"Freelancer 2-1 to AWACs, requesting situation breifing." You asked as the remains of both Freelancer and Shirotori flights took up their positions near to you, having now broke down into combat pairs. You and Weiss lead the group, with Wiess sat just a few meters behind you and to your right.

A few hundred meters in the same direction sat Shirotori flight. Princess Sakamoto and your sister running their jammers to keep them protected from incoming missiles. At the same distance on your left side sat the remains of Freelancer's 3rd and 4th pairs. Kay lead the pair with Durendal reluctantly flying on her wing. They had argued over it for almost a minute, eventually you had to step in and delegate Kay as the leader. Durendal had complained at this, but she eventually complied.

"Situation is as follows 2-1: F-15s from the 32'nd Fighter Squadron along with F-4IJ's from the 703rd Naval Air Group are almost about to enter WVR range, but due to enemy jammers we can't contact them. We're waiting for an EC-130 to take-off to boost our signal so that we can contact any jammed units. About 12 miles behind you is a mixed flight of assorted Vipers, Hornets, Eagles and Phantoms. You can fall in with them or continue on, that's up to you." The AWACs air-controller briefed you quickly as you looked down at the glowing blob on your radar screen. Zeus had been forced to shut down your radar thanks to a few of the parts overheating. Right now you were data-linking to Weiss's radar set so you could actually see something.

"Understood, any info on the Soviet force?" You asked as part of the blob suddenly dissipated, revealing a number of dots. Each dot labelled and listed by their radar return signatures. Mixed in amongst the group were some of the IJN aircraft, their dots marked with small target numbers.

Curiously, there were a pair of apparently unknown signatures in amongst the mess. Weiss's radar apparently unable to compare them to the known signatures in it's database.

"Negative, the jammers are preventing our radars from punching through. The Aegis sets on the IJN and USN ships could, but they don't have line-of-sight to the bomber force, so we can't use them." The AWACs controller huffed, his tone of voice telling you that he hated not knowing what was going on.

"Understood AWACs, Freelancer 2-1 out." You confirmed before killing the connection as you contemplated your next move.

"So, are we engaging?" Weiss asked enthusiastically, chomping at the bit for a little revenge for the first missile barrage.

"Negative, friendlies are in the kill-box. We can't engage with BVR missiles without risking them. We'll get into visual range before launching." You replied calmly as you checked your jet's status. The damaged CFT had apparently been drained already, though your weren't sure if that was simply because of the leak, or if Zeus had pumped the fuel into the other tanks.

"Good idea. And we can save the missiles for if the enemy attempts to bring in reinforcements. should we form up for the approach?" Kay asked as you flicked over to the Agiles. The nippy little bastards could probably kill the unknown aircraft if they turned out to be some kind of super-fighter. It's not like they hadn't already managed to prove themselves.

"Negative, keep the current spacing so that we can go evasive. We'll head in at mach one, the quicker those bombers die the better." You replied as you gently increased the throttle, your F-14 creaking slightly as you broke the sound barrier. Your now clean centre-line enabling you to breach the sound barrier with little trouble, even if the fuel tank breach had you slightly worried.

"WILCO." Kay and Weiss acknowledged at the same time, Weiss's German accent mixing with Kay's southern drawl. A second later, Durendal, Sakamoto and Janice acknowledged. Your entire flight following your orders to the letter, in spite of the political power that one of them could wield.

Then again, it's not like you really gave much of a shit about politics unless it directly effected you.

As your flight began to approach the soviet formation, communications with the AWACs began to grow worse and worse. Until eventually the link died, leaving you alone to make the decisions for your unit. It wasn't something that you particularly liked. You didn't have much time to dwell on it as the enemy flight began to come into view. Or rather, the tracers and the flames around in amongst the formation.

Crimson tracers stitched into the night sky, chasing the afterburner trails of the jets that danced around the formation. in the moonlight you could just about see the massive formation of enemy bombers, the moon glinting off the glazed nose canopies of the assorted Bears and Bulls. You couldn't tell the exact aircraft you were facing. But you knew that there were at least a few enemy fighters, the dogfight around the formation was more than enough of a hint as missiles streaked across the sky. Some of them smacking bombers out of the sky, some turning fighters into fire-balls, and some just lancing off into the night sky.

>Engage the bombers first, you should be close enough not to risk your comrades getting hit.
>Move in at full speed and assist in the dogfight. The sooner those Soviet fighters die, the better.

"Hit the bombers, we need to stop those cruise missiles from launching." You ordered as you switched to AMRAAMs, while the Agiles were better at such short range, the bombers were probably not manoeuvrable enough to avoid the missiles. So they were the only targets that the AMRAAMs could hit easily.

"Understood, fox-3!" Weiss called out as she ripple-fired her missiles. Each of the missiles streaking out towards the Soviet bombers as you brought your radar online and selected your targets especially. In this fight, you couldn't afford to take a chance with letting the missile select it's own target.

"Freelancer 2-1, fox 3!" You called out as you fired off your pair of AMRAAMs, your comrades launching their sparrows at the same time and calling it out over the radio. Your missiles splitting up and tracking their targets, a bear and a bull, both of them hauling cruise missiles under their wings.

The bull was the first one to go, it's cockpit being blown open as the AMRAAM slammed into it's nose. The force of the blast causing the aircraft to fall out of the sky, it's fuselage falling apart. The bear fared slightly worse, the missile hitting the cruise missile underneath the right wing. The cruise missile had been tucked between the engines, and the blast from the AMRAAM managing to set it off. The blast managing to snap the wing like a twig. The bear began to fall immidiatly, it's crew bailing out as the aircraft began to spin.

As the sparrows began to cut into the enemy formation, the soviets responded with their own interceptors. A flight of MiG-31s popping up over the formation. You quickly slammed the throttle forwards again, closing the distance as fast as you could. The MiGs snapped their missiles off as quickly as they could, and you rolled into a low dive as you dropped chaff and flares. The missile meant for you instead tracking after the countermeasures.

>Dive under the bomber formation and strike them from below. They won't risk shooting through their own bombers.
>Charge them and hit them with your guns, you have the speed to race past them and the manoeuvrability to take them in a turning fight.

As soon as the missile passed you, you forced your bird nose-on with the Foxhounds. Your tomcat's internal damage sensors crying out as you temporally pushed too much force against your jet's tried and tested frame. But these sensors shut off as soon as the manuver was complete.

In the moonlight, the gaggle of MiGs was easy to see. It was a small group of 4 jets, flying in twinned pairs. A pair of them dived past the bombers below them as they attempted to intercept your comrades below, leaving you and Weiss to engage the pair in front of you. The pair might have tried to engage you, but Weiss wasn't in the mood for a dogfight as she fired a pair of sidewinders at the Foxhounds. They both split, one going right and one pulling left. The one moving left dumped chaff and flares as he tried to break the missile lock, his comrade to the right did the same a second too late. The missile slamming into the body of his jet and blowing it into a pair of burning chunks.

The remaining jet was too close for an agile shot, so you flicked to guns and pulled your nose forward again. The M61 Vulcan cannon roaring as the recoil sent shivers and shakes through the jet's metal skin. The short stream of yellow tracers lancing out and shredding the MiG's wing, the wing careened off into the darkness as the jet began to spin out. The jet fell into one of the bombers below and smashed through the aircraft's spine. The pair of broken birds falling out of the sky in fragments of steel and plastics.

"Freelancer flight is fangs out!" You announced over the open radio, an announcement to your comrades in the furball. Telling them that assistance had arrived.

"Understood freelancer, be advised of enemy fighters in the area, looks like a mix of flankers and foxhounds!" An IJN pilot piped up almost immediately as you rived on a TU-4 on the way to assist your squadmates below. Your burst gutting the bull and snapping it's control lines and causing the aircraft to sedately fall out of the bomber formation.

"Understood, we'll keep an eye out. Freelancer out." You thanked your Japanese ally as you caught sight of one of the MiGs, on reflex you snap-rolled and dragged the stick into your gut. Your tomcat responded perfectly as you entered a controlled dive towards the MiG. Once again, you sent a burst of 20mm shells towards the enemy. He didn't have time to react as the shells slammed into his jet, cutting along the jet's port side intake, and down the body of the jet as is continued on it's course to oblivion. The SAP-HE shells blowing craters into the steel beast and igniting it's fuel, the jet burned a brilliant orange as you passed it. The tomcat shuddered as the Foxhound exploded just behind you.

You quickly levelled off to find just what he had been chasing, Durendal and Kay both began to cut mercilessly at the bombers front of you. Missiles streaked from them as they sawed mercilessly into the enemy bombers. As you made to support them, your radio crackled into life.

"Any aircraft, this is Plasma 6-2. We need assistance pronto, we're getting swarmed over here!" One of the eagle pilots cried out, alerting yo to the plight of your allies. If they were destroyed, then it would only be a matter of time before the reds wiped out your unit. But at the same time, you still needed to destroy the soviet bombers before they released their deadly payload.

>Order your unit to continue engaging the bombers, hopefully the Eagle pilots can survive until support gets here.
>Order your unit to assist the Eagle pilots, if you can save them before the bombers start launching then you might have more people to help you destroy the bombers.

"Freelancer flight confirms, moving to assist." You replied to the eagle pilot, before then switching to the squadron frequency. "Disregard the bombers for now, hit the enemy fighters."

"Bradley, are you mad? If they start launching-" Janice began, only for you to interrupt her.

"Don't fucking start. We have reinforcements inbound, in around a minute. If the reds have to launch then they will be firing from long range. We have time to assist the chair-force guys." You snarled as you adjusted course towards the furball just behind the soviet formation, F-15s and F-4s twisting and turning against a group of flankers. Occasionally an aircraft would burst into flames as it fell to those that it faced off against.

"But-" Janice tried again, only for you to cut her off.

"Janice, just trust me." You asked as you checked your current weapons status. You still had your pair of Agiles, and around 500 rounds for your cannon. Your sister remained silent for a couple of seconds, before then sighing.

"Fine, I trust you." She finally relented as the rest of your flight began to form up on you, entering a loose formation as you continued towards the furball. You quickly switched over to your Agiles and began to search for targets, in such a tight engagement you couldn't risk a stray burst killing a friendly.

You quickly selected your first victim, a flanker that was chasing down an F-15. The eagle pilot kept trying to roll and dodge as he climbed on full afterburners. The bright orange shock cones from his engines presenting an inviting IR target, had his pursuer been willing to fire off a missile. The hungry Soviet pilot seemed intent on scoring a guns kill, spraying tracers at the air force pilot as he ran from his death. With both of them on full afterburner, you couldn't risk an Agile shot, the missile could easily track onto your comrade if it missed the flanker. You had to go for guns.

The flanker pilot was so engrossed in his hunt that he didn't see you coming, you came in from his side, effectively T-boning him as you sent a burst of 20mm rounds his direction. The SAP-HE shells tearing the soviet jet to pieces when they impacted him.

You found your next target as you passed the burning and broken remains of the first flanker. Your next targets were a pair of flankers that were chasing down a pair of IJN F-4s. The F-4s leading their pursuers into a thatch weave on full power, but without afterburners. The IJN pilots trying not to present an appealing heat signature to the Soviet pilots.

"Weiss, hit the closest flanker in that pair, I'll hit the furthest one." You instructed your wingmate as you dived onto the unsuspecting flankers. You and Weiss both engaged in very different ways, Weiss snapping off a sidewinder at her target as you screamed in on your victim. The first flanker to die was the one that Weiss was engaging, the sidewinder slammed into the tail of the flanker and detonated, the explosion turning the jet into one big fuel-air bomb as the aviation fuel in the jet's tanks cooked off violently.

Your target however was a smart one, he saw you coming and instantly pulled a cobra to dump his airspeed. His sudden stop ruining your shot as the shells lanced out in front of him, as you passed him he dropped his nose and rolled into a dive after you.

"HE'S ON US! No, he's bugging out!" Zeus called out from his seat behind you, you glanced up to the rear-viewing mirror in time to see him break off, chasing after the pair of F-4s. But his sudden speed dump had left him vulnerable. You smiled warmly as the F-15 that you had saved hit the flanker with a sparrow. Exacting revenge on those that had tried to kill him.

"Raptor flight to all units. Reinforcements have arrived, we'll handle the bombers." A voice over your radio announced as you pulled up into a climb, heading after a flanker that was spraying cannon fire at another F-4. You quickly switched over to your Agiles and fired, but you were too slow. The flanker managed to plant a burst of cannon fire into the helpless F-4 before your Agile slammed into it like a Ahab's harpoon into Moby Dick. The twin fireballs of the exploding jets erupting like a pair of artificial suns in the blackness of the night.

"Shirotori 1-1 to all units, requesting support." Sakamoto asked over the unit frequency, her voice firm in spite of the stress of combat.

"Ah, calling for help are we?" A sultry Russian voice asked over the general frequency, the soviet pilot tutted disappointedley. "I expected better of you Princess Sakamoto... I'll have to teach you a lesson about that when I take you in my chambers."

"How uncouth! get away from me you creep!" Sakamoto replied over the general frequency, her disgusted tone telling you that she did not want to be taken by that soviet.

"Are all of the Soviets on this front so weird?" You asked over the general frequency as you banked towards the Princess's IFF tag, noting that Janice had been separated from her by a good kilometre.

"He is special pilot. Not in good way." Another heavily accented Soviet pilot spoke up. His broken English only barely good enough to get a good sentence out.

"My condolences, can't he get pussy?" You replied in fluent Russian as you ordered Weiss to assist your sister, the order being relaid via the signalling light atop your canopy. The simple message being asst 1-2, and while it was short, you knew that Weiss understood as she pealed off from her position as your guard and raced off.

"No, he is former Stasi. They are always like that." The Soviet replied curtly, practically spitting the creepy pilot's former occupation as if it was a curse.

"If you are both done with your little banter, I have prey to hunt." The creepy pilot announced as you gained on him. Sakamoto was doing an admirable job at keeping off her, probably thanks to her RIO telegraphing the Soviet's position to her. You noted that the Soviet pilot didn't seem to be actively trying to shoot her, worse, he was simply playing with her. Like a cat that would play with a bird by breaking one of it's wings and leaving it to flap about on the ground before killing it. Or ripping a mouse open and leaving it to die of blood loss and exposure before pluckily eating parts of the corpse.

Yeah, cat's are fucking psychos. Or at least the cat that one of your old friends had.

Indeed, the Stasi pilot would send send a burst of cannon fire over the top of Sakamoto's aircraft. Or would fire a missile without guidance to force her to jink to avoid a missile that she mistook for one that was actively hunting her. You glared at the Soviet aircraft, the crimson and black twin-seat jet continuing after Sakamoto in spite of your charge.

"I think not." You replied calmly as you flicked over to your last remaining Agile, your patients with this bastard wearing out. But before you could fire, your missile warning systems screamed into life. You jinked instinctively, pulling your aircraft into a wide barrel roll as you dumped chaff. You craned you neck back and cursed as you saw another red flanker on your tail.

"You were saying?" Another Soivet asked over the radio, his smugness at having forced you defensive radiating like an aura that made you sick to your stomach.

>Smoke this wingmate with your last Agile, kill the creepy guy with your gun.

"Can I get some support over here with this fuck boy?" You asked over the squadron network as you jinked away from a burst of cannon rounds. You glanced over you shoulder, just in time to see the red flanker break off from you, a pair of F-4s diving on it.

"We'll take him. You just protect the princess!" An IJN pilot announced as the F-4s dropped down behind you. You quickly turned your attention towards the flanker. The creepy pilot paying no heed to to his comrade being bounced. You quickly flipped over to your Agile and locked him up. The missile lancing off your missile rail and screaming out at mach 3.

As the missile approached, the soviet dumped chaff and flares. He quickly rounded on you as the missile detonated in mid air, having tracked into a flare.

"Ah, someone's a feisty one!" The pilot announced happily, your missile warning sirens screamed as he fired a missile at you. You quickly dropped a barrage of countermeasures and jinked quickly. The missile passing behind you as the flanker bared down on you. You quickly hit your afterburners and executed a brutal turn, the thrust-vectoring nozzles allowing you to quickly dodge the burst of cannon fire from the Stasi pilot. You fired your own burst at him, only for him to roll over your burst before passing you. You quickly rolled over and tried to chase him into his dive. Your radar-guided gun tracker spinning around the heads up display.

You quickly managed to get on the Stasi pilot's tail, relying on the Tomcat's weight to help you gain speed. But even though you were only separated by a few hundred meters, the Stasi pilot continued to roll and jink out of the way of the cannon rounds.

"Ha! To think that comrade Makarov was shot down by you..." The Stasi pilot joked, before cutting his engines and attempting to make you crash into him. You quickly dived out of the way, before pulling up into a loop. Your missile warning system screaming for a couple of seconds before silencing, the missile having lost it's track.

"How is comrade Makarov by the way?" You asked nonchalantly as you reached the apex of your loop, you looked down in time to see the Stasi pilot bank off to the right. You quickly dived down onto the soviet, only for him to jink out of the way of the cannon burst.

"He's back in the union, answering for why he lost his little pet." The Stasi pilot replied as he rounded on you, your missile warning siren screamed again, only for it to die out as the flanker was perforated by a long burst of 20mm shells. The jet seemed to sit in the air for a second, before the aircraft suddenly detonated. A green and white F-14 with cherry-blossom patterns screamed over it.

"That deals with that..." Princess Sakamoto huffed as you rounded back towards the fight, your gun now only holding less than 300 rounds.
