to live when it is right to live, and to die only when it is right to die.”

3. Benevolence. Love, affection for others, sympathy and nobility of feeling are regarded as the highest attributes of the soul. “Benevolence brings under its sway whatever hinder its power just as water subdues fire.”

4. Politeness. A poor virtue if it is actuated only by a fear of offending good taste. Rather it should stem from a sympathetic regard for the feeling of others. “In its highest form politeness approaches love.”

Before I can blink he's upon me and I have to swing down just to catch his blade and match it. He press his weight and strength against mine, as we struggle, our blades dancing over each other making a fast paced and chaotic song. His glasses shine and I have to walk towards him, pushing like I'm trying to move a crate filled with stones as he holds his blade calmly and coolly.

He's going to pull back, I lean back as he move his blade and strikes me again, I block it right before its tip can touch me. Holding it up, in the air I stair him dead in the eyes as he smiles, like he just offered me a drink. I smirk back as I run my blade down his with a sharp grinding noise.

We lock again and he smiles a little wider as we struggle with eachother, not saying a word as our eyes meet again. He's too fast, I've barely been able to block these two attacks of his, I'll need to trust my instincts hear, and follow the flow of battle....I feel like I'm in a war again, charging towards the enemy lines.

This...this is a real fight.

He breaks away and swings. I wince as I catch his blade, just as it presses against my cheek. I twist it to hold it and stop him from pulling back as I feel it dip into my face.

Our Zanpakuto rattle, and I can feel Kotei's rage and hunger as she meets with whatever his is called.

I need at act, he's got me at a disadvantage here. I swing my sheath up, smacking his wrist and causing his blade to cut my face...not deep enough to scar.

Moving without thinking, I step under his arms as he tries and retaliatles, stabbing downwards and cutting the back of my kimono open slightly as I crouch down and stab upwards all in one quick motion.

He gasps, and stumbles backwards, clutching his head as my cheek stings and blood drips down it.

His hand comes back red, as lines of blood flow from the cut I put in his temple.

He stares at me in disbelief and then back at his hand in shock, my heart is pounding and I'm sure my face is showing it.

"Huh, its been awhile since I've been made to bleed" He says calmly watching the blood drip down his fingers "Especially this early...I might be far above you in power kimi, but...your skill with your zanpakuto is impressive"

"Thank you" I say bowing, and before I can fully get back up, he's on me again and I can barely catch his blade

"Come on keep up" He says casually as he nearly forces me into the ground, gripping his zanpakuto in both hands

I grit my teeth, panting as I grab the hilt with both hands, feeling myself get pushed closer to the ground as Aizen continues to smile that same constant smile, his glass still covered with the light of the setting sun.

Its light catches my blood stained zanpakuto and I start to try and stand and force him up and away from me. His smile widens and and he twists his blade slightly, putting more of a pressure down against me as my hands and blade shake. I take a breath and let it out, pushing against him as my muscles in my legs and arms scream and burn, stinging as I force them to use every ounce of power I have in them. They tighten as a drop of sweat flows down my brow, my heart thumping like a line of war drums in my chest.

His calmness is what's putting me off the most, I know I'm fighting someone far above me, and I can't shake the feeling like I'm a rat trying to face down a cat trained as a mouser.

Somehow I stand back up and he closes his eyes. My instincts scream and I barely manage to pull away before he slips his zanpakuto down mine's guardless hilt. He nicks one my fingers and I feel cold steel on my stomach.

My heart skips a beat, as I step back, flash stepping away. I grab my gut and sigh in relief, my heart beating like mad....its just a scratch, not even a proper cut.

I look up at him as he casually walks back up to me, making me reenter my stance, holding both sheath and sword at my sides as he marches over to me

He's fast, really...really fast. that speed is deadly, I barely noticed him changing the path of his blade breaking our lock. And he's strong, he's....a perfect challenge for my skills.

"Come on, get serious now" He says almost teasingly, letting me catch my breath as he chuckles "Kimi, I want this to last its a wonderful night for blades to clash no"

He's in front of me again...wait, he's...he's doing this on purpose, he could easily attack me from behind or wherever

Hmm, he might not be AS bullshit as he gets later (Definitely not compared to when he got the Hogyoku) but his whole past is based on the fact that he was born with an obscenely large spiritual power (not to mention talent) and spent his whole life feeling isolated as a result.

He isn't bleeding as much as I am...its because of how much more power he has than me inside his body, his Reiatsu is oppressive and stuffy without him even fully releasing it. He's just made out of hardier stuff. I might not be as hardy as he is, or as fast, but I have lived my life to master my blade, I have skill and pure stubbornness to not back down, even if my body is in tatters. I have the bushido's code in my heart, he might be stronger than me. But I am just as skilled and I have no fear of death in my mind. Cowardice in the thing of dead men, even if they're still breathing when they flee. Confidence, courage. I need to take risks to keep up, otherwise he'll crush me like an insect...but why does he look so happy? I know he usually is smiling but he just looks...so overjoyed right now.

He rushes me, not shunpoing, but it doesn't make much of a different since he's so quick on his feet, my eyes can barely keep up with his movement as I wait for him.

its a matter of timing, like splitting an arrow or piercing a man's heart as he charges you expecting to overpower you with brute strength. Timing, I have to be precise. He's faster than a bullet I'd have to guess, but he isn't unfair, he'll give me a chance. I just have to exploit it and strike. Like a snake in grass.

He doesn't know about Oni's smoke. I can surprise him, and get a nice hit in. I take a deep breath as he gets closer to me, and as he swings down at me, I burn my body up with my reiryoku, turning into smoke and floating embers fully as his blade passes through me

His eyes go wide and he smiles slowly as I shoot past him, reforming my hands and blade as I fly past his arms, cutting his side s I reform and kneel on one leg as I run past him and slide a bit.

I stand back up as he chuckles, blood flowing down his side.

"You...really don't keep secrets do you" He says, looking amaze as the back of my pony tail reforms itself "I think I've heard about that, your ability to turn into smoke"

"Kind of ironic considering my name right?" I ask as I hold Ryūketsu no kōtei out, and grab its grip with both hands

"Poetic I'd say" He says with a smirk "But I never thought you could move that fluidly, with such speed and control"

"Surprised" I ask as he pushes his glasses up with his free hand

"Yes" He says nodding "I think I'll have to work a little harder here"

"Good" I say grinning darkly "Battle is like sake, the harder it is, the more enjoyable it is"

"Well, I'm glad you can't get drunk on fighting" He says, as he rushes me appearing in front of me

I swing, putting no real force behind my strike to feint. He manages to snag my legs as he swings to match it, but doesn't drive his zanpakuto to deeply into my leg before I pivot my out of its path and actually swing at him.

I cut through his kimono, feeling the pain in my leg as I manage to put a cut into his chest, feeling the resistance of his skin as I turn my blade around and force it deeper, managing to actually leave a gash in his chest

He kicks me away, and I get lifted off my feet, and barely manage to land the right way up. My head is reeling when he strikes again

The DC of the roll is at the sole discretion of HM.

And this is the same logic as a changeup. You don't throw a slow ball because it's better, you do it because its not what they expect.

And considering Aizen is still feeling out our abilities, because all he has to do is figure out how much power to use to match us, I suspect that the DCs for repeated maneuvers using the same stat are going to be less likely to succeed than slipping in a spirit based maneuver "under the radar" so to speak.
