/qst/ - Quests

After another hiatus, we will be returning to Moon World Janus once more fellow creators. The goal of this game/quest series is to see how far the evolution of these critters can go, and to make a thriving ecosystem of creatures and aberrations.

As GM, I'll do my best to actively work on phylogeny charts to track the evolutions, and also make random events for the world to drive evolution down new paths. Since I've done this a few times now, and taken the time to observe/lurk on other EvoGames, I've picked up a few new tricks to keep everything organized and streamline too. Also don't worry, we'll be returning to Rieina post-extinction event, next thread.

How to play:
• Open an image of a species in MS Paint, or your editor of choice
• Make one evolutionary change to that species
• Save as .PNG!
• Post your new species in the thread with a description of what evolution you've added and why.
• Details indicating what the generation of your species is important. Please indicate. (Base Organisms are Generation 0)
• Details regarding a creatures size or name are encouraged, but not required.
• Nothing too outlandish. Anything silly or derailing will not be considered a canon species 95% of the time.

Notes:
• Unless stated explicitly, no species ever goes extinct. Old species can still evolve, even if they're not on the latest "chain"
• Try to make your evolutions gradual and realistic in biological standards.
• Everyday I'll add an update Phylogeny Chart to track changes. These take awhile, so please be patient.
• Expect a Random World Event in order to drive new and wonderful evolutions.
• There will be no Mass Extinction Event for this era, but this will be the final era the Base Organisms are available for evolution
• When this thread reaches its endpoint, we will be switching back over to Moon World Janus.
• Have fun

New to the Game?:
• Don't be shy. If you have an idea for an organism and want to spend the time making it, please by all means do so.
• We also have a Discord to keep you up to date on EvoGame stuff, and chat with other folks. https://discord.gg/kk8eJgJ
• I will be making an Imgur Gallery for this EvoGame in the near future (ETA 1-2 weeks) Till then use the Dossier PDF provided for any details you need on organisms we're using.
• There is a Blank Template that you can use to make any organisms you wish to make for this game below.
• Just a note, while it doesn't matter how intertwined your organism is with the rest of ecosystem, the more dependent it is on the existence of other creatures, the more potential your organism has to survive.

The Description of the present Moon World Janus, Setting, and more will be posted in supplementary posts.

Alright so posted in the OP Post is the playable organisms that you can use for evolutionary purposes in this thread. Got a nice little dossier of info for each of them.

Present Setting: We return to Janus at the start of the new Magedivatian Era, just a few million years after the mass extinction that destroyed 90% of all life. A burst of radiation destroyed nearly all life living close to the surface and shallow waters of Janus. Mat Algea miraculously survived this event, and with no competition or predators, began to spread across the barren lands, tilling soil for future terrestrial life. The seas have also gained a metallic sheen, due to the death of so many organisms that contained pure metals in their bodies that broke down into particulates in the water. With so many niches in the world ecosystems left open, and new opportunites awaiting on the land, life may once more explodes across Janus.

--Organism Advancement--
> Plant Organisms may be as large as the size 11 increment as stated below.
> Animal Organisms may be as large as the size 10 increment as stated below.
> Plants and Animals may now evolve on land, though animals will need a method of breathing.
> Silicates, Calcium, and rich quantities of Iron, Copper, Zinc, and other metals are present in the environment and may be incorporated into an organisms diet/evolutions if desired.

--Size Increments--

the blood algea develops decoy strands of DNA much larger then its own rather simple DNA mimicking the creature its part off. it does this by sampling the DNA of the creature its insides DNA and mimicking the gene structure to create decoy strands of it using a a pair of long strands of protein that it creates in its body.

this makes it virtually indistinguishable from the rest of the body to the creatures immune system, allowing it to remain virtually undetected

The hind supports of the Caldroo grow longer and stronger allowing them to better support their weight on them. At the same time their front flippers detach from the body-wide fin and grow stronger. A branch of Caldroo adapts to feed off of the Mat Algae. They get flat, broad horns to scrape the flat, tough plants off of the rocks, and grow hooks similar to the barnicald to help grip the craggy ground and keep from getting swept around by the waves. They still need to return to the water to breath, but can last pretty long when being splashed by waves. They also get bigger to store food and deal with the greater temperature variation on land.

Also, I know I have to redraw something at least once a thread, and I'm sorry about that. I just really hate having to work with the blurry/low-res pics :(

the terra-mungori develops a coat incredibly good at retaining water, allowing it to filter water through its gills allowing it to "breath" on land as long as its coat stays moist. awhile this certainly doesn't solve its lack of lungs to breath air, it allows it to remain on land for much longer periods of time.

The blood algae, once adapted to live in the digestive system of filter feeder, is having trouble finding hosts. Currently, the only suitable hots are the Weird-Mouther Twizzler, and possibly the Kinacopter. It changes to live in the respiratory system of other organisms, especially favoring the Barnaconch and Terra-Mungori, which have fairly large and exposed gills.
With this new lifestyle comes increased immune scrutiny, so they extend their sealthiness to mimicking the antigens on the surface of the host's cells.

the omnichomper undergoes a rather dramatic change.

It's tongue widens and tenses up, with the 'teeth' prolonging. The prongs of its tongue it can close around, for example the glwoing fruits of the Lantea (which, even after the chomper grows almost tripple in size, are almost as large as it is) and rip them off, draging them into their mouth.

Similarely, they can rip Barnacalds off the rocks they cling to and try and digest them whole. There is still no way to breach the shell though.

Since the change is so extreme, their name is changed to Omnimunchers.

Living inside them in a dormant state until their host dies, when this happens they start devouring it's corpse completly. However what separates the Scavenger Algea from any other parasitic creature living in Janus is the fact that they have an innate ability to turn organic matter into basic nutrients that are also present in the soil.

A brach of fractal tungus adapts to hunt Caldirt. It becomes grey, to blend in with rocks on the beaches; with it's mouths closed, it is mostly undetectable. It breathes through the frill around it's foot, and gets all of it's water from the prey it catches. The most important change, however, is that it's stinging cells are replaced by extremely simple eyespots; together, it is able to use these like compound eyes. When it closes it's mouths, it sticks the very tips of its tongues out to see prey.

Finally, the Barnaconch has only managed to spread between the archipelago of "continent" B. However, they are very successful in their niche, and this chain of islands has much higher populations of Scavenger Algae as a result.

It would be nice if people actually used this to keep track of were stuff has spread, and hopefully help drive competition and biodiversity.

The large freshwater oceans/lakes on the mainland of continent G were previously inaccessible; however, the spread of terrestrial life meant that some Namelgae buds were able to stick to Caldirt and adapt to this fresh new environment. With almost no restriction to size from competition or herbivores, they were able to remove any limits they had on sideways growth. Individuals are still not very big, but because they reproduce by creating clones inside of themselves, a single "colony" of genetically identical individuals can grow to be several meters across.

the terra-mungori develops thrilly extension to its gills. these long thrilly gill extentoins have a single hole in the end that pulls in air using a its internal muscles to make a vacuum effect. these begin to form basic lung like organs, allowing it to live full time on land! terrifying!!

at the end of its tingue, its previously bait like appendage grows in size due to its use on land as a sort of spatula/shovel used to life caldirt on there back and dig up barnacalds, this makes it able to hunt much more efficiently, and even allows it to start preying on >>1101435 on on the rare occasions they meet

The Floating Chomper replaces it's gas bag, since having powerful water jets meant the extra energy and drag wasn't worth a little buoyancy. In its place, they get a muscular organ that is used to help the "mouth" suck in water faster and expel it more powerfully. It also moves its gills to the inside of this organ, in order to avoid contracting Blood Algae.

Hooray for Phylogeny Charts.

Can't help but notice a lot of organisms haven't been evolved yet. Hopefully this chart would show everyone where our organisms stand.

Also at some point I will try to post a phylogeny that displays the full path of phylogeny.

> All bodies of Freshwater are assuming connected via rivers/streams to either other freshwater lakes, or to the ocean.
> You guys can in theory make estuarine organisms or evolve organisms that have migrated into Freshwater.
> It can be assumed for terrestrial life, that unless specifically stated, your organisms reach on land is going to be dependent on where local plant life. Since Mat Algea is the only terrestrial plant life, it might be a little hard to develop complex terrestrial ecosystems at the moment.

Some varieties of mat algae find that there is only so far one can spread out horizontally until one runs out of space. As it happens the distance one can spread out vertically is far greater, so some Mat algae begin to grow upwards as well as outwards, with upwards being the slightly more important distance, growing into small rock-like lumps (hence their new name - Lump Algae). A by-product of their increased upward growth is that their horizontal growth lessens, meaning they end up with fewer roots to feed themselves. as such, their roots grow longer, piercing deeper into the rocky soil.

While their width is still theoretically infinite their height is limited to between 5 and ten centimetres due to the fact they lack the proper internal structure to support anything larger.

A branch of Caldao follows the Namelgae upstream into Blofka's lakes. There, they find a virtual paradise, untouched by any other animal life and with no predators or competition. They stay pretty much the same shape-wise, but grow much, much larger. Also, they get jaws more suited to shearing off large chunks of seaweed.

Due to a random mutation on the gene that decided the direction in which the Lump Algae grew new cells, a new strain which is able to grow taller has sprung up. The Helix Algae tend to form spirals that rest on top of eachother and are held onto the ground by sturdier roots. These new heights allow the plant's spores to reach longer distances, causing it to spread faster than it's predecessor
>>
>>1106402
Other varieties begin to develop a solid core of cells that gives the plant the internal support to grow higher. However, their horizontal growth has slowed to a crawl, so they are generally tall but not particularly wide.

--World Event: With Distance Comes Diversity--

Life in the Early Magedivatian Era went through a period of recovery and reclamation of once barren ranges of habitat. The face of Janus has also been changing throughout this time, as continental drift scatters the landmasses of the world. The landmasses spread out further, opening new corridors in the ocean that eventually develops into the first global thermohaline circulation. This results in warmer waters, much warmer temperatures away from the arctic ranges, and more nutrients spread throughout the marine habitats of the world. In this time geography also begins to be a defining factor for not life and the construction of new ecosystems, especially the budding inland ecosystems.

--Event Details--
Plain and simple. I've outlined in the map above geographic locations in need of some given names. Name them as you see fit, but please nothing too idiotic.

--Organism Advancement--
> Marine Organisms may now begin using the global ocean currents as a means of establishing a global presence.
> Terrestrial Organisms will now susceptible to regionalization. Please specify where a region specific organism is from for future reference.

A branch of Calatfish moves away from pack hunting, and grows much larger to let it hunt by itself. They have several small changes to support this: the whiskers move forward to sense prey more easily, they get a slightly different tail shape, and they specialize their venom into a neurotoxin. They hunt by ramming prey in the head, usually killing it instantly, and the poison takes care of those that survive fairly quickly.

A branch of Algetta move into the estuary(s?) of Landmass 5, adapting their biochemistry to the lower salt concentrations there. They lose the larger "eye", focusing on electroreception to sense other organisms. Since the estuary doesn't have many inhabitants at the moment, they don't really have to worry about herbivores as much; however, they do adapt the defense mechanism of partially burying themselves in the mud. To assist in this, they get more efficient leaves and grow barklike "claws".

A third branch moves into the estuary of Mirium, following the Bead-Body. The develop a "herbivorous" diet, although in practice they are able to use the exact same hunting techniques. Because the Algetta are nearly blind, the Fab Nommer begins using color as a form of sexual selection (they have eyes on their chin from the last thread, I think everyone including me forgot). They also slightly change tongue structure to better grip the Algetta.

Some Helix Algae on landmasses 5 & 6 move into the large central "deserts". To tap in to buried groundwater, they invert their normal growth and create large spiral roots topped by sparse leaves on top. With no competition, they quickly fill the land, colonizing the interior of the surface for the first time. They prefer to live as close to lakes and rivers as possible, of course, but competition is fierce; besides, they are hardy enough to survive in almost any environment. The only reason the Spiral Algae hasn't spread to other continents is that their current method of reproduction prevents them from travellling too far over the water.

Dusty Algae's bark layer takes a more sophisticated turn, the already modified helix cells mutate once more, but instead of growing a thicker cellular wall, they develop a different composition altogether. Hard bark 'scales' envelop the helixes formed by the chlorophyll rich vines as they grow tall. This scales are very porous, and allow gases and liquids to exit the inner body of the plant if necessary.

As food becomes more available and diverse on the surface of Janus, the Scavenger Algea flourishes. It develops a more intricate communication network between each cell, forming long channels that spread nutrients and enzymes along it's now ever replicating pattern of a body. New chemicals that are able to break down the cellular membranes of animal tissue, gaining the capacity of turning animal carcasses into the nutrients that cover fertile soil. Scavenger Algea isn't an infinite being however, and although it's spores are able to live in a dormant state for centuries, the being itself is limited to the size of the corpse it lives off.
