In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

+About+
Chapter Quest is set in Warhammer 40k universe where players control a nameless Chapter Master, leader of the Ghosts of Retribution Chapter - an autonomous brotherhood of genetically engineered warriors tasked with protection of mankind.

This quest is a mixture of traditional role playing and grand strategy. Main narrative is driven by the players rather than QM and doesn't have a pre-set "main storyline".

try to use our psyker skillz to determine whether there are more killerbots running ramage and if possible the location of the heinous witch
>>
Now that we've dealt with the robutts in the immediate vicinity we need to ensure the entire boat is secure. No more robots or assailants.

Were the two nobles already dead of any significance?

Can we try and sense the commands the rogue psyaker was giving the robots? To see if they were meant as assassins or just a distraction for something else?

Meanwhile we should encircle the rogue psyker's position with as many forces as we can land. Try and close the net, stop them from escaping. If encountered marines should focus on containing and repelling whilst CM gets there. Preference is to capture, but kill if you have to.
Bring Geron down with Xenya, blankness will be able to help us.
>>
Did we get any hails from the local PDF / Arbites / other Planetary govt. /etc? We will need to explain the situation - if we haven't already, as people get twitchy if Space Marines start combat drops on their planets.

okay, so we already have Dermont making trips to the Tombstone, to tutor the Bellisarian Twins, correct?
I want Avernon Birg to teach them economy to the best of his knowledge.
Alderon Belladon to teach them more pish-posh nobility stuff. Coordinate with Keirus if necessary.
I also want Xyptos to teach them the basis of espionage, intelligence, and counter-intelligence.

And as we owe answer to Dermont's question; when can CM meet him personally?

Significant enough to make planetary headlines, but no Sector-wide scandal which would have transpired if not for your timely intervention. You even suspect that this might have been not a plan to murder Hagen, but rather to stain his image.
>sense the commands
You can sense that they were filled with senseless rage and energy, there was nothing of greater complexity than the fury of an Argolian drake. However before activating this, they were lead to this room on purpose...
>>1054303
You warned local authorities, they are worried, but compliant.
>>1054307
>>1054385
Didn't you hand over Bellisarian Twins for him to tutor? He wouldn't be able to make constant trips to Tombstone as it is quite a remote place.

Session got interrupted by a heated discussion in the chat, most likely I will update the thread throughout the week and possibly run an extra game on Thursday or Saturday night to compensate(will confirm on Wednesday in this thread if it will still be alive).
>>
>>1054650
It was never my intention to let the twins out of Tombstone as it is risky. Sorry if that was unclear. We recognize that it is remote and understand that Dermont won't make it often which is fine. Belladon and the tutors will take the bulk of educational duties.
>>
>>1054650
>However before activating this, they were lead to this room on purpose...

ID everyone in the room, see if they have any significance.
Examine their clothes? Maybe they're in possession of something important?

Now that the event is over i say we turn the whole thing over to the inquisition. We don't really want to get bogged down in more intrigue (at least i don't) and in any case rogue psykers trying to assassinate a lord admiral falls squarely in the purview of the inquisition. Best if we are seen respecting or responsibilities and theirs
>>
>>1054780
True. We should keep the rogue psykers location surrounded and help with the apprehension if we can though.

Meanwhile we should get the name of whichever inquisitor is investigating (if any are).

Yes, I think this is our new questing method. I am surprised we didn't do it sooner, I mean

>Our QM is a terribly slow typer (no offense Skargan)
>Unlike /qst/ leaves threads on for a long time. Even if it goes into autosage, it takes a while to disappear
>Chapter Master Quest have an incredibly lot of data (just check out the wiki), especially on the QM side
>Choices are rarely given, mostly the players have to make a plan (or something resembling to one)
>Players have to agree on the plan (or at least not disagree on shitstorm level)
>>

I think the general idea is to keep to weekly sessions running on mondays. New thread will be made each session. However since /qst/ is so slow, if a session is delayed for any reason we can continue on the same thread within a few days.

Situation: Witch had a slight advantage due to previous preparation & psychic powers
+++
Your men do their best to track down the witch, but she's gone, as if vanished into thin air. Though with psykers, you never know... By the time psykers from the KSP (Kinteran Secret Police) get there, no trace of her can be detected in the warp. Renard breaks some knees and kills a few drug dealers in the nearby slums, however it doesn't seem that they had any involvement. After consulting with KSP Renard presents you with your options:
>Milord, KSP officials seem to be quite awed and a bit insecure because of our presence. How do you think we should resolve this situation?
a) Pursue the witch personally [will most likely take a lot of time and you have other places where you need to be]
b) Leave a trusted brother and a squad of marines to help with KSP's investigation [might slightly upset KSP]
c) Leave a trusted brother to monitor the situation, without interfering into the investigation directly [KSP will look favourably upon this].
d) Our job here is done, Hagen is safe and Inquisition has been alerted, we are leaving

>>1054813

Vote for this. But make sure that our forces hang around until the =][= arrives to the scene.

I think we should have a talk with Hagen. I assume =][= and KSP will be interviewing the people on board and trying to find any links they might have.

Is it possible to sort of....broadcast the witch's psychic signature? Kind of like a psychic 'wanted' poster to all nearby psykers on the planet? So they can alert us if they sense her?
>>
>>1081132
Ditto. We'll work with the Inq when they show up, and monitor the KSP

You think about it, but you are not sure whether this is a good idea - contact you had with the witch was indirect and because of that your impression of her psychic image would be wildly inaccurate. There's a small chance sharing this partial image would lead to catching her, but it would also mean that all psykers with a similar psychic imprint will get harassed, arrested and possibly even executed.
a) Do it, it's worth the risk
b) No, the chances of it going wrong are too great

You receive a message from Brethorius:
>Milord, I just spoke with Nerial and it seems we have received a soulword for you, it is heavily encoded, but bears clear signature of the Raven Guard Chapter. Will you return to the ship to read it?
>>
>>1081163
>b) No, the chances of it going wrong are too great
This. Last thing we want is another incident.

>Will you return to the ship to read it?
We will in a bit....but first we should have a chat with Hagen about this.
We should tell him about the deal we got from the HLoT regarding white emissary, tell him the Ursuses are conspiring with the triarchy, and suggest he start discretely removing any Ursuses in the navy from positions of direct command over warships.

Give them 'promotions' from active command to desk work, etc. But slowly, one by one, don't make it too obvious.

I am afraid I'll have to deal with the fallout from this situation, but admiralty should give me a break within next couple of weeks. Would you mind staying around for a bit? "I agree Lord Admiral."

Meanwhile I've got a plan for a recon operation.

Forces: Three Land Speeder Storms, ten Scouts.
Commander: Scout Sergeant

Objective: Recon the current situation on Kruun. Attain as much information as possible while staying under the radar.

Plan: There must be shuttles and transports around Kruun, carrying things to the surface. Drop a cargo shuttle off at the edge of the system and have them drift towards the planet on silent running. Once near, the shuttle should mingle with the other traffic as it moves to the surface. Then land somewhere concealable and deploy the land speeder storms and scouts. Use speed and low profile to scout the planet as thoroughly as possible over the course of the operation. After 1-2 weeks they leave the same way, and are picked up on the edge of the system.

Viable plan? Any advice from our officers?
>>
>>1081196
Not bad but what are they looking for exactly? Mapping the planet is big work, and I am not sure if ti is necessary
>>
>>1081214
They're not mapping so much as gauging the Triarchy presence, and extend of their defences. They only need to recce around some of the cities, observe from a distance.

Thunderhawk, like a fiery storm, descends from the skies to take you back to Aspera Dominus. Within an hour you find yourself on the main bridge, servitors scurrying around you to take off your armour and Nerial approaching you with a decoder that requires your genetic sample to activate.

Procedure is complete within a minute. Message is brief, just galactic coordinates, a date in a few months and four words:
>Face to face, brother.
This must be Corvus Severax, the Chapter Master of the Raven Guard.

After you share this with Brethorius, he shakes his head.
>This is too soon. We must leave today, tomorrow at the latest to make it in time to meet him there. What about your meeting with Hagen? We need his support against Ursus.

+++

Recon plan: this mission would require a named marine to command and a name.
>>
>>1081226
>I will meet him today. Get me a Thunderhawk to him immidiately, and then we'll leave at the first hour of tomorrow.
>>
>>1081226

>>
>>1081226
>Recon plan: this mission would require a named marine to command and a name.

We don't have a named scout seargent and there should not be any shuttle or other traffic nearby.

> Essentially an ice covered rock in the middle of nowhere, Kruun was a perfect place to create a penal colony for the overflow of Imperial outlaws.
http://chapterquest.wikia.com/wiki/Kruun

so i take there is lot of ocean or something where we could slip in undetected.

Goals:
-Try to get a rough estimate of the triachy size strength and disposition
-Try to find out if they are doing anything strange, there was talk about nuclear warheads in triachy possession so be alert maybe remote controlled drones/detectors?
-Identify any triachy made technology
-find if there are any signs of ownership by the triachy, flags, symbols something as proof. Make pretty pictures.

For some reason you are unable to get Hagen on the vox. Your serfs try contacting his office, his unit, his pleasure yacht, but he seems to be missing. Does not matter
his mind is too busy with what happened anyway, so we should leave an official request to meet us later and leave someone competent there to search for clues, what about our arbites investigator?

We should leave marines in orbit, it sounded like he'd really like our presence there, even if just implicitly. Leave Brethorius and some veterans on Kinteros to make contact with Hagen when he wants. Marines should keep to themselves though, don't intrude on planet's business and annoy the KSP.

No news yet. Odd, he was due to send a soulword about two months ago.
>Coordinates
The coordinates have been changed, however the seals and encryption codes are those of the Raven Guard. Rendezvous location is just outside of the boundaries of Subsector Cryptus, quite close to the original location, but beyond a known warp turbulence zone. Valerius Jaenar, your Lord Navigator, shows you the charts while explaining it to you. You never came to like him as much as his cousin Synius, your previous Navigator, however he knows his job. And you can't really honestly like Navigators the same way you like other people. They are just weird, even for Astartes standards.
>If it is so critical for you to win some time, I could try to cross that turbulence zone in one dash, though please heed my warning - this is not safe. Both I and analyst servitors project around 37% chance of a major warp event on the way. I am not sure whether I'll manage to handle this. But this would buy you time, maybe even up to a month.

You have not gotten much XP these past few threads because of poor GMing on my part, so let's compensate that by creating a Named Character for you. Also, +1 xp for the last session.
+++
When you think of this mission, you have a few promising scouts that come to your mind as possible material for promotion.
a) Leudron - He's extremely strong, agile and fast. Known for once climbing the outer wall of the Tombstone front gate using his bare hands. However Chaplain Tempestos mentioned, that he lack confidence in himself.
b) Shaidor - hunter of Vardan stock, good sniper and knows how to hide well, but a bit slower than an ordinary marine.
c) Zenn - smartest of the bunch. Knows how to handle explosives, sabotage enemy installations and drive vehicles. His only downside is that he's young and doesn't have any combat experience.

Which one would you like to promote and have join your Chapter? You can keep others as characters as well, but you would have to pay 1xp for every character after first.

I have reports from the engine room, Gellar field is stabilising, we will not have any more incursions. However if we drop out of the warp, it means that the warp spawn will soon disappear or at least will become significantly weaker. On the other hand if you think that we can deal with this incursion on the go, we would soon arrive to our target destination.

Do you want to drop out to real space? Y/N?

Roll: Minor failure [8 points]
Result: Victory with minor casualties
Your marines enter the canteen with extreme caution. Warp spawn, while mindless, is extremely dangerous and violent, especially while the ship is still in the warp. You find them feasting on the bodies of a few unlucky armsmen who fell while trying to do their duty. Brother Ation, a hero from the battle of San Larion, commands Kappa squad as it surrounds warpspawn and opens fire. Bolt rounds and promethium torch and burn 2 of the beasts at once, however others manage to dodge and then charge at the marines. Ation, his sword ready, killed one himself, however other two got through and attacked marines behind him. Brother Elnor, newly initiated marine, tried to hit warp spawn with his boltgun in close quarters, however the beast took both of his arms off with one fell swoop of its razor sharp claws and then buried its horn in poor Elnor's neck, right between the armour plates. Seconds later Ation destroyed the beast. Meanwhile the last spawn was cornered and burned to death when Sarkos, one of the Deathwishers, threw an incendiary grenade right in it's path, however even in its last moments, it managed to jump onto Sarkos and wound him.

Casualties: Elnor killed, Sarkos wounded, armour retrieved.

Roll: Major failure [55 points, critfail]
Result: Pyrrhic victory, major losses
Thetha squad entered the deck believing that they need to secure civilians that are more of a threat to themselves than they are to them. They noticed that the mad people are huddled in embryo poses, crying to themselves or silently wailing. They approached them as civilians seemed to show no resistance and suddenly one by one, your marines started reporting that they are feeling strange. Then all of a sudden Thetha squad stopped responding to all queries. Marines which you sent in subsequently were a lot more careful and didn't approach the affected people immediately. They found Thetha squad sitting or standing dormant, not responsive to any signals. Later, when situation became a bit more stable, Chapter Master and other psykers inspected the situation and found out that the breach in the warp released some sort of a mind-killer warp malady that spread like a plague, but perished soon after Gellar field was restored.

The tricky question is what do you want to do with the marines who were affected? Their bodies are fine, but their minds and free will was destroyed.
a) They have done their duty, let them rest. Administer Emperor's Peace.
b) They have done their duty, but we will try to cure them. Send them back to Tombstone.
c) Their duty is not yet done. Send them back to Tombstone and convert them into special marine-based combat servitors.
d) Their duty is not yet done. Try to train them to follow orders and commands even in their mindless state, possibly by administering some chemicals or using psychic impulses.

You arrive to the agreed coordinates in time. Soon, out of the darkness of the void, a silver plated frigate appears. A sleek, stealthy, light and yet dangerous looking ship is clearly a vessel built for a Chapter Master who needs to travel quickly, silently and far. You exchange hails and within half an hour the armoured hatch opens and your guest enters Aspera Dominus.

You’ve once met Corvin Severax in the past. It was many Terran years ago, back when the Ghosts of Retribution were Founded. He struck you as someone wise, calculating and yet aloof and possibly even cruel. He’s taller than you (and you are extremely tall even by Astartes standards), pale as chalk, his hair is long and dark, while his eyes gleam with all the compassion of a boltgun. While you had mere few hours of his company and none of that time you spent just with him in person, your impression of the man was that he was someone not to be messed with. You are not sure how you feel about him yet. However he is the leader of your progenitors and whether you like him or not on personal level doesn’t matter. You’ve never heard of a Chapter that benefited from antagonizing their progenitors, so even though on paper you are equals, you suspect that showing restraint and being polite might pay off.

How will you greet Corvin Severax, Chapter Master of the Raven Guard? [Roll d100 for Diplomacy when stating]

We greet him like sons that were created in their image, but have never needed their father's cloak to shield them. We are professional and serious, with due respect. >>1081698
Yes, extract and bring it back to the tombstone, follow standard protocols when recovering possibly compromised geneseed, put it through the whole battery of biological and psychic/purity tests, if it checks out implant it in a few marines and monitor them for any deviations. Any marines implanted with potentially compromised geneseed - even if it checks out - are subject to regular purity and mental health checks, lessening in frequency if no abnormalities are found.

yes but submit it to extremely high levels of scrutiny as soon as possible. we need geneseed but we're not desperate for it. Mostly just for the morale effect so people feel their brothers live on.

He smiles at you, his canines white as diamonds and possibly just as sharp.
>Ave, brother. It is great to once more meet you in person. Come on, come on, this is not necessary. We are equals now, are we not? Apologies about a sudden change of location. My sources indicate that you have an active adversary who is planning to strike out against you. Yes, I’ll share what I can with you later. I couldn’t risk getting caught in the crossfire. How are you doing? It’s been decades since I’ve seen you. How are the Ghosts?
He looks at the arms in the hands of one of your marines standing nearby and laughs heartily.
>I see you are still using our bolters. Good, good. Don’t worry, little brother, your Chapter will one day make a name for itself. It is a bit of a shame that you got stuck in the bit of the galaxy where nothing is really happening. Are you busy around here? I guess minor ork incursions are your daily bread and butter? Occassional Dark Eldar raid?
You notice that your men are looking uneasy. It’s probably the first time they’ve seen someone act towards you in such a way. You don’t think that he means it, but he’s patronizing you and your Chapter. What shall you do or say?

>It is a bit of a shame that you got stuck in the bit of the galaxy where nothing is really happening. Are you busy around here?
Perhaps it is less eventful here than other sectors but we serve the Emperor where we are instructed. We had a major invasion of heretical thinking machines from the Dark Age of Technology although the Inquisition doesn't want word of that getting out. Orks of course--who doesn't have problems with orks? Some Traitor Astartes showed their faces a while back. So far it's not been anything we can't handle. All those enemies were eliminated.
>>
>>1081751
"Perhaps we will make a name for ourselves with this mysterious adversary that will strike against us!" Punctuate with a short blast of mirth.

"Now, you did not demand my presence on a moment's notice to personally meet with you -- our progenitor's Chapter Master on an undisclosed location for a leisurely chat. We like to believe we inherited the professionalism of our progenitors. What brings you to Sector Deus, Chapter Master Severax?" Be operative and professional.
>>
>>1081751
Look at him, and present the situation clamly:
>"Well indeed, orks are always a nuisance, however currently my chapter is under a request of investigation from the Imperial Fists. We have uncovered that the local Sector Lord have been selling off pieces from the Emperor's domain to a local renegade Empire.”

>“We are currently drifting closer and closer to a Sector-wide war either with the pretender ruling class, or the said Interstellar Empire. When I have received your call, I was about to discuss matters with my allies in the navy, to bring things closer to a more peaceful coup that would keep the sector from burning up in the ensuing warl

>"But instead I elected to answer your urgent call on short notice. Now please, tell me what is it that brought you to me earlier than you’ve foretold us in your message?”

>Ooooh, that sounds serious. So that's what that quarantine of Mormark was about? I am impressed. Never tackled thinking machines myself, you'll have to share the stories sometime. However I guess you just spilled the beans about the next question I was going to ask you. Leutenant Venn, our representative on Terra, brought a very interesting piece of technology to the nest. A very interesting and very heretical piece of technology. Heretical in eyes of the Mechanicus at least, because I've never come across anything remotely similar to that, maybe apart from Eldar stealth tech, but that's different from what you shared with us. So is that something you stole from the Abominable Intelligence? Why have you not turned it over to the Mechanicus? Why you gave it to us? You do realise, how important something like this can be?
Strangely, his tone of voice, despite his words, doesn't seem to be accusing you. He seems to be genuinely interested whether you understand what you stumbled upon.
>>1081793
>Hah, I love a good challenge. I'll keep the information on that enemy to myself, but if you manage to track him down and defeat him before he strikes, we'll know that you are worthy heirs of the Raven Guard and I'll put in a good word for you in Terra [+1 Favour and higher reputation with the Raven Guard if successful].
>>1081838
>Fists..? What exactly is their involvement here? Why are they investigating something that's happening in your domain? By the way, speaking of your domain... How did you end up as vassals of a mortal governor? That wasn't very smart, was it? Though I can understand it, we all learn from our mistakes. I appreciate you taking our meeting seriously, I will make it worth your while. You, the Ghosts, are our progeny and Raven Guard doesn't abandon it's own. Look, it seems like you are in a lot of trouble. Do you need our help?
>>
>>1081886
>So is that something you stole from the Abominable Intelligence?
Of course not brother! I assure you that the STC was recovered from ancient human remnants and that both the Inquisition and Mechanicus oversaw the cleansing of our world from the corpses (if such a thing applies to machines) of the heretical invaders.

>Why you gave it to us? You do realise, how important something like this can be?
Ah....well that is where I was hoping you could help me. Of course it is both useful but potentially dangerous technology. As the Raven Guard we turned over the plans to you because we knew you could make good use of it in the service of the Emperor...but...how do we prevent this from falling in to the wrong hands eventually? Should we just destroy it as too dangerous?

(Please note that I am intentionally leaving out and not mentioning certain things because I think that is best)
>>
>>1081886
"We worked together with the Mechanicus of Nestorium on the STC. It is an original STC blueprint, and in no way related to Eldar or xeno technology. If anything, it is the holy as it is an entirely new STC piece, in an entirely new branch of technology. What we choose to do with the spoils of war is up to our own insight. That insight led us to share such an invaluable and holy treasure with our progenitors, precisely because of its importance. That was all it was, Chapter Master."

We don't speak too openly about what, where and how we got it. It is pure and holy and a gift, that's what's important.
>>
>>1081886
>So is that something you stole from the Abominable Intelligence? Why have you not turned it over to the Mechanicus? Why you gave it to us? You do realise, how important something like this can be?
"Oh no, we recovered the technology during the cleansing of Varda, it's old archeotech from the dark age, an STC. We gave it to you because you are are progenitor, and renowned for your stealth skills. We felt it only fitting that you have it."

"I'll be honest brother, I'm not one for gambling the lives of my marines on challenges. I'll take a stab in the dark and guess a name though, Dresos Kand?"

>Fists..? What exactly is their involvement here? Why are they investigating something that's happening in your domain? By the way, speaking of your domain... "The fists? We helped them in looking through hulks to try and recover an old vessel of theirs. As for bending the knee....yes. The governor would have let our planet starve otherwise. It was a difficult time. As for your help, well, we have reason to believe a major operation may be going through. A crusade. On the Styrian Triarchy. The assistance of our progenitors would be greatly appreciated."

"If only brother, its construction is laborious and slow, for the proper rites and cares must be taken. Nestorium is a relatively young forge world, I can understand why they would not want to give away designs that could bring them prestige once fully proven."

>Well, it's not just up to me, but I can guarantee that we will not leave you on your own in a time of need. Tell me how many men, when and where and Raven Guard will be there to support you!
